COMMUNITY & CULTURAL INTEGRATION

Incorporating local communities in the design process is essential for creating authentic and culturally respectful spaces that support heritage and meet community needs. This approach fosters a sense of belonging while balancing traditional elements with innovative technologies. By considering local culture, materials, and sustainable practices, designers can enhance social connections and well-being in the community.

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN PRACTICES

Sustainable interior design focuses on reducing pollutants, improving air quality, and promoting ethical sourcing of materials to protect both health and the environment. It aims to minimize environmental impact through water and energy efficiency, supporting long-term ecological balance. Ultimately, sustainable design seeks to reduce climate change effects and improve the quality of life for inhabitants and surrounding communities.

ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS

Education plays a crucial role in biodiversity conservation, helping to raise awareness and foster appreciation for the environment, especially within indigenous communities. By engaging individuals through interactive programs and activities, environmental education builds understanding and empowers communities to take action. This connection to nature is essential for addressing climate change and ensuring the future of biodiversity.

BIOPHILIA & BIOMIMICRY

Biophilia emphasizes the human connection to nature, offering benefits like reduced stress, improved memory, and enhanced creativity. Biomimicry takes this further by studying natural forms and processes to inspire sustainable and efficient design solutions. By mimicking nature’s strategies, we can create buildings that are more environmentally compatible and resource-efficient.

WELLNESS & COMFORT

The hospitality industry is shifting towards a focus on wellness, with guests increasingly seeking experiences that enhance their overall well-being rather than just luxury or amenities. Wellness in design includes features like fitness opportunities, nutritious food, and biophilic elements that promote relaxation and rejuvenation. This holistic approach to guest experiences fosters deeper connections with the environment and improves overall satisfaction.

INDOOR-OUTDOOR CONNECTION

Creating a strong indoor-outdoor connection enhances the relationship between interior spaces and the surrounding environment, promoting physical and mental well-being. Methods like wide openings, similar finishes, and natural light help blend the spaces seamlessly, increasing natural ventilation and light. This connection fosters a deeper sense of immersion and enriches the overall experience. 1 2 3 4 5 6 DESIGN

FUTURE CAST WELLNESSCROSSES CLINIC

The goal of this brief two week project was to work in groups of four to complete a futuristic ambulatory care clinic. This cuttingedge healthcare clinic is projected to be five years into the future and identify an undeserved population that would significantly benefit from preventative care services. The location for our clinic is Las Cruces, New Mexico to cater to the large Native American and immigrant populations. Overall, the clinic should create a healing sanctuary in which every aspect contributes to wellness and embraces the evolving landscape of healthcare.

DESIGN CONCEPT

The design of Crosses Clinic, a cutting-edge ambulatory clinic in Las Cruces, New Mexico will be driven by the concept of concinnity, representing the harmonious relationship between the mind, body, and spirit. A strong mind-body-spirit connection can positively affect one’s health and wellness - an important notion in the design of the clinic. New Mexico’s native yellow water lily physically represents concinnity since it embodies the ideas of unity and balance. The ambulatory clinic will combine futuristic medicine and functional holistic methods to provide physical and emotional well-being to patients, their families, and healthcare staff.

KUPANDA: GAME ON

This project won first place in the 2023 Student Charrette Competition, which is held annually in January by the Florida State Interior Architecture and Design program. Students are randomly grouped together, with groups consisting of at least one student from each of the fourth, third, and second year cohorts. Students use their varying skill levels to creatively approach the unique design prompts every year. The charrette presented here is a re-imagined nostalgic childhood game that has been scaled up to stadium or arena level viewership.

DESIGN CONCEPT

The game of Kupanda is filled with heights, thrills, close calls, and undeniable family fun. This strategic game is the adaption of the beloved childhood game that involves stacking blocks, steady hands, and patience; Jenga! The game has been modified into an intense sport in which contestants scale a mountainous tower and put their skills to the test. Contestants have three rounds to conquer to win the gold at the top of wooden tower. The specialty-made floating stadium seating ensures that spectators won’t miss a thing as contestants work their way up.

SPECIALTY BLOCKS

Special blocks are randomly placed throughout the tower, when players reach one, it will either boost them ahead or temporarily put them behind.

PAUSE FOR 15 SECONDS EARTHQUAKE!

MILESTONE MARKERS

Colored blocks specify the distance from the ground and keep climbers aware of their progress.

CLIMBING GRIPS

Each block is lined with climbing grips for support.

STADIUM SEATING

The stadium seating rises and circles the tower, making sure that the audience stays with the contestants every step of the way.

PAN-BAND

All contestants will receive a panband. During their turn, each player will be prompted with two screens; one will show the other players’ locations on the tower, and the other will allow for the player to choose a block to be removed. Players will only have 15 seconds, or a block will be randomly selected for them.

GAME RULES

Contestants will be harnessed and tasked to climb the tower before their competitors.

Every minute players will use their panband to select block(s) to be removed from the tower.

Claim victory by being the first to scale the tower and call out ‘KUPANDA!’

But be careful! Make the tower fall and you lose!

MASCOT: LESLIE BLOCK HARNESSES

All contestants are harnessed to ensure that if a player falls, the harness will lead them down safely so they can restart their climb.

FUN FACTS!

The childhood game of Jenga originated in East Africa by Leslie Scott, who is represented by the mascot Leslie Block. The name Jenga originated from the Swahili phrase ‘Kujanga’ which means “to build”. In respect to Jenga’s heritage, this competition has been named ‘Kupanda’, the Swahili term for “to climb.”

FURNITURE DESIGN

In furniture design class, the work is all about turning creative ideas into functional, well-crafted pieces while being mindful of space and materials. I start by sketching out concepts, carefully considering the space I have to work with and the specific parameters of the project. One key focus is maximizing the use of available space and avoiding waste—whether it’s ensuring every inch of a material is used effectively or designing pieces that fit perfectly within the given dimensions. As I move on to fabrication, I work with a variety of materials, including wood, acrylic, and other experimental materials, testing different properties to find the best fit for my designs. I apply woodworking, sanding, staining, and other techniques to bring my ideas to life, all while striving for efficiency and sustainability. Throughout the process, I balance aesthetics with functionality, making sure my furniture is not only visually appealing but also practical and resource-conscious.

FINAL PRODUCTS

For this project, all items were designed and fabricated from a single 2’ x 4’ sheet of birch plywood. The project included a table, two plant holders, and two Christmas trees. Each piece was carefully crafted to maximize the use of the plywood, with the table featuring clean lines and a simple, sturdy structure. Each piece of the project utilized lap joints to create strong, precise connections and ensure durable, seamless assemblies. The plant holders were designed to be functional yet aesthetically pleasing, while the Christmas trees added a festive touch with their shapes. After cutting and assembling the pieces, each item was sanded smooth and stained to enhance the wood’s natural beauty and give them a polished, finished look.
