A LETTER to my SCHOOL Below is a short writing assignment: This exercise will accomplish a few things: • Help a yearbook staff get in touch with what the school really means to them. • Give you, as the adviser, an in site into the personalities of your staff. • Help the staff understand how to add detail when interviewing others about their school experience. • Encourage theme ideas by helping the staff understand what your school means to the students who attend it. Pick a place in your school (The physical building, a room that a class or activity is held, the school bus, a athletic field, etc) 2. How is this place typical? 3. What makes this place unique? 4. What smells come to mind when thinking about this place (at least 7) 5. Close your eyes and describe the sounds that remind you of this place 6. How has this placed altered your life? 7. How has this place changed since you have been there? 8. Who do you associate with this place and Why? 9. When do you go to this place: describe the time of day, length of time you spend there etc. 10. Draw an aerial sketch of the place add specific details. WRITING ASSISNGMENT In 20 MINUTES write a letter to this place explaining why it is special to you... is it gratitude, love, remorse? PEER EDITING Have the staff read thier letters out loud to the class. Have the staff ask questions and look for more detail. REVISING Have the students revise their letters using the details that were explored during the peer editing.
