Jim Clark tragedy

tragic... Welcome to another edition of PN, unfortunately, not a great month for our sport... A tragic accident on the recent Jim Clark rally, resulted in three spectators being killed. This is terrible for our sport, which by nature is dangerous, but this is also the great attraction. My heart goes out to young David and Ray, I do hope they know that our sporting family understands and is fully supportive of them after this accident. It is however, a timely reminder that if you attend a rally in any capacity, remember these 3 words... EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED. Stay safe on the stages! editor@pacenotes.net

An incident involving an Irish crew at the Jim Clark Rally seen three people die. The car left the road, and testament to the safety and structure of the car both the driver and co-driver did not suffer any serious physical injury. The MSA are cooperating with the Police Scotland. A statement reads as follows, “Following the tragic events of the Jim Clark Rally, the Motor Sports Association is cooperating with an investigation by Police Scotland. There will also be a full investigation by the governing body to ensure that any lessons are learned to assist in the constant drive to provide the highest possible safety standards at all motor sport events. ‘The families and friends of those who have lost their lives and of those who have been injured are in all our thoughts as they face such an awful situation,’ said Rob Jones, MSA Chief Executive. The MSA welcomes the announcement by the Scottish

Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill MSP that the Scottish Government will commission a review of motor sport safety in Scotland. This will be carried out by a working group comprising the MSA and other key stakeholders such as Police Scotland, Scottish Borders Council and the Scottish Auto Cycle Union. Sir Jackie Stewart will also be a member. The MSA’s over-riding concern as the governing body of UK motor sport has always been the safety of participants, whether competitors, organisers or spectators.” Everyone here at Pacenotes, is thinking about the crew, the victims and all related family members and friends.

Buckinghamshire-based young people’s charity SKIDZ

is to benefit from funds raised at a 50th anniversary celebration of Patron Paddy Hopkirk’s 1964 Monte Carlo Rally victory. Featuring a cavalcade of Minis, which travelled from Stormont to the Titanic Slipway, and the auction of a specially

commissioned Art Mini featuring the work of artist Niall Shawcross, the day concluded with a gala. As a result £55,000 was raised. The money will be split between SKIDZ, which provides motor vehicle study courses for disadvantaged young people, and those at risk of becoming NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training), and the Integrated

Education Fund of Northern Ireland. Paddy received the donation on behalf of SKIDZ where he joined Baroness May Blood, chair of the Integrated Education Fund. Poignantly, Patricia McConnell, the widow of Graham McConnell, also attended the presentation. Her late husband built the 33EJB Mini replica car which was used in the build up to the gala and was driven by Paddy in the cavalcade from Stormont to City Hall. Sadly, Graham died shortly before the event took place. The Mini is now being hired out to raise money for charity. rally GB’s Spectator Priority Plans for the 2014 edition of Wales Rally GB centre on building on the enthusiastic fan reaction to the 2013 event, and in particular learning from experiences in 2013 when unexpectedly higher spectator attendances were recorded. Ticket strategies have been improved as have spectator traffic management. With the recent change in top management of the event there are major route changes. Main sporting changes this year are that special stages will only be held on Friday through to Sunday (no more Thursday evening stages). The

route is more compact (it no longer goes as far south as the popular Myherin stage in midWales) and the rally will not use Great Orme. The ceremonial start will be at Colwyn Bay and there will be two night stages on the Saturday evening. The total stage route is close to minimum championship regulation and with as many as 23 stages the average stage length is shorter than average for a world championship rally. Rally headquarters and the service park are again at Deeside close to Chester.

Modern tyre Services renews sponsorship with Alastair Fisher

Enniskillen based Modern

Tyres has renewed its sponsorship of one of the Northern Ireland’s most promising rally drivers, Alastair Fisher. The name Fisher is synonymous with rallying and Alastair has been making a name for himself on the world rally stage. This year, Alastair is back competing with the world’s fastest young guns in the Junior WRC and already has proven what a talent he is.

The new look and branding on Alastair’s rally car is just one of the many new initiatives to come from Modern Tyres, explained Group Marketing Manager Stephen Shaw (pictured). “We are delighted to again be sponsoring Alastair Fisher in the 2014 Junior World Rally Championship,” said Stephen, “And with new branding, new look and new offers coming from Modern Tyres this year, the company, along with Alastair, are going to be leading from the front.

Dan Jones MD of 3J Driveline explains: “Following a number of requests for Focus fitment LSD’s we decided they should become a priority. However, as with all our designs, we won’t just re-engineer a straight replacement. Fitments that make it into our range undergo a thorough engineering investigation that looks for ways to deliver an enhanced and supreme product. Working with a vehicle specialist through development aids us in delivering a product that addresses common complaints, so when Jam-Sport approached us in regard to Focus LSD’s they seemed the obvious choice as

Rally, once again backed by Orchard Motorsport and taking place on Saturday June 28, has attracted an over-subscribed entry. First entry in was from 11 times winner Kenny McKinstry, often dubbed King of the Park. Top drivers who have now committed to the event include last years winner Garry Jennings, current Irish Tarmac Champion Declan Boyle and reigning NI Champion Derek McGarrity. Also in the mix for overall honours are Kevin Barrett, Derek McGeehan, Paddy McVeigh, Emma McKinstry, James Gillen, Jonny Leonard and Gareth Sayers. Last years Group N winner Mark Massey is back again for a battle with Pat O’Connell and Marc Johnston. Leading the Ford Escort Mk

II Challenge pack is last years winner Wesley Patterson, but he’ll have a fight from Frank Kelly, Adrian Hetherington, Martin Teggart, Viv Hamill and James Kennedy. Others worth watching out for are Keith White and Shane McGirr, while historic entries include Raymond Johnston, Drew Wylie, Ian Millar and Stephen Mawhinney. The format of the rally is very similar to last year, with 8 stages throughout the day, starting just after 10.00 am and finishing at 4.30pm, with the start, finish and all the action within the confines of the park. One of the major factors to the success of Lurgan Park over the years is that the organising North Armagh Club has restricted the entry to around 50 selected competing cars so as to provide non-stop high quality action.

WRC SARDINIA RALLY WRAP-UP WORDS & IMAGES :: MARTIN HOLMES

The Italian world championship rally has a history of not being straightforward and traditions in that country die hard! Everything which elsewhere would be normal turns out to be a “Casino”. Measured planning is unknown south of

the Alps. Once again Sardinia made us hold our breath. Right from the start the annual argument about which island (Sardinia or Sicily) would host the event went on, even whether there should be a ceremonial start on the mainland in nearby Rome. It was all to do with budgets which come and go, and political elections, as usual. Despite all the threats and rumours it went back to Sardinia again for the tenth time, but this time on condition there was an enormous diversion so that the start and an opening superspecial stage could be held at the island’s capital Cagliari some 250km to the south of the event’s headquarters in Alghero. Even if it gave excitement to the genuinely local people with reportedly 35,000 spectators attending, it was one factor which could be done without especially as the superspecial had to be stopped after only 30 of the cars passed before crowd control trouble intervened.

Lack of information...

Serious questions are sure to be asked about the decision to run the much-vaunted 59km stage in

the view of the confusions these stages created in the results system of the rally. The FIA may think that longer stages offer a return to the durability nature of earlier days, but wider issues need to be considered. On both occasions the stages were interrupted because of problems (on stage 11, because of a crash by Al Rajhi) and then on stage 13 (because of the fire of Dettori). Problems cropped up faster than the organisers could handle them because of poor local telephone and internet connectivity in the region of the stages. The organisers suffered from a lack of information when making corrections to the stage times. Drivers were provisionally given interruption times when later it was discovered they were not entitled to this and there were disputes about whether competitors actually saw yellow flags. The FIA is already addressing the problems about yellow flagging competitors when the stage is going to be interrupted, experimenting with flashing warning lights inside the rally car. In the end the organisers did not address the request of Nasser Al Attiyah to amend his time because the dust obstruction caused by Neuville on stage 5. All this left both Sousa and Protasov feeling

rejected. Nasser then retired so we will never know if he had wrongly lost the lead through Friday afternoon in the category.

French R5 illegalities...

To be fair not all the tensions were created by the event’s format. The sense of anticipation extended beyond the final stage, in fact well into the evening, and did not only focus on the world championship challengers. Attention this time was on the two French Citroen and Peugeot R5 cars, which had appeared on a WRC event for the first time. FIA officials always target important new cars when they first appear on the WRC scene. In this case they were curious how these cars managed to handle their widely rumoured engine compartment cooling problems, on what is sure to be the hottest rally of the season. Eight hours after the finish the official notice board announced that there had been illegalities in the water radiators both on the DS3 and on the 208T16. Both drivers had been penalised, but not in a meaningful way which affected the results, but with money. Sebastien Chardonnet and Karl Kruuda were each fined 3,000 euros, but escaped other

recriminations. This really did not look a very edifying solution, even if the technical discrepancies were measured in millimetres. In a world of engineering precisions and high technologies, we have come to know that something is either right or wrong, especially in issues so fundamental as the design of the cars. A money penalty did not give guidance to the users of these cars or to the company which produced them. The suggestions of being able to buy off illegalities left a bad taste in the mouth.

Clouds of suspicion...

In one way the infringement was marginal, but the steward’s decision report also related to problems of “last minute availability of components” which was enlightening. These cars, which were developed side-by-side by the same engineers, have been around in one form or another for a year, but the teams explained they did not have time to check how legal the products were which they had to install. This episode concerned not only the stories about the problems in development, which had been reported both before and after official

homologation, but to the whole Citroen and Peugeot marketing operation. It was a shame for the drivers. Officially supported driver Sebastien Chardonnet had waited almost half a year for his Citroen Top Driver prize drive programme to start, and he drove a great event which was his first in a four-wheel-drive car. Private team driver Karl Kruuda had survived three days of intense competition. The two cars finally brought opposition to the all-conquering Fiesta R5 cars, and they went home in clouds of suspicion.

A question of strength?...

Interesting to record that both the Citroen and the Peugeot R5 cars finished the event ahead of the Fiesta R5 cars but it is important to remember that at WRC level most Ford WRC2 drivers prefer to run with the older RRC rather the newer R5 cars, and this tells another story. The low initial cost of the R5 cars has brought about suggestions that the price capping of the R5 regulations means the cars are not as strong, and maybe the rugged roads of the WRC may not be the ideal place for R5 cars.

If this is the experience of Fiesta R5 drivers this problem will continue for the Citroen and Peugeot drivers. There is already a feeling that the worry of French R5 car users has not ended now that the cars are visible in the world rally championship. Maybe the problems are really only beginning. Not a comforting thought for the hopeful purchasers who have already been waiting many months for delivery of their cars - and often still with no confidence when their cars will eventually arrive. So, was it wise that the FIA should kill off the development of RRC cars (homologations have been stopped for some time) so as to speed up the progress of the R5 project? Maybe the R5 cars are not the cheap-fix solution for WRC competition that the FIA had originally promised? Cheap fix? Nothing about world championship competition is cheap fix, silly of anyone to think that it would be! Two thosand euro fines seems to be the beginning of the end of the illusion.

Hello Pacenotes Magazine

I have a problem! Guest Column

Like millions of people across the world I have the rally bug, and around January every year I try to work out a number of things in no particular order.

1) How much of a budget do we really have? 2) How much will it cost to run the car this year? 3) What championship (if any) should I do?

Now the lovely folk at Pacenotes have asked me to write this piece because they think I can do it in a lighthearted way and also I guess due to the fact that I have flirted with both the British Rally Championship (all be it in the Challenge guise) and the BTRDA gravel series for almost 15 years. I will come back to the pros and cons of each shortly. I feel I should address the first three points that keep your average rally addict awake at night first. Budget - there is a very simple formula to work to here. Wages less monthly bills plus any support you can muster, plus co-drivers contribution equals your seasons rally budget. If it doesn’t then there is a fair chance you will end up either homeless, single, hungry, living in the rally car and selling the Big Issue or all of these. So you have to try and be as honest as possible with yourself or a financial meltdown equal to that the banks suffered in 2008 will occur. And no government, family or partner will be able to save you! The next thing is the cost for running the car outside of your on event costs gearbox, damper rebuilds and general maintenance. Again be honest, as it’s false economy not to do all the hard work of making the car work and reliable during the down times between events. Once you have calculated all of the above figers into one unmanageable amount…. forget it. If we worked to life’s financial logic 80%

pacenotes JUly 2014

and tarmac events makes it a complete championship and a full challenge for driver, co-driver, car and team. What I mean by that statement is that the events are always based in the

TONY SIMPSON

of people rallying wouldn’t compete! Just don’t remortage your house or take out a bank loan to enter events or championships. It is never worth it. Trust me! This brings us neatly to what championship to do if you’re a Liverpool based 39-year-old writer, comedian and company director. I confess I love the events in the BRC. They are the iconic events I watched as a kid growing up telling anyone who would listen that I would do them one day. The BTRDA forest championship is a different animal in many ways. For me it’s always been either the BRC or the BTRDA forest championship. The seduction of the BRC events and preamble foreplay of each round seems to equally turn people on and off the championship. The city centre starts and press days are easy targets for the self-funding driver to complain about. Those who are lucky enough to have some form of commercial sponsor or partner though, it definitely becomes a selling point. Rarely would it ever increase sales of a product granted, but product awareness and the chance to give out some free material, get some pictures with crowds around cars and photo opportunities, so yes it all works a treat. The mix of gravel

The BTRDA forest championship always happens! same places. You can book the same hotels, eat in the same restaurants and nothing changes. This is far from a criticism. It is very much a celebration of the events and the championship. You will be hard pushed to think of a time if there was ever a doubt a BTRDA forest event will run. The fact that the championship caters from a 1 litre Micra through to a current specification WRC is strength of BTRDA and their championship rounds that they have on offer. No one is turned away, and every car has a home if they want to go out compete and have some fun. I was asked to write this piece to compare the two options. The truth is I can’t while the BRC can sometimes feel like a fine dining experience that can occasionally feel like one or two courses too many. The BTRDA schedule of scrutineering late on a Friday evening, rally on a Saturday, finish in the afternoon and home in the evening can feel more like fast food than a fine dining experience. Current world champions Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia surged to victory in Rally Italia Sardegna, the sixth round of the World Rally Championship in a VW Polo R. It represents the pair’s fourth win of the season and their 20th world rally victory to give them a 33-point championship advantage.

traced to a faulty sensor and while he dropped some time he retained the lead at the mid-day service. The afternoon though belonged to Ogier - the Frenchman won both stages and took the lead, while Latvala was forced to stop in the Polo R WRC.

Rally Italia Sardegna got underway on the Thursday when the crews headed south to Cagliari for a short street stage based in the city. In front of thousands of spectators Mikko Hirvonen set the pace to hold an initial lead in his Ford WRC.

Splitting the two Volkswagens was Mads Østberg. He and Andreas Mikkelsen had been fighting hard for third, and while Østberg took time out of his fellow Norwegian, Mikkelsen then lost time on the last two stages of the day with a broken damper. Overnight they were split by 36.3 seconds with just over forty five kilometres to come on Sunday.

Andersson recorded their best result of the season with second in the Total Abu Dhabi World Rally Team Citroën DS3. Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila were lucky to claim the final podium position in the VW Polo R WRC.

A dramatic opening day of the event saw Jari-Matti Latvala head the leaderboard that saw many of the leading crews hit trouble. The Finn overcame the tricky conditions to climb from 10th to head the field. Volkswagen team-mate Sébastien Ogier had been equally impressive, despite running first on the road and calling for qualifying to make a return, held ninth after the first stage. But the Frenchman climbed to second after both he and Latvala were catapulted up the leaderboard when the leading crews hit problems on SS5. Mads Østberg rounded off the top three for Citroën and the trio were split by just over 30 seconds. Mikko Hirvonen hit the headlines earlier in the day though when, after SS2 and while in third position, his Fiesta RS WRC caught fire on the road section - delaying the rally by over an hour. On SS5, however, the rally turned on its head when disaster pacenotes JULY 2014

struck the Hyundai i20 WRCs of both Thierry Neuville and Juho Hänninen, who were holding first and second respectively. Neuville stopped with a mechanical problem and the Finn escaped a dramatic roll, caused by missing a slight dip in the road on the recce, elevating Latvala from sixth to first and Ogier from eighth to sixth. In the same stage Citroën’s Kris Meeke retired with a batteryrelated problem. The afternoon saw the Volkswagen duo win each of the repeated stages to claim a provisional one-two for the team. Østberg had a steady run to third, dropping one position in the final stage when the wipers failed and he was unable to clean the screen as the sun began to set. With battles raging throughout the leaderboard, Andreas Mikkelsen was just four seconds adrift in fourth and Robert Kubica was a very fine fifth. His new approach payed dividends. He continued with his regular rally battle with Elfyn Evans. Martin

Prokop was seventh. The Czech driver had set some impressive times and ran as high as third overall. WRC returnee Henning Solberg was eighth and the level of problems and retirements saw WRC 2 competitors Yazeed AlRajhi and Nasser Al-Attiyah sit inside the top 10 in their Regional Rally Cars. Hayden Paddon, on his debut outing with Hyundai Motorsport, was 11th. The New Zealander suffered some gearbox problems, but largely running at his own pace as he learns the i20 WRC. Saturday saw the crews tackle two stages repeated twice, but with two runs through the massive 59.13 kilometre Monte Lerno stage it was set to be a tough day in scorching temperatures. The morning saw Latvala once again set the pace, extending his lead to nearly 30 seconds with fastest time on SS10. In the following stage the Finn had to switch to road mode, fearing an over-heating problem, but ultimately the problem was

Robert Kubica had been setting a great pace but the Pole took a wheel off on stage 12 while holding fifth position, elevating Elfyn Evans up the leaderboard. The Welshman had more than a minute in hand to sixth-placed Martin Prokop and Henning Solberg was seventh ahead of Kubica and Khalid Al Qassimi. Nasser Al-Attiyah, who had been tenth, went off the road on the final stage and Hyundai newcomer Hayden Paddon also stopped during the final stage with an engine problem. A mistake by Jari-Matti Latvala on the final stage of the day then dropped the Finn from a possible victory to third overall, handing the advantage back to reigning world champion and team-mate Sébastien Ogier. On the longest stage of this year’s World Rally Championship (59.13 km) Latvala hit a rock and was forced to stop

and change the damaged wheel, costing him over two minutes and setting up Ogier to perhaps take victory. The final day would see four stages, including the Power Stage for the crews to contest and bring the event to an end, but is was Østberg who took the advantage on the first stage, extending his advantage over Latvala into the bargain. The Finn fought back on the following two stages, but simply ran out of kilometres to fight for second. With Østberg ensuring second place for the Total Abu Dhabi World Rally Team it was left to Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia to take the win in Italy. Behind the leading trio, Andreas Mikkelsen finished fourth for the third consecutive event and claimed his first Power Stage victory ahead of both his 4Th: andreas MikkeLsen/OLa FLOene

team-mates. Elfyn Evans had another solid rally and finished fifth ahead of Martin Prokop, who has been suffering back problems throughout the rally. Henning Solberg and Robert Kubica rounded off the top eight and local hero Lorenzo Bertelli finished ninth and took the FIA WRC 2 victory - his first win. At the finish it was a relaxed Ogier who said, “It’s not been an easy weekend for me. We pushed to the maximum during two days. The first one was really frustrating. Even though we were pushing we were losing time and at the mid-day on Friday I was quite disappointed and I was thinking maybe this weekend I would fight for a podium and maybe not. But I really did my best this weekend, except maybe, the last 45 kilometres when I relaxed a little bit more and enjoyed the side view in Sardinia.”

Østberg too was content with his weekend’s effort and said at

the finish, “I was not so confident after Argentina. Obviously with no testing after that and just staying at home trying to fix my thumb. It was nice to get back into the car, but I was not really comfortable straight away. It was a good weekend to build the confidence and get back on the pace. We have seen when we pushed the pace is good and I’m happy with that, and all the hard work the team put in.” It had been a mixed event for Latvala, but to claim a podium was still a good result. He said, “In the Power Stage it was a perfect drive. I couldn’t improve, not really at all, but I’m still happy to get two points because all the points we can get in the fight with Seb are really important. Overall it has been a good event speed wise - which we can take for Poland which is good.” P

Lorenzo Bertelli scored

his first WRC 2 win at his home event in Italy to take the championship lead. The 26-year-old drove his Ford Fiesta RRC to victory by two minutes 11.6 seconds at Rally Italia Sardegna. Second was reigning WRC3 champion Sebastien Chardonnet, with Yuri Protasov taking third. WRC2 was an exciting affair. The gravel roads on the Mediterranean island caused problems for many and there were five different leaders over the four days of the event. Protasov led initially before Nasser Al-Attiyah, winner of the previous two rallies, took charge. Karl Kruuda, debuting Peugeot’s 208 T16 in WRC2, briefly held sway before Saudi Arabian Yazeed Al Rajhi ended Friday’s leg on top when Kruuda stopped in the final stage. Al Rajhi rolled out on the Saturday to allow Al-Attiyah back in front, but the Qatari then crashed on the same bend during the second pass. It allowed Bertelli go in front, having recovered from a puncture and a small crash on the Friday that dropped him to ninth. Juan Carlos Alonso won the Production Cup class within WRC2, the Argentine’s Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X finishing three minute 13.3 seconds ahead of Ramon Torres’ similar car. Max Rendina retains the series lead.

Furzeland’s Fast CAR-nival Organiser: Sutton and Cheam MC, Farnborough and District MC. When: June 8th. Where: Abingdon Airfield, Oxfordshire. Championships: ACSMC, ASWMC Sealed Surface. Starters: 100 Stages: 8

Steve and Yvonne Furzeland

ended a five year long drought to win the recent Abingdon CAR-nival Stages in their Subaru Impreza S12 WRC. A trouble free time for the pair over the eight stages that made up the event saw them come home winners just over thirty seconds ahead of the rapid Ford Escort MkII of Paul King and Alicia Miles. Third overall was the similar Ford Escort MkII of Josh Payton and Marcus Mizen. Over the opening stages Furzeland opened out a gap of nearly a minute, which later in the day allowed them to pace themselves for the rest of the event without having to take any major risks. Bright sunshine and a dry surface allowed him to put seventeen seconds between himself and his nearest challenger, Paul Diamond and Steve Cox in

their Ford Escort MkII. They in turn were being pushed hard by Paul King and Gary Whittington, in a similar car and the Darrian T9 of Chris Simmons and Andy Moss. Early retirements at this stage included Dean Whittington and Dan Smith in the Sunbeam as well as Robert Dillon and Peter Weston in a Honda Civic. Stage three saw King survive a bent wheel when the car hit a pothole, and minimal loss of time, while Josh Payton collided with a chicane, but held his position. The event lost one potential winner when the Subaru Impreza of Johnnie Ellis and Dave Green

retired after stage four with turbo problems. The afternoon stages were reversed and Furzeland continued to lead the event, but the rally had now lost Peter Egerton and Freddy Larbey in the Hyundai Accent WRC, as well as the Mitsubishi Evo V of Chris Marshall and Mike Quinn. The only issue for Furzeland however was a near miss of sorts on the fifth stage with the Ford Escort Cosworth of Dick Mauger and Steve McNulty, but the time loss was small. Geoff Bennett and Mike Stewart had driven consistently all day, and by the afternoon had been rewarded with fifth place, just ahead of another improving crew, Graeme Bell and Russ Radford both pairs Ford Escort mounted. King set the fastest time on the last stage of the day to further strengthen his hold on second place behind the Furzelands, while Josh Payton drove well to take third. Despite ominous noises

emanating from the differential in their Ford Escort on the last stage, Paul Diamond and Steve Cox took fourth, with the similar car of Geoff Bennett and Mike Stewart taking fifth. Sadly the glorious sounding Rover SD1 of Ken Powell and Richard Wise retired towards the end of the event with over-heating issues. P

Dave Willett and John Davies took victory in a Ford Escort MkII on the Apex Motor Parts Welsh Marches Mini Epynt Stages - nearly a minute ahead of the Mitsubishi Evo 9 of Rob Tout and Dan Holley. The Ford Escort of Ian Caddy and Alan Thomas was third.

WinnerS: DAve Willett/JOHn DAvieS

Running new suspension for the Herefordshire Motor Club event, Willet settled in very quickly and he was untroubled for most of the day, bar some minor alternator issues and a trip to a ditch on his fourth Epynt visit. Rob Tout and Dan Holley hovered around the top four all day in a Mitsubishi Evo 9. The pair were happy with their tyre choice and suspension settings, and a troublefree day saw them take the runnerpacenotes JULY 2014

up spot after ten competitive stages. Consistent times through the day saw Ian Caddy and Alan Thomas bring their Ford Escort MkII into the final podium place, after a final burst of speed in the afternoon. The Darrian battle was thwarted when Andy Frazer and Kenny Owen’s V6T9 developed a misfire on the opening stage and coupled with over-heating issues there was a forced retirement. Ray Horton and Paul Williams were not eligible for an overall position due to event regulations, however, the T9 crew were second on the time sheets, but could only be credited with first in class. So Jeremy Straker/Simon May stepped up to the T9 challenge finishing fourth overall following a solid event, winning Class 3 into the bargain. Early retirements saw Mark Ellis and John Morgan out after hitting a rock on stage 1. Kevin Davies and Nathan Davies had mechanical woes on their Evo 9. An incident on the penultimate stage robbed Ian Godney/Mike Jenkins of a strong result in their Renault Clio while they were lying in fifth. Meanwhile a total loss of gears after stage 6 side-lined Sean Crowley and Emma Jones’ Peugeot 205 while holding sixth place, leaving Ieuan

Evans/Arfon Grittiths to take Class 3A spoils in their Escort. Kenny and Alan Brown would win class 4 in the BMW Compact and finished a respectable ninth overall. Vauxhall Nova crew Sam Davies and Cliff Jones put in a storming challenge and despite driving the final stage with mole grips operating the throttle after the cable snapped, they finished a creditable 5th overall - taking a convincing 1600cc victory from the reserve entry of Stuart Bliss and Craig Simkiss, who brought a Honda Civic home twenty seven seconds behind in eighth overall. The Citroen C2R2 Max of Andrew and Dennis Turner would round out the top 10. The 1400cc class saw an early lead steadily extend during the day by Chris Powell and Jim Lewis. It was the Sunbeam crew’s first visit to Epynt. The car was only finished late on the Saturday night after having the 1000cc Imp engine replaced with a 1400 Vauxhall, so it was just reward for all the hard work even to get the car to the start. A trouble free day and increasing pace rewarded the pair with twenty first overall and a class win of over a minute. Best Novice Crew were Lloyd Morgan and Dale Bowen (Nissan Micra). On their first visit to the

Epynt ranges saw Alex Cannon/Alan Carfrae rewarded with Best Epynt Virgin Crew in an Impreza. Best Mixed/Female award went to the Peugeot 205 team of Paul Boxhall and Teresa Butler. Competing on their first rally in a newly build MkII Escort nephew and uncle team of William and John Green had a thoroughly enjoyable day. The pair built on their confidence with a finish the only criteria for the day. The Best Herefordshire Motor Club crew was an added bonus. P

Cavan clean up for Maguire After nine stages it was Niall Maguire and Conor Foley who took a clear win at the Cavan Stages Rally - a round of the Sligo Pallets Border Rally Championship. The winners were followed by event local driver Rodney Wilton and Conor McMahon, in an Escort MkII. Third overall, and leading Group N runners were Lancer crew Trevor Bustard and John McCafferty. It was Maguire’s sixth victory on the event, and he matches the record held by Armagh man Andrew Nesbitt. Clerk of the course Stephen Kellett was back again for this year, and he laid on a compact and demanding route that featured nine stages. With the conditions being less than favourable it left tyre choice for most crews very difficult and conditions in the Bunnoe, Kill and Shankhill areas hard to judge. The start line of the first stage saw the first major retirement, when the Mitsubishi of Aaron Machale and Paddy Robinson broke a drive-shaft off the line, and the rally was over for them. Maguire set the pace with the fastest time in the Triton Showers Subaru WRC, with Stephen McCann and Paul Kelly second in a Mitsubishi Lancer, and they were followed by Michael

Carbin and Emmet McCooey in a Mitsubishi Evo 4. Fourth was the Escort of Rodney Wilton, while Trevor Bustard was fifth and leading the leading Group N man. Cavan Motor Club champion Joe Smith was a victim of the Bunnoe stage, when he slid off the road and he was out of the event. Some cars that belied the seeding they had were David Leonard and Darragh Mullen in a Mitsubishi who were sixth fastest, while Justin Smyth and Sharon Clarke took seventh on the opening stage in a Pinto-powered Ford Escort. Smyth however slid into a bale on the second stage and dropped time. Stage two saw Maguire with another fastest time to head Stephen McCann by nearly twenty five seconds.Rodney Wilton, in an Escort, was just twelve seconds back on the Mitsubishi. Fourth was the Mitsubishi Evo 9 of Trevor Bustard and John McCafferty, with

Michael Carbin now back in fifth in the Evo 4 version. The Sligo Pallets drive of the day was on the second stage, and the award was picked up by Lawrence Sherry, and with local honour at stake, the pressure was on for some, and Seamus Cooke fell victim and slid off the road and into a drain. Shankhill Cross was stage three, and it was another fastest time for Niall Maguire and Conor Foley. The Subaru WRC wasn’t missing a beat, and the lead was extended to forty seconds over Stephen McCann and Paul Kelly. Wilton was third, with Bustard still fourth ahead of Pat Kirk, who was part of the Group N battle. After service it was all eyes to the front once more as Maguire had another fastest time. Trevor Bustard overtook Rodney Wilton to hold second by just two seconds. Stephen McCann’s event ended when he hit a bank. Stephen Wright

and Karl Atkinson were in ninth, just behind local man Paddy Boyle, who had Marty Sherlock co-driving Stage five saw another fastest time for Maguire, but the battle raged for second between Wilton and Bustard with Wilton taking time back on Bustard and trying to build on the momentum to take himself into the final loop. Micky Carbin and Emmet McCooey were continuing on their quest for a top finish. Joining them in the battle were Paddy Boyle and Marty Sherlock. Marty had previously been the clerk of the course for a number of years and still holds the record of being the youngest ever COC at the tender age of 21. Into the final loop and once again the weather changed as it began to threaten rain as the crews made their way into stage seven. As it turned out, it did little to halt the charge of Maguire, as he took another fastest time, and the pair went on to win by nearly two minutes. Wilton pulled ahead of Bustard over the final few stages to hold a 44 second advantage, but not without drama. Trevor Bustard was over the moon with his third place overall as he continues his return to form after a big accident put him and brother Kenny out of action in the 2012 Sligo Stages Rally. Trevor who will now look to the Donegal International for a big home result said, “The stages were fantastic and a great challenge for man and machine and a big well done to all involved.” Rodney Wilton was another very happy man at the finish ramp outside the Kilmore. He said, “It was a tough battle all day in tough conditions.” Rodney who was the top two-wheeldrive last year went one better this year with second overall on the event in his pristine Escort on home ground. The day however belonged to Niall Maguire and Connor Foley in their Subaru Impreza WRC taking an impressive start-tofinish win. This now

puts Niall up their as the most successful driver to ever compete on the event over the years with his win tally now at six. “Better try and make it seven next year so,” was his comment at the prize giving ceremony that night. Other winners on the day were Russell Woods and Gary Gallagher who took the coveted Paddy Kiernan Memorial Cup for the fastest Class Thirteen car through stage seven on the day. The competition was unique in its layout with Paddy’s father John picking the stage on Saturday evening and sealing it in an envelope until the finish ramp when the stage number was revealed to the waiting crowd. This meant that nobody knew which stage it was going to be and kept the onus on the competitors to keep the pressure on all day and to make sure they got around.

Needless to say Russell and Gary were thrilled to win the award against very stiff opposition and will be back next year to defend it. In class 11F it was Oldcastle man Chris Snow who took the win after a hard battle all day with Darren O’Brien in their duelling Civics. O’Brien suffered at the hands of a puncture on the last loop that cost him over two minutes which dropped him back to second in the class behind Snow to complete a great return to the stages after a lengthy absents. In Class Nine it was the old master Gene Callan, with Sean Brunton, who took a well-deserved win in Noel Lappin’s Escort. After the first two stages where they were third and then second in class they took the class lead on stage three and never looked back. Second in the class were Gene McDonald and Kevin Reilly, who after an engine problem on the opener that cost them three minutes stormed back up the leader board to take a richly deserved result.

By stage three O’Callaghan in the Escort had edged in front to lead the event by nine seconds from Vivian Hamill in another Escort, who in turn was almost twenty seconds up on George Condell, who with Patrick Brides had got the Toyota Starlet into third place. David Condell had dropped time and was now fourth overall, with Gary Kieran and James Fulton now into fifth overall. Stephen and Susanne Wright had the Peugeot 208 into sixth, just twelve seconds down on Kieran, but nonetheless happy with their pace and progress on the Laois event. For them it was more practice and time in the car ahead of their visit to the Geko Ypres Rally later in the month. Once again though the conditions were tricky for all the crews with most reporting a spin, a near miss or

an overshoot. The likes of Adrian Hetherington, Rodney White in the Sunbeam and Chris Armstrong were still placed in the top ten runners. Both the Catholes and The Heath stages continued to test the crews to the limit, but O’Callaghan and Clancy stretched their lead to just over twenty seconds from Vivian Hamill and Paul Sheridan. Both crews were in Escorts. Last year’s winner George Condell meanwhile was only nine seconds down on Hamill, so at this stage the battle for runner up spot was far from over. David Condell was fourth and Gary Kieran fifth, with Wright (Peugeot 208) sixth, but he said, “Its dried up a bit now, and was a bit surprised by our times this morning, we were running rightly up, but they are a mighty pair of stages and we are really enjoying them. We are pushing on and loving every corner.” By the time the cars returned to O’Loughlins Hotel in Portlaoise Ed O’Callaghan and Ger Clancy took a well-deserved and hard fought win in the Escort from Vivian Hamill and Paul Sheridan in a similar car. George Condell and Patrick Brides brought the Toyota Starlet into third, with the Ford Escort of David Condell and Alan Kieran taking fourth. Adrian Hetherington and Gary Nolan upped the pace over the afternoon stages and took fifth, with Stephen and Susanne Wright rounding out the top six.

At the finish O’Callaghan said, “It’s a long time coming and we are delighted with the win. We were very neat and tidy this morning, and realised that we had to be careful. That second stage this morning was very tricky. It dried out somewhat this afternoon and the stages quickened up and we had a great run. Credit to the organisers because they put on a great event.’ Runner up Vivian Hamill was just as content with second. He said, “A tough rally to be honest, but a great one too. That last loop was great, and there was a great pace among a few of us. A really enjoyable event today and we are happy with second on a tough event.” Clerk of the course Sean McEvoy was happy with the way the event went and said, “It went really well, had no blockages, and we have everyone home safe, so a big thank-you to everyone who helped out today.” P

Sadness on the Jim Clark Rally…

Ireland’s Daniel McKenna and Arthur Kierans took their maiden MSA British Rally Championship victory on the 2014 Jim Clark Rally. But it was a victory without celebration after three spectators lost their lives in an incident on stage sixteen, the event immediately stopped and the remaining stages abandoned. McKenna, who won the 2013 Pirelli Star Driver competition, was driving a Citroën DS3 and he and Kierans now jointly lead the championship after two events. They are tied on 38 points with first round winners Osian Pryce and Dale Furniss from Wales, who finished second on the closed-road asphalt rally in a similar car. Also driving a Citroën, Englishman Callum Black finished third, his highest finishing position on a round of the championship. He and

James Morgan lie fifth and sixth respectively, having retired on the first round in April. Citroën UK leads the MSA British Manufacturer Teams Rally Championship with 40 points, ahead of M-Sport and Renault with 36 and 32 points respectively, Abarth UK are yet to score. Driving a Ford Fiesta, Chris Wheeler and Yan Griffiths took maximum points in the MSA British Junior Rally Championship and BRC3 class on the Jim Clark Rally, Harry Threlfall was second in a Renault Twingo and newcomer Gus Greensmith third in another Fiesta. Greensmith now leads the Juniors and the BRC3 drivers by three points from Jonathan Jones

who was fourth in the category on the rally. Jones’ co-driver Jez Rogers, however, leads the BRC3 co-drivers. Calvin Beattie and Emmett Sherry lead the BRC RallyTwo category, BRC2 class and RAVENOL Oils Newcomers Trophy in a Fiesta, although Garry Pearson and Dave Robson won the class on the Jim Clark Rally in a Peugeot 208, finishing fourth overall, one place ahead of Beattie. In the one make series, Pryce and McKenna are tied for first in the Citroën Racing Trophy. Beattie leads the FordFiesta SportTrophy and Threlfall is tied for the lead of the Twingo Renaultsport Trophy UK with Kim Baker. P

Sykes’ Challenge

Richard Sykes and Emma Morrison (pictured)won the Jim Clark Challenge Rally at the end of May, leading the NGK Spark Plugs BRC Challenge Trophy and Class 4 of the MSA British Rally Championship in their Citroën C2. Peugeot 205 crew Ross Hunter and Josh Davison were second, briefly taking the lead towards the end of the rally, but their result puts them joint second in the championship with Neil Matthews and Claire Williams.

Championship Star of the Future category leader Niall Moroney was fourth of the registered drivers in a Peugeot 106 - he and co-driver Elgan Davies now joint fourth in the overall standings and leading Class 5. Gary Wright was fifth. 2008 champion co-driver Glyn Thomas aided the MG ZR crew climb to equal sixth overall in the points table on their first event of the season.

Thinking about memorable events in Rajd Polski and Polish rallying in general over the years is not a difficult task. The Polish Rally has the second longest running event in the world championship calendar, and the third or fourth oldest rally anywhere, so the difficulty is knowing where to begin. Try this for starters. Thinking about all the top Polish drivers we have seen in the WRC, like Sobieslaw Zasada, Janusz Kulig, Krzysztof Holowczyc and Robert Kubica, two of them have been European champions and one WRC2 champion, who would you think had been the best placed Polish driver in a WRC event? You need to go back to the 1973 Rajd Polski. On that event there were only three finishers and the third and final finisher was the Polish driver Maciej Stawowiak, driving a Polski Fiat 125p Group 1 - effectively a completely standard car.

Seven years ago we caught up with Maciej again. “Driving for Polski Fiat was a great experience. Finally I could go rallying without the risk of damaging my own private car! And of course I no longer had forever to go round persuading private friends to help me.” He stayed with the team for twenty years until 1982 when the team finally ground to a halt. He always had a happy streak of luck in his rally driving career. One such occasion was the 1973 Rajd Polski: “This was one of the hardest rallies I have ever done.

3,200km, three days and nights, 55 special stages, no sleeping. Heavy rain two days before the event, bridges were broken and many deviations. Checking in on time at controls was the most important thing, much more important than speed on the stages. There was a 70kph average on transport sections. The route went all around the south of Poland, from the German border to the west and the Russian border to the east. So many cars broke down.” In the end Maciej was one of the finishers with a stroke of luck. “I ran out of

fuel in the middle of the night, the middle of nowhere, and it seemed like everything had gone wrong for us. Then along the road comes a young man who found us some fuel but it was all very difficult. Have you ever shaped your hands like a funnel so as to pour petrol into your car? Over the years I got to know this young man well. His name was Jacek Lewandowski, and five years later he became my regular codriver.” Seven cars reached the finish of that event but only three were within the

limit and classified as a finisher. The winner was Achim Warmbold (co-driven by a certain Jean Todt, whose family roots were in Poland, east of Krakow where the event was based) in a works Fiat Abarth 124. Second was Egon Culmbacher in a Wartburg 323 from East Germany and in a 72bhp Polski Fiat 125p came Maciej. I teased Maciej about remembering being beaten on a WRC event by a Wartburg, but he reminded me it was a tuned Group 2 car, quite an impressive little racer in its day! He not only gained a podium result on a World Championship Rally, but even now no Polish driver has done better in a World Rally

Championship event. One of the main Polish car manufacturers was FSO. They manufactured the Polski Fiat cars, and their official rally team operated out of the special division of the company. This started in around 1972 and was run by Andrzej Jaroszewicz, son of the country’s then Prime Minister. The team bred a generation of young professional drivers in the early ‘70s and ‘80s, among whom were Stawowiak, Krzysztof Komornicki and Tomasz Ciecierzynski. Their original 125p cars were then fitted with 1800cc engines and eventually the team moved on to 2-litre Polonez cars. Under Jaroszewicz’s personal enthusiasm the team expanded to running 1800cc,

four-valve Fiat Abarth124s, all part of the Fiat family, giving maybe 180bhp. FSO had three Abarth 124s, one kept for training (high speed recceing), and the other two were kept in full rally preparation, alternated for use on events. Eventually three Lancia Stratoses were also acquired. Jaroszewicz kept the Stratos for himself while Stawowiak was allowed to drive the Abarths. Stawowiak: “I still dream about those 124s, they were so easy to drive. One season in that car helped me leap ahead in my driving skills. The Abarth was the first car in which I had to use my brakes going uphill!” 1990 was a great dividing time in Polish history, the opening of opportunities which were embraced in full measure. One of the most iconic figures in those times was Sobieslav Zasada who won the European title three times. In 1966 Zasada won the title at the wheel of a Steyr Puch. To gain an inside view, we spoke with Blazej Krupa, a multiple Polish motorsport champion and twice East European Peace and Friendship Cup champion. “Life during the days of the Communist regime was never straightforward, but ways could be found to achieve

one’s ambitions by working around the official systems. I knew Sobieslaw well and had been his co-driver. He managed to succeed in those difficult days, helped by friends from Krakow. He was certainly the most efficient driver I knew, though never the quickest. “In those days you had to be consistent from start-to-finish and had to be clever. He knew how to use regulations to his own advantage, witness his successes in the Steyr Puch which was an extraordinarily small car to use in rallies. He was also an expert in spotting the turning point of a rally. On every rally there is a moment which makes all the difference. He could always spot when that would be, and the ability to do that was the way to win. He is definitely number one in our country’s rally history in my mind.” Choosing to go rallying in a Steyr Puch, a modified Fiat 500, and gaining an international title as a result was no mistake, but it took someone of Zasada’s vision to do it. Fiesta was much too soft for the roads in west Limerick. Wood had to contend with fires beneath his Subaru WRC on each of the opening stages and had power steering woes on the third stage. Meanwhile, Kelleher’s Subaru developed a slight misfire through the opening part of the third stage, but it cleared itself while he had a problem with a rear brake caliper. Local driver Ed O’Callaghan (Escort) slotted into fourth after enduring a half spin on the second stage and brake disc troubles on the third stage. The Ford Focus WRC of Michael O’Brien was fifth followed by Paul Purtill (Ford Escort) and Paddy McVeigh - the reigning Dunlop championship leader, who had an overshoot on the second stage, was hampered by the lack of the digital read out of the transmission system. Josh Moffett (Mitsubishi) in eighth led the Group N category with Eoin Doyle (Ford Focus WRC) and the Subaru of Kevin Barrett completing the top ten. Boyle’s misery continued on the fourth stage when his Subaru punctured the front left wheel,

the car also stopped for several minutes towards the stage finish before he was able to re-join the rally. Although he set the quickest times on the fifth and sixth stages it mattered little and once he discovered the imposition of the 16 minute road penalty, he withdrew at the final service halt. By that point, Moffett led Kelleher by 10.6 seconds with Wood a further 5.6 seconds behind in third. The rally leader was happy with the performance of his Fiesta after his service team stiffened up the suspension. New secondplaced driver Kevin Kelleher had an altercation on the sixth stage that damaged the rear of his Subaru as Wood enjoyed a clean run through all three stages. O’Callaghan continued to lead the two-wheel-drive category and held fourth position, his Escort handled much better following some suspension tweaks. Fifthplaced McVeigh was still hampered by the lack of the digital read out. Michael O’Brien (Ford Focus WRC) occupied sixth with Roy White having a much improved run through the second loop

slotting into seventh followed by Purtill. The top ten also included the Subaru WRC of Kevin Barrett, who was much happier with the performance after the suspension was stiffened and Eoin Doyle (Ford Focus WRC). Elsewhere, Ed Synan (Escort) was eleventh and Josh Moffett continued to lead Group N - even though he clipped a bank on the fourth stage - he was 34.7 seconds in front of his nemesis Shane Maguire (Mitsubishi). Out of the seventh stage Kelleher posted the best time and cut Moffett’s advantage to 9.3 seconds, however, Moffett responded on the penultimate stage and gained 1.6 seconds to lead by 10.9 seconds entering the final stage. The Monaghan driver almost threw it all away on the final stage when he spun, however, he managed to secure the spoils by a margin of 4.6 seconds. Kelleher took second and Wood was eventually classified third after the change to the times for the opening stage. McVeigh had to be content with fourth, but he still leads the Dunlop series.

Michael O’Brien (Ford Focus WRC) was seventh and Paul Purtill (Escort) in eighth spot won the Dunlop Drive of the Day award. Maynooth’s Kevin Barrett (Subaru WRC) netted his first finish of the Dunlop season in a top ten that was completed by the Ford Focus WRC of Eoin Doyle. THE STEPHEN WRIGHT DIARY

Rally Ypres Here We Come! By the time you are reading this, we will be on our way back to Belgium to take on the challenge of the Geko Ypres Rally in our Peugeot 208 R2. The rally is one of the most popular on the European continent and has attracted a stellar entry including over 40 cars in the R2 category alone and will provide a stern test for myself and sister Susanne.

It has been almost 2 months since our last foray to Belgium where we finished 5th among the 208 Rally Trophy runners on the Rallye de Wallonie but we have kept our eye in, by tackling lots of rallies on home soil and working on the set up of the pocket rocket Peugeot.

Images courtesy of www.rallyaround.co.uk

This rally has provided the toughest field of competitors that Susanne and I will have ever competed against. Our focus will remain on the 208 Rally Trophy and accumulating more points in it. However, it would be nice to be in the mix for a podium among the Junior European Championship runners having narrowly missed out on a top 3 placing on the Circuit of Ireland at Easter.

The action at the famous Rally Ypres starts on Friday 20th afternoon when the crews leave the historic town to complete 7 challenging stages before the overnight halt. Saturday resumes with a 10.00am start with 13 stages (including the 27.56km Hollebeke stage) to complete before returning to the finish ramp at 10.00pm. You can find more information on the rally at www. ypresrally.com You can follow us on Twitter @StephenWr1ght and @ susannewright15 while more information on our Rally Team is available by visiting www.wrightrally.com.

Victory for Steve Perez and Paul Spooner puts them both in the record books - Perez for equalling Andy Burton’s top tally of four Dukeries wins and Spooner for recording an unprecedented fifth win for a co-driver. The Ford Focus WRC07 crew headed the standings for the better part of a day when an electrical storm dominated the morning’s stages and the later basked in sunshine. Indeed, the weather played a significant role in the tales of most crews with the slippery conditions, seas of mud and misting windscreens all featuring on a regular basis. Despite his win Perez didn’t escape unscathed as such were the conditions he was unable to stop his car careering through a box junction at the end of a long straight in SS4 Clipstone South. The incident cost him over twenty seconds and the lead of the rally for the only time on a day in which, for the most part, he coped better than his rivals in the changing conditions. He had been fastest from the off, but only a second quicker than Stephen Petch and Ian Windress, who were debuting a Ford Fiesta R5+, through the opening 1.2 miles of Watchwood. The Subaru Impreza of Jim McNeil and Tom Hughes and the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9 of Pat Naylor and Ian Lawrence were both a further second adrift. Completing the top five were Karl and Guy Simmons in an Impreza WRC they had only previously used on Irish tarmac. Perez was fastest again through SS2 Thieves Wood, but this time it was the Impreza WRC of David Project2:Layout 1

Weston Jnr and Kirsty Riddick proving his closest threat as Petch dropped around 25 seconds when the Fiesta’s engine died momentarily. Weston then piled on the pressure with fastest time through SS3 Sherwood Pines before snatching the lead on the following test when Perez had his mishap. Petch was fastest here, climbing to third place ahead of the N4 Class Lancer Evo 9 of Jamie Anderson and Chris Brooks whilst Naylor’s B13 version was now fifth. Perez regained control through the first visit to Portland carving out a 21 second advantage ahead of both Petch and Weston, the latter having had a minor excursion. Anderson and Naylor held station while McNeil’s run ended here following an altercation with a tree. The scheduled Harlow Wood had been cancelled earlier on safety

grounds so SS7 Blidworth followed service and Weston was quickest, two seconds faster than the tying Perez and Petch. Perez dominated proceedings through the modified routes to the second visits to Sherwood Pines and Clipstone South, but Weston wouldn’t go any further as mechanical gremlins curtailed his run. Most crews came through the final Portland stage unscathed, but Ben Cressey and Mark Swallow were a notable exception, missing out on a top ten finish after putting their Impreza on it’s roof. Perez and Petch finished a comfortable 1-2 while Anderson clung onto third in spite of N4 winner Naylor’s best efforts. Russ Thompson and Andy Murphy survived a series of overshoots to maintain their championship lead after securing fifth in their Lancer Evo9. A post

service change of tyre suited Simmons, even though he finished SS10 running on a rim, he was happy with sixth. Roland Llewellin and Jamie Edwards almost didn’t make it beyond the end of the first stage, but a good Samaritan loaned them the tools to fix an errant intercooler pipe. They then went on to finish seventh in their N4 Lancer Evo 9. Class B13 winners Tom Preston and Jamie Forrest had the active diffs on their Lancer Evo 9 fail after SS2, but still finished eighth despite the handicap. Historic winners Matthew Robinson and Sam Collis finished ninth overall and top Escort Mk2 crew ahead of class rivals Richard Lane and Frank Richer, who completed the top ten. The windscreen of Peter Smith and Patrick Walsh’s Metro 6R4 was constantly misting during the wettest of the stages, but they worked their way back up the order to finish eleventh. Top 1400 runners Walster and Wade were an impressive twelfth. The pair finished three seconds ahead of Allan McDowall and Gavin Heseltine’s Escort Mk2. The series heads back to Wales for the sixth round, Quinton Motor Club’s Nicky Grist Stages, which will be featured in next month’s edition of Pacenotes.

Class RF1.0: Sam Bilham and Graham Wild withstood an overshoot on SS8 to get their Nissan Micra to the finish and bag a maximum points haul. Class RF1.4: Nick Carr and Joe Sturdy won the VW Lupo battle forcing Neil Andrew and Dom Adams to settle for second place. Tom Jordan and Jonathan Jackson were third in their Nissan Micra. Class RF1.6: Winners James West and Steve Eggington were the sole category entrants in their VW Polo. Class 1400C: Matthew Jackson and Sasha Heriot finished over a minute ahead of the chasing pack despite losing a similar amount of time in SS8 after spinning and stalling their Micra. Nova crew Rob and Michael Evett finished second ahead of the Peugeot 106 of Simon and Tristan Rogers. Class 1400S: Back after a five-year absence Tom Walster and novice co-driver Jeff Wade finished twelfth overall and fastest 1400cc car in their Suzuki Swift. A series of early overshoots prompted a change of tyres then the loss of second gear on SS8 threatened to wreck their chances. Fortunately for them David Bennett and Alistair McNeil, who had earlier lost time with a miss-fire were forced to retire their Nova at this point with a complete lack of gears. Mat Smith and Giles Dykes also hit trouble here when a driveshaft broke on their Ford Ka forcing

three seconds behind to complete an Escort Mk2 1-2-3.

Hutchings had a trying day in their Nova, but their gritty determination was ultimately rewarded with the class win. Their problems included clutch issues on SS1, a massive spin on SS3 and an off on SS5 that resulted in a rear stub axle getting bent and rendering the car ‘twitchy’ for the rest of the day. If that wasn’t enough the exhaust parted company with the car mid-way through SS10 causing a loss of power, but they still finished 16 seconds clear of Nigel Booley and Dave Catto’s Escort Mk2. Philip Clark and Ian Jones repeated their result here last year finishing third in their Escort Mk1. Class B11: The intermittent missfire that has plagued Nick Dobson and Steve Pugh’s Escort Mk2 all season returned to haunt them and an overshoot on SS3 resulted in a puncture. They then had three more overshoots on SS4 where reverse gear went wrong for a moment, but it all came good through SS10 where they set fastest 2WD time. The pair finished convincing class winners, more than four minutes ahead of John Tillet and Guy Kirby while Graham Haigh and Kari, who also had a miss-fire issue, were just

Class B12: Simon Smith and Sylvia Earle racked up an impressive six-minute winning margin in their Escort Mk2. Ian Jemison and Dean Kellett had been on course for the runners-up spot until their Porsche Boxster expired between the flying finish and the stop line on the final stage. That promoted the BMW 323 of Phillip Rowland and Phillip Woodcock to second place and the BMW 316 Compact of Chris Marlow and Garry Green to third. Class B13: Preston/Forrest; Smith/ Walsh; Dave Welch/Stuart Proctor (Subaru Impreza) (see main report). Class B14: Perez/Spooner; Petch/ Windress; Simmons/Simmons (see main report). Class H1: As sole class entrants Chris Skill and Glenn Hall only needed to get their Escort Mk2 home. The pair finished 21st overall. Class H2: In a repeat of their success here last year Jeremy Easson and Mike Reynolds were crowned class winners in their Datsun 240Z. They finished over three minutes ahead of the Escort Mk2 of Dave Forrest and Charlie Carter who improved on last year’s third place. Finishing a close third, just two seconds adrift, were David Dobson and Phil Sandham in their Pinto-powered Mk2 after dropping over a minute on SS9 when the car became bogged down. Class H3: Robinson/Collis; Lane/ Richer; McDowall/Heseltine (see main report). Jason Lepley, co-driven for the first time by his 16 year-old son George, held second place for much of the day until their Escort Mk2 went off and into retirement on SS7.

Clubman Corner Tom PresTon Favourite rally & why?

Rally Barbados! Kevin Clark and I competed there in 2003 in a group N Subaru and took 40 friends with us. We were quickly named team lash this was due to amount of Banks beer and rum we all drank. The rally itself did not go great as the gearbox failed on the third stage so we were out, but on a plus side we got more time in the pub.

Favourite rally driver & why? Colin McRae, I had the honour of meeting Colin through a pal of mine (Martin Wilkinson from CA1 sport) while sking in Verbier. He was as mad on the slopes (And in the bar!) as he was behind the wheel of a car. An amazing talent behind the wheel and someone that will be missed by everyone in the sport.

Favorite moment in rallying?

There are many good times I can think off, but probably the most memorable was my first event, the opposite lock rally on Mamby airfield in an Escort Cosworth (I even remember we were car number 69). A good friend of mine called Carl Duffield was codriving for me, I was really nervous coming up to the start of stage one. Carl on the other hand did not have the same problem as at his night out in Louth the night before seemed to have got the better of him and was asleep at the time control.

Wales Rally GB last year. It was only the 3rd gravel event I have ever done and Jamie Forrest and I managed 3rd overall which I was really really happy with.

Who helped you in motorsport?

My dad competed in road rallies in the 80’s and having grown up with cars I wanted to have a go. Two of dad’s rivals (And friends) in those days were Ken Skidmore and Kevin Clark. Kevin was my first co-driver and taught me a lot and Ken sold me a Subaru, I did not have enough money to pay for it all so he let me pay him half when I bought the car then half when I sold another car which was nice! Marcus Taylor has mainly looked after my cars over the years (And built M3 tarmac rally car for me) also Warren Anderson and Carl Duffield have been a big help. My uncle owns a body shop (Elite Motor Bodies) and have also helped me whenever a tree jumped out at me!

Biggest disappointment in rallying for you?

Crashing in the Isle of Man. We were 8th overall and I was not listening to the notes and went off!

Best bit of advice ever given to you? Don’t eat yellow snow.

he Moffett brothers are

currently taking the Irish rally world by storm. Sam and Josh have have been consistently notching up outright and class victories, with Sam piloting his potent Ford Fiesta WRC while Josh is a force to be reckoned with in his Group N Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9. Pacenotes caught up with the two brothers in Monaghan at the Combilift headquarters, just ahead of the Donegal International Rally to find out what makes them tick...

“Our interest in rallying has been there since childhood,” 22-year-old Josh revealed. “Our father was always interested in it and competing in events so we were always going to rallies.” Sam added: “I rolled my first buggy when I was three or four years old. We both had go-karts at a young age - we always had pretty much everything the same. So if I had one go-kart, Josh’s had to be the exact same. That’s still the same today, whether it’s rally cars or whatever it is. And that gave us a competitive drive to try to beat each other, which probably still makes us drive on to go faster.” That rivalry between the two brothers has been there throughout all their lives, and although Sam is a couple of years older than his brother, they both started rallying around the same time at Rallysport Association events. “Josh was 12 at the time and I would have been 14 or 15,” Sam explained. “We had a 1.2 Nova and both started at the same time rallying at the likes of Aghadowey. From there we were always fighting to beat each other.” Their paths took a slightly different route once they moved on from the Novas. Sam was of an age that he could contest Motorsport pacenotes JUly 2014

Ireland events and it was around eight years ago that an Extreme buggy was purchased. “We were the first to bring it in, but it only seems to be taking off now,” Sam said. “I drove it more than Josh - he was still doing the Rallysport Association events. Then we got a Peugeot 106 and we both did the likes of Aghadowey. At that time we were sharing the cars, but when I went to do the stages in the 106, Josh went to race T Cars in the UK.”

“We were the first to bring it in but it only seems to be taking off now,” T Cars was a saloon based racing series in the UK that was exclusively open for 14-17 year old drivers and it was this series that provided Josh with an abundance of experience. “It was a bit like a junior championship of the Irish Dunlop Supercars,” Josh explained. “I did the T Cars for a year and then moved on to the Dunlop Supercars. I was very lucky and had an opportunity with a very professional team. I had a professional racing driver as a tutor who helped to improve my driving and there was a lot of data reading from the cars. That allowed you to compare data with other competitors so you could see where you could improve. For example, that helped identify if you were braking too early or too late into a corner.” Sam added: “I also did a year and a half of the Dunlop Supercars, but Josh was definitely better at it after he went to the UK. I didn’t have

the same opportunity - I just went racing and if I was half a second down, I just had to find somewhere else to go faster!”

too!” It was another big learning curve for Sam, but he admits it’s easier to move ‘up’ in terms of car technology than move ‘down’.

Later, the brothers turned their attention back to rallying, with Sam spending a year with a Citroen C2. “I had an awful lot of bad luck with that car,” he admitted. “Some people started saying that it was down to me being too rough on the car, but I was fairly sure it wasn’t. Whenever I did manage to finish we had some good results, but it was always a struggle to get the car over the finish line. It was whenever I got into an Evo that things started going well for me.” Sam was enjoying his time in an Evo and had no plans to switch to World Rally Car power. Only for some bad luck to hit during a test session two days before last year’s Monaghan Stages Rally, the opportunity to drive a World Car may have never transpired.

“I thought if I could take any jump or corner fast in the Evo, then the Subaru should be fit to take it faster and better,” Sam explained. “The jump into a faster or better car is a lot easier than doing the opposite. A couple of weeks after Donegal I went to another rally in the Evo and in the first two miles, I nearly put the car off about 10 times. I was braking too late, trying to take corners too fast, but the car couldn’t do what the Subaru was capable of. It’s a lot harder to come down in technology than it is to go up.” The outings in a Subaru World Rally Car gave Sam a taste for the extra oomph and with results to back it up, suddenly the idea of a more permanent move to WRC power became feasible. But instead of opting for a similar car to what he had hired, Sam decided to go for a new Fiesta. “I found that the Fiesta is a real driver’s car,” Sam explained. “When you come out of a stage, you know you’ve driven it. You can go hard in the Subaru but it’s more relaxed. There’s a lot more technology in the older World Rally Cars, but with the Fiesta you’re doing more driving and it gives you more of a thrill. And it’s the future, which is the biggest thing.”

“I went for a test two days before the Monaghan Stages in the Evo and the engine blew,” Sam explained. “If it had been any other round of the National Championship, it would have been one of those things, but it was my home rally.” “I arrived home and Dad asked if I’d like to hire a World Car,” he smiled. “I couldn’t believe it! I left the house at 9pm on the Friday night, was in Kenny McKinstry’s at midnight to make sure the seating position and everything was alright. I got my recce done on the Saturday morning, then I had a test in the car - an S14 spec Subaru WRC - at 2pm in the afternoon. After that we went to the rally and fortunately enough we won it. From there we thought we would try Donegal and managed win1that Project2:Layout 1 27/11/12 15:43 to Page

What REIS can do for you...

“I couldn’t have done the Circuit of Ireland without it,” he added, “and I set a fastest stage time there, which has been the highlight of my year so far.” As for Josh, he turned his attention to rallying once he was 17. He stepped from the Dunlop Supercars into the family’s Peugeot 106 rally car and spent a year driving that before switching to an Evo. “The learning curve continued when I changed cars,” Josh admitted. “The Evo was a lot faster and at one stage I thought you could take any jump flat in the car. That stopped in Clare - there was a huge jump and the car bounced when it landed. It was all over after that...and I haven’t been so hard on the jumps since!”

INTERVIEW WITH THE MOFFETT BROTHERS WORDS :: JONATHAN MAcDONAlD// IMAgES :: JONATHAN MAcDONAlD/ BARRON pIx

He’s looking to get the National, Tarmac and Forestry titles...I missed out on the double in 2011 over a very small part in the gearbox but Josh is trying for the triple “It was when I started to get going in the Evo that I met my navigator, John Rowan. He was a good steady navigator and was able to commit to events. Last year we did 20 rallies - it’s hard to find someone who can commit the time to do something like that.” Josh is enjoying a similarly hectic year of rallying in 2014 and has some hopes of securing a triple Group N crown, something that his brother hasn’t managed to achieve. “My plan is to concentrate on the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship,” Josh said. “We lost points in Galway over a technical thing, but if we can get a few more good results, hopefully we’ll be fit to win Group N in the Tarmac Championship. I won it last year so I’m hoping to do it again and I’m also leading the Forestry Championship outright so I want to keep that going too.” Sam added: “He’s looking to get the National, Tarmac and Forestry titles...I missed out on the double in

pacenotes JUly 2014

2011 over a very small part in the gearbox, but Josh is trying for the triple!” Seemingly, as far as Josh is concerned, whatever his brother can do, he wants to do even better! Sam is also a former Billy Coleman award winner, but Josh is hot on his heels. He was a finalist last year and has already been nominated for this year’s award. As for Sam’s 2014 season, he doesn’t have any solid championship plans, despite potentially being in the hunt for the Irish Tarmac Championship title. “I’m not concentrating on the Tarmac Championship,” Sam said. “I would like to go abroad but Donegal is my focus at the minute. I do worry that my car isn’t going to have enough power compared to the two-litre cars, especially in Donegal, but I’m just going to have to drive it a bit harder.” “I definitely would have been in Ypres had it not clashed with Donegal,” he revealed. “I would have missed any other Tarmac round, but I can’t miss Donegal. I’m looking at possibly the Flanders Rally or an event in the Czech Republic in August.” Evidently both Sam and Josh are very driven individuals, and that applies to their work life as well as their exploits in motorsport. Both brothers joined the family Combilift business - a bespoke forklift manufacturing company - at 17 and quickly learned the ropes by working their way through the ranks. “Working in the family business was always something that we wanted to be involved in,” Josh

said. “When I left school, I started building machines, just to become familiar with them and how they go together. I did that for around a year before moving into the office at headquarters to do design work. Now I’m one of the main designers in our other facility where we build the straddle carriers and design new machines. And because I’m in a separate factory, I manage the factory as well.” Sam is equally involved at the Monaghan headquarters, and like Josh, he has also worked his way through the ranks. “From the age of 12, I was always doing small things,” Sam admitted. “It was always an interest for me to be ‘hands on’. Then I did some production line work, then research and development work, set up the production line and that sort of thing. It was more than just building a forklift at times. My role changed to product improvement and general running of the factory this year. It’s less hands on and there aren’t as many late nights, but there is more responsibility.” The lads are keen to help keep the 16-year-old family business at the top of its game. In a relatively short space of time, Combilift has grown to employ around 300 people and their products can be found in more than 75 countries. Sam and Josh both know that success in business is key to ensure that they can keep rallying on the stages. Meanwhile, outside of work and rally life, the brothers have both recently taken up cycling as a way to keep fit and relax. “I used to play quite a bit of rugby,

gaelic football and soccer at school,” Sam said, “but there’s quite a high risk of getting injured and it would kill me to miss a rally as a result of an injury. So in the last year I’ve taken an interest in cycling and Josh just got a bicycle for his birthday. The funny thing is, he had to get one that is identical to mine so he can try to beat me!” Josh added: “But I’ve got a lot of work to do before I can beat him!” It’s obvious that the friendly brotherly rivalry prevails in all aspects of their lives - rallying, business and pleasure! But just who is the quickest of the two young guns? “I would say it’s down to surface,” Sam says. “I like to think I’m quicker on tarmac. I don’t like doing an event without a recce. I trust an awful lot in my notes...and that’s the excuse I’m sticking to!” Josh adds: “We really only started doing gravel in the last couple of years. I think I just picked it up more naturally at the start...I had the edge on Sam. I really enjoy the forests and there’s good races against the likes of Owen Murphy, Pat O’Connell and the rest of those guys. The last round was something else - it really was hell for leather!” Both brothers are still in their early 20s, but they already look set to dominate the Irish stages for many years to come. Their drive to succeed - and beat one another - will only serve to push them ever higher in the rally leaderboards. Everyone else will need to up their game to ensure that they are not left trailing in the Moffett brothers’ dust. P

Alexander Vassallo and Neil Colman put all their experience of Crail to good use to top the podium on the second round of the 2014 Brick & Steel Junior 1000 Ecosse Challenge. The 2014 Summer Stages Junior

Rally featured four stages of almost eight miles each. The length of stage was a first for many of the drivers, but being young they all took it in their stride. Conditions at Crail Raceway were perfect all day after a dull, damp start. The rally started about 10.30 on stage three of the senior rally and the track had mostly dried out. Vassallo started very strongly in his Citroen C1 on the first stage, and he opened a healthy 16 second lead over second-placed crew Dylan O’Donnell and Garry Muir (Nissan Micra). And he built on this lead on every stage of the day with O’Donnell coming second on all, but the last stage to take second overall – his second of the year. The gap at the end was just over 1 minute. But Dylan, with reserve co-driver Garry Muir calling out the instructions, never stopped trying all day. At the finish he said, “I think I was overdriving a bit on a couple of stages.”

Sitting in fourth place for the first three stages, Sandy Fairbairn and Colin Reay (Nissan Micra) entered the last stage with a nine second lead over Michael Robertson and Phil Sandham (Toyota Aygo). But Robertson managed to find that little bit extra and he was faster than Fairbairn by ten seconds on the last stage to take fourth place by one second. But the beautifully liveried Aygo of Robertson was sporting some damage on the bodywork on the co-driver’s side after an argument with a tyre chicane on the second stage. Sixth up was the revelation of the day – new boy Finlay Retson with out of retirement Fraser Jones calling the route. Fin and his dad Dave spent the past year preparing for the day, and Fin put in a text book performance on this his first ever rally. Young Reston is a real prospect and one to watch as the season continues.

And in seventh a cautious Brandon Walsh with Ian Sheills co-driving. Sporting a very unusual two tone Citroen C1 – with blue panels showing where the new shell was and white panels from the wreck that came away from Kames. But it is a real credit to the team that the car appeared at all after Kames. And Brandon almost brought it back the way it started – apart from the co-driver’s side window which took had a small dent caused by a brush with a bale on the last stage. Hot on Brandon’s heels all day was Harry Chalmers with new co-driver Lisa Watson sitting with him in his Nissan Micra. The pair finished the day nine seconds behind Brandon, and there was great joy in the Lawrence of Kemnay camp. That made two brilliant results in as many weeks for the Chalmers family with mum Lyn completing the gruelling Moonwalk Scotland in Edinburgh for charity. Next up in ninth, and delighted to have completed another rally with all bumpers attached to the car were Dale Kell and Peter Weall (Nissan Micra). Now that the exams are over and the summer holidays will soon begin, 15-yearold Dale will be concentrating on building his driving experience. But that is much better than repairing the car. The last of the finishers were Cameron Russell and Martin Murray (Nissan Micra) in tenth place. Cameron was on his second ever rally and is another driver, who needs more seat time to develop. So the plan for the day was to learn and take the car home in one

Michael Dickie and Martin Forrest (Toyota Aygo) held third place all day and did post a quicker time than O’Donnell on the last stage. They finished 10 seconds behind O’Donnell, but reported no major dramas during the day.

And the unfortunates – thankfully we did not have as many dramatic exits as we had on round one at Kames. First to go was local boy Brodie Balfour with Ian Nicol in their very tidy Toyota Aygo. Just as they were about to start the second lap of the first stage, the Aygo ground to a halt with no drive. A later inspection pointed to a gearbox failure. This was a bitter blow for Brodie, who regularly practices at Crail. It was Andy Struthers and Andrew Falconer’s turn to grind to a halt during stage three. A broken drive-shaft in their Nissan Micra meant it was the end of the show for them. Andy had been sitting in sixth place up to that point. And learning just how cruel rallying can sometimes be was Harris Wilson whose car started spluttering and then stopped on the last stage. Co-driver Craig Wallace eventually found and fixed a problem with the fuel feed, but by the time they got going again they were over the time limit allowed to complete the stage. Crews will not have to wait as long as they did between round one and two. The junior teams will be back at Kames for the Albar Rally on July 13. Pacenotes Rally Magazine will have all the action covered. P

The British and Irish flocked to Sol Rally Barbados last month where they enjoyed plenty of motorsport fun and frolics on the Caribbean island! Paul Bird and Aled Davies claimed the win at the Scotiabank King of the Hill, but Bird’s bid for a third consecutive Rally Barbados victory came unstuck on the 11th stage when he ran wide and clipped a rock. Until that point, he had been fastest on every stage, but the incident put him out of the rally. That left Roger Skeete at the head of the leaderboard and he stayed there until the finish, securing a record setting 13th win. He headed home Rob Swann and Darren Garrod by 35 seconds, with John Powell and Hugh Hutchinson third. Other visiting crews included Roger Duckworth and Mark Broomfield, who claimed fifth in their Impreza WRC. Just outside the top 10, Frank Kelly took 11th and second in class behind local driver Andrew Jones and England’s Lindsay Pilkington. Nigel Worswick and Rebecca Kirsch, who was enjoying her first rally, overcame early mechanical dramas to take 15th, just behind Paul Horton and Kristian Yearwood. Tim Green and Rob Smith secured a top 20 position in their Impreza, while John Hardman and Alistair Dodd were a few places behind in their Micra. They were followed home by Simon Wallis

and Peter Horsman, who were lucky to get away with a 10 second penalty after their Subaru refused to fire up after the finish of one of the stages. Their service crew came to the rescue in their van, only for it to get stuck in a drain. Oops! Allan MacKay and Mo Downey had a troubled start after their engine expired during the hill climb, but they managed to get another shipped out in time for the rally allowing them to power to a class win. Irishman Peter Gallagher also secured a class win, as did Dick Mauger and Steve McNulty as well as Chris Shooter and Bev LeGood. Brendan Brosnan and Sean Moriarty took a class prize in their Peugeot 205, while Ding Boston and Andy Parsons were all smiles at the finish, as were Cheryl and Barry Spencer. Retirements included Joe McQuillan and Annette Daly (engine), Kenny Hall and Fenny Wesselink, as well as Brian Watson and Caroline ‘Gill’, who had persistent trouble with their Audi, but still managed to complete the final Bushy Park stage to the delight of the thousands of spectators. severn success for Elliott... Nick Elliott and Dave Price took their second championship win of the season on the Severn Valley Historic Stages - the fourth round of the West Wales Rally Spares R.A.C. Rally Championship. From a field packed with quality, Elliott and Price (Ford Escort Mk2) revelled on stages in Crychan, Cefn and Halfway, but had to keep pushing hard to see off a concerted challenge from the similar car of Richard Hill/ Steffan Evans. However, one of the drives of the rally came from young Ben Llewellin and co-driver Paul Williams on their first full historic outing. They took third overall in their Ford Escort Mk2, just nine seconds adrift of Hill.

Championship newcomers and father and son crew Ernie and Will Graham (Ford Escort Mk1) took a fine victory in Category 2. Meanwhile, other category winners included Jason Pritchard/ Phil Clarke (Ford Escort Mk2) in Category K and brothers Simon Crook and Alister Crook (Opel Manta) in Category O.

Geoff Jones Motorsport Welsh Challenge. Fresh from his trip to Morocco to service for his brother Frank, Ray Cunningham had a new codriver in Andrew Bushe alongside and, after Bob Gibbons put his Ford Cortina Mk2 off on stage three Cunningham led the Walker Diecastings Category 1 for the rest of the day. “It was okay until the last three stages when we lost second gear. So we just held on and kept it safe,” said Cunningham. Peter Stimson and Mark Butler had been flying in their Ford Anglia. “We spun on stage two, but have more speed and confidence,” said Stimson. They remained Cunningham’s closest challenger, but Simon Wallis and Graham Wride (Lotus Cortina) were gaining on them too. Stimson and Wallis started stage four one second apart, but by the end Wallis was ahead by ten and into a secure second place. Stimson’s push continued but now Ian Beveridge and Paul Price

(Volvo PV544) were closing in. The Anglia was still six seconds up as they started the penultimate stage through Crychan, where sadly Stimson rolled into retirement. Geoff Taylor/Steve Greenhill (Sunbeam Imp Sport) lost three minutes in Halfway when they had to stop. “We had a rock jammed between the carburettor and manifold and it left the throttle stuck wide open. So we had to stop and chip it out,” Taylor explained. They still won class B1, but with only 14 seconds in hand over the Saab 96 of Stephen Higgins/Don Bramfoot. Stimson dominated B3 after Gibbons had put his Cortina off the road on stage three. But the late demise of the Anglia handed the class win back to the recovering Gibbons while Callum Barney and Ron Channon picked up four minutes road penalty in their return with a re-shelled Ford Cortina GT. Wallis led class B4 all day, with Beveridge consolidating second

too fast into a right hander and stalled,” he admitted. Not only did Hill go back ahead, but Meirion Evans/Iwan Jones did too and it became a tie for second place. Hill was just managing to keep Evans at bay, while Elliott survived a couple of minor excursions on the last stage to take a second win of the year. despite over-heating worries after Graham Waite/Gill Cotton (Volvo Amazon) retired at service. “The gearbox mount broke, so it was leaning on the engine and before that we had a rear brake problem and had to use the handbrake,” said Waite.

Category Two Ernie and Will Graham collected the Capital Construction Category 2 spoils with a tremendous performance in their Escort Mk1, but had trailed David Stokes/Guy Weaver similar until stage five. “It was a normal day at the office until then,” said Stokes. Victory for Graham was a great start to their R.A.C. Championship campaign. Warren Philliskirk/Nigel Hutchinson had led the chase to the Stokes versus Graham duel, but found Chris Browne/Ali CornwellBrowne closing. Going into the penultimate stage they were tied, but Philliskirk hit a rock and rolled, handing the place to Browne. “I just had to get a finish this time, so I’m really pleased with the result,” said Browne. Stuart and Linda Cariss (Ford Escort Mk1) topped class C2 and did a great job without any service crew, with rivals Robin

Shuttleworth/Mark Midgley out after the opening stage with clutch failure. Championship newcomers Nick Danks and Martin Corbett (Escort Mk1) showed impressive pace and headed Peter Smith/Paul Spooner (Opel Ascona) in C3. Hamsterley winners Dave Kirby/ Chris Rixon also went out with an off on stage four when lying second, bringing Kirby’s impressive R.A.C. finishing record to a temporary halt.

Category Three There were dramas from the start in the Rob Smith Rallying Category 3 when Tour of Hamsterley winner Matt Edwards, with Sam Collis back alongside, went OTL after water was found in his Escort Mk2’s fuel. A contaminated supply at a filling station was the likely cause. Elliott and Price went straight into a three-second lead over Hill on the opening stage. “I didn’t want to push too hard, but just keep a balance,” said Elliott. But Hill found the Halfway stage a different challenge. “I just couldn’t get into it,” he said, which was reflected in the times as he lost second place to Llewellin. But it was Llewellin’s turn to make a mistake in stage four. “I was

Terry Brown and Den Golding brought their Escort Mk2 home in a strong fourth despite damaging the steering rack during the morning stages, while Tomas Davies/Eurig Davies were a creditable fifth in D5 after changing cars on the morning of the event after hitting engines dramas on Friday in their own car. The Hillman Avengers of Graham Thatcher/Robert James and Keith Davison/Henry Richardson battled it out for class D2 honours. “We had water leaking onto the clutch pedal from the heater matrix which was fun at hairpins,” said Thatcher after taking the win. “We had a new engine and we have got power now,” said Davison. There was a close finish in D3 among the Pinto-powered Escort Mk2s with Adrian Young/Gwynfor Jones taking the win by only three seconds from Ben Friend/Sean Kennedy after an enthralling daylong duel. Owen Murphy/James O’Brien (Talbot Sunbeam Lotus) comfortably led home the similar car of James Stait/Mike Harris in class D4. Pritchard and Clarke were never headed in the Holton Homes Category K, but had their share of early problems. “We almost ran out of fuel on stage three, even though we had filled it to the brim,” said Pritchard. Tom Coughtrie/ Calvin Cooledge were next up after Darren Moon/Tim Sayer stopped in the opening stage and retired after three stages with coil failure. In the Open Category Simon and Alister Crook had a cracking day in their Opel Manta and led all the way to finish almost a minute up on the Toyota Starlet of Layton Waters and Kevin Bowcott. Barry Stevenson-Wheeler/John Pickavance (Escort Mk2) closed on Waters towards the end. Neal Dwyer/Simon Dwyer (Escort Mk2) and Alan Carfrae/Liam Carfrae (Escort Mk1) were next. P

Confirming the details, Ulster Rally Clerk of the Course Lewis Boyd said:“It is exciting to be back in the rallying heartland of Fermanagh and Tyrone and in particular Enniskillen. We look forward to welcoming competitors and spectators from across the British Isles and Europe to the August event. It is great to have the continuing support of Benny O’Hanlon and the enthusiastic Todds Leap team and we are also delighted to again have the backing of Fermanagh District council and the Northern Ireland Tourist Board.” Confirming their support for the Ulster Rally, Todds Leap MD Benny O’Hanlon

commented:“Todds Leap is pleased to be sponsoring the Ulster Rally for a record-breaking seventh consecutive year. As Northern Ireland’s number one activity centre we are totally dedicated and committed to supporting regional events which support the tourist trade and the local economy. The Todds Leap Ulster Rally attracts thousands of spectators to Northern Ireland each year and reaches a global audience show casing the region at its sporting best. Todds Leap is looking forward to another successful rally and we wish the organisers, participants and supporters all the best for what will be another thrilling event in Fermanagh.” The Enniskillen area has enjoyed a prominent place in the history of the Ulster Rally, having hosted the traditional Saturday morning breakfast halt in Ballinamallard during the 1980’s and 1990’s, and after the success of last year’s event, which won the Best British Championship Event Award for the third time, the organisers are delighted to be returning to the Fermanagh Lakelands. Historic Rallying:

Like a Fine Wine Fancy being whisked back in time to a golden era of rallying? Then make sure you sample the beautiful sights and sounds of historic rallying!

T

his is very much a growth area of our sport, providing competitors with a high level of competition while spectators get the opportunity to see an older generation of stunning cars that would otherwise have been confined to museums and the history books. For example, take a look at the FIA European Historic Rally Championship. There are 14 rounds in the series, covering the length and breadth of Europe, with each event attracting a delectable array of rally cars. A quick look down the entry list for June’s Ypres Rally, which took place on 20 June, revealed cars such as the Lancia Stratos, Triumph TR8, Opel

Ascona and Kadette B, as well as a mouthwatering array of Porsche 911s and Escorts. It’s no wonder that these events are popular with spectators! The European series in particular often attracts wellknown competitors from the world of rallying. Former World Champion Carlos Sainz has been known to take part in - and win some events. In fact, his brother Antonio regularly competes in the Spanish historic rally series and finished third in his category among the European historic crews at round two’s Rally Costa Brava earlier this year. Outside of the European Championship, there are also

some special events organised for historic rally cars but the Eifel Rally Festival must be top of the list in terms of prestige. Similar to the Slowly Sideways events that take place around the world, the Eifel Rally Festival is a noncompetitive event that isn’t timed. But don’t let that put you off. The demonstration runs use closed roads that have previously been used as part of the German Rally Championship, and with a high calibre of drivers as well as cars, these are definitely not slow demo runs! This year’s Eifel Rally takes place over 24-26 July. Based in Daun, Germany, a number of high profile names have been confirmed such as Walter Rohrl, Stig Blomqvist, Bjorn Waldegard, Harald Demuth,

Harri Toivonen and winner of the first-ever WRC round, Jean Claude Andruet. There are a host of other wellknown drivers too, as well as a host of other special cars, such as an ex-Bruno Saby Renault 5 Turbo, an ex-Harri Toivonen Metro 6R4 (C96 KOG), Skoda 130 RS, Lancia Beta Coupe, Ford RS200, BMW M3, Porsche 911, to name just a few. It’s truly a special event and if you want to see possibly the largest and most prestigious gathering of historic cars in the one place, then head to Germany at the end of July. Closer to home, an increasing amount of competitors in the UK have turned their attention JULY 2014 pacenotes

to historic rallying in recent years. The Mintex MSA British Historic Rally Championship (BHRC) has long been a popular series among historic competitors, and the introduction of the West Wales Rally Spares RAC Rally Championship in 2013 transpired to be a welcome addition to the historic rally calendar. There are now more with more than 100 registered drivers in the series, while the BHRC has just over 30. In Ireland, historic rallying

fails to attract the same number of competitors that the British series manage to entice into action but there is still healthy competition among the Irish contenders. The Irish Tarmac Historic Championship is regarded as the premier Irish historic series, and this year’s Championship has attracted just over 20 registered drivers. A handful of competitors also tackle historic categories in the likes of the Montgomery Motorsport Northern Ireland Championship and Dunlop

National Rally Championship. It’s also important to note that the term ‘historic rallying’ is actually a broad description that effectively covers a number of separate categories including historic, post-historic and classic. In all of the main championships and events, competitors are split into a number of categories depending on the age of their vehicle, and then they are designated an appropriate class.

So in a time when some events struggle to attract a strong entry from more modern machinery, perhaps the saying that ‘sometimes you have to go backward to move forward’ is true. But after seeing (and hearing) some of these stunning cars in action, I think most of us will want to stay in the past after enjoying a true historic rallying experience!

Championships: BHRC The Mintex MSA British Historic Rally Championship (BHRC) is a seven round series that is currently organised and promoted by the Historic Rally Car Register (pending contractual agreement with the MSA, the Roger Albert Clark Motor Club Ltd will take over from 2015). It is open to cars from the early 1960s through to 1985 and features four categories, each containing a number of different classes. Category 1: For cars registered before 31 December 1967. (Sometimes described as ‘historic’.) Category 2: For cars registered between 1 January 1968 and 31 December 1974. (Sometimes described as ‘post-historic’.) Category 3: For cars registered between 1 January 1975 and 31 December 1981. (Sometimes described as ‘classic’.)

Category 4: For cars registered between 1 January 1982 and 31 December 1985. (This category is not eligible for any BHRC awards. Only eligible for HRCR Category 4 Cup.) Each category is split into various classes, with cars separated into specific classes, usually dependant on engine capacity. Championship points are awarded based on category finishing position and class finishing position. Bonus points are also awarded for each day of an event that a competitor starts.

2014 SeaSon Update Just two rounds of this year’s

Championship had been contested before Pacenotes went to print. Round two’s Rally North Wales was cancelled (the series’ reserve event will now host a round of the championship) so competitors have only tackled March’s Mid-Wales Historic Stages and May’s Pirelli Historic Rally. David Stokes has made a perfect start to the season with maximum category and class scores on both rounds so far. That puts him at the head of the tables, one point ahead of Dessie Nutt. Porsche driver Dessie won his class at round one

but finished second in his category, dropping a point to Stokes. County Down man Stanley Orr is also in the hunt, holding third overall, just two points behind the series leaders. Shawn Rayner, Simon Tysoe and Wayne Bonser complete the top six.

West Wales Rally Spares RAC Rally Championship Organised by the Roger Albert Clark Motor Club Ltd, the inaugural WWRS RAC Rally Championship took place in 2013 and immediately received a swell of support from historic competitors. By the end of the season, more than 80 crews had registered for the series, with Irishman Marty McCormack claiming the championship title from Jason Pritchard. The Championship has gone from strength to strength in 2014 with more than 100 registered crews. It seems organisers have got the formula for success just right, with crews enticed to enter the series' events with the promise of historic competitors running first on the road at all rallies. It is perhaps no surprise then that the Roger Albert Clark Motor Club ihas been selected by the MSA as the preferred 'bidder' to run the BHRC from 2015. The tender submitted is now at the negotiation stage. Similar to the BHRC, the WWRS RAC Championship is also split into a number of categories. This series also runs categories 1 to 4 but in addition, there are a couple of extra categories to cater for additional vehicles. These are: Category K - FIA Appendix K Class: Cars first registered on or before 31 December 1985, complying with FIA Appendix K classes, R49 of the MSA competitor yearbook. Vehicles must be accompanied by a valid FIA Historic Technical Passport. (Note: the BHRC includes FIA Appendix K class vehicles within its class structure in each category.) Category O - Open Class: Cars first registered up to 31 December 1986 complying with the MSA 2014 technical regulations, that do not comply with any other Championship class.

Each category is split into various classes, largely determined by engine capacity. Points are awarded based on not only category and class finishing positions but also overall finishing positions. Points are also awarded for starting events, with the series decided over seven rallies. After the opening four rounds of this year's Championship, it's extremely tight at the top with one point separating leader Nick Elliott from second placed Richard Hill. Elliott was left playing catch-up after his retirement from round one's Red Kite Stages but since then he has powered his way to the top of the pile in his category 3/ class D5 Escort. Solid results at the following three events, including maximum points hauls at the Mid-Wales and Severn Valley Stages, must make him the favourite for this year's title.

2014 SeASon UpdAte Second placed Hill (category 3/class D5) has scored consistently on each event, including a maximum points haul at the Red Kite Stages, leaving him 16 points clear of third placed Ray Cunningham (category 1/class B2). Tom Coughtrie is fourth ahead of David Stokes and Tomas Davies.

Irish Historic Tarmac Rally Championship The Clonakilty Blackpudding Irish Historic

Tarmac Championship runs alongside most of the 'main' Irish Tarmac Championship events but also features two additional rallies which only the ITC Historic crews contest. The Killarney Historic Rally, held in December, hosts the opening round of the series. This event is perhaps the jewel in the Irish Historic rallying crown, featuring classic Killarney stages such as Moll's Gap, and is well supported by both competitors and spectators. The Rally Isle of Man also hosts a round of the Irish Historic series. The series is split into five categories which run to the same specifications as the WWRS RAC categories 1 to 4 plus category K (or category 5). However, unlike the RAC series, there are no separate class awards within the categories, although competitors may be separated into different classes on events.

2014 SeaSon UpdaTe The Irish Historic Tarmac Championship kicked off with December's Killarney Historic Rally and it was here that Mark Falvey took an early series lead. Victory on the popular event from Denis Moynihan ensured the Escort Mk1 pilot topped the standings over the Christmas period. Ray Cunningham was fourth overall on the event but third placed registered competitor, so he held a top three position after round one. Action resumed at February's Galway International and with neither Falvey nor Moynihan entered in the event, it provided the perfect opportunity for Cunningham to capitalise.

Navigated by Adrian Cusack, they sealed the win, propelling the crew to the top of the Historic standings.

Congratulations to

Nick Elliott & Dave Price on their Severn Valley Win

Only four Historic crews finished the Circuit of Ireland, and none of them were fighting for the overall championship positions so Cunningham maintained his lead over Mark Falvey and Denis Moynihan.

HISTORIC RALLY SPECIALISTS

The battle continued at the Rally of the Lakes, which also hosted a round of the European Historic Rally Championship. And on this occasion, both Falvey and Moynihan returned to do battle along with a host of European crews but series leader Cunningham opted to miss the event.

Falvey and Moynihan both hoped to capitalise but Falvey failed to finish on this occasion. Instead, Denis Moynihan took the win and that was enough to place him at the top of the standings, three points ahead of Cunningham. But with another four rounds remaining, the Championship is still wide open.

Having spent years building and preparing a string of Ford Escorts, Rallysport Development principal Kevin Theaker reckoned he’d taken the Blue Oval’s favourite rally model about as far as it could go. He reasoned that the time was ripe to look at other makes/models, but his ultimate choice needed to be one that had the potential to be an Escort beater. Not easy! Theaker set up Rallysport Development in 2007, based in Malton, North Yorkshire - his hometown. Having spent all his working life in rally engineering the 32-year-old’s company is at the forefront of Escort building and preparation, listing a string of

well-known drivers, including Steve Bannister and Matthew Robinson, amongst it’s clientele. A lot of homework had to be done prior to making a final choice, but after a lengthy process of elimination he concluded that there was only one contender, the Fiat 131 Abarth. It was a proven Escort beater having pacenotes JUly 2014 pacenotes JUNE 2014

been a three times World Rally Championship winner in 1977, 1978 and 1980 in the hands of three different drivers Markku Alen, Timo Salonen and Walter Rohrl. Despite being the bearer of that proud and successful record the 131 had all, but disappeared from the rally scene so Theaker’s chosen route was likely to be anything but easy. You’d probably think that being an Italian car, that’s where you would source almost everything to

pacenotes JUly 2014

move the project forward, but aside from bodyshells you’d be wrong. In fact most of the genuine works parts came from Finland. Theaker discovered that Abarth had sent three or more containers full of parts there in the late seventies in order to support Alen in his Finnish Championship campaign. Amazingly, almost forty years later, many were still there in factory fresh condition. Theaker has also accessed a massive photographic record of the

cars being built from which he has been able to make, or have made, exact replica parts, even down to the dashboard dials and switches. So good was the car that was presented at January’s Autosport Show that when Rohrl saw it he reckoned it was the best he’d ever seen, even better than the original. Theaker said, “He also expressed an interest in driving the car so that’s something we hope will happen in the future.” There are currently three cars in the Rally Sport Develoment

workshops nearing completion, two customer cars, one in gravel specification and the other in tarmac and Theaker’s own tarmac car. It’s the gravel car, owned by Peter Smith, that is likely to be first seen competitively on British soil. Indeed, as this edition of Pacenotes went to press, the aim was that the car would appear on the Nicky Grist Stages, but in the hands of Julian Reynolds as Smith doesn’t plan to rally it himself until next year.

“There’s no issue with it if you ding a quarter, you can just rivet a new panel on whereas with an Escort it will cost you a fortune to fix it and that’s assuming you can find a replacement.”

“It pulls stronger than an Escort, I’ve driven it on narrow bumpy tarmac and it’s just like driving a 3 series BMW whereas the Escort gets a bit twitchy and nervous when you’re flat out the Fiat doesn’t, it just rides the bumps.”

Peter Egerton plans to debut his tarmac version in the autumn. It’s taken Theaker and his small team two years to reach this point, but with the second customer car likely to make an early appearance on the stages they’re geared up to build more. The company has a stock of bodyshells and can make

pacenotes JUly 2014

or source everything required to build both gravel and tarmac cars that are fully compliant with FIA historic regulations. The 131 has steel monocoque, aluminium doors with glass-fibre bonnet, boot lid, front and rear panels and wings all round. Side and rear windows are all Perspex. Theaker said, “There’s no issue with it if you ding a quarter, you can just rivet a new panel on whereas with an Escort it will cost you a fortune to fix it and that’s assuming you can find a replacement.” The 131 sports a Rally Development built fourcylinder in-line 16 valve 1995cc engine and five speed dog box with a ZF limited slip differential

and Bilstein independent rear suspension. It’s a set up that Theaker reckons is another plus as he added, “It pulls stronger than an Escort. I’ve driven it on narrow bumpy tarmac and it’s just like driving a 3 series BMW whereas the Escort gets a bit twitchy and nervous when you’re flat out the Fiat doesn’t, it just rides the bumps.” The finished cars are like something from a time warp, a testimony to Theaker’s attention to detail. He said, “Absolutely everything is as the original, even the seats, as are all the fittings on the oil cooler and tank, the wheel studs and spacers. Everything is

100% original specification, mostly made here in the UK apart from the steel donor shells. And that’s another thing, where can you get an Escort shell nowadays while no one else is looking for Fiats 131s?” You have to look closely to spot the differences between the tarmac and gravel cars pictured here. Aside from the stance of the two examples the only real difference is the bigger arches on the tarmac version that allow 10” front and 11” rear wide tyres. But whichever car you look at, from whatever angle, they look absolutely stunning! (Special thanks to the Yorkshire Arboretum for the use of the P photoshoot location.)

Rallysport Development (RSD) is an established and successful historic rally car preparation and fabrication business, based in an area of North Yorkshire which has been a hotbed of national and international motorsport activity for decades. Driven by a need to boost variety within the ranks of a thriving historic rally scene, Rallysport Development are pleased to announce the arrival of its brand new 131

Fiat 131 Abarth

In 1974 Fiat produced the MiraďŹ ori 131. In 1976, 500 of these cars were sent to the Italian tuning company Abarth to be turned into homologation specials that would pave the way for the GRP4 Fiat Abarth 131. These cars went on to win no less than 3 WRC titles and would prove to be a rival to the mk2 Escorts of the time. With this in mind RSD can now offer fully prepared GRP4 131's ready to rally and supported by an off-theshelf spares service.

Rallye, a period perfect replica of Fiat's former 3 times WRC winning icon. RSD are committed to make the 131 Rallye more than just a presence on forthcoming events. For those seeking success, an RSD prepared 131 will be a competitive and viable alternative to the dominant Ford Mk2 Escorts. RSD can now supply turn keys and fully prepared cars backed up by an off the shelf parts service.

Ford Escort Mk I

Ford Escort Mk II

From its introduction to the world in 1967, the mk1 Escort would go on to change the future of rallying for decades to come.

In 1975 Ford launched the mk2 Escort which went on to become one of the most successful rally cars of all time.

The Ford works team developed the Lotus Twin Cam, the RS1600 and the RS2000. RSD have undertaken the restoration and manufacture of period perfect rally examples of many of these original cars which are now either in enthusiasts' collections or out on the stages.

The team at RSD have a collective experience of over 60 years in the build, preparation and engineering of the ford Escort. We have been lucky enough to build cars for the likes of Peter Smith, Nick Elliott, Matthew Robinson and the legendary Steve Bannister. RSD are arguably one of the leading authorities on historic Escort build and preparation.

Winning the Mourne Rally has Derek McGarrity and James McKee edging closer to a record fifth Northern Ireland Rally Championship title – currently 20 points clear of Alan Carmichael. McGarrity switched to a

Group A Mitsubishi Lancer for the Newry-based event, and while down on his usual WRC power he didn’t shy away while getting to grips with his third car in four rallies. He beat early leader David Armstrong by nine seconds despite

was lost during the third pass of the Gullion stages. Armstrong and Newry club member Paul Mulholland had the upper hand on the early passes of the 6.2-mile Big Gullion stage. But McGarrity had the short and twisty Camlough and Wee Gullion

Colin Price said the day “had ups and downs” on the way to winning C3 in an Opel Corsa GSi including a ten second time penalty for a late stage arrival. The Bushmills and Donegal team had briefly held second, but were 3.2 seconds from matching Armstrong at the finish. Third in the rally is enough to sit third in the championship race over the summer break. Cochrane leads the two-wheel-drive category by 13 points from Armstrong.

Ryan Bradley and Gerard Mullan nipped ahead of Philip Hamilton and Damian Kelly on the final stage to win C4 by 4.9 seconds in an Escort MK2. The category winners also secured 21st overall. Despite mechanical issues Robert Irwin and Neil Ervine finished third in their Toyota Corolla, but the pair were one minute seven

seconds down on the Citroen C2 ahead. Irwin leads the class on points with a three-point advantage over Hamilton.

Damian Toner and Paddy McCague won C5 by three seconds on the way to seventh overall in their Talbot Sunbeam.

Pre-event Alan Carmichael said McGarrity was “certainly beatable” but he was still learning new techniques with this season’s car on an event he had little experience of. In his championship quest with Ivor Lamont he brought the Mini WRC to fourth, almost a minute from the podium after a 20 second penalty for arriving late to the final stage was enforced. There was encouraging stage times however, getting as close as one second to the fastest stage time - set by McGarrity - on the eighth test. Alan Nesbitt’s appearances on the stages have become rare, but his local event is among his favourites to enter. It was the Talbot Sunbeam of Toner that held the early advantage, but McGrady fought back in the afternoon to finish sixth. Just three seconds from the ultra-close battle ahead were William and Philip Armstrong, who secured eighth in their Pintopowered Escort Mk2. Shane Cullen and Russell Harold were ninth, 1.7 seconds behind. Camillus Bradley was eighth before he left the road on the first pass over the Big Gullion stage. British championship runner Calvin Beattie (Ford Fiesta) had

an early exit at his local rally. The Forkhill driver left the road on stage two. The bridge on Big Gullion produced another victim this year. Andrew Patterson put his G3-version Escort off the road, but nearby spectators got him back on course again to finish 31st. JT Warnock was working his way up the leader board in his Escort Mk2 before mechanical issues kicked in on stage ten. The championship will take a break until the two day Ulster Rally in Enniskillen starting on August 15. The gravel Lakeland Stages is scheduled to return on September 6 after it was cancelled last year due to a lack of entries.

damage forced an early retirement. Dual Honda Civic drivers Gary and Shane Cassidy made it a one-two for the Monaghan team in C4. The pair also took 11th and 12th respectively with 2.8 seconds separating the pair. Calvin Beattie finished third in his Ford Fiesta 4.8 seconds from second - in the thirty strong class.

WINNER: HUGH mCEVOY

On his first Nutts Corner visit Hugh McEvoy won by 16.1 seconds in a racespecification Lotus from Tony Greenan’s BMW.

Crumlin’s William McClurkin didn’t have to travel far in his Ford Escort Mk2 to take the early lead of C5. At the finish though, it was Daniel Campbell’s Toyota Starlet that took the class victory by four seconds. Jamie Grant followed McClurkin, 3.9 seconds behind, in another MK2-version Escort hampered with mechanical issues.

Greenan was fastest on the first

two runs, while McEvoy got to grips with the twisty nature of the County Antrim race circuit. Over the remaining six stages McEvoy had the upper hand on Greenan, with his fastest time of the day on the seventh attempt of the threelap stage when he went 4.2 seconds faster than Greenan’s fastest pass. Seamus Donnelly was four seconds off the pace ahead, but he was first of the buggies in his newly purchased RM Racing example. Rage buggy driver Brendan McShane was fourth, 4.9 seconds from Donnelly, but he secured the position by 3.5 seconds. Castleblaney’s Sean Coleman reverted to old tyres to place his buggy fifth, 0.5 seconds ahead of the next car finisher – Stephen McElvine in a Mitsubishi Lancer. Sean Cassey was seventh in another buggy, 0.8 seconds ahead of Paul Garry’s JB example. The final few places inside the first ten finishers were closely

The gap at the finish was 10.6 seconds. Cavan’s Nathan McQuade finished third, 2.2 seconds from McKenna.

JONNY VAUGHAN

William Graham was fastest of the three C2 entries. The Vauxhall Corsa driver took the top spot in the category by 22.4 seconds with six fastest stage times in class. Mark McGaughy was the early leader, but dropped to second when Graham upped the pace in the afternoon. Darren McGaughy retired after stage four. Jonny Vaughan was fastest in C3 by 50.3 seconds and 11th overall using his sprint-specification Mini. Jonny Armstrong was second in his Vauxhall Corsa, which was later advertised for sale with plans of car progression. Rory Maguire got third, but only just. The position was decided by just 0.1 seconds, and it was David Stevenson who chased Maguire to the line in a Vauxhall Corsa. Garth Neill returned to the class in his Vauxhall Nova, but head gasket

Event winner Hugh McEvoy had a comfortable win in C6. The Lotus man beat Keith McClelland by 34.3 seconds. John Bradley steered his Ford Escort Mk2 to third, 11.9 seconds down on McClelland’s pace despite getting held up by a car at a tight hairpin. Seamus Donnelly won C7 for buggies and Tony Greenan won C8. See main report for more. Tommy McCullough, who was driving a Nissan Micra, won C10 for 1000cc cars. The winning margin over Ballie McClinton was 47.5 seconds. The next RSA event will be at Nutts Corner on Saturday July 19, followed by the Irish GP - which will run over only one day this year - at County Kildare’s Mondello Park on Saturday August 23. P

Wicklow Win goes Murphy’s Way…

winners: Owen Murphy/JaMes O’Brien

The third round of the 2014 Valvoline National Forest Rally Championship took place in Glendalough, County Wicklow. Following an eight year sabbatical the championship returned to Wicklow with a compact mini stage format of four stages repeated twice. A relatively late entry from Cork crew Owen Murphy and James O’Brien added to the excitement in the build up to the rally and the duo weren’t to disappoint. Leading the rally from start-to-

finish Murphy and O’Brien, in their Mitsubishi Evo IX, had come with the firm intention of being the first names on the ALMC perpetual trophy and to add a back-to-back win after victory at the Moonraker Rally - also a round of the Valvoline National Forest Rally Championship. The first 11km Glenmalure stage took its toll on front-runners Desi Henry and Liam Moynihan.

The pair beached their Evo 9 at a chicane - abruptly ending their rally. Andrew Purcell and Stephen Quinn were also sidelined as their Evo 6 clipped a rock and broke a ball joint. Owen Murphy set fastest time, two seconds up on Pat O’Connell (both in Lancers). Brendan Cumiskey appeared with a recently acquired Impreza S8, but lost a minute due to a stall on the start line and later retired

with engine failure. There was further attrition at the start of stage 2, Aughavannagh, when Pat O’Connell’s Evo would not start. Even with these top retirements there was a host of crews still capable of putting it up to Murphy. Monaghan’s Josh Moffett, with Jason McKenna, on the notes were to make sure the Cork men weren’t going to feel secure in victory.

Enda McNulty and Paul Sheridan were also in the hunt despite transmission woes. And as the day progressed the top three places were to remain in that order. Moffett did scrub considerable time off on the second loop of stages and McNulty took a fastest time on stage three, but out front Murphy kept up enough pace with a final stage time that was worthy of a second glance. Peter McCullagh felt slow and was happy to hold fourth. Michael Carbin (Evo 4) set a blistering time through Aughavannagh to climb

to fifth. The 2WD competition was fierce as Micky Conlon/ Ciaran McPhillips tied with David Crossen/ Pamela Irwin. Conlon set the pace on stage one – 9 seconds up on Crossen, who responded by taking 9 seconds back on the following stage. John Reid and Enda Shields retired having hit the same rock as Andrew Purcell on stage one fracturing a wishbone on their Toyota Corolla WRC. David Crossen was two seconds up on Micky Conlon to hold the 2WD advantage. Conor McCarthy and Dan Donavan (Civic) held a 30 second lead in the class for junior drivers and were just outside the top twenty. Owen Murphy/ James O’Brien (Evo 9) set a scorching time on the final stage – the repeat of Aughavannagh stopping the clocks with a 6.58. The pair were the only crew to do the iconic 11km stage

in less than seven minutes to claim their second victory in a row and put them in a very strong position in the championship standings. Josh Moffett/ Jason McKenna (Evo 9) also went on a big charge and was 16 seconds quicker than their first run. The Monaghan pair trailed the winners by seven seconds after the four challenging stages and currently head the championship by virtue of their solid performances in all three rounds to date. Enda McNulty/ Paul Sheridan (Subaru Impreza) completed the podium having shown good pace on this short compact event. Peter McCullagh and Tommy Cuddihy (Evo 9) had their best result in recent times taking fourth. Arguably the drive of the day was from Michael Carbin/ Stephen Thornton climbing to fifth overall with the faithful Evo 4 – this was a remarkable result from the Monaghan pair. Daniel Cronin and Shane Buckley (Evo 9) did well to take sixth and appear to be getting to grips with their Mitsubishi. Lucey brothers Ger and James (Evo 8) took seventh after a cautions start. Marty Mckenna and Damien Fleming had a fraught start with overshoots and overdriving, but settled on the repeat stages with better times bringing the Impreza

David Crossen and Pamela Irwin made a memorable maiden trip to the forests claiming tenth overall and best two-wheel-drive with their duratec-powered Mk2. Conor McCarthy and Dan Donovan completed a hat trick of junior category wins. They again took the laurels in Wicklow to endorse their category lead in the championship. Notable retirements included Trevor Culbert and Ray Fitzpatrick. The pair had break pipe issues on stage four. The rally saw event local crew of James/ Sean Brunton and Niamh/ Aisling Bruton both retiring with mechanical failure. ALMC were delighted to see club members Martin McKeown and Declan Ryan taking the Class 1 win in their first forestry outing together. Clerk of the course John Carroll said, “I would like to thank all those who supported the ALMC Wicklow Rally, ensuring a successful return of forest rallying to County Wicklow after an eight year absence.”

Alright for White in the End… Keith White and Damian McCann led from start-to-finish to win by 2.4 seconds, following a scare at the final corner while under pressure from former winner Wesley Patterson. 2nD: WEslEy PATTErson/BEn TEggArT

White was fastest on the opening 3.2-mile stage by 2.9 seconds in his Mk1-version Escort, but lost the majority of his lead on stage two when he stalled at a hairpin. Patterson, co-driven by Ben Teggart, brought the gap down to 0.4 seconds before the route was reversed for stages three and four. White added to his lead on the middle loop to hold a 6.1 second advantage with two stages remaining. But Patterson slashed the Crumlin man’s lead to 1.2 seconds with a final 2.9-mile stage remaining where he, similar to White, touched a chicane after a fast straight less than a mile from the finish. The runner-up spot was the result. Patterson said, “Second was a fair result. Too many small

Despite a spin on stage three father and son duo Brian and Jason Black led C1 from start-to-finish in their Toyota Starlet to win by 40.9 seconds. Michael and Ryan Brennan placed their Vauxhall Nova into second, over two minutes ahead of the final class finishers, Keith Stewart and Stephen Peoples who were Nissan Micra mounted. Third was briefly held by David and William Armstrong, but they finished 11.4 seconds down in fourth. Shane Cullen and Arnold Lutton put a late package together to take fifth in a very sideways Mk2. The result came after a jump from ninth on the opening stage

to their final position on stage two. Just three seconds would have matched the Armstrong team. Jim McKenna and Graham Kelly recovered from a spin in a car park section on stage four to finish sixth, 8.3 seconds behind Cullen but 14.4 seconds up on Raymond and Mark Johnston’s RS1800 historic-specification Escort. Declan Smith and Cathal Hughes were next after they continued to climb the leader board as the stages past. The pair just ran out of miles though, 2.2 seconds from finishing seventh. Andrew McCormick and Andrew Bushe stopped the run of Fords in a Vauxhall Chevette with ninth despite breaking a half-shaft in the morning. The next three crews - each

faster in their Vauxhall Nova. McClean had a moment that seen him going through a wire fence, and at the finish Spiers held the advantage by nine seconds in his Peugeot 106 GTi. Camillus Murray and Patrick Kelly finished third using a Ford Escort Mk2, 12.9 seconds back from McClean. Alan Atcheson and Mickey Conlon clinched C5 by three seconds despite Paul Killen and Martin Lynch’s final push to decrease the gap on the final two stages. Killen secured his place by 12.1 seconds from William and Louise McClurkin in a class

dominated by the Mk2-version Escort. Team McClurkin were fastest in class on stage two, and the times show they were on for a class win until an off on the final stage. Mervyn Wedlock and Damian McCabe were fastest in C6 on their way to third overall. Shane Cullen and Arnold Lutton were next in the class race, 14.4 seconds from Wedlock. Declan Smith and Cathal Hughes were third fastest in the biggest class of the day with 16 starters. Rally winners Keith White and Damian McCann were in C7 as was second-placed Wesley Patterson

Alan Atcheson and Mickey Conlon were eleventh. Paul Killen and Martin Lynch settled for twelfth. Of the 57 starters only three crews didn’t complete the entire route. Fiesta series racing driver James Turkington had mechanical issues on stage one, but rejoined the rally for stages four to six. David Kane went over the time limit on stage one and rejoined the rally for stage two. But Downpatrick’s Sean McNabb had a worse day when he put his Vauxhall Chevette off the road on stage two. Chris Brennan and Patrick Lyons had a lucky escape on the penultimate corner when they put their Honda Civic onto a grass bank. The pair continued to finish 45th. P

Historic cars formed C8 where Raymond and Mark Johnston won the category by almost a minute 59.9 seconds to be exact - in a FIAspecification Ford Escort RS1800. In 1964 a group of car enthusiasts who competed around the country gathered together to form their own Motor club in the County Cavan. The Farnham Arms Hotel was the setting for the very first meeting on a warm July evening. The aim was to provide local competitors with fun and friendly events where they could harness their love of cars in a competitive setting. In the early days the club would run autotests in the Egg Market situated in the middle of Cavan Town itself and these would be mainly entered by drivers in the then machine to have, namely the Mini Cooper. The events were a breeding ground for many a local talent to blossom and it wasn’t long before the club were expanding its focus to bigger events. Night navigation trials would be another popular event that would be the perfect excuse for the local competitors to go out and have a run around the surrounding areas. Maurice Jackson would be on hand at the finish to present the prize of ten pounds to the winner at that time,

CAVAN MC CELEBRATES 50 yEARS Willie Mc Cormack who is now the club president was in his Mini Cooper. In 1966 the club took the next step in its progression and run a stage rally. Thirty-four crews lined up to compete in the lanes around the back of the Farnham Estate. The club moved onwards and upwards successfully run events over the years before their biggest challenge presented itself. In 1983 the County Cavan Motor Club held its first stages rally which was won by Banbridge ace Kenny Mc Kinstry in his RS1800 Escort. Kenny would go on to win a number of times later in the ‘80s and ‘90s in a mixture of machinery. The big win for the home fans came in 1989 when Cootehill man Mervyn Wedlock navigated Norman Armstrong to the win in his Mk2 Escort. The event ran out of Cootehill which made the

win all the more memorable. Unfortunately that was the first and last time since that a Cavan man has won the rally. In 1987 the rally didn’t run due to an insurance crisis. The crisis would pave the way for the forward thinking club to set up one of the premier autocross facilities in the country. The club organised a land fund account using the proceeds from numerous draws - the first of which was held on August 27 1987. The prize was between a new Lada Car or £5,000 in lieu of it. We’ll let you guess which the winner took! Another draw took place with the first prize being a seat with Kenny Mc Kinstry in the 1988 event. After a few years of fund raising the club could shop around for suitable sites and with that they selected the 14 acre site at the disused Hutt Cross Quarry

With the club moving through the years the members have gone from strength to strength in running and competing in events throughout the year and the country. A new breed of member has taken their places in the club and with that a more modern hint to the tried and tested formula that has left the club as a very successful and sure footed example. This year, as the club celebrates its 50th year in existence, it sees a number of new ideas coming up through the ranks to sit in with the old reliable ways. This year will see the club run its first endurance trial coupled with the usual autocross and night navigation rounds, not forgetting the Cavan Stages Rally that has taken place. It is quite the packed schedule for the 50th anniversary celebrations which will culminate at a gala dinner on November 29 where past winners and big stars will join the club to help celebrate the big year. With the addition of the club’s new interactive website fans can keep up-to-date with all the latest news and results of the club members in action. This was demonstrated during this year’s stages rally with the a live section on the site which would harvest all the social media outlets and results service to give the fan the very latest results and news. To try it out yourself go to: www. cavanmotorclub.com to see what all the fuss is about. So, here’s to another 50 years of the County Cavan Motor Club! P
