Welcome back to the 19th hole. The US Open didn’t disappoint and we have a new major champion in Wyndham Clark. After being told by his mother just before her passing to go and win big, he did just that! It’s amazing to see someone work through personally tragedy and have success after. Finishing at -10 just one shot ahead of Rory Mcllroy, once again he finishes close to another major title. Surely it’s just a matter of time…. Isn’t it?

This month we will be previewing THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP at Royal Liverpool. THE BIG QUESTION… Who will win this year? My pick will as always be RORY, he has to break his run and go one place better this time. PLEASE!!

COACHES CORNER – HOW TO GET OUT OF THE ROUGH!

So with the US OPEN on the television last month and you will have all seen the worlds best have to recover from the rough. Below are some helpful tips from escaping these tricky lies. If you put these simply tips into play next time you’re in a tricky spot in the rough, you will find yourself back in play and making better scores.

Things to DO

Don’t get too brave from these lies, select enough loft to get the ball from these lies. After selecting a club opening face slightly will allow you to stop the club head closing at impact by the longer grass length.

Reposition your weight, shift across onto your lead foot. This will allow you to create a steeper angle of attack into the ball and with the lofted club you have selected will give you a great chance to escape this lie.

Swing steeper and hold on tight, being steeper and holding it a bit tighter to the club through impact will help you stop the club face closing through impact and get you back into play.

Things to AVOID

Don’t try and help it up and out… you have changed your set up to help yourself come down steeper so don’t try and help it out, and lean back. Just commit to these changes and swing down and through the shot, try not to let your weight fall onto your back foot.

Do not expect full control over this shot, remember it’s a shot you’re either trying to get back into position or are happy if it hits the green or surrounding areas.

If you expect to much from these lies then you will often find yourself playing the same shot again or worse, get back in play first before taking on shots to the green.

Enjoy your golf in July and I will speak to you again next month.

Hopefully putting these simply steps into your game when you need to escape some tricky lies will help.

If you are having problems with this or any other part of your game, then I would be pleased to assist you in enjoying this game more. As this should be the most important aspect for anyone’s round of golf.
