ANNUAL REPORT 2018-2019

Dear Mariners, In thanksgiving and gratitude, we present to you our 2018-19 Annual Report. The names listed inside represent all the members of the community who made financial contributions to Moreau Catholic during the last fiscal year. We are so thankful and blessed to receive this tremendous support! There are so many more members of our community who have contributed in-kind donations, who have volunteered their time and expertise, and who have attended our arts and athletics events as supporters and fans. God has graced us with a wonderful and caring community, and we offer our heartfelt thanks for all you do for our students and our school. There are also a few very inspirational stories inside about alumni, families, and students who are making a difference in the Mariner community. Countless other stories remain to be told, and we invite you to connect with us and let us share your impactful stories! Moreau Catholic continues, after 54 years, to be dedicated to the legacy and values of the Congregation of Holy Cross and its founder, Blessed Basil Moreau. Each and every day we strive to be a college preparatory school with a deep commitment to outstanding achievement. As a community of faith, we prepare our wonderful students through academic, social, and spiritual experiences, all designed to form and transform them into responsible citizens of our increasingly global and technologically-rich society. We do all this with an outstanding faculty and staff who truly care about our students, our mission, and Catholic education. The impact of your support is tremendous in helping us complete our mission successfully. Academic excellence and rigor depend on that support; artistic creativity and productions depend on that support; the transformational experience of being a Mariner scholar-athlete depends on that support; and the values-rich theology, campus ministry, and liturgical programs depend on that support. Please continue to invest in our students, our school, our teachers, and our mission—we are a great school because of your great support!

In gratitude,

Terry Lee President

Investing in Potential Theology chair, James Hannon ’02, shares how his history with Moreau shapes his altruism

Our faculty invests many hours beyond the school day to provide compassionate, Catholic education to our students. While that investment of time often exceeds contractual obligations, many of the faculty and staff also choose to invest monetarily to the well-being of the school. One such faculty investor is James Hannon ’02. The Hannon family is somewhat of an institution at Moreau Catholic. Between Michael K. Hannon ’74 (James’ father) and his siblings, James and all five of his siblings, and several cousins, nearly two dozen Hannons have come through the halls of Moreau, not to mention various spouses who are also Mariner alumni. As James describes it, “I always thought of Moreau as ‘the destination’ for my family. That was like the place where you went.” When James was in 7th grade, he was diagnosed with attention-deficit disorder (ADD). His parents warned him that he might not be able to do Moreau, which James calls “devastating” news. But James did get accepted to Moreau and flourished. He fell in love with cross country and became editor-in-chief of the student newspaper. He says, “I feel like Moreau gives the students an opportunity to be leaders when maybe they don’t think they can be leaders.” Because of mentors who believed in him, James was able to tap into his own potential, and he hopes to do the same for his students now. James’ interest in studying theology was born at Moreau. He highlights several faculty who shaped how he approaches theological study: “Peter Shelley is like my mentor. He was instrumental in my passion for Catholicism. But at the same time, I think about Michael Steeb who really got me to question a lot of my beliefs, really investigate whether other world faiths have the answer. And really what is the answer? I think about Amy Armstrong who was a first year teacher as I was a first year student at Moreau, and we kind of navigated that time together and now we’re colleagues. Amy Armstrong was so passionate about world affairs and so passionate about mindfulness. That meditative practice really stuck with me, I don’t want to say in spite of, but in concert with my Catholic faith.” James became interested in teaching after being somewhat of a student teacher for his journalism class in high school while his teacher was on maternity leave. For a short time he thought he might be a sports journalist, but decided that life was not for him. After graduating from Saint Mary’s College of California, James began to pursue a master’s degree in theology from the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology at the Graduate Theological Union. Through a series of serendipitous events, he was hired as a theology teacher for the 2007-2008 school year.

He recounts, “I was stunned, but I was SO excited. I loved it. I was like, this is it! It was really hard, my first year of teaching, but it was such a blast. Just being up there in front of the kids and interacting with the students, getting to know their lives, and getting to know their stories. I realized in that first year, I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.” Per his calculations, James has taught roughly 1,500 students in his 13 year tenure. “It makes you realize how much of an impact you can have on people’s lives,” he remarks. James invests his time in Moreau through teaching, chairing the Theology department, and coaching cross country, but he also invests fiscally as a member of the Two-Hour Club. Each year, faculty and staff can choose to contribute to the faculty appeal. One option is to join the Hour Club, which means investing one hour’s worth of each paycheck to whatever program they like, such as scholarship funds or student programs. Some folks, like James, go so far as to be members of the TwoHour Club. In an effort to explain this dedication to Moreau Catholic, James breaks it down as follows: “I think of my job at Moreau as a marriage. I give everything to my family. I sacrifice a lot for my family. And they sacrifice a lot for me. I think Moreau sacrifices a lot for me...They provide me with a space to be creative. They provide me with a space to be passionate. They listen to what I’m about and they provide me with opportunities to implement [my ideas]. I’ve heard the stories of my students and I’ve been really moved by a lot of what they’re going through, so I give my money in order that it goes back to the students. I mean that’s what it’s all about. I think any teacher would agree, the reason why we’re up here is for the kids. That they feel comfortable, they feel safe in the classroom. And any way I can make that happen, I will.” In his life outside of Moreau, James is married to fellow Mariner, Theresa (Bell) Hannon ’00. They have two children—Owen and Eve—who James often brings on campus, to the point that Eve comments on her own recognition: “I’m like really popular at Moreau, right dad?” You’re a Hannon, Eve. So, yeah, you’re pretty popular.

David Hong ’20 is nothing short of a 21st century renaissance man. He is part entrepreneur, part environmental activist, part socially conscious humanitarian. He is also a full time high school student who is vice president of the Associated Student Body, president of a highly active cocurricular club, and on the varsity volleyball team, among other things. His company, David’s EcoSoaps, makes soaps that are completely biodegradable as well as nourishing and safe for sensitive skin. As if that weren’t enough, with each bar sold, David’s EcoSoaps donates a bar to Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore location in Oakland. Habitat then puts the soap into their houses, at once promoting a sense of environmental consciousness within the community and providing a tool for helping others mitigate their skin issues. This is truly a passion project for David that grew out of his own struggles with eczema. When he was in middle school, David began struggling with outbreaks of eczema that were so itchy and painful that they distracted him from his school work. “I noticed that my skin would burn with the use of Dove soap and other commercial soap products. And after I would leave the shower it would be drier and itchier than normal, and it would exacerbate my skin irritation,” he recounts. This observation sparked David to investigate what was in the products that he was using on his skin. What he found was a multitude of chemicals that not only contributed to his skin irritation, but were also toxic to the environment. He began asking himself, “Has anyone ever tried to create their own soaps? Why isn’t this a problem that everyone’s concerned about?”

A self described animal lover, David has grown up with an interest in protecting the natural world. In his freshman year biology class, he learned more about the detrimental effects of human actions on the environment and developed a passion for environmental justice. He became a member and is now president of Earthwise, Moreau Catholic’s environmental sustainability club. Over the next few years, David began experimenting with making his own soaps. He researched soap bases that were both moisturizing and eco-friendly, and he found that goat’s milk was an ideal base. He tested combinations of ingredients to find “the optimal saponification level. Basically, the level at which the triglycerides in the goat milk and lye fuse together to create a soapy solid which allows for soap to be functional.” By junior year, David had a couple of years of soap making under his belt, and felt ready for the next step. While in his Social Justice class last year, David found the right moment to take this project to the next level. As part of the Social Justice course, students are expected to complete a capstone project. David decided to use this opportunity to create an environmentally and socially conscious business with this soaps. He created a website through which to sell his soaps and began partnering with Habitat for Humanity. In an effort to supplement his knowledge, David petitioned to audit an upper division summer course called Water and Sanitation Justice at UC Berkeley. Through this course, David learned more about eutrophication, that is the excess amounts of phosphates in water bodies that cause overgrowth of algae. David explains, “When the algae die, their decomposition

uses up the oxygen in water bodies causing the ecosystem to become hypoxic—lacking oxygen. Lack of oxygen kills off fish, that decomposition takes up more oxygen, and the situation worsens until the water body is dead.” His professor also informed him that sewage treatment plants are currently ill-equipped to filter out all chemicals of commercial

“Why isn’t this a problem that everyone’s concerned about?” products. This motivated David, more than ever, to share his soaps with his broader community, prompting him to start David’s EcoSoaps. David is considering different career paths to ultimately pursue, but will start by majoring in environmental science. One path would be going into sustainable development, which would lead him to work on creating solutions for large scale environmental issues. Another path would take him the route of medical school toward becoming a dermatologist, allowing him to help others with skin conditions such as his own. No matter what career path he chooses, David does hope to grow his business and his brand, and eventually expand past soaps. We wish him the best of luck and are proud to call David a Mariner! David’s EcoSoaps sells fully customizable soaps in fun shapes like turtles and hibiscus flowers. The bases, scents, and colors are all biodegradable and gentle on skin. Paying it

FORWARD For some Moreau Catholic families, being a Mariner is in their blood. Like the Wuelfing/Slivinsky family. Monica (Wuelfing) Slivinsky ’87, her siblings, and several cousins came through Moreau. She and her husband, Barry, sent all three of their children - Mitchell ’16, Adam ’19, and Mia ’23 - here as well. For the Slivinskys, being part of the Mariner family means committing more time to the school than the seven hours of the school day and giving more financially than the monthly tuition check. To the Slivinskys, being part of the Mariner family means honoring other families who are making difficult sacrifices to be here and celebrating the excellent education that Moreau students receive. Monica recounts with admiration the hard work and sacrifices her father—a tile setter—and her mother—a homemaker—made to send her and her siblings to Moreau. She also recognizes that, in today’s economy, a family with a similar arrangement would not be able to afford to send multiple children to Moreau, which is a significant factor as to why she and Barry invest in Moreau Catholic. She says, “Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined that we would be in a position to actually be able to help others that are making those same sacrifices. But I have great respect for those families that are

working so hard because they believe in Catholic education. My upbringing makes me really, really happy to help out when we can.”

example of their younger son, Adam, who was in the inaugural AP Environmental Sciences class and used what he learned there to shape his capstone project. While Monica and her relatives were embedded in the Mariner community, Barry grew up in Livermore, California and knew nothing about Moreau Catholic. Yet, his shorter experience with Moreau has inspired him to be a member of the finance and investment committees, and this year become one of the newest members of the Moreau Catholic Board of Trustees. Whether through investment of time or money, the Slivinskys give to Moreau in order to pay it forward. As Barry sums up, “We’ve been blessed with so much, and Monica and I, we didn’t really start with much when we were married. As soon as we could give back financially, we’ve done that. And we really come to focus on local needs. Things we feel passionately about. Moreau is one of those things that we feel passionately about. It feels good to give to Moreau’s programs or scholarship funds or whatever it is that the school needs because it has immediate, tangible impact.”

Monica and Barry knew that they wanted their Catholic values to be integral to their children’s education. As Monica puts it, “It was always our long term vision that our kids would continue in Catholic school all the way through high school. I don’t think we ever thought anything else about it... We just knew Catholic school was the path.” Though they gave their eldest child his choice of high school, Mitchell chose to attend Moreau and had a good experience. This has become yet another driving factor in the Slivinsky family’s generosity toward Moreau. Barry says, “It’s fun to give back to a school where our sons had such a great experience, where our daughter has just walked in the door as a freshman.” In the 32 years since Monica graduated, the world has changed in many ways, a fact not lost on the Slivinskys. What they appreciate is the ways in which Moreau has changed too. “I think that [Moreau has] focused in on looking at those bigger issues and bringing those issues into the curriculum... to really help prepare students for what they are going to do with their future, and to think about how they want to enact change,” comments Monica.

In addition to their love for Moreau, the Slivinskys love spending time together as a family, especially on hikes and trips to their home in Truckee. Mitchell is finishing his time at UC Davis, studying microbiology, while Adam is just starting at UC Santa Cruz, along with ten other MCHS graduates from his class. Mia is wrapping up her first semester at Moreau. Monica runs a private practice as a speech pathologist, and Barry is an accountant for Adobe. This tight knit family invites other Mariner families to invest in this community as well. Monica states, “I feel like it was so important to us to be part of a community, like a Catholic school community, Catholic church community...and I think our kids are better because of that. That involvement is always a great way to spend your time.”

Additionally, both Barry and Monica appreciate how Moreau has integrated these changes into the theological curriculum with things like the Social Justice class and capstone project as well as student supports like the Saint Andre program. Barry adds, “I think both of our boys who have graduated have a good, worldly view of things. They think deeply about issues of the day, and I think a lot of that was cultivated here.” They share the
