Hello Readers, Welcome to our first issue of 2024! We hope you’ve had a good start to the New Year and your children have re-settled into daily school life. Winter is now upon us, offering up its bare trees and frosty weather, but that’s no reason to hunker down at home all season! Instead of waiting for the warmer weather to return, pull on your winter woollies and take advantage of the change of season by creating a list of cold-weather activities and fun things to do. Kids (and parents) will benefit from a fun and active half term break, so we’ve featured some fabulous places and family entertainment throughout this issue. Don’t worry – lots of options are undercover so you can have a brilliant time and dodge the wind and rain if needed! We’ve also included some party planning ideas – children’s birthdays come around fast and there’s always lots to organise, so why not enlist the help of some tried and tested party specialists? They will take care of the entertainment so you can have some fun too! We’ll be back again in March, when the warmer days are on the horizon, with lots of exciting Easter news and local events for your calendars. BEGINNERS THROUGH TO BLACK BELTS – WELCOMED, INSPIRED AND TAUGHT AT TISKA KARATE TISKA (Traditional International Shotokan Karate Association) heads up clubs nationally and internationally. TISKA was established by Gursharan Sahota, the Chief Instructor (8th Dan) and founder who was delighted to celebrate TISKA’S 30th Anniversary last year. He achieved the high grade of 8th Dan in 2015 and was asked to accept the title of “Shihan” meaning Master Instructor. This title is given as a sign of respect for the person named. Shihan currently teaches over 40 classes per week to students in Beaconsfield, Chalfont St Peter, Amersham, Berkhamsted, Dunstable, Maidenhead, Northamptonshire and Leicestershire and has bought many hundreds of students to Black belt standard and beyond. Karate is the ultimate in self-defence and promotes fitness, self-awareness, confidence, etiquette, respect and self-discipline. The Living Rainforest is a great place to visit. There are three zones that are dedicated to different types of rainforests, and they all have great rainforest trees and massive-leaved plants. It’s warm and humid as you would expect from a rainforest, but the real pleasure is seeing the variety of animals, some of which free range throughout the largest rainforest zone! You can see giant stick insects, hissing cockroaches, goeldi monkeys, armadillo, caiman, huge fish, a large whistling Curassow and much more. Then it’s time to relax in the café with a lovely coffee or a quick bite of lunch for the family. This February half term they will have free guided tours, talks, trails, and crafts – truly something for everyone! This February half term, The Lexicon will host a week full of laughs, fun, mischief, and creativity featuring fun-filled characters from the iconic Beano comic. Brighten up half term with a visit to Squire’s, so young visitors can get creative! They will be hosting their Create & Grow February half term fun from the 12th-16th February, 9.30am-1pm, with their popular ‘Paint a Bird-shaped Flowerpot’ activity as well as a ‘Wild Bird Treasure Hunt’. Little ones are invited to go along and use their painting skills to create a unique bird-shaped ceramic flowerpot (plant not included), which can be taken home and put in pride of place on the windowsill to bring some cheery colour to their bedroom. Booking is essential and can be done online and in-store. The Wild Bird Treasure Hunt is free and there is no need to book, simply turn up on the day. Children will follow a paper trail of birds around the centre to help find the magic word, with five bird images to find, to receive a free sticker. Available at all centres, excluding Chertsey. The sessions last between 20-30 minutes, and visitors are asked to arrive five minutes before their booked slot. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times and the activities are available while stocks last. Designs may vary and tickets are nontransferrable or refundable. TACKLING STIGMA

Crosfields School has welcomed its first Mental Health Practitioner. The best way to combat the pressures of the modern world is to learn how to develop skills that will allow us to cope with these pressures. Crosfields has welcomed Mrs Yadava, its first Mental Health Practitioner (MHP), to support pupils with their wellbeing and to further develop wellbeing services at the school. Schoolbased mental health support can have a significant positive impact on pupils and supporting this is vital in helping each individual to thrive. Mrs Yadava works primarily with pupils on a one-to-one basis in a designated space within the medical centre, helping them to understand their emotions and feelings. She helps pupils develop coping skills that will enable them to deal with any situations in a healthy way. Teachers and parents are also supported and guided through this to ensure a 360 degree approach. Group sessions are held daily where all pupils have a chance to explore topics such as the ‘healthy use of social media’ or ‘positive relationships’. MUSICAL MOMENTS for children and families

Primary Times considers the important role that music can play in everyday life Music is universal in its ability to bring people together and it’s also an important form of creative expression. World Music Therapy Day takes place on the 1st March, celebrating the healing power of music worldwide. Music therapy itself aims to support all ages with their development and wellbeing, physically, socially and emotionally.

Seeking to reduce stress and improve overall mood and self-expression, this can involve a range of activities such as singing, listening, songwriting and playing instruments. With this upcoming event in mind, Primary Times takes a closer look at some of the benefits of children learning to play a musical instrument, and at the importance of a musical education and trying to incorporate music into family life.

Music in Key Stages 1 and 2 The curriculum typically focuses on developing pupils’ creativity, hoping to ignite a passion for music that they will want to continue pursuing. Generally, children are encouraged to engage with a range of musical styles and genres, to perform and compose individually or in groups, and to have the opportunity to learn how to play an instrument. Through the school years, it’s hoped that pupils can learn to appreciate and understand the history and traditions behind some great composers and pieces of music as well.

Tips for a more musical household There are lots of fabulous ways that you can get into music as a family at home and out and about more widely. Why not host a dance party or introduce family karaoke sessions now and then for fun and to bond over your favourite songs? At birthday events or get-togethers, you could start a tradition by making a family playlist for your nearest and dearest to look forward to. Go and see a show or a musical theatre performance together as an exciting family outing and to ignite your child’s interest. Have a go at a music-themed family workshop at your local library, museum or community centre to develop your skills further. If you’d like to focus on music education for your child, it’s worth looking into local music lessons or tutors near you that are experienced in teaching singing lessons and an array of musical instruments. When did your curiosity about the world of science begin? At around the age of three. Like most children, I was always interested to find out how things work, what’s inside the body for example and what’s up there in the sky. It’s a natural human wish to want to understand these things better. What do you most enjoy about writing books for young readers? Writing for primary school children makes you look at things with a much greater clarity about what really is important, or interesting, 2 or of value. 2

Which section of ‘The Story of Science’ do you think children find the most exciting? I test these things out beforehand by visiting schools and speaking with my own grandchildren as well. You can’t ever really predict what will interest children the most. Sometimes it’s the experiments or the things that are really surprising or dangerous!

What’s your personal favourite topic or discovery discussed in this book? The history of navigation and exploration is extraordinary. Space travel and satellites have made a massive difference to our understanding of the universe. I’ve also tried to help young people understand the ethical and really important human issues that are raised by science and technology and address that message in this book. Is ‘The Story of Science’ a book that children and families can enjoy reading together? Yes, exactly, I certainly wrote it with this in mind. I think it’s a book that adults can read with their kids and the kids can then go off and look at it further. I do also hope that the book will be sufficiently intriguing for them to refer back to later on.

Do you think it’s important to nurture this interest in science and technology in the younger generation today? It’s essential. Scientific developments and technology dominate our lives. To keep up, we have to learn and I think children do that. Encouraging children to learn about science can help them to actually understand what’s going on and then make wiser life decisions in future. Hopefully books like this might include a bit of wisdom, I think that’s important.

Are there any future books in the works currently, or do you have any new ideas in the pipeline to look out for? I do have some ideas in my mind but I won’t say too much just yet. If I were to do another book, I would maybe aim for the GCSE age range. There’s no shortage of ideas, or topics, because science is expanding all the time!
