EVENING OPEN HOUSE Wed. NOVEMBER 14, 2018 DAYTIME TOURS WEEKLY RSVP:
losencinosschool.org/rsvp (818) 990-1006
I’ve always loved magazines. And when it comes to my favorites, I read them cover-tocover. I relish pausing on each crisp, paper page. Except the Editor Letter. It gets hastily flipped. Who cares what the editor thinks—even when the editor is famous, say Vanity Fair’s Graydon Carter or Vogue’s Anna Wintour? Do we really want to hear them go on (and in Carter’s case … on and on and on) about this and that? To me it always feels a bit pompous. Get me to the good stuff. So when I took this job nearly eight years ago, I didn’t put much effort into my letter. Who cares about my observations? I thought: I’m just a mom living in the Valley, helping to launch a start-up (and for God’s sake, let’s hope it works). The Ed Letter was almost like an afterthought. Ignoring any kind of creative writing or prose, I just spit out top-of-mind thoughts. No one is looking—right? Turns out I was wrong. Much to my surprise, people actually spend time with my Editor Letter. Readers always comment on it when I’m out and about town. “Oh, you’re the woman who wrote about how she discovered the Valley, coming over the hill one day in her VW convertible!” “Hey, how much did that kitchen cost?” “Do you and your husband still eat by candlelight every night?” (not always but still often; he has fallen love with golf). This past summer I was chatting with a neighbor, busy TV executive Bob Cook, and was taken aback when he quipped, “Yeah, I was reading your editor letter and …” What? He reads my letter? It was like being outed. Just a few days later, I went to interview the showbiz stylist Dana Asher Levine. She dresses the most powerful women in the industry and of course looked smashing in her Alice & Olivia blouse. I shook her hand and made some sort of apology about my lame outfit. I really wanted to look great that day—let’s face it, we women dress for other women—but a dog was sick, and a kid was having a meltdown. You get the picture. Dana replied, “No worries. I know how you normally dress. I see your picture on every editor letter page. That’s always the first thing I read.” (I’m really hoping she didn’t see the November issue with me after a particularly challenging Mighty Pilates workout—still in my tights—at the Urban Valley Market.) In any case I’m delighted some of you actually read my letter. Come to think of it, with this one, I probably should have crafted something witty about the holidays. (Go to TV writer Lissa Kapstrom’s “Last Word” on the final page for that.) Perhaps I’ll write a clever piece in the next issue, out in February. I’m working on coming up with a snappy topic right now. Happy Holidays to you and yours!

Don’t Hold Back
Edited excerpts from VB readers—the good, the bad and the subjective
I really enjoyed your November issue, particularly the article “15 Reasons Why the Valley is Cool.” My wife and I are excited to check out some of the places you mentioned, particularly Maui Sugar Mill Saloon. However there was one mistake—regarding the song “Our House” on Déjà Vu. That was a Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young album. And you left the great musician Neil Young off. —Shaun Bresford, Calabasas Shaun, truly mortified about this. He happens to be my favorite member of the band. Apologies to Mr. Young (and his fans) for the oversight.
I was very disappointed to see in “15 Reasons Why the Valley is Cool” that you included Lakeside Golf Club. “It draws some of the hippest guys” but not women because it won’t admit women. This is 2018, and Lakeside still does not permit women members, and it severely restricts the playing time of the wives of members who are there. There used to be a story that when they interviewed married applicants they would ask if your wife played golf and how often, as they didn’t want wives who played golf. I think it is wrong to glorify this club when there are others in the Valley that welcome women members, including El Caballero, which has a Robert Trent Jones, Jr. course that has hosted the LPGA twice. It even has women on its board. I know you have many women on your masthead, and I’m surprised that you would include this club out of the 1950s. —Karen Morin Green
I enjoyed your Q&A (in the WOMEN’s issue) with Councilmember Nury Martinez. But it’s amazing, in this day and age, that just two of the 15 members of the LA City Council are women. (The other is Monica Rodriguez.) The U.S. Senate has a higher percentage of female members than the City Council in our progressive city. And it’s not even close. The Senate is currently 23% female. The LA City Council is just 13.33% female. —Paul Grein, Studio City
I opened the WOMEN’s issue this morning over coffee and wanted to reach out to tell you how great it looks. Love the entire issue. Congratulations on another success! —Jennifer Evans, Studio City
Got something you’d like to share with the editor? Or a great story idea? Feel free to email Linda at linda@goldenstate.is.
What is “cool,” and what is not, is purely subjective. That said as someone who was raised by a mother and a grandmother, works mostly with women at VB and hosts a podcast that shares the compelling stories of women who innovate and achieve against all odds (SheSez with Linda Grasso), your note made me think—a lot. My sincere thanks for that.

LA home goods guru Heather Taylor shares a unique approach to designing an elegant but understated table this holiday season. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY HEATHER DAVID PHOTOGRAPHED BY TAMEKA JACOBS

Effortless is how one might describe Heather Taylor’s philosophy on entertaining. With her new home textiles brand, Heather Taylor Home, the designer lends her chic sense of style to handwoven goods, including tea towels, tablecloths and napkins—all of which, as Heather is quick to point out, can be used for special occasions or everyday. “I love entertaining, but I’m also a working mom with two little girls. I can’t waste time being too fussy about anything,” admits Heather, who lives in the hills off Mulholland. Here the perennial hostess shares with us some of her favorite items from her line—as well as some other goodies she likes to mix in for a smashing holiday table setting. GET CREATIVE WITH GLASSWARE Don’t feel like you have to load the table with glasses in traditional fashion. Interesting glassware can become conversation starters. I typically put one glass on the table and tell everyone to bring their wine glasses (or whatever they’re drinking) when it’s time to sit down. The last thing I want to do after a big dinner party is hand wash 50 wine glasses. PUSH YOUR COLOR PALETTE Everything does not have to be red, white and green. For example, a black and white gingham works well for all of the holidays, as do other warm fall and winter colors like burgundy and marigold. Mix in gingham patterns with stripes—it all works. SIMPLIFY SETTINGS On my tables it’s just a plate, napkin, fork and knife. Unless it is needed, I don’t set a spoon. It is part of my “less is more” approach. Plus I want to do fewer dishes! TAP THE TABLECLOTH A lot of people don’t like to use tablecloths because of the ironing, but for well-made, handwoven tablecloths (like the ones from my line) it is not necessary. For a really formal dinner, it’s a nice touch, but for everyday use there’s no need. The key is take them out of the dryer quickly and lay them flat to dry. ■

hen Scott and Jill Stephens got married 28 years ago, they lived in a Spanish-style apartment complex in Hermosa Beach. “We loved all the arched doorways and tiles,” Jill shares. It was before Scott, a producer (True Detective, Deadwood), had broken into the business. “We didn’t have a lot of money, and it wasn’t anything grand, but we just loved the vibe. It was so charming.” They ultimately moved to Studio City and were perfectly happy in their digs until 2009. Jill spotted a rundown, ranch-style house just south of the Boulevard. “I had always gone down that street on the way to a hiking trail and thought, ‘This is my dream street.’ It was just so pretty and the homes are spread out. One day I passed a 1940s home that was overgrown with weeds. I thought, ‘This is it.’”

VENTURA BLVD | DECEMBER 2018/JANUARY 2019
OWNING IT Jill took on the home’s interiors with a confidant, simplistic approach. “I buy what I like,” she explains. The dining room table and chairs (above) were bought on Craigslist.
Scott hired a friend of his, Emmy award-winning production designer Richard Toyon (Silicon Valley). “Richard is an architect who had done a few houses before he started working in entertainment, so I knew it was something he could do. We both are big fans of the work of George Washington Smith and Wallace Neff,” says Scott. “And that was what we were going for with the property.” Richard brought over a couple of books on the two architects and planning quickly got underway to build a Spanish Colonial Revival-style home. “We basically pinpointed what we wanted from those books,” Jill explains. “From the very beginning, the one thing I knew I wanted was a turret.” The couple, who has three kids all in their 20s, broke ground on construction in 2011. One year later, the family moved in to a two-story, 3,750-square-foot, fourbedroom home with stained oak floors throughout. Jill got her turret and, located at the entry, it is the focal point of the home. The ceiling, lined with wood in a mosaic-like pattern, dances from above. That drama is mirrored below, where Tiffany Miller Mosiacs created a circular Moorish design. With streams of brown-hued cement as the base, the pattern weaves in pieces of sea

glass that Jill collected from trips to the Caribbean. A stained glass window, crafted from some antique roundels the couple found in a shop in Pomona, adorns the façade of the turret. Two small windows, in the Spanish Revival style, provide even more light. Jill tackled the interiors herself with a “I buy what I like and work it in” philosophy. Purchases were made from a variety of sources, from Mission Tiles in Pasadena to eBay. Scattered throughout the house are Dia de Muertos-themed items, which Jill has an affinity for. The kitchen, kept to a combination of traditional hues of green, brown and orange, was designed to feel open and be able to accommodate large gatherings. “It’s great for celebrating family occasions, and we love it that we are able to have everyone in one space,” says Scott. It includes a “floating” bank of cabinetry, a charming seating “nook” and a dramatic, oversized copper sink. “With copper, there is no bacteria in your sink,” Jill shares in explaining her choice. The kitchen opens into a sprawling family room, with a dramatic turquoisetiled fireplace. On a fall day, watching Jill and Scott sip wine in their backyard, seated on a charming wrought iron settee surrounded by potted plants, mature olive trees and dramatic succulents, one feels their contentment at being there. While some of their fellow empty nesters are moving into something smaller and more manageable, this couple is staying put. As Jill puts it, “It’s our favorite place.” ■

What has made the biggest difference is not what Dr. Tolbert has done to help my back. It’s the way that she and her entire staff have treated me from the very beginning. For them, it was never about a broken down body part. It was about helping me find me again.
“

IMAGINE IF YOU COULD REVERSE THE AGING PROCESS USING YOUR BODY’S OWN RECOVERY SYSTEM
The Tolbert Center difference According to the American Academy of Pain Medicine, chronic pain now affects more people than diabetes, heart disease and cancer combined. Most people over 50 are given the option of surgery, pills or physical therapy to treat any number of musculoskeletal conditions. But, at the Tolbert Center for Rehabilitation and Wellness, a Los Angeles-area state-of-the-art medical facility, we believe there is a better way to heal people. If you’re looking to feel like you’re young again, Dr. Glenna Tolbert and her team of physicians and nutrition and fitness specialists can work with you to decrease your pain, enhance your performance and keep you moving—all without surgery. Imagine that! We offer four main treatments to restore the function of your body and make you feel faboluous.
DNA Testing As a result of an injury or the aging process, medications, stress and chronic illness can rob our bodies of their necessary elements. With DNA micro nutrient testing, Dr. Tolbert has decreased patients’ pain by supplementing their diets with minerals and vitamins to restore their bodies’ balance.
Exercise We incorporate exercise into the healing process because, as Dr. Tolbert always says, exercise is the secret to the fountain of youth. Bring in your golf club, dancing shoes or yoga mat and get personalized injury prevention training or enroll in our performance enhancement program.

Regenerative Medicine Regenerative medicine uses minimally invasive procedures, along with a patient’s own body, to regrow and repair damaged cartilage and ligaments. We use tools such as prolotherapy, PRP and stem cell injections to accomplish this goal without surgery. We are even beginning to use regenerative medicine for hair loss.
Mind-Body Connection The evidence shows that the power of the mind is important to healing the body, and vice versa. That’s why we recently added a psychologist to our team to educate patients about the strength of the mind as it relates to the body.
Sonic Stocking Stuffers Spice up your holiday party with these adventurous audible treats. WRITTEN BY RICH THOMAS
EVERYDAY IS CHRISTMAS SIA | (ATLANTIC) Probably the best contemporary Christmas album released in the last few years, and it doesn’t contain any covers. “Santa’s Coming For Us” sounds like a holiday re-rub of the Bewitched theme song. “Ho Ho Ho” is a raucous stein-swinger that name-checks all your favorite spirits. And “Puppies Are Forever” has really nothing to do with Christmas but is pretty much a universal truth and is guaranteed to put you in a good mood. Sia is a gifted songwriter with a magical voice, and this is definitely a new classic you’ll play every season. CHRISTMAS IS 4 EVER BOOTSY COLLINS | SHOUT FACTORY What’s Christmas without a little funk? Bootsy serves up 13 tracks on this offering, most of which are tongue-in-cheek reworkings of old standards. Instead of “The Christmas Song” we get “Chestnutz,” “Winter Wonderland” becomes “Winterfunkyland,” and Santa Claus isn’t necessarily coming to
44

town—he’s just coming. Christmas is 4 Ever isn’t for everyone, but Bootsy has never been a conventional cat. Who else is going to include a voicemail from Bishop Don “Magic” Juan and a guest vocal from Snoop Dogg? Not Michael Bublé, that’s for sure. CHRISTMAS WITH WEEZER WEEZER | DGC/INTERSCOPE The songs on this six-track EP were originally created for an iOS game, and the total running time is just over 12 minutes—but it’s a solid assortment of tunes to sprinkle into a playlist. The best part is the songs featured— “O Come All Ye Faithful,” “O Holy Night,” “The First Noel,” “Silent Night,” “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” and “We Wish You A Merry Christmas”—are usually the types of songs you’d skip over in a traditional Christmas mix. But Weezer’s big guitars and Rivers’ emo swagger make ‘em irresistible. KASKADE CHRISTMAS KASKADE | COLUMBIA On the dance floor, Kaskade is known for
bringing the euphoric EDM feels, but this collection is free of big-room bangers. Instead Kaskade parlays his crisp, immaculate production into soulful collaborations with female vocalists like Erika Sirola, Skylar Grey and Jane XØ. If everything I’ve just said sounds like a completely different language, just imagine the safe, poppy feeling you get when you hear any Maroon 5 song. Kaskade delivers the same type of vibe. VERVE REMIXED/UNMIXED CHRISTMAS VARIOUS ARTISTS | VERVE RECORDS When the party requires the classics but you still need some flavor, cue up this compilation. Mel Tormé, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong and other greats get a few subtle retouches—and some complete overhauls—from beatsmiths like Wax Tailor, The Orb, Fink, The Heavy and Brazilian Girls. If things get too weird, back off the remixes and let the originals warm up the room … but you really can’t go wrong with Verve. Their Very Best of Christmas Jazz compilation is a holiday essential.

Malibu’s best-known winery opens the Valley’s first wine and beer garden—and it’s pretty dreamy. WRITTEN BY JOSHUA LURIE | PHOTOGRAPHED BY TAMEKA JACOBS

Stanley the giraffe, Timon the zebra, and Speeder the water buffalo have become familiar sights at Saddlerock Ranch. You can’t miss them as you barrel down the long driveway at the Semler family’s 1,000-acre property, nestled off the coast in the Santa Monica Mountains. The sprawling estate— where the Semler’s winemaking operation is headquartered— hosts a wine safari, tasting room and an endless parade of private events. Suffice to say the family realizes the draw of a great scene. The family went about creating their new operation, Malibu Wines & Beer Garden that serves their well-respected Semler and Saddlerock varietals, with the same scenesetting goal. And even though the operation just opened in September, as the weekend crowds will attest to, it already has the distinction of being one of the best sipping spots in the Valley. The Semlers purchased part of the historic estate of silent film star Francis Lederer in West Hills to house their new operation. The entire property was designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 1978. The Spanish Mission-style hacienda is owned and occupied by a private family; the stables were being used as an art gallery. As the story goes, the Semlers were driving home from West Hills Hospital after meeting one of their newborn grandchildren, noticed the stables and “immediately felt drawn to the place,” explains head honcho Ron Semler. Taken by the historical significance of the property, the Semlers were originally interested in just helping preserve it. It was only later that it “serendipitously showed potential as the perfect home for Malibu Wines & Beer Garden.” The family worked with LA City council member Mitch Englander to find the owner and purchase the stables. Although the structure has been refreshed, the bones are still very much that of a stable. Stalls, on either side of the middle corridor, are framed by rounded archways. Inside each “cubby” are intimate seating nooks with hay bins—freshly painted a crisp white—still intact. Vintage photos of Lederer, who was once mayor of West Hills, as well as costumes and scripts from his films, line the walls. Walk through the stable’s center corridor, and you’ll see the real draw at the other end: a sprawling garden, framed by mature olive and pepper trees and pretty landscaping. With an oversized bar and ample seating that extends to the far end of the property, the space can hold up to 230 people. The trees

the sauce provide a canopy, so patrons can lounge sun-free at picnic tables and wine barrels topped with rounds. Most of the tables also have large red umbrellas, providing even more shade. At sunset the spot gets even more magical, as twinkling lights dangling vertically from the trees come on. A charming beehiveshaped fountain, a 1947 Chevy Fleet Master similar to one Lederer owned back in the day, and a stainless steel WINE structure that mirrors Robert Indiana’s famous LOVE sculpture are other key scene-setting elements. Guests can order wines by the glass or by flights; there are five to choose from, for both red and white varietals. I chose one of the Semler’s Saddlerock red flights. It consisted of 2015 Pinot Noir (tart acidity), 2014 Sangiovese (spicy finish), 2016 Merlot (warm spice notes), 2016 Zinfandel (stone fruit intensity) and 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon (tangy sweetness). While wine is the star of any Semler outpost, the family also takes craft beer seriously. The bar rotates 15 taps that stream primarily local brews including Celador Ales Melon Saison, Craftsman Heavenly Hefe and Chapman Crafted Pils. Each variety is served in the appropriate glassware and detailed tasting notes correspond to every tap. In an unusual twist: no food is served—not even bar munchies. Guests can bring their own fare or buy from vendors who are occasionally on site. On weekends Two Doughs is there, serving wood-fired pizza and cheese plates. During my Friday night visit, The Shrimp & Taco Stop and Italian Ice Shoppe trucks were both on hand. The latter was hawking three different alcoholic, fruity Italian ices made with Malibu Family Wines: Merlot with cherries, Pinot Grigio with pineapple and Rosé with strawberries. While Saddlerock Ranch has become more of a private events hub, the Semler family views Malibu Wines & Beer Garden as more of an accessible, public venue. Smaller private soirees are possible, but Ron Semler says the Valley location won’t ever completely shut down for events. It seems like he is on to something. Point of fact: the wine and beer garden is just as interesting of a destination as the Malibu ranch—save the wild animals. ■ Malibu Wines & Beer Garden 23130 Sherman Way, West Hills 818-712-9760 malibuwines.com/malibu-wines-beer-garden

ncino resident Jeff Kreshek was walking out of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles when it came to him. “My son had a back injury and needed surgery there. We feel so blessed that we had an amazing but short experience,” he explains. “As my wife, Lani, and I were walking the hallways, peeking into various rooms, it really hit us just how difficult the process of being in the hospital can be on people. No matter how serious or not serious the injury or issue is, it can be lonely, difficult and even boring. We wanted to do something to help.” As Jeff pondered this, he was jangling the change in his pocket and thought: What if we could take people’s spare change and use it to help? He turned to close family friend and Sherman Oaks resident, Andrew Apfelberg, whose two kids had also received care at the hospital. Andrew then thought of another Valley family, Ryan and Samantha Stromsborg, whose son had been treated at Children’s for leukemia. In less than a year, the three families had a concept: Change 4 Children’s. The idea behind the organization is simple—people can place a jar at their business, a sporting event or any gathering place, encouraging others to deposit loose coins and bills. The hope is that once people return a filled container, they’ll grab another. All of the money raised goes directly to one of the most underfunded branches at CHLA, the department of Child Life Services. This office distributes items like video game consoles, stuffed animals and anything else that brings a happy distraction or comfort to a patient and their family. Many patients spend days, weeks and even months waiting for their next treatment or recovering in their isolating hospital room. The Stromsborgs are all too familiar with the challenges of that scenario. “When my son Dane was originally diagnosed with cancer, my wife, Samantha, and I had begun spending a lot of time there. I think the thing that we all have in common is that it becomes really difficult to see the other families just struggling. We knew we had to do something immediately,” says Ryan. “We’re not trying to cure cancer or trying to fix someone’s heart with our jar of change. That’s not the goal. The goal is simply to make the experience for patients better,” explains Samantha. In March 2018 the group made a plan: to officially launch Change 4 Children’s at an Encino Little League game, with their colorful, handdecorated jars. “The energy was palpable. We had everyone over to our home, and it was like an assembly line, 10 to 15 people decorating and filling jars with information. It was truly incredible to watch. The kids—not the parents—were and still are the driving force,” Lani recalls. At ELL, the three families began sharing their heartfelt stories and why Change 4 Children’s is so meaningful. The reaction was powerful; people began emptying out their wallets and asking for containers. The organization—which has applied for 501(c)(3) status—has quickly taken off. Notre Dame High School, The Heschel School and St. Mel Parish are among the local organizations that are collecting change. There is also help from corporate sponsors like Bank of America (waives change counting fees) and Staples (provides collection jars). The families hope to expand the program to other children’s hospitals across the country. “Studies have shown that if you can raise people’s spirits, you can keep them having hope, and the outcomes are vastly improved,” says Jeff. ■ To receive a Change 4 Children’s jar or start a collection challenge at your child’s school, visit change4childrens.org.

From millennial hipsters to high-end boutique buyers, the Rose Bowl Flea Market has been something of a religious ritual for Los Angelenos for the past 50 years. t is 5 a.m. on the second Sunday in October, at the Rose Bowl. The moon is still visible against the dark sky and a silhouette of towering palm trees. As cars roll into the parking lot, the tops of tents can be seen in the distance. People wearing headlights and carrying flashlights are visible through the chain link fence. They are all scrambling, as if in a hurry. It is flea market day. Buyers from around the world come here one Sunday a month to peruse the thousands of stalls, in search of “a find.” Laurent and Clara Michel drove straight from LAX after a flight from Paris. Only in town for a week before heading to San Francisco, they didn’t want to miss the experience, paying the early bird fee of $20 to get in before 7 a.m. “We heard the Rose Bowl is a must, so here we are,” says Laurent, in a thick French accent, as he watches Clara peruse a rack of ‘60s fashion. “This is lovely, don’t you think?” she says, holding up a floral chiffon dress. Marking its 50th anniversary, the Rose Bowl Flea Market welcomes over 20,000 shoppers, including 1,500 tourists, wheeling wagons and baskets through its gates each month. The 2,500 vendors, some
A LOOK BACK The Rose Bowl flea market originated with R.G. Canning and partner Bill Tunnell, who, back in the ‘60s, produced successful car shows across the country. Noting a rising interest in antiques, they decided to expand their concept as a showcase for other items. Good locations were difficult to find and early events were not successful—until the duo stumbled across the Rose Bowl. As luck would have it, they also discovered the City of Pasadena, which owns the Rose Bowl, was looking to generate additional income. “There were about 200 vendors when the flea market first started in 1968,” shares Dennis R. Dodson, COO of R.G. Canning Enterprises. “Now 2,500 represents a sold-out event, and we consistently meet that number.” He adds that with the addition of more vintage clothes, the age demographic shifted from 34-plus to 18 to 54. Tastes ebb and flow—and so do vendors. Brothers Jeff and Steve Oliphant, now 63 and 59 respectively, started selling antique gramophones and phonographs in 1974, when they were teens living in Sherman Oaks. They had a constant presence at the Bowl through
setting up as early as 3:30 a.m., sell vintage clothing, antiques, jewelry, collectibles, furniture, arts and crafts, and brand new merchandise— most anything imaginable. While many flea markets have floundered across the country, the Rose Bowl stands as the grand empress amidst other popular local markets, including PCC (Pasadena City College) Flea Market, Melrose Trading Post, Silver Lake Flea, Santa Monica Airport Outdoor Antique & Collectible Market, Artists & Fleas LA and Long Beach Antique Market. Simona Sabo, a fashion designer and stylist for film and TV, has sold her Picky Jane collection in the antique section for six years and recently opened a brick and mortar of the same name in South Pasadena. Her inventory, featuring romantic turn of the century styles, perfectly conveys an “it girl” millennial aesthetic—as Simona describes, “something old you can wear in a new way.” She says many of her customers travel from Italy, France and Japan, and very often make purchases for their own stores abroad. “I see them face-timing and discussing what to buy.”
the mid-1990s. Considered to be among the most active collectors in the country, they took a break and then returned to being regulars at the market. Jeff says a number of their customers are in the entertainment industry, including several Grammy, Oscar and Emmy winners, who purchase from their collection of Edison and Victor antiques. The items date from the 1870s to 1910, with prices typically ranging from $300 to $3,500. “The promoters of the Rose Bowl Flea Market have done an excellent job keeping it relevant and, by far, it is the best ongoing event in the nation,” says Jeff. “The collector base, the diehards, remains strong and enthusiastic. The crowd also includes a large tourist/ international demographic, from both Europe and Asia.”

kerchief and red Converse high-tops. His collection is considered “top-shelf” among Hollywood stylists and clients like Jude Law, Usher and Catherine Keener. Richard says he sources for his brand, Pickpocket Vintage, from “secret special places,” including London, France and Ireland, with an inventory that ranges from 1920 to 1980. His mainstay items are ‘50s to ‘80s Levi’s, priced from $45 to $650, according to seam, rivet and label detailing; and one-of-a-kind vintage band shirts that go from $20 to $500, depending on the “quality of graphics and availability of the shirt.” He counts his ’72 Doors, late ‘70s Blondie and ‘70s New York Dolls tees among his most rare collectibles, all priced at $500, as well as a David Bowie “Sound and Vision” for $160. Of special pride is a Joni Mitchell early ‘80s tee and “the only one available at the moment.” Growing up in Newcastle, England, Richard started going to antique fairs with his father at age 4, and by the time he was 11, shopped thrift stores. Moving to LA in 2011 to act, he continued to collect, and within a few years, friends suggested he start selling. He sells at two flea markets every weekend, rotating between locations, but says the Rose Bowl is “the place to be.” He opened Pickpocket Vintage at La Commune General in Atwater Village this past summer and just last month opened a store in the hipster seaside community of Margate, outside of London. “My hobby became my life. I absolutely love what I do.” Heather Silva, of We Move Vintage, wears an emerald green, ‘70s dress that sets off her green eyes. Inspired by observing her parents’ fashion business, she’s been collecting for 20 years and has sold at the Rose Bowl for nine years. “I love it because it’s world-renowned, with so many people coming from other places.” She also sells at upscale vintage shows and online at her Etsy store. Heather describes her inventory as “boho pieces from the ‘70s, mixed with ‘90s minimalism.” Standouts on this particular day include an avant-garde style Norma Kamali jacket with velvet collar for $175. “The ‘80s was her era.” Across the footbridge, among the antiques in the “white” section, Robert Snaith’s stall is a mosaic of bold colors, ethnic patterns and rich textures. He has been selling textiles, ceremonial clothing, and a sundry of antique odds and ends hailing from China, Thailand, England and France for the past 15 years. He counts Diane Keaton, Lisa Bonet and Katey Sagal among his clients and sells under the business name, Strictly No Elephants. “As long as there is a flea market, I’ll go anywhere. I was in China last week. I’m off to India next week,” shares the London native. He also sells his handpicked treasures at the Santa Monica Airport Outdoor Antique & Collectible Market, Long Beach Antique Market and Sunbury Antiques Market in Kempton Park, which he says is the best in London. Unfolding a colorful length of fabric, Robert points to the edge, revealing a seam—and a story. “This was once a thousand-pleat skirt worn by the Hill tribe people of China and Thailand,” he explains. “The fabric pieces can be sewn together to make table runners, tablecloths and pillows,” he tells a customer. He pulls out a “marriage” quilt and says, “It took a year to embroider by a mother and daughter in the Yao hill tribe for a wedding,” then points to a symbol that means “double happiness” in Chinese. “It’s what you want on a wedding quilt,” he quips.

Annette Vartanian, Pasadena-based founder of the blog, A Vintage Splendor, conducts flea market shopping tours. Here she recommends 6 tips for navigating the Rose Bowl. MAKE A LIST AND REFER TO IT Once you find an item, circle back to your list in determining whether to buy. If it meets your quality criteria, even if it is more than you budgeted for, then it is a good deal. BUY TICKETS ONLINE/ARRIVE EARLY Arrive by 6 a.m. for amazing finds and to beat the crowds. Tickets start at $20 for early birds and reduce to $9 after 9 a.m. DRESS SMARTLY Regardless of time of year, you can experience a multitude of temperatures throughout the day. I layer up and usually wear shorts or jeans and a tank, topped with a light jacket. Wear leggings if you’re trying on clothes. For the best deals: leave designer items at home. BE PREPARED Bring a large bag or rolling cart, a fully charged cell phone (to research items), cash and a checkbook. Some vendors use Venmo, so download the app. Having cash on hand gives you the upper hand when negotiating. Don’t forget water and a snack. HAVE A STRATEGY The Rose Bowl Flea Market is split into sections to navigate the shopping experience. Shop big items like furniture first (you can circle back for pick-up later) and then move on to small. Furniture is mostly in the “white” antiques section. LOOK FOR POTENTIAL Keep an eye out for furniture that is unique in shape; don’t get caught up in fabric or color. You can reupholster and paint, but you can’t change the shape. You want to buy the “ugliest” or “fixer-upper” in the group because that’s where you’ll get the best value. A little elbow grease can turn almost anything into a classic piece.

VENTURA BLVD | DECEMBER 2018/JANUARY 2019
And the “absolute hot ticket right now”—a homespun blanket from Gujarat, India, which an unnamed high-end store on La Cienega sells for $1,600. At the Rose Bowl, Robert sells it for $400. Around the corner is a large stall filled with a staggering collection of ornate turquoise, displayed in glass cases. This is some of the highest end loot of the market, with prices up to $9,000. The vendors, two middle-aged sisters, share the story of their late mother’s collection. “She had a real affinity for native American culture. She traveled the world with artists and other collectors. She would wear a bunch of bracelets on her arms, drape necklaces over long gowns and had six ear piercings.” Mid-century modern furniture is having its hey day at the Bowl. One of the many stops for enthusiasts is Sofia’s Antiques, a familyrun business of 15 years. Sofia and Daniel Vargas, along with their three daughters, source pieces throughout California, Oregon and Pennsylvania. They reupholster, refill cushions and refinish the wood. Daughter Jennifer says they “enjoy the hunt of it … ugly ducklings become beautiful swans.” The family takes the show on the road to Long Beach and Alameda, but the Rose Bowl is where they do the most business. As with nearly every vendor, there is a favorite story: Once a Victoria’s Secret supermodel, receiving delivery of a ‘50s couch, answered the door stark naked. For 10 years, husband and wife partners Dani and Eric Davis, of Euro-Linens, have traveled to Pasadena monthly from their Santa Cruz home decor showroom, Patine, to sell their repurposed imports from Hungary, France and Germany. The antique wares, procured from farms and gypsy enclaves, include nightshirts, kitchen towels, linen grain sacks, large wood dough troughs and decorative preserve jars. “They know we’re coming and save things for us,” says Dani. Pillows and runners fashioned from the grain sacks are piled high—all handmade by Eric. He points to the colored stripes on the pillows and explains that each color represents a different farm. Pillows are sold for $50 to $100, versus more than double that at upscale boutiques. TREASURE HUNTERS Bonnie Pomish has made the hour-plus trek to the Rose Bowl from her Oak Park home for more than a quarter century. With a house full of “treasures” she’s found over the years, she still loves going for the thrill. Her favorite find? A French bench with petit point embroidery. “I found it under a pile of clothes. When I asked the price and the seller said $75, I had to keep my poker face on ... it was such a deal!” Nicky Loomis, 35, grew up in Pasadena and says shopping excursions to the Rose Bowl represent different junctures in her life. “When I was a teen, I’d go with friends and look for clothes. It was the place that designers from Urban Outfitters came to find inspiration. Now as I’ve gotten older, I’m searching for home goods.” But as Nicky sees it, there doesn’t have to be an end goal. “The best thing about the Rose Bowl is that you can go and have absolutely nothing in mind, wander around, get some food and enjoy the day.” Or she adds, “You can do all that and end up finding something truly magical.” ■

The Brady kids are taking their place on the staircase at the infamous house in Studio City, as shooting gets underway for A Very Brady Renovation. WRITTEN BY ANNE M. RUSSELL PHOTOGRAPHED BY SHANE O’DONNELL ILLUSTRATED BY CHRISTINE GEORGIADES
H
ow much would you pay to own a nearly 60-year-old cultural icon, a piece of TV history known as “The Brady Bunch house”? For the Discovery network, the answer was $3.5 million—cash—to claim the three-bedroom, three-bathroom property that sits on slightly under a third of an acre in Studio City. That bid was almost double its listing price of $1.9 million, and it allowed Discovery to grab the house out from under former ‘N Sync singer Lance Bass, who for a brief, joyful period on Twitter, celebrated what he believed was his own winning bid. The first hint about the network’s plans for the property came on an earnings call in August, when Discovery CEO David Zaslav reported the house would be used for a project at Discovery’s

newly acquired channel, HGTV. That was followed in November by an announcement that the historic house would star in what is tentatively titled A Very Brady Renovation. The new show will feature HGTV homereno-show stars like Property Brothers’ Drew and Jonathan Scott (the latter himself a losing bidder for the house), Hidden Potential’s Jasmine Roth, and Restored by the Fords’ Leanne and Steve Ford. It will also host “surprise celebrity guests,” including the six surviving Brady Bunch castmates. The show’s premiere is slated for September 2019. Still running in syndication and streaming 40 years after the last episode was filmed in 1974, The Brady Bunch represents the ideal of American suburban life to multiple generations. The single-family home, in spite of being widely known as “the Brady House,” was used only for exterior shots for the five-season-long iconic family comedy. A soundstage at Paramount Television studios was the location for all the interior sets—and the action. With its showy, double entry doors, shake roof and leaded glass kitchen windows, the house, located at 4222 Clinton Way in the sitcom, is on Dilling Street in real life. As the storyline goes, it was designed by Mike Brady, the mythical dad of the blended family and an architect by profession. Whether it was one of his better efforts is left unsaid. The 2,447-square-foot property has only had three owners since its construction in 1959. It was sold in 1973 by the original owners for $61,000 to Violet and George McCallister, whose heirs sold it to Discovery. According to Douglas Elliman Realty’s Spencer Daley, who was the sellers’ co-listing agent, it was the original owners who agreed to the use of the house’s exteriors on the TV show, but the McCallisters allowed the deal to continue. “The McCallisters jumped into it without really understanding the implications of it,” he says. That bit of naïveté paid off handsomely for their children, however. “The house hasn’t changed since it was built in 1959,” Daley says. “It’s been kept relatively intact. The sellers—and we as agents—wanted to sell to someone who would preserve it.” He adds that the property was on the market less than a week and a half with eight active bidders before the deal closed. Probably no one is more interested in the impending fate of the house than the surrounding neighborhood. Jill Underhill lives right next door. She says the company producing the new reality show, Lando
Entertainment, delivered a box of jumbo cookies to each house on the street, with a notice that construction would soon begin and asking them to “please accept the cookies as a token of goodwill.” On the day the news broke that the six “Brady kids” would be in the show, she watched them all gather at the property, which had been turned into a “video village with honey trucks for the cast. After my sons got out of school, we went over there and got pictures with ‘Greg’ and ‘Bobby.’ When I met ‘Greg,’ I riffed off the theme song saying, ‘I live next door with three boys own my own,’” Jill laughs. Alan Dymond, president of the 2,000-member Studio City Residents Association is more apprehensive. He makes it clear he and his group are supportive of the film industry in general saying, “The studios have been very good neighbors.” But he adds that the locals fear Discovery will turn the Brady House into some kind of theme park. “What we’re concerned about is that people will come and tour. Is it going to be a destination point?” he muses. The house is already, according to the Douglas Elliman listing, the second most photographed home in America (after the White House) and has its own Yelp listing and appears on Google Maps of the area. Discovery says the HGTV Brady house makeover will involve a re-do of the interior to match the actual studio sets—a process that will include making a subdued whiteand-floral kitchen into a ‘70s era orangeand-green color riot. It will not, presumably, involve removing the toilet bowls from the bathrooms, as required by network standards at the time the show was filming. (For Brady Bunch trivia fans, there was no actual toilet on the set of the kids’ bathroom, only the tank.) In what Discovery describes as a “showstopping transformation,” the renovation will expand the house by 2,000 square feet beyond its existing footprint, to accommodate the reconstructed sets. It will be, promises Loren Ruch, senior vice president, HGTV programming and partnerships, “a trip down memory lane.” While it seems unlikely the neighborhood’s worst fears of a perpetual Brady Bunch shrine, with long lines of devoted pilgrims, will be realized (hard-core fans are now middle-aged), it does look like memory lane —at least for the time being—will be a hub of action. ■

Delight Within Reach
Only 90 miles south of LA, the Park Hyatt Aviara is a 200-acre luxury resort, full of surprises. WRITTEN BY KAREN YOUNG
82
VENTURA BLVD | DECEMBER 2018/JANUARY 2019
Whether traveling locally or abroad, I prefer boutique lodging to a large-scale hotel. So when my traveling partner and I set out to visit the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, while open to any unique offerings, I fully expected a bustling, big-brand experience. And frankly I was concerned that its proximity to Legoland would take away from an adult getaway. Perched on a verdant ridge, a mile from the Pacific Ocean, the 327-room resort (including 43 suites) was originally built as a Four Seasons in 1997 but changed hands in 2010 and was refurbished. In 2018 the resort received a Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star rating for the fourth consecutive year. The combination of Aviara’s Spanish Colonial architecture and its tropical landscape radiates a luxurious, yet casual elegance. Enormous picture windows complement palatial ceilings. Fine art and antiques meet modern design flair. Perfectly appointed touches appear at every turn—from fruit-essence water to elaborate fresh flower displays to Kai fragrance lightly filling the air. While strolling the lavish grounds, we were surprised by the quietude and happy to find two designated pool areas—one for families and the other strictly for adults. A panoramic view of the Batiquitos
Lagoon wildlife sanctuary from the adult pool extends to rolling hills, winding nature trails, and the prestigious, 18-hole, Arnold Palmerdesigned Aviara Golf Course and Clubhouse—where the annual LPGA KIA Classic tees off in March. Six tennis courts sit adjacent to a large, grassy field, where we observed a small group exercising. We learned the guests were part of VeraVia, a customized, all-inclusive wellness program that partners on-site with Aviara. At a high-end price point, it provides a unique, holistic, medical, and behavioral approach to fitness and nutrition. At the spa I opted for a soothing, 50-minute, “Bliss” massage. As I relaxed afterward in the spa’s peaceful solarium, sipping tea and gazing at palm trees through a skylight, I overheard two women chatting about how much their children loved the hotel’s kids’ camp. Nice. All traditionally designed, standard guest rooms measure over 500 square feet and feature a balcony, oversized marble bathroom and sitting area with pullout sofa. We took the complimentary shuttle to dinner at the resort’s Argyle Steakhouse and sat on the outdoor terrace overlooking the lagoon and 18th hole. A “steak knife concierge,” armed with a sleek collection, directed us toward the proper utensils for our perfectly prepared,
organic rib eye and filet mignon. I chose a sharp little number by Porsche. Our artistically plated salads and vegetables were also standouts for freshness; produce is hand-sourced at local farms. A nightcap around the fire pit, and listening to the sounds of soft jazz from a pianist in the hotel’s lounge capped off our evening. Another dining choice is Vivace, the stylish, signature, Four Diamond, Italian restaurant. For those seeking more casual fare, there is California Bistro, which also features an impressive breakfast buffet. All restaurants at Aviara are overseen by executive chef Pierre Albaladejo, whose credentials include several European Michelin restaurants. The chef also leads a special wellness program that incorporates surfing with cuisine. From friendly service to on-point amenities, the Park Hyatt Aviara has a boutique hotel personality in the guise of a large brand hotel. Another takeaway from this experience: opening your mind beyond preconceived notions can yield wondrous results. ■ Park Hyatt Aviara 7100 Aviara Resort Drive, Carlsbad 760-448-1234

We have a network of experts trained to guide you through all the phases of parenthood. We like to keep things as real as possible, and we want everyone to feel 100% comfortable. We have teachers with different styles and personalities so you can find one you connect with most. We want to help you navigate the thrills and challenges of pregnancy. At this studio we welcome all the lovely messiness and chaos that comes with newborns, babies, children and toddlers. Please feel free to change a diaper, soothe a crying
baby or breastfeed. We welcome it all. We are conveniently located near all the canyons and freeways and, extra bonus, we have tons of free parking!” What is the most rewarding aspect of running your business? “I love the whole journey! I have met women in the fertility classes that have become pregnant. I meet their babies, I teach their toddlers and then I get to watch the children practice yoga. In a sense I become part of their family, and they become part of Two Hearts family.”

ontour Room, formerly known as Endermologie Body Sculpting, was created by Aleksandra Turlure nine years ago. The center specializes in noninvasive skin conditioning, wellness and fitness recovery-enhancing services. Aleksandra has worked in the beauty industry for more than 17 years. Describe your business. “Contour Room Inc. offers high-tech European treatments that enhance your beauty and wellness in a noninvasive manner. Most of the technology was originally designed for therapy and recovery from injuries and surgery, but over the years it has become widely used in the beauty industry.” Tell us about the services you offer. “I pride myself on having selected the best tech in noninvasive beauty and wellness enhancement for the body and face. We started out offering endermologie, a skin rolling treatment. A few years later I added LED to reduce inflammation and improve the look of loose, crippled skin. Next came my infrared sauna pod, Ballancer Pro lymphatic drainage system and the Z-Wave, which is an acoustic machine for fluid mobilization. Most recently we’ve added facial technology: CooLifting, Dermatude, OxyGeneo.”

What common conditions do you help with? “I don’t ‘treat’—rather I bring back the balance to the skin. We reinforce proper functioning of the lymphatic system and blood circulation; help balance water retention; stimulate your own skin cells to produce new collagen and elastin; and reinforce metabolism of fat. People usually come to me because of complaints of cellulite, aging skin and heavy legs. Some clients are also referred to me by their doctors after liposuction or other more invasive body contouring treatments, or due to toxic mold syndrome.”

How do you maintain your own health, beauty and fitness? “I have always been an active person. I go to the gym to keep my body in shape, and since moving to Los Angeles from New York I have been going on random hikes whenever I can. I do weekly sauna sessions and get lymphatic treatments with my Ballancer as often as I can. I follow an anti-inflammatory diet and get myofascial release every 10 days and chiropractic adjustments every two weeks. I do not consider myself a health nut, but I am interested in a healthy, pain-free lifestyle … and hey, if these things help me look good too, I will be happy. Balance is key.”

We best serve our patients by giving them optimal, specific treatment, rather than trying to recommend the same treatment for everyone.” What concern do you frequently hear from patients? “That they look natural after their aesthetic treatment. Our practice provides treatments that are well-planned and administered in the safest, most conservative way to ensure a natural look and minimal down time. At the intersection

Bella Skin Institute also donates to the American Society for Dermatologic surgery charity organization.” What innovations can we expect from Bella Skin Institute? “I have created a non-invasive facelift, the GuancheLift™ and have advanced the areas of microbotox and microfiller techniques using Aquagold Fine Touch. I authored a book about beauty, Seven Days to Sexy, that will be available soon. It is a guide to looking and feeling your best in seven days, seven weeks and seven months.”

JIMMY A. HIRSCH
JHirsch@TheAgencyRE.com 310.413.7414 Lic. # 01970186
Realtor® Jimmy A. Hirsch represents buyers and sellers of single-family residences in Encino, Sherman Oaks, Studio City and Tarzana. After nearly two decades of working in the industry, he switched to full-time nearly four years ago and joined The Agency in 2016. He also personally builds and flips homes and invests in multi-family apartments.
HOW DOES YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF THE AREA BENEFIT YOUR CLIENTS? “Having resided in five different Encino homes since 1981, I have an intimate knowledge of the San Fernando Valley. My wife of 26 years, Pam, is an integral part of my support team, having her own uniquely different and qualified experiences. Our children have been raised in the SFV (Oakwood and Harvard-Westlake) and are now in college. Whether you’re just arriving to the SFV or have been here for many years—whatever your individual situation, chances are we’ve been through it ourselves.” SHARE A BIT ABOUT YOUR FIRM— WHAT MAKES IT NOTEWORTHY? “The Agency is a different type of brokerage firm. It was founded by three very successful agents at three different national franchised firms. After only seven short years, they have transformed the nearly 40-year-old stale business model where agents are largely operating on their own while keeping larger commissions, with little support from their brokerage unless there’s a crisis to be managed. The Agency agents share a larger commission split with its brokerage partner. In return, there is a mass array of in-house sales, marketing, social media, public relations and advertising support that goes directly to their agents. This allows more time to be spent with clients directly and their properties rather than mired in necessary yet time-consuming administration functions. But the most compelling cultural shift is our proprietary shared customer and strategic databases. We are firm believers of sharing and helping one another rather than protecting our own individual fiefdoms. When you hire one of us, you’re getting an army of 300 with a single point of contact. If you want various points of contacts for targeted social media platforms as a preference, we can accommodate that as well.”
WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER YOUR MOST IMPORTANT PROFESSIONAL SKILLS? “Honesty—always tell the truth, as it will eventually come out anyway. And integrity—say what you do AND do what you say!” WHAT SPECIALTY SERVICES DO YOU OFFER CLIENTS? “I know new construction and renovation cost due to spending my own personal money on both. But the most important specialty service I provide is me. I have a strong and humorous personality that enables me to include extensive laughter with my clientele. Since we’ll be spending significant time together, I believe enjoying each other’s company is important. As such, I pick and choose the people I want to represent. If our personalities don’t mesh well from the beginning, chances are it won’t be a rewarding experience for either of us. I engage in a philosophy of being more things to fewer people rather than all things to all people. While I take my job very seriously, I don’t necessarily take myself too seriously.” HOW DOES WHERE YOU LIVE COME INTO PLAY WITH YOUR JOB? “Having lived in Encino for more than 25 years provides me intimate knowledge of specific streets, pockets within those streets and overall area expertise. Since I’m not running around greater Los Angeles on a regular basis, I am able to be more intimately involved with current on-and off-market properties. Additionally, I am frequently present for all showings and inspections once in escrow due to my proximity to the property.”
“Since we’ll be spending significant time together, I believe enjoying each other’s company is important.”
WHAT HAS BEEN ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF YOUR CAREER? “After running a national metal manufacturing firm for 30 years with my father, it culminated in a successful sale to our largest competitor and industry leader. Afterwards, as a relatively young man, the reinvention of myself and transition to full-time real estate has been my ultimate true calling. I honestly believe the first 30 years was the training ground for real estate. I have been in so many personal transactions as a buyer and seller; performing as an agent gives me unique experiential perspective to read and understand both sides of a deal.”
Give your neighbors something to talk about.

To Hang the Mistletoe…or Not An empty nester faces what is now an annual dilemma. WRITTEN BY LISSA KAPSTROM | ILLUSTRATED BY CHRISTINE GEORGIADES
The holiday season is upon us. You can feel it in the air. Well, not literally, because it’s 80° outside. Signs creep in around August, when the patio furniture and pool noodles that fill the aisles of Target are suddenly replaced with LED snowflake motion projectors and Star Wars holiday lawn inflatables. It’s a beautiful time of year. I get excited when the Frappuccinos start to turn from pumpkin to peppermint to gingerbread eggnog chai. But I’m not completely in a festive frame of mind until I hear “Let It Snow” playing at the gas station, and I decorate my house. I love to decorate. I used to do it professionally until decorating started to feel more like schlepping, carting lamps and rugs around and eating lunch in my car. When I discovered that as a writer I’d never have to get out of my chair—I could even dine at my desk—I pulled up a seat to my computer and haven’t gotten up since. But I still find joy in feathering my holiday nest. When I open my DWP bill and feel like passing out, the decorations remind me that ‘tis the season to be jolly, and I can complain to DWP next month. The best part of decking the halls was that my son enjoyed it too and always helped me. But now he’s in college. The idea of climbing a shaky ladder to get the ornaments out of the garage (without breaking my neck) just doesn’t seem that fun anymore. For my son and me, over the years, it became something of a routine. We’d begin in mid-October around the time the Pumpkin Recipe Dog Treats drop at Trader Joe’s. The two of us would make our annual pilgrimage to the pumpkin patch, pick our perfect specimens and then lovingly carve Homer Simpson and Mr. Burns

into their flesh. Thanksgiving would follow, feted by drawings of hand turkeys and more pumpkins sans the Simpsons. Then Christmas and Hannukah (we celebrate both) descend in what feels like only days after you put away your decorations from last year. We’d turn on music, and my son would happily don his “holiday helper” hat (okay, a little less happily once he was in high school) to assist me in putting out the menorah and decorating the Christmas tree. My husband would help too. He was in charge of putting the hooks on the ornaments, although after an hour, he’d sneak off to his office to play online chess. But that was okay. Holiday decorating was really something I loved doing because I saw the wonder of it through my child’s eyes. But now that he’s 3,000 miles away, I’m a little lost. Last year I didn’t decorate at all. Halloween and Thanksgiving came and went without a pumpkin or Pumpkin Recipe Dog Treat. And since my son’s winter break is so short because he tours with his college a cappella group, Christmas and Hannukah stayed unadorned as well. The season didn’t feel as jolly. In fact it was almost like the holidays never happened. And that was sad. So this year I’ve decided to get out the shaky ladder and interrupt my husband’s online chess game. And I’ll wear the holiday helper hat as we set up the menorah and hang ornaments on the tree. And I’ll see the wonder of it through my own eyes. Because I was a child once too. ■ Lissa Kapstrom is a TV comedy writer who lives in Sherman Oaks. She currently has a show in development.
