a little history On December 10, 1807, an act of the General Assembly formed our beautiful county from sections of neighboring Baldwin. Georgia’s 30th county was named in honor of Revolutionary War General (and later, Virginia Congressman) Daniel Morgan, who is best remembered for his victory over the British at Cowpens in 1781.

The City of Madison, incorporated on December 12, 1809, was named in honor of United States President James Madison, and was subsequently established as the county seat of the newly formed Morgan County. The community was designed using a typical town square layout and, in 1809, the first town lots were sold. Madison quickly became the main economic center of Morgan County, and developed a bustling commercial downtown. Being on the stagecoach route between Philadelphia via Charleston and New Orleans, and in the crossroads of two major railroad lines, the community of Madison enjoyed the benefits of location-based commerce. Because it was spared from major destruction during the Civil War due to General Sherman's respect for local resident, pro-Union Senator Joshua Hill, modernday Madison is home to an impressive collection of pre-Civil War and Victorian style architecture. Today, the city's well-maintained architecture continues to boost the area's economy through tourism of its historic district. As for its location, Madison still enjoys an economic advantage, being situated at the intersection of an Interstate and three US highways. Morgan County is also home to the City of Rutledge, founded in 1845, the City of Bostwick, and the City of Buckhead, founded in 1891.

Morgan County is a “Tier 3” county designated by the state for job creation tax credits. Baxalta (previously Baxter Healthcare) is near completion of a new one million-squarefoot, technologically advanced, biomedical manufacturing facility at Stanton Springs, a joint development project of Morgan, Jasper, Walton and Newton counties. This $1 Billion campus is the anchor tenant in a 1500-acre mixed use development located just 15 miles from downtown Madison and a short 2 miles from Georgia Perimeter College. This facility will employ approximately 1500 people when it reaches full production in 2018. In conjunction with this project, the State of Georgia has built a new, cuttingedge training facility to provide hands on training for future biomedical workers.

As Morgan County continues to grow, the community is secure in the knowledge that excellent healthcare services are locally available. Morgan Memorial Hospital has a rich history, dating back to 1960, and is committed to providing an overall high quality, comprehensive healthcare network to the area. Since the first cornerstone was laid over 55 years ago, Morgan Memorial (MMH) has continuously expanded to meet the growing needs of the community. Current services include a 24-hour physician-staffed emergency room; hospitalist program; full-service laboratory; digital diagnostic imaging including CT, X-ray, MRI, mammography, ultrasound and bone density; cardiopulmonary; physical, occupational, and speech therapy, as well as outpatient surgical procedures. MMH also serves the community and surrounding areas through acute care and swing bed programs. As one of only 26 trauma centers in Georgia, Morgan Memorial participates in ongoing programs

of required, specialty trauma courses. This ensures that all staff and physicians are able to uphold the highest standards of innovative and effective emergency care. We are pleased to convey that statistics show a patient’s chance of survival is increased two-fold when taken to a trauma center. A key part of the strategic vision of the Morgan County Hospital Authority is the construction of a replacement hospital facility. Plans are nearing completion and call for the facility to be built on the Hwy 441 bypass. Through a clinical collaboration agreement with Athens Regional Medical Center, physicians from various specialties will see patients and perform procedures in the new facility, providing clinical care closer to home for local residents. Understandably, the Morgan County community has reasons to be proud of our healthcare services and its highly trained staff. As a non-profit organization, Morgan Memorial counts on community support as a vital piece of their success. In fact, local community members were instrumental in raising funds, through

the purchase of bonds, in order to open the original hospital. Two volunteer groups, the Morgan Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and Morgan Memorial Healthcare Foundation, strive to generate awareness and raise funds to ensure that the latest medical technology continues to be available locally.

Proposed plans for new Morgan County High School

The Morgan County Charter School System is committed to using effective “non-negotiable” instructive practices in the areas of student achievement, community and school relationships, school climate, continuous development, and operational effectiveness in every classroom, every day. The goal of our faculty and staff is to promote the success of all students by encouraging them to achieve at their highest level.

HIGHER EDUCATION

MORGAN COUNTY CHARTER SCHOOL SYSTEM

here are approximately 3200 students enrolled on five campuses (including CrossRoads Alternative Education Program) that comprise the Morgan County Charter School System, all of which are located in Madison. Prior to becoming a Charter System in 2011, each school in the system was designated as a Converted Charter School. A Charter System is a local public school district that operates under the terms of a charter between the State Board of Education and the local school district. The system receives flexibility from certain state rules and regulations in exchange for greater accountability. An emphasis is placed upon school-based leadership and decision-making that leads the system to meet the individual needs of all students. A working Strategic Plan guides each school’s Improvement Plan, which provides educators and all stakeholders with student performance targets based on analyzed data, and resources such as technology and Professional Learning opportunities. Four Lottery Preschool classes are housed at Morgan County Primary School, along with students in kindergarten through second grades. A variety of programs are offered at this level, including physical

education, art, music, Spanish, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), special education, gifted education, Language Literacy Connection and the Early Intervention Program for “at risk” students. Children in grades three through five attend Morgan County Elementary School, which has been named a Title I Distinguished School for the third consecutive year. Morgan County Middle School is home to students in grades six through eight and has been named a “Georgia Lighthouse School to Watch” based on academic excellence, developmental responsiveness, social equity and organizational structures and processes. Nationally recognized for its Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate diploma offerings, Morgan County High School also has one of the highest graduation rates in the state. CrossRoads Alternative Educational Program is a separate school for students in grades six through twelve who require an alternative setting because of conduct difficulties. The Morgan County Charter School System Board of Education has been deemed a “Quality Board” by the GA School Boards Association.

Georgia Piedmont Technical College offers more than 100 programs for students that can be taken advantage of prior to high school graduation. Through a joint and dual enrollment program with Morgan County Schools, participants are able to earn high school and college credit simultaneously. Georgia Piedmont has facilities in Morgan, Newton, Rockdale and DeKalb Counties. Established in 1961, Georgia Piedmont Technical College is one of the largest technical colleges in the state of Georgia, and serves over 25,000 students annually. In addition to providing accredited programs, continuing education and adult literacy, the College provides educational training for entry into 100+ skilled and paraprofessional occupations. These programs carry enrollment terms ranging from one to seven terms in length, and lead to a certificate, diploma or an Associate in Applied Sciences degree. Operating in Madison is an extended campus of Georgia Military College (GMC), a coeducational, accredited junior college and career academy that is based in Milledgeville. As a liberal Arts community college, GMC has designed its degree programs to prepare students for transfer to senior level colleges or to enter specific career fields upon graduation. GMC-

Madison offers the opportunity for students to earn Associate in Science and Associate in Applied Sciences degrees. GMC has an open enrollment program and offers courses in the afternoon, evening and on weekends, catering to students who want to attend college while employed. The student body at GMC-Madison includes a variety of age groups and includes recent high school graduates as well as students who have already been in the workforce. There is no military requirement to attend GMC. Georgia Perimeter College is located less than 20 miles from Madison and is a two-year associate degree-granting unit of the University System of Georgia. GPC serves metro Atlanta with multiple campus locations and offers more than 40 programs of study, including Nursing, Business Administration, Education, Dental Hygiene, Criminal Justice and Sign Language Interpreting. On January 6, 2015, it was announced that Georgia Perimeter College would become a part of Georgia State University, thus becoming one of the largest universities in the United States. Although the GPC campus will become a component of the University, it will still maintain its own mission, degrees, and admittance requirements, separately from that of the main campus. The consolidation is expected to take a year to complete. Also within an easy drive are the private Oxford College of Emory University and the University of Georgia.

Heritage Hall Known as Madison’s Antebellum Dame, this 1811 Greek Revival home lies in the heart of downtown Madison and is a popular location for weddings and sightseers. Also known as the Jones-Turnell-Manley House, Heritage Hall has been enjoyed by centuries of families, but is now operated by the Friends of Heritage Hall, Inc., who have maintained it’s glory throughout the last 30 years. Relocated in 1909, the home was pulled by a team of horses to it’s current destination 200 feet away. Today, this antebellum dwelling is celebrated for having housed area nobles such as “Madison’s First Lady,” Sue Reid Walton Manley, and also Dr. Elijah Evans, chairman of the Georgia Female College’s Board of Trustees. Madison Artists Guild The Madison Artists Guild is a terrific little gallery packed with outstanding work from local artists. Madison-Morgan Cultural Center The Madison-Morgan Cultural Center is located in an exquisite Romanesque Revival building originally constructed in 1895 as one of the first multi-grade public schools in the South. This re-purposed facility is now home to permanent museum exhibits that reveal the area’s history, three art galleries that feature rotating exhibits, and a 397-seat Theatre of the Cultural Center. School assemblies were once held in the expansive theatre, but it now hosts thousands of visitors each year who come to enjoy an annual antiques show, the Madison in May Spring Tour of Private Homes, and the Chamber Music Festival. Just outside, the Center’s Front Lawn Sculpture Park exhibits the latest works of contemporary artists, and hosts a popular, annual concert and fireworks display for Independence Day.

Steffen Thomas Museum of Art On the outskirts of Madison, the Steffen Thomas Museum of Art in Buckhead serves as a center of motivation for the creative expression of Georgia’s youth. The museum’s namesake, Steffen Thomas, was a noted sculptor and artist in the Southeast, and was a recipient of many public art commissions. ENRICHMENT Madison-Morgan Cultural Center A beautiful example of Romanesque Revival, this red brick structure was built in 1895 as one of the South’s first graded public schools. Today, it is a vibrant focal point in the community, and houses a non-profit for multidisciplinary performing and visual arts. 434 South Main St., Madison 706-342-4743 Heritage Hall Located in the heart of downtown Madison, Georgia, Heritage Hall opens its doors to welcome guests daily. The home is maintained by the Morgan County Historical Society and is known for its architectural and historical significance. 277 South Main St., Madison 706-342-9627 Rogers House/Rose Cottage Tours are available to view historic Rose Cottage, a home built in 1891 by Adeline Rose, who was born into slavery. Adeline worked in town washing and ironing for 50 cents a load, servicing mainly the boarders at Hardy House, an establishment once owned by the mother of famous comedian Oliver Hardy. Next door, the Rogers House is a fine example of Piedmont Plain-style architecture. This historic house was designed as a two-over-two style (two rooms over two rooms) with the back shed portion most likely added around 1820. Dupree Track and Field Complex With a full-size football field and a state-ofthe-art 400-meter track with eight lanes, this complex is perfect for walking, jogging or running. faith& worship Many churches in Morgan County and nearby areas have withstood the test of time, lending regal beauty, grace, and strength to our communities. The historical aspects of many of these churches provide richness and depth to our spiritual communities, while the diversity and welcoming ambience draw those of all appellations and beliefs.

closer to God There are more than 30 churches and houses of worship in Morgan County, representing a wide array of denominations: AME/AME Zion, Baptist, Episcopal, Holiness, Latter-day Saints, Pentecostal, Presbyterian, Roman Catholic, Seventh Day Adventist, and United Methodist. Non-denominational options are also available, and Orthodox Christian, Jewish, Islamic and Buddhist congregations meet in Athens, about 30 miles away. Hindu congregations can be found in metro Atlanta, just over an hour’s drive from Madison. The earliest churches in the county however, were Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian and Episcopalian, all in place before the Civil War. History tells us that a communion service was stolen from the Presbyterian Church in Madison by Union soldiers during Sherman’s Army’s infamous March to the Sea, but Maj. Gen. Henry Slocum ordered it returned. Likewise, the residents of Morgan County also value their faith as an inherent and important element of life.
