Letter from the President Dear members of the Moreau community, In thanksgiving for all you do for Moreau Catholic High School, I greet you with the Fall 2011 issue of the Vector, which includes our annual report for 2010-11. These pages are filled with all the exciting things that are happening on campus today, mixed with some news about alumni, former teachers and staff, and a huge amount of “thank yous” for the generosity of time, talent and treasure we received from so many over the past year. The annual report lists all the wonderful people who have supported the mission of Moreau—by contributing to the Moreau Fund, our annual fund that helps support the operating budget of the school by funding the gap between the cost to educate each student and the tuition we collect. I am so proud to report that 100% of the members of the Board of Trustees, board committee members, and the faculty and staff gave to the Moreau Fund again last year. This is an amazing statistic, and a testament to the dedication of our teachers, staff and volunteers. Others contributed to the many scholarships we offer, such as the Brother Gary Stone, CSC Scholarship, funded through the annual Moreau Golf Tournament and individual gifts. And still others donated to the Teves Theater renovation, completed over the summer and ready for the performing arts concerts this fall and winter. Just recently, our annual student fundraiser exceeded its goal, with over 74% of our students participating. We are very blessed to have such a wonderful community. On behalf of the Board of Trustees and the Brothers of Holy Cross, I thank everyone for their contributions and for their good wishes for the work we do each day in support of our students. Finally, I extend to you all an invitation to Homecoming on October 28th. Come out and support the Mariner football team as they take on John Swett High School, mingle with fellow alumni and teachers, and bring the kids for Halloween fun and treats. We send blessings to you and your family during this autumn season. And again, our thanks for all you do for Moreau Catholic—it is deeply appreciated! Best regards,
Terry Lee President

When the end-of-day bell
rings at 2:35pm, Moreau students are a flutter of activity rushing to practices, appointments, and club meetings. Although many students seek out their teachers for extra help at the end of the day, this is no longer the only time available for students to brush up on difficult concepts with their teachers. Digital tools of the 21st century are making it possible for students to receive 24/7 synchronous and asynchronous help from teachers and peers. The growth of online learning at Moreau Catholic continues at amazing speed as our teachers incorporate e-books, interactive online databases, and a wealth of digital resources into the curriculum.
Moodle, Moreau Catholic’s course management system, has been the most apparent instrument in the effort to connect students to school resources on a 24/7 basis. In use since school year 2007-2008, this online repository for course information, assignments and connections among students and teachers has grown in popularity each year as teachers and students find new ways to use its “always on” capabilities to complement the teaching and learning that goes on in classrooms during the school day. Currently more than 130 courses comprising over 300 sections of students are using Moodle’s capabilities. Scheduled chats with teachers on the night before tests, online reviews and access to help sessions with both classmates and teachers are just some of the ways that Moodle helps expand learning beyond the boundaries of the traditional classroom. Visit moreaucatholic.org/cecilTF to view how Fr. Bruce Cecil, CSC uses Moodle in his classes.
In AP chemistry, students are experiencing a flipped classroom. By night (at home), students listen to Ms. Couling’s lectures via screencast. By day (at school), students put their newfound knowledge learned from the previous night’s online instruction to use by working on problems with their teacher and their peers. The traditional stand and deliver class format transforms into one that is highly interactive and dynamic. Ms. Couling is then present to guide and direct as students are working through the application and synthesis of their learning. Visit moreaucatholic.org/coulingTF to view how Moodle enables the flipped classroom.
Google Documents enables students in Mrs. Tornabene’s English class to receive real-time feedback via Google’s instant chat feature as both the student and Mrs. Tornabene view the same shared document. Unlike receiving feedback on a paper after it has been graded, students are able to immediately incorporate the feedback, elevating the learning experience from passive to active. Classroom instruction/activities can now be easily recorded or streamed live online. During the second week of school, the U.S. History classes received instruction from the library team on using primary and secondary sources. This instruction was recorded and uploaded to YouTube for students to view at a future point of need as well as allow absent students to stay on top of their studies.

The mandatory Tech Camp for incoming students is a great example of how Moodle can serve as a virtual space for online learning during the school day and then be used as an ongoing resource for “Just In Time” training. Since all of the content for Tech Camp is comprised of short video tutorials which are supplemented by online assignments and in class support, students can return to the curriculum at any time for a refresher on any of the topics which were introduced during summer Tech Camp.
The 24/7 school
enables continuous learning for not just students but for teachers too. Teachers at Moreau are developing their own personal learning networks (PLNs) to stay connected with professionals in their field. Social networking sites like Twitter and Google+ as well as online educational communities like EdWeb and Classroom 2.0 provide a platform to learn/share best practices and innovative ideas with educators around the world. We also recognize how busy our parent community is and the need to move beyond the typical school day to provide opportunities for parents to connect and learn. Similar to their students, they also have 24/7 access to tools to help them serve as partners in their student’s educational journey. Parents can take advantage of the school’s knowledge base by visiting the Parent Resources Page of the school: www.moreaucatholic.org/ParentResources.
Parents will find links to presentations from past Parent Club meetings, as well as connections that offer help for setting boundaries with students, managing internet filtering from home and using strategies to optimize students’ Internet use.
Coming Soon
The Instructional Technology Department will be launching new screencast recordings this year that will demonstrate on a step by step basis how to take advantage of many of these resources. These recordings will also be available on the Parent Resources web page and will serve as a Just In Time training tool for parents who are seeking more detailed help on these topics. Look for our Parent Club Training screencasts to launch during the second quarter of school. More and more, the tools available to our community make it possible to expand the parameters of learning beyond the walls and time constraints of the traditional classroom. And though teachers are empowered to personalize their instruction to the needs of their specific curriculum, it is perhaps most encouraging that these tools place the learner at the center of their own learning, responsible for creating the most conducive environment for connecting with the desired knowledge, whether that is on or off campus at any hour of the day.

Interdisciplinary Coursework for 21st Century Students STEM is the interdisciplinary focus between Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. At its core, a STEM curriculum focuses on real-world problem solving utilizing aspects from all disciplines, leaving room for creativity, and allowing students to determine not only the correct answer, but also their own method of finding it. According to the STEM-Ed Caucus led by Congressman Vern Ehlers (R-MI) and former Congressman, now Senator Mark Udall (D-CO), “The foundation of innovation lies in a dynamic, motivated and well-educated workforce equipped with skills in science, technology, engineering and math. Today, an understanding of scientific and mathematical principals, a working knowledge of computer hardware and software and effective problem solving skills are necessary for most jobs”. At Moreau Catholic, over 25% of the course offerings are in the area of STEM. Starting this 2011-2012 school year, we are proud to add two additional courses to that curriculum list.
Green Engineering
is a course that serves to deepen students understanding of engineering. It can either follow the Engineering Design course, which is in its second year, or be taken independently. Green Engineering provides students the opportunity to explore engineering design and problem solving with a focus on solar energy, water transport, storage systems, purification, green building, and alternative energy vehicles. Students will come away with a mastery of the engineering design process and the knowledge and tools to apply green concepts to engineering projects. Utilizing the instructional principles of project-based learning, the class will be building a model green house, and making fuel cell cars. These are just a couple of examples where application is at the core of the learning. In addition to considering how engineering connects with math and science, students will also be analyzing how these technologies impact society. Through written argumentative reports, presentations, and debates, students will be challenged to test their assumptions and defend their hypothesis.

Game Analysis and Design is the second course being added to Moreau’s STEM curriculum. As the computer continues to evolve, becoming more and more an integral part of society, the video game has also grown to play a significant role in student’s life. It is rapidly becoming a popular instructional tool throughout the business industry, a training tool for nurses and doctors, and is even being used in military simulation exercises. Thus, it is important to maintain a critical eye when evaluating and analyzing this rapidly growing field. This course will challenge students to consider the sociological aspects of gaming, analyzing single-user and multi-user interfaces, the psychological impact through the lens of human computer interaction, and the engineering design aspects of building a game. While analyzing a variety of games for entertainment and educational purposes, students will begin to develop an academic vocabulary used in collegiate programs to assess the science and aesthetics used to build a gaming world. Utilizing their knowledge of mathematics, physics, and engineering, students will then build both a 2-D and 3-D game as their culminating assessment.

Moreau Catholic students used this collaborative, hands-on approach to examine food deserts in low-income neighborhoods. A food desert is a food environment that doesn’t support good health; it is defined by barriers which restrict access to healthy foods such as income disparity and lack of grocery stores. Eighty students from two disciplines—religious studies and A.P. Statistics—put their hands in the dirt. They conducted online research, developed interactive maps, attended an expert panel and blogged with their peers about the intersection of poverty, nutrition, and the issue of access to healthy food in low-income communities. MCHS sent them on a multi-destination field trip through Hayward, San Leandro, and West Oakland to visit school and urban gardens. The project was the joint venture of theology teacher, Amy Armstrong, and statistics instructor, Barb Mangiardi, who began developing the interdisciplinary challengebased learning unit last year. Even before the field trip, both Armstrong and Mangiardi began seeing evidence of the power of interdisciplinary curriculum paired with realworld challenges. “The stat students are actually eager to conduct statistical analysis on this issue,” said Mangiardi. “They’re emotionally invested in the learning, and that’s what interdisciplinary and challenge-based learning are all about,” Armstrong added. The students had a youth-led tour and vegetable tasting at Tennyson High School’s Project EAT. They continued with visits to Dig Deep Farms, a project through Alameda County Sheriff’s Activity League, Mandela Marketplace, a West Oakland umbrella organization that includes WYSE (West Oakland Youth Standing Empowered) and the Mandela Marketplace Co-operative grocery. What solutions did the students develop in response? Time will tell.
One of the gardeners at Hayward Community Gardens donned a beekeeper suit and showed the class one of the hives.

A vibrant club scene
at Moreau Catholic is a testimony to the philosophy of the student life program as a whole. Simply put, there is something for everyone at Moreau. Involvement in clubs enables our students to explore new ideas, interests and hobbies. They are excellent ways to pursue varied interests, learn about social responsibility and meet new friends. Father Moreau’s mission to provide students with opportunities to grow academically, spiritually, and socially extends to the forty-five clubs on-campus, which are designated as academic, social, cultural, or spiritual. There are also many clubs that are service-oriented, with most of their activities and events centered on giving back to the local and global community. During the 2010-11 school year, MCHS clubs collectively raised more than $3,000 for various charitable organizations, and created innumerable opportunities for student involvement and participation. In September, Nuestra Gente organized a Mexican Independence Celebration where students enjoyed traditional food while learning about Mexican dance with a ‘banda’ performing on campus. Interact Club created a successful “Trick or Canning” campaign during Halloween, and later spearheaded “Operation Christmas Child”, where over 100 boxes filled with supplies were collected and shipped to third world countries in need. In February, the African American Alliance hosted a Black History Month Presentation. This presentation gave our students an opportunity to join local community members to teach about African-American leaders and crucial aspects of African-American history.
One of the major goals of the Student Life Clubs at Moreau Catholic is to not only provide students with different avenues of involvement, but also to create leadership opportunities for students through elected positions. Every club elects a leadership council, where students learn how to run meetings, execute fundraisers, plan events, and budget appropriately for activities. Whether students are looking to enhance their leadership skills, or just participate in a fun activity, one thing is for certain—they can find a club at Moreau Catholic that helps them thrive. —Katie Teekell

The African American Alliance (AAA) is a club that celebrates and educates the heritage of AfricanAmericans. Last year, AAA had a strong presence on campus and was moderated by faculty member, Coach Frank Knight, and led by Moreau graduate, Urayah Bellow ‘11 as President, and Asha Smith ‘12 as Vice President. During AAA meetings we discussed prominent leaders who made a significant difference in history, such as Martin Luther King Jr., Maya Angelou, Barack Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Madam C.J. Walker, Rosa Parks and many others. We worked to share this with the entire Moreau community. We also spent time organizing community service opportunities, a Black History Month all-school assembly, and an all-school lunch BBQ. This year, with Tina Comic ‘12 as President and Lauren Bellow ‘13 as Vice President, the AAA Club would like to continue to focus on educating the students on prominent African-American leaders. We also hope to enlighten the school on the history of AfricanAmericans and the importance of their role in society. We are planning another assembly this year during Black History Month to recognize the long journey that African-Americans have endured. The club is also planning on recruiting more members so that we can be even more effective and impactful. We would like to get a lot of involvement from our students, faculty, and alumni—people of all races and backgrounds are welcome! —Christina Comic ‘12
Luis Gonzales, modern language teacher, is Nuestra Gente’s moderator.
Nuestra Gente is a club that embraces the Hispanic culture and educates the community on Hispanic history. Last year, Nuestra Gente received the “Club of the Year” award at the Academic Assembly. This award is given to a club that goes above and beyond in service to the community, activities on campus, and leadership. One of our first activities last year was celebrating Mexican Independence Day by selling sweet Mexican pastries known as buñuelos. The club also performed during Culture Week at Moreau and at a local elementary school. We also hosted Hayward City Councilman Mark Salinas, who gave an inspirational talk and encouraged us to aspire to greatness and to get involved with our community. Nuestra Gente is unique because it is the only Hispanic club at Moreau and because it strives to enrich the minds of the students. Our club has members from every Hispanic country and even some individuals of other ethnicities too. Our events give people an opportunity to experience the richness of our culture. Last year, we increased membership in the club, developed a club logo, purchased sweatshirts for our members, and increased our funding. Through hard work we were able to be successful and develop new leaders. We collaborate, communicate, organize, plan and prioritize all of our club affairs. We feel that we make a difference as we foster relationships within our club and the school. —Karina Sanchez ‘12 and Crystal Esparza ‘12

Dennis Retallick ‘11— Passion Meets Opportunity I started my freshman year at Moreau Catholic High School in 2007. It was the beginning of the one-to-one student laptop program and the grand opening of the state-of-the-art TV production studio, MCTV. Since I’m a techie at heart, I immediately knew Moreau Catholic was the place for me. I was not eligible to take the MCTV Video Arts classes until my junior year, but that was not going to stop me from getting into the studio to check everything out. I became friends with Mr. Paul McKenna ‘83, the Technology and Media Arts Chair. Mr. McKenna encouraged my interest in learning how the studio worked, encouraged me to ask questions and to touch buttons before I was even eligible to be in his classes. During my junior year, I bypassed the MCTV Video 1 Class and went directly into MCTV Video 2. I spent my first semester running the audio board and learned everything I could about the equipment. Eventually, I would trouble shoot and help produce the MCTV weekly broadcasts. I was also introduced to Snader and Associates, Inc., the company that designed and installed the MCTV studio and upon graduation, I was offered an internship. I am currently pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering. Thanks to Moreau’s MCTV Media Arts program and to my mentor, Mr. McKenna, I have acquired a lot of hands-on experience, gained a wider understanding of studio technologies and consequently, have a great chance of obtaining a job in the television broadcast industry. Thank you to everyone who contributes to this program and to the many other things that make Moreau Catholic such an amazing school.

Jennifer Rillamas ‘11— Making Waves Thank you for making it possible for me, and many other students receiving Tuition Assistance, to attend Moreau Catholic. Four years ago, I was a shy freshman who had no idea what I wanted to do or be when I grew up, but by becoming involved in all that Moreau had to offer, I gained the necessary tools to guide me on my way. Through programs like Student Ambassadors, Link Crew, and Student Government, I learned how to be a leader and take initiative. During volleyball and track season, I discovered the true meaning of Scholar Athlete and learned how to hold myself accountable to my peers. At mass, on retreat and in my theology classes, I developed a sense of who I am morally and spiritually. As I begin the next chapter in my life, College: I am thankful for how prepared I feel for what is ahead. Watch out world, Moreau Mariners are known for making waves, and I am determined to start making some of my own.
—Jennifer Rillamas ‘11 Jennifer was an active member of Link Crew, Moreau Catholic’s award-winning program to support incoming Freshmen.

ESSENTIAL Charitable gifts to Moreau Catholic are essential to the school and our students. Annual giving provides the funds to support programs and services that can’t be funded any other way. Tuition covers 89% of the cost to educate each student and the number of students needing tuition assistance has more than doubled in recent years.
We value
and need your support. Invest in Moreau students by making your gift today.
“Being a recipient of the Robert Collins Scholarship has been a wonderful blessing for my family and me. Thank you so much! The scholarship provided my family with financial help for two years at Moreau and for the next two years in college. Moreau Catholic has been such a great help in providing me the resources and opportunities to follow my dreams.” —Andrea Aranzamendez ‘12
Scholarship Funds, Endowments and Memorial Gifts A number of special funds have been established at Moreau Catholic to provide tuition assistance and merit-based grants for students. Many of these funds were named in honor, or in memory of a beloved Mariner family, alumni or faculty member. Gifts to the following funds were received between July 1, 2010 and June 30, 2011.
Brother Gary Stone, CSC, began teaching at Moreau Catholic in 1970 and held a variety of positions, including Moreau’s vice principal. He died of cancer in 1979 at the age of thirty-nine. In 1982, in honor of his work in classroom, his admirable character and the many lives he touched, the Brother Gary Stone Memorial Scholarship Fund was created. The annual Moreau Golf Classic raises money for this endowed scholarship for up to two students from each grade level per year.
Ronald and Cheryl Zielinski established a scholarship in memory of their son, Robert, who attended Moreau Catholic. The memorial scholarship recognizes a student who is committed to the pursuit of a career in journalism. The 2010-11 recipient was Adriana Jones Lima.

I chose to come to Moreau Catholic for several reasons; one being the Performing Arts department. I couldn’t wait to sing in the choir. Teves Theatre quickly became my second home in my freshman year as I sang in the Women’s Choir and in the Spring Musical. One of my earliest memories was not just the squeaking of the seats but watching parents and friends coming in with pillows to sit on. My most memorable time was working with my dad during the renovation as we unscrewed the old seats and put all the parts in a huge pile. When school started this year and I walked into the new theatre and I couldn’t believe my eyes. The renovation of the theatre was beyond what I could have ever dreamed. The seats, curtains and colors left me feeling that our theatre is now a place of comfort and inspiration. As I begin my sophomore year I look forward to sharing concerts, recitals, performances, and musicals with my friends, family and fellow Mariners in a theatre I am proud to call my second home. Thank you Mom and Dad for sponsoring a seat in my honor. Thank you to each of you who generously donated to transform the Teves Theatre.

bringing to New Orleans
The Annual Holy Cross Immersion is an opportunity for the five Holy Cross Schools of the South-West Province to gather together in service, reflection and prayer. Each year the immersion experience is hosted in a different city and is inspired by one of the four Holy Cross themes. It was especially fitting that this year’s theme, Bringing Hope, took students and staff to New Orleans, Louisiana. Campus Ministry Director, Ms. Ann Khristine Tabora; Campus Ministry Team members Brandon English ‘12; Marianna Alfaro ‘12; Morgan Lander ‘12; Chariz Seijo ‘12 and Katrina Sison ‘12; and Mr. Tony Rodriguez, theology teacher, were this year’s representatives from Moreau Catholic.
In 2005, Hurricane Katrina claimed 1,836 lives, displaced thousands of families and destroyed entire communities. Being in New Orleans gave Moreau Catholic students an opportunity to directly experience the long-term after effects. Through caring for the elderly at St. Luke’s Medical Center, painting and restoring homes in the parish of St. Bernard, shaping trees, pruning and weeding in the Ninth Ward, and visiting the original, devastated “A s soon as I got home I star site of the Holy Cross School in New Orleans, Mariners saw ted to th in k of to contr ibute ways arou nd my h that hope, faith and love remained strong in a community ouse and ar the school.” ou nd working to rebuild itself. “This powerful experience changed our —Brandon Engl ish ‘12 perspective on what it means to be a family. Students and staff learned firsthand how it feels to be part of something bigger, something beyond themselves,” reflected Ms. Tabora. Although they were 2,200 miles away from their own homes, Moreau students gained a deeper understanding of the word community. The 5-day Immersion program required the participants to live simply: to eat simply-prepared food, sleep on floors, pack a lunch for the workday and do manual labor in hot weather and in uncertain conditions. Katrina Sison ‘12 admitted that she was nervous at first: “I didn’t know what to expect or even what activities I would be participating in.” She found strength in the Campus Ministry Team’s motto: Trust the Process. It in life and I got e os rp pu a helped her to stay focused, committed and open n ve “We all are gi .” re he be to ed os to a new experience. Each of the participants supp to see why I was ‘12 —Morgan Lander stepped out of their comfort zone—whether it was by giving manicures and pedicures to the elderly, conversing with dementia patients, painting a house in 109-degree heat, or opening up during reflection time. For Morgan Lander ‘12 it meant conversing with one of the men in elderly care who reminded her so much of her grandfather. She expressed that it was one of the most touching and significant moments of the trip. “We all are given a purpose in life and I got to see why I was supposed to be here,” she reminisced. Ms. Tabora cautioned the immersion participants before the trip: “This is not for the faint of heart. You have to show fortitude and internal strength.” During the week, the students were challenged to reflect on their own privilege, to think about the interactions they were having and to ponder questions such as: “Where did you see hope today?” or, “What about today changed your perspective on children, the elderly or the poor?” 24
The Vector | Fall ‘11
Indeed, It was grueling to respond to such weighty questions after a long day of physical labor and mental exhaustion. However, the effort yielded some of the most powerful and transformational moments of the trip. The students from all of the Holy Cross Schools bonded with each other, shared personal and emotional reflections, cried together, and consoled one another. Another milestone in an unforgettable week was a visit to the original campus of this year’s immersion host, the Holy Cross School, New Orleans. A college preparatory school for boys in grades 5-12, the campus on Dauphine Street was the site of the oldest boys school in New Orleans. When the levee broke during Hurricane Katrina, the property suffered catastrophic water damage and the school was forced to relocate. Some of the boys participating in this year’s immersion program were 5th rleans graders during Katrina and although they hadn’t been back since in New O e c n nce r ” ie r e p the disaster, they retained very vivid memories of the tragedy and Life Enhaz Seijo ‘12 a “My ex e m o c e —C hari e to b of their beloved campus. Upon arriving at the old campus, Moreau inspired m students observed the Holy Cross boys reminisce in silence and saw their expressions transformed by melancholy. “It was a powerful moment that gave everyone a deeper understanding of family. In the silence, you could see the sense of loss and what the experience had cost them. But, you also saw the transformation that they have gone through and that was equally powerful,” shared Ms. Tabora. Dr. George Hayes, a civil rights activist, also enriched the immersion experience with a talk on ‘Becoming a Life Enhancer.’ By the end of the week, each Moreau student left with a strong conviction to make a difference in the world. Brandon English ‘12 conveyed his resolve: “I was so impacted by the term ‘Life Enhancer’ that as soon as I got home I started to think of ways to contribute around my house and around the school. I became especially interested in helping out our new freshmen.” Katrina Sison ‘12 was similarly affected: “I realized that all that I do has the potential to help someone in need. I felt like my purpose on this trip was to learn about what I can do to truly make a difference.” The 2011 Holy Cross Immersion provided Moreau Catholic’s students “I r ea l i with an opportunity to contribute to a community in need, to establish z ed t h a t all tha p o t e nt i a bonds and relationships and to truly live out the mission of the Brothers t I do h l to help a s t he s o me o n of the Holy Cross. Additionally, it allowed the students to see what e i n ne e d.” Bringing Hope looks like through the eyes of a community working —K atr in a Sison ‘1 2 to rebuild itself. Ms. Tabora summed up the essence of the experience: “We met people whose lives we changed for the better and in turn, after hearing their stories, our lives were also enriched; our perspective on what it means to be family and what it means to have hope grew and
we were transformed.”

Christian Community Service
Each sophomore spends a day with their Moral Theology class at St. Anthony’s Dining Room in the Tenderloin District of San Francisco. Throughout the year, students, faculty and staff are given opportunities to donate time or items such as books, canned goods or toys to different causes.
The goal of the Christian Community Service (CCS) program at Moreau is to challenge students to be involved in their local communities by volunteering at non-profit agencies. At the end of their four years, each student will experience a variety of service opportunities that will help them identify their individual gifts and talents.
SweatMonkey is an online platform dedicated to connecting students to their communities and allowing them to track and get credit for the work they have done. Students can learn about local and national organizations and find causes that truly interest them.
Students are able to post and sign up for service opportunities using the website www.sweatmonkey.org. This site also allows students to log their service hours online and to keep track of how many hours they have completed. In addition to sweatmonkey.org, the Faith and Service page on the MCHS website lists dozens of community service opportunities. By providing students with ample resources to find new and innovative ways to give back to society, Moreau Catholic truly lives out its mission to transform students into responsible citizens of our global community. If you are interested in sharing a volunteer opportunity with the school, please contact Mrs. Katie Teekell, Assistant Principal of Student Life, at kteekell@moreaucatholic.org.

A Reflection
on Christian Community Service
By Samhita Nanduri ‘12
“No Tanks!” screamed Thomas as he ran across the room to pick up his Frog and Toad book—his new obsession. As I laughed, Gurshan tapped on my shoulder. “Escoose me, Ms. Sam. I need fork peease!” At first glance, all of these kids seem just like all kids their age: cheerful eyes, backpacks with the latest Pixar characters, and the immeasurable amount of energy that defines their age. However, by taking one look at their flailing arms and lack of social or motor skills, it becomes obvious that these kids are special. What sets them apart from a “normal” second grader is autism. For over two months, I worked with a class that educated autistic children. I assumed a position similar to an aid in the classroom, supervising and teaching. And soon, I witnessed a comfort that these kids felt in their daily schedule that would reverberate in me.
By the end of the first week, I experienced what I had never thought would be necessary to experience. Not only did I learn of Thomas’ hilarious fear of Shrek and spaghetti, but I also felt a need to be accepted by these kids. When Gurshan and Charlene walked in the door and said, “Good morning, Ms. Sam,” it began to feel more and more like home. These students were not only changing my perspective on volunteering; they were changing me, as well. Initially, volunteering seemed like the perfect activity that would look great on my college applications. But as I left the classroom, I was left with the yearning to come back, the memories outweighing the hours. The summer before my junior year, I worked with eight autistic kids. In two months, I gained a new insight on autistic people that outweighed the sum of my volunteer hours. As it turns out, they are not so different from me. Hard-working and energetic, these kids became my “flashlight”—shining with an aimless brightness until they revealed what was at first impossible to see. I know this experience will stay with me through all of the endeavors I take on in the future.
In August, Moreau Catholic High School Faculty and Staff gathered in retreat to mark the beginning of a new school year. Following in the Holy Cross theme of Bringing Hope, our faculty and staff spent the day at the Motherhouse of the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose. In addition to painting 46 of the Sister’s rooms, the faculty and staff had the opportunity to spend time with the Dominican Sisters; sharing a meal and participating in a mass in honor of the feast day of St. Dominic. The Dominican Sisters are dedicated to a ministry of providing an education to the poor and helping to prepare students for a better future. Spending the day with them was a great reminder of the importance of serving our community and giving back to those who have committed their lives to serving others.

Their mission continues in Austin, Texas. —by Terry Lee
Two Holy Cross Brothers who spent many years working at Moreau Catholic High School and living on the third floor of the school have been spending their recent years continuing much of that same work for their fellow Brothers in Austin, TX. Brother Tom Frey, CSC and Brother Thomas Cousino, CSC recently recalled fond memories of their time at 27170 Mission Boulevard. I got to spend some quality time with these two inspirational men during the blistering hot Texas summer. I was there for the annual Holy Cross Conference for Student Leaders and the Holy Cross Institute’s Mission Seminar for teachers and staff of Holy Cross schools in the United States. I first met up with Brother Thomas Cousino in a garage across from the Brother Vincent Pieau Residence, the retirement center for the Brothers of the South-West province. Brother Thomas’ garage is a veritable hardware store/machine shop/handyman’s wonderland! He has every tool he needs to repair, adjust, fashion, repurpose or recondition anything that is brought to him. I marveled at his energy and determination to take care of the needs of his fellow Brothers, and anyone who might need something fixed. At age 83, he shows no signs of slowing down. Brother Thomas was the head plant superintendant in the early days of Moreau High School. He lived in community on the school’s third floor, and is most famously known as the Brother who planted the redwood trees all over the school’s campus. He is extremely proud of his trees, and enjoyed hearing me tell him how healthy and well loved those trees are to our community. Recently, Hayward Mayor Michael Sweeney sent a proclamation to Brother Thomas thanking him for planting those trees and contributing to the beautification of Hayward. That proclamation is framed and proudly displayed in Brother Thomas’ room. I could not thank him enough for all the contributions he made over the years to keeping our campus facilities and grounds in tip-top shape. They have lasted the test of time, and people still marvel at how well maintained this campus is for its age.

I also had the opportunity to see another Brother Thomas associated with Moreau, Brother Tom Frey, CSC. Many alumni will remember Brother Tom as their former physics and religion teacher here during the mid-1970s, before he moved over to Saint Francis High School in Mountain View. Brother Tom, like Brother Thomas, also lives at the Brother Vincent Pieau
Residence, but he is far from retired. His ministry these days is less about teaching science, and more about helping his fellow Brothers by driving them to medical appointments, caring for those who need a little extra TLC, and leading prayer and devotions. Brother Tom is seemingly never without a pocketful of medals—small, gold medal with Saint Joseph on one side, and Saint Andre Bessette on the other. Saint Joseph is the patron saint of the Brothers of Holy Cross, and Saint Andre is the first, and only, Holy Cross saint (though we pray that Blessed Father Moreau will be canonized soon!) As I write this, I reach into my own pocket and look at the medal Brother Tom gave me in Austin last summer. He gives these medals out to friends and strangers alike. Brother is a softspoken man with an incredibly deep devotion to Saint Joseph and the Blessed Mother. He easily and genuinely shares his faith and devotion with me, and all who he meets and gifts with a medal. Our conversations cover a wide range of topics—how people he remembered here at Moreau are doing, who is retired, what our current students are like and what they enjoy doing, and how we nurture their faith. Spending time with Brother Tom is like a mini spiritual retreat. You feel nourished and energized after being with him. I come away from our conversations better understanding why so many alumni I meet from the 1970s fondly recall Brother Tom and ask how he is doing. Believe me, he is doing well and is praying for you all! Although there haven’t been Brothers living and working at Moreau for many years, as a Holy Cross sponsored school we are still very much connected with them and work very hard to keep the tradition, legacy and mission of Holy Cross thriving for our current students. But for our alumni, I wanted to share my summer experiences with you as a way to keep you connected to two special men who devoted much time, energy and love to our school, and still want to know how their former students are doing in their lives and careers. Keeping a strong connection with our past strengthens our identity and gives deeper meaning to what makes us different and unique as a Holy Cross school. Brother Thomas Cousino and Brother Tom Frey can be reached at the Brother Vincent Pieau Residence, 921 Saint Edward Drive, Austin TX 78704.

We’re Back Four Pillars: Commitment Teamwork Leadership Hard Work
Chris Baca ‘12
For the first time since 2003, the Moreau football program is, once again, fielding three teams; Frosh, Junior Varsity and Varsity. After years of building a solid foundation, the Mariners have resurrected their “three floor house,” as Coach Andrew Cotter says, built on a solid foundation of four solid pillars of commitment, teamwork, leadership and hard work. Years ago, when Coach Cotter started as assistant coach of the Mariner JV Football team, he had a vision: return Moreau Football to the glory and pride of the 70’s, when Al Vermeil was Head Coach and the Mariners dominated the Catholic Athletic League. The “Vermeil years” are remembered by many as the best years of Moreau football. Talent, teamwork, dedication and pride coalesced to create an unstoppable team. At Coach Vermeil’s induction into the 2007 Hall of Fame, Coach Cotter listened to alumni players, Steve Klein ‘77 and Terry Eidson ‘76, share the impact of Moreau’s football program on their lives. “The way Steve and Terry talked about the values Coach Vermeil instilled, the work ethic he inspired, and the trust he placed in his team to fulfill their potential really inspired me. Steve and Terry both credited what they learned on the football field for helping them become successful adults. That’s what I want for my teams,” says Coach Cotter. A seed was planted. Moreau’s rich tradition of football should continue. But how? When Coach Cotter took the helm of the Mariners, he gathered his coaches together to define what football provides young men to help grow them into successful adults. What they developed is the Mariners four pillars, four traits that would transform a team from struggling to successful and transform boys to successful citizens of our global community. But the credit for the transformation falls to the players themselves. The team has embraced the four pillars as the foundation of their newly renovated three floor house. Chris Baca ‘12 says, “One of the things I love about football is the discipline it has taught me.” As a 16 year old starting senior tight-end, it is clear that those four pillars have become part of Chris’ character. Chris pushes himself on and off the field, striving to ensure his grades and performance lead him to a scholarship at a top University. He also coaches Moreau’s summer football camps and acts as a mentor to his younger teammates. Chris’ talent and leadership help move his team toward success. The program has more than 100 participants with nearly one third of the Freshman boys involved. “The tradition of Moreau football is coming back to life,” said President Terry Lee. “We’re seeing it in the skill and passion of our players, in the dedication and enthusiasm of our coaches and in the energy and support of the Moreau Community.” “This is our year,” said Cotter. “I can feel it. I’m excited for what these young men can accomplish together.” Support the Mariner teams! Go to www.moreaucatholic.org/football to see the schedule and check the team statistics.
