Communication Development in Kids Spring is a time of growth. Just like flowers need sunlight and water, children require help to build strong roots. The first five years of a child’s life are a period of incredible growth. Children begin communicating as newborns and continue to gain skill from their parents and surroundings. Check out these three tips to help your child’s language development from an article published by ZERO TO THREE. 1). Make it a conversation Pause as you talk with your child. This gives them a chance to respond. These pauses teach your child about back-and-forth communication. 2). Narrate your daily routines According to research, children who hear descriptive language before the age of four, develop a larger vocabulary. By narrating what you are doing, children will connect words with objects and actions. 3). Read to your child Not only is it a great way to spend quality time with your child, but research shows that children develop strong language skills through listening to stories. ZERO TO THREE is a global non-profit founded in 1977 by leading researchers and clinicians. Their mission is to ensure that all babies and toddlers have a strong start in life. Visit www.zerotothree.org to learn more. In addition to online resources, every parent needs personal connection and support. We invite you to expand your connections this spring through Early Childhood Family Education classes. Check out the upcoming class offerings on the following pages. Family Connections Classes (birth - kindergarten entry)

Class Structure: Parents and children spend the first hour together working on activities the teacher and room provides. Then we transition into circle time, which may consist of music, finger plays, movement activities, books, flannel board stories, puppets and anything else our teachers can dream up. The second hour parents discuss topics of interest with each other and a licensed parent educator. Children enjoy play time, remaining with a licensed early childhood educator. You know your child best. If your child is not ready to separate, you can stay with your child the entire class.

The Reading Corner Check out our top three books that will inspire you to head outdoors. Harlem Grown by Tony Hillery, Illustrated by Jessie Hartland Harlem Grown tells the inspiring true story of how one man made a big difference in a neighborhood. After seeing how restless they were and their lack of healthy food options, Tony Hillery invited students from an underfunded school to turn a vacant lot into a beautiful and functional farm. By getting their hands dirty, these kids turned an abandoned space into something beautiful and useful while learning about healthy, sustainable eating and collaboration. Five years later, the kids and their parents, with the support of the Harlem Grown staff, grow thousands of pounds of fruits and vegetables a year. All of it is given to the kids and their families. Planting a Rainbow by Louis Ehlert In this perennial classic with sturdy board book pages by Caldecott Honor–winning author Lois Ehlert, little ones learn the colors of the rainbow as they watch a plant grow in a beautifully vibrant garden. Through brilliant, textured cut paper collages, the story follows the progress of a mother and daughter in their backyard as they plant bulbs, seeds, and seedlings and nurture their growth into flowers. Bold, spare text and dazzling illustrations will inspire readers to take a closer look at the natural world and maybe even start a garden of their own.

The Fort by Laura Perdew, Illustrated by Adelina Lirius Can a pirate and a prince learn to share? In the fort in the woods, a prince is preparing his castle for a lively feast for the royal kingdom. Unbeknownst to him, a pirate uses the same fort as her ship, planning to venture out to the open seas in search of treasure. But when a treasure map appears on the prince’s party invitations, and the pirate finds that her sword has turned into a scepter, they realize there is an intruder in the castle―no, ship! Soon, a battle over the fort between the adversaries ensues, leading to a humorous showdown. When they make amends, their amazing imaginations come up with a new adventure…together.
