Location : Isola San Secondo, Venice (IT) Site : A wasteland next the «Via della Liberta» bridge Program : «How confront people with the problem of rising water ?» We choose to develop a way to bring people to the «wasteland time» and let them understand that life isn’t a race, because if we choose to run all the time, we will lose the essentiel... our land. How ? People will have to «deconnect» to enter in the «wasteland time» and for that we created a «deconnection box» where you iwill loose all your referenciel, your sense before seeing the island, that you won’t touch, just overfly.

Location : Curreghem, Brussels (BE) Site : In the actual site of the meat market place and slaughterouses, in the intention of a future renovation (the entire site will become a market, offices, lodgments, parkings, etc. + the new slaugtherhouse) Program : a slaugtherhouse (cattle, sheep, pigs, horses, with different processus in function of the religion and a particular attention to the higienic part), with fridges, skins treatment rooms and cutting rooms, with a connection to the metro station and the old fashioned halls, a museum and shops to sell the meat or derivated products. Two kind of circulations : the staff (trucks and people) and the visitors (for the market/museum and from the metro station : how to treat the way in front of a slaugtherhouse?)

Dessine-moi une île… Je la dessinerais à partir de ce qui bouge. Je commencerais par dessiner la rive où se trouve l’infini, où tout fluctue. L’intérieur de cette île serait surtout un apport de l’extérieur. Le travail serait surtout un travail de protection de ces choses qui viennent. J’accepterais sa possible immersion, sa possible disparition. Je la verrais plus comme de l’écume, une fragilité et comme l’idée que tout est un voyage. Cette île pourrait bouger, aller ailleurs. Cette île, ce serait un lieu d’accueil, un peu comme un béguinage, un lieu sacré de

Quand je pense à une île, je pense d’abord à des îles très concrètes qui m’ont marqué et que j’ai aimé: une île immense, Cuba, et des îles très petites, les îles éoliennes. La première, qui n’est presque plus une île, sauf quand on se cogne à ses bords, et puis l’infiniment petit qui sont ces îles tout à fait magnifiques mais qui sont tout à fait dépendantes de leurs rapports à la terre ferme. Ca dégageait à la fois un esprit insulaire et cette dépendance tout à fait singulière. C’est ce

recueillement. Je crois que ce serait d’abord ça mon travail: d’être à l’écoute de ce qui vient là et de tout mettre en œuvre pour que ces choses puissent exister. Je crois qu’une île c’est ce qui reste là quand tout le reste a bougé. Je me dis que, dans ces îles en question, la chose qui semble la plus importante pour toutes ces personnes, c’est préserver une mémoire, une identité de savoir. Ce serait certainement pour moi une forêt qui retrouverait des racines très profondément ancrées. Je la dessinerais avec de l’encre qui peut se diluer et peut-être de l’eau de mer.

COUP DE COEUR ! paradoxe que je trouvais intéressant. Je pense aussi à l’île de Robinson Crusoé, l’île sur laquelle on échoue. Il y a alors un apprivoisement contraint, se construit un univers, il atteint une certaine autre forme d’humanité qu’il n’aurait pas connu s’il était resté sur la terre ferme. L’île pour moi c’est cette histoire là un peu magique qui donne à découvrir l’altérité. Par rapport à Venise, ce qui m’avait frappé c’est Burano, cette île d’une île elle avait quelque chose d’encore plus isolé, plus singulier. Et il y avait une église Byzantinne qui venait nous raconter autre
chose, ça venait figurer tous les liens qui existaient entre Venise et l’Orient, tout ce monde au croisement de l’Occident et de l’Orient. L’île est à la fois un espace fermé et singulier et puis c’est toujours aussi un espace de transition vers autre chose, vers un infini, un imaginaire. Pour moi c’est ça une île, la complexité entre quelque chose de fermé et quelque chose qui est un point sur un flux, un point sur un chemin.
