Maiden Erlegh School – a school of opportunity, diversity and success for all Maiden Erlegh School is highly regarded in the community and parents who choose the school are confident that their children will be joining a safe, happy and caring community where, despite the size, the school gets to know each student as an individual and where achievement is consistently well above national averages.
Win wildflower seeds to create a home for bees in your garden If your children love bees, then here’s a challenge to give them a buzz! Linden Homes is inviting youngsters to enter its bumblebee drawing competition for a chance to win wildflower seeds for their garden. The housebuilding brand, which is part of Vistry Group, is asking children to send in their drawings of the cute insects via social media. Entrants who submit their drawings before Thursday 16th June will receive a packet of seeds to help them attract bees to their garden and allow them to pollinate, moving pollen from one plant to another, fertilising the plants so they can produce fruit, vegetables, and seeds. The competition follows the launch of Linden Homes’ Building for Bees initiative, which has seen the brand team up with the Bumblebee Conservation Trust to help build homes for bees as well as people. They are giving away packets of wildflower seeds to everyone who buys a new home with them in the Vistry Thames Valley region.
As well as offering students a broad and balanced curriculum, the school also offers a wide range of extracurricular activities. These activities give students the opportunity to develop new interests, skills, and responsibilities; visit new places and participate in a range of cultural and sporting experiences. All members of the school community are challenged and supported to make continuous improvement. Alongside this, success and achievement are celebrated for individual and collective accomplishments. There is an opportunity to visit the school at their Open Event on 29 June 2022, details can be found on their website. W: www.maidenerleghschool.co.uk
Buzzing artists should send their drawings to @lindenhomesuk on Instagram and @Lindenhomes on Facebook and use the hashtag #LoveBeesGrowSeeds

Restore your child’s self-confidence with Bedwetting Solutions The team at Bedwetting Solutions never underestimate the impact bedwetting has on the whole family. Children/teenagers feel ashamed, parents feel they are doing something wrong. The majority of bedwetting is hereditary and can be sorted with the right help and support. They hire out medical grade enuresis alarms for children aged 6+ , along with a full support package for parents to guide them through the training. We have an NHS enuresis nurse on our team in an advisory capacity answering questions that may arise. This month’s high five goes to Joshua (name changed) aged 9, who has a diagnosed overactive bladder and takes medication for this. Even with this condition, he has successfully completed the programme in little over 6 weeks. They class 21 consecutive dry nights as a success, so the alarm was only sounding intermittently for the first 3 weeks. He is looking forward to not taking plastic protective sheets on holiday! To celebrate the start of spring they are offering Primary Times readers a 15% discount, please call them for confidential no obligation advice. LIFE-CHANGING LIBRARIES WITH
CRESSIDA
COWELL
Primary Times chats with Cressida Cowell, best selling author of How To Train Your Dragon, about her Life-changing Libraries campaign and the effect it has had on children so far. vote – all irrespective of background. The more a child reads, the greater the benefits. And that is where libraries come in. Libraries are where the magic happens. They are like sweetshops where all the sweets are FREE. When I was a child in the 1970’s, we went to the public library once a week, that was the norm back then, and I must have read practically every single book in that entire library. It allows a child to experiment, find out what they like. I was convinced then about the importance of libraries – both local and school libraries – and I’m more convinced than ever of their magical power to create life-long readers.
Cressida Cowell, the Waterstones Children’s Laureate 2019-2022 and best selling author, launched the Life-changing Libraries campaign last year. The campaign aims to place primary school libraries at the heart of the governements yearly investments aﬞer it highlighted a severe long-term underfunding. Primary Times caught up with Cressida to understand the importance of libraries, and to see the impact that the campaign has made so far. “The benefits of engaging with books and becoming a reader for pleasure are life-changing,” Cressida explains. “Decades of research show a reader for pleasure is more likely to be happier, healthier, to do beמּer at school, and to
“The project spotlights the four pillars of a successful school library – space, book provision, expertise, and wholeschool and parent involvement – through the creation of ‘pilot’ libraries in six very different primary schools. It has been extraordinary to see how these beautiful new spaces, since opening last June, have become the beating heart of these six schools, encouraging the development of wellbeing, empathy, learning and a whole school reading culture. “What has been clear from the reaction to the campaign is that people assume that all primary schools have libraries, and that those are well-stocked and resourced. But, this is simply not the case. One in eight primary
schools has no library provision. Does yours? I’ve been struck by how many people are surprised that we even need to make this ask. Oﬞen, people know that reading for pleasure is important, but don’t know quite how life-changing it is. Reading opens up a world of new possibilities for children and develops aspiration, with research showing that it can drive social mobility and mitigate the effect of social inequality. But, how can a child become a reader for pleasure if their parents or carers cannot afford books, and their primary school has no library, or that library is woefully insufficient? “We are nearing the end of these year-long pilots and will be sharing our findings in June – but the words of a young boy in Griffin primary school, where we introduced a new ‘Lifechanging Library’ keep returning to me. When asked, ‘What does this library mean to you?’, his reply was: ‘Well, it means I don’t have to read the same book, again and again and again.’”
