Letter from the President Dear Mariners, Another school year has ended, another wonderful group of young women and men have crossed the stage of the Paramount Theater, diploma in hand, hearts filled with hope and pride, and another Graduation issue of The Vector is in your hands for you to share in the graduates’ joys, hopes and dreams. We are very proud of the Class of 2011—a unique mixture of talent in the classroom, on the athletic fields and courts, on the stage, in ministry and service, and dedicated to life-long learning, devotion to family, and proud Mariners for life. We wish them every bit of success and excitement on their journey through college and in life. Many blessings upon the Class of 2011 from everyone at Moreau Catholic! I would also like to thank all those members of our community who supported the Teves Theatre Renovation project this year. The old wooden seats have been torn out, the room is currently being painted, and soon the new seats, carpet and window coverings will be installed. We will show off the new look in our next issue of The Vector, but the best way to see the newly refurbished theater is to attend a music, dance, drama or choir production this fall. I look forward to seeing you there! In addition to the theater, we have installed a new electronic sign in front of the school, easier to read and just in time to replace the old one, worn out from twelve years of sharing our news with the drivers on Mission Boulevard. Regarding Mission Boulevard, those of you in the area have surely seen the construction in front of Moreau. When it is completed next year, the southbound traffic light will move up to the Moreau driveway, eliminating the need for a u-turn for students and parents parking in the rear of the school. Up and down Mission, new sidewalks and trees, and the undergrounding of utility wires, will make the boulevard more attractive. Most importantly, a new state-of-theart traffic management system will significantly improve commute times to Moreau from both directions—particularly for those students coming from the north, who drive through downtown Hayward. The City of Hayward has been very attentive to the needs of the Moreau Community, and I would like to thank the City for working with the school on such a large project. Finally, read about the rededication of our student chapel to Saint André Bessette, including the placement of his holy relic into the chapel’s altar. This was an important event for our school community and the Congregation of Holy Cross, and we are delighted to have such an important place on campus dedicated to Saint André, the Miracle Man of Montreal. Thank you for all you do for Moreau Catholic, and I wish you all a pleasant summer and hope to see you on campus this fall! Cheers,
Terry Lee President

Moreau Athletics—The Year in Review Progress is forward movement and development in the direction of a future destination. In the sports world, there is no black and white dichotomy to measure progress. Instead, progress in sports is very grey. An athlete’s effort and triumph over adversity hold as much value as any numerical statistic.
Senior members of the Varsity Basketball Team Top Row; Left to Right: Andy Mitchell, Justindeep Aulakh, Coach Frank Knight III, Kacey Holt, Joaquin Rabelo Bottom Row; Left to Right: Lawrence Salas, Brean Aquino, Richard L’Heureux ‘12, Pitcher Mariner Baseball Team League Champions, 2011
For Moreau Catholic Mariners success varied from sport to sport in 20102011, but the overall progress made was both encouraging and a dramatic step in the route of winning. This past year in sports was a landmark of improvement for several teams, not only in win percentage, but also in the athletes’ attitudes. The proverbial “Most Improved Team” award goes to the baseball team after their remarkably refined season. With consistently strong outings from southpaw pitcher Richard L’Heureux ‘12, the baseball team improved upon their eighth place finish in 2010 to league champions in 2011 qualifying them for NCS; the farthest jump in record any Mariner team has accomplished in over ten years. The girls softball team continued to dominate in league competing in NCS for the twelfth year in a row!
Pitcher Shelby Long ‘11 will be a scholar athlete at Claremont-McKenna this fall. 6
The Vector | Summer ‘11
Also seeing a change in culture was the boys basketball team. Fr a n k K n i g h t I I I took the helm as Varsity Head Coach in 2011 and sought drastically to build a better program at Moreau. The Mariners’ fast-break offensive approach with Andy Mitchell ‘11, newcomer Kacey Holt ‘11, and solid bench play proved to be a foundation of success. Knight’s Mariners improved four places in league, going from eighth to fourth, but have the eye at the top for next year.
CONNECT Keeping a tradition of success can be as difficult as obtaining it. With a smooth swing and a soft putting stroke, Carlos Briones ‘12 developed all the tools necessary to remain league champion of boys golf for the third year in a row. And, though an individual sport by nature, it took a team effort from boys golf to bring home a banner to Moreau by repeating as league champions and winning the North Coast Section Division II title. Jana Lee ‘12 of the girls tennis team has also become a stranger to losing, repeating as league singles champion and will return next year. Diver Mallory Lee ‘11 took the opportunity to end her high school career as back-to-back league champion and will start college next year as a scholar athlete of Wagner College in New York. With a history of winning, the girls basketball team boasted a near perfect record of 14-2 during the regular season and were able to continue their journey into the quarter-finals of the NCS Division III playoffs. Also keeping an imposing presence amidst the competition were cross country standouts Anika Adeni ‘11, Yvett Navarro ‘12, and Michael Temple ‘11. While the boys cross country team finished sixth at the Meet of Champions, the girls team placed third at the meet and qualified for State competition in Fresno. This was Adeni’s fourth consecutive appearance at state competition and she will continue running as a scholar athlete at Boston University next fall. Members of the coaching staff deserve an enormous amount of credit for crafting the building blocks of a credible program. This year four coaches earned the Hayward Area Athletic League Coach of the Year honors. Those coaches were Lyndsey Mietz ‘05 of girls volleyball, Rose Borja of girls tennis, Jack Kennedy of girls basketball, and Frank Knight III of boys basketball. Rally squad coaches, Jasmine Ogle ‘90 and Julie Maroun, watched their varsity song squad gain national attention as song was awarded first place at the 2011 Spirit Nationals, hosted by the United Spirit Association. And even though they have not met their goal yet, the football team looks to continue its vast improvement seen last season. Coach Andrew Cotter’s Mariners were held slightly out of reach of an NCS playoff berth last season (after going 6-3-1), but the season ahead looks promising as the frosh/soph team went 9-1 last season under Logan Irons’ tutelage. Cotter looks to expand the football program to include a freshman-only team next year in hopes that a new team will provide more football experience for incoming players. With such improvement made this past year, and with goals to remain at the top, the progress Moreau Catholic athletics has made this year is indicative of an exciting future ahead.

You will be missed Two beloved faculty members, Don
Morneau and Kathy Kyle, retired this
year after 35 and 30 years of service, respectively. Their lasting impact on the Moreau community is indelible, as they touched the lives of thousands of students, parents, faculty and staff over the years.
Then there was the time Don... Ray Breves and Dave Baptist had a hilarious list of reminiscences—embellished to maximum effect with demos and props. Sieve? What’s up with the sieve?
Yolanda Moran commemorated her long friendship with Kathy. She caught up on some news with Hon. Paul Delucchi ‘87 at the Faculty and Staff BBQ.

Kathy Kyle beamed one of her famous smiles in this picture with retired teacher, Janita Gee. She must have been thinking about all the trips she’s going to take with her husband.
Don Morneau
Kathy Kyle
Moreau first said “Aloha” to Don Morneau in 1975 when the young teacher joined the faculty. The Hawaii native soon became an adored teacher, colleague and friend with his easygoing style, strong character and warm smile. Don taught religion, social studies and physical education and is known to many as their favorite teacher at Moreau.
Science teacher Kathy Kyle began teaching at Moreau in 1973. She left Moreau after the first year and during a seven-year hiatus she married her husband, Bob, and had two daughters, Sheryl (Kyle) Kane ‘94 and Cindy Kyle ‘97. Returning to the classroom at Moreau in 1981, Kathy taught chemistry and biology.
Tricia (Reyes) Munoz ‘92 said, “Mr. Morneau was my favorite at Moreau. Future Mariners will surely be missing out. Congratulations [on your retirement]!” Don coached several sports at Moreau (Baseball, Football and Golf) and served as Athletic Director for the school. In addition, Don moderated several clubs on campus including the Letterman Club, Pep Club, Polynesian Club, Block Club and Moreau Intra-Murals. “Coach has been, and continues to be, a true mentor and friend,” said teacher Dave Baptist ‘85. “I will miss our occasional walks around campus at lunch, seeing the faces of students light up as they say ‘hi’ or ‘aloha’ to him. It’s obvious that he has impacted these young men and women in a very real and positive way, and their smiles are a simple and powerful expression of thanks.” Don is legendary on Moreau’s campus for many things including his infamous shorts and “slippers” (otherwise known as flip flops), that undoubtedly showed up within 5 minutes of the closing bell. To culminate his years of service, impact on students and commitment to education, Don was recognized by the Hayward Education Foundation with the Hayward Hero Award in March 2011. In addition, the new baseball scoreboard will be dedicated to Don Morneau, with a plaque to memorialize all of his accomplishments at Moreau. Mahalo Don!
A caring and dedicated teacher, Kathy has spent countless hours helping students afterschool and encouraging them to always do their best. Danielle Vargas ‘14 said, “Mrs. Kyle is a wonderful teacher who always puts her students’ learning first.” Kathy served as Science Department Chair from 1990-93, 19982008 and 2010-2011. She also served on several committees including the Health and Wellness Committee, Disciplinary Board, Holy Cross Associates, Earthquake Preparedness Committee, Mission Effectiveness Committee (later renamed the Mission Integration Committee), and the Technology Committee. Colleague and friend Yolanda Moran gave a touching tribute to Kathy at the faculty/staff end of the year party where she said, “The void that you are leaving in the heart of Moreau Catholic High School can never be refilled. Take care and remember, you will be missed!” Kathy plans to spend retirement traveling with her husband and spending more time with her grandsons, Hunter and Logan. “Don and Kathy, thank you for your dedication to transforming the hearts and minds of thousands of Moreau students,” said President Terry Lee. “Congratulations on your retirement. May God bless this next chapter in your lives.”

Sacred Relic Placed in Chapel Altar Last November on All Saints’ Day, Holy Cross Brothers Michael Winslow, CSC and Nick Perez, CSC visited Moreau Catholic and presented the school, on behalf of the Brothers of Holy Cross, a first-class relic of Saint André Bessette. Coincidentally, the school had recently received a handmade altar that was in need of a relic. These two extraordinary gifts sparked the idea to rename the student chapel on the 2nd floor in honor of the first saint of the Congregation of Holy Cross, André Bessette, the Miracle Man of Montreal. The energetic and creative Moreau maintenance crew, led by Kookie Nasario and Tom Alcott, started working with Faith and Service Coordinator Peter Shelley, Campus Ministry Director Ann Khristine Tabora, and Chaplain Rev. Tito Bonoan to plan the chapel’s rededication. The wood panel walls and hardwood floor of the altar area were polished to a shine, a new statue of Saint André was installed along with a kneeler to form a small shrine, and the receptacle for the relic was constructed on top of the new altar. Once the interior changes were made, new signs were hung above both doors announcing Saint André Chapel to all who walked by. The formal rededication took place on May 2 during the liturgy prior to the Board of Trustees’ annual Corporation meeting. Brother Donald Blauvelt, CSC, Provincial Superior of the Brothers of Holy Cross, South-West Province, placed the holy relic into the altar and sealed it with an inscribed tile. In addition to the members of the Moreau Board of Trustees, President Terry Lee, Principal Lauren Lek ‘97, Mr. Shelley, Ms. Tabora, Father Tito, and student members of the 2011 Campus Ministry Team, other special guests in attendance included Brother William Nick, CSC of the MCHS Board of Trustees, and Brothers Joel Giallanza, CSC, Richard Daley, CSC, William Zaydak, CSC and Harold Ehlinger, CSC. At the end of the Mass, all attendees laid hands on the chapel walls as the final prayer officially renamed the chapel for Saint André Bessette.
Saint André Chapel
open for students, faculty and staff during school hours. Weekly liturgy is celebrated each Wednesday during the school year at 7:15 AM, led by school chaplain Father Tito Bonoan and accompanied by student campus ministers. For monthly schoolwide liturgies the altar is moved to the Main Gym, needed to accommodate the entire student body, faculty/ staff and visitors. If you would like to attend Mass at Moreau Catholic, please contact Father Tito Bonoan at 510.881.4336

Bishop Cordileone
Celebrates Closing of School Mass The Most Reverend Salvatore Cordileone, Bishop of the Diocese of Oakland, made his second annual visit to the Moreau Catholic campus on May 19 to celebrate the Closing of School Mass, visit with classes, and lunch with teachers. Joining Bishop was Father Ken Sales, former parochial vicar at Saint Clement Church, and Moreau’s Chaplain, Father Tito Bonoan. Bishop Cordileone spoke to students about being true to their faith in the midst of all the noise that surrounds us in the world. His homily captivated and informed students, many learning of respect for the San Francisco Giants but his loyalty for his hometown San Diego Padres. Throughout his reflections, students were engaged and inspired by the Bishop’s message. Many waited for him afterwards to shake his hand and engage in more informal conversation. “It is always nice to have the Bishop come visit our school; it affirms our work as Catholic educators,” said Faith and Service coordinator Peter Shelley. Following Mass, Bishop attended a lunch with teachers and staff, hosted by President Terry Lee and Principal Lauren Lek ‘97. This informal lunch was the perfect venue for Bishop to get to know many of our teachers, learn about projects and lessons happening in their classes, and hear a little bit of bragging about our recent successes in athletics and in the arts. Mr. Shelley and Assistant Principal Michael Aquino ‘91 gave the Bishop a grand tour of Moreau after lunch, visiting several classes where the Bishop had more opportunities to talk with students and teachers. Bishop Cordileone has also attended Moreau’s annual Parish Leadership Dinner in 2009 and 2010, and we look forward to his next visit in the fall. The entire Moreau Catholic community thanks the Bishop for his support of Moreau and of Catholic education in
Board of Trustees member, and former board chair, David Capurro ‘77 was awarded the Cross & Anchors Award at this year’s graduation ceremony. The board of trustees established the Cross & Anchors Award in 2002 to recognize the outstanding achievement of a graduating senior who best represents the educational values and mission of the Congregation of Holy Cross and Moreau Catholic High School. A second version of the Cross & Anchors Award, awarded periodically to someone noted for their leadership and commitment to the school’s Holy Cross mission, was created to honor the outstanding achievement of a person who is not a current student, but is, or has been associated with the school community in a variety of ways. Capurro is a storied name in the history of Moreau Catholic High School. Dave is one of 14 members of the Capurro family to graduate from Moreau. You can feel the vividness and joy of his memories when you talk to him about his high school days and the great impact his education made on his life. Dave went on to earn bachelors and masters degrees at Cal State Hayward, and spent most of his career as a portfolio manager and vice president for Franklin Templeton. Upon his retirement in 1999, he started volunteering his time at Moreau. He chaired the Institutional Advancement committee, helping to grow the school’s development program, and shared his invaluable insights in other areas including finance and investments. Dave was appointed to the Board of Trustees in 2000, and served as the chair of the board from 2005 to 2008. While Dave just stepped off the board, he will remain involved at Moreau in a number of ways. Dave has given countless hours of his time to Moreau; he has supported the school financially; and he has shared his expertise with school leaders that led to good, sound decisions about school investments, policies, and the school’s mission. There is no way to repay, or adequately thank Dave, for making such a monumental difference through his leadership, support, and steadfast enthusiasm for all things Mariner.

Raimondi Volunteer Recognition Brunch Honors Peter Peabody and Cheryl (Baglietto) Meares ‘75 On Sunday, May 1, 2011, two special members of the Moreau Community were honored for their volunteer service to the school. Mr. Peter Peabody received the John A. Raimondi Volunteer Award and Ms. Cheryl (Baglietto) Meares ‘75 received the Alumni Recognition Award for Service.
Peter’s teaching career was short lived. In his second year at Moreau, Peter was asked to serve as Activities Director. Peter started the Campus Ministry program on campus, growing it to large numbers and nurtured a rapidly growing Student Activities program until 1995 when he decided to return to the classroom. Peter also served as a bus driver for 10 years and drove most of the sports and extensive marching band activities on evenings and weekends.
The John A. Raimondi Volunteer Award is presented annually to someone who exhibits the character and dedication of the award’s namesake. John Raimondi was a Moreau parent who volunteered his time, talent and treasure from 1971 until his untimely death in 1986 at age 47. In addition to being a benefactor of the school, John never ceased to volunteer his time for any school group or event needing his help. He did this for many years when his children were enrolled in the school and continued to do so as an alumni parent. Principal Lauren Lek ‘97 and President Terry Lee present
Peter is married to Peggy Reilly ‘78 and has three children, Corinda ‘97, Aaron ‘05 and Allison ‘08. Peter’s wife and kids would be seen at the myriad of events Peter attended, on bus trips with the sports teams and at student council meetings. For Peter, life at Moreau is a family affair.
Peter was the administrative representative to the Band Parents Club and traveled with the band to Japan, Disneyland and Hawaii. He received the first “Peter Peabody” award for service to the Band Program, an award that continues today.
the Raimondi Volunteer Award to Peter Peabody
There are a handful of Moreau faculty and staff whose commitment to the school goes far above and beyond what is outlined in their employment contract, and Peter Peabody is one of them. From the moment he joined the faculty in 1976 to today, Peter has given 110% of himself to living out Moreau’s Holy Cross charisms and leaving a lasting impact on thousands of students along the way. Peter was hired in 1976 as a counselor and theology teacher. Peter has always been interested in sports and thus volunteered to run the clock at football and basketball games as he had done at St. Mary’s High in Berkeley, his first teaching assignment. 12
The Vector | Summer ‘11
Peter has been an announcer and scorekeeper for football, baseball, softball and volleyball games. His official title is “The Voice of Mariner Athletics.” He not only is the announcer, but programs and plays the music for baseball and football. Peter attends many sporting events, fine arts performances and many class reunions. He enjoys the interaction with parents, athletes and alumni and at last check had more than 1,500 friends on facebook, many of whom are his former students.

Cheryl (Baglietto) Meares ‘75
Eloquently representing what Peter has brought to the Moreau Community over the past 35 years, he said, “It is only with the gift of time and love that we can expect to see the community grow to its true potential and be a loving example of the Holy Cross Tradition alive in our community.” Cheryl (Baglietto) Meares ‘75 received the Alumni Recognition Award for Service at the May brunch celebration. Cheryl first stepped foot on Moreau’s campus in 1972 and has left her mark in more ways than one. Cheryl has a true passion for service to others and the Moreau community is very lucky to have her continued support. A graduate from the class of 1975, Cheryl is one of those rare individuals who feel that there is no task too big to accomplish. Whether it is organizing the Crab Feed auction, cooking a meal for the Bernie and the Boys NCAA championship basketball event, or transforming Moreau’s third floor for the Murder, Mystery and Mayhem dinner party for 20, she does it with skill, style and a reckless abandon regarding any limitations. Cheryl is very active with Moreau’s football program, working in the snack bar, helping out at games and organizing the team’s annual BBQ. She can be seen regularly at Moreau athletic events, musicals, talent shows, assemblies and masses. She is in perpetual motion when it comes to serving the school and it is in her nature to give. Cheryl’s son Nick graduated this year and will play football at Pacific University in Oregon in the fall.
Congratulations Peter and Cheryl, and thank you for all you do for Moreau Catholic!

Teves Teves Theatre Renovation
Theatre Renovation
Under the direction of Angela Demmel, the dance program offered the first Honors classes in the state. Moreau alumnae Claire Calalo ‘03, Elizabeth Morales ‘03 and Jessica de Leon ‘05 have continued dance as performers and educators.
The campaign to renovate Teves Theatre launched in the fall of 2010 beginning with a recordbreaking Student Fundraiser that raised more than $90,000! Moreau parents, alumni, faculty, staff and community members supported the project by sponsoring a seat, and in turn will receive a personalized nameplate on one of the new seats.

A celebration
of the arts at Moreau and the culminating fundraising event for the Teves Theatre Renovation campaign was held in April. More than 300 guests enjoyed a showcase of Mariner talent, past and present, when all four genres (Band, Choir, Dance and Theatre) performed together for the first time in Moreau history. In addition, Moreau’s AP art students showcased their work during a pre-event reception in the Ivaldi Student Center. Special thanks to the nearly 150 students who performed that evening and our dedicated Visual and Performing Arts faculty and Institutional Advancement department for all of their hard work. Performances by alumni who participated in the arts as students and continued to pursue careers in the arts were a highlight of the evening. Pianist Aileen Chanco ‘85 impressed the audience with her amazing talent. Classmate and singer/songwriter Jamie Clark ‘85 performed three songs and gave tribute to the influence Moreau has had on his career. Dancers Claire Calalo ‘03, Jessica de Leon ‘05 and Elizabeth Morales ‘03 performed a piece called As They Were, choreographed by dance teacher Angela Demmel. Jessica Afonso ‘10 gave a beautiful performance of Someone Like You from the musical Jekyll and Hyde, accompanied by Jesse Micek ‘98. Playing an original piece, Peter Hook Movement 2, composed by Richard Philbin ‘05, was the Richard Philbin Combo of Richard, Jesse Micek ‘98 and Ian Quirk ‘05. In addition, Marc Puppo ‘84 and his band, Mission Peak, entertained the guests with their classic rock and blues performance during the pre-event reception.
Julliard-trained Aileen Chanco ‘85 wowed the audience with her keyboard virtuosity.
The event was emceed by Moreau Catholic parent and radio personality Sylvia Chacon. Audio Visual Support was provided by Audio Visual Techniques and catering was provided by Star Catering. Special thanks to Claire Calalo who stepped in as Stage Manager the day of the show! The theatre renovation is underway and is slated to be complete before the start of the school year in August. All are welcome to join us for a concert, play or performance next year to enjoy the comfort of the new seats and the theatres new look! Or, if you are interested in scheduling a tour, please contact us. Seat sponsorships are still available. Leaders in Catholic Education Kathleen Radecke ‘85 and Rick Maya ‘90
Preparing God’s children for college, for life and for life-everlasting is a big responsibility. It takes vision, commitment, enthusiasm, compassion, and most importantly, faith. This summer two Moreau graduates will move into new leadership roles in Catholic education. Rick Maya ‘90 was appointed the Director of Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Sacramento and Kathleen Radecke ‘85 was appointed Superintendent of Schools with the Diocese of Monterey. Their journey was very different, however the challenges they will face and their vision for the future of Catholic schools is very similar. Kathleen Radecke ‘85 Superintendent of Catholic Schools, Diocese of Monterey Kathleen has devoted her career to Catholic education. “My greatest passion is nurturing God’s children,” Kathleen said. “I couldn’t ask for a more rewarding career and consider it to be a true ministry.” After graduating in 1985, Kathleen coached swimming at Moreau while earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech Communication and a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from Cal State Hayward. From 1993 - 2002, she taught second and third grade at Holy Spirit School in Fremont, St. Brigid School in San Francisco and St. Philip Neri School in Alameda. In 2000, Kathleen earned a Master’s Degree in Catholic School Administration from the University of San Francisco. 18

She served as Principal at St. Perpetua School in Lafayette from 2002-2007. In 2007, Kathleen joined the Diocese of Oakland as Assistant Superintendent with the Department of Catholic Schools. “The Diocese of Oakland has been my home and my family for my entire life,” said Kathleen. “I’m sad to leave such wonderful people and at the same time, so excited about this new opportunity and a new set of challenges.” As Superintendent of Catholic Schools with the Diocese of Monterey, Kathleen will oversee 18 schools including 12 elementary schools, five high schools and one parish preschool. “We have a tremendous responsibility to prepare our children for heaven, while providing academic excellence and giving them the tools they need to be successful in the 21st century,” said Kathleen. “We are charged with finding the right balance between the integration of faith and culture into the total curriculum of the school while supporting the needs of all students and their families.” “I hope to model many of my Moreau experiences in my work in Monterey,” said Kathleen. “Moreau is a hopeful and faith-filled community. As a student, I always felt supported and connected to my faith. I knew that my teachers, coaches and administrators wanted to help me reach my full potential. That’s the true mission of Catholic education! Rick Maya ‘90 Director of Catholic Schools, Diocese of Sacramento After graduating from Moreau, Rick earned a bachelor’s degree from Cal State Hayward in Human Resource Management. During his third year of college, he took a job as a bank teller and soon became a rising star in the financial industry. By the age of 23, he was promoted to Branch Manager. A few years later, he moved to Bank of America for a District Manager position and at 27, Rick was promoted to Senior Vice President, in charge of 50 Bank of America branches across Northern California. By 2003, Rick had direct oversight of community relations in California, which included marketing, public relations, government relations and corporate philanthropy. “I moved up very quickly in banking. However, my work in corporate philanthropy opened my eyes to the needs in the non-profit sector,” said Rick. “I became interested in education and found the Charter school system intriguing.” In 2008, Rick became superintendant of the St. Hope Schools in Sacramento, which included a high school serving more than 1,000 students, a K-8 elementary school and a private preschool. In 2010, Rick accepted a position with the Diocese of Sacramento as Executive Director, focusing primarily on at-risk schools in the diocese. In his new role as Director of Catholic Schools, Rick will oversee 46 elementary, secondary, parish and diocesan schools within the Diocese of Sacramento. “It is important for us to stay competitive in today’s educational market,” said Rick. “That starts with being
able to attract and keep the best teachers and administrators in our schools.” “We have the responsibility, and privilege, to teach the Gospel values to our children,” Rick said. “It’s not just a subject during the school day, these lessons in ethics and values are in everything we do, every single day. It’s a way of life for our students, faculty and staff.”
“My experiences at Moreau shaped me in many ways, but most importantly from an ethical perspective. I learned to have passion and compassion for the world,” Rick reflected. “I will definitely use these experiences in my work in education in the Sacramento Diocese.”

Moreau Catholic has a competitive Mock Trial program that we would like to see strengthened. Student teams study a hypothetical case, conduct legal research and receive individual coaching in trial preparation, courtroom protocol, courtroom procedure, analytical skills, and communication skills. Preparation begins in the fall and culminates in grueling elimination-rounds over four weeks of competition in February. The winning team represents Alameda County at the state competition in March. In order to be competitive, the Moreau team needs attorney coaches! If you are interested in supporting the program by serving as a coach, or in any capacity, please contact Mr. Phil Wilder at pwilder@moreaucatholic.org.
