A FARMHOUSE TO REMEMBER From Lincoln Logs to lumber and steel, a father and a daughter brought a dream into fruition, by teaming up and designing their first home together.

This modern farmhouse, designed by father/daughter duo Patrick Cunningham and Brieanna Cunningham of C&C Partners Design-Build, was their first team effort in 2018. It began as a remodel and quickly turned into a brand-new home. Transformed by traditional elements such as dormers, eave outlookers, metal roofs and various style sidings, the home boasts modern details such as slim, metal-clad windows, a grand floating staircase and an open-concept great room. Founded in 1987 by brothers Patrick Cunningham, AIA, and Michael Cunningham, GC, the 18 person in-house C&C Design Build team includes Patrick’s daughter Brieanna Cunningham, associate AIA, and Michael’s son Liam Cunningham, assistant construction manager. C&C Partners Design-Build is the preferred all-inclusive architectural and construction firm for custom homes in Los Angeles, including the Southbay to the Westside We take an ethical approach to creating something extraordinary: your dream custom home. 508 N PCH, Redondo Beach CA 90277 | 310-322-0803 | candcpartners.com

professional surfers. But it’s not just the competition that drives Jonny, Cooper and Alex. It’s also a shared love and passion for the ocean. Even when the surf doesn’t cooperate, you’ll find them on the water—likely on a boat fishing somewhere between Manhattan Beach and Palos Verdes. Achieving status as a top surfer is no easy feat. True excellence not only requires natural talent but time and dedication to develop the necessary skills and techniques to compete at a professional level. And it’s as much mental as it is physical. The unpredictable nature of surf, coupled with the pressures of competition, can take a toll. These young surfers are learning to navigate every aspect of the sport early in their journeys, building endurance and determination along the way. South Bay Boardriders Club (SBBC) figures significantly in their early development. Founded in 2009 by a group of locals, SBBC’s mission celebrates the rich surfing culture of the area and introduces families and youth to ocean activities. SBBC provides a platform for serious athletes to compete and improve their skills while fostering a sense of community. Matt Walls, codirector and founding member, has witnessed Jonny, Cooper and Alex grow from little groms to capable competitors. As a former competitive surfer himself, Matt knows the path well. “One of our favorite events is called the Grom-ORama,” he shares. “It’s a free event for about 50 kids. They come down, surf and get prizes. All the sponsors come from the South Bay: Spyder, ET, Jack’s, Dive N’ Surf, Watermans, Wave Rave, El Porto and other local businesses. The first contest of the season starts in December and continues through May, taking place monthly on local beaches from Torrance to El Segundo. We decided it would only be fair to surf in different spots to avoid a home-court advantage. So if you win the season, you’re theoretically the king of the South Bay.” Kai Kushner is another young local making a name for himself in the surf world. Not only an inspiration to Jonny, Cooper and Alex, he’s become a mentor as well. Kai is one of the few young surfers making it to the next level. He also started with SBBC.

Whenever our clients experience change, it affects how and where they live, and we are there to support them.” Rob agrees: “Working in real estate affords us the privilege of being a part of our clients’ lives. It is the depth of our relationships that is most meaningful.” The group, assisted by director of operations Rose Gavagan, stays abreast of local market trends and off-market opportunities. As Darin poignantly observes, “The last couple years brought extreme change to the South Bay real estate market. More transactions are occurring privately than ever before. To embrace that transition, we spend many hours each week networking with other Realtors and our clients looking for offmarket opportunities—both investment and personal. We Are the Champions THE EL SEGUNDO ALL-STARS INSPIRE LOCAL PRIDE AS THEY RETURN HOME VICTORS OF THE LITTLE LEAGUE WORLD SERIES. Written by Kat Monk

The El Segundo All-Stars baseball team arrived home champions of the Little League World Series, held this year in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The team represents the West Region of the United States. As the players made game-winning moves in both the U.S. and international finals, they proudly made a point of highlighting the “West” on their jerseys. Taking the U.S. title first wasn’t easy. They had to overcome sickness and a loss to Texas with three consecutive must-win situations to avoid elimination. With an opportunity for redemption, they met back up with Texas—the team that put them in the contender’s bracket—in the U.S. championship game and prevailed when it mattered most. The world title was no walk in the park either. Their rival, Caribbean champ Curaçao, was favored to win the international bracket, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Although “the West” took the lead and held it for most of the international game, Curaçao hit a grand slam in the fifth inning, tying the game 5-5. In the bottom of the sixth, pitcher Louis Lappe, nicknamed “the Natural,” followed up with a game-winning walk-off homerun in the sixth and final inning. While it might be common in Little League to both pitch and hit, Louis does it exceptionally well. After weeks of celebrations, many of the players appeared to be a bit beleaguered with yet another parade, but Louis stood with a grin from ear to ear and waved to the exuberant fans who lined the streets of El Segundo. Louis didn’t do it alone. Brody Brooks, the team’s #1

That Hermosa Spirit AT 57, ANNIE SEAWRIGHT-NEWTON JUST CLAIMED A WIN AT THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE IRONMAN COMPETITION IN JULY—HER 18TH. Written & photographed by Kat Monk

Annie Seawright-Newton prides herself as the first woman to compete in the South Bay’s legendary Ironman competition. The annual 4th of July outing consists of running a mile, paddling a mile and then chugging a six-pack (without vomiting). Contestants are timed and watched for 20 minutes after finishing their final beer. Despite a competition dominated by younger participants, Annie could not be beaten. She celebrated her win by dancing with local band Pennywise, who returned this year to play for the anniversary. “The 20 minutes of the mosh pit is so much fun,” she says. The Ironman spirit runs strong in her genes. Daughter Piper competed for the first time this year and took second place. When asked if she might pass off the torch to Piper, Annie says, “I take it year by year.” Annie has been a competitive runner her entire life. In the 1996 United States Olympic Trials in Atlanta, she qualified for the 3,000-meter steeplechase exhibition event, the first year for women. The steeplechase is an obstacle race that combines barriers and water jumps. “It was an incredible experience running in the Olympic stadium in front of 30,000 people and being surrounded by world-class athletes,” she remembers.

As a senior at Mira Costa High School, Charlie Sue took AP studio art. “It was a random class for me but really changed the direction of my life,” she says. For her senior thesis, she examined burlesque dance: “finding beauty and feminine sexuality in things that are taboo.” After graduating in 2021, she headed to the Big Apple in search of her future. The decision didn’t come lightly. She knew she could get work in Los Angeles with her mom’s connections, but something drew her to New York City to be a dancer. Attending classes to become a stylist was her backup plan. Charlie Sue studied communication design at the Fashion Institute of Technology. “I used to do styling internships, but I found myself lugging hundreds of

Alongside friends, she wears crazy outfits and helps get customers out on the dance floor. “I’ll go up and get on the microphone with the DJ and dance around.” But she points out the vibe can change quickly. “You would be surprised, but people don’t care to dance on their own anymore. So my friends and I just have a good time.” ■

Denise M. Guzman, Founder/Principal Attorney

WHAT SERVICES DOES YOUR BUSINESS OFFER? Denise M. Guzman, Business and Estate Planning Attorney: We offer a breadth of legal services including business, litigation, estate planning, trust administration and entertainment law. The firm started by servicing the business community and representing the needs of business owners, whether it was the creation of contracts or the sale of the business. We also represented business clients with various disputes and were ready, if needed, to represent them in litigation. As our clients grew, their companies and wealth expanded— leading the firm to create our estate planning and trust administration departments. In recent years, the business world has expanded in the way businesses market, so the firm has stayed up to date on the various intellectual property rights that are found in copyrighted works and ownership of trademarks. Our services grow with the need of our clients and the ever-shifting world we live in. WHAT IS THE KEY TO BUILDING, MAINTAINING AND GROWING CLIENT RELATIONSHIPS? Drew Hallett, Business and Trust Litigation Attorney: The key is how much we care for and about our clients. It starts with the very first meeting. We not only listen to our clients, but we also ask questions to make sure we understand their situation or circumstance and what may affect or impact the legal matter at hand. With this information and our knowledge and expertise concerning the applicable or relevant law, we are able to provide tailored, practical advice that best serves their needs and goals. It also means that we act and respond with precision and purpose. We know how much these matters mean to our clients and act accordingly. We are prompt with our responses to our clients’ inquiries and diligent about putting our clients in the best position possible. HOW WOULD CLIENTS DESCRIBE YOU? Edward Powell, Corporate, Securities and Finance Attorney: A good lawyer listens to his clients and understands not only

their business goals but their personal goals. Economically challenging times may require flexibility in strategy to achieve those goals. By listening closely, I can help guide our clients to a solution they may not have previously considered, which ultimately achieves their goals even in times of great uncertainty. We receive most of our work from referrals by existing clients who acknowledge and appreciate the close relationships we develop with them and our creativity and diligence in protecting and growing the businesses they build. Marcus Chang, Business and Estate Planning Attorney: Clients would describe me as a guide—whether it is in estate planning, where I am able to provide them with options to help accomplish their goals for their estate plan based on their assets and desires, or in the administration of a trust or probate estate, where I help them navigate the process, including providing support and dealing with family dynamics. HOW IS THE BUSINESS MODEL OF YOUR FIRM UNIQUE? Jane S. Lee, Estate Planning, Trust and Probate Attorney: Our firm has the ability to help family businesses with both their business and estate planning needs, providing peace of mind surrounding their succession planning. If any conflict arises during the trust administration process, we are also in the unique position to be able to assist with trust litigation. WHAT NEEDS DO YOU MEET FOR CLIENTS? Marcus Chang: We help our clients by working with them to give them peace of mind—whether it is in drafting an estate plan that meets their wishes, assisting with the administration of a probate or trust to the end to provide closure, or helping resolve disputes that they may have with the trustee or the beneficiary. HOW DOES YOUR UNIQUE TRAINING ENHANCE THE SERVICES YOU PROVIDE FOR CLIENTS? Jane S. Lee: My master’s degree in tax law allows me to identify strategies to minimize the estate tax burden on clients’ estates in an estate plan and to understand the tax implications when helping clients distribute trust assets to the beneficiaries to minimize potential capital gains taxes or income tax burdens. TELL US SOMETHING UNIQUE ABOUT YOUR WORK THAT OTHERS MAY NOT KNOW. Carol T. Contes, Entertainment, Copyright and Trademark Attorney: I worked in Silicon Valley in the early days (before streaming hit Hollywood), and it is very interesting to see how technology has revolutionized the entertainment business ... and there’s so much more to come.

LAW OFFICE OF BAKER, BURTON & LUNDY, PC

WHAT IS YOUR DEFINTION OF SUCCESS? From our perspective, it is hard to stray far from Coach Wooden: “Having peace of mind knowing that we put in the effort to do the best we could for each client.” Another measure of success is our long-term relationships with our employees and many of our clients. It is common for clients to use our multiple practice areas. Often someone may first come to us because of injury in an accident, and then they come back for help in creating their trust or buying a business or piece of property. WHAT MAKES YOU A TRUSTED ADVISOR? One of the excellent aspects of working at Baker, Burton & Lundy is that each one of our attorneys is truly a trusted advisor. There is a broad diversity of legal experience here. Whenever a trust question, business question or litigation question arises in the course of business, we have the most experienced advisors inhouse. This is one of the reasons Baker, Burton & Lundy stands out and is recognized in the community and legal industry as go-to attorneys. HOW DOES YOUR UNIQUE EXPERIENCE ENHANCE THE SERVICES YOU PROVIDE CLIENTS? Clients usually think that the majority of our work involves researching, explaining and applying the law. In reality, our time is spent fashioning solutions that benefit both sides. The experience and reputation we bring greatly facilitate this process, and the calmness we bring prevents tangential arguments with opposing counsel that can tremendously increase legal fees. WHAT NEEDS DO YOU MEET FOR CLIENTS? In our profession, there are many legal problems for which we are hired that are stress-inducing. Not only do we meet the legal needs of our clients in areas of business, real estate, trust planning, and personal and business litigation, we also understand the need our clients have to achieve as much peace of mind as possible during their legal ordeal. Working with knowledgeable attorneys goes a long way in reducing our clients’ stress.

WHAT IS THE #1 WAY YOU SUPPORT YOUR CLIENTS? The #1 way we support our clients is to make sure the client is informed of all significant case developments. More importantly, we make sure all their questions are answered. We are easily accessible and take pride in knowing our clients and their needs. WHAT ARE SOME RECENT SUCCESSES FOR YOUR CLIENTS? For us, success in all of our practice areas is when our clients are completely satisfied with the results of their cases. For example, in a recent personal injury case with a traumatic brain injury, we understood the nature and complexity of the injury far more than the client. So we were able to refer our client to the most appropriate medical experts to receive excellent care, as well as securing significant compensation for our client for the injury involved. Our trusts and estates team recently created and implemented a complex gifting strategy for our client’s $63 million estate that produced millions of dollars in estate tax savings. On the litigation front, our trusts and estates team initiated a lawsuit involving a trust that purported to entirely disinherit our client. We recently reached a settlement that resulted in our client obtaining a 25% interest in the decedent’s estate. In transactions, our business law team recently negotiated and closed a complex transaction involving the sale and leaseback of a client's industrial property and improvements. This was followed by the purchase of two office building projects through a 1031 exchange and the sale of business assets involving foreign manufacturers and intellectual property for a total transaction value of over $60 million. DO YOU PARTICIPATE IN COMMUNITY PHILANTHROPY? Philanthropy is always a given at Baker, Burton & Lundy. We have a long list of charitable interests—from helping our local schools to participating in the Skechers Friendship Walk. On the legal front, many of our attorneys are volunteer mediators who are called on to help resolve cases before they devolve into litigation. TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILIES. Baker, Burton & Lundy is extremely family-oriented. It is not uncommon to see someone’s children doing homework at a desk at the end of the day. Many of our children have worked in our office over the years. At a recent office family beach party at the Portuguese Bend Beach Club, there were BB&L children from ages 3 to 32 playing volleyball and pickleball together with our attorneys and staff. We are local South Bay and take pride in the family environment that thrives here.

Paul Baboolal, Wealth Management Advisor

TELL US ABOUT A CHANGE YOU MADE IN YOUR BUSINESS. We’ve made some structural changes in recent years that are setting us up to be a business that can grow as our clients grow. I want to leave a legacy with my team that lasts well beyond my lifetime, allowing the foundation we’ve created to serve many future generations.

IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU ENSURE YOUR BUSINESS STANDS OUT IN THE MARKETPLACE? We operate on a unique platform that offers both wealth-building tools and tools for wealth protection, backed by the strength of Northwestern Mutual. We get to take a comprehensive view when assessing and building a client’s financial picture. In doing this, we make sure that tax-efficient systems are in place so they get the most out of their retirement.

IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU INTERACT WITH YOUR CLIENTS OUTSIDE BUSINESS? In what ways don’t I interact with my clients outside business? My clients are my friends, and my friends are my clients. We are all going through similar things: sending our kids to school, participating in community events, playing volleyball, tennis and pickleball together, and spending time enjoying the South Bay. I’m lucky that my professional and social communities overlap so much.

HOW DOES YOUR UNIQUE EXPERIENCE ENHANCE THE SERVICES YOU PROVIDE FOR CLIENTS? I have grown up in this business, staying with the same company from the start. In fact, I celebrated my 30th anniversary with Northwestern Mutual in March 2023. Given my tenure, there’s a decent chance that if a client is going through something, I’ve had prior experience addressing that particular issue. If there is ever a concern we can’t address ourselves, I have long-standing relationships with experts in various fields who can handle just about anything. Our team is passionate about this field, and we handpick our talent with a strong focus on academics and constant self-improvement to fit our culture. WHAT NEEDS DO YOU MEET FOR CLIENTS? Our clients are exceedingly busy with their work and family lives. We know that their time is valuable, so we make sure that any information presented to them is as clear and concise as possible. We are efficient in taking the time to truly listen to their needs, keeping accurate historical records and delivering a road map toward holistic financial success.

IN WHAT WAYS IS YOUR WORK MEANINGFUL? After nearly 31 years of being in the business, I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing the plans we have implemented stand the test of time. It is always joyous to see clients achieve goals that they stated many years ago. This happens when we frequently send clients peacefully into retirement. As a partner in their success, we feel we are truly part of the celebration.

DO YOU PARTICIPATE IN COMMUNITY PHILANTHROPY? We believe in and love the South Bay, and we’ve been proud residents since 1996. We are always looking for ways to give back locally. As partners of the Hermosa Beach Education Foundation, the Manhattan Beach Education Foundation and Hermosa Beach Little League, we are focused on improving the lives of future generations—especially when it comes to financial literacy. very important that I set realistic expectations. It’s only then that we can work on a path forward to make the best of the options and opportunities clients have. Most clients are very appreciative of receiving realistic expectations so they can more adequately plan for their futures.

WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF SUCCESS? Success in my office is having happy clients and positively impacting their lives. When clients stop by after their case has concluded to bring us wine, flowers, dinner and baked goods, that tells me we’re doing a great job for them.

WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE TO POTENTIAL CLIENTS? Try really hard to settle your case. Be open-minded in settlement discussions. We try to settle all of our cases outside court because ultimately that is what is best for the parties, their children and their finances. You should only go to trial when you absolutely have to. There are better divorce options than “I’ll see you in court.”

SHARE SOME OF YOUR PROFESSIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS. I was previously voted one of the 50 Up and Coming Women Attorneys in Southern California by Super Lawyers and Los Angeles Magazine. I’ve also been selected as a Super Lawyer, which is a designation of the top 5% of attorneys on the Super Lawyers list each year. HOW DOES YOUR UNIQUE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE ENHANCE THE SERVICES YOU PROVIDE FOR CLIENTS? I’ve done a lot of litigation. I attended the National Family Law Trial Institute in Houston. My clients benefit from my knowledge and trial experience. Trials in family law should be avoided if possible as they are very expensive, and the traditional process of through the court system takes a long time. However, not being afraid of litigating the case at trial is very helpful in settlement negotiations and also knowing what potential outcomes the trial will bring for my clients. IN WHAT WAYS IS YOUR WORK MEANINGFUL? I assist people during the most difficult times in their lives. They depend on me to advise them on their finances and their families. I try to settle every case in a way that brings my clients closure and a path forward. WHAT IS THE KEY TO BUILDING, MAINTAINING AND GROWING CLIENT RELATIONSHIPS? We try to educate our clients as much as possible on what the law is and what their rights and responsibilities are, and we help them navigate the process of their case as effectively and efficiently as possible. Most clients feel so much better when they have a clear understanding of the path forward. HOW DO YOU HANDLE DELIVERING NEWS THAT THE CLIENT DOESN’T WANT TO HEAR? I like to be upfront and honest about things, good and bad. It is

WHAT INDUSTRY TREND ARE YOU LEADING? Private judges. Utilizing a private judge to hear your case means you get to skip the public court system and the delays that come along with that. Your case is essentially fast-tracked. We get to choose a highly qualified judge who has a background in family law. We select dates that work for everyone’s schedules. A hearing that would normally take a week or even months to be heard in the court system is resolved in a day or two. Utilizing a private judge can save time, money and stress. TELL US ABOUT A CHANGE YOU MADE IN YOUR BUSINESS. While we have a beautiful office suite in the Hollywood Riviera section of Redondo Beach, some clients prefer not to make the drive to the office. Or they don’t want to drive to Downtown Los Angeles for a court appearance. We still have in-person meetings and go to court in person, but for those clients who want to cut down their commuting time, we can do everything virtually—from meetings to court appearances and even depositions and settlement conferences with private judges. You typically won’t have to leave the comfort of your home if you don’t want to. DO YOU PARTICIPATE IN COMMUNITY PHILANTHROPY? Access to lawyers and legal services is not available to everyone. I work with the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles to offer my services pro bono for victims of domestic violence. Sometimes if the Legal Aid Foundation gets a case that is too complex for their office to handle, they will refer it to me or ask me to assist. I do think it is important for attorneys to donate their services to people who need our services but cannot afford them. TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY. My husband and I have two little boys, and we live in South Redondo. It’s such a great place to live and have my office. This summer I didn’t have to take the kids to school, so I was able to walk to and from work—which was a real treat.

Historically, advice-giving was based on unique access to information. Only a stockbroker with access could give you a tip, so you paid them for that information. Now, information is free. Instead clients want someone to interpret that information in a way that provides a meaningful benefit as well as clarity. Where others are focused on data only, we trademarked Achieve Financial Peace of Mind™ because what differentiates someone giving information from someone providing meaning is the impact on the client. We focus on helping ensure our clients’ actions are aligned with their aspirations. IN WHAT WAYS IS YOUR WORK MEANINGFUL? Our clients Achieve Financial Peace of Mind™, and seeing them experience it is deeply meaningful. It is rewarding to hear clients breathe a sigh of relief as you assure them that despite the market tumult, they are still able to successfully retire. Spending an hour with someone and seeing the tension slowly fade away as

you help them see how they’ll be able to accomplish their most important goals is profoundly impactful, and it’s one of the things I love most about my work. HOW DO YOU HANDLE DELIVERING NEWS THAT THE CLIENT DOESN’T WANT TO HEAR? With honesty and empathy. Clients deserve to know the truth. They also deserve to hear it from someone who cares. Our experience is that when you speak directly and with compassion, it starts a dialogue about what next steps look like, rather than having clients shut down due to fear. DO YOU PARTICIPATE IN COMMUNITY PHILANTHROPY? Two years ago, the team launched a philanthropic arm of our firm called SVA CARES to participate in philanthropic events throughout Los Angeles. We have a yearly clothing donation for foster youth and participate in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. SVA CARES also supports the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, and in 2022 we were the fourth-top corporate team in fundraising efforts toward Alzheimer’s care, support and research. TELL US ABOUT A BIG CHANGE YOU MADE IN YOUR BUSINESS. The biggest change has been the move away from an individual approach to advice to a team-based approach. The “Big Lie” in the world of advice is that your advisor will always be there for you. The reality is that one day, either through retirement or mortality, they won’t. We realize that to truly take care of a client means growing a multigenerational team that can support them and their family. Now I can truly say to clients that we’ll always be there for them.

She had both her boys, Jack and Marty, while she was in medical school and residency. “My #1 goal was to be a mom and have a family,” she says. “It just so happens that I picked a career that doesn’t always make that easy. But you have to be confident in your decisions and what you think is important.” In 2013, Dr. Hannon and her family moved to the South Bay for her husband’s orthopedics sports medicine fellowship. They were only supposed to be here for a year, but the magic of our community convinced them to stay. Dr. Hannon worked in ERs right up until 2020, when she decided she needed a change. While she still works at urgent care and enjoys it, she also decided to open her own practice. It had always been a dream, but the inspiration to bring back the old-school house call doctor was inspired by a need she saw in the community.

Dr. Daryn: Given both of our advanced trainings from the University of Southern California (USC) and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in treating those who require special care—with complex medical, physical and mental conditions—the fact that we can treat them in a traditional dental setting rather than a hospital is very fulfilling. Many of these individuals do not have the same access to care as others, so simply being able to provide quality dental services for them and their families is very rewarding in itself. Dr. Kenneth: Our office is unique in that we can offer “more” to our patients in the form of sedation. This helps ease anxieties and phobias, which in turn allows patients to ultimately be more comfortable and relaxed during dental procedures. Furthermore, simple and clear communication and understanding of our patients’ needs are the most effective ways to help individuals who are nervous or require special considerations.

EXCITING DEVELOPMENT Dr. Daryn: Fortunately for many of us in the dental field and our patients, dental care has evolved from a primitive, often painful form of medicine to modern-day, state-of-the-art diagnostics and preventive care. This starts with the education students receive in school and the continuing education courses that are available. It is also based on the research that has gone into perfecting many procedures across the dental world, making them better, faster to perform with greater accuracy and more predictable. Cosmetic dentistry can whiten teeth and revitalize your smile. The “metalmouth” look has been replaced by invisible braces. Computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing technologies make procedures like bridges and crowns more accurate and

esthetically pleasing. The world of dental implants has revolutionized the way we can replace missing teeth and recreate smiles. Dentists are becoming more specialized and knowledgeable. The use of artificial intelligence is making its mark on dentistry and will soon be a very useful diagnostic instrument for detecting potential problems even earlier.

WISE WORDS Dr. Daryn: I wish someone told me earlier in my dental career that dentistry goes far beyond just “drilling and filling.” There is so much more to the field of dentistry that makes this profession a very enjoyable and rewarding one. The countless relationships that you create with your patients and peers are lifelong. If I could give advice to my younger self it would be: Do not let your job define you, as it’s important not to let work consume your whole life and identity. Try to experience things outside work, because it will give you more perspective on what your job is really like. Last but not least, decide for yourself what success looks like and work toward that goal by choosing a field/ career you’re passionate about.

OFF THE CLOCK Dr. Kenneth: When not treating patients, I work as a professional photographer for engagements, weddings and families. To me, dentistry requires skillful artistry and precision, and in the same way, I pursue the same quality in my photography. I also enjoy relaxing by playing tennis and golf, working out, watching shows and movies, and enjoying good food.

EXPERT DIAGNOSIS What is great about being an ER doctor is gaining the confidence and ability to handle just about any medical crisis or situation. Patients feel better knowing that we have experience with critical care and understand what to look for as we address and manage any concerning symptoms.

PERSONALIZED SERVICE DR. TARNAY’S MILESTONES I am an experienced emergency medicine physician with over 23 years of service at hospitals in the South Bay. My passion for health care began in high school when I was a lifeguard and continued in college as an EMT and first responder. These experiences ignited my profound interest in emergency medicine, propelling me to attend medical training at UCLA Medical Center and Georgetown University Medical School. This year, I joined Sollis Health to lead the newly opened Manhattan Beach medical center. Earlier in my career, I established an emergency medicine

Sollis is truly a category of one. With on-site imaging and a comprehensive lab, we can treat 90% of what a traditional emergency department handles with personalized care from ER-trained medical providers. A Sollis membership is universal, so members can access Sollis at any of our locations: New York City, The Hamptons, Los Angeles, San Francisco and South Florida. And your care doesn’t end when you leave our medical centers. Should a treatment plan require additional followup, our deep network of specialists nationwide allows us to expedite access and secure an appointment in a matter of days instead of months.

THE HUMAN TOUCH Most physicians begin their careers with a sincere passion to care for and help those in need. It can be increasingly difficult to maintain that focus and passion with the challenges of an ever-changing and complex health care system. Over the years, I have found that balance of navigating a strained health care system while maintaining the joy of taking care of our community.

CAREER CHOICE

CREATING SMILES

I truly believe I was born to be an orthodontist. I demonstrated an unusual interest in teeth from a very early age. My parents still talk about how “young Patti would enthusiastically brush her teeth several times per day.” Even now, I have never had a cavity and don’t have a single filling in my mouth. My desire to pursue a career in orthodontics didn’t waver, and I am fortunate to be able to live my passion every day.

Our Beach Braces motto is “We create smiles in more ways than one!” My team and I have fun every day with our patients. We always have a reason to celebrate, which sustains an entertaining environment. Our prize wheel and candy station keep the office lively. The “Beach Braces Bubbles” vending machine is our newest attraction for patients of all ages as well as parents.

THE NEXT GENERATION This year marked my 20th year of practicing orthodontics (USC class of 2003). It’s incredibly fulfilling to treat the children of previous patients. This is the highest compliment I receive. It warms my heart to have their trust and be able to create smiles for many generations.

PREVENTIVE MEASURES

ASSESSING AIRWAYS My training in airway-focused orthodontics has allowed me to customize treatment that aims to improve breathing by addressing dental and skeletal issues and creating a wider airway. This approach can positively impact a person’s sleep, overall health and quality of life. My 3D i-Cat imaging machine allows me to assess patients’ teeth, jaws and the size of the airway.

BEAUTIFUL BRACES I treat nearly 60% of my patients (children, teens and adults) with customized Invisalign clear aligners. However, I still have many patients in traditional metal braces and ceramic esthetic braces. My youngest patients enjoy our braces that come in a variety of shapes: hearts, stars, diamonds and even Mickey Mouse!

Parents, please take your kiddos to see an orthodontist by age 7, even if their dentist has not mentioned the need. By monitoring a child’s jaw growth at an early age, an orthodontist can determine if there are potential issues or discrepancies in their growth pattern. Early intervention can help guide jaw development and prevent more complex problems, such as airway constriction, mouth breathing and related sleep disorders.

CAREER HIGHLIGHT

BEFORE & AFTER

I love being a part of a smile transformation. To refresh someone’s smile or simply repair a chipped corner can often give patients the confidence they need to go out and show their best selves. It is a privilege to be a part of that!

This patient was self-conscious about the spaces between her teeth when she smiled, but she didn’t want to do anything too aggressive to improve her smile. So instead of porcelain veneers to change the shape and close the spaces, I did some “Michelangelo-ing” with resin and accomplished the same goals. This was a very conservative option, and she was very happy with the outcome!

Probably more meaningful than any smile transformation has been the many relationships I have made over the years thanks to dentistry. The friendships made with my team members, colleagues, sales reps and patients have been what gives me more of the warm fuzzies than any actual restoration or case I have completed.

I am an early bird; I've never been able to sleep in (but it sounds lovely). I am literally up and running at 4 or 5 a.m. every day, and I don’t stop buzzing around until the sun goes down. It’s like I’m solar powered!

prioritize what I need to do and block everything else out. I endeavor to do whatever I’m doing well at that moment and move on to what’s next. That’s all anyone can do.

OPEN AIRWAYS My sleep apnea patients love the Panthera appliance. This is milled from type 12 nylon, so it is super thin (less stuff in your mouth) and flexible (it does not feel rigid). It maintains a specific posture of your lower jaw to support your airway. Patients can adjust the position themselves, which is like reducing the volume of their snoring (spouses also love it).

I emphasize deliberate home care to patients because there’s nothing like your own teeth. When I diagnose early cavities that aren’t quite ready to be restored, I explain that patients have a window of opportunity to remineralize their enamel and avoid a filling. They can achieve this with consistent brushing, contoured flossing and using a fluoride rinse every day.

KEEPING COOL I made my peace long ago that I can only be in one place and do one thing at a time. When days are nutty, I tend to

I spend the majority of my day caring for someone or something. Whether it is patients, my team, my husband, our dog or my garden, I am hardwired to serve others. However, in the interest of selfpreservation, I carve out time each day to do something just for myself to ensure my efforts serve me too. Dedicating time for myself allows me to reset and fuel my spirit for the rest of the day.

STAYING FIT Running is my daily escape. It allows me to check out from whatever is on my mind to challenge myself physically and mentally. It’s my daily confirmation that I can do hard things!

CANINE GREETINGS Patients probably wouldn’t expect to arrive at the dentist and be greeted by a 100-pound German shepherd dog, but our patients can expect to meet Graham. I swear, I am his emotional support animal. He goes with me everywhere— including the office! Patients are disarmed by how calm and sweet he is. He’s become our unofficial mascot!

A 41-year-old patient had liposuction of her abdomen, flanks and back to decrease fullness and improve symmetry.

A 55-year-old patient wanted to improve her neck and lower face contour. A necklift tightened her lower face and reduced the chin fullness to improve her contour.

A 35-year-old patient had a bilateral breast augmentation with silicone gel implants and axillary liposuction. She went from a 34A to a 36C cup.

Our medical spa is staffed with nurses, physician assistants, aestheticians and massage therapists providing a wide array of noninvasive treatments such as CoolSculpting, Botox, fillers, lasers and skin care. All of these services are located on one floor in one building, making the experience private, efficient and customized for our patients’ needs.

A POSITIVE ENVIRONMENT Providing a great work environment for our staff translates to outstanding care for our patients. Many patients comment that our office is a pleasure to visit and far beyond their expectations. We are motivated to provide the best experience for all of our patients, and creating a positive work environment is critical to that goal. Our staff enjoy coming to work—not only because of the great environment, but also because they get to enjoy many of the same treatments that our patients receive. This keeps everyone looking and feeling their best.

HEALTH TIPS Our advice isn’t new or particularly sexy: Move every day and practice moderation. Exercise is the best antidepressant! Enjoyment of life is maximized when nothing is in excess.

ABOUT THE PRACTICE

A FAVORITE TREATMENT

Our practice fulfills all of our patients’ cosmetic and reconstructive needs. We have more than 30 employees at our medical office, surgery center and fullservice medical spa. Customer service is our #1 priority. We want our patients to be happy with their results and experience. Our five board-certified plastic surgeons offer the full spectrum of cosmetic surgery of the face, breasts and body as well as reconstructive procedures for diseases such as skin cancer and breast cancer.

Fat grafting for facial rejuvenation has significantly improved facial rejuvenation procedure results. Fat grafting can also be broken down into nanofat components for microneedling to further rejuvenate the skin and improve texture. We love to combine surgical and nonsurgical procedures (like a facelift and CO2 laser) to maximize a patient’s results.

A CALMING ENVIRONMENT From our warm and friendly staff to our bright, elegant facilities, we strive to make our patients' treatment and aftercare stress-free. Our providers plan every step and take as much time as needed to clearly explain every procedure, the expected results and aftercare so patients feel confident in their decisions and never feel rushed. We take all of our patients' concerns seriously and acknowledge the enormous trust they place in our hands. This unique combination of emotional intelligence and technical skill is what has set our practice apart for so many years.

PREVENTIVE MEASURES The proverb “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” is incredibly true and relevant in the world of plastic surgery. We strive to help patients maintain their skin and physical health. Ideally, that should begin at an early age with skin protection, sunscreen and a healthy diet. Botox is also an excellent preventive treatment. Topical creams and serums with vitamins A and C should be used to minimize aging. Our staff can help customize the best treatment for each skin type in order to keep our patients looking healthy and young without surgery and without recovery time.

It was the biggest joy to find Visiting Angels. It’s a wonderful franchise that provides care for the elderly and their families. We purchased the South Bay franchise in 2009. We are licensed and bonded with the state of California, and our caregivers are all backgroundchecked by the FBI. Every step of setting up our business has been an amazing journey. The best part is the day-to-day care of our elderly clients. We love doing our job!

TEAM SUPPORT We treat our staff members as family, honoring birthdays with gift cards and providing Christmas bonuses and gifts for all of our 75 caregivers and office staff. Our office staff hosts a threeday Christmas party every year so our caregivers can stop by for some holiday cheer. We provide benefits for our employees and are available 24 hours a day for any problem our caregivers may have and to assist them in better serving clients. We have received the Employer of Choice award for the last four years from Home Care Pulse.

ALWAYS AVAILABLE Visiting Angels offers home care for many purposes. We work all hours, 24/7, tailoring our services to each client’s needs. We offer a minimum of four hours of care, two days per week. This is a popular way to get started with home care. We offer a free assessment so the client and their family can meet us and discuss their needs.

REWARDING WORK People often need help as they age in place in their homes. Being a part of that has been a great feeling for all of

146 |

us at Visiting Angels. Staying at home is so important for elderly people to have independence and peace of mind. However, many people need some help, such as light housekeeping, meal preparation, and assistance with hygiene, dressing and mobility. Companionship is an amazing part of what we do. All people get lonely, and we think the elderly—especially those unable to leave their homes—are affected even more. They need to see people and share their feelings, their stories and some laughs. Having a caregiver from Visiting Angels may be all that they have to look forward to. A caregiver can take the client to church, book club or to a park to visit friends. Our caregivers provide a level of care that goes over and above the call of duty.

PREVENTIVE CARE The presence of Visiting Angels serves as preventive care. With a caregiver, your elderly parent has less chance of falling, getting dehydrated, not eating, becoming lonely or not bathing. While our caregivers are nonmedical personnel, they have sent clients to the hospital when detecting drooping mouths, slurred speech or any unusual behavior.

A VISITING ANGEL In September 2020, Duane experienced severe chest pains right after dinner. I immediately called 911 and was able to get him to Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center in San Pedro within 30 minutes. Duane was in severe pain, yet his EKG was normal. They did a CT scan, discovered he was suffering from an aortic dissection and recommended immediate open-heart surgery. He was transported to Keck Medicine of USC for the surgery, and after many weeks of ups and downs, we were finally able to take Duane home.

I was in need of help and so fortunate to have the assistance of one of our best caregivers, Stan. He had worked for us for 12 years and was a godsend at that time, when I needed to go to the office a few times a week. He fed and bathed my husband, dressed him, walked with him and did physical therapy with him. He cooked us meals before he left so I didn’t have to worry about dinner. Stan did our laundry, changed our bedding, kept me sane and was my emotional support. He would even sit in the ER during the times Duane had difficulty with medication or pain. This was a very difficult time for us, and we don’t know how we would have survived without our Visiting Angel Stan.

WORK-LIFE BALANCE Duane and I have many friends whom we see frequently. We belong to the Catholic church that I grew up in, St. John Fisher in Rancho Palos Verdes. We raised our children in Palos Verdes as well. We belong to Palos Verdes Tennis Club, and I play in the South Bay Marine League. Duane had a second open-heart surgery and is recovering well and is back to work (from home).

Our Innovations Save Lives. Daily. For over 70 years, The Lundquist Institute has been saving lives. Here are some of the innovations developed here at the Institute: • The successful fertilization through artificial implantation of the ovum, which would lead to the first ovum transfer birth 20 years later. • The first paramedic model and first nurse practitioner training program.

• The manufacture of low-cost eye drops to treat eye infections in newborns, especially effective in developing countries, saving the eyesight of hundreds of thousands. • The creation of Enzyme Replacement Therapy to treat Hurler-Scheie Syndrome. • The invention and production of infant heart monitors to prevent SIDS, and test for congenital heart disorders in newborns. • The first treatment for sickle cell disease ever approved for children.

• The test for high cholesterol that is still in use today. • The first Thyroid Deficiency Test for newborns. • Tens of millions of children born prematurely are alive today due to the development of Synthetic Lung Surfactants that allow newborns with underdeveloped lungs to breathe.

And so much more…from groundbreaking work in developing the first male contraceptive to developing therapies to prevent and control fungal infections and diseases, our trailblazing research continues.
