INTRODUCTION Although the clinical manifestations of autoimmune diseases have long been known, the concept that the body's own immune system was responsible did not become established until reproducible experimental evidence began to be obtained from the mid-1960s onwards. Put in the simplest terms autoimmune disorders occur when the body's immune system turns against the body itself, attacking as if it were a foreign pathogen. The autoimmune disorders comprise more than 80 distinct diseases and syndromes, and affect about 5% of the population in Europe and North America, with two thirds of the patients being female. The National Institutes of Health estimates that up to 23.5million Americans suffer from autoimmune disease and that the prevalence is rising. The American Auto Immune Related Disease Association estimates this number to be close to 50 million. The difference in estimation is basically due to the fact that the NIH numbers only include 24 diseases for which good epidemiology studies are available whereas the AARDA numbers encompass a more inclusive list of disorders. It is also identified that of this population living and coping with autoimmune disorders close to 75% are women. Autoimmune disease is one of the top 10 leading causes of death in female children and women in all age groups up to 64 years of age in North America. The NIH estimates the annual direct health care costs for autoimmune disorder diagnostics and therapeutics to be in the range of $100 billion (source: NIH). In comparison, cancers costs are $57 billion (source: NIH, ACS), and heart and stroke costs are $200 billion (source: NIH, AHA). The North America autoimmune disease diagnostics market is estimated to grow by a CAGR of 11.28% during the forecasted periodand reach $18.2 million by 2019 from $10.5 million in 2012. In 2014 the market is estimated to hit $12.8 Million.

SYSTEMIC AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE DIAGNOSTICS SEGMENT The systemic or non-organ-specific autoimmune diseases were initially described, characterized and categorized using the features present in the history obtained from patients who suffered from them, and the findings on clinical examination. The disease definitions take into account also the clinical course of the conditions, and the findings on detailed laboratory investigation using various kinds of laboratory tests. Although the diseases have been categorized into certain types, the situation is made complicated by the fact that, there is great variation amongst patients because:
Different combinations of the many clinical manifestations of any given condition may be present in different patients
The severity of any given clinical manifestation varies greatly between patients
The severity of any given clinical manifestation can change in the same patient over time
Overlap syndromes may exist between separate conditions, or evolve in a given patient
1. Rheumatoid arthritis Arthritis is the most common cause of disability among U.S. adults and is particularly common among persons with multiple chronic conditions.Around 22.7 % of the population in the USA suffers from RA, i.e., 1 in every 5 people. It is estimated that by the year 2030 nearly 67 million Americans aged 18 years or older are projected to have doctor-diagnosed arthritis. In 2010-2012 49.7% of the population aged 65 or above were diagnosed with Arthritis and though it is an autoimmune disease affecting people in the later stage of their lives it is not limited to the aged population with nearly 294000 children aged less than 18 years of age having some form of arthritis.
Rheumatoid arthritis can be difficult to diagnose in its early stages for several reasons. First, there is no single test for the disease. In addition, symptoms differ from person to person and can be more severe in some people than in others. Also, symptoms can be similar to those of other types of arthritis and joint conditions, and it may take some time for other conditions to be ruled out. Finally,

the full range of symptoms develops over time, and only a few symptoms may be present in the early stages. As a result, doctors use a variety of tools to diagnose the disease and to rule out other conditions.
