The inspirational St Kilda midfielder and fellow AFL hard-nut Melbourne co-captain Nathan Jones have signed on as ambassadors to a unique program that aims to make the peninsula’s junior league a showpiece for fair play and sportsmanship. If the Keep Your Cool program succeeds in eliminating aggressive behaviour on both sides of the fence, the AFL wants to roll out the scheme nationally. The program was developed by peninsula parents concerned about the level of aggression and hostility creeping

Reef raiders: Fisheries officers measure and count abalone seized after being allegedly harvested by five men on reefs off Mt Eliza and Mornington.

Cars seized over abalone catches CARS and equipment were seized over the Labour Day long weekend when Fisheries Victoria officers swooped on men with illegal catches of abalone taken from reefs off Mt Eliza and Mornington. At Mt Eliza, two men were arrested and charged with having 200 abalone, 148 below legal size, and an undersized snapper. Three were apprehended at Mornington for taking 222 abalone. During the weekend, fisheries officers issued 20 infringement notices on the Mornington Peninsula for offences that included exceeding catch limits, taking shellfish from intertidal zones, and taking undersize fish. Senior fisheries officer Rod Barber said a minority of fishers continue to flout restrictions. “Illegal fishers continue to run the gauntlet, risking jail sentences, forfeiture of expensive cars, boats and fishing equipment, very heavy fines and penalties,” he said.

Three Endeavour Hills men aged 30, 23 and 17 were arrested after allegedly being found with 222 abalone, including 98 undersized, taken from reefs off Mornington. Mr Barber said the three were interviewed at Mornington police station and will be charged on summons with offences relating to the taking of a commercial quantity of abalone, exceeding the catch limit and taking undersized abalone. It will be alleged the men left two bags containing abalone in bushes to be picked up later. In a second incident, two men, a 29-year-old of Lynbrook and a 25-year-old of Cranbourne, were arrested after allegedly taking 200 abalone (including 148 undersized) and one undersized snapper from reefs off Mt Eliza. THOUSANDS of Australians took to the streets on the weekend to protest against a range of Abbott government policies. In the case of peninsula residents, about 100 took to the sand of Safety Beach on a blustery Sunday morning for a rally organised just days before. “March in March” protesters voiced anger over the government’s inaction on climate change, the treatment of asylum seekers, marriage equality, the tax system, and media ownership. March in March organisers said many of the Abbott government’s policies were “against the common good of our nation”. “We have no confidence in policies that go against common principles of humanity, decency, fairness, social justice and equity, democratic governance, responsible global citizenship and conserving our natural heritage.” The “movement” started late last year on social media with the idea of marching on Parliament House but grew into a nationwide protest.

Club swells peninsula’s surfing history PENINSULA Surfriders Club is planning a “spectacular event” to celebrate its 40th anniversary later this month. Secretary Jane Featherston said the club had cultivated a “rich history of surfing life throughout the Mornington Peninsula”. Peninsula “surfing pioneers” Ted Bainbridge, John Wilson, Skip Easton, Mick Pearce and Michael Schaeffer had officially started the club at a committee meeting held behind a surf shop in Frankston. “At the time, in the early 1970s, there was a growing group of surfers on the peninsula who were becoming a force to be reckoned with in Victorian surfing,” she said. This “force” from the peninsula started in 1972 when Mick Parkinson of Blairgowrie won the Victorian junior title. He was followed the following year by Ian Portingale – and Carol Watts won the women’s title. “In 1974 we had Ian first and Phil Trigger second in the Victorian open men’s event, which was a huge effort,” Ms Featherston said. “Carol won the women’s again. Rob Licciardo won the juniors in 1975 and Warren Partington the senior men’s title.” Ms Featherston said the club’s strength was proved again in 1976 when Portingale and Phil Trigger “did a one-two again in the open men’s” and its juniors took out the first three places at state titles: Kelly Pritchard, 1; Gary Burns, 2; and Ian Cochrane, 3. The same year Alan “Wally” Tibballs won the Easter Bells trials event. Mick Pierce won in 1977 and Ian Cochrane won the juniors that year with Phil Coates in 1978 and ’79. In 1986, Garry Taylor won the Easter Bells trials event. “Before PSC started there were no regular peninsula surfers who attained such high positions in Victorian contests. There were plenty from northern bayside suburbs, but they

all surfed the Torquay area,” Ms Featherston said. “Now, 40 years later, after thousands of memberships, PSC has grown and evolved to be one of the most respected and successful surfriding clubs in Australia. “Friendships and families have been built on mutual lifetimes spent in the waves around the

Farm gate guide aims to deliver food security By Chris Brennan MORNINGTON Peninsula Shire has launched a farm gate guide showing easily accessible sources of cheap and fresh produce to help combat growing food insecurity in the community. The initiative comes in response to rising concern among social service providers and health professionals that an increasing number of families are being forced to go without basic necessities including fresh food. The shire is in the process of producing a food security booklet, action plan and strategy to better connect disadvantaged people to local produce. While the Mornington Peninsula is well known for quality fresh produce, a Victorian Population Health Survey found 8.7 per cent of shire residents experience food insecurity, compared to a state average of 5.6 per cent. A number of social service providers on the peninsula have begun offering free fruit and vegetables to families in need while several “soup kitchens” providing free meals have sprung up. Lisa Gray of the shire’s health and wellbeing team said the farm gate guide aimed to connect residents with local producers, community gardens and food security programs. She said food security existed when “all people at all times have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs as well as food preferences for an active and healthy life”.

“People who live with food insecurity are those who are restricted to easy access to affordable, healthy food and sometimes go without any food at all,” she said. “The reasons behind this vary, but may include a lack of transport, high density of fast food restaurants, low density of fresh food producers, and poor education about healthy food.” The mayor, Cr Antonella Celi, said access to “fresh, local, affordable food is essential to good health”. “Food insecurity is an issue than can affect a range of people, for many reasons, and the shire is committed to working toward connecting local people to local food,” she said. “Ensuring access to a range of healthy, local food resources can have

great positive impacts on health and wellbeing, and focusing on buying from local producers helps the positive growth of the local economy.” Cr Celi said the shire would continue to work with farmers, community groups, welfare organisations and community gardeners to ensure all residents could access fresh, healthy and affordable food all year round. Padua swimmers swamp opponents for 25th title THERE must be something in the water at Padua College’s three campuses that makes sporting champions. In the case of Padua winning another Southern Independent Schools Interschool Swimming Championships, it’s the students in the water. The swimming team, supported by the entire school community from campuses at Mornington, Rosebud and the new one at Tyabb, dared to dream of 25 wins in a row last week and achieved what could be an Australian record. Led by veteran swimming coach Colin “Shuggy” Shugg, Padua scored 828 points to top the overall aggregate at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, easily accounting for second placegetter Woodleigh on 592 points with Flinders Christian Community College third on 581. The college won in 1988, lost the next year and has now won for the past 25 years. Padua won all three aggregate age shields (junior, intermediate and senior) as well as aggregate girls and boys shields – a clean sweep. Principal Christopher Houlihan said Colin Shugg had led the team to all 25 victories, and congratulations were due to all swimmers, the coach, “our sports staff and all the families who helped get students to training and camp”. “Colin once again dedicated many hours to train and prepare the team, and deserves the credit for this formidable run of victories,” he said. Di Paolo said the college had held a swimming camp at Lake Hume a week before the championships for more than 20 years. “We have more than 60 students from years 7-11. It fosters great team camaraderie and may be a key ingredient to our ongoing success.” Mr Di Paolo said Colin Shugg’s children attended the college and

were members of the swimming team. “Shuggy stayed on after his children finished school and is another key factor in our success. He’s also a pretty good open water swimmer.” Swimming team members train two mornings a week at early morning pool sessions. The squad swimmers train up to five times each week. Mr Di Paolo said Padua swimmers

from the early years were now in their late 40s. “They check the Padua Facebook page to see if their records have been broken!” At the championships last Tuesday, Matthew Faoro (under-14 50-metres breaststroke) and Jessica Faoro (under-17 100-metres freestyle) set new records. (Faoro means “to make gold” in Italian.)

No right way onto ‘dangerous’ road NO action is expected to be taken to address a “dangerous” Mornington intersection, despite ongoing protests by residents. A petition with 121 signatures was recently delivered to the shire council expressing concern about the intersection of Park Hill Drive and Mornington-Tyabb Rd. Residents say it is dangerous for vehicles to turn right out of Park Hill Drive onto Mornington-Tyabb Rd and have requested a “No Right Turn” sign be installed. However a report presented by the shire’s traffic and road safety department at last month’s council meeting said there was “no justification for making any modifications to the intersection”. The report stated: “The intersection of the service road and MorningtonTyabb Rd (at about 160 MorningtonTyabb Rd) in Mornington is managed by VicRoads. “Notwithstanding, the concerns raised by the village manager at The Village, 150 Mornington-Tyabb Rd, Mornington, with respect to the intersection, have been considered and assessed by the shire’s traffic and road safety team. “While the traffic and road safety team recognises that it may be difficult to identify a suitable gap and make a right turn from the service road onto Mornington-Tyabb Rd at peak traffic times, there is currently no justification for making any modifications to this intersection or for providing an alternative or additional access to the

service road. Local drivers who have concerns and/or recognise the difficulty in turning right at peak times, and do not want to wait to find a suitable gap, should modify their travel accordingly.” Nicola Belcher of the shire’s traffic and road safety team said in the report drivers should instead turn left at the intersection and then make a U-turn at the roundabout at Dunns Rd, about 900 metres to the west or find an alternative route to avoid making the right turn. “Although the intersection may be considered complex at peak times, there are currently no injury-related crashes recorded at this intersection. “As such, there is no crash history to indicate that turning right from the service road into Mornington-Tyabb Rd is a higher risk than in other similar locations.” The condition of the intersection, the sight distance and the visibility at the intersection were all considered appropriate for the current speed limit on Mornington-Tyabb Rd of 70km/h. “While the current speed limit on Mornington-Tyabb Rd is 70km/h, at peak times the travel speed is often lower than this due to the volume of traffic on the road.” However, the report noted the speed limit on Mornington-Tyabb Rd could be reviewed by VicRoads in the future “as an outcome of the recent changes to VicRoads’ speed limit guidelines”. DRIVERS with outstanding fines have no place to hide – authorities now know where they will be. Hi-tech equipment is being used to track down serial fine evaders. Police and sheriff officers set up a roadblock on Rutherford Rd onramp at EastLink tollway in Carrum Downs on a Wednesday morning earlier this month in the expectation of nabbing some big fish. The operation paid off. A driver was caught with 445 outstanding warrants totalling just under $125,000. His four-wheel drive was impounded and towed away. Baxter Boxster burnout turns into costly affair By Chris Brennan A PORSCHE-driving hoon narrowly escaped a bill of almost $15,000 when police impounded a high-performance hire car after catching the driver doing burnouts in Baxter on Monday last week. The 30-year-old Queensland man was on holiday in Melbourne with his partner and had hired the late-model black Porsche Boxster 987 at a weekend rate of $1000 a day to explore the Mornington Peninsula. Frankston highway police spotted the Porsche spinning its wheels on Moorooduc Highway, near Sages Rd, just after 10am. They intercepted the driver and were set to impound the vehicle for 30 days under anti-hoon legislation.

Melbourne’s Sports Car Rentals hires the $100,000-plus Porsche at $495 a day and the Queensland driver would likely have had to pay the rate in full over the 30-day seizure period. Police said the driver was expected to be charged on summons with a range of offences, including driving in a manner dangerous, careless driving, improper use of a motor vehicle, and excessive speed. Not so lucky was a 20-year-old man whose Holden ute was impounded after exceeding the speed limit by more than 30km/h in Tooradin last Friday week. The ute was impounded and the driver found to be driving while disqualified and driving a prohibited vehicle. The Tooradin man is expected to be charged on summons. Another driver was clocked travelling at more than double the speed limit in Seaford last Monday in an unsafe and unregistered vehicle. Police were parked on Seaford Rd about 9pm when they detected the Holden station wagon travelling in excess of 135km/h in a 60 zone. Police discovered the car had an under-inflated tyre and three wheels had several wheel nuts missing. The 41-year-old Frankston North driver had his car impounded for 30 days and faces charges of driving at a dangerous speed, using an unsafe vehicle and driving an unregistered vehicle.

Bandicoot corridor plan axed By Mike Hast THE state government has removed habitat corridors from its plans to protect the iconic southern brown bandicoot in the southeast. Conservationists were told about the backflip two weeks ago at a meeting with Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) officers. It is understood a proposal to create two habitat corridors, or biolinks, centred on the Royal Botanic Gardens at Cranbourne has been dumped from the final version of the Sub-Regional Species Strategy for the Southern Brown Bandicoot, issued as a draft for public comment in late 2011. One biolink was meant to run from the botanic gardens south to Western Port’s Quail Island, where there is a viable population of more than 1000 bandicoots after fox and cat removal in recent years. The second was to connect the botanic gardens with Koo Wee Rup swamp and surrounds, where “tens of thousands of bandicoots live near drains, waterways, railway line reserves and on private properties”, according to peninsula wildlife expert Mal Legg. The government’s move has disappointed the Southern Brown Bandicoot Regional Recovery Group and other conservationists in the region, and led to speculation that housing estate developers have put pressure on the government. It also inspired the creation last week of an online petition addressed to federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt, who receives an email from every per-

son who signs. The petition was created by Friends of the Southern Brown Bandicoot member Sarah Maclagan, an environmental sciences PhD student at Deakin University. Ms Maclagan has been studying the region’s bandicoots for several years and is co-chair of the bandicoot recovery group along with veteran scientist David Nicholls. The petition – “Don’t strand the bandicoot; put the corridors back!” – states that the recent expansion of Melbourne’s Urban Growth Boundary (UGB) “threatens to surround the crucial southern brown bandicoot population at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Cranbourne and cut connectivity with other populations nearby”. Ms Maclagan said the government’s strategy was meant to protect sustainable bandicoot populations “within and adjacent to growth areas, with connectivity between populations” as well as “protect and enhance all populations, including at Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne”. “We’re very disappointed corridors have been removed from the final document,” she told The News. “Without corridors, connectivity between bandicoot sub-populations will be severed by an impenetrable barrier of urban development. “The chance of local extinctions of this endangered native mammal become much higher.” She said the petition to Mr Hunt was “our one and only opportunity to provide corridors. the UGB triggered the federal Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act, Ms Maclagan said. “Mr Hunt has to sign off on the state government changes and that’s why we are asking him to force the government to reinstate habitat corridors”, including those planned for the Botanic Ridge subdivision near the Cranbourne botanic gardens. Ms Maclagan said DEPI officers questioned the use of biolinks “but we have evidence they do work”. It was disappointing DEPI was fo-

cused on so-called “managed translocations” – capturing animals and moving them to other locations, she said. “For example, the translocation of the threatened eastern barred bandicoot to French Island was a total failure,” she said. “All that bandicoots need to survive and thrive is viable habitat protected from dogs, foxes and other predators.” She said bandicoot were prolific breeders. “The young spend just 12 days gestating and are self-sufficient after two months. Females have be-

tween two and five babies in each litter.” Ms Maclagan questioned the state government’s habitat protection fee. “The 2011 document stated developers would be charged $6000 to $8000 per hectare to fund the bandicoot protection strategy. By Mike Hast FRANKSTON forensic zoologist Hans Brunner says the state government dumping plans for habitat corridors for the southern brown bandicoot means predator-proof fences should be built around Pines Flora and Fauna Reserve in Frankston North. The fences were part of Linking Melbourne Authority gaining state government permission for Peninsula Link to bisect the reserve. They were removed from freeway plans by the Department of Sustainability and Environment (now Department of Environment and Primary Industries or DEPI) in 2012. Mr Brunner has consistently said that as long as dog walking was permitted in the reserve and predator-proof fences were not erected “all is lost for the bandicoots”. In 2012, DSE/DEPI said no evidence of bandicoots in the reserve had been seen since summer

2009-10 but Mr Brunner said two bandicoots were spotted late last year. “The bandicoots are now entirely dependent on intense fox control, which I believe is extremely difficult in the presence of pet and farm dogs, where poisoning cannot be used,” he said. “Where traps have to be set to avoid dogs, they will also avoid foxes.” Mr Brunner said the government’s consultant had recommended a network of corridors in the 2011 draft that was “clearly open for harsh criticism and demanded a proper review” but “scrapping corridors all together has gone too far”. “This scenario has rekindled the now more desperate need for a predator-proof fence around Pines Reserve where bandicoots can be properly protected as they are at the botanical gardens at Cranbourne,” he said. Mr Brunner said the Peninsula Link builder had spent $20 million on revegetation and underpasses

in Pines Reserve – four culverts and a two-span bridge – specifically designed for bandicoots. Two drainage structures were also designed to allow crossing by wildlife. “Southern Way allocated $1.6 million to erect and maintain fences in Pines Reserve to protect bandicoots and other native animals,” he said. “The irony is the state government agency Parks Victoria wants that money for the protection of bandicoots in the very area where they abandoned the corridors in order to make room for urban development. “To make the bandicoots absolutely secure must be the ultimate priority. The former DSE allowed eastern barred bandicoot numbers drop to only 40 animals before panic set in. Extinction was so close. “Now they are gambling with the southern brown bandicoot.”

Sporting chance for elite athletes YOUNG Mornington Peninsula athletes and sport teams are invited to apply for grants of up to $3000 to help cover the cost of competing in elite-level events. The Local Sporting Champions grants program is designed to provide support for young people to participate in state, national and international sporting championships. The federal government grants program, also open to coaches and officials, provides funding toward the cost of travel, accommodation, equipment and uniforms. Grants of $500 are available for individuals and $3000 for teams. Flinders MP Greg Hunt said the costs associated with competing at elite sporting events could be significant and the grants aimed to ease the financial burden and make it easier for young athletes to go further in their chosen sports. Applicants must be between 12 and 18 in the year of the competition. This funding round close June 30 and forms be received before the competition start date. FRANK Peniguel is out to set a record by travelling around Victoria playing bowls. The 70-year-old, left, has given himself a year to play 600-900 games on different greens to join the holders of Guinness World Records. Last week he was in Frankston and on the Mornington Peninsula – Rosebud and Dromana on Tuesday, Mt Martha and Mornington on Wednesday, and Frankston South (Yamala Park) and Frankston on Thursday. Peniguel joined Elsternwick Bowls Club in 2005 and left his Daylesford home in his Kombi van on 9 January to set a world record. He will play 10 ends against one bowler from each of the clubs he visits. Gallery’s cash crisis By Mike Hast THE McClelland Gallery faces a funding crisis following the end of a $400,000 annual grant from its major patron Dame Elisabeth Murdoch. Dame Elisabeth’s support ended when she died 14 months ago but the shortfall has only just been revealed by the gallery’s management committee. The grant was about 40 per cent of the gallery’s annual operational costs of $1 million. McClelland has sufficient reserves for the short term but will face a major funding crisis in the next two years and is seeking alternative sources of funds. Director Robert Lindsay told The News that McClelland, known formally as the McClelland Sculpture Park and Gallery, was entering the third phase of its life. “Phase one was when the gallery was established by the McClelland family in 1971, then we had the generous support of Dame Elisabeth, and now we are entering stage three where we are seeking support from the community and government,” he said. The sculpture park and gallery had been developed into a major cultural institution with a growing international profile, he said. Mr Lindsay said Dame Elisabeth had been a member of McClelland’s arts advisory council since the beginning. The Elisabeth Murdoch Sculpture Foundation was established in 1989 to buy works for McClelland, and Dame Elisabeth was the driving force behind the annual $100,000 McClelland Award for sculptors. Throwing its support behind McClelland is the new citizen lobby group Frankston Community Coalition, formed to get a better deal for Frankston from the two major political parties in the run-up to the state election at the end of November. Displaying 112 sculptures in an Australian bush landscape setting, McClelland is a unique and much-loved community and artistic asset visited by up to 150,000 visitors a year who pay no entry fee. “It is the second-most popular gallery outside Melbourne and one of Frankston’s most-visited tourist venues.” Ms Richards said McClelland’s five staff presented educational, community and public programs that combined art with nature, and the gallery hosted four active arts and craft groups. “The elegant gallery and well-managed surrounds provide a strong contradiction to those who run down the image of Frankston,” she said. “Like many galleries, McClelland receives some state government funding through Arts Victoria, but the funding underrates its popularity.” She said McClelland Gallery received $110,000 from Arts Victoria in 2012 when 128,000 people visited the gallery. “Heide Museum of Modern Art in Bulleen received $1.42 million and had 75,000 visitors.” Sculpture was an important part of arts culture and deserved more recognition, she said. Monarch bumped at berth THERE was slight inconvenience awaiting her majesty’s arrival in Melbourne last Wednesday when it was discovered her normal place to stay was pre-booked. The majesty in question was the cruise ship Queen Mary 2, which found itself unceremoniously bumped for a berth at Station Pier by Celebrity Solstice. Although the 345-metre Queen Mary 2 is the largest cruise ship to use Australian waters, the Port of Melbourne Corporation said it would honour the earlier booking by Celebrity Solstice (115 metres), moving the monarch to the more industrial Webb Dock. Both cruise ships came and went on the same day, moving south past bayside beaches toward The Heads at sunset. The second visit of the Queen Mary 2 this year is part of a record cruise ship season ending in May bringing about 200,000 passengers and crew to Melbourne. “It’s important to give certainty to the cruise lines using Station Pier that we will honour their booking,” port chief executive Nick Easy said. “We appreciate it is a highly unusual circumstance but Webb Dock is the only alternative berth available given the requirement to accommodate a 345-metre vessel.” Mr Easy said it was worth making the extra effort for Queen Mary 2. “Working collaboratively with Cunard and Patrick Ports and Stevedoring, which will play a key role on the day, the port corporation continues to ensure Melbourne benefits from the vibrant cruise tourism sector estimated to generate about $1 million to the Victorian economy for each cruise ship visit,” he said. EPA order on wine effluent THE Environment Protection Authority ordered Massoni Wines in Dromana’s industrial estate to repair and service its wastewater treatment plant after dark red effluent was allegedly released several times into a stormwater drain that runs into Sheepwash Creek. The order followed complaints from residents mid-February that a factory in Brasser Ave was discharging a substance. A spokesperson for the EPA said the wine company had completed maintenance on its plant in early March. Monitoring put in place would prevent further discharges. The factory’s treatment plant discharge diversion valve was found to be defective and had allowed water used during wine production to escape into the stormwater system. Massoni Wines winemaker Phillip Kettle told The News he would not disclose the company’s dealings with the EPA. “Look, we’re in the middle of pressing and all I want to say is that we comply with all government regulations,” he said. The alleged discharges occurred at least twice during February when the flow of the creek was very low after several weeks of dry conditions. The discharge occurred less than 2 kilometres from the mouth of the creek where it runs into Port Phillip at Safety Beach. It entered the creek via a stormwater drain near the corner of Collins Rd and Mornington Peninsula Freeway’s bridge over Nepean Highway. One of the complainants, who did not want to be named, said it appeared a large volume of red wine-coloured waste had ended up in the creek. “At this time of year when flow rates are low, the waste stayed in the creek, causing an intense smell and probably damaging any aquatic life. “This is at least the third such discharge in the past 6 months.” Mike Hast

Sowersby has won the People’s Choice award three times – in 1998, 2004 and 2005 with The

Cardinal with his Abbott, a portrait of Cardinal George Pell and now Prime Minister Tony Abbott. The Bald Archy Prize was created in 1994 and attracts artists of all standards and styles. It encourages portraits ranging from hilarious to vulgar. Winning subjects have included Kerry Packer, Amanda Vanstone, Edmund Capon, Shane Warne, Dame Edna Everage, John Howard and Pauline Hanson, Robbie and Gai Waterhouse, Rupert Murdoch, Jeff Kennett, and Ian Thorpe. The comic portraits are shown in Canberra before being taken on tour in eastern Australia. An art critic wrote last year: “The satirical side of this event has its basis in the irreverent, larrikin Australian comic comment, with great appeal to people from all walks of life, the reason why the exhibition of finalists keeps breaking attendance records wherever it is shown.” Mike Hast

Grover (president of the Shire) presided, and spoke in glowing terms of their honoured guest, who was leaving Mornington to go into business with his brother, Mr Adam McLellan, M.L.A., of Melbourne. A very enjoyable social was also tendered to Cr Lloyd to celebrate his return for the third time as the representative of this district in the Cranbourne shire council. The cooking section goes from plain scones to cup cakes, boiled fruit cake to gluten free biscuits, and sausage rolls to chocolate crackles. There is a gourmet dip championship, a noncommercial cheese section, homemade wine and jams, preserves and beverages. Craft sections include knitting, crochet, sewing, patchwork, appliqué and quilts, embroidery, dolls and toys, spun wool, alpaca handcraft, woodwork, cut and jewelled eggs and unspecified craft. The flower, fruit and vegetable sections give entrants the chance to present what they have cultivated. Photography includes landscape to pets and animals, abstract to sport/action. Poultry ranges from silkies to Indian runners and bantams to Rhode Island reds. The woodchop also comes with sections. Even the fancy rat show has different classes. Entries in the dog high scramble will be accepted at the secretary’s area on the day of the show. This event will be held in the afternoon after The News Group Grand Parade, which

Mistaken for The National’s Matt Berninger By Stuart McCullough ART-ROCK ensemble R.E.M. once opined: “That’s me in the corner.” When it comes to attending live music events, not only am I invariably in the corner, but way up the back, wedged against a vending machine and stuck behind someone who’s much taller. Live music is a wonderful thing, but sometimes the idea of seeing a band live doesn’t quite match the actual experience. That’s because seeing a band is an exercise in faith. You go in the hope that it might be an exhilarating, life-changing experience. Mostly though, it’s a really late night from which it takes you the rest of the week to recover. I was in a band before I really started seeing them. At thirteen, I played synthesiser with some older people. It sounds incredibly cool but, in truth, I was terrified of playing a dud note. Not long after, I was in a band with kids my own age including my younger brother. One of our earliest gigs was supporting a band called The Switch. They were older and American and we were awestruck. To them, we would have looked like we’d just finished work at Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory. Somewhere, I have a tape of that apocryphal performance. It’s just a couple of minutes but, believe me, it’s more than enough. The song in question begins with an atmospheric synthesiser overture before – gulp – a spoken word introduction. It gets worse. Whilst the first part of the song is performed in near darkness, when the band kicks in, the guy at the desk wakes up and we are bathed in light.

matic right of way. The third rule is that, no matter how tall you are, someone taller will stand in front of you. You could be as tall as Chinese basketball giant Yao Ming and drop in to catch a set by your favourite band and still end up with someone obstructing your view. For some reason, I always have a lousy view when I go to see bands. Even if I arrive early and use fluorescent traffic cones to cordon off a space that’s stage centre, I invariably find myself shuffled like a dud card to somewhere down the back of the venue. Although I’m always pressed up against the emergency exit, I have a friend who has an uncanny gift to find her way to the very front no matter how crowded. We once arrived at Festival Hall to find it stuffed like a cocktail olive. Within seconds, she had vanished into the crowd, weaving her way towards the front. My brother and I remained where we were. For some reason, the crowd seemed unwilling to let us pass and resented our attempts to do so. Perhaps they thought we were pushing in. Maybe they had seen the video of us supporting The Switch and wanted to teach us a lesson. Either way, they had a point. There’s a band I like called The National. They play a literate brand of baritone art rock that appeals to me greatly. That the band members are all my age probably helps. It is music for the head, as well as the heart. When they announced they were touring Melbourne, our friend Dr J got tickets. When we arrived at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, I immediately

Had I been in the audience rather than on the stage, I doubt very much that I would have complained about being in the back corner with my view obstructed. I would have been grateful. There are certain rules when it comes to seeing a band. Firstly, wher-

headed for my usual position along the back fence behind the recycling bins. However, it seems Dr J had managed to secure tickets in row ‘N’, right smack-bang in the middle. I could see the stage. I could even see the people on the stage. It was an experience that was so strange, so novel that I barely knew what to do with myself. After two hours of exhilarating music, all of which I saw as well as heard, the concert reached something of a crescendo. It was then that lead singer, Matt Berninger, threw himself into the audience and, with microphone in hand, began making his way through the crowd. As the song went on he drew ever closer until he began to stroll down row ‘N’ in our direction. The people to my left celebrated by groping him, filming the assault on a mobile phone. As he squeezed past me, I applied ‘public toilet rules’ in which I did everything humanly possible to avoid actual physical contact. Matt Berninger, obviously appreciative of my efforts not manhandle him, looked up. Not only were we the same age, but the same height also, both with a beard and glasses, except Matt Berninger looked every inch the rock star and I looked like I’d just been to Bunnings. In a strange way, it was like looking at a novelty mirror. Whether it was glimpse of the road less travelled or just a great night out matters little. I’m just grateful that there are people not unlike me who are making great music. And that I ever got close enough to realise it for myself. stuart@stuartmccullough.com

Doggies dance over Sharks PROVINCIAL

By IT Gully MORNINGTON was in the box seat to turn years’ of disappointment into a year of great achievement in the MPCA Provincial grand final. The Doggies have been the most consistent side in the competition this season and went into the match against Sorrento as favourite. Meanwhile, the Sharks were looking to make amends for their poor showing against Peninsula Old Boys the season before in the big dance. In that match against the Old Boys,

the Sharks were bowled out for 133 chasing 197. History seemed to set to repeat itself on the first day of the 2013/14 grand final, with Sorrento up against it at 8/120 off 56 overs before rain put a stop to the day’s play. The Sharks’ only source of hope could be to draw on last year’s final when they had POB reeling at 8/123 before the Old boy’s Trevor Johnson went on to make 59 to help his side to 197 and victory. On Saturday, the Sharks won the toss and elected to bat.

Despite heavy rain prior to the match at Dromana Reserve, the ground was playing well but was still slippery under foot. Luke Popov and Michael Heib took the new ball for the Dogs and were right on target early. Nick Jewell opened the batting with Jedd Falck and while Falck was scratchy, Jewell belted a short Heib ball to the boundary with a classic pull shot off the first delivery he faced. The Mornington fieldsmen were up and about and their efforts in the field were first class, a number of cracking

Jewell shots stopped without a run being made. Both Popov and Heib were swinging the ball away from the left-handed Falck and into Jewell. Sorrento quickly fell to 2/22 after Popov got rid of Falck and Heib knocked over Liam O’Connor before he could add to the scoreboard. Mornington skipper Matt Foon then rattled the pegs of Jewell with his second delivery of the day, and when Leigh Poholke became Popov’s second victim after a blinding one-handed catch at fine gully, the Sharks were

reeling at 4/30 from just 13 overs. Anthony Blackwell, who averages just eight in finals, needed a big score to get his side back in the contest. He top scored with 26 but that wasn’t enough. Chris King contributed 17. At the end of play, Nick Davern was unbeaten on 23, with AJ King at the other end. AJ’s highest score this season was seven. Davern has already passed his highest score of 16, which happened to be against Mornington in round seven. Popov finished day one with 3/27, while Foon finished with 3/28.

Two flags in three seasons for Pines DISTRICT

By IT Gully A MAGNIFICENT spell of fast bowling from Pines opening quick Brett Remy placed his side in the box seat to win the MPCA District flag. In front of a massive crowd at Mornington’s Alexandra Park, Pines rolled Delacombe Park for just 94 in 52.5 overs on Saturday, before finishing the afternoon themselves on 0/37. The evergreen Remy, who seems to threaten retirement every season, bowled 21 overs against Delacombe Park. Remy finished with the more than tidy figures of 5/33, including 10 maidens. When he took his fifth wicket, his figures were 5/11 from 14 overs. The Parkers were never in the contest, losing wickets at quick intervals.

Jon Gurthrie was rolled for a duck by Nick Wilcox after facing 20 balls and, although Nick Christides’ first two scoring shots found the boundary, he was rolled for 13. After eight overs, Delacombe Park was 2/13. They then struggled to 5/42 from 28 overs. Joel Malcolm scored 13, Chris Brittain seven, Simon Dignan eight and Andrew Christides was out for a duck. Ben Brittain (13) and Shane Deal offered a little bit of resistance in the middle order, taking the score from 6/43 in the 30th over to 6/70 at tea. Brett Chard made a handy 17 at the end, while Varun Singh scored nine, but it wasn’t enough to push the score beyond 100. Chasing just 95 for victory, Pines resumed on day two at 0/37, Remy unbeaten on 21 and Rhys Chalkley on 16 not out.

Third time lucky for Hillmen in final SUB-DISTRICT

By IT Gully AFTER years of heartache, it appears Red Hill has finally kicked the monkey off its back. Going into the grand final against Rosebud as hot favourites, the Hillmen had to put seasons of failed attempts behind them to place themselves in a position to taste the ultimate reward. The Hillmen have lost their past two grand finals against Pines and Seaford Tigers. And despite rain interruptions throughout the day’s play, the Hillmen were able to set-up their win with a sensational opening day of batting. After winning the toss and batting at Pearcedale Reserve, the Hillmen got away to a flier, with openers Andrew Mock and Ken Sullivan putting on 84. Sullivan was the attacking batsman in the opening stand and lost his wicket a short time after Mock (25) for 51. That brought Rheede Hopgood and Simon Dart to the crease together within a short space of time.

Hopgood was the aggressor in that partnership and with Dart, helped take the score from 2/84 to 181 before he was tragically run out for 64. Riley Shaw (six) and Brent Martin (five) didn’t hang around long and at the close of play on Saturday afternoon, the Hillmen were in the box seat at 5/216. With Dart unbeaten on 49 and with Lincoln Toy (two not out) and Andrew Brown and Jamie McCall still to come, the Hillmen are well set up to push 250plus. In anyone’s language, it’s not often a side that scores over 250 in a grand final lose. The Hillmen scored 197 in the grand final last season against Seaford Tigers (7/296), while the year before, the Hillmen were rolled for 99, chasing Pines’ 281. History says Red Hill was in a terrific position on Saturday night. Jason Nagel was the pick of the Rosebud bowlers after the first day with 2/61 from 26 overs. Darren Kerr and Peter Doughty were the other wicket takers.

Clements crowned number 1 for season By IT Gully MORNINGTON run machine Ben Clements was crowned with the Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association’s highest honour last week when he won the W B Wedgewood Medal. Clements (17 votes) polled in seven of the 11 games this season, finishing three votes clear of two allrounders, Long Island’s Scott Phillips and Baxter’s Dale Irving, as well as Sorrento skipper Nick Jewell, who all finished on 14 votes. Crib Point’s Luke Herrington was a further vote back on 13.

Clements scored 1185 runs this season, 806 of them coming in 13 innings in home-and-away matches. This gave him an average of 62 for the season, with a high score of 129 against Mt Eliza in round 3 (he also scored 126 against Heatherhill in round nine). Clements’ lowest score for the season was five against Long Island. He scored 40 in the second innings of that match. Clements also scored plenty of runs in the Jack Peacock Cup, including knocks of 99, 70, 84 and 118. District

In District ranks, Delacombe Park teammates Chris Brittain and Jon Guthrie drove each other to the line in a tight and tense medal count. But the skipper, Brittain, finally nudged out the opening batsman to win the E G Betts Medal. Brittain polled in six games to give him 15 votes while Guthrie was just one vote back after polling in five matches. Seaford star Damien Lawrence was third in the count on 13 votes while Shaun Foster (Carrum) and Corey Hand (Seaford Tigers) both polled 12 votes.

Brittain scored 407 runs this season with a highest score of 104 against Baden Powell in Round nine. His batting average was 36.45. He also snared 39 wickets at an average of 9.10. His best bowling figures were 6/36 against Hastings in Round four. Sub District In the Subbies, Red Hill star Simon Dart was a raging-hot favourite for the Robert Thompson Award and won it with 14 votes. Dart tipped out Dromana’s Danny Timmer and Balnarring’s Mark Walles, who both polled 11 votes.

Rosebud’s Jason Nagel, along with Paul Bradley (YCW), Glenn Collett (Red Hill), Jacob Cook (Balnarring) and Shayne Gillings (Pearcedale) all polled 10 votes. Dart scored 608 runs this season and picked-up 12 wickets. He scored his first century (111) of the season in the final home-and-away game against YCW. He then backed it up with 135 in the semi-final. He averaged 67.44 for the season. His best bowling was against Dromana in round one when he snared 5/11 from eight overs but he didn’t bowl beyond round eight.

Players still on the move FOOTBALL

By Toe Punt WITH only a couple of weeks before the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League season opens, there are still plenty of player movements. Pearcedale will be devastated that both Rohan Hensby and Chris Swan have applied for clearances to head to the Goulburn Valley League. Hensby and Swan arrived from Tasmania a few years ago and have been sensational additions to the Panthers. The defender and midfielder will be big losses and come on the back of the loss of underrated Glenn Anderson, who is heading to the Ellinbank League. Nick Watersone is the latest player

to want out of Tyabb after applying for a clearance to Bonbeach, while Warren Hubbard also wants out. Red Hill has picked up promising former Mornington player Rhys McConville-Brain. Darren Booth has finally applied for a clearance from Rye to head back to Mt Eliza. The Demons knew at the end of last season that the star defender would be heading home. Hastings meanwhile has picked up Jarryd Elton from Tooradin. The Blues have also snared Karingal speedster Dale Alainis, a very dangerous small forward. From all reports, the Blues’ practice-match form has been superb. Meanwhile, there’s been talk for a few years about when Seaford gun Brayden Irving would join his

brothers at Frankston to play VFL. He has made the move this year, coming as a major blow for the Tigers. Bonbeach is adding some depth, none bigger than former Melbourne and Brisbane Lion player Travis Johnstone. Harley Ambrose is the latest player to want out of Karingal, joining the likes of Sam McGarry, Chris Hay, Brendan Dunne, David and Tim Hirst, Callan Dixon, Stephen Charalambous, Daniel Noble, Dale Alainis, Jared Eames, Ryan Jenke, Jack Johnson, Kane McKenzie, Anthony Joel and James Tyquin. Finally, clever and talented Mornington forward/midfielder James Cameron is going to try his luck in the VFL.
