EN■
What happens when two children are looked after by an uncle who is a designer instead of their parents? Not only do they find that design surrounds them in their rooms, kitchen and living room, but pretty much at every turn. They also embark on an imaginary journey into the history of design and a real one to discover what design is made of and how it is made. They will answer questions about what caused the industrial revolution, where the first designers came from, or what the role of designers in society actually is.
For each material, be it glass, wood or porcelain, the authors of the book have chosen the story of one object that was made from this material in the past: the crystal chandeliers at the wedding of a French king, the famous bentwood chair or the urinal that became a work of art. The story of each of these objects has been given a comic treatment. In addition, you will find numerous illustrations throughout the pages of the book, including some that take you into the depths of factory halls and show how basic raw materials gradually become finished products. At the end of the book, you'll find out what the future of design might bring.
The publication is written by three authors. Jiří Pelc is a designer who has been a professor at the Academy of Arts and Crafts in Prague for many years. He has designed objects made of all kinds of materials. He has won several Czech Grand Design prizes for his work and is currently having a retrospective exhibition at the Moravian Museum of Decorative Arts. The gallery has been cooperating with the artist and illustrator Jiří Franta for a long time, his drawings can be found both in the aforementioned Museum of Decorative Arts and on the ceiling of the gallery library, which he created together with David Böhm. The third author, Silvie Šeborová, is also behind the book How to Paint an Egg: The Story of Josef Šíma. Together with the book How to Make a Gallery, it forms part of the Junior edition of How to Make Design. The graphic design was done by designer Štěpán Malovec.
The book is intended for children aged 7 and up. It can serve not only as a pictorial publication, which brings readers behind the scenes of the creation of objects that surround us in everyday life in an attractive and artistic form. It will also stand as a textbook that parents and adults will enjoy leafing through. The book is thus not only an indispensable part of the design exhibition, but also of every children's library.
