LOCAL NEWS FROM THE BERKSHIRE AREA

GET YOUR LITTLE ONE VACCINATED THIS AUTUMN: GET WINTER STRONG

NHS services across Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire West are sending out invitations encouraging parents and carers to book a flu vaccination for their two and three olds.

For these young children, the vaccine is a quick and painless spray up the nose which helps protect them against the illness. Flu in children can cause fever, stuffy nose, dry cough, sore throat, aching muscles and joints, and extreme tiredness – this can last several days or more.

In more serious cases, flu can also result in some children getting a very high fever, without the usual flu symptoms, and they may need to go to hospital for treatment. Serious complications of flu include a painful ear infection, acute bronchitis, and lung disease, including pneumonia and bronchiolitis.

Last year 6,000 under-fives ended up in hospital due to flu; however, it’s reassuring to know that the flu vaccine reduces a child’s chance of needing hospital care by around two thirds. The nasal spray flu vaccine is free on the NHS for children aged two or three years on 31st August 2023 – (born between 1st September 2019 and 31st August 2021).

In addition, school aged children will be able to get the flu vaccine at school or at community clinics which should help to keep your family ‘winter strong’. When you receive your child’s invitation by letter or text from the NHS, book their flu vaccination at their GP surgery as soon as possible. Find out more: nhs.uk/ child flu

INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE DEVELOPS EXCEPTIONALLY WELL-ROUNDED STUDENTS

St George’s School Windsor, one of the oldest schools in the UK, is now officially also one of the most forward looking, having become the first standalone prep school in the UK authorised to deliver the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme.

A pioneering and rigorous approach, the International Baccalaureate teaches fundamental study skills in addition to broad subject knowledge, encouraging children to take ownership of their learning and develop a range of competencies anticipated to be in high demand in the workplaces of tomorrow.

“The IB develops exceptionally well-rounded students who understand the relevance of what they are learning to the real world and will be able to adapt to a rapidly evolving and increasingly interconnected future,” confirmed Emma Adriano, Deputy Head at St George’s, who spearheaded the curriculum roll out at the school. “Fundamentally, alongside imparting knowledge, the curriculum teaches not what to think, but how to learn.” W: www.stgwindsor.org

Children embrace the art of what is possible creating live digital productions such as Mary Poppins. They experiment with different methods to create green screen visual effects such as Mary sliding up the banister or flying through the sky! Digital broadcasting brings life skills, relatability, and much joy, in addition to creating special memories for family around the world. W: www.uptonhouse.org.uk
