A Letter from the President Dear Mariners,

In thanksgiving for all you do for Moreau Catholic High School, I greet you with the Fall 2016 issue of The Vector, which includes our annual report for 2015-16. These pages are filled with stories sharing all that is new on campus, mixed with some profiles about alumni, staff, students, and volunteers, and many expressions of gratitude for the generosity of our donors over the last year. We could not be successful without your love and support! As I previewed in the last issue, we spent the summer months transforming several of our classrooms into 21st century learning spaces that support new programs, enhanced curricula, and STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) education. Our old maintenance shop, behind the Ivaldi Student Center, has transformed into our new Design Studio, pictured on the cover. Two science classrooms were completely gutted and redesigned to support biotechnology and our new, 3-D, holographic learning technology, zSpace. And three classrooms in A-hall were renovated to support the new Teach to One math program and interdisciplinary English/Social Studies classes. The A-hall classrooms feature many different types of furniture and writable surfaces that promote adaptability and flexibility in student learning. The Moreau Catholic Board of Trustees, administration, faculty and staff are committed to transforming and improving our student learning spaces to further improve and enhance our college-preparatory curriculum and prepare the next generation of Mariners for top-tier universities, cutting-edge jobs, and a life of service in the Holy Cross tradition. We send blessings to you and your family during this autumn season. I hope to see many alumni and Mariner families at Homecoming on November 4th. Funders Bring Mock Trial Dreams to Reality

Last March, when the Mock Trial team competed at the State Championship in Sacramento, there were many incredible experiences and memories that had lasting impressions on the program. One of these moments was a conversation with Caroline Breeding, parent of Zachary Task ‘16. She asked what our dreams for the Mock Trial program were, and what took place after that conversation is still hard to believe. Zac’s parents, Caroline Breeding and Dr. Sheri Task, in an incredible act of generosity, offered to help fund the dreams for the Mock Trial team as well as begin the Fund for Academic Team Excellence, and endowment fund that will support academic team competitions in perpetuity. The first dream was realized even before Zac graduated last May by the creation and installation of a beautiful display case to showcase the awards and honors that have been bestowed upon the school’s Academic Competition teams. Here students and visitors can see the academic honors that can inspire others to reach for their dreams.

Mariners who went into the field of law, have been invited to watch the current Mock Trial team perform their courtroom roles. Law Day will also recognize alumni and alumni parents for their lifetime of achievements in the field of law, individuals who have been friends of Mock Trial through their support and generosity, and individuals who have led the team in teaching and coaching to reach for the highest standards of excellence. This year we are very excited and honored to present the Lifetime Achievement Award to the Honorable Shawna M. Schwarz ‘81, Judge for the Superior Court of Santa Clara County; the Honorable Paul Delucchi ‘87, Judge for the Superior Court of Alameda County; and posthumously to the late Honorable Alfred Delucchi, who served as a Judge for the Superior Court of Alameda County. The Amicus Curiae (Friends) of Mock Trial Award will be presented to Caroline Breeding and Dr. Sheri Task, and the Award for Excellence in Teaching and Coaching is being presented to the founder of the team, Mr. Bob Parker. We look forward to this most special day and hope you can join us.

The next dream on the list is the creation of a Law Day event, which had its origins a few years back when retired Social Studies teacher and former Mock Trial Coach Petar Zegura saw a successful Law Day event at another school. What could be better than an event devoted to bringing alumni in the field of law together with our current Mock Trial students? So, on October 22, we will be hosting the Inaugural Alumni Law Day where all Mariners who have been part of Mock Trial since Social Studies teacher Bob Parker started the program 13 years ago, and all the

Innovative Learning ROBOTICS In the Design Studio, the Moreaubots (Moreau’s robotics team and class) are utilizing the new space and the accompanying tools to build, program, and test their new robots. The class is using the VEX Robotics challenge “Swept Away” as the foundation for this semester’s work. The game is a headto-head robotics competition designed and scaled to be run in a classroom environment by a single teacher. 29 students were split into teams and built a total of 12 robots, each of which has

If all of the balls in play end up on one side of the field, the match immediately ends – the team with all of the balls on their side of the wall has then been “Swept Away.” The new classroom is particularly conducive to the maker-spirit. It is a real design and engineering space with tools on the wall, tables that can be rearranged as needed, and creates a focused environment for creativity and construction- an experience the students cannot get anywhere else. The class is flourishing in the Design Studio, and student enthusiasm is increasing with every keystroke, tightened bolt, and carefully crafted gear!

TEACH TO ONE

its own dedicated laptop. With great enthusiasm, the students spent a number of days building the robots and are now trouble-shooting the remote programming and robot commands. “Swept Away” provides a challenge for designers of all experience levels to compete against each other. “Matches” are played on an eight feet by eight feet square field with a dividing wall down the center. One robot is placed on each side of the field with twelve four inches. foam soccer balls and six foam footballs. The object of the game is simple: get as many balls onto your opponent’s side of the field as possible during a two-minute match.

Teach to One has officially started at Moreau Catholic, and the cohort of 90 students enrolled in the first personalized high school math course in the nation are off and running! Throughout the first two months of Teach to One, the students have experienced a math course unlike any other class they have seen: personalized instruction, dynamic grouping and collaboration, immediate and detailed feedback, and instruction specifically tailored to their learning style. This transformational program has led to some pretty stunning initial results, including an average of 91% on the students’ first round of unit assessments. Student enthusiasm for the program is high, and we recently asked some of our students what they thought of the program. Personalization Because TTO has three teachers (Math Advisors) and three additional educators

(Teacher Residents), we have the opportunity to offer live investigations of new topics in groups often smaller than twelve students. Dynamic grouping and a collaborative spirit among the teachers in the program allow for a personalized approach and a deeper connection with students. Said one student, “We have small classes, so I am able to ask questions and not be shy… there are always teachers there to help me. Every day there is a new thing to do. I can focus on my work because the teachers are always around to keep me on task.” Teachers guide students through a variety of learning modalities, including live investigation, small group collaboration, peer-to-peer tutoring, application tasks, and a variety of computer-led modalities, all of which help to teach students exactly the type of content for which they are ready in a manner that best suits them. One student put it very eloquently when she said, “I find being able to learn concepts in different ways is the most helpful part of the program, because if I don’t get the concept one way I can always get it another way the next time.” Application Another important aspect of TTO is that instruction doesn’t take place in a vacuum. Students are constantly applying what they learn to a variety of real-world applications. These most often happen in Application Tasks seven-day projects that encourage students to take on relevant topics using the math skills they are learning each day. For example, while in task application mode, students who are learning how to use graphs to represent a linear function are applying that skill to figure out the most efficient way to save money for a large investment. Other students use that same skill to figure out the best way to pitch a music company on an idea for revenue-sharing related to

Nothing in TTO is learned in isolation. Through our first two months of TTO, teachers and students are enthused and energized by the progress. It has been an exciting start to the year with many great moments, and we know there will be many more for this engaging, innovative, and personalized program.

ZSPACE zSpace is an interactive hardware and software platform that allows users to visualize, create and experience in ways not possible in a traditional computer environment. zSpace’s virtual reality environment gives depth to the digital learning experience by improving the ways things are studied, explored, and designed.

In the brand new zSpace lab, we now have 24 zSpace computers that have been installed for use and they are being utilized in every science class at Moreau Catholic. Teachers in each class are discovering what the capabilities of the technology, and are incorporating it into their daily lessons. The zSpace programs allow students to manipulate, dissect, or experiment in ways that they wouldn’t easily be able to do in a traditional classroom. This virtual experience gives students access to views of the world that would be impractical or impossible to see otherwise. With every science class having the opportunity to test out and utilize the technology, the ways that they have chosen to vary from class to class: Physics classes are performing gravity investigations and researching the physics of motion; AP Biology has been looking at 3D molecular models of

Macromolecules; Honors Biology has been investigating the plant cell and organelles; AP Environmental Science has been looking at photosynthesis and respiration; Anatomy has been investigating the Integumentary and Skeletal system; Kinesiology has studied fractures; Chemistry has been manipulating molecules and learning about the Periodic Table. The list of examples goes on and on, but as zSpace continues to add content and curriculum on a regular basis, there will be new and exciting uses that haven’t been thought of yet. With so many exciting features and programs within zSpace, teachers will be able to customize the experience to meet each class’ specific learning objectives. “It’s very important for schools to have a faculty engaged with technology.”

Mary McInerney She says she learned from that experience to be relentless about teamwork and about leveraging relationships in and out of school. “It was hard work that required quick thinking with quick decisions for an end goal,” says McInerny. She has brought the lessons she learned in Texas with her to her new position here at Moreau Catholic.

Having state-of-the-art technology is one accomplishment, but utilizing it to its full potential to benefit the learning experience requires another leap. Education Technology Specialist Mary McInerney joined the staff at Moreau Catholic this year to serve as a liaison and technological lifeline for faculty and staff. “Technology changes the game of education,” says McInerney. “It’s very important for schools to have a faculty engaged with technology. We’re moving from just IT and making sure the computers and programs are running correctly to leveraging platforms for the teachers’ benefit and supporting them with that implementation,” she adds.

McInerney wants every teacher to view technology as a way to expand their teaching, and to use resources to really increase the exploration in the classroom. She says she wants to find ways to integrate technology into the curriculum and support teachers in using technology in their classrooms. “This school is passionate about technology, “she says, and adds that she will work to utilize educational apps and resources such as Khan Academy, Quizlet, NBC Learn, Lockdown Browser and Drop Out Detective to their full potential. She is ready “to up our game in this technology world.”

McInerney, a Bay Area native and resident of Oakland, attended St. Theresa School in Oakland and St. Ignatius High School in San Francisco before pursuing her degree in health science from Purdue University in Indiana. Combining her passion for teaching with technology, she committed to teaching physics through Teach for America at a high school in West Dallas, Texas while completing the Master STEM Teacher Program at Sothern Methodist University. Although West Dallas was only 15 minutes away from Dallas’ exclusive Highland Park, the communities were miles apart both socioeconomically and environmentally.

Karthik Kalyanaraman ‘17 “When I came into high school, I was super introverted,” says Karthik Kalyanaraman. “Going to a school of 60 people and then coming here was a bit of a kick to the face. In all of freshman year, I didn’t make many friends. Quite honestly, at some points I wanted to transfer out. But then sophomore year, I ended up opening up a bit more. Not only did I find friends, but I also found all of the opportunities at Moreau Catholic.” Student government has allowed him to really connect with his class and help out his school. A junior senator and now the senior class vice president, Kalayanaraman has co-led the spirit week skit and led the maker lab competition. He has put a lot of time and energy into the DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) club in his role as club president. “That club is my baby,” Kalyanaraman says. DECA is a business club that prepares members for competitions which revolve around marketing, finance, hospitality and tourism, and business. On top of that, he is president of a non-profit called Youth of the Future which gives introductory robotics classes to Hayward elementary kids who have not had STEM exposure. Outside of school, his main hobby is cars. He has a BMW z4 that is 10 years old, which takes up a lot of his time as he fixes it. Even with all of his co-curriculars, he somehow has managed to take 10 different AP classes, 5 of them in senior year. The program at Moreau Catholic that he says has influenced him the most is the English department.

are in front of him. He is admirably independent, or self-directed. I think that a lot of that work ethic comes from the fact that he is very intrinsically motivated. He sets his goal, he works to his goal,” Prisk says of Kalyanaraman.

“Everything with the English department here at Moreau Catholic, especially Mr. Prisk, has prepared me to write in a way I never thought I would be able to, which made my college essays so much better,” Kalyanaraman says. “Shout that man out, I love him,” he says of Mr. Prisk, his eleventh grade honors English teacher.

Through his dedication to his academics, Kalyanaraman is now a National Merit Semifinalist after earning a perfect score on the PSAT. He is applying to be a finalist next month. While the journey from being an introverted freshman to an active and accomplished senior may not have been an easy one, Kalyanaraman has certainly proved that through hard work and dedication anything is possible. Everyone here at Moreau Catholic will be keeping a close eye on him as he continues to grow and moves on towards achieving his goal of becoming an electrical engineer. If the past four years have taught us anything about Karthik Kalyanaraman it is that he won’t let anything get in the way of making that dream come true.

“My focus, or process, with [my students] is to try to find ways to make the invisible transparent, to demystify the mysterious. A lot of students process writing like it’s run by a lot of hidden rules, and they are not sure when they are doing a good job. My goal is to try to replace the mystery with a series of steps that could reliably produce something that you’d be happy with,” Mr. Prisk says. “What I always noticed about [Karthik] is that he is appropriately confident. He doesn’t seem to get easily daunted by the tasks that

Jullen “Booda” Ison ‘17 The life of an athlete is a difficult one; you need a strong will and work ethic if you really want to succeed. Senior Jullen “Booda” Ison has been working towards his goal of playing college football since he was 7 years old. Ten years later, he finally is on the verge of making that dream a reality. After Ison’s stellar junior year performance on the field where he rushed for 3,004 yards, scored 43 touchdowns, and led Moreau Catholic to an 11-2 record, he has had to find extra time in his schedule to deal with the demands of being recruited. “You have to go to a lot of camps and there are a lot of late night phone calls, texts, and emails. It’s quite interesting… sometimes you either enjoy it or it can be very stressful. You just have to enjoy it,” says Ison. Balancing school, practice, camps, recruiting, and a social life may sound stressful to most people, but Ison is able to somehow make it all work. “I have a calendar in my room where I write down the times for everything and due dates, and I work around that. At times it can be difficult,” said Ison. “I’m not able to hang out as much with friends because of my tight schedule, and on weekends I’m either working out or at practice. During the week I wake up at 6:25 a.m. and get dressed for school, leave the house at 7:30 a.m., then go through the school day. I get out of school at 2:40 p.m. and have practice from 3:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.. I get home around 7:00 p.m. and take a shower and start my homework. I try and go to sleep around 11:00 p.m. and do the same thing the next day.” Having a strong support system has helped Ison become the man that he is today and he credits his mother, father, and his family for helping to keep him grounded. “My father is a hardworking man and has told me that nothing comes easy. You have to work for everything,” says Ison. “Booda is the hardest working person I know, no matter where he is,” says fellow senior Dvan Molden. “He doesn’t care if its school, the field, or the court, he is going to make sure he excels in it all. Now, as his senior year is progressing, and after all of the hours of hard work at practice, in the gym, and in the classroom, Ison is seeing all of it pay off and can finally cross one thing off of his to-do list: he no longer has to factor the recruitment process into his day. Ison has verbally committed to attend the University of Northern Colorado and will be playing football there next fall.

funny person to be around and he lives by his favorite quote ‘day by day to see a better day’. He’s my brother for life.” The excitement of what happens on the field is short-lived, but how you leave people feeling after having an encounter with them is long lasting. Those who have built any type of relationship with Ison could attest to the fact that when you talk to him, you are not talking to an athlete, you are talking to an intelligent young man who falls in line with the Moreau Catholic mission of developing the hearts and minds of students.

Of the over one million high school student-athletes who play football, only 72,788 will go on to play at an NCAA school – a rate of only 6.7%. Of that same one million high school studentathletes, only 2.6% will play in Division I. Jullen “Booda” Ison is soon to be part of that select group. When asked if putting in all this work was worth it for something that was not guaranteed, Ison never once hesitated before saying yes. “It’s definitely worth it. It’s just a beautiful game.”

Vice Principal Katie Teekel reinforces this point, “It is off the field where Booda perhaps shines the brightest – through his determination in the classroom, the positive example he sets for his peers, and his sincerity in building relationships with faculty and students alike. Booda takes great pride in what it means to be a Mariner, and believes not only in putting the work in for his personal success, but also making sure those around him rise to the same standards and expectations. That is what makes him so special. He not only models excellence, he demands it from those around him.”

Christine Ton ‘17 Most people couldn’t imagine leaving their friends, family, and home to go to school in another country on the other side of the world. But Christine Ton, a senior here at Moreau Catholic, is one of the more than forty international students for whom it is a reality. With the help of her teachers, administrators, and fellow classmates, Ton was able to find her rhythm. One teacher in particular, Ms. Jessica Guidotti ‘04, who was Ton’s English teacher, really supported her from when she first arrived. “Ms. Guidotti was really helpful from the beginning. It was her encouragement that really got me involved in Earthwise. I had always helped out as a nonofficer, but she noticed how dedicated I was and suggested that I become an officer. That’s how I became a garden coordinator,” said Ton. Ton had never imagined herself as an officer for any club, but she really enjoyed gardening and became passionate about Earthwise. Her hard work is evident, shown through the expansion of our school garden throughout the last two years. “During my sophomore year, when they started the garden, I helped as a nonmember, for my junior year they recruited me as the garden coordinator. I just love gardening. By working in the garden, from bare land to giving back with healthy food choices, it makes me dedicated to the garden, and to the club.” by Serena Famalett ‘17

Rebecca Quintero ‘11 The time I spent attending Moreau Catholic was not an average high school experience as I have come to understand. Just like any other student, I worked hard in my classes, played sports, worked a part-time job, volunteered in the community, and enjoyed time with my friends. Yet, through it all, the greatest lessons I learned at Moreau Catholic were the importance of leadership, community, and advocacy, which have all contributed to my career today. When I graduated Moreau Catholic in 2011, I moved to Seattle, Washington to attend Seattle University, a Jesuit Institution. A new city, new faces, and new traditions; I was surrounded by unfamiliar territory. However, this was no obstacle as Moreau Catholic had wellequipped me with the tools to build a new community for myself. When I first started college I had an inclination that I wanted to become a dentist, but it was not until an extraordinary experience while working at a soup kitchen that it became clear that I wanted to be a Public Health Dentist.

I realize that the encouragement I received at Moreau Catholic, the time the teachers took to advocate for me, and the lifelong community I was surrounded by have all been contributing factors to my foundation. During my time in college, I had the opportunity to hold various leadership positions as I worked toward this dream. To be specific, I started the first Pre-Dental club on campus, I was Vice-President of the Pre-Health Club, I served as a Science and Engineering

Peer Mentor, and I worked as a Student Admissions Representative. My greatest accomplishment was beginning and organizing two successful dental drives. I was able to collect over 1,000 hygiene products for the underserved population in the Greater Seattle Area. In 2015, I became a first-generation college graduate, and I received a Bachelors of Science in General Science with a Specialization in Chemistry and Biology. After this accomplishment, my next step was dental school. Untraditionally, I decided to take a gap year to gain work experience in the dental field while I underwent the yearlong dental school application process. I worked in a dental office with six different specialty dentists, all of whom taught me so much about dentistry. A year later, I am pleased to announce I was accepted into Marquette University School of Dentistry in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. On August 26, 2016, with great honor, I stood before my family and colleagues and took my oath into the health profession. In four short years I will be the first doctor in my family.

As I look back on my achievements, I realize that the encouragement I received at Moreau Catholic, the time the teachers took to advocate for me, and the lifelong community I was surrounded by have all been contributing factors to my foundation. Seattle University and Marquette University School of Dentistry both stress the importance of educating the whole person, that is, the heart, the soul, and the mind. I once thought this was a new concept to me, but, I can say, I am grateful to Moreau Catholic for implementing this into my education years ago - and for that, I have so much to be thankful for. by John Forsyth

Over the last few years, our football attendance has almost doubled, mostly due to the amazing teams and players that we have had and continue to have in the program. Coach Andrew Cotter and his top-notch staff are poised to make a run for a State Playoff appearance behind one of the top running backs in California, Jullen “Booda” Ison, and a host of talented players surrounding him. However, with all of the exciting action on the field, it can be easy to overlook the people who work tirelessly behind the scenes to help make sure that our home games go on without a hitch.

One of the most incredible aspects of our volunteers is how many of them don’t have students at the school anymore. They become part of the Mariner family and stay because they feel appreciated, and enjoy doing service for our current families and students. According to Chuck Reichel, who organizes the barbecue group, of 13 volunteers, “Volunteering has helped make my family’s years at Moreau Catholic a very rewarding experience. I feel like I’m a Mariner as much as my kids are! I plan to volunteer long after my youngest has graduated.”

All together it takes over 70 volunteers to produce a quality football experience, and this doesn’t even include the campus supervisors, administrators, and faculty that work the games along with the Hayward Police who come by to provide security.

Whether it is announcing games from the score booth, holding the chains on the field, or selling Mariner Wear by the bleachers, there is no shortage of jobs needing to be done that our volunteers tackle without hesitation. This group of parents, students, alumni, and just about every group in-between come together as one to achieve a common goal, just like the team on the field that they are there to support.

From the moment you walk through Capurro Plaza and Foxworthy Gate, our team of volunteers is ready and waiting to ensure you have the best possible experience while you are at the game. When you talk to them about why they do it, they all seem to have a recurring answer: they do it because they feel rewarded in some intrinsic way.

Sean Mullen, who has been volunteering as a member of the chain gang since 2002 when his son was on the football team, may have summed it up the best. “Moreau Catholic is family. It is fun to be part of the Moreau Catholic family.”

“Once I got started, there was no going back. The experience that you go through is phenomenal, and the friendships one acquires when the fans keep coming back again and again are an extra bonus,” said retired Spanish teacher, Yolanda Martin, who has been a longtime volunteer at the ticket booth. Loretta Perkins, who oversees the snack bar and its crew of 20 volunteers, had a similar response “I’ve always enjoyed helping and serving others. I get great pleasure serving the Moreau Catholic students, families,

Built with Dedication Not that long ago, the idea of a Moreau Catholic Water Polo team was little more than that – an idea. What started out as a small group of students waking up each morning to go and play for fun at the Hayward Plunge has turned into a program featuring 3 teams (1 junior varsity and 2 varsity) playing in the Mission Valley Athletic League. The group that started the momentum included Johnny Landavazo ’14, who had played club water polo outside of Moreau Catholic. He and the other students would get together in the mornings and he shared his skills with them and taught them the basics of the game. Ms. Ana Paterson would join them at the pool to help coach this committed group of amateur players. It was this group that eventually convinced the Director of Athletics, Christine Krisman, to form a team and hold formal practices and scrimmages. The fledgling team was coached by Johnny Landavazo’s father, Ted, and they began to grow the program into one that would be ready to compete in league play by the fall of 2014.

The team brought in a full-time head coach, Mia Mae Cummings, who had spent 5 years as both an assistant and

head coach at Half Moon Bay High School. She took the job despite the fact that her family was relocating to Portland, Oregon due to her husband’s job being moved there. “I was in awe of this group of kids who had the determination to make something of what they knew very little about,” said Cummings.

“ Because pool time is rented, we have to manage all of our practices within a 2 ½ hour timeframe” “Our program has been blessed by the enthusiasm of these sport-seeking students who may not know much about water polo but are daring enough to at least come out and give it a chance.” Coach Cummings is now in her third season in charge of the team, along with assistant coaches Father Bruce Cecil and Ms. Ana Patterson. She commutes to and from Portland every two weeks to be a part of this exciting new program and to help it continue to grow into an athletic powerhouse. As a program that lives and breathes in the water, it has been a challenge to find a “home field advantage” since Moreau Catholic does not have a pool of its own. “We practice off campus at San Leandro High School and play our home games at Cal State East Bay. We practice all three teams, both varsity teams and one junior varsity, at the same time. Because pool time is rented we have to manage

all of our practices within a 2 ½ hour timeframe,” said Cummings. “Playing in our own home pool will be a great advantage. My team and I hope to see a Moreau Catholic pool come to fruition soon.” While they wait for a pool to call their own, the Moreau Catholic water polo team continues to learn the intricacies of a complex game. “A water polo athlete is expected to swim at a very fast pace, will need to tread water for minutes at a time, all while incorporating the skills from basketball, soccer, hockey, football, and wrestling all at the same time. And if that’s not impressive enough, they are not allowed to stand or touch the bottom of the pool during the entire course of the game,” said Cummings. Now in their third season, the team recently earned its first league win as the JV Boys team defeated Mission San Jose 4-3. The victory is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the coaches, players, and families who have given their heartfelt support to the water polo program. The win is just the first of many to come, and the entire Moreau Catholic community will be cheering them on all along the way.

Freedom of Expression in Visual Arts she teaches and translate that into pieces of art “that are uniquely their own.”

Karen Thomas knew she wanted to build an art program that would excite her students in the way art has excited her throughout her life. “There’s a beauty in creativity and no single way to express it,” she says, citing cartooning, digital arts and graphic design as just a few styles her students explore. Thomas is in her seventh year teaching in Moreau Catholic’s Visual Arts Department, which offers 10 semester and full-year classes including four freshman classes. Art students can emphasize twodimensional arts with courses in drawing and painting, or threedimensional art with sculpture and clay courses. Each track culminates with the AP Studio Art class. A native of Austin, Texas, Thomas comes from a family of teachers and graduated from the University of Austin with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and then headed to the San Francisco Art Institute where she earned her Master of Fine Arts degree in printmaking. She remains a working artist outside of school and regularly submits her work to shows and exhibits throughout the year. “The fact that I am out there in the real art world keeps me aware of trends in the industry,” says Thomas.

When Thomas arrived at Moreau, one of her first accomplishments was turning an otherwise empty hallway into a showplace for student art. The Brother Stephen Walsh, CSC, Memorial Gallery located on the second floor adjacent to the library is the location of four of the six student art shows held each year including the upcoming “Art Builds Respect” show that runs through Oct. 30.

Freedom of expression is the strength of the visual arts department, she says, and one that permeates through all classes. Assignments begin with parameters like “stained glass” or “line drawing”, but that’s where the definitive assignment ends and the freedom begins for students to interpret and apply the art skills they have learned. Thomas says she encourages her students to get up out of their chairs, walk around and look at each other’s work. While other high school art education classes concentrate on copying famous works to hone skills, she encourages her students to take the skills and techniques

The growth of the visual art department from her part-time position to full time with 25 students enrolled in AP Art, the largest class to date makes Thomas proud. She says she’d like to offer an art history elective and even AP art history next and is grateful for the school’s support of the arts. “We live in such a swipe-to-the-left culture,” she adds, but she encourages her students to slow down and “be a critical observer of the visual world and appreciate that art takes labor and care. Even if they don’t ‘make art’, maybe they can become a patron of the arts,” she adds. by Monica Lander

2016 MOREAU CATHOLIC GOLF CLASSIC BENEFITING THE BROTHER GARY STONE, CSC, MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP It was a beautiful day for a round of golf and an evening of fundraising and camaraderie at the 34th annual Moreau Catholic Golf Classic. The rolling greens of the Sequoyah Country Club were the perfect backdrop for the sellout crowd of 144 golfers, including 48 Moreau Catholic alumni who took to the course. More than $51,000 was raised throughout the day and into the evening at the silent auction and raffle that benefitted the Br. Gary Stone, CSC, Memorial Scholarship. Year of Building Respect On a warm, late summer day in 1841, The Congregation of Holy Cross first arrived in America. Sent by founder Blessed Basil Moreau, five Holy Cross Brothers and Father Edward Sorin disembarked in lower Manhattan on the day the Church celebrates the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. These French religious missionaries, strangers in a new land, made a beeline for Saint Peter’s Church in New York City to celebrate Mass and thank God for their safe passage across the Atlantic (there is still a plaque in Saint Peter’s Church commemorating this event). Father Sorin and the Brothers later ventured to rural Indiana and soon thereafter founded what would become the University of Notre Dame. 175 years to the day, Moreau Catholic High School held its annual Opening of School Mass on that same feast day, the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. The spiritual opening of another school year brought the entire school community together in the Main Gym for the liturgy, led by our school’s chaplain Father Bruce Cecil, CSC. The Opening of School Mass was a time to celebrate our faith together, this year on a day that both honors the Cross, the most powerful and visible symbol of our faith, and commemorates the day Holy Cross first arrived in the United States. It also allows the community to welcome and formally commission the new members of the faculty and staff,

and to bless the student leaders from the Campus Ministry Team, Student Government, and Link Crew. Alumni, parents, and friends joined teachers, staff, and students in a wonderful sea of red and gold as we prayed, sang, and celebrated the Eucharist. As a Catholic school in the Holy Cross tradition, we use the four Holy Cross themes to help instruct, form, and inform our students about what it means to be a Holy Cross man and a Holy Cross woman. The four themes—Building Respect, Educating Hearts and Minds, Being Family, and Bringing Hope— provide an opening for students to go deeper into the charisms of the Congregation of Holy Cross and have a broader understanding of Blessed Basil Moreau’s vision for education. This year, we celebrate the theme of Building Respect. Freshman students were introduced to the theme during Orientation Day, and each class council incorporates the theme into its leadership and spirit week activities. Conversations in classes about the dimensions of respect open students to different perspectives and allow them to explore the theme in their daily

lives. The words Building Respect can be seen around campus this year, and served as the foundation for the annual faculty/ staff retreat in August, when teachers and staff explored the seven mission values of a Holy Cross education: faith, family, diversity, global perspective, building community, embracing innovation, and being informed. Please keep our school community in your prayers this year as we embark upon our 52nd year of educating minds and forming hearts in the Holy Cross tradition.

Jeffrey Keyes. I was ordained a priest in 1991 and this year I celebrate my silver jubilee. I served 18 years in the Oakland Diocese, and now serve as chaplain for the Marian Sisters of Santa Rosa and teach sophomores at Cardinal Newman High School.

After graduating from Moreau, Joe attended CSU Hayward (now East Bay) for a degree in Political Science and Santa Clara University where he received his J.D. Joe has practiced in the field of Workers Compensation Law since he was admitted to the California Bar in 1980. He is a sole practitioner at The Law Office of Joseph V. Capurro in San Jose, CA, and has represented injured workers before the Workers Compensation Appeals Board, various California Courts of Appeal, and the California Supreme Court. Juliann Marie Butz graduated from St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas with a Bachelor of Science in Digital Media Management on May 7, 2016. Her time at St. Edward’s allowed her to participate in many campus ministry events, she traveled to New York to help under privileged children and Bangalore, India on a International Immersion Orphan Outreach. Completed a Global Studies Program at Walailak University in Thailand, mastering a photo documentary on transgendered males in Thai society, commonly known as ladyboys. This photo documentary was displayed at the Walailak University and at St. Edward’s. In her free time enjoys Yoga, earned her Advanced Open Water Scuba Certification in San Pedro, Belize and adopted a rescue dog named Travis. The foundation she received from Moreau Catholic High School and St. Edward’s University (both sponsored by the Brothers of the Holy Cross) has opened many opportunities for Juliann to continues to grow in her community. Juliann is currently a Social Specialist at GSD&M Advertising Agency in Austin, TX.

Zach Thomas, currently living in Santa Fe, New Mexico with my wife Nicole of three years. After having spent my career in the field of urban planning, I decided on a change and am currently working for the New Mexico Finance Authority in the field of water policy and legislation as it pertains to infrastructure financing within the state. Nicole is an archeologist and historic planner for the City of Santa Fe.

Amanda (Ruel) Carey, was diagnosed with stage II breast cancer on September 16, 2015. There was no family history of cancer. After 6 rounds of chemo and a bilateral mastectomy on February 26, 2016 it was determined there was no evidence of disease and I am now in clinical remission. I used scalp hypothermia to save my hair during chemo.

Amanda Aguilar. Amanda just received her master’s degree in Journalism and Public Affairs at American University in Washington, D.C. She recently finished an internship with NBC News4 and moved to Kansas to be a reporter for KSN-TV. Prior to graduate school, Amanda was a reporter for the Pleasanton Weekly, an online newspaper. In May 2013, she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Communication and Media Studies from Dominican University of California.

Barry Weiss Saint Teresa of Calcutta once said, “Spread love everywhere you go and let no one ever come to you without leaving happier.” I read those words and think of Barry Weiss. Mr. Weiss died of a heart attack July 2, 2016 while camping with his family at the Russian River. He was 67.

The responses were universal, almost every single person thought that it was a horrible idea. When we told them those words were directly from the Declaration of Independence, they were incensed, angry and told us we were wrong. It was a fascinating exercise on so many levels.

Mr. Weiss taught history and government at Moreau Catholic from 1974-1983. The impact on his students is immeasurable. I had the pleasure of having Mr. Weiss for several classes during my time at Moreau Catholic and continued to stay in touch throughout the years. He was an amazing teacher and person who always went out of his way to make sure that you were engaged and learning. He introduced his students to the bigger world. During the 1980 presidential election, Mr. Weiss had us work on political campaigns as part of our assignment. He made us read the newspaper every day to stay up to date on current events that shaped the world – our world. I remember having to do a street survey in Hayward. We asked people if they agreed with the quote, “That whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to affect their safety and happiness…”

difference in our world. I know I am speaking for many who had the amazing experience of having such an impactful teacher as Mr. Weiss. Although it seems like a lifetime ago, when we all sat in our desks facing each other and debating the crisis in El Salvador or Nicaragua, those memories continue to shape how we conduct ourselves in this world today. Mr. Weiss left Moreau Catholic to pursue a career in Parks and Recreation. In typical Barry Weiss fashion, he mentored countless professionals, served as President of the California Park & Recreation Society, and was selected as a member of the prestigious American Academy for Recreation Administration.

Mr. Weiss lived and breathed his work as a teacher and his enthusiasm was contagious. He chaperoned a large group of us on the Close Up trip to Washington DC in November, 1981. He was even able to get our class invited to the White House to meet Ed Meese, Chief of Staff for President Reagan. We sat in the Red Room and Mr. Meese spoke about his role and his work with the president. It was a life-changing trip. I knew from that moment I wanted to be involved in serving others and making a

In December 2008, he retired to travel and enjoy life, including being a grandpa to four grandchildren, but still remained active in the world of parks and recreation as a consultant. Mr. Weiss led and inspired us to think, reflect and discover.
