3. MARKET OVERVIEW 3.2 MARKET DRIVERS 3.2.1 INCREASING PREVALENCE OF CHRONIC DISEASES Due to the changing demographic conditions there is an increase in the global aging population. This has increased the prevalence of chronic diseases like diabetes, rheumatism, or cancer which often needs parenteral drug usage. Administering these parenteral drugs at medical center or clinics puts a great strain on the healthcare systems budget and also on the patient’s quality of life. Prefilled syringes or auto injectors suitable for home treatment are therefore becoming more and more significant.
3.2.2 INCREASED DEMAND AND COST With close to 60% of the global population being 50 or above the demand for treatment for chronic diseases is on the rise. With this rise the pressure on costs are also going up. The rising cost in the healthcare system is turning to be a point of concern for healthcare providers as well as patients. These increasing costs are leading to the scenario called ‘patient cliff’. This is leading to increased dependence on generic versions of essential drugs which only cost half the innovators. In this case the prefilled syringes would be selected on the basis of cost with cheaper version selling more, making cost effectiveness a necessity
3.2.3 TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCES The drug delivery design is now shifting to incorporate more ergonomic design features to simplify the administration process for both patients and medical practitioners. In this context the vial and ampoule systems are being increasingly replaced by prefilled syringes and autoinjectors, which guarantee precise dosage and saves time as the medication need not be drawn into the syringe and there are no disposable needles to change. Another factor driving innovation is the primary packaging section which is seeing tougher safety requirement to prevent needle stick injuries, leading to the development of new primary packaging systems that are more ergonomic in nature and easier to use, plus the fact that using autoinjectors allows the medication to be provided at home for patients in need thus driving the overall costs down.

5.2 SELF INJECTABLE DEVICES 5.2.1 PREFILLED SYRINGES It is estimated that nearly 48000 deaths occur on an yearly basis due to nosocomial infections and the additional expenses incurred due to these nosocomial infections is nearly $8 billion. In light of these numbers it is not surprising that the market for Prefilled syringes has witnesses a significant growth in the recent times. This can be attributed to the immense advantage it possesses over the other forms of drug delivery. From an end user point of view prefilled syringes offer ease of administration and compliance benefits; from a pharmacy perspective prefilled syringes offer potential to avoid mixture related medical errors; from a manufacturer perspective, increased competition for scarce economic resources within healthcare system to provide for the additional requirements in the event that the product’s commercialization objectives are achieved. Although the market is relatively new, it accounts for about 25% of the total injectable drug delivery market on a global scale. Depending on the type of material used to manufacture the syringe barrel, prefilled syringes can be divided into two categories namely glass prefilled syringes and plastic (polymer) prefilled syringes. It is expected that the use of plastic prefilled syringes will increase significantly in the near future. Developed markets of US and Europe account for more than 83% of the global prefilled syringes market in 2014. Prefilled Syringes market is forecasted to grow significantly during the period of 2014-2019. The market is valued at nearly $4.5 billion in 2014. It is expected to grow at a CAGR of 11.91%.
