| Ferriss in LA

Mega Ferriss in LA Partner: Deepak Agrawal

Hugh Ferriss's moody, mysterious dream towers were always strangely more appropriate to the film noir landscape of Los Angeles than they were ever at home in the infinite grid of New York. This thesis starts with a collection of Ferriss-inspired forms and silhouettes and proceeds to mine their as-yet unrealized potentials through various transformations -- copy, scale, rotate, slice -- before setting them down in LA. It observes two issues shaping the development of metropolis. The increasingly crowded urban living environment with issues of access and justice has become difficult to ignore. Meanwhile, the power of FANG company has become considerably impactful to all aspects of urban living. This thesis addresses these concerns by combining hyperdensity with mega-scaled outdoor areas and multiplying the “grounds” we can occupy and share. The results become a series of architectural surprises: buildings nested within buildings rather than straight interiors divided from exteriors, mute exteriors without reference to the usual “human scale” of windows, doors, and balconies, and strange, playful relationships to the ground plane and the surrounding city. In this case, downtown LA becomes the ground to feature in the group of towers. Density is dramatically increased, the horizontal orientation of the existing context is challenged, and green spaces, plazas, and other areas for public life are multiplied above and below the single datum of the city’s existing pedestrian surface.

| Tom Wiscombe

The Metropolis of Tomorrow Type: Headerquater Extension Instructor:Tom Wiscombe Partner: Deepak Agwaral The project started with the study of Hugh Ferriss’s drawings from his book ‘The Metropolis of Tomorrow’. Sketches from his book focus on his imagination of an ideal city of the future with skyscrapers placed well apart from each other, broad avenues, and a coherent organization of building typologies. The project aims to look at the interiors more than the exteriors. The interiors of the Mega Building are designed as a city within a city. The existing buildings in NYC are scaled up 5 times larger and capsuled with Hugh Ferris tower which creates a weird juxtaposition between two and also the interior and exterior. This proposal seeks to imagine this city of mega buildings as a toy where the building parts click and lock to assemble or disassemble. The “METROPOLIS OF TOMORROW V2 OBM Expansion” adopted the model kit to the site, to design an office complex creating a striking new silhouette in the city. The building components are complete in themselves but also parts jammed into the main body, and the entire building docked into the site. The play of SCALE, MOVE, COPY and ROTATE allow to add complex interior spaces in the Hugh Ferriss structure. It considers Hugh Ferriss’s mega building as a shell, and the interior is treated with inner liners to add a dual effect and a dynamic circulation in the office. They extract the exterior into the interior rather than a conventional open-floor plan. Unlike a conventionally designed layout, the project engages the functions with the geometry and creates an innovative design.

Throwback Type: Headquarter Extension Instructor:Dwayne Oyler Partner: Ziao Zhou Imagined as part of a re-occurring investigation, Throwback takes an in-depth look at once popular materials that may not have fully reached their full architectural potential. With a single material serving as the subject for each semester's investigation, the objective of the seminar is to explore fresh design takes on the material, and an exploration (at real scale) of the fabrication methods necessary for inventive, experimental, and subversive applications. The materials explored intentionally look to some of the least fashionable subjects - glass block. Each of these materials had their heyday, finding their way into architectural projects along the way- but never fully reached their full design potential. The class will begin with independent research that looks at precedents for thematerial's use. How, when, and where was it used? What are its limits? How is it detailed? What are its structural properties? What material affects does it have that were not fully exploited? What are the variations on the product? Was its typical application re-imagined in any way?

| Form of Knowledge

Library of Co-existing Forms of Knowledge Type: Library Instructor: Elena Manferdini Partner: Kaiying Lin Contemporary libraries, however, are complex structures that have defied cultural expectations and evolved to integrate an expanding array of media collections and spaces for civic and democratic exchange. But this shift in rhetoric is also manifested in a shift in architecture and its attendant aesthetics. The idea, of the library as a ‘living room in the city’, has continually gained traction since the watershed moment of OMA’s Seattle Public Library. A central proposition of this studio is that strong architectural projects, at the scale of the city, are not only of interest to other architects but are a necessary and currently missing catalyst for a new urban vitality. Our proposal tries to refine the Central Library of Atlanta into a co-existing information container where encourage not only economy exchange but also emphasis unique experience of acquiring knowledge. As the 4.0 world focuses more on the virtuality and immersive experience, new technology and new materials become the representation of architectural language.

- Material Strategy The proposal tries to express the transparency of knowledge and collaboration through twofold. Firstly, the stunning exterior contrasts with the surrounding environment, forming new monumentality through primitive geometry. At the same time, Lightweight perforated aluminum panels and iridescent glass show the lightness and transparency of the building.

- Virtual Reality RoomThe room provides free access to internet resources and immersive experience 24/7. The large display engine seats in the middle of the room, providing visual contents to the visitors. The aluminum facade panels are projected with virtual screens, showing the newest social events, movies and activities.

Choosing Elbphilharmonie as the study example. several issues about the reflective facade of the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, even it generally rec ognises as a significant parametric projec t. The multiple layered prefabricated panels require a complex structure to weight. Two module units of windows are prefabric ated, whic h means mostly limitation regarding form variations. Thirdly, the facade itself require external materials which are the ceramic dots to solve the problem of glaring, whic h inc reases the cost of the building. Over-budget has been reported frequently due to complex parametric design process appears to less efficiency. In order to improve the c urrent variation of the glazing fac;ade and the heavy-weight issue of the materials. Plexiglass or so-c alled acrylic sheeting is c hosen as a lightweight and flexible material for fac;ade transformation. The plexiglass windows have 17 times the impact strength of traditional glass, which means stronger weather-proofing ability especially important for Hamburg where extreme weather condition happens.

Supernature Assistance - The Act of Devotion in an Age of Disbelief Instructor: Kavior Moon & Sebastian Clough

"It is quiet another when people are themselves the medium of ethnographic representation, when they perform themselves, whether at home totourists or at world’s fairs, homelands entertainments or folklife festivals—when they become living signs of themselves." —— Objects of Ethnography

This exhibition proposal approaches the idea of “ the act of divination” through a cohesive way of display.

The goal of this proposal is to purposely create the feeling of nostalgia and meditation, to evoke contemplation and memories. The title “supernatural assistance” poses a strong spiritual impression to both audiences and the designers.

The respectfulness and reverence are maintained in the display. The design concept of the exhibition is “parallel cosmology”. It is divided by the artists and their works. Considering the diversity of the display objects, cohesiveness would be the main character of the show by applying fewer types of materials: fabric and black partition walls, and less and simple lighting.

CONCEPT

Parallel Cosmologies

ETYMOLOGY Divination

“We are barely bodies”. -The Piraha Project

From English-Latin Dictionary, 1955 Latin Noun: divinatioons f.(dinvino) “the gift of prophecy, divination,” A movement “to foretell, prophesy, forebode, divine the future.” Adjective: divinus-a-um, “belonging or relating to a deity, divine.”

The design concept of the exhibition is “parallel cosmology”. It is divided by the artists and their works. Considering the diversity of the display objects, cohesiveness would be the main character of the show by applying fewer types of materials: fabric and black partition walls, and less and simple lighting.

Shaman noun: a traditional faith healer; a member of certain tribal societies who acts as a religious medium between the concrete and spirit worlds.

The proposal try to project a utopian national whole that harmoniously integrated regional disversity, a favorite theme of national ethnographic museums.

Shame noun: used as an uncomforable feeling to recognition or consciousness of impropiety, dishonor that makes this person awares og improper or indecent conduct.

Dazzling display of a realistic theme that subverting curatorial effotts to focus the viewer’s attention on particular ideas or objects.

Interjection: a cry of admonition for the subject of a speech, often used reduplcated, especially in political debates. Verb: to feel shame, be ashamed.

A Journey of An Image Instructor: Nick Webb

The location of the new pool is alongside the marine lake in West Kirby. People could overlook the Dee Estuary in a coastal town on the Wirral peninsula. It is a small town which is famous for its beautiful scenery and unique island landscaping. Various water sports take place here which is a perfect place for people to arrange a relaxing swimming pool to improve the overall quality of West Kirby. In order to cooperate the liveliness of the site, the proposal combines some associated spaces, notably an outside lido pool, since it is currently popular across the nation. The uniqueness of the project is a combination of playing area and meditation space. To be specific, spa design is feature thinking. A balance between dynamic and static activities are integrated within the design work, which tries to emphasize the importance of balance.

Recoding of Helix Instructor: Richard Dod

The site is a city block on the edge of Falkner Square, alongside Liverpool Womens’Hospital. It is recently announced that the Royal College of Physicians is to commission a center of excellence in Liverpool to serve the north of England. This will be their first newbuild since Lasduns’ tour-de-force, and they intend to build on the success of their recent past. In addition to the learned space, exhibition space is dominant as a reflection of the need to embrace new thinking and science in professional practice. From the outset, the intention was to encourage the general public to visit their premises and engage them through this exhibition rather than hideaway behind the closed doors of an elitist establishment. Hence, it would be essential to make the connection of traditions and modernity as well as consideration for medical learning output in the scheme.

The design is a public space installation located in Borneo, which combines the concept of local, regional weaving materials and dance in southeast Asia. Attempts to explore the possibility of weaving in different dimensions. This design also proves the possibility of combining traditional cultural with parametric design. At a given scale, from a point thick, like a tree trunk, the central activity space is formed. The weaving of threads is in negative area, and the lines of different colors form the woven continuum above. By changing the control curve, different suitable forms can be obtained according to various site conditions.

115

CONCEPT

ISSUE CNC BENDING MACHINE

1 CNC bending machine mold adjustment at the time, in a stationary state, in the course of their work increasing the difficulties, but if you want to adjust it, wrong contact would cause great damage to the mold. 2 During operation, bending sheet metal to ensure a balance and avoid a separate end of the sheet is compressed, this is abnormal sheet metal bending is a loss for the sheet, the CNC bending machine tooling and also costing. 3 At running time, the machine is prohibited to be adjusted. In the case of molding adjustment operation of the machine, the personal safety cause some risks. 121
