Christ Church Looking forward… Or looking back?

Do you tend to look forward to things you may have arranged like a show, a holiday, or meeting a friend for a catch up? Or do you enjoy thinking about the things you have already done and the memories that they evoke?

In the Bible there are many examples that show us how Jesus was able to teach the disciples how we should forgive those that may have done something wrong in their past and forgiveness can be a very hard task in itself. Jesus said at the last supper that some of the disciples will betray him which at the time they could not believe.

I know when I used to babysit for friends in my 20’s I would listen to the rules parents had for putting children to bed and what to do if they got up. I remember thinking I am not going to be so soft or lenient with my own children. Yet 10 years later there I was listening to my baby cry and the emotions telling me one thing while the latest theory was to leave them for 5 minutes (which seemed like an hour) before checking they were ok and not picking them up for a hug. It taught me a life lesson that we can all be judgemental when it isn’t us that are in the situation.

I try to live ‘in the moment’ absorbing all the good things that happen in my day, but I also love planning things for the future which I know will bring joy. Recently I witnessed my mum receiving an Honouree Fellowship from the UEA (University of East Anglia) for services to Nurse Education, while my mum has always been inspirational this was such an accolade. We set off as a family to see this happen, but traffic & time were not on our side. Although I witnessed the Nurse who benefited from mum’s support give an incredible speech, I was devastated not to have seen the fellowship given to my mum.

You may have memories that are mixed like this and with Faith I know that I may not be perfect, things may not go the way I planned them to, but God will believe in us if we believe in him. Our summer brings the joy of families taking time to be together and not having to watch the time getting to school, picking up children, helping with homework, clubs and termly activities. I remember that school holidays can be hard work as parents look at ways to entertain the children and juggle work commitments with making memories with fast growing families.

We have been blessed with having the option to go to Keswick to stay with family over the years, but when the children were young, I actually couldn’t wait to get back to work and school routine as there was always a challenge to keep everyone happy, yet being at home and going to work I could enjoy the routine of each day. Now my family are on the verge of leaving home I remember how lovely it was to have those opportunities, however challenging they were, to get away.

As a Christian I hope that I don’t take the simple things for granted and I believe while things may not go to plan God has a way of helping us reflect on the good things. I hope your summer brings you many things to look forward to and when I write again you will have great memories of your summer too tell others about.
