OVERVIEW Wearable and even implantable medical devices that monitor, administer, treat and track patient conditions are increasingly common replacements to large, complex instruments that, up until recently were restricted to use by medical technician or other qualified operators. These new wearable devices are portable, patient wearable, or implantable, with designers looking to implement low-power components, long-life rechargeable batteries, rugged designs, simple user interfaces and low overall cost in these devices . Also, with the patient as the intended user, these new products increasingly include design considerations typically associated with consumer-type products such as industrial design, ruggedness, user interface, portability and wireless connectivity.
These devices allow medical providers to offer preventive monitoring to the aged, monitoring for chronic disease management and general wellness, remote monitoring for susceptibility to conditions such as cardiac disorders before catastrophe strikes, can bring down the need for hospitalization and subsequent medical costs.
Wearable devices that work outside the confines of the hospital without expert medical assistance must fulfil a number of factors:
Usability: The device has to be worn on a continuous basis and must be therefore small and lightweight.
Design: The device must be elegant without the need to attach long wires and electrodes from the device to the patient and from the device to the mobile gateway that transmits data (to the remote medical care unit).
Power: The device should have low power consumption, reducing the need to frequently recharge and thus interrupt the monitoring process.
Cost: The device must be affordable to all the people to whom its usage is practical and essential.
The Market for wearable medical devices in Europe is set to grow to $ 2.2 Billion by the year 2019, with a phenomenal CAGR of 42.1 % during the forecasted period.
