UNION FORWARD As our members craft words into a visual tapestry called costumes, helping to bring characters to life on screen, the Costume Designers Guild is designing a future where our members thrive. Our passion for advocacy mirrors the members’ dedication to their craft. Strengthened by solidarity within our Guild and in collaboration with labor unions and guilds across the entertainment industry, we witnessed the power of unity during our support for the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. This spirit of solidarity propels us as we approach our upcoming spring contract negotiations, riding the wave of unionism’s strength and momentum.
The CDG’s advocacy for its members did not slow down during the work stoppages. The Guild connected members with essential social services, providing assistance through organizations like the Motion Picture & Television Fund and the Entertainment Community Fund. CDG leadership supported members with dues extensions and waivers, a resource fair, additional educational programming, and showcased members’ work at various events. Despite the difficulty of the ongoing strikes, the past year marked an extraordinary chapter in costume design for both television and film. CDG members continued to transport audiences to futuristic realms, conjured historical periods, and breathed life into familiar contemporary characters. As CDG Communications Director Anna Wyckoff notes, “Costume designers may not set out to create icons, but as history demonstrates, they often do.” The passion for the artistry and craft of those involved in costume design, coupled with the unyielding solidarity among guild members, fuels our ongoing #NakedWithoutUs, #CreditCostumeDesigners, and #PayEquityNow campaigns. These movements shine a spotlight on the pay inequity that persists within our industry. Standing arm in arm with our kin, we strive to carve out a more equitable future for everyone involved. In a long-anticipated and dynamic shift to the CDGA, the Guild proudly recognizes and celebrates all classifications within our membership: costume designers, assistant costume designers, and illustrators. In the 25-year history of our awards, we break new ground as primary ACDs stand side by side with their designers in recognition of their invaluable contributions. Additionally, a dedicated award spotlights the artistry of costume illustration. This inclusivity, acknowledging every member shaping the costume design process, epitomizes the essence of solidarity and exemplifies our commitment to a unionforward approach. As we stitch together the fabric of our shared future, we do it with the unwavering belief that unity and recognition of all members will continue to drive us forward.

CELEBRATING EXCELLENCE IN COSTUME DESIGN A ND S IX YEARS OF PARTNERSHIP
CO NGRATUL ATIONS TO T H E 26 TH CDGA H O NO REE S & NOMINE ES
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT analysis, she embraces elegance as deftly as strippedto-the-bone reality. Annette inhabits her costumes, rather than wears them. We are proud to turn our Spotlight on her work. Cheering her success and creative contributions, we recognize costume designer Francine Jamison-Tanchuck with our Career Achievement Award. She began her storied career designing and costuming for television as well as film. She attributes her great success to a positive attitude and fearless approach to the work. Her current designs for the musical film The Color Purple showcase Francine’s aesthetic and design versatility.
Congratulations to all our CDG nominees! This opportunity to celebrate your diverse and impressive work comes despite another year of uncertainty. Your work has excelled and buoyed the industry with vision, determination, and love for our art.
Reflecting on the year’s highlights, we must also recognize the repercussions of multiple lengthy strikes. However, we forged unity as we marched with our SAG-AFTRA and WGA kin, held food drives, and supported each other as never before. Connecting with fellow Locals at this time made labor stronger, and we face our upcoming contract negotiations in solidarity. Our Pay Equity Now Campaign continues to gain momentum, with the issue permeating all our locals. Join us!
After lengthy consideration, this year we recognize the essential contributions made by our assistant costume designers and costume illustrators. This acknowledgement is overdue and embraced.
Sadly, we lost several of our distinguished costume designers this past year: Carlos Brown, Shawna Trpcic, April Ferry, Jay Hurley, Delphine White, and our beloved benefactor and supporter, Western Costume Company President Eddie Marks. He is deeply missed. Honoring his legacy, the Guild is proud to announce the Eddie Marks Costume Scholarship. We are currently accepting donations to endow the fund. The scholarship will open in 2025 to one graduating child of 892 and 705 members who is seeking continuing education for costuming. Complete details for the scholarship and application will be posted on our CDG website.
Joining us in this celebration of excellence are our extraordinary honorees. We are thrilled to inaugurate the Vanguard Spotlight Award with Billie Eilish. A trendsetter and fashion maverick, Billie brings a unique, avant-garde, and thoughtful styling to her look that epitomizes the definition of our Vanguard Spotlight.
This difficult year also affected our cherished support vendors. I must thank our extremely generous sponsors for tonight’s gala. Our longtime supporter and partner Western Costume Company is our premier sponsor for this event. Westfield Century City always supports our needs and is there for us beyond shopping.
We are honored to celebrate the incomparable, dynamic, elegant, and multi-award-winning actor Annette Bening with our Spotlight Award. Embodying a vast array of characters throughout her career, Annette has graced stage and screen in costumes spanning every genre. Through deep character
Enjoy the celebration!

CAREER ACHIEVEMENT
FrancineJamison-Tanchuck On the set of the Civil War epic Glory, her first major film production, costume designer Francine Jamison-Tanchuck faced considerable skepticism. “At one point, there was that feeling of ‘Does a woman know how to capture a war film?’ I thought, ‘Watch me,’” she recalls. As the production began, she won over the naysayers with her knowledge and dedication to accuracy. In the decades since, she has continued to design characters that resonate with humanity, passion, and pride. Jamison-Tanchuck was born in St. Louis, Missouri, to a classical pianist father and a surgical nurse mother. Her childhood was spent in Birmingham, Alabama, where she encountered Jim Crow laws and ever-present civil rights issues. When the family moved to Los Angeles, she began doing school plays and was introduced to costume design. She began her career as a key costumer on the 1970s NBC series Serpico. Her early costume design career involved collaborations with esteemed predecessors like Yvonne Wood, Donfeld, and Grady Hunt. She even joined Edith Head’s team on The Sting. Most recently, she designed the musical adaptation of The Color Purple after working on the 1985 version as a costume supervisor with friend and mentor Aggie Guerard Rodgers. In between, she built an
extensive list of credits that extend across a staggering range of genres as a costume supervisor: The Electric Horseman, in which she assisted another mentor, Ann Roth; St. Elmo’s Fire; The Running Man; and Coming to America. Jamison-Tanchuck’s credits as a costume designer include One Night in Miami, They Cloned Tyrone, Barely Lethal, This Christmas, Courage Under Fire, and Boomerang. She tackled historical dramas like Just Mercy, Birth of a Nation, and Emancipation, the sci-fi futuristic film Virtuosity, and contemporary projects such as White Men Can’t Jump and Big Momma’s House. She continued to work in television on such pivotal projects as The Wire and The Temptations. Her costume design credits have extended to comedies such as Fat Albert and Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties. It is Jamison-Tanchuck’s commitment to bringing truth to the screen that has solidified her legacy in the world of costume design. Her influence extends beyond her work, as she paved the way for future generations by contributing to memorable characters and stories that continue to impact broader culture. “Try not to allow someone’s negative thoughts or comments keep you from moving forward creatively,” she says. “You can be nervous, but don’t be afraid to risk taking the first steps even if you can’t completely see the staircase.”

VANGUARD SPOTLIGHT
Billie Eilish With the release of her sophomore album Happier Than Ever—which debuted at #1 in the Billboard 200 in the United States and in 19 countries across the globe—the 22-year-old Los Angeles native remains one of the biggest stars to emerge in the 21st century. Since the release of her debut single “Ocean Eyes” in 2015, Eilish continues to shatter the ceiling of music with her genre-defying sound. Fast-forward from her humble breakout: Her album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? also debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 in the U.S. as well as 17 additional countries around the world upon release in 2019, and was the moststreamed album of that year. Both albums were critically acclaimed worldwide and were written, produced, and recorded entirely by Billie Eilish and her brother, Finneas. Eilish has made history as the youngest artist to receive nominations and win in all the major categories at the 62nd Grammy Awards, receiving an award for Best New Artist, Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Vocal Album. She is the youngest artist to write and record an official James Bond theme song, “No Time To Die,” which won an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2022. In 2023, Eilish wrote and released the critically acclaimed song “What Was I Made For?” for the Greta Gerwig-directed motion picture Barbie, which has won numerous prestigious awards including a Golden Globe for Best Original Song, two Grammy Awards for Song of the Year (the first song written for a motion picture to win this category since 1999) and Best Song Written for Visual Media, and has been nominated as Best Original Song for the upcoming 96th Academy Awards. 22 | CDGA 26

A three-stage ballot process decided the nominees for the competitive awards. For television and short form categories, costume designers were asked to submit eligible projects for the 2023 calendar year. For film categories, costume designers were asked to submit eligible projects released between January 1, 2023, and December 31, 2023. Competitive awards are open to all designers given the credit of costume designer—regardless of union affiliation. Costume Designers Guild members nominated up to five candidates for excellence in the following categories: Contemporary Film; Sci-fi/Fantasy Film; Period Film; Contemporary Television; Sci-fi/Fantasy Television; Period Television; Variety, Reality-Competition, Live Television; Short Form Design; and Costume Illustration. In the event of a tie, a sixth nominee is added to the category. The entries receiving the most votes in Film, Television, Short Form, and Illustration became the nominees for the final ballot. The costume designers receiving the majority of votes in each category will become the award recipients tonight. Nomination and final ballots were tallied online by awardsforce.com.
