Courses for Adults Keys to Drawing Drawing helps one to understand the world. It is the foundation for painting and sculpture. This course will help develop the necessary drawing skills to enable one to enter into the flow of artistic creation. You will learn how to convey the illusion of light, depth and texture. Each session will offer guidelines that help to channel creative energies.

The practice exercises will engage the student in the process of drawing leading to the experience of creating something gratifying. All levels are welcome. Materials needed: Sketchbook (8.5" x 11"), HB-2B pencils, sharpener, straight-edge ruler and gum eraser.

NEW Beginning Ojibwe Language Ojibwe language beginner's class will help participants to learn a new, but old language of the Indigenous peoples who have inhabited this area known as Minnesota. Participants will learn how to read, write and speak the Ojibwe language from elder Christy Goulet who is an enrolled member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa.

You’ve seen the human figure. Get sent on the path toward becoming more adept at drawing people and the way you see them with comfort and ease, regardless of your artistic or creative level of expertise. Artistic principles such as line, shape, form and rhythm, and elements such as the human figure, scale, proportion and shading will be discussed. Materials Needed: A graphite drawing pencil set, a stick of charcoal, sketchbook or sketch pad and kneaded eraser.

What makes a great photograph? What is it about a picture’s subject or composition that makes it so arresting, mesmerizing or bold? Discover how you can capture stunning, stark and tender snapshots.

Capture images of nature, wildlife, places and people right away. All skill levels are welcome.

Courses for Adults Acrylic Painting Find your creative energy and build your confidence as you learn to paint with this waterbased medium. This introductory course in acrylic painting will teach you how to use brushes, mix colors and use a variety of different mediums. All levels of experience are welcome. This class will include individualized and group instruction based on what you are interested in learning. Materials Needed: Canvas/Paper, Brushes, Acrylic paint colors of choice.

Have you ever wanted to learn the guitar but simply find it difficult to find the time? In just a few hours you can learn enough about playing the guitar to give you years of musical enjoyment, and you won’t have to take private lessons to do it.

Visual art journaling is a fun, new way to record your experiences and tell your story as you tap into your creativity. Combine this with some simple techniques for capturing thoughts and ideas and you have the making of your own personal art journal. We will use simple techniques with pens, watercolors, and other mediums to create a journal. It can include both text and images from photos, sketches and other sources -- the possibilities are endless. Each lesson will have points to ponder, poetry reading, lessons for each page, some paper crafting and folding techniques and we will make 2 books. HOME & GARDEN Resilient Yard Series: Make and Paint Rain Barrel Workshop

Create a resilient yard to sustain the Red River by making and painting your own rain barrel. This is a two day workshop. On day one, participants will hear a short presentation about the basics of water quality and the effects of stormwater runoff, sand and put a base coat on their barrel. The second day, participants will build and paint their rain barrel.

Wear clothes you don't mind painting in and dress for the weather. Participants need a drill to install the rain barrel at home. Please bring a drill to the workshop. Participants can borrow a drill during the workshop, if needed. Fee includes all other supplies. Come prepared to carry home an empty 55-gallon barrel on the second day.

HOBBIES, HEALTH & FITNESS Wrestling Camp (Grades K-12) Students have the opportunity to learn wrestling technique from the Moorhead High School Wrestling coaching staff. Spuds Weightlifting Camp (Grades 7-12)

Athletes looking to improve their power and explosiveness for the sport of weightlifting and all other sports should attend this camp. The focus of the workouts will be improving mobility, olympic lifting movements, muscle growth, strength, power and speed. Learn from USA Weightlifting Level 2 Coach John Lubitz, MS, Kinesiology Sport Science. Most State Qualifying weightlifters attended this summer camp in the past, like National, Universities and World competitor Chrisanto D’Agostino.

Spud Recreational Gymnastics (Grades K-12)

Share your experience and follow Gymnastics can provide many cognitive and psychological benefits that will continue to benefit your child throughout their life. They learn social interaction, discipline, improved mental focus and concentration, flexibility and coordination.

Gymnasts will improve overall fitness, strength, balance and body control at class. Your child may be at a beginner, or advanced level of gymnastics to be eligible. The coaches will strive to provide a fun and challenging environment for your gymnasts as they practice appropriate skills on the vault, bars, beam and floor. Girls must wear a leotard and workout shorts. Beginners - First time gymnast, or intermediate skills. Advanced Student is able to perform a back walkover and a round off.

CLASSROOM DRIVER EDUCATION

Courses for Youth & Family

Classroom Driver Education Moorhead Area Public Schools’ Driver Education classroom program is open to high school students age 15 or older living in the Moorhead School District.

Register through the Community Education office, 2777 34th St. S., 218-284-3400.

Information sheets and registration forms also can be picked up at the Moorhead High activities office. Financial aid is not available through the district.

This 30-hour class prepares students for their instructional permit. Steps for people under 18 years of age to get a Minnesota driver's license: 1. Complete mandatory 30 hours of scheduled classroom instruction. Students cannot be absent or tardy when attending this course. A 90-minute parent component will be scheduled for this class in compliance with Minnesota law. If the parent class is taken then the practice driving hours are reduced from 50 hours to 40.

2. Register for behind-the-wheel training, with a private vendor and receive the blue card. The blue card is issued by the vendor providing the behindthe-wheel instruction and is required to take the state permit test.

3. Take and pass the state permit test. Students registering for the permit test must provide: one primary ID, one secondary ID and the blue card. Primary ID options: state issued ID, current passport or state certified birth certificate.

Secondary ID options: Social Security card, student ID with picture and ID number, or certified school transcript. Upon passing the permit test, making payment, and parent/guardian signature, students receive their permit.

4. Complete behindthe-wheel training.

Students must have a permit before they can start behind-the-wheel instruction.

5. Complete the sixmonth practice period.

Minnesota law now requires drivers to have a permit for six months before taking the road test. Every driver under the age of 18 who completes behind-the-wheel instruction and is testing for a provisional driver’s license must submit a driving log.

6. Pass road test. To take the road test, students must be 16 years old and have had their permit for six months. Drive on provisional license until qualifications for full license are met.

You must complete all 30 hours of scheduled class to be able to get your permit. If the 30 hours are not completed you will have to register and pay full price for the class again. No absences or tardies allowed. Please note location at registration.

AARP DRIVER SAFETY PROGRAM AARP SMART Driver 8-Hour First Time Course Driving has changed since you first got your license, and taking the SMART driver course could save you money. The SMART driver course is presented by AARP Driver Safety to seniors to assist them to stay safe drivers, taking into account all the changes that occur as they age. EARLY CHILDHOOD FAMILY EDUCATION What is Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE)?

It's a program for families with young children ages birth to kindergarten entry, offered by the Moorhead Area Public School District. ECFE offers a wide variety of classes and services to families. The current offerings are listed here. Put on your play clothes, call your friends and sign up now to begin building skills and making memories.

Class Fees

Small class sizes ensure personal attention, however Early Childhood Family Education classes fill quickly. Register early to secure your spot.

Tuition rates are indicated with each class description and are payable upon registration. All families are welcome.

Moorhead School District residents receive a reduced fee, which you will find in parentheses, behind the fee in each class description. Fee is per family except where noted.

Staff All ECFE instructors are licensed teachers. They each hold a minimum of a baccalaureate degree with specialized training in child and family development.

EARLY CHILDHOOD FAMILY EDUCATION

Spring/Summer Session Parent-Child -- Separating Classes The general format is the same for all classes. Parents and children spend the first hour of class together, working all of the activities the teacher and room provide. A special learning time called “circle time” may consist of music, finger plays, movement activities, a book, flannel board stories, puppets and anything else our teacher can dream up. The second hour, parents discuss topics of interest with each other and a licensed parent educator. Children enjoy play time with a licensed early childhood educator. *Note - You know your child best. For separating classes, if your child is not ready to seaparate, you are welcome to stay with your child the entire class time.

Family Connections

(Birth to kindergarten entry) Bring us your moms, dads, grandparents, infants, toddlers and preschoolers! We will enjoy our time together in theme-related activities, play and learning. Young children learn best by exploring materials firsthand.

NOTE: We are using a "Pay and installment plan" procedure. You are paying for half of the course at registration and your credit/debit card or checking account will be charged the balance on 5/1/2022.

Scholarship Information

Instructors

Moorhead Area Public Schools is hereby advising students, parents, employees and the general public that all employment, vocational and regular education opportunities will be offered without regard to race, color, creed, religion, national origin, sex, marital status, status with regard to public assistance, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, family care leave status or veteran status. The district also certifies that the Human Resources Office shall ensure that efforts are continually made to provide a drugfree environment. Employees and students will receive education and assistance as needed, and may be suspended, expelled or discharged for violations regarding drug use or policy violations. A limited number of scholarships are available to school district residents demonstrating extreme financial need. These scholarships may include Community Education classes and activities. They do not apply to Driver Education, AARP Smart Driver or Certificate courses. Application forms are available at the Community Education Office or by calling 218-284-3400.

High School Students

High school students are welcome to register for classes that don't have an age limit. All other students are welcome to attend classes that include their age in the description (usually found in youth and family section).

Acceptable Behavior

Unsafe behavior will result in immediate dismissal from the class.
