Spring is a miraculous experience. The whole world comes alive after the winter in which it seemed that everything was dead. The world comes filled with color and the scent of delicious greenery. The world that seemed so dull and cold has come alive once again. Little did we know that beneath the cold hard ground the plants and trees were preparing for rebirth. Spring gives us hope for rejuvenation in our own lives as well. Spring is a time to renew the excitement and zest for life that lives inside. It’s no different in SecondLife. With so many options available to virtually make yourself into a glamorous fashion maven or a fierce and dark vampire... the options are endless. From Mesh bodies, hands, feet and heads to designs from some of the hottest creators on the grid, we can truly transform ourselves like a proverbial butterfly. This month’s issue brings you a look into some of the options out there to make your transformation not only natural as the rebirth of the flowers and trees but also just as beautifully.

We’ll take a look into the reations of Altamura, who by their own definition is the face of natural beauty, as well as some of the top bloggers this month that bring to you fashion from around the grid. If that wasn’t enough, we will also take a look into ASCENDENT Modeling Agency and the vision they bring to SecondLife . orn with an intrinsic eye for artistic detail, a wonderful sense of symmetry and a good sense of what constitutes beauty— it is no surprise that Rumegusc Altamura, owner and creator of Altamura, the Future of Fashion creates some of the most alluring mesh heads and bodies in SL for men and women. Altamura’s line of mesh heads and bodies offered by Rumegusc includes picture perfect natural heads as well as beautiful ethnic heads for women of color. Altamura has also just released a line of bento mesh heads. Hailing from Italy, Rumegusc found SL back in 2007 after watching a show on Italian TV. Curious and creative Rumegusc explored the many options that SL offered and decided to start creating bodies and heads. “ My project began as an idea that was born in one of the groups that I follow, “amici su Craft” on open sim. The creative process began when I first created a sculpture with a mesh body. From that point on, the details were created and refined, step- by -step in SL. Part of this process was to try to make my friends in SL happy, some of them told me that they would never use a mesh body and mesh head! Change sometimes is difficult.” As an artist and content creator, Rumegusc saw the near limitless possibilities that a mesh head and body offered. “ I fell in love with the concept of mesh bodies and heads because I found that I could do what I did when I was a child: draw bodies and faces.” Rumegusc was told by her friends 12

that one thing that they didn’t like about mesh heads was the fact that at that time mesh faces only had one pose. “ I understood what they meant by this and to remedy this I used a trick of SL on the attachment points to create animated faces similar to those used by Bento nowadays.” By August, 2014, I felt I was ready to go into the business of selling these avatars.” Today this full service store offers animated mesh and bento heads for men and women in addition to full mesh bodies. “A new goal of mine is to create more rigged accessories for Bento heads.” As this shop evolves, there are always challenges and Rumegusc is a perfectionist. “One of my greatest challenges is to make sure that my line is balanced. I want to impart the same feeling in each of my creations - the eyes, face, feet, dress, and overall look has to be balanced and beautiful.” Rumegusc takes beauty and the art of content creation seriously. “For me all 3-D games not only SL have good style and beauty when content creators make those things that are necessary to support the constructed environment. In terms of VR, fashion is a special case. We are lucky that Linden Labs has provided limits on the use of polygons with complexity. This fact has pushed some “mad” creators to try to model mesh objects with millions of polygons to try to achieve a more sober form of expression requested by the public. Linden has created Bento for this reason and it give us creator’s new frontiers to explore and the ability to achieve

new ideas and content. Challenges come with advancement in technology. “At this point, I think one of the biggest challenges is Bento. It is not is not a perfect system so the bodies and heads are not perfect…yet! The real challenge is the body—creators of bento heads spend a lot of time trying to make perfect what is not perfect nowadays. In addition, there is the challenge for more male bodies and more male bento heads. Another example of a challenge is all new huds. All these things must be taken into account… and along the way, there are many surprises, of this I am quite sure!” Rumegusc has the support of many friends and of her loyal staff. “I am only the creator of avatars and the brand, the soul of the brand, Altamura, is the entire staff. People who work with me side by side, people who love what they do and do it well. I appreciate them so much and I am lucky to have them.” As for beauty, Rumegusc has a refreshing point of view. “To me beauty is relative. According to my personal point of view, the face of an avatar is nice when it’s natural. I love what I build and I love beauty, this is so important to me. “

e are pleased to introduce you to LauraGenia Viper, one of our two bloggers of the month. Laura has been a resident of Second Life now for about seven years having migrated over from another virtual world that suddenly closed. “I was totally hooked on Second Life and stayed,” she explained after the previous world she knew, There.com, reopened its doors. She started blogging 2.5 years ago and in asking her how she got interested in blogging, “It started as a way to catalog my purchases! A diary of the pretty fashions I was amassing. I also really enjoyed working with SL photography.” Also sharing that blogging for her has so far been a wonderful and also a huge learning experience. While she particularly likes blogging for and supporting original mesh/texture designers, who impress her with their talent, Laura blogs all kinds of fashion including jewelry and accessories and home and garden décor as well. It leads us into asking if she had a favorite designer she liked to blog for, her response was, “So many favorites! I love all my sponsors. When I develop a friendly relationship with them, more than “ just blogging,” it makes the experience richer. One talented designer I count as a friend is Elle Polygon of Slipper Originals. Another is ArwennEvenstarUndomiel of Whymsical Marketplace. Both wonderful, amazingly talented ladies.” As for an event that she has blogged that makes her most proud, “I’m very proud to have been blogging for Swank for a year!” Laura has quite a list of events and designers she blogs for, which include We Love To Blog, Swank, Black Swan, Chez Moi, ChicModa, Flippant, Image Essentials, Justice, La Boheme, Lumae, Marquesse Staff, Masoom, Musa, NANTRA, Rezology, Sn@tch, Slipper Originals, Tiffany Designs, Verocity Poses, TST Creations, ZOZ and Zuri Jewelry. The challenges of blogging are never easy, with balancing both real and second life, not to mention the competition with other bloggers, so we were interested in finding out a little more of what inspires and keeps the motivation going to continue and at the same time setting themselves apart from others. “Sometimes my own poetry, song lyrics, sometimes the items themselves and I 20

describe them more fully,” is what Laura describes inspires her blog posts. What sets her apart from other bloggers, if anything? “I always try to present a blog post, not just pictures. I add a related story, poem (often my own) or song lyrics, or more fully describe the items. I’m detailed with credits.” She further goes on to share some tips with fellow bloggers, “Personally, I don’t like seeing just basic style credits, and no other write-up or a piece of themselves. Sponsors are giving us items free to advertise for them. Make it interesting so people notice!” As for what advice would she give to any person who would like to take up blogging? “I would strongly advise they just start blogging, with no expectations of “grabbing the brass sponsors ring.” Study what other bloggers do. Join Facebook and Flickr groups, and above all, follow and fave other people’s work! You want to blog for certain stores? Earn it first!” We asked if she felt she had learned a lot, and evolved since the start of her blog? “Yes I do, tremendously so, and still learning, which I love.” Even with the best intentions it’s not always rosy or a piece of cake as the saying goes, so we asked if there was anything she disliked about blogging? “If I could afford to hire someone to assemble my credits, I would!” She laughed with her response and if you have ever seen the long list of credits for some blog posts you would understand the humor. Does she have any role models in the blogging world? Too many to count, she states, but gave us another valuable tip. “I learn from the more established and pass it on.” As for what the future holds for Laura, apart from continuing in her blogging and improving her photography skills, she plans to blog for Whore Couture 7 in March. Laura is also an Assistant Blog Manager for We Love to Blog, Blog Manager for Flippant and Slipper Originals and besides being a Swank girl, a description she provided, she has experience also blogging for Relay for Life Events and the Peace on Earth hunts, as well as Siren Production’s Jewelry & Accessory Fair. We wish her the best in her blogging endeavors.

ike many of us, Quixotic Criss, found out about Second Life through another person, and in her case it was a neighbor who told her about a “game” and finding that the description sounded like something she would enjoy she decided to give it a try and has been here ever since. This was almost ten years ago. Though Quix, the short version of her full name, has not been a designer for that same length of time she has been here in SecondLife. She only began to pursue the world of designing about a year and a half ago. Though her interest spans a wider period of time, “I’ve been interested in playing with prims for a long time, nearly from the beginning.” As we see, that interest eventually paid off, as she finally made her way towards designing. “You have to understand, I come from the time before mesh and as such, I broke my virtual teeth on modding prim clothing that led to an interest in how I could make them do what I wanted, which led to an eventual interest in the “newest” feature, mesh. I love playing with textures and colors and getting prims and mesh to do what I want them to do.” A response shared with candor and energy, positive qualities that are evident as we continue in our interview. As for what she creates, Quix, makes jewelry exclusively. “While I love SL clothes, I have a fascination with nanoprims and nanomeshes.” Semi-Precious, is the name of her brand that specializes mainly in a boho chic style of jewelry. Every designer experiences something entirely different, from the beginning to the end of the journey, so we asked Quix, what her experience as a designer has been like. “I’ve always known that SecondLife was a small world, but since starting to design, it’s really hit home. The welcome from other designers has been warm and the reception from my customers has been wonderful. It’s a very rewarding experience.” It is the kind of experience that most would hope for. Having described her creations as being boho chic style, we wanted to know if she created for the seasons, or what appealed to her – a glimpse into her system for creating. “I make what I like, what I want to wear. I use a collection of stones that I love, but not every piece works with every stone. I tailor the stonework to the piece, rather than the piece to the stonework and I play with different looks, depending on how the piece is playing out.” There is no question that creativity seems to come naturally to Quix. “I’ve always had a great love of art in all its forms. I’ve dabbled in many different media, but I do think I enjoy creating in SL the most. It’s the most versatile and forgiving medium I’ve tried my hand at so far.” Every artist needs a muse, or they draw inspiration from someone or somewhere. “I think we all draw inspiration from other designers. For me, I have a couple of SL designers I admire; one who helped me learn my

craft and one to who’s level I aspire. I have to credit Ever Courtios of Ever An’ Angel for getting me started and putting me on the right path and I greatly admire Abraxxa Anatine of EarthStones. I can only hope that someday I might be serious competition of hers.” But running a business can also be time consuming with success dependent on a lot of factors. Prompting the question of what she likes and dislikes about the designing business. “I love the rush I get from finishing a new piece. It’s always a challenge to get the pieces to do what I envision and seeing a final product is thrilling. As to what I dislike, the only thing I can say is, if I didn’t like the work, I don’t think I’d have lasted this long.” Then there are days when we least expect it, when you have those nail biting challenges, “There

“I ’ve always thought of accessories as the exclamation point of a woman’s outfit.”

—Michael Kors

are challenges with every piece. Sometimes the jewelry just doesn’t behave the way I want it to. But every challenge is another reminder of how much I love what I do.” It’s always helpful to get seasoned advice from someone who’s already gone through some of the hurdles of starting a business, to gleam the positive and negative sides to owning a brand in Second Life. “As much as I love the work, it is still work. It takes a lot of time, effort and dedication to launch a brand. If a person doesn’t love it, doesn’t have a passion for it, then yes, it can become a chore. I would say to anyone thinking about trying to start a business, be sure it’s something you love. Otherwise, it becomes just another job and not a vocation.” Semi-Precious participates in Marvelous Monthly and has also previously done charity events in the past, including Rock Your Rack, RFL Christmas Expo and Quix’s favorite, The SOS Festival. What can we expect in the future? “I’m currently in the process of putting my merchandise on the Marketplace. I also plan on at least one new release per month; separate from the exclusive set I put in Marvelous Monthly. Also, The SOS Festival is coming up in just over 2 weeks and I will have a store there.”

Roxaane Fyanucci S

I

n 2010, Roxaane Fyanucci heard about SL from a friend from a different virtual world platform; the descriptions of everything to see and do in SL made Roxaane curious so she decided to check it out. “My friend was a model in SL and she really helped me learn the basics of SL.” These days it is almost a pre requisite that if you are a model you are also a blogger. Having been a successful model for three years, Roxanne decided to tackle the world of SL blogging. To her surprise, she found that her modeling skills really helped formulate her blogs. “ It’s always a challenge for me to blog the variety of styles found in SL. As a matter of fact, if I don’t like a product, I don’t think like a blogger would, rather, I try to think like a model and style the outfit accordingly. I believe a blogger should have the option of whether or not to blog an outfit or product, I mean, if you don’t like it you should not have to blog it. A model, on the other hand is not free to do this; when a model receives an outfit for a show you have to style it regardless of your personal feelings. A model has a job to do of representing the product and I look at items I am not that fond of in the same way for my blog.” Every blogger has favorite items and products to blog. “I have a predilection for blogging poses 36

and hair for portraits. I also love blogging about furniture and décor. “Sometimes I use a photo studio but I prefer doing pictures on location in SL. I look at my styling and I imagine a place to shoot and then research to find the perfect place, and, if I can’t find exactly what I envision, I will build a set to create the image that I have imagined. I consider myself first as a model and then as a blogger. I don’t consider myself a photographer even though I shoot images for my blog and some are even on display in an art gallery in SL.” One of Roxaane’s favorite designers is an icon in the SL fashion world, Fellini Couture. “ I love this brand because it is French and I’m French. When I first came to SL it was the owner of Fellini Couture, Joy Fellini that gave me the inspiration to become a model. When I saw her gorgeous creations, I thought to myself, “Wow, one day, I want to be a model and work for this brand”. And one day, Joy IM’ed me and asked me if I want to blog for her, it was one of my more beautiful days in SL”. Roxaane knows how to give back to the SL community as she blogs for many events. “Some are regular events and others are fashion or charity events. One of my most important sponsors is We Love To Blog. I love all the events that I blog for, but I think the event

I’m the most proud to blog for is Rock your Rack that raises funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation in collaboration with Models Giving Back.” What sets Roxanne’s blog apart is her love of fashion and her skill at styling and photography. “ I am not sure what sets my blog apart, sometimes I ask myself that very the same question. My blog has a lot of followers and even though I don’t consider myself a photographer, I love taking pictures but, I don’t consider myself a professional. Perhaps it’s because I have my own blogging style I do it with love and passion.” One of the greatest rewards for Roxanne is that her blog has led her to discover many new and beautiful places in SL; and, the challenge of course, is to make sure that her blog tells a story with images. As for advice, “I think that bloggers and models alike should always do what they love, do it with their heart and always take pleasure in the creative process. “ As for the future, Roxaane is working on the Fantasy Angels and the Miss Royalty pageants. “I think my participation in pageants will end when these two are completed. I plan to continue blogging and modeling and I hope to show my work in more SL art galleries in the coming year because I have found that I love creating landscape photos.”

Ascendent Agency/Academy – A Family Affair S

K

atie Michelle Fagan (katiemichelle) wandered into SL at the request of some of her RL friends that regaled tales of the wonders of VR found inworld in SL. “After awhile, I admit I was curious and decided to check out SL for myself and five years later I am still here and still intrigued by all the possibilities.” Like many of us Katie spent a great deal of time early on exploring sims and discovering the word of fashion. “There was so much to see and do, so many talented content creators and so many beautiful items to buy! After a few years of exploration, I decided to take a modeling class… and that was beginning of it all because I discovered just how much I loved to model.” 54

As Katie’s styling skills evolved to artistic perfection she decided to open a modeling school to help others experience the joy of styling and the catwalk. “My first agency was called Superior Modeling Academy that operated for several years. Eventually, we were approached to build a new academy with another individual but that didn’t pan out… and my partner, Gavin came up with a new name for our agency/academy, Ascendant and it stuck.” To ascend means to rise in power and influence, to be up and coming, to flourish and that of course is the core goal for every agency/academy on the grid. “We brainstormed different ideas, and Gavin came across ASCENDENT. ASCENDENT is the point of the ecliptic that marks the start

of an important event. When we became ASCENDENT, we wanted to do things differently within the modeling world, so we felt with the birth of ASCENDENT we would change the way we bring the virtual world of fashion to life.” There are many things that make Ascendent special. “First, we treat everyone like they are our family. Our philosophy is to be the best Agency and Academy in SL by treating everyone we meet as part of our family and doing things that are different than everyone else. We treat people with respect and dignity, and we stay away from a lot of the drama that most agencies have. The main program we offer is our academy; and unlike most our academy, offers a comprehensive program

MODE. Magazine

that teaches our aspiring models everything they need to know to become successful. Most academies will break everything up into different classes and charge for each class; our course is comprehensive. We also offer our seasoned models a place to come to learn new techniques and to share their experiences in the workshops that we will be doing every month. Like many agencies the challenges are pretty much what every Agency/Academy faces. “Basically, this includes: getting students, getting models for shows, and coming up with new ideas for shows. The rewards are fabulous – I love seeing a student who may have no experience, blossom as they go through our classes and stand on the graduation stage. The feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction I receive at the end of a show make it all worth while.” Learning from experience and reacting in a pro- active and positive way is truly a gift; and is how Models Against Bullying was established. “ We established Models Against Bullying as a result of a RL situation. We felt that there was too much bullying in the SL modeling world. The group has been in existence for about a year, but due to time constraints, we haven’t really had much opportunity to do a whole lot with it. We would like to do so much more with that group, but it all comes down to time constraints.” Needless to say, what keeps Katie coming back to SL is her friends and family. “Sometimes without them I’d want to pull my hair out. And sometimes, you come in contact with someone who touches your life when you may be feeling low and they lift your spirits back up and it reminds you of why you do what you do.” At the end of the day, Katie views the world of fashion as an expression of who you are. “One of the most important lessons we teach our students is that they don’t have to change for anyone. We want you to be you, not just another cookie cutter, so, think outside the box and don’t try and fit yourself into the same square hole everyone else is trying to fit into.”

“When we became ASCENDENT, we wanted to do things differently within the modeling world…we would change the way we bring the virtual world of fashion to life.” 55

hen SecondLife residents visit the store {Posh Pixels}, a brand known as sexy, edgy, urban and elegant that specializes in women’s clothing and accessories, you also have an introduction to VampirePam. The owner of Moolto.com, a Second Life Social Network (like Facebook) designed for Second Life Avatars. Besides a web presence, Moolto.com also has an in-world presence that produces hunts, pageants and contests plus also provides shops for rent and lots more. Pam, as she’s known to many, despite her name that has a story of its own, has been a resident of SecondLife since 2011. Like many, she also thought of leaving until she gave it more time exploring the vast opportunities it could offer that she decided to stay. “I love the fact that SL gives us the opportunity to explore whatever desires we have in such an environment as a Virtual World, allowing for us to be and do what we may never have the confidence to do in the real world.” Her primary companies are Moolto.com and {POSH PIXELS}, though also shares partnership in other business endeavors with her partner, all enterprises housed on a single sim. All these ventures bring her the best of both worlds. “I am able to express my creativity and still provide value added services for the community.” Starting early in the morning and many nights well into the evening, she spends her time designing 58

for her store, talking with fellow designers, attending shows or running the dayto-day management of all the companies under her leadership. While primarily focused on how she can improve and grow her businesses, she has many friends she has met over the years. Those fortunate enough to know her also know her loyalty and dedication and the 100% she gives to anything she begins. Pam also has a long list of experiences she brings to the table, being a certified SL model and instructor. To give our readers a little more insight into both companies she manages, we gathered information to share with you. Pam, whose attended many modeling academies and served as a modeling instructor during her time here, has always had a fascination for clothing. “Having the opportunity to sample some of the finest designers in SL was both an honor and an inspiration. However, there was always that one elusive item that I could not find or a very specific vision of a styling only to not be able to find what I needed to make it a reality.” This is part of the reason that drove her into the world of designing, a journey that has been fascinating as well as humbling as she sees her designs walk some of the more famous runways in SecondLife by many models she once looked up to. {Posh Pixels} also sponsors Modeling Academy Graduation Shows. However, her store doesn’t only cater to the models, many of the customers that

come to the store are from many walks of life and tastes in fashion. This keeps her focus on providing quality clothing and accessories that appeal to many, at affordable prices. It’s a challenge that isn’t quite easy, though she works hard in finding designs that inspire, and are unique and will stand out at an event. She credits real life designer, Alexander McQueen, whose designs are eclectic and avant in nature, as being only a part of her inspiration to create designs that are set apart from the crowd. “The Internet, magazines, my own personal style...everywhere there is inspiration to be found.” Owning a store is enough to keep anyone busy, but that alone didn’t stop Pam from pursuing a new challenge. That of taking ownership of Moolto.com after the original owner, Maxes Loon, announced that he was closing the doors. “I thought it would be a pity to lose a well known, long running popular platform like Moolto.com.” Seeing it as an opportunity to keep a brand that provided great value to residents of SecondLife, as well as to content creators, artists, models and bloggers alike, she worked to reach an agreement to take over Moolto.com. In doing so, part of her mission was to keep some of the traditional things alive, like the hunt that many residents take part in. Pam has also launched a new endeavor, MODE. Magazine, bringing back popular columns like the Blogger and Model of the Month features. Plans are in the making for

organizing the Faces of Moolto. com 2017, adding a few twists that hopefully will be fun and rewarding for its members. Inspired by past accomplishments to continue the work of providing services that offer value to the SL community, Pam, has set the bar high for Moolto. com. “I see bringing in events and opportunities that engage the community, such
