eves gains MI Young Rally Driver of the Year nomination...
welcome Welcome to Issue 122 of Pacenotes Rally Magazine, your number one rally read... This month we have all our usual championship reports from around GB and Ireland. By the time you read this the ‘Circuit’ or Co Down Rally as some people are calling it, will be over, I have read lots of comment about the event, some good, some poor, lets hope it was a great rally and we have lots to report on it next month... The next ITC event will be the famous Killarney International rally, we have a preview inside... I always love going to ‘the Lakes’, it brings back fabulous memories from my competing days and I will never forget spectating from the ‘Pacenotes Helicopter’ piloted by Mr Ollie O’Donovan... We will have a full in-depth report next month.
Kevin Eves has been nominated for this year’s Motorsport Ireland Billy Coleman Young Rally Driver Award for his performances in January and February. The 22 year-old from Pettigo, Co Donegal, won his class and finished fourth overall in the National section of the Galway International Rally at the wheel of his Toyota Corolla, making the most of the slippery conditions to beat many potentially faster cars. Kevin’s plans for this year include driving a new Peugeot
208 R2 in the Circuit of Ireland, as well as in the Scottish, Ulster and Isle of Man rounds of the British Rally Championship. He intends continuing with his Corolla in the Border series. The winner of the Motorsport Ireland Billy Coleman Young Rally Driver of the Year Award receives €50,000 worth of support to contest stage rallies nationally & internationally in 2015 along with the support of Billy Coleman co-ordinator, Tom Walsh.
A big ‘well done’ to young Craig Breen on his special Maiden ERC victory in Greece, I’m sure it will be one of many victories this year in his hard-core looking Peugeot T16. Wherever you are this month, stay safe on the stages! Simon Mooney editor@pacenotes.net

Former Circuit Stages revisited The Ravens Rock Rally will return to Waterford City and county on 28/29 June, beginning with a ceremonial start in John Roberts Square at 6.30pm on the Saturday evening. Competitors will tackle a variety of challenging stages, including some that were last used 30 years ago by the Circuit of Ireland Rally. A total of 10 stages will run over a two-day period, which is a first for the event. On the Sunday evening, the leading rally cars after stage 10 will cross the finish ramp, which will be located outside Dooley’s Hotel on the Quay.
rory’s tough test At just 16 years old, Rory McCann will be one of the youngest competitors taking part in this year’s Manx National Rally (9-10th May). He has entered the Chris Kelly Memorial Rally co-driving for Jason Daly in his Honda Civic. The Douglas teenager is still at school – in fact, two days after the rally, he begins sitting his GCSE exams. No pressure, then!

Jim Clark enries Open... The entry list is now open for the Jim Clark Rally and Jim Clark Reivers Rally, which takes to the roads of Berwickshire on the weekend of 30 May. And with the rallying season now well under way, competitors are wondering what lies in store on what is the second round of the 2014 MSA British Rally Championship and fourth round of the ARR Craib Scottish Rally Championship. For the moment, the two Clerks of the Course are staying tight lipped about the route and the stages, but this event is already pretty unique in both Championships. Although the Ulster Rally (Rd 4) and Isle of Man (Rd 5) events are held on tarmac roads, the Jim Clark (Rd 2) event is the only one on the British ‘mainland’ to run on closed public roads. Event regulations and entry forms for both the Jim Clark and Reivers Rally events are now available from www. jimclarkrally.com.
Carlisle Family Fun Day Promise... There will be a real carnival atmosphere surrounding the start and finish of the Pirelli Carlisle RB Foundation Rally, which arrives in Carlisle over the weekend of 3-4 May. The competing cars will be on show before leaving the start line outside Carlisle’s Old Town Hall, where the crowds will be entertained by a variety of performers. The Langhom Pipe Band will add to the occasion with the skirl of the pipes echoing around the historic buildings throughout the day. As an additional attraction, budding drivers of tomorrow can try out their skills on a giant Scalextric layout which will be in operation at the Old Fire Station Arts Centre throughout the day. Entry to this, and all the other attractions, is completely free of charge.

Mccormack & Hankook look on the Bright side... Marty McCormack and David Moynihan kicked off their first World Rally Championship programme at the wheel of a Ford Fiesta R5 backed by Korean tyre giant Hankook and innovative insurance expert TigerRisk. It proved to be a rally of firsts for the former British Junior Champion as he turned his hand to his first gravel event in a 4WD car and his first event in a new category R5 Ford Fiesta, perfectly prepared by the Italian A Style Team. The event started well as Marty and David set a steady pace. During the opening couple of days’ competition, they managed to climb inside the top 20 overall while setting consistent top 10
times in WRC2. However, the final leg had a sting in its tail as a puncture caused them to slide off the road during the penultimate stage. The car was lightly damaged but it they were unable to get back on the road. Hankook’s Mike Patterson said afterwards: “Marty and David approached the event in a professional manner as they consistently improved their pace, gathering both experience and valuable data for Hankook tyres.” Marty and David are now raring to go and looking forward to the next leg of their WRC programme which takes them to the Mediterranean island of Sardinia for Rally d’Italia on 5 June.
Go Motorsport visits Loughries PS.
Loughries Primary School students received a visit from Northern Ireland’s GoMotorsport Regional Development Officer, Jonathan MacDonald. The school was located on stage one of the Circuit of Ireland.
Support from Irish competitors for Sol Rally Barbados, the Caribbean’s biggest annual motor sport international, continues to grow. Making their first trip to Sol RB are Kerry mechanic Brendan Brosnan and journalist Sean Moriarty. New York-based Enda McCormack will make his second trip to Sol RB in the Ford Escort MkII built for last year’s event by Philip Case Rallysport in County Donegal. As last year, he will have Donegal’s Kieran McElhinney as co-driver. Running with support from McCormack Contracting Inc and Doyle Construction, also back for a second year are Tommy Doyle, who hails from the same town as McCormack, Longford, and co-driver Liam Moynihan (Millstreet, County Cork) with their Renault Clio R3. Sol Rally Barbados runs from 30 May – 01 June, with the Scotiabank King of the Hill and Simpson Motors scrutineering taking place the previous weekend.

From time to time something quite exceptional happens in the WRC, and the rain during reconnaissance for Rally de Portugal well fitted the unforgettable category. It showed up interesting consequences... Portugal always produces
something unusual, even though the rally itself gives the initial impression of being straightforward. Post-rally technical problems are not unusual on the event, but happily not this time. Only recently there was a spate of unusual co-driver pacenote reading errors, which were clearly due to the thick dust encountered during recce, which made judging corners and distances very uncertain. This time however the problem was the torrential rain during recce. It wasn’t only the flooding. The difficulty was not only that notes made badly inevitably lead to cars going off the road, but also the disruption to the recce schedule reduced available time between recce and the rally for co-drivers to double-check everything they have done against their recce videos. It is interesting that the uproar when recce became limited

to two passes has died down, but this has only exposed new factors. One is the need to make accurate notes on the first pass, then the importance of basing your notes on the experiences of
given he had never done the rally before. Secondly Andreas Mikkelsen, who had made a conscious decision before the event to prepare completely new notes, finding that existing notes

previous events. It showed up the advantage of being able to do a recce by special agreement when you are not actually competing on that occasion. Two drivers stood out in the pacenote debate in Portugal this year. Firstly Kris Meeke had no need to explain that he was a victim of the storms
based on rallying in Super 2000 cars were not good enough. It was interesting when stages were interrupted (stage four, because of Kubica, and ten because of Tanak) that the crews who were yellow-flagged had an immensely valuable opportunity to drive the rest of the stage at
normal speed, checking their notes for the second runs through the stage if they needed it. Even more interesting was when Mikko Hirvonen was asked how valuable was that opportunity, and he said not much as his notes were already good from previous years. Then comes the story about the long stage 9/12, run this year in the opposite direction to before. As was obvious from the stage times, this was the place where Ogier pulled away from Hirvonen, without the benefit of experience of the notes from previous occasions. Sebastien also showed a correct analysis of spotting the places on the stage where he could afford to be aggressive with his driving without risking unnecessary degrees of tyre wear. So, what is the real secret of Ogier’s success? Is it simply tyre management skills or his ability to make good new notes, or what?
SAFARI-LIKE CONDITIONS IN RECCE
1000 Euros debt…
One of the most delightful stories before the rally revolved around Ogier and his deal with the organisers six years ago, just after he became famous with his WRC debut in Mexico. He went to Portugal and pleaded with the organisers to have permission to run the recce, but could the organisers help with waiving the usual 1000 Euros fee for doing this? That year the Rally de Portugal was not in the WRC,
DECISIONS IN SERvICE...
on account of the dreaded event rotation idea, so WRC rules did not apply, and the organisers made a deal. Yes, he could make the recce without charge, but he must pay the fee immediately if he became world champion. With great ceremony Ogier presented a cheque for 1000 Euros at the start of the 2014 rally, payable to the local fire fighters’ charity.
Stage victories…
Portugal is traditionally held at the point in time when the season starts off in full force and the signs are good for a splendid season this year. Four active manufacturers in the WRC, and drivers from all four teams scored special stage victories in Portugal, and most excitingly Hyundai joined VW and Ford in actually leading the event on occasions. The way Hyundai, despite the shortage of experience and development
of their cars, are able to seize an opportunity when it presents itself is striking. After the stage when Hyundai driver Dani Sordo lost his lead, when the conditions were not so tricky, he sighed as he spoke to the radio commentators saying that in normal conditions he realised the car he was driving is not yet powerful enough.
WRC2 Success…
There were no Peugeot or Citroen R5s in Portugal, but Sebastien Chardonnet has been promised an entry in the new Citroen in Sardinia, but there were already 14 Fiesta R5s – only nine months after R5 cars were first allowed to enter competition. The only problem is the way the traditional Group N based cars are being pushed further behind. It makes one nostalgic realise the top Group N car was the Lancer of gentleman driver Max Rendina, who only finished 28th. The only other recognisable production type cars ahead of him were the two top Citroen DS3 R3T cars, which finished 26th and 27th. And then we come to not one, but two junior one-make championships. Leaving aside the
curious muddle which came with the over-lap between WRC3 and JWRC this year, both the DS3 R3T-based JWRC and the Fiesta-based Drive DMack series are already fulfilling everything expected of them, the younger drivers done well, generally. Nobody told 21-year-old Karl Kruuda that four-year-old normally-aspirated Fiesta S2000s shouldn’t challenge turbo-charged WRC2 cars (Kruuda finished just behind Tidemand), who drove Kruuda’s car three years ago, or 23-year-old Pontus Tidemand was too young to challenge 43-yearold Nasser Al Attiyah or Jari Ketomaa (35 in April). Maybe I never noticed age really isn’t an issue these days. If this isn’t a most fascinating scene I don’t know what is. What I find disappointing is elements of the media cannot see what is in front of them. Spring is here again, and even if we still haven’t yet found common ground with the WRC Promoter, there is a whole life out there worth enjoying. Go for it!

012 // guest column with iain campbell, mull rally clerk of the course
Closed road legislation -
is this the ‘holy grail’ for motorsport and rallying in particular?
Guest Column
The MSA, along with the ACU (for motorbikes) have been lobbying Parliament for years now to get a change to the legislation so that individual councils could have the right to suspend the Road Traffic Act to allow motorsport to take place on public roads closed for that purpose. Parliament opened up the debate for
public consultation and that closed on April 10. Hopefully, the motorsport community have done their bit, and responded to this consultation and also notified their local councillors of the benefits that these events could bring to the region.
But is it going to be the saviour? The one piece of the jigsaw that will overnight make our sport cheaper to participate in? Will it ensure over-subscribed entry lists? Will it make negotiations with the forestry people more sided towards the rallying community for the pound-per-mile charge? Will it lift our sport away from being hidden in the woods and towards the central conurbations? October will be my third year as Clerk of the course for the Tunnock’s Mull Rally, the first mainland UK event to successfully achieve the legislation required to be able to compete on public roads, so I hope that this gives me some right to be able to speak about what closed road motorsport could mean to the UK. Will it make our sport cheaper to participate in? Rallying is always going to be an expensive sport. Competitors will always spend whatever they can to try and get that last bit of performance out of themselves and their car - that is not going to change. Entry fees are the one big expense that competitors hate. It is the one expense that doesn’t help their performance, doesn’t assist their support crews and what do you get in return? A set of time cards? Closed road legislation does mean we don’t
pacenotes MAY 2014
have to pay £688 per mile to use the stages, but it does introduce other costs in more detailed consultation with the local residents on the route, more detailed consultation with the local authorities and then there are all the negotiations with the Police. The Police are interested in safety of the residents, how they can move around during road closures, traffic management and spectator movements. Competitors are missed here - they are the responsibility of the rally organiser. All of these things come with a cost that can equate to the same as paying for the use of forests.
Some have held the great hope that all of a sudden the forestry will lose their monopoly on venues for stage rallying. Leading to them dropping their rates for the use of the land, so rallying still takes place in the woods. I struggle with this perception. Having spoken with many forestry road engineers the cost of repairing a really cut-up road after the passing of a rally can far outstrip the cost per mile we pay. However, they do recognise that on occasion; hard frost, or after long, dry period, they can ‘win’ when the roads sustain little damage. In all it will balance out over a year, but it won’t force the lower rates, but under their policy of access for all our sport should still be welcome in the gravel tracks. But to me the big benefit, the greatest asset of being able to locally suspend the Road Traffic Act, is it gives our sport another string to its bow. We can look at completely public road based events. We can look to introduce town centre specials before the cars take to the woods. We can create demonstration events purely to promote that our sport is not just, muddy, dirty, hidden half-way up a mountain, watched by folk with dodgy outdoor dress sense and we can now even look to join two forest stages up with a short tarmac section.
To have the opportunity to rally on public roads should lead to full or oversubscribed entry lists. Both the Jim Clark and Mull Rally attract large entries, but over the last few years not oversubscribed entry lists. The Pendragon and North West Stages all attract large entries so it could be safe to assume that closed road rallying will bring a proper festival and financial benefit to all the areas that hold such events.
So I don’t believe that closed road legislation will transform our sport overnight, but I do believe it will enable our sport to grow and develop alongside others, such as cycling that can pass directly through communities showing off our sport at speed instead of just transit sections as that is all that is possible at the moment. The 45th running of the Tunnock’s Mull Rally will take place over the weekend of October 10-12.

Powerful Portugal Podium! The FIA World Rally Championship headed back to Europe and to the Algarve in Portugal for the latest round in this year’s series. Based in the south of the country, it looked like a familiar story with the Volkswagen crew of Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia taking their third victory of the season - and fourth Portugal win. The French reigning world
of Kubica and Evans, performed sterling late night work to get the cars ready to rally again the following day.
champions won Rally de Portugal by 43.2 seconds to take their 19th career win and Volkswagen’s eighth consecutive victory. The Ford Fiesta RS WRC crew of Mikko Hirvonen and Jarmo Lehtinen finished second, and Mads Østberg and Jonas Andersson took the final podium position for Citroën. Ogier claimed the honours on the opening street stage, and he headed the field into the first day of gravel stages, which included two loops of three identical stages covering 146.04km. For most crews the recce had been marred by heavy rain, and although the sun had appeared, the stages were very tricky and required care over the slippery roads. Dani Sordo set the pace first thing - the Spaniard claimed the first fastest stage time for the Hyundai i20 WRC on SS2, before taking the lead after another win on the following stage. He dropped back during the day, but headed Hyundai’s challenge in fifth place. Mikko Hirvonen had been one of the pacesetters all day with the Finn challenging for the lead and finally taking it in the final stage of the day. Ott Tanak had an impressive start. The Estonian was among the leading crews and climbed

to second by the end of the day despite struggling at times with poor notes from a difficult recce. Reigning champion Ogier led for four stages, winning only one of them, but the Frenchman slipped back when drying conditions late in the afternoon benefitted those on soft tyres. He was however only 6.5 seconds off the lead. Fourth was held by Mads Østberg who has had an uneventful day, unlike team-mate Kris Meeke who was competing in Portugal for the first time. Meeke struggled with a lack of comprehensive notes from the weather-struck recce, and ultimately went off the road on stage seven. Behind fifth-placed Sordo was team-mate Thierry Neuville. The Belgian suffered with understeer in the morning,
but had set another fastest time for the Hyundai i20 WRC in the afternoon. Henning Solberg and Juho Hänninen were seventh and eighth respectively. Both had a puncture in the morning, and Andreas Mikkelsen spent the day regaining his confidence in the Volkswagen Polo R WRC after a difficult event in Mexico three weeks previous. Martin Prokop rounded out the first ten. Other leading retirements of the day included Elfyn Evans who went off the road on the fourth stage, and Robert Kubica hit a tree and took a wheel off on the same stage. Jari-Matti Latvala was also a casualty. The Finn rolled on the following stage, when he took a fast right-hander too tight. His mechanics, along with those
Saturday saw another loop of three stages - each repeated twice, north-west of Faro. And straight away Ogier was the dominant force. The Frenchman won the opening stage to claim the lead after another win on the next stage. Despite Hirvonen pushing hard, Ogier gradually extended his advantage throughout the day, claiming a hat-trick of wins on the afternoon run, and he was heading into the final day with a comfortable lead. Behind secondplaced Hirvonen, Mads Østberg

moved into third after Fiesta RS WRC driver Ott Tanak rolled on stage 10 - a disappointing exit after an impressive show on the Friday. Dani Sordo continued to fly the flag for Hyundai, and impress a lot of people with his pace and he was fourth to produce a highly encouraging performance. Teammate Thierry Neuville was fifth, but in the penultimate stage he picked-up suspension damage, and a puncture. Despite losing time he maintained his position, but dropped yet more time on the final stage to slip to ninth. Henning Solberg now moved into fifth and Andreas Mikkelsen up to sixth. Mikkelsen was in rebuild mode, driving to regain confidence, and ensure a finish for the VW team, but he lost power steering on SS11. Martin Prokop, Juho Hänninen and Nasser Al-Attiyah - all driving a RRC - rounded out the front running drivers. After retiring the day before, Robert Kubica re-joined the field under Rally2 regulations, but he went off the road on the second stage, and damaged the clutch trying to get back on. Kris Meeke was the only driver unable to re-start because the roll cage in his DS3 WRC was too badly damaged. The final day consisted of three stages, including the power stage, and with tyre wear an important factor all weekend, it was a case of preservation for a lot of crews on the opening pair of stages for the final day in Portugal. Ogier was able to preserve his tyres, control the pace and cruised to his 12th victory with the Volkswagen team and fourth Rallye de Portugal
victory. The gap between Hirvonen and Østberg also left little to fight for with too few kilometres, although Østberg claimed the win in the middle stage. Dani Sordo, who started the morning in fourth position, was forced into a heart-breaking retirement on the road section to the first stage. The Spaniard went out with a broken front left drive-shaft. Andreas Mikkelsen claimed fourth, overhauling Henning Solberg during the latter stages. Martin Prokop finished sixth and Thierry Neuville managed to climb back to

seventh, despite only having rearwheel-drive on the final stage, after losing drive to the front of the car about 1km into the final stage. His team-mate Juho Hänninen finished just behind in eighth and WRC 2 championship competitors Nasser Al-Attiyah and Jari Ketomaa took the final positions in the first ten. At the finish a clearly delighted Ogier reported, “Four wins in five years. Rally Portugal is one of my favourites, and the whole week has been fantastic for Julien and me. The encouragement and support of the fans is rather special here. We only took as many risks as we needed too on soft tyres on the final day.” He went on to add, “The lead in the world championship is now a
For second-placed Mikko Hirvonen in the M-Sport Fiesta, it was a good rally, and he was pleased with his performance over the weekend. He said, “I’m really happy with this result. We came here wanting a good, clean rally and that is what we have done. The car has been absolutely perfect – and really competitive – all weekend so a big thanks to the boys for the top job they’ve done. He went on to say, “We knew that we had the pace. It was just a case of bringing everything together and I think that we did that this weekend. We’ll keep developing and learning, so hopefully we can fight even harder in the coming rallies.” Mads Østberg clinched third place in the Citroën DS3 WRC, and he took a point on the power stage as well, so his weekend for the team was again productive. He said, “This second podium finish of the season, the first on gravel, has been earned through the hard work done by the entire team since the start of the year. We are making progress at every rally and in each test session. This third place is an excellent result and the point from the power stage is a bonus. That was our aim before the start. We didn’t take too many risks during the rally. It augurs well for the rest of the season. We’ll be able to aim even higher in future.” P

In WRC2... It was Qatar’s Nasser Al-
Attiyah who took victory in WRC2, after a super battle with Jari Ketomaa, that saw a small margin of victory of just over eleven seconds. Before the final stage the Finnish driver was credited with ten seconds after he was delayed early in the event, and the pair began the test separated by 0.8sec as a result. But the decision came too late to advise Ketomaa and Al-Attiyah, who posted fastest time through the 13.8km test to win by 11.6 seconds. Reigning JWRC champion Pontus Tidemand finished third on his maiden outing in WRC 2. The Swede’s Fiesta R5 pulled clear of Karl Kruuda’s S2000 version to head the Estonian by 13.9 seconds. Bernardo Sousa was fifth with Robert Barrable/ Stuart Loudon sixth. Robert said, “It’s been another productive rally for us. The recce was difficult, then on the first stage we got blocked behind another competitor who went off and the road conditions were tricky, but we are here with more points towards our championship against top competition.”

Pärn’s Perfect Portugal In Drive DMACK Fiesta Trophy The Drive DMACK Fiesta Trophy delivered on its promise to provide close competition when the opening event saw five different drivers lead the series before Estonia’s Sander Pärn blasted home to steal victory on the final loop of stages at Rally de Portugal... The dramatic finish unfolded when Frenchman Quentin Gilbert, who started the final day at the head of the field, retired after a road accident on his way to the day’s first stage. Pärn (22) and co-driver James Morgan, who was making his FIA World Rally Championship debut, found themselves locked in a scintillating final day battle with Brits Tom Cave (22) and co-driver Craig Parry. After making a slow start to the day, which allowed Cave to move into a slender 0.4 second lead, Pärn upped the pace to take the opening round victory by 20.8 seconds.
2nd: Tom Cave / Craig Parry
Third place went to the Belgian duo Ghislain de Mévius (25) and Johan Jalet who put in a consistent drive on their first WRC event. The dramatic finish followed three days of arduous Algarve action on Portugal’s round of the world championship. The event kicked off the cost-
effective series which gave 12 aspiring drivers the opportunity to line up in M-Sport-prepared Ford Fiesta R2 rally cars shod with DMACK’s newly-developed gravel tyre. The opening sprint through the Tarmac street stage in Lisbon on the Thursday evening saw Spaniard José Suárez edge into an early lead but when the rally headed into the Serra do Caldeiro hills above Faro, Marius Aasen from Norway moved ahead after setting fastest times on the morning loop. However, he was sidelined with broken steering as exposed bedrock on the tough gravel stages battered the Fiestas. Saturday saw Yeray Lemes take the battle to Suárez with the pair locked in a day-long fight – trading seconds on every stage. But the intense pace saw them both make mistakes on the 31.9km Santana da Serra stage. Lemes was first to retire after pulling a rear wheel off his car with Suárez forced into a deep ditch after innocently clipping the inside of a slow corner.

With Gilbert’s rally ending on a non-competitive section, Pärn and Cave found themselves in a surprise fight for victory. Pärn was slow out of the blocks allowing Cave to briefly move into the lead by just 0.4 seconds and creating a nail-biting climax under sunny blue skies. But Pärn responded to shoot through the final two tests and clinch a deserved win to go top of the points table. Early leader Suárez fought back to fourth but boosted his championship position by taking an additional five points awarded for fastest stage times and moving up to third in the championship. Max Vatanen had a rally full of ups and downs. He showed a
surprising pace on his WRC debut to set two fastest times but rolled on the opening day, incurred a road accident on Saturday and retired early during the final day after sliding off the road. Szymon Kornicki from Poland, Nil Solans and ‘Crazy’ Leo Urlichich all had mixed events but benefitted from the WRC experience. Nicolas Amiouni from Lebanon retired early in the rally after a heavy crash on stage two. The Trophy resumes with Lotos Rally Poland on 27-29 June.

Bogie’s Border Blast… David Bogie led from start-to-finish in his Ford Focus WRC to win the Brick & Steel Border Counties Rally for a third time, and chalk-up his first victory in the 2014 ARR Craib MSA Scottish Rally Championship.

The five-time title holder from Dumfries, co-driven by Kevin Rae, was fastest through four of the five forest stages to finish 47 seconds ahead of the Focus of Stephen Petch from Bishop Auckland. Bogie’s main championship rival, Euan Thorburn from Duns, also in a Focus, finished third overall, a further four seconds adrift. Since Petch, who had finished third on the event in 2013, is not registered for the SRC, the result means Thorburn – winner of last month’s season-opener in Inverness – now has a provisional two point lead over Bogie after two rounds. While the conditions in Kielder Forest were nowhere near as treacherous as those of twelve months ago, they were still extremely tricky, with snow lying on the two opening stages. It made tyre choice difficult, and required a high degree of confidence and commitment behind the wheel. “With the two-wheel-drive competitors running ahead of us, there were tramlines in the snow on the opening stage, but getting the braking points right wasn’t easy,” explained Bogie at the finish in Jedburgh. “As the day wore on, conditions improved. We had a bit of a misfire at one stage, but it was nothing serious. Overall, our pace was pretty good, and I felt comfortable in the car. It was important we got the win.” Thorburn, co-driven by Paul Beaton from Inverness, was second pacenotes MAY 2014

fastest through SS2, Bewshaugh, and third quickest through the third and final stages. The Borderer admitted they had not had their troubles to seek. He said, “On stage one we had a puncture. The second stage was alright, but on stage three, the windscreen steamed up so we lost a bit of time right at the end because we couldn’t see – it was like crawling along in first gear. On the fourth stage we stalled

at a hairpin and on five, which was very rough, we just drove through to get to the finish.” Jock Armstrong, who was competing for only the second time with navigator Paula Swinscoe, achieved his first finish on the Border Counties in the last four attempts – the Castle Douglas driver ended the day fourth overall, third in the points, in his Subaru
Impreza. “We’ve had a little bit of luck today – there were several moments which could have gone either way. The first stage wasn’t easy, particularly with dislodged snow, but we were second quickest behind David,” said Armstrong. “Once I’d got my head round the conditions it was a case of keeping the car on the road and going for the finish. And Paula and I were really getting into the groove.”

Quintin Milne, runner-up on the Snowman, and winner of the Border Counties in 2013 alongside co-driver Martin Forrest from Aberdeen, struggled with suspension settings on his EVO 9. “They’re actually the same as those used by Barry (Groundwater) but they don’t suit me. It makes the car too tail happy,” explained Milne.
He went on to say, “We were first of the four-wheel-drive cars onto the stages, and although there was a tramline in the snow from the earlier two-wheel-drive cars, those conditions don’t suit my exuberant driving style, when you need to drive a neat tarmac line with snow either side. We hit a chicane at one point and bashed in a rear door.” Leading Group N competitor Andrew Gallacher, with Phil Sandham on the notes, finished a fine sixth overall in his newfor-2014 Lancer E9, and he was more than satisfied with the result, given the conditions. He said, “The stages were far from easy, but it was the same for everyone. We didn’t have any major issues. The car was down on power on the Snowman, but we got that sorted, and I think it’s now running as well as it ever will.” Last year’s runner-up Barry Groundwater from Stonehaven ended the day eighteen seconds back in seventh overall, in his Lancer, and admitted to being over-cautious. “It was an OK sort of day, but I think I was affected by memories of all the ice and snow on last year’s event,” said Groundwater, co-driven by Elgin’s Neil Shanks. Ireland’s Brenden Cumiskey registered with the championship on the morning of the event, and marked the occasion with an impressive eighth - and a good haul of points - at the wheel of his

Mitsubishi. The Dundalk-based driver was paired with navigator Ronan O’Kane. Peter Taylor and Paul Hughes were eighth in a Ford Fiesta D2000, eight seconds further back. Banchory’s Bruce McCombie finished tenth. He reported, “The clutch pedal went to the floor on the last stage, and we had a small problem with the turbo manifold when it went into safe mode about four miles from the end,” said McCombie, who had Michael Coutts on the notes. Mark McCulloch and James Haugh were a further eight seconds adrift in their Subaru, after surviving an early scare. McCulloch finished just three seconds ahead of Inverness duo Dougal Brown and Lewis Rochford in an EVO 9. Brown said, “We had a bit of a moment in the snow on the second stage and got pulled into a ditch. We also picked up a slow puncture on the back right, and put on an old spare. As a result we struggled with grip for the next two stages.” Fraser Wilson and new co-driver Jane Nicol were sixteen seconds back in his Lancer to follow up on their promising start together on the Snowman. The Wigtownshire driver finished the day second in Group N in his

Mitsubishi Lacer E9. Arguably the drive of the day went to Steve Bannister in his Ford Escort Mk2. For the fourth time in recent years, the Yorkshireman, with Louise Sutherland navigating, finished as the event’s leading two-wheel-drive competitor having ended the day nineteenth overall. The pair were the first onto the stages, and, as such, had fresh snow to contend with. After a tentative start, Bannister steadily picked up the pace and subsequently came out top in the tussle with fellow historicclass Escort stalwarts Matthew Robinson and Andy Kelly. Lauder’s Callum Atkinson, with Keith Riddick navigating, won Class 7 in a Ford Fiesta ST, while John MacCrone and Stuart Louden in a Ford Fiesta R200 took the overall win in the 1600cc category. However, maximum championship points went to the Dalbeattiebased Vauxhall Nova crew of Iain Wilson and Keith Fremantle, who made amends after crashing out on the Snowman. Iain Haining and Mairi Riddick bounced back from a non-finish on the season-opener with a dominant display in Class 3 in his Vauxhall Nova. He reported, “We

had a couple of minor niggles. The heater motor packed up and it steamed up a bit, and one of the bolts fell out of the rear wheel hub on the passenger side. We heard it rattling going into the fourth stage, so we borrowed a spanner at the start and tightened them up”. He ended the day two and a half minutes in front of nearest rivals Charles Blair and Mark Roberts who were the top-placed Peugeot 205 crew. Blair said, “We were leading the class after the first stage, but Iain took a good chunk out of us on stage two and we decided just to take it steady and make sure we stayed in front amongst the 205 cars. So a really good day for us,” said Blair. Scott Macbeth from Rosemarkie, and Kintore co-driver Ashleigh Will took the Class 2 victory in their Vauxhall Nova. “It was my first time driving in snow, so it was a bit of a learning curve. The car was mis-firing a bit as well. We’ll need to get that sorted,” said Macbeth. There were twenty seven retirements, among them Mike Faulkner and Peter Foy, who finished third at the previous round, crashed out in their Lancer Evo 9 on the final stage. Other non-finishes included Portlethen’s

Taylor Triumphs on Trackrod Lookout! Event: Lookout Stages Rally. Organiser: Trackrod Motor Club Date: 6th April, 2014 Where: Melbourne Airfield, Nr York. Championships: EMAMC; ANWCC; Melbourne Rally Challenge. Stages: 8. Stage miles: 58. Surface: Mixed. Starters: 50. Finishers: 45.
Alex Taylor and Jack Shepherd snatched a last stage victory bringing their Subaru Forester home in pole position, after long-time leaders Aaron Newby and Tom Woodburn retired their Subaru Impreza with a broken rear differential. Taylor had been quickest through the opening stage, but broke a drive-shaft on the startline of SS2 allowing Newby to take a lead he would hold right up until his retirement. Neil Raven and Ann Forster kept their Impreza in third throughout despite being limited to gravel tyres and running with a leaking brake hose. In contrast Gary Wayne and Tony Szubert only had tarmac tyres on their Impreza and

finished the opening stage in tenth place. Their progress was further hampered on the following stage after the suspension front armmounting pin ripped out from the chassis leg putting their service crew under pressure to fix it prior to SS3. Thereafter they made steady progress up the standings and their fastest time on the final stage was rewarded with the runners-up spot. Ian Tiffany and Graham White’s Impreza was equipped with a new engine, but a rear biased brake set-up left the driver describing his approach to some of the corners as interesting. They finished the day as Class 5 winners and fourth
overall ahead of Ross Daniels and Paul Mankin’s Impreza. Both Subarus overhauled the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 6 of Dave Hornbrook and Nick Coleman, who slipped to sixth on the final stage after breaking a front cross-member, engine mounting and drive-shaft. Hugh Peat and Tom Murphy were next up ahead of fellow Impreza crew Allister Wells and Daniel Chambers. It was a great comeback by Wells, who had finished SS1 in thirty-ninth place after dropping two minutes with a misfire that was caused by a chaffed crank sensor wire. Class 3 winners Mark Midgley and Chris Hudson finished ninth in their Ford Escort Mk1, having previously been as high as fourth, with Lee and Craig Burgess completing the first ten in another Impreza. Ant and Nick Carr took Class 0 honours in their Micra, while Rich
Boyes, co-driven on this occasion by Robert Robinson, repeated his 2013 Class 1 winning heroics in his Rover 25. Peugeot 106 pairing Joe Cunningham and Daniel Kennedy secured the Class 2 prizes, while Class 4 honours went to Mike Herrington and Rachel Heel in their Ford Escort Mk2. P

Cookstown Motor Club
organised the Donaldson Fuels sponsored round of the ANICC Navigation Championship on Friday 28 March. This year saw an increase in the number of competitors in Navigation Rallying, with 18 of the 19 starters finishing the event. The Cookstown event was probably the toughest n the ANICC Championship and the high number of finishers is testament to the determination and skills of the crews participating. The route proved to be a real challenge and whilst enjoyable for drivers, some instructions issued to classes one

and two caused headaches for most co-drivers, evidenced by the penalties accumulated! Early leaders of the event were Class 1 crew Leslie and Gareth Hawe in their Clio, some five points clear of Ciaran Carey and Rachael Muldoon in their Nova, as well as Leslie Young with Lewis Boyd in their Vectra, who were joint second having dropped seven points on arrival at the first relaxed section.
In Class 2 the early leaders by a margin of 32 points were Gerry Green and Mickey McElwee in their Subaru from Ronnie and Aaron Mitchell. Class 3 was being closely contested by Brian Hanna and Paul Forsythe in their Saxo, as well as Malcolm Johnston and Michael Gilmore in their Skoda, with just one point separating them at the first relaxed section. Metro crew and Class 4 leaders Philip & Kyle Somerville had an 11 point advantage on Fermanagh crew Gerry Cavanagh and Darren Flanagan, who were taking great care of their immaculate Ford Anglia. By the end on the event, the overall winners were Leslie and Gareth Hawe (63 penalties) with Ciaran Carey and Rachael
Muldoon a very creditable second (87 penalties). “I’d like to thank everyone involved in the event,” said Clerk of the Course, Wayne Turkington. “We have a great ongoing sponsor though Donaldson Fuel, and we had great support and participation from all the competitors as well as the officials who give so much of their time to help on these events.” “Thanks also to the whole team at Cookstown Motor Club, who always pull together to organise and run some great events. It makes the job of CoC so much easier when you have such a great team.” P

Third Weeton Win For Flying Finch! Barnard gained second on SS9 before Barker repossessed, while White recorded fastest SS10 time to grab fourth ahead of Riley.
Event: 2014 Merrills Motor Services & Rally Car Hire SMC Stages. Date: 23rd March 2014. Venue: Weeton Army Barracks, Nr Blackpool. Surface: Tarmac. Stages: 10. Stage Miles: 54. Organisers: Stockport 061 Motor Club. Championships: ANWCC; ANCC; SD34. Starters: 50. Finishers: 31.
Tim Finch recorded his third
win at Weeton, six years after his last success at the Fylde Coast venue, as he and co-driver Neil Bye enjoyed a trouble free run to take a comfortable victory in their Subaru Impreza. Andrew Barker and Steve Mort snatched the runners-up spot with a last stage charge in their Citroen C2 VTR, edging four seconds ahead of the Impreza of Richard Barnard and Chris SharpeSimkiss. Ross Fernie and John Young set the early pace, but gearbox problems forced them out on SS6 at which point their closest challengers were Graham Butler and Walter Ainsworth. The Ford Focus duo headed the standings, but an under-bonnet fire following the stage finish put them out,

handing pole position to David and Mathew White’s Impreza. Their tenure of top spot was short lived as they missed a split and the Impreza of their closest rivals Derek Blyth/Phil Peak retired after a power steering pipe burst causing a fire. That left Finch in the lead with a comfortable one minute, twenty second advantage over Dave Riley. Riley slipped to fifth after being forced to complete most of SS8 with a puncture as Barker leap-frogged Wesley and Ryan Simpson’s Mk2 to grab second.
Escort bragging rights went to the Simpsons, who finished sixth ahead of Darren and Scott Howard’s example. Peugeot 205 pairing James and David Blyth took the Class B awards after finishing eighth ahead of Antony Dixon and Ryan Moyler’s Astra which suffered handling problems after a gearbox mounting broke. Impreza crew David Gardner and Sam Bartlett completed the top ten when the similar car of Jeff Simm and Graham Hutchinson broke a steering arm after hitting a kerb. John Lay’s return to the sport following a 14 year absence ended when he and his son Gareth retired their Lancer with drive-
shaft failure whereas a problematic prop-shaft accounted for Julian Hope and Mark Townsend’s Evo 7. Mark Borthwick and Aaron Newby’s debut outing in the exSimon Mauger Escort Mk2 was cut short by power steering failure. Andrew and Reg Irving had a trouble-free run in their 205, finishing thirteenth overall and winning Class A. P

Hill made a push and was starting to take time out of the leader too, until his charge came to an end as he retired on stage 9. Scott Barnes also lost time and retired also. Corner and Camp where still in full control, with Lloyd and Davies duelling for second after Hill’s retirement. Lloyd pushed hard to ease himself clear to hold position. Lloyd put a fine run in on the last

Ron Aiken and Brian Neale where having a good run also, but dropped time putting them back to eighth on the final stage. Blomqvist and cederBerg - audi quattro - argentina rally 1984
It seems like only yesterday the WRC first went down to Rally Argentina in Cordoba, but in fact it was 30 years ago! The world championship
arrived in South America in 1980, spent two years based up at Tucuman (during which time the WRC also went to Brazil), missed a year because of the South Atlantic conflict, and went down to southern central Argentina, in San Carlos de Bariloche. We were assured that Cordoba would be the rally’s spiritual home in the future, and so it has been except for 1992 when it made a quick return to Tucuman. Things were very different in those days. Each year there was a ceremonial start in the evening at Buenos Aires, and the cars were driven overnight up-country ready for the stages 700 km away in the morning. There were four days of competition, with the total stage distance in 1984 reaching 948km. Foreign entries that year were few, desperately bad in fact,

just works Audi Quattros for Stig Blomqvist (who won by over three minutes) and Hannu Mikkola. Audi’s championship rival, Lancia, did not enter. That year we had time to discover a lot more about the delights of the country, and savour the heartland of Argentina’s rallying life. It was the first time we discovered Villa Carlos Paz, the lakeside resort town west of Cordoba, where the rally would eventually be centred. Cordoba is the centre of Argentina’s manufacturer industries and is the country’s second biggest town. But for rally fans the speciality was the range of rolling hills west of Villa Carlos Paz, called the Traslasiera hills. The roads in the area are hard sandy-based, used as public roads and therefore with firm foundations, and steeped in
motorsport history. In the old cityto-city racing days, Villa Carlos Paz was a staging post in the biggest of these events, the Gran Premio, which in 1960 was won by the works Mercedes of the Swedish lady driver Ewy Rossqvist. Fitting therefore that the 1984 WRC event was won by Blomqvist. Since 1984 the years have rushed past, and so have circumstances. In 1994 Didier Auriol won the event by just six seconds from Carlos Sainz. In 1999 there was a special event, the final major motorsport event of the old millennium, 15-yearsago, the Masters Rally, when a range of world champion drivers were invited down to Argentina, for a stadium event which went disastrously wrong, but I would not have wanted to miss a minute of the weekend. It is the closeness of motorsport

history in the area which I always found the most captivating. The late Jose Froilan Gonzalez popped into the press office at Cordoba stadium to see us at work, Carlos Alberto Reutemann told me his first ever competition was on a gravel and asphalt public road circuit which took in one of the Rally Argentina stages, Reutemann to this day holds the record of achieving the best position in a WRC event by a Formula 1 driver. Perhaps the most deeply rooted memory was when I first met the late Jorge Recalde. It was when he came to Portugal in 1980, his first event in Europe, and he told me about his home town Mina Clavero. It was in the hills where the rally now passes, which in those days was only reached after driving around 100km on gravel roads. His happiest personal memory was a special one.

European drivers were invited in 1972, all competing in identical Fiat 125 cars – which a completely unknown local 21-year-old won. The course used 42 years ago remains. It was a combination of what we now call Guilio Cesare and El Condor stages. Sadly Jorge died of a heart attack in action in 2001, in fact not quite in the best way. He was pushing his broken down rally car. One of my dearest memories of Rally Argentina was when Juan Manual Fangio made a special trip from America down to Argentina to meet Carlo Sainz, the first Spanish-speaking rally world champion. He did it because he
would feel honoured if they had the chance to meet. Emotions are never far away in Cordoba. Ari Vatanen gave everyone a very hard time emotionally in 1985 when he had the horrific accident which very nearly cost him his life. We were so sure there had been tragedy that a colleague and I drove back to wait for the stage to be opened and see exactly what had
happened. Nine years later Ari was back again in Villa Carlos Paz, cheerily signing pictures of his wrecked Peugeot, and intent on more havoc. I am standing at what any experienced rallyman could have considered a very safe place, when the Escort he was now driving came at me completely out of control, far away from the racing line. I had the last laugh. The picture I took before I ran for refuge was absolutely sharp. We have been through good times and bad in Cordoba province, never forgettable. Things have changed completely. English is now the normally spoken language at the rally, plane tickets are logged in by computer, not by haphazard telephonic attention to reconfirmation procedures. Nowadays you do not have to
travel from the international to the downtown airport in Buenos Aires in order to reach Cordoba. You can easily and conveniently travel via Santiago in Chile. Try, however, to forget the fate of the British airliner that went missing over the Andes and which was not found for 50 years.  Houses are springing up all over the place, none so sad as the block of flats which sits on the site where the delightful La Casona restaurant used to be. Europeans are no longer the visitors from outer space, whose attendance commanded hotels to erect banners which announced that celebrated teams and even journalists were staying there. But still there is the welcome and the friendly smiles and best of all, the beefsteaks! P

THE STEPHEN WRIGHT DIARY
A Manic Month! Hi everyone, This months instalment comes during a very busy period. I have just unpacked my bags from our last visit to Belgium and have begun packing for the Circuit of Ireland, our first ever European Rally Championship event. It’s nice to not have to remember to pack plug adapters! Our last trip to Belgium for the TAC Rally, based in the welcoming town of Tielt in West Flanders, was a fruitful one. We came away with second place in the 208 Rally Trophy and were also selected by a jury as the Junior prize winners. So along with our 208 prize winnings, we also receive a free entry to the next round of the Championship. The event was far from straightforward with 16 stages consisting of different surfaces, many cuts and requiring a lot of concentrating. I contested the pre-event shakedown and after just a few passes I realised a good recce was going to be crucial. Thankfully we were able to pull this off and produce a surprising result for both ourselves and some of the other competitors. The car was faultless and the team done a fantastic job to ensure that everything went to plan. The result most definitely couldn’t have happened without them. So now we look forward to the Circuit of Ireland. We have registered for the Junior ERC which will no doubt again provide some tough opposition but we are feeling comfortable in the car and hopeful of a good result. Bobby Willis and his team seem to have laid a fantastic event and we are all thrilled to be a part of it. By the time you read this, it will all be over! Provided all goes to plan, we then travel to Rally de Wallonie the following week so it really is all go this month. Make sure you pick up next month’s Pacenotes or, better yet, subscribe to make sure and find out how we got on!

At the finish of the nine stages that made up the Midland Moto Stage Rally, Dungannon’s Paddy McVeigh at the wheel of a Subaru Impreza WRC said, “I really didn’t expect to beat Daniel - to be honest.”

Clerk of the Course, Gerry Kelly
produced a compact, but testing loop of stages to the North and West of Roscommon town, as well as including a shakedown stage on the Saturday not to mention the Twin Cam Award. The rally began well for John Warren and Ruth Ann O’Connor when they won a free entry, one of the promotional ideas for the event that seemed to work well. The entry list was strong, with the likes of Chris Armstrong and Tommy Clinton seeded at number one, followed by Daniel McKenna in his Ford Escort MkII with the Monaghan man co-driven by Arthur Kierans. Rodney Wilton
c2: daVid Keller/dean o’sulliVan
and Conor McMahon were at number three, also in an Escort and the Subaru Impreza WRC of Paddy McVeigh and Gary McElhinney would start at four. When you add in Barry Meade, Gary Kiernan and Brian Brogan, all in Escorts along with the likes of Tommy Doyle and Joe McGonigle in Renault Clios, the battle at the frony was going to be a furious one. The opening Donamon stage saw the Subaru WRC of McVeigh throw down the gauntlet, with a time of 6:56.7, just 1.2secs ahead of the McKenna Escort. Tom Flaherty had slotted into third,
c3: PacKie duffy/colin duffy
with David Leonard in fourth. The opening stage had been wet, and conditions difficult with McKenna admitting to a spin on the stage. The pace was such that the top ten were covered by less than seven seconds. Stage two was Fourmilehouse, and McVeigh kept the lead over McKenna, but Wilton had now moved into third in the Escort with Barry Meade now into fourth. The battle though between McVeigh and McKenna was intense, and delighting all those on the stages who were able to see it. By the time the cars arrived at

service in Roscommon, though, it was McVeigh that still led from a hard charging McKenna. Wilton and Meade held third and fourth respectively, but Tommy Doyle was now into fifth using a Renault Clio, the Philip Casey-run machine was revelling in the conditions. McKenna said, “Its been a good battle so far with Paddy, and the roads are slipery, but it looks like it may dry out, so we will just have to wait and see.” David Leonard was in sixth in the Mitsubishi, with Gary Kiernan seventh just sixteen seconds back, with Chris Armstrong and Tommy Clinton eighth.

With the stages drying out as predicted, McKenna set out on a charge, that took him onto the lead, but by only just over a second. The battle between McKenna and McVeigh over the Donamon stage had not let up. Third fastest time on the stage was Tom Flaherty with Jordan Leon in a Ford Escort albeit sixteen seconds down. Tommy Doyle was now showing in third, the drying roads suiting the Renault Clio, with Chris Armstrong up into fourth. Stage five, was a re-run of Fourmilehouse, and only 0.7secs separated the two leading crews, with McKenna just holding the lead over McVeigh to just over a second. Tommy Doyle and Liam Moynihan were not hanging around at all, but such was the pace by the leading duo, they held onto third overall, but nearly a minute further back. Chris Armstrong and Tommy Clinton were in fourth, a further fifteen seconds down on Doyle, with Flaherty holding fifth, just ahead of Gary Kiernan. Neil and Gerard Tohill held onto seventh in a Mitsubishi, with the Toyota Starlet of Richard Moffett and Martin Connelly in eighth. By the time Ballybeg, stage six, was completed and the cars were back in service, all the talk was about the battle between the leading duo. The battle had been fierce over the six stages completed so far, and McKenna was enjoying the day. He said, “Yes, it has been a

good rally, and a good battle with Paddy. He’s on some pace and it is fun to be in the middle of it. The car is going well, so we will see what the last loop brings.” Less than half a second split the two leaders as they headed out for the last three stages. The battle was going to go all the way. Third-placed Tommy Doyle held the postion since the fourth stage, and he had an advantage over fourth-placed Chris Armstrong of around eight seconds. Fifth was now Michel Garbin, with Emmet McCooey co-driving in the Mitsubishi. The pair led the Ford Escort of Tom Flaherty and Jordan Leon by just over two seconds. Over the final loop of three stages, McVeigh and McKenna were never more than a few seconds apart, with the former always doing just enough to keep the rear-wheel-drive Escort at bay. The battle was still as intense, and one that thrilled the crowds on the stages, as the pair fought hard over the remainder of the route to take a victory. In the end Paddy McVeigh and Gary McElhinney won by just over nine seconds in their Subaru Impreza WRC, from Daniel McKenna and Arthur Kierans in the Ford Escort. The Dungannon and Monaghan duo, had fought all event long, and driven well throughout the day.

At the finish McVeigh said, “It has been a superb battle here all day, and we have really enjoyed it. I really didn’t expect to beat Daniel to be honest, but it has been a great contest with him.” For McKenna the Midland Stages was a rare outing in his Escort. He said, “It has been a good day, and a great battle with Paddy. The pace was good, and I am sure the spectators enjoyed it, as did we. Congratulations to him and Gary. He did well.” Tommy Doyle and Liam Moynihan took third in their Renault Clio, and were happy with their pace to head off the Ford Escort of Chris Armstrong and Tommy Clinton by just over sixteen seconds. Favourite rally & why? I’m going to go with The Sligo Stages rally last year (2013). It was my first event as a co-driver with Cormac and apart from being extremely nervous I loved every minute of it, and I’d hate it if he got another co-driver now. The stages were challenging and exciting. It was a lot for my first rally, but we got through it and we got second in 11F which I was definitely very happy with, with it being my first rally and all!
Favourite rally driver & why?
I’m going to say Damien Mc Carthy because I have spoke to him a few times along with Cormac and he is a lovely guy, who has give Cormac a lot of advice and re-assured him on a lot of things to do with the rally car and rallies. For a guy who doesn’t know us and who we haven’t been rallying with all that long, he doesn’t have any problem giving us information. It is a great gesture. He is a very down to earth guy and a great rally driver with many wins and achivements over the years.
Favorite moment in rallying?
I will never forget the first moment I sat in a rally car and headed to the first stage in Sligo last year (2013). To say I was nervous was an understatment for sure. While we were sitting at the start line I was on the verge of crying and I just wanted to get out of the car, and the whole way down that stage Cormac kept asking me was I okay, because my voice was so shakey. The embarrassment! Thank God that has gone now and I love getting into our Honda. The adrelin rush I get is just amazing. Also our first win of the Dunlop championship at the Cuircit of Kerry recently was definitely among the great moments.

Best event attended?
Every year we attend the Rally of the Lakes. It is definitely a favourite from across the years. We have never taken part in the rally, but the event is definitely on our to-do-list. Hopefully we will compete at it next year. We drove Molls Gap one year and we were in Killarney and the two of us both said it has to be done sometime for sure. We loved it, even in our road car.
Who helped you in motorsport? It definitely has got to be Cormac, his family and the sponsors. There would be no rallying without them that’s for sure.
Biggest disappointment in Rallying for you?
So far - because we are competing in the Dunlop Billy Coleman Award for this year (2014) - it would be the first round of the Dunlop championship in Ballina when we had been going great the whole day despite the weather conditions and the outrageous road conditions, and unfortunately we clipped a rock and ended up having to retire, which was a great disappointment so early in the championship race.
Best bit of advice ever given to you?
I haven’t had too much advice because I am only a new to the rallying scene, but I had Killian Duffy give me some great advice on what to do with my notes in terms of better preparation and I got this advice just before The Midlands Rally this year (2014). I have to say it really was great advice that he gave me. He is such a lovely guy and he is so down to earth and helpful. I love his notes.

KERRY GOLD! Reigning Dunlop National Rally champions Declan and Brian Boyle (Subaru WRC) took an emphatic victory in the Tralee based Fels Points Hotel Circuit of Kerry Rally - the second round of the series.

The Cork/Derry duo of Daragh O’Riordan/Tony McDaid (Ford Fiesta WRC) were a minute and 4.3 seconds further behind. Several of the top ten crews retired during the event, among them European Rally Championship leaders, Craig Breen/Scott Martin (Peugeot 208 T16), who slid off the road on the fifth stage. On the opening stage, Mount
Eagle, to the east of Castleisland, Boyle was quickest - 5.5 seconds ahead of Breen with Hunter 9.7 seconds further behind in third. James Stafford in his rear-wheeldrive Darrian T90 was fourth in a first six completed by the Subaru of Kevin Kelleher and Daragh O’Riordan in a Ford Fiesta. Sam Moffett converted his Fiesta to Regional Rally Car (RRC) specification, and he was an early seventh. Boyle also dominated the remaining two stages of the loop, Headley’s Bridge and Kielduff and he returned to the Tralee
service park with a commanding lead of 44.5 seconds. However, the rally leader remarked that the tyre compound he had selected was far too soft. Meanwhile, second-placed Hunter reckoned his Subaru was down on power along with having fuel pressure problems during the entire loop of stages. Kevin Kelleher (Subaru WRC) was quite happy with his third position, and opined that he had made the right tyre selection. Hot on the heels of the Cork driver was James Stafford - despite his Darrian having a transmission glitch - he was three tenths of a

Hunter’s Subaru still suffered with low fuel pressure and he lost significant time on the faster sections of the stages. An untroubled Stafford moved to third, and he was followed by a somewhat downbeat Daragh O’Riordan (Ford Fiesta WRC). Kenny McKinstry held fifth as Sam Moffett continued to acclimatise to the Fiesta RRC. The Subaru WRC duo of Niall Maguire and Paddy McVeigh slotted into seventh and eighth respectively. The final places in the top ten were occupied by Steve Wood

Hunter claimed his first batch of Dunlop points with O’Riordan (Ford Fiesta WRC) taking third following the demise of James Stafford, who crashed out on the penultimate stage.
Killarney’s Ed Murphy (Escort) won the category for modified cars – his rival Mike Quinn (Escort) retired on stage seven with mechanical failure. The Tinns had held a seven
second advantage going into the penultimate stage, but engine failure side-lined their Proton Millington putting a premature end to a close battle for supremacy. Tristan Pye and Stewart Merry were quickest through stage one, the Subaru Impreza crew stopped the clocks a second up on Stone. Tying for third at this early juncture, a further three seconds in arrears, were Karl and Guy Simmons and fellow Impreza incumbents Johnnie Ellis and Dave Green. The Tinns were next, followed by Dave Turnbull and Howard Pridmore’s Impreza WRC whose time was matched by Craig Pennington and Wayne Priest’s Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9. Turnbull’s participation was cut short when he crashed out on SS2, the incident causing the stage to be stopped to allow the Ambulance access, and a number of crews were forced to accept notional times. Pye was one, slipping to fifth place as a consequence, as Stone now headed the standings
followed by Tinn, Simmons and Pennington. Stone’s reign at the top of the standings was short-lived after he dropped 20 seconds with a stall and allowed Tinn, Simmons and Pye to move ahead of him in the standings. David White and David Scorah’s hopes of a top ten finish were about to end with their Impreza’s gearbox stuck in third.
ClaSS a: ian BarnarD/anDy Bull
Stone then hit back with a set of three fastest stage times to reduce the deficit to Tinn to seven seconds by the end of SS7. Simmons, who was contesting the rally as a test following his gearbox woes in Birr, was now third, but was excluded at this point with his car being deemed to be too noisy. The top two matched times on SS8 where Pye, despite being baulked
Notwithstanding Tinn’s retirement, Stone set fastest time on the penultimate stage, seventeen seconds better than his closest challengers Andrew Bayliss and Chris Sharpe-Simkiss in the BMW Compact. The Fabia pilot was fastest again on the final test to record a winning margin in excess of a minute ahead of the battling Imprezas of Pye and Ellis. Proton Millington pairing Alan Oldfield and Steve McNulty recovered from a slow start-tofinish fourth and claim Class E honours ahead of Pennington. A fine performance from sixthplaced Bayliss was rewarded with the Class D awards, while Class C winners Martin Hodgson and Tony Jones were pleased with their new suspension settings on their seventh-placed Ford Escort Mk2. Royston and Bridge Carey kept their Renault Clio in front of the MG Metro 6R4 of Simon Chapman and Michael Calvert, who had screen misting and gear linkage problems in the early stages. were the class of the field as they won the Marshall and Hicks Print Media Tour of Caerwent, by just over twenty-five seconds from the Darrian T90 of Steve and Michael O’Leary. After a late charge third overall went to Gary Le Cadou and Tony Bassett in a Toyota Corolla WRC. Willet was fastest on the opening stage, from the Mitsubishi of Martyn and Dawn England. Richard Merriman and Kath Curzon were third fastest. With Willet extending his lead on the second stage by three seconds from O’Leary, who had now moved ahead of Merriman and into second overall. Le Cadou
meanwhile, needed to make changes to the settings on his WRC Corolla, finding the set-up used on Epynt not to his liking at the Chepstow venue. Setting equal fastest time on stage three proved the changes worked. Willett then dropped time later in the day, but made up for the loss with a second fastest time on sage five to maintain his position at the head of the field. O’Leary pipped him for the stage win, and he was now comfortable in second, in the Darrian, ahead of Le Cadou who was ruing his slower start to the day. On the final stage Merriman and Cousins overhauled England in the Mitsubishi to take fourth and top points in the Welsh championship. Dave Parnell took sixth - he headed home the Mitsubishi Lancer E9 of Rob and James Tout. P

Perez Pips Petch in Somerset! A quick glance of the results might suggest this was just a close encounter between a couple of Ford Focus WRC crews, but there was more to this Somerset Stages than that. Far more in fact.
Paul Bird and Aled Davies reigned supreme for much of the day after storming over the opening Porlock Toll Road test five seconds quicker than fellow Focus WRC incumbents Steve Perez and Paul Spooner. David Weston (Jnr) and Kirsty Riddick were a further four seconds adrift in a Subaru Impreza WRC with Stephen Petch and Ian Windress just another second down in their familiar Focus WRC. Event local favourites Martyn and Dawn England got off to a

Class RF1.0: Sam Bilham and Graham Wild’s plan to push from the start in order to build an early lead paid dividends, and they eventually finished over a minute and half ahead of fellow Nissan Micra crew Jon and John Steer. Class RF1.4: Phillip Harris and Ross Whittock claimed top honours in their Daihatsu Sirion finishing almost a minute ahead of the MG ZR of Rory Jones and Tom Hughes, who experienced alternator problems in the early stages. More trouble for the MG crew came when they hit 27/11/12

A faulty ignition coil put an early end to the day for the Focus WRC crew after the stage finish. The second run over the tarmac test saw the top five times set by the same crews in the same order, so the only difference to

Class RF1.6: Sole entrants James West and Steve Eggington only had to get their VW Polo home to claim the awards. They finished 44th overall. That meant the difference going into the final Bats Close five miler was four seconds, and with Perez’s intercom starting to play up Petch recorded his third fastest time of the day to level their aggregate times. Perez’s better time through Porlock earned him the victory, and Petch had to settle for being the BTRDA bridesmaid in the cruellest of circumstances. Weston marked his return to the sport after an eight-month absence with an impressive podium result on his first Somerset outing finishing almost a minute ahead of the Lancer Evo 9 of Luke Francis and John Roberts. It had been an eventful day for the Welsh crew, who survived an off in Knowle, smashed a wheel in Slowley Wood and lost their intercom in Bats Castle. A close fight saw the N4 honours being decided by just a second in favour of Tom Naughton and Andi Mort who finished fifth overall ahead of rival Lancer Evo 9 pairing Pat Naylor and Ian Lawrence. Naylor took the early lead when Naughton spun on Porlock and increased his advantage to ten seconds when his rival spun on Croydon. A change of suspension settings saw Naughton halve that deficit going into the final stage from which he

Runners-up Nick Dobson and Steve Pugh suffered an early scare when their Escort Mk2 stopped on a road section following SS1. Fortunately a tap on the ECU with a spanner did the trick and the car fired up again. Jody Bowcott and David Millard finished third in another Escort. It may be early days with just three rounds gone and dropped scores yet to make their mark, but all indications point to another fascinating battle for BTRDA Gold Star glory in the coming months. Favourite Rally and why?
It has to be the Donegal International Rally. In my opinion it is the biggest event in Ireland for any rally team. Over the years I attended the event as a spectator, and in 2013 I had the pleasure of contesting in it. I must say it was amazing! It has some of the best stages in Ireland with iconic areas such as Knockalla.
Occupation: Operations manager at Environgrind Age: 22 Road Car: Ford Transit
Favourite Rally Driver and why?
Without a doubt Colin McRae was my favourite. Colin’s passion and determination was awesome to watch with his if in doubt flat out style of driving. He may only have won one world title, but the impact he had on rallying is one that will live forever.
Favorite moment in rallying?
This year I contested in the Galway International
which always gets a huge and a very competitive entry. I had a great time with my co-driver, Chris Melly. We punched hard to go home in a solid fourth and first in class 11R. Also I must add that picking up a nomination for the Billy Coleman award this year in my favourite moments.
Best Event attended? I have done a fair few events, and I must say that the Skibbereen District Rally is a great event. It has good, fast
and enjoyable stages and the night out afterwards isn’t too bad either.
Kiernan told me, “Don’t wipe your eyes in the middle of a stage.”
Biggest Disappointment in Rallying for you?
Sponsors are...
Back in 2013 we where in a close battle for the Irish Junior Championship, when at the Galway Summer stages we suffered a mechanical failure, which ended our event.
Best bit of advice ever given to you?

he production category in the world of rallying has always been amongst the most popular and probably the most competitive classes in the sport. These rally cars are the closest relatives to their road-going counterparts and must adhere to strict regulations regarding the modifications and enhancements made to vehicles. Arguably, the regulations are designed to help keep costs affordable and to a minimum...although that very much depends on your definition of 'affordable' - nothing is cheap in rallying! Notable SucceSSeS On Irish soil, there have been a number of significant victories that have been achieved in production category cars and the 1991 Irish Tarmac Championship is amongst the most significant successes. Banbridge driver Kenny McKinstry had started the season with his eye on the Group N crown. Driving his Ford Sierra Cosworth, McKinstry and navigator Robbie Philpott enjoyed a scintillating start to their season and by the finish of round three, not only did they lead the Group N category but they also topped the overall championship tables. After another two events,
McKinstry had managed to seal the production category title, so he decided to switch to a Group A Cosworth for the final two rallies in Cork and Killarney in an attempt to seal the overall crown. His season finished with an overall victory as well a second position, which was more than enough to seal a double title success. Group A cars and World Rally Cars have tended to dominate the Irish results sheets since the ‘90s, but now and again, opportunities have arisen for those in lesserpowered cars to soak up the limelight. In 1999, Michael Duke became the first driver to win a round of the Northern Ireland Championship in a Group N car when he sealed victory at the Tour of the Sperrins in his Mitsubishi

Lancer Evo. That’s a feat that has only been repeated on a couple of occasions since. They include Niall McShea’s success at the 2003 Lakeland Stages and Richard Cathcart’s win at the 2007 Down Rally. That victory for McShea was one of his final successes on home ground before he went on to contest the 2004 Production World Rally Championship. He followed in the footsteps of 2003 Champion Martin Rowe to seal the 2004 success, entering the history books in the process. No other British or Irish driver managed to repeat their PWRC feats.
While Irish championships have always tended to permit all classes of car, the British Rally Championship has chopped and changed its regulations over the years. Ironically, it was in the final year that the British Rally Championship (BRC) ran to the Formula 2 regulations that little known Finn, Markko Ipatti, claimed the prestigious title aboard his Group N Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 6. While SEAT, Renault and Ford had all withdrawn from the series that year, Ipatti still had some tough opposition to contend with in the form of Vauxhall’s Mark Higgins and Neil Wearden.
After Ipatti’s win, BRC regulations changed and the series permitted four-wheel-drive World Rally Cars. After a Foot and Mouth disease outbreak resulted in the cancellation of the 2001 series, it was these types of car that dominated for the ensuing four years, with Jonny Milner, David Higgins and Mark Higgins taking four titles between them.
Another change to the regulations followed in 2006. This time the World Rally Cars were outlawed in an attempt to increase competition in the series. It was time for a resurgence of the production category crews yet it was a familiar name at the top of the standings at the end of the season as Mark Higgins claimed another title, this time with a Group N Subaru Impreza.

After Higgins’ success, Guy Wilks secured two titles (2007/2008) with a production category Evo 9, and then it was time for the Irish to dominate. Keith Cronin became the first Irishman to win the British title since Billy Coleman secured the honours in 1974. Cronin won alongside navigator Greg Shinnors in 2009 with another production category Evo 9, and he managed to retain the title the following season with Barry McNulty, this time with a Group N Subaru Impreza.
In 2011, David Bogie took the title to Scotland after a scintillating season in his Evo 9. That was to be the final win for a Group N mounted pilot, as the following season the series switched to a two-wheel-drive format. Keith Cronin came back with a bang in 2012 with a Citroen DS3 R3T, winning the series for a third time. The following year, Jukka Korhonen took the title in a similar car.

depending on their engine size, weight and according to their twowheel-drive or four-wheel-drive powertrain.
Designed as a replacement for the Group A and Group N categories, Group R regulations were created in 2012. Similar to Group N, these regulations are for production based cars.
Group R regulations were designed with a ladder of progression in mind, with the R1 category acting as a stepping stone into the more powerful R2-R5 categories. But where do the old Group N cars fit into this new scheme?
There are six classes within the Group R category running from R1 to R5 as well as RGT. Some of these classes also have their own sub-categories, and vehicles are allocated to each class

Production rally car vs road car? So what are the differences between a production based rally car over its road car counterpart? Different regulations have permitted various enhancements to rally cars over the years but
we’ll use the Group R regulations as a basis to explain some of the differences... R1: Must use standard engines and transmissions. There are three ‘sub-categories’, R1A (up to 1400cc, minimum weight 980kg), R1B (1400-1600cc, minimum weight 1030kg) and R1T (1400cc turbocharged). All cars are two-wheeldrive. R2: This class can be split into R2B and R2C. Both classes are for naturally aspirated cars, with
R2B catering for 1400-1600cc vehicles, while R2C caters for 1600-2000cc cars. R2 cars can have more powerful engines and can use uprated suspension and transmission. Two-wheel-drive only. R3: These cars can come in two forms. If naturally aspirated, they can be between 1600-2000cc (R3C). However, the R3T class has gained ground with the manufacturers. These cars use 1600cc turbocharged engines.

Two-wheel-drive only. There is also an R3D category for up to 2000cc supercharged diesel cars. R4: For two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive cars originally homologated to the old Group N regulations. R5: 1600cc turbocharged with four-wheel-drive. RGT: GT production cars that is turbocharged or supercharged. Any capacity permitted. Two-wheeldrive only. Unfortunately, few of these cars have been homologated as they are only eligible to score points within the World Rally Championship.
For a Group R rally car to become ‘homologated’, the manufacturer must produce 2,500 road cars of the same model every year.

For example, take a 15-year-old Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 6. Although it’s now out of homologation, an Evo 6 can be capable of trading top times, particularly in forestry rallying. It may not have the same technology as the later Evos, and certainly isn’t in the same league as World Rally Cars, but a well set-up Evo 6 can still spring a few surprises. Quite a few now run larger restrictors, putting many of the original Group N cars into the more powerful classes. Some even have choice add-ons such as sequential gearboxes. That little bit of extra oomph can help put a few younger cars in their place. And in rally terms, it’s a reasonably affordable car to buy - although the expense of fixing them should something go wrong could make your eyes water!

Darren’s Double Points Delivery Double championship points at the final round of the 2013/14 winter series was enough to put the first three finishers out in front - not only on the rally podium - but championship victories in their respective classes. Darren Hutchinson was fastest on two stages in his Rage buggy, with a 7.4 second advantage at the finish. The event winner was second in the C7 championship table going into the final round, but an absent John McAndrew, aided his category win. Sean Coleman had his best RSA finish with second overall, first in C11 and winning the newlyformed championship category over David Kinloch. The JB Buggy driver was consistent over the day, with four seconds separating his counting times (five of seven to count) after the decision to use some fresh tyres. Barry Morris’ Mitsubishi Lancer was third, 11.8 seconds from second, but first in the rally car category. And maximum C8 points kept Joe Weir and his Subaru Impreza behind, both in terms of the rally and the championship spoils. Mark Graham crashed his Ford Escort Mk2 into tyres marking a chicane on the third stage, but he went home on top of the Escort pile by 5.5 seconds in fifth. Four more Escorts followed, with David Christie’s example next. Declan McNaughton was on his first event of the year, and he clipped a tyre at a chicane on the way to eighth. Eamon Doherty finished ninth, while Sean Casey (Rage) wasn’t far behind - 4.1 seconds - in tenth.
Classes... Vauxhall Corsa driver Patrick O’Brien walked away with the C1 victory by 34 points after his third maximum points score of the season. Michael Boyle had a chance of his first championship victory, six points down going into the final day, but he was absent.
to Boyle’s two. Dale Liggett was her challenge on the day, and he finished third in the championship race, behind final round absentee, Boyle. Jonny Armstrong finished eleventh overall, and first in C3 on his way to winning a championship trophy in his Vauxhall Corsa. Josh McErlean, however, had the

Dean McDowell finished second on the day, and second in the championship to leave Boyle in third, two points behind. In C2 Rebecca Kennedy claimed her first championship win, after following Declan Boyle home last season. The Vauxhall Nova driver had three maximum scores
Markethill man under pressure with 5.2 seconds deciding the class result. Suzuki Swift driver, McErlean, finished second in the championship race, ahead of Waringstown-based David Stevenson in his Vauxhall Corsa built for the season. Martin Gallagher won C4
despite not making the start of the final round because of a mechanical issue. The class win on the day went to Martin Collins’ Honda Civic by 9.3 seconds. Stephen Hunter (Peugeot 205) finished second in both the rally and class championship. Kevin Kelly’s Citroen Saxo was third in the event, while Gary Cassidy brought a Honda Civic to third in the championship. Mark Graham’s maximum points score in C5 on the final round jumped him from fifth to third in the championship race behind the winner David Christie, and second-placed, Adrian Grant, who also finished runner-up in the rally by five seconds. Declan McNaughton was fastest in C6 by 16 seconds, from Keith Stevenson’s Toyota MR2. Paddy McFadden finished third in his Talbot Sunbeam. But in the championship points it was Christopher Armstrong who won the category. Keith Stevenson was second and Gary Kiernan took third. The 2014 summer series has already got underway with round one in Portadown, and the championship will continue at Nutts Corner and Mondello Park, with an event each month from May to October. A nonchampionship event will also take place in Ballykelly on July 6. P

IRISH TARMAC CHAMPIONSHIP // PRevIew // 059
kIllARNey PRevIew
Tarmac Battle resumes in Killarney Last year’s FIA Historic Rally of the Lakes winner Wesley Patterson has abandoned his Appendix K Car to revert to his more familiar Modified machine and will also be a strong contender, as will the legendary Phil Collins who makes the trip from Herefordshire to the stages he loves so well and where he has enjoyed considerable success over the past 32 years. Killarney’s Ed Murphy comes to the event on the back of two great drives in the Dunlop National series, which have netted him a 5th overall in Birr and 9th overall in the recent Circuit of Kerry, while Roy White , who appears to have sorted the reliability problems in his Rover MG, loves the Killarney stages and has shown that he has the speed to mix it with the best that the opposition can throw at him. Launching the cartell.ie International Rally of the Lakes 2014 at The Gleneagle Hotel, Killarney on Saturday were from left, Donal Lawlor, Cartell.ie, Johnny Hickey, KDMC Pro, Ger Seaman, TROA, Dermot Healy, Clerk of the Course, Liam Cronin Deputy COC, Paul O’Neill (Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce), Cormac Casey KC Print, Paddy Courtney (Mayor of Killarney) Ger Healy, Motor Sport Ireland, Diarmuid Cronin, Killarney and District Motor Club Chairman, Cathy Healy, Event Secretary, Jeff Aherne Cartell.ie, Brian McArdle, OSI,and Patrick O’Donoghue, Gleneagle Hotel. Picture: Eamonn Keogh
With entries still open for the Cartell.ie International Rally of the Lakes over the May Bank Holiday weekend, over 90 crews have entered and the stage is already set for battle royal in all classes and categories of the 35th Rally of the Lakes. Heading the international entry list is last year’s winner, Garry Jennings, who is likely to start the event in the top slot. Behind him comes the current leader of both the Tarmac and the National Championships, Declan Boyle, with two times Lakes winner Daragh O’Riordan and former winner Denis Cronin also in contention for a repeat of their earlier successes. West Cork Rally winner Donagh Kelly will be seeking his first Killarney win, while the 2012 Billy Coleman award winner, Sam Moffett, in his Fiesta WRC, will be anxious to make his mark on the International Rally scene. Local Driver Alan Ring has reverted to his Group N Subaru for this season
but he faces stiff opposition from drivers such as Josh Moffett (Evo) and former National Group N Champion Colm Murphy. Making a welcome return to the rally scene is Aaron McHale, who will be seeking to continue in the winning ways which made his father, Austin, a multiple Tarmac Rally Champion. In the National Rally all the big Escort brigade come out to play but perhaps the person who will cause them most bother is the flying milkman from Donegal, Declan Gallagher, who put in such an incredible drive over many of these same stages to take the overall win in the Modified section of the 2013 Rentokill Killarney Historic Rally last December, on his first ever event in Killarney. Declan went on to
repeat the category win in the West Cork Rally and will be anxious to consolidate his claim to the top spot in the Modified Challenge of the Clonakilty Black Pudding Tarmac Championship. Others well in contention in the National section include local crews Barry Meade who has returned to rallying after a year of competitive cycling, Fergus O’Meara who won the National Section last and Billy Coleman award finalist Rob Duggan in his incredibly quick Honda Civic.
The FIA Historic Rally will run ahead of the International rally and will be headed by Millstreet’s Mark Falvey, the start to finish winner of the Rentokill Historic Rally last December and also of the Historic section of the 2013 Cork 20 International Mark’s opposition will be provided by crews from the UK, Isle of Man, Italy, Sweden, Finland and Spain in Appendix K cars which include Ford, Lancia, Triumph, Porsche, Vauxhall and BMW. A strong Junior Entry has already been received and these will join the rally for all of the second leg of the rally on Sunday The event gets under way with a ceremonial in Killarney town centre on Friday evening with competitive motoring kicking off on the Saturday morning.

ouffier led the rally initially, but got a puncture on stage 2, losing over a quarter of a minute to the ultimate winner. It was Breen’s Peugeot Academy teammate, Kevin Abbring, in front before a water leak led to over-heating and damage to his engine, giving Breen the lead he kept to the finish. In third was the Fiesta R5 of Kajetan Kajentanowicz, the R5 and RRC turbo cars spectacularly outpacing normally aspirated S2000 cars which took fourth through to twelth positions. Esapekka Lappi’s Skoda was the top placed of these cars, ahead of Bruno Magalhaes in an eight-year-old Peugeot and 19-year-old Russian driver Vasiliy Gryazin in a Fiesta S2000.
Problems struck Lappi’s team-mate Sepp Wiegand who missed stages on day one with suspension damage, while Jaroslav Orsak cheekily broke the rule which banned asphalt tyres on the down town spectator stage on day two – accepted a penalty and promptly won
the stage. Punctures delayed Lappi and Gryazin, Kajetanowicz had power steering problems which enforced a delay while he re-set the car’s electronics. Winner of the ERC two-wheel-drive category was Russian driver Evgeny Sukhovenko in a Renault Clio R3 and the production category was taken by Hungarian Erdi Tibor in a Mitsubishi. The Acropolis was run asa round of the ERC for the first time since 1968. This year’s event was run over two days, and earlier in the year than before. It was based at Loutraki, close to Corinth, and it was run over asphalt stages on the first day and gravel on the second day. The asphalt stages completely changed the character of the rally. The Acropolis, which had for years been the slowest event in the world championship, suddenly became extremely fast, with the asphalt stages being won at speeds up to an average of 125kph. Neither Peugeot nor the FIA however explained the recent protracted uncertainties concerning the delay in homologation for the Peugeot and Citroen R5 cars, but the national Italian driver Paulo Andreucci has been quoted in saying the FIA demanded late changes to the pop-off valve.

Harryman’s Thoughts... It was a great moment on that Sunday afternoon just a couple of weeks ago as I stood in Loutraki, Greece, and watched alongside thousands of other rally fans as a young Irishman and an Englishman - both of whom I can call friends and colleagues - take the spoils with a debut ERC rally win for their new car, the Peugeot 208 T16. 2nd: Bryan BOUFFIEr/ XavIEr PanSErI
The rally was a personal success for 2011 Academy and 2012 SWRC world champion Breen and his codriver Scott Martin. For both men it was their first major overall rally win. Most of Martin’s professional career was alongside Mathew Wilson with whom he gained considerable WRC experience, while last year he co-drove for Khalid Al Qassimi in the Abu Dhabi team, before joining Breen
There were smiles, a few tears and champagne all around. And as the wind changed direction at a critical moment on the podium, there was a taste for me!

for test work at Peugeot at the end of last year. Breen was overwhelmed by it all. “We came to Greece with very little pre-event testing with the 208T16 on gravel. To begin with I found the car was quite tricky to drive as the rear of the car was moving around a lot and the brakes were getting weak, but we did it - winners of the Acropolis
Rally 2014. An incredible feeling”. For Breen there was a personal factor behind it all. The last time an Irish driver won an ERC rally was when the late Frank Meagher won the Manx Rally in 1995. Meagher had been the boyhood inspiration which set Breen on his rallying career path. P

Peugeot, with its new 208 T16 R5, driven by Craig Breen and Scott Martin, along with teammates Kevin Abbring and Seb Marshall, showed rally fans and hopefully the motorsport world in general that technology and youth are once again prime movers in rallying, which is a much closer road car relative than Formula 1. Rallying, I am thankful to say, has once again become an integral part of several mainstream car manufacturers’ advertising philosophies. Along with the World Rally Championship involvement from the Volkswagen Group, including Skoda in the ERC, Citroen with the backing of Abu Dhabi, Hyundai supported by oil giant Shell, and Msport with the blessing of Ford, plus five tyre manufacturers, it all bodes well for the future of the sport that I was brought up in and encapsulates most of my life. Of course, at the Acropolis, there might well have been a totally different outcome had Kevin Abbring and Seb Marshall not encountered radiator failure during the first day. But the history books will show that the 2014 ‘Rally of the Gods’ - which is renowned as the toughest of all rallies - was won by a young Irishman for the first time ever. By the time you read this, the Circuit of Ireland will have been and gone. Did that same Irishman manage to claim another victory in his French car on home ground? Let’s hope so! P

winner: Owen Murphy/JaMes O’Brien
The second round of the 2014 Valvoline National Forest Rally Championship took place in Ballyvourney. A crisp dry morning greeted the 58 strong field as they embarked on the completely new format at the Moonraker rally. The Munster Car Club hosted event featured six stages (three repeated) on the Cork/ Kerry county bounds in the Mullaghanish Mountain landscape. Andrew Purcell/John Rafter (Evo 6) set the pace on the short opening stage Gleanndave, six

seconds faster than top seeds Owen Murphy/ James O’Brien (Evo 9) who tied with round one winners Desi Henry/ Liam Moynihan in their new Evo 9. One sec adrift Pat O’Connell and Mark Wiley (Evo 9) tied with Josh Moffett/ Jason McKenna (Evo 9) in fourth. Brendan Comiskey/ Ronan O’Kane held sixth a further second behind - they too had upgraded to an Evo 9.
Murphy and O’Brien were fastest on SS2 Caherdowney albeit one second up on Purcell/ Rafter, who suffered burst oil cooler pipe. Many drivers found the long 16 km stage very technical and struggled to get a rhythm, several reported brake problems due to the unrelenting terrain. Murphy/ O’Brien were fastest again on SS3, Derrenaing, where Andrew

Purcell dropped five seconds due to concerns about his engine. At service in Ballyvourney, Owen Murphy tied with Andrew Purcell for the lead with Desi Henry nine seconds back in third. Josh Moffett held fourth, Pat O’Connell fifth, Brendan Comiskey sixth with local brothers Ger/ James Lucey up to seventh despite an over-heating engine. Stage 5 (the repeat of the mammoth Caherdowney saw Owen Murphy set another FTD to hold a 12 second lead going into the final stage. Desi Henry moved into second as Purcell dropped to third, having lost 14 seconds to the leaders. Moffett held fourth,

O’Connell fifth and Comiskey maintained sixth - a mere second up on Martin Cairns/ Ray Fitzpatrick, who were using their state of the art Impreza S14 WRC. Owen Murphy/ James O’Brien emerged from the final stage un-scathed to claim a 15 second victory. The Cork pair made a late, but faultless start to their 2014 championship having missed the opening round. Desi Henry and Liam Moynihan took second which
keeps them top of the Valvoline points table. Andrew Purcell and John Rafter had to settle for third because they lost time on the afternoon stages. Josh Moffett and Jason McKenna were fourth, and Pat O’Connell/ Mark Wiley completed the first five. In the battle for sixth Martin Cairns and Ray Fitzpatrick (Impreza WRC) got ahead of Comiskey and O’Kane on the final stage. Niall Henry and John Rowan finished eighth. Ger/ James Lucey (Evo 8) slipped to ninth due to over-heating and clutch problems. Monaghan crew Michael Carbin and Stephen Thornton (Evo 4) completed the first ten. Daniel O’Brien/ Mark Glennerster stalled their Ford Focus WRC on the final stage which dropped them to 11th. Daniel Cronin and Shane Buckley finished 12th on their first event in the BRC winning Evo 9. Marty McKenna/ Damien Fleming were 13th in a Mckinstry Motorsport Impreza WRC. Just behind them were Shane McGirr and Jackie Elliott. They took a start to finish 2WD victory to strengthen their resolve at the top of the Valvoline 2WD points. Runner up in the

After a three month break the 2014 Blue Scottish Tarmack Rally Championship resumed with the second round of the season – the Dunfermline Car Club Ingliston Stages at The Royal Highland Showground, near Edinburgh. An accident on stage seven resulted in the stage being delayed, before the decision was made to cancel stages seven and eight, leaving the results standing as they were after the first six stages. Bruce Edwards and Ashleigh Morris took the win in the Darrian, finishing 45 seconds ahead of Stuart Baillie and Scott Bathgate. Edwards said, “I was delighted with how the car went. The stages were very varied, as was the grip but we seemed to have the

WOOLBRIDGE MOTOR CLUB
Rod Thorne attacks the Manor Farm (Charmouth) hillclimb course in his five litre Rover V8-powered Pilbeam MP43.
The Woolbridge Motor Club is based in and around Dorset and it was formed in 1960 by employees of the Atomic Energy Establishment at Winfrith, and the Army Gunnery School at Lulworth. An ancient bridge in the village of Wool, midway between these two establishments, gave the club its name, and is featured in the club’s badge.
promoted road rallies, then autocross, and speed hillclimbs from the late 1970s. They are now one of the largest clubs in the South of England with around 500 members. A number of the events organised by the Woolbridge Motor Club are qualifying rounds for regional or national championships. This in itself is an indication of the high standard and the popularity of the events. But being a member of a flourishing motor club with a large number of members does not necessarily mean you have to compete. There are always opportunities to get close to the action either as a marshal or as an official. Whatever your age or background there are experienced members to advise and help.

rallies, where the ability of someone on the maps outweighs other considerations. We also have a thriving fourwheel-drive and sporting car sections of the club, which put on several events which are a more severe form of production car trials to fully test the off road capabilities of their vehicles. In addition to our own events we provide marshals to help run other events, including a round of the national stage rally championship, and a section of the MCC Classic Exeter Trial each year.
There is also an active social calendar, involving a number of skittle matches and quiz evenings with other motor clubs and motoring bodies, film/ video shows, treasure hunts, and an annual dinner dance and awards presentation evening in December. In addition a monthly club magazine is published and posted to members. The club meets at the Colliton Club, Colliton Park, Dorchester, Dorset on the third Wednesday of each month. P

The club currently runs speed hillclimbs at two venues - Wiscombe in Devon and Charmouth in Dorset - and a classic trial. However other events are run in which everyday road going vehicles can be used. These comprise of production car trials (attempting to drive up grass or mud slopes), autotests (driving a set course around maker cones against the clock, both on tarmac and on grass), and evening navigation
