Cruza earning his keep at pound IF it’s a case of horses for courses then Cruza is on the right track … He is proving his worth at the shire’s animal shelter in Watt Road by keeping the grass in the paddocks down. The gentle giant, who was rescued by the RSPCA after being found suffering from “extreme malnutrition”, was taken to the pound several months ago. Environment Protection manager John Rankine said Cruza was being housed under the shire’s Lost Livestock Register – the same as for cats and dogs. “Cruza the horse has been a great experience for the shelter and our rangers,” Mr Rankine said. “He was listed on the ‘Lost’ register for the required time but, unfortunately, no one has come to claim him.” Staff members are keen to bring Cruza back into tip top condition and will continue looking after him until he can be rehomed. Peninsula boat ramps in disarray, says fishing body Stephen Taylor steve@mpnews.com.au THE Futurefish Foundation has slammed the standard of Mornington Peninsula’s boat ramps as a shambles. And it has called on the major political parties to remove the management of boat ramps away from the Mornington Peninsula Shire, as well as the multitude of committees of management, which “claim to look after the smaller boat ramps”. The foundation says it is
“time for the management of all the peninsula’s boat ramps to be brought under one single boat ramp authority”. Futurefish Foundation director David Kramer came out swinging last week, saying: “It is a joke having the Rye boat ramp under reconstruction while Tootgarook and Tyrone ramps are inoperable, leaving no launching facilities between Safety Beach and Sorrento. “It is hard to understand how this situation can be occurring in mid-November’s prime time snapper season.”
Mr Kramer, who also hosts the Channel 31 TV show Talking Fishing, was joined live on air by Premier Daniel Andrews who chose the fishing show as his only “live” television appearance in the state election campaign. He announced on air that if Labor was re-elected he would create a standalone boat ramp authority. He also promised to abolish boat ramp launching and parking fees on the Mornington Peninsula. Mr Kramer told panellists on the show: “It astounds us that the Morning-
ton Peninsula Shire is reconstructing Rye boat ramp during November and [yet] didn’t call on the Capel Sound or Whitecliffs-to-Camerons-Bight committees of management to have their nearby boat ramps ready to take the increased traffic while the Rye boat ramp was out of operation”. “With the Tootgarook boat ramp closed for dredging that should have been done months ago. And the Tyrone boat ramp, which the local committee-of-management has neglected to maintain for several years now, is
also inoperable. “This is an absolute disgrace and a total disrespect for boat owners that the Mornington Peninsula’s ramps are in this situation.” The Futurefish Foundation boss said it was “most excited that Daniel Andrews will pull the Mornington Peninsula’s boat ramps away from the shire and the committees and get the ramps open, maintained and fully operational, for the thousands of boat owners who use these facilities”. Shire fears for police numbers in holiday crush
A privilege: New mayor Cr David Gill and his deputy Cr Rosie Clark. Picture: Supplied
New man at the helm RED Hill Ward’s Cr David Gill has succeeded Cr Bryan Payne as mayor of Mornington Peninsula Shire for 2018-19. He was elected at the annual council meeting on Monday 12 November. Briars Ward’s Cr Rosie Clark was elected as his deputy mayor. Cr Gill in his acceptance speech said it was a “privilege” to be appointed and thanked his councillor colleagues for their confidence and support.
“The Mornington Peninsula is such a beautiful and unique part of Victoria,” he said. “My focus will be on continuing council’s strong advocacy on Green Wedge preservation and planning issues to ensure the unique character of the Mornington Peninsula is well protected. “I look forward to working closely and openly with our local community towards having an accountable and transparent council.”
The mayor was congratulated by Cr Payne who said it had been an “honour to guide the council and to serve the peninsula as mayor”. “When I was elected mayor I compared the position to that of an orchestra conductor. I now hand that baton over to Cr Gill,” he said. “My time as mayor would not have been such a success without the support of all my councillor colleagues. I thank them for bestowing upon me such an honour.”

By Steve Taylor MORNINGTON Peninsula Shire Council is concerned about a potential shortage of police over the busy holiday period. New mayor Cr David Gill last week flagged his intention to hold “positive discussions with senior police and the government after the state election (Saturday 24 November) to ensure that adequate police numbers will be allocated to the Mornington Peninsula over summer”. This follows claims that police could be understaffed and unable to cope with an emergency situation. “Over the Christmas holiday period the population on the Mornington Peninsula explodes almost overnight: from 163,000 to 225,000-250,000 people,” Cr Gill said. “On top of this, the area is visited by an extremely large number of day trippers. Such a great influx puts a lot of demand on all emergency services.” Cr Gill said police and all the emergency services on the peninsula were at “the very heart of community safety”. “Ensuring adequate numbers of police are available at this period is vital – not only for community
safety but also for the safety of our police officers and other emergency personnel.” A 20-year police veteran last week expressed fears the peninsula was facing a “desperate shortage of frontline police” over the holiday period, (“Police stretched in holiday crush” The News 13/11/2018). The officer, who The News did not name, criticised deployment numbers, particularly at Rosebud police station, saying its nominal complement of 60 police has been drastically cut by WorkCover issues, days off after night shift, leave and the usual four days off per fortnight. These had reduced actual numbers by more than half. Compounding the problem was the allocation of 12 trainees to the station which was “burning out senior constables”. Superintendent Adrian White, who oversees the Mornington Peninsula’s policing operations, refuted claims of a dearth of police. “There is no shortage of police on the Mornington Peninsula,” he said. “We task to suit demand and we have the numbers to adequately police the region over the holiday period. “There is no crisis.”

Repeat: Contaminated water from a broken pipe flows down Earimil Creek and across the sand at Mt Eliza beach. Pictures: Supplied
Sewage flows onto Mt Eliza beach – again Stephen Taylor steve@mpnews.com.au A SECOND sewage pipe break near Mt Eliza beach on 1 November brought South East Water crews scurrying down with an excavator to cover a spill into Earimil Creek. This follows a similar spill in September in which a broken pipe sent raw sewage cascading down the Earimil Steps escarpment into the creek. (“Sewage flows to Mt Eliza beach” The News 17/9/18). Engineer and Mt Eliza Association for Environmental Care president Des Berry said the first break occurred at the start of the underground pipe at the Earimil Lookout carpark. The
second broken pipe is 15 metres south of the first pipe. “This time the raw sewage flowed onto the road and entered the storm water system which has an outlet into Earimil Creek about 100 meters upstream from where it discharges onto the beach sand,” he said. “Again, raw effluent polluted the lower reaches of the creek and the beach.” Mr Berry said South East Water crews worked through the night to repair the broken pipe, using eductor trucks to suck up the raw effluent. “The main sewer pipe alongside the Earimil steps appears to be in good condition, however, at the Earimil Lookout carpark the pipe is buried to the next pumping station
at the bottom of Kunyung Road,” he said. “It is highly likely the cast iron pipe is heavily corroded and frequent breakages will recur unless this pipe is replaced. “While they may attempt to clean up the beach area, there is a significant amount of raw sewage and effluent particles embedded in the creek and the beach at the mouth of Earimil Creek where it enters the bay. “The southern section of the beach should be closed while the clean-up takes place and probably should be closed for a time to prevent children contracting disease from any pathogens embedded in the sand.” Mr Berry said the pipe may also be porous allowing small leakage into
the surrounding soil. “To my knowledge the pipe has not been tested for porosity. The entire pipe must be replaced in the near future,” he said. Customer service manager Terry Schubach said South East Water had “responded immediately to contain the spill, minimising environmental impact and prevented the spill from entering the bay”. He said the EPA, Mornington Peninsula Shire Council and Melbourne Water had been notified and signs and markers restricted community access. The burst pipe connects to a pumping station servicing a small part of Mt Eliza – between Ballar and Earimil creeks, west of Nepean Highway. “South East Water has introduced
a proactive sewer cleaning program across the network to target sewers with a previous blockage history to prevent a recurrence,” Mr Schubach said. “We prioritised this sewer main for renewal following [the] incident in September. Design and planning are under way. We are looking at options with a view to minimising construction impacts on the area. “We expect to renew the main within three-six months and will work with council to coordinate these works.” Mr Schubach said South East Water’s latest sewer cleaning program would target sewers which have had a previous blockage history to prevent a recurrence.

Podcast of history at Mt Martha House VISITORS to Mt Martha House can tune in to podcasts to learn about the history of the former coffee palace, hotel and barracks. The 10 podcasts, which launched on Thursday 8 November, were made possible by a $5000 Mornington Peninsula Shire Placemaking grant and $1000 flexible grant to help the historical society buy a computer to catalogue its collection. “The house is such an important part of Mount Martha’s history and we’re working to share stories of the Peninsula with everyone,” the mayor Cr David Gill said. “The shire also worked with the society to produce the trail signage, including braille elements and accompanying web pages which offer direct links to the audio and text files for anyone who prefers to read the scripts.” Mt Martha House started out as what was known as a coffee palace in 1889 and then became Mt Martha Hotel, a semi private country club. It was taken over by the RAAF during WWII, and, after another stint as a hotel, was purchased by the Army as 30 WRAAC Barrack until 1976. The former Shire of Mornington then took over and renamed it Mount Martha House Community Centre for use for education purposes. The podcasts will be available using an app on new phones or by downloading a QR code reader to the older smart devices. Visitors can then self-guide around the front part of the house, using earphones so as not to disturb other users. Not all rooms will be accessi-
ble as many are hired out privately. Historical collection volunteers have a display room of photos handed down throughout the years. A WRAAC army bedroom, complete with mannequins wearing summer and winter uniforms, will be opened by arrangement. Tours are at 11am on the last Wednesday of each month for a goldcoin donation. Volunteers who are digitising memories, papers, photos and documents in the collection are keen to hear from those who have lived, worked or used the house. Visitors can book a group tour or visit by emailing mountmarthahouse. com.au/historytour

Getting to know the Mornington hopefuls FOUR candidates will contest the seat of Mornington in the state elections on Saturday 24 November. They are David Morris, Tyson Jack, David Sinclair and Ryan White. Neither Mornington nor the adjoining seat of Nepean have attracted any female candidates – making them two out of only six seats state-wide to be men-only. Mr Morris, who took over in 2006, has a seemingly safe hold on the seat with a 26 per cent majority on a two party preferred basis. Here, The News publishes biographical details of the candidates in the order they were drawn in the ballot.
David Morris Liberal
THE sitting member was elected to the Legislative Assembly in November 2006, and re-elected in 2010 and 2014. He is currently shadow minister for finance and shadow minister for local government. David has lived in the Mornington electorate for most of his adult life. He was a councillor and shire president of the old Shire of Mornington; a member of the Westernport Regional Planning Committee, and chair of the Peninsula Regional Library service. He has served as a board member of Peninsula Community Health, treasurer of the Mornington Chamber of Commerce, and as secretary and treasurer of the Mount Eliza Community Association. Prior to his election to Parliament,
Candidates (l to r) : David Morris, Tyson Jack, David Sinclair and Ryan White.
David had over 25 years’ experience in small business. He lives in Mt Eliza with his wife Linda and has three stepchildren. He enjoys swimming, walking the family dog, and working in the garden.
Tyson Jack Animal Justice Party
TYSON is 26 and this will be the third time he has run as a candidate for the party in state and federal elections. Tyson grew up on the Mornington Peninsula and has here all his life. He has been vegan for six years and says he is passionate about helping animals which are subject to the cruel practices of factory farming. He advocates for farmers to switch to cultivating plants for more ethical and sustainable farming practices. He is passionate about assisting
those in need and lives his life around the four values of the Animal Justice Party: Kindness, Non-Violence, Rationality and Equality. He hopes that by being elected by the Mornington community he can create positive change within the region for a more sustainable and compassionate society for humans and animals.
David Sinclair Greens
DAVID has lived in Mornington and Mt Martha for a decade and is proud to call it home. He is the father of three children educated at Mornington and Osbourne primaries and Mornington Secondary. His two younger children are still at school, while his eldest is studying at university. The registered nurse believes in good health services. He is qualified in general and mental health and has
worked in public health care for 30 years as a practitioner and a manager. David has worked for Peninsula Health for about 10 years, including working in community teams across the peninsula. He works in the specialist field of family violence. David is aware of the issues the community is facing and is committed to ensuring we get the support and services we need. Community groups are important for him, and he and his family are actively involved in Scouts. David prioritises social justice, community and protection of the environment.
Ryan White Australian Labor Party
RYAN grew up in the northern suburbs and now lives with his partner in Chelsea. He has worked in the manu-
facturing and service industries and is currently employed as a graphic designer. If elected he would advocate for education opportunities including free TAFE courses at the Mornington Peninsula Campus of Chisholm TAFE and improved public transport options for local residents. As a blue collar worker, Ryan is passionate about providing opportunities for all Victorians regardless of their background. Ryan chose to run for Mornington because he believes the Liberal Party has not delivered for the Mornington community and has taken the electorate for granted for too long. Ryan claims only Labor will deliver free TAFE in job-ready industries, solar for homes, the Suburban Rail Loop, Metro Tunnel, free dental checks for school children, 1,100 new nurses and midwives, and 100 new schools.

We are dedicated to the belief that a strong community newspaper is essential to a strong community. We exist to serve residents, community groups and businesses and ask for their support in return.
Dinner date for fire safety VICTORIAN Emergency Management Commissioner Andrew Crisp was the guest speaker at a dinner for local fire brigades at the Safety Beach Sailing Club, Thursday 8 November. Mornington Peninsula Shire Council hosted the event at what was Cr Bryan Payne’s last official occasion as mayor. He said the meeting provided an opportunity for councillors and staff involved in fire prevention to meet in the lead up to this year’s fire
season. “The efforts and commitment of all emergency service personnel involved in protecting our community is extremely important in providing a safe environment across the Mornington Peninsula,” Cr Payne said. “Council is urging all residents to make themselves aware of all of the emergency services information via the council’s website and ensure their properties are cleared of fire hazards
as a preventative measure for the upcoming summer months.” To be fire ready, the CFA and the shire encourage all residents to have a bushfire plan for their family and property. Visit the CFA website or contact the VicEmergency hotline 1800 226 226 for further information. Check the Mornington Peninsula Shire’s website for all fire safety information.

Talks on alpine plants, threats AUSTRALIAN alpine and subalpine plants, and the threats posed by sambar deer, are subjects to be discussed at a Cranbourne Friends of the Royal Botanic Gardens half-day workshop, 9:30am for a 10am-1pm, Sunday 25 November. It’s being held at the Australian Garden Auditorium, Cranbourne Gardens, corner Ballarto Road and Botanic Drive, Cranbourne. In the first session Neville Walsh, senior conservation botanist at the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria, will provide an overview of High Country flora. Then, Megan Hirst will speak on alpine daisies. She is a seed bank officer for the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria. Later, horticulturalists Broni Swartz and Matt Henderson will reveal plans for displaying subalpine plants in the
Australian Garden at Cranbourne in the section Subalpine Plants in the Australian Gardens – Current and Future. Rounding off, Zac Walker will look at the impacts of sambar deer on alpine plant communities on the Bogong High Plains. He is a research officer at the Research Centre for Applied Alpine Ecology, Latrobe University. The workshop is an opportunity to learn about the High Country, particularly for those joining the Cranbourne Friends’ six-day Hotham Wildflowers Discovery Tour in January. The cost is $30 members; $40 non-members and $15 students. Bookings are essential at rbgfriendscranbourne.org.au or email bookings@rbgfriendscranbourne. org.au
By Stephen Taylor A CHARMING photograph of a Mt Martha grandfather and his granddaughter marching in the Mornington Anzac Day parade last year has been chosen as the 100 Years of Repatriation stamp. And recognition of the photographs’s quality and relevance to the theme has given Mornington amateur photographer Peta Heffernan one of the greatest thrills of her life and created a bond between them that will last a lifetime. Her picture of decorated veteran Major Alec Weaver, 98, and Able Seaman Liz McCallum, taken in Main Street, was released nation-wide last month as an Australia Post stamp and postcard representing 100 years of Repatriation. The issue of repatriation was raised at the end of World War I when Australian Prime Minister Billy Hughes promised that all surviving servicemen would be brought home and cared for. That centenary milestone came as we commemorated the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War on 11 November. Ms Heffernan’s picture was first published in the Navy News last year but its significance was recognised by the Department of Veterans Affairs who saw it on Ms Heffernan’s social media. They liaised with her and Australia Post to create the stamp and the image is now part of history. “It’s been one of my proudest moments as a photographer,” said Ms Heffernan, who admits it is a “very expensive hobby”. “Alec and Liz absolutely adore each other,” she said. “He is her greatest hero.” It is not hard to see why: Major
Weaver’s wartime exploits are the stuff of legend. Born in Germany he was a member of the Hitler Youth. Visiting Australia at the outbreak of World War II he joined Australian mates who were enlisting in the AIF and saw service in New Guinea. Despite harrowing ordeals and official queries on his bona fides, he obtained Australian citizenship and later served in Vietnam and Korea, where he was wounded and honoured for his gallantry. Fluent in German and Japanese he later joined ASIO and served as a spy for 15 years before teaching Japanese at a Mornington school. Ms Heffernan said she inherited a love of the craft through her mother, Marita, who was a wedding photographer in Mornington for many years before passing away 14 years ago. Another passion is photographing water fun for members of the Disabled Surfers’ Association, which often visits Pt Leo.

Boat ramps become political
Ramping it up: Futurefish director David Kramer, left, with co-hosts Adam Ring and Steve Threlfall, Agriculture Minister Jaala Pulford and Premier Daniel Andrews, right, discussing the Mornington Peninsula Shire’s management of boat ramps. Picture: Supplied
Continued From Page 1 Daniel Andrews’ spokesperson Chris Piper later confirmed a reelected state Labor government would “review the management of boating infrastructure in Port Phillip Bay and Western Port”. “This work will be done in direct consultation with recreational fishing and boating stakeholders with a view to establishing a dedicated boating infrastructure authority,” he said. “We will also abolish all boat ramp parking and launching fees as part of our plan to reform boat ramp management in Port Phillip Bay and Western Port.” The mayor Cr David Gill asked
the Future Fish Foundation “why it thought the state government was capable of doing a better job” in managing the boat ramps. “It’s much harder to get money out of them and DELWP (the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning) is the worst department to get in contact with.” Cr Gill agreed the shire should make an effort to be better coordinated with other bodies, such as the various committees-of-management. “If this is what has happened we should have done better,” he said. “These sorts of things annoy everybody.”

FUTUREFISH Foundation director David Kramer last week took aim at the Liberal candidate for Nepean, Russell Joseph (pictured) , saying her “seems to be sitting back disinterested in the boat ramp situation”. This comes after the foundation blasted the standard of the Mornington Peninsula’s boat ramps, saying they were a “shambles”. “Mr Joseph has a safe seat and doesn’t really need to show concern for the thousands of boat owners on the peninsula,” Mr Kramer said. “His seat in state parliament is being handed to him on a platter.” Mr Kramer said Mr Joseph had never taken an interest in camping, fishing or boating – “activities that are so important to visitors and locals of the Mornington Peninsula”. “Russell recently stood by [Nepean MP] Martin Dixon in trying to triple the camp fees on the peninsula, and he is happy to see residents and visitors pay exorbitant boat launching fees that just feed the council coffers.” But Mr Joseph hit back: “Contrary to misinformed claims by Mr Kramer, the Liberal Nationals Government will create a Blue Infrastructure Fund to provide first-class infrastructure and services for recreational water users, like more boat ramps, jetties, navigational lighting as well as onshore facilities, such as bigger car parks and cleaning tables. “It is Labor which forces Victorian boat users to pay $27.7 million in fees to the state government each year with only a meagre portion of those fees being invested into better infrastructure and services for water users. “Mr Kramer always prefers to protect his Labor mates and ‘big note’ himself rather than stand up to this injustice foisted on the boating community across Victoria.” He said the Blue Infrastructure Fund would “return all proceeds of collected boating fees into improving the facilities for the boating community”. “The Liberals … will provide the investment in boating and foreshore infrastructure we desperately need in Nepean.”

Tributes flow for ‘Mr Mt Martha’ A MAN described as “Mr Mt Martha” passed away on Tuesday 6 November. John Pingiaro, 95, played a big role in the growth of the district as a founding member of Mt Martha Fire Brigade in 1951 and as an early member of the Mornington Yacht Club in 1946. He was a Life Member of Mt Martha Fire Brigade, Life Member of the CFA, received a 70 years’ service award in 2013 and a Queens Fire Brigade Long Service and Good Conduct medal, in 1974. In February this year, as a spritely 94-year-old, Mr Pingiaro took part in the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games Torch Relay along High Street, Frankston. Long-time friend and colleague at the Mt Martha brigade Bruce Conboy, who is to read the eulogy at the funeral, said Mr Pingiaro and

his wife Margaret, who died in May, had adopted Mt Martha as their home and did much to help it develop into a peaceful community with good facilities. “John was very community minded,” Mr Conboy said. “He was a fountain of knowledge on Mt Martha, especially on things around World War II. “He was very ably assisted by Margaret who was also a tireless worker for the welfare of the district.” Born in 1923, Mr Pingiaro and his family followed their father Domenici from Italy to Melbourne in 1932, moving soon after to a house in Dunns Road on the opposite side of Balcombe Creek to The Briars. He attended the single-teacher Osborne Primary and then Caulfield Technical School where he obtained his Merit Certificate. During the war he was an apprentice fitter-and-turner at a pump making business in Springvale and then
joined the Balcombe Army Camp’s apprentice school as an instructor. He joined the Mornington Bushfire Brigade and was also a member of the Volunteer Defence Corps and Victorian Coastal Battery covering Port Phillip Bay. Mr Pingiaro and his brother Frank took The Ghan to Alice Springs and then Darwin to help in the town’s rebuilding program after the war and drove trucks back to Melbourne in 1947. The pair established Mt Martha Motors in Lochiel Avenue as well as a taxi service, volunteer ambulance and hire car business to service the Army camp. In 1955 Mr Pingiaro joined the Education Department and taught at various schools, including Dromana Technical School for 14 years. “John was very proud of his teaching, especially when former students became master tradesmen,” Mr Conboy said.

He and Margaret married in 1961 and they had children Anthony, Brendan, Raymond and Elizabeth. Brendan is a member of Mt Martha Fire Brigade. “He was a very strong family man and saw that his children made good their education: one is a civil engineer, one a plumber, one a carpenter and his daughter an osteopath. He adored his two grandchildren.” Mr Pingiaro also served on the Mt Martha Citizens League, Mt Martha Community Association, and Mt Martha Foreshore Committee. In 1970 he was made a trustee of the Mt Martha Pre-School in Watson Road and treasurer of Mt Martha Scouts. “He was very passionate about the fire brigade and its activities,” Mr Conboy said. “He championed fire prevention and loved attending fire education with the children.” Margaret was also a driving force in community life, and involved with St Vincent De Paul, Mornington
Combined Churches, and Mt Martha Pre-School. “She provided John with financial sheets and reports for most of his meetings,” Mr Conboy said. “John was more than worthy of being named Mr Mt Martha. I doubt we will ever see another like him.” Mornington Yacht Club said members were “sad to say goodbye to John. He was almost a founding member of the club and sailed a sharpie.” A joint funeral service for Mr and Mrs Pingiaro will be held at St Macartans Catholic Church, Drake Street, on Thursday 22 November. The cortage will proceed to the Craigie Road cemetery where Mt Martha firefighters will hold a ritual burial service, each saying a prayer and dropping a sprig of rosemary onto the coffin. The couple’s coffins will be placed in the same grave.

Martha Cove gets top marks from cruising ‘yachties’ THE regular Martha Cove cruise weekend was a great success with 13 boats from cruising divisions sailing in for their annual southern end of Port Phillip meeting and social event over the Melbourne Cup long weekend. Several ocean-going veterans have completed thousands of miles of sailing in Australia and elsewhere, including Hugh Pilsworth who completed two circumnavigations in February. Another was a couple who had just completed 32,000 kilometres in their 14-metre catamaran and a couple who sailed 51,500 kilometres to Osaka, Japan, as well as Canada and through the Pacific. Others had sailed in the San Francisco-to-Hawaii race before
returning to Australia. The weekend was to celebrate family cruising on the bay and welcome these ocean travellers. The cruise group specialises in assisting families gain experience and training to give them the knowledge and confidence to go sailing and visit interesting places as well as sail to more distance destinations. “We have many partners and female skippers who also sail ocean vessels and it was great to meet new members and younger families who are enjoying bay and ocean cruising this year,” the Cruising Yacht Association of Victoria’s Ian Reichelt said. “We were very grateful to Martha
Cove marina for accommodating all the boats and making our stay such an enjoyable event. The staff were so helpful as were the many volunteers who assisted us make this year’s event so successful.” The organisers thanked Prom Ocean Australia which supplied welcome packs; RACV Marine Insurers; Ian Ross of AUDI Mornington; Frank Hammond of Horizon Sailmakers, and Karina Winery which hosted a wine tasting and supplied wine for the barbecue. “Mornington Peninsula is a fabulous area to visit and I would recommend spending a lot more time at this end of the bay,” Mr Reichelt said.

Runners, walkers rise to the Challenge THE Arthurs Seat Challenge on Sunday 11 November promoted the profile of the Fit to Drive program and to raise funds for it to continue. The number of entrants in the annual 6.7km fun run and walk was greater than expected at nearly 1300. Organisers said the cool weather was perfect for those who rose to the challenge of walking or running from
near Rosebud Primary School to the top of Arthurs Seat and finishing at Seawinds Gardens. The first-time male winner was Jake Stevens with a time of 0.27.35. The female winner was reigning champion Bec Rosel, in 0.30.07. The largest school entry was Mt Eliza Secondary College and the fastest school was Padua College. For the
second year in a row Team Lyndon took out the award for largest community team. Challenge Ambassador Steve Bastoni joined in for his first attempt, taking an hour to finish. His goal is to beat that time next year. Funds raised from the Challenge go to the Fit-to-Drive program for schools in Frankston and on the
Mornington Peninsula. This removes any financial burden and ensures all Year 11 students have access to this best practice and road safety program. The Challenge is made possible by support from sponsors, businesses, schools, community groups, and volunteers. Ongoing support was provided by major partners BlueScope Western Port, Your Community
Bank Dromana/Rye/Rosebud, and Mornington Peninsula News Group, as well as newcomers Spicy Web. More information about the Fit-toDrive program can be found at f2d. com.au For further information about the Arthurs Seat Challenge go to arthursseatchallenge.com.au

ON THE COVER
ENGLISH CHARM ATOP OLIVERS HILL GRACE and exceptional grandeur unite atop Olivers Hill with this sweeping Englishinspired residence in the exclusive Bruarong Mews – a private, gated community consisting of only three homes set around a magnificent circular drive with a water feature. Set on an 878 square metre block, this is the largest of the three homes here and features formal and casual living and dining zones that cater to all occasions. The centrepiece is undoubtedly the handsome sunken lounge with open fire and French doors that open to the outdoor deck with heated spa. An equally grand dining area with parquetry floors adjoins the kitchen which is incorporated into a well-lit family area with casual meals space and a lounge which also opens to the undercover patio. The kitchen features stone bench tops and Bosch stainless-steel appliances. There are three established bedrooms with a lavish master bedroom boasting a huge walk-through dressing room to an ensuite with marble tiling and twin vanities. A guest bedroom also has an ensuite, and a separate study could be a fourth bedroom if required. To main bathroom is a spa bath and there are two powder rooms. The third living room on the upper level will astound you with space and light and would be perfect for the ultimate in executive home offices; complete with a wet bar and open fire place. Other appointments to this enchanting property include ducted heating and air-conditioning, and from the communal turning circle is an excellent three-car garage with workshop with internal access.n

Art pops-up at Red Hill TWO Mornington Peninsula artists have teamed up to open a pop-up gallery at Red Hill. Potter Sandi Faulkner and contemporary gold and silversmith Katrina Newman will be available over two weeks to talk about their work and welcome visitors to shop 1/1016 Mornington-Flinders Road. After art school Faulkner, with almost 5O years’ pottery experience, trained under Viennese master potter Franz Kukowetz, of Terra Nigra. She was a production potter and teacher at the old Chelsea pottery in London. From her studio at Mt Martha she makes small batches and individual pieces using ash from the Outback and peninsula vegetation in the glazes. She says she is inspired by her coastal surroundings ... and, of course, the birds. Newman, a gold and silversmith for 30 years, studied at Canberra School of Art and Design at the ANU, Canberra. She works from her home studio at McCrae which has views across her bush garden to Port Phillip Bay and up to Arthurs Seat. Newman’s love of the coast and Australian landscapes are evident throughout her recent work. She uses the ancient technique of cuttlefish casting to create a unique style and will be happy to share the process with visitors. The gallery will be open 11am-4.30pm, Tuesday to Sunday, from 23 November to 9 December. The artists will celebrate their collaboration with friends at a party at the gallery, 6-9pm, Friday 23 November. For further details please contact Katrina on 0413 304 013 or email katrina@katrinanewman.com or sandifaulkner@me.com

Charges over paramedic’s injuries A SOMERVILLE man has been charged with allegedly assaulting an off-duty female paramedic in a road rage incident in Bungower Road, Thursday 1 November. The man, 21, allegedly started following the 23-year-old when she flashed her headlights at him after he “cut her off”. Police will allege that when the woman parked her car, the man approached and smashed her window and kicked her side mirror. He is then alleged to have punched her in the face and struck her with a can of deodorant. The woman, who was in uniform, suffered facial injuries, including a broken eye socket. She is yet to learn if she will have to undergo surgery. Detective Senior Sergeant Alan Paxton, of Mornington Peninsula CIU, said the man left the scene but was later apprehended at Frankston. He faced Frankston Magistrates’ Court the next day charged with assaulting an emergency worker and intentionally causing serious injury, as well as possessing cannabis and a controlled weapon. He was remanded in custody to reappear at the same court at a later date.

Time for a break: Fargo is looking very satisfied with his night’s work in the back seat of the Somerville Highway Patrol’s SS Commodore. Picture: Supplied Close call: A lady was lucky to escape with only minor injuries after hitting a stationary truck on Coolart Road. Picture: Supplied
Police allege the 29-year-old evaded police in Carrum Downs before being chased along Nepean Highway and into Kunyung Road. The driver, who was on bail, was charged with drug-related offences and appeared at Frankston Magistrates’ Court the same day. He has been further remanded to a later date.
Police K9 sniffs out teen suspect at Hastings
POLICE Dog Squad member Fargo put his nose to the ground and tracked down a 15-year-old Hastings youth after two houses were allegedly broken into at Hastings, Tuesday night 13 November. Several police units converged on the area about 1.15am after reports of break-ins and began a lengthy search. Fargo tracked the youth after he was seen disappearing into nearby bushland. Another youth was not found. After covering some distance during his “track”, and having earned a

Woman runs into back of truck A TYABB woman heading home after nightshift was taken to hospital with minor injuries after she ran into the back of a stationary truck in Coolart Road, between Mornington-Tyabb Road and Bungower Road, early Wednesday 7 November. The driver of the truck was waiting to turn right before the collision. Leading Senior Constable Greg Wolfe said it only takes a momentary break in concentration for things to go wrong. Please drive safely.
Stolen car in crime spree POLICE are investigating a series of ram raids in a stolen car in the Somerville area. The 2004 silver Ford ute
was stolen from a house in Bellary Lane, Langwarrin, 5.30am, Wednesday 7 November. A man broke into a shed and stole tools as well as the keys to the car before driving it away. The next burglary was at Woodleigh School, Frankston South, overnight Thursday 8 November when the ute was reversed into a shed door and tools stolen. The ute was then spotted in Simcox Street, Somerville, where the driver attempted two more ram raids. Both were unsuccessful. Police are searching for a man described as 183cm, thin build, wearing dark clothes and white runners. Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000.
Road rage on freeway MORNINGTON detectives are investigating a suspected road rage punchup on the Mornington Peninsula Freeway, Wednesday 14 November. A Rye man driving a Holden Commodore reportedly clashed with two
men in a Mercedes sedan, one of Taylors Hill and the other of Sunshine North, after they pulled over into the emergency lane opposite the Safety Beach Country Club, 6.20am. After the incident the Rye man was taken to the Frankston Hospital but was expected to be released late last week. The others were treated at the scene. The three men are believed to know each other. Police later charged the men in the Mercedes with assault and drugrelated offences. One was remanded in custody and the other bailed. They will appear at Frankston Magistrates’ Court at a later date. The Rye man is said to be assisting police with their inquiries. Anyone who witnessed the incident or has dash-cam footage is asked to call Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000.
Car found on fire A WHITE Toyota Landcruiser was set alight on Tyabb-Tooradin Road, 3am, Sunday 11 November. Mornington Peninsula CIU is investigating.
Not home alone A CAPEL Sound man awoke to find a man standing in his hallway, 4.30am, Wednesday 7 November. Senior Sergeant Alan Paxton, of Mornington Peninsula CIU, said the man chased the burglar from the Florence Avenue house. After a confrontation in the front garden the man escaped. Nothing was stolen. He is said to be 183cm. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000.

THE MEANING OF EXISTENCE... AND OTHER SHORT STORIES
The Yuletide Is Now Coming In By Stuart McCullough I CAN’T wait for Christmas. I’ve no idea how many sleeps it is but I’m awaiting it with breath so baited you could catch a trout with it. I love it all – the rising sense of anticipation and sense of release when the day finally arrives. Granted, there are administrative complexities – with everybody married or partnered and various competing interests, it’s easier to organize a war than it is a Christmas family function. Regardless, I think it’s great. We had overseas relatives. These were mostly people I’d met once, when my Aunt got married in 1982. Given the significance of the occasion, a posse of my great Aunts came out from Ireland. (I doubt they’d ever use a term like ‘posse’, but ‘gang’ might suggest they were all carrying switchblades instead of handbags, which, to the best of my knowledge, they weren’t.) To a child they looked like old ladies. But they were stern and tough. I suspect any one of them could have taken my father down in an arm wrestling competition. Unluckily for me, the reception included dancing but did not extend to arm wrestling. Not officially. Weddings aside, we heard from our overseas relatives on birthdays and at Christmas. Even though they hardly knew us at all, they always sent gifts. And those gifts were, without fail, monogrammed handkerchiefs. For decades, I never had to buy a handkerchief – my great Aunts had ensured I was well stocked. A monogrammed handkerchief is an
odd thing, when you think about it. An anonymous handkerchief gives you the option of disowning whatever disgusting thing you manage to blow between its linen pages. It defies logic that you should want people to know that whatever’s in there belongs to you. Presumably monogrammed handkerchiefs were invented in age before business cards existed. You could meet a potential business associate and rather than hand them your contact details on a card, you could simply give them your handkerchief. ‘Here,’ you might say as you pressed a folded fabric square into the palm of a new acquaintance, ‘I blew my nose in this earlier.’ That’s how real friend-
ships are made. While my great Aunts could be counted on to send hankies with our initials, my parents would be responsible for stuffing the stockings, so to speak. Each child in our family had a stocking. On Christmas Day it would be stuffed full of things we’d only ever see once a year. Chocolate coins, miniature hard-boiled lollies in a tiny jar and coloured popcorn that was always stale on the day you got it. Always. These things had little chance of surviving the day and guaranteed that someone would be seriously car sick at some point. For that was the other thing – everything had to be done on the day itself. This meant visiting
both sets of grandparents and gorging ourselves to the point of illness in between sitting in a traffic jam. It was always awkward – the day would begin with a shower of presents that you were then expected to leave as you began a marathon of Christmas meals that would only end when the last crumb of Christmas pudding was fed to you through a tube. It’s different now. The whole thing takes about a week; to visit every satellite and outpost branch of the family. After a time, it becomes a Groundhog Day event. Except that instead of Sonny and Cher’s ‘I Got You Babe’ playing on a loop, it’s the Christmas album that Michael Buble re-releases every year. It’s enough to
drive someone, if not to the brink of insanity, then certainly to Northcote and back. Even along Punt Road. My father has come in for his fairshare of criticism. For a long time, this was a direct result of his refusal to buy a new Christmas tree. The old one had been almost entirely denuded of its plastic needles with the end result looking less festive than it did the end result of some minor apocalypse. It was tiny, too. So much so that as the family grew steadily bigger, there was a very real chance that the tree would be under the presents, rather than the other way around. I love the moment when the my various nephews and nieces – some of whom have had to restrain themselves – are let off the leash in search of a gift with their name on it. I love the way the younger, more enthusiastic members, stand astride wrapped packages like Godzilla, about to wreak destruction. That kind of fervor is a fleeting temporal thing. It should be celebrated, I think. My brother’s specialty is lighting the brandy to pour over dessert. It never fails to impress the children who – in terms of best practice – would be better off if they weren’t fascinated with fire. Each year, my brother tries to outdo himself. The day will surely come when the dessert immolates entirely and can only be identified through its dental records. It’s chaotic and imperfect but I wouldn’t miss it. As the Christmas pudding succumbs to the flames, I’ll be there, munching stale coloured popcorn as I watch. I can’t wait. stuart@stuartmccullough.com

Christmas at the Old Treasury 12 November 2018 – 6 January 2019 Immerse yourself in a time gone by! Visit the Old Treasury Building’s annual Christmas display from the 1920s. By the 1920s sophisticated Christmas decorations were for sale in shops, but most people could not afford them. Newspapers would print designs and patterns for cheerful decorations which could be made at home. Old Treasury Building has used these patterns to recreate a homely Christmas in the caretakers’ basement at. We’ll also share some old recipes for Christmas food too! You’ll recognise some things – but others will be an eye opener! Game saver: A century to Justin Grant helped Mt Eliza get across the line for a win. Picture: Andrew Hurst
Century gets Mount Eliza across the line By Brodie Cowburn
PROVINCIAL
AN expertly taken century from Justin Grant has helped Mt Eliza to a nailbiter two day win over Mornington at Emil Madsen Reserve. A big first day score of 85 from Ben Clements helped the Bulldogs to a good total of 216, which looked to be defendable. A top order collapse and some middle order struggles saw the Redlegs struggling at 6/86, before Grant really stamped his authority on the game. His unbeaten century saw them surpass their target of 216 with only two wickets in hand. At Baxter Park, Peninsula Old Boys were thoroughly defeat by an impressive Baxter side. OB’s tame total of 104 was passed with ease, as Baxter recovered from 2/15 to end up at 2/245 at the close of play. Daniel Warwick’s 77 not out, including 15 fours, proved the highlight of the day. Pearcedale’s decision to bat first in their match against Sorrento proved an unwise decision, as the Sharks made easy work of them on day two of their claws. Needing to beat 140 for the win, Sorrento put together a good middle order performance to end their innings at 7/214 before declaring. Pearcedale put on a better showing from 40 overs in their second innings, with an opening stand of 86 runs helping them along to 4/159, though the first innings was already lost.

At Lloyd Park, Flinders could only manage a paltry total of 57 against Langwarrin. All four Langy bowlers claimed a wicket as they tore through the side, enforcing the follow on and keeping them to 4/53 off their second innings.

RED Hill have might light work of a target of 168 in their match against Crib Point at Crib Point Recreation Reserve. Crib Point would have liked their chances after getting off to a brilliant start and leaving the Hillmen bruised at 3/23. 3 and 4 batsmen Simon Dart and Alex Browne then steadied the ship, scoring a whopping 164 runs between them to put their side firmly in the box seat. Red Hill ended the day at 7/250. Pines had to work hard in order to defend their total of 189. But got the job done against Somerville. Somerville lost their first wicket without score to get off to a rocky start, but quickly got things back on track with a 64 run partnership. At 3/142 they would have liked their chances of going on to win, but a disastrous collapse left them all out for 171. Patrick Jackson did the damage, taking 8/68 off a stunning 42 overs. At Overport Park, a slow scoring Baden Powell could not get near a total of 165 set by Long Island. Baden Powell’s opening three batsmen combined for just 15 runs, leav-

ing them little chance. They were bowled out for 115 runs. Stuart Swift was pick of the bowlers, taking a five wicket haul on the day. Moorooduc have bounced back well to restore some pride after a disastrous first innings against Main Ridge. After their first innings came to a close for just 86 runs, they were keen to make amends. Reece Cordeaux’s 7 wickets saw them bring Main Ridge’s first innings to a close for 151, but it was Moorooduc’s second innings where they really impressed. They bounced back from their first innings total of 86 to make 7/218 before declaring. Main Ridge also had a crack at a second innings, and ended their day in a disappointing position at 6/83
DISTRICT
DELACOMBE Park have battled hard to get within touching distance, but fallen just short of their target against Rosebud. Chasing 185 to win, a good opening run stand of 39 was broken up by two quick wickets, the second being a runout. Jaquoin Mackenzie helped his side stay in reach with a serviceable 39, but ultimately his Rosebud teammates couldn’t top him, and they fell just short at all out for 167. Billy Quigley impressed with ball in hand, claiming five wickets. Mt Martha have nearly pulled off a miracle win over Seaford, bouncing back from 7/63 to nearly chase down
152 to win. Rhys Whitling’s brilliant half century from the tail nearly proved the difference, but ultimately his side ended up all out for 127. Whitling was the last man out, and was close to pulling off an almighty achievement. Seaford came in for a second innings, but ended the day at 6/98. Hastings have battered Seaford Tigers thanks to a brilliant century from Malith Chathuranga. His knock of 107 not out, with 14 fours to his name, was helpful in getting his side to a total of 4/225 by stumps. They met their target of 132 with little trouble. At Bruce Park, Heatherhill’s mammoth total of 9/285 was challenged by a brave Carrum side who came not far off meeting their lofty target. Carrum worked hard to keep the run rate ticking, but ultimately ended up all out for an impressive total of 250.
SUB DISTRICT
A SENSATIONAL batting collapse from Rye has opened the door for Tootgarook to claim a shock first innings win in their two day clash. Defending just 109 runs, Tootgarook had their work well and truly cut out for them. Rye however collapsed sensationally, losing their first three wickets in succession as Jacob Long claimed a hat trick. He would finish with a stunning 8 wickets, as Rye were bowled out for 75. Tootgarook came back in and made a snappy 155 before declaring and
chasing the second innings as well. Rye struggled, but held their nerve as they ended the day at 5/88. Skye’s tame total of 153 was enough to hold off the Tyabb on Saturday, as the Yabbies suffered from opening and tail end collapsed. The Yabbies were left languishing at 2/4, and also lost their last 5 wickets for just 10 runs. Clint Donohue was the star bowler for Skye, claiming 6/12 off 14 overs. Skye came in for a second innings and finished up at 1/34 at stumps. Frankston YCW can count themselves unlucky to have fallen short of Boneo’s target of 199 runs. Off to a tough start at 2/13, the Stonecats slowly worked their way into the game with some good middle order performances. Although they look threatening, YCW eventually fell short and were bowled out for 177. Sean Spencer took nearly career best bowling figures of 5/29, including the scalps of both openers. Dromana’s team performance earned them a total of 191 last week, a total that could be easily defended. Carrum Downs looked up to the task however, and worked hard to chip away at the total. Despite their best efforts, Carrums Downs were bowled out for 173 with 7 overs to spare. Zacc Clan’s 5/41 made him the pick of the bowlers. Balnarring had a bye.

Watch out for Mornington SOCCER
By Craig MacKenzie ADAM Jamieson is close to finalising a senior squad which he believes can take Mornington into the NPL. While other local clubs have been announcing new signings in a piecemeal manner Jamieson has quietly gone about the business of overhauling his playing staff and he’s pleased with the outcome. Last week the club took to social media to name the 14 players already secured for next season. “It’s a pretty strong squad on paper but we know what on paper means and until you go out there and do it then it doesn’t mean much,” Jamieson said. He’s known for keeping his cards close to his chest but will at least acknowledge that this current squad has more players with NPL experience than ever before. Striker Amir Osmancevic has joined from Northcote, defenders Andy McIntyre and Andy Mclean and striker Liam Baxter have been signed from Langwarrin, midfielder Sam Catherine has been lured from Dandenong Thunder along with goalkeeper Sermin Sadkovski from Richmond while midfielder or winger Ross Clark has joined from Mooroolbark. Goalkeeper Steve Bayard, defenders Josh Valadon and Charlie Parker and midfielders Sam Scott and Andre Bennett have been retained while 20-year-old defender Lachy Thomas and 20-year-old forward Charlie O’Connell have been promoted from the club’s development squad. Jamieson is keen to retain Craig Smart, Keegan Ziada and Sammy Orritt but negotiations are ongoing and the future of Stefan Soler is unclear. Smart has been linked with Peninsula Strikers and Berwick City, Ziada with Berwick City and Orritt with Oakleigh Cannons. Stevie Elliott has joined Doveton, Jamie Cumming has joined Langwarrin and Max Etheridge is rumoured to be on the radar of former club Kingston City. “Next season we can have four visa players on a teamsheet and at the moment we’ve only got three,” Jamieson said. “Sammy would be the fourth visa if we can convince him to stay and believe me I’m trying.” The top two sides in State 1 SouthEast will be promoted to a third-tier elite league created for the 2020 season and Jamieson aims to take Mornington there. “It’s a fresh start for everyone really.

The plan from day one was to get a lot of new boys in as some boys wanted to move on and some boys went back to the UK and New Zealand. “I’m really excited about this squad and I’m super excited about working with [new assistant coach] Nathan Peel. “He’s worked at every professional level in England and he’s going to be an unbelievable asset to the football club, to all the players and to be honest to me too. I’m going to learn a lot which is going to be great for my development as a coach and manager.” Jamieson has pinpointed poor home results over the past two seasons as an area of concern and that has prompted the scheduling of a number of preseason matches at Dallas Brooks Park. Mornington will host Peninsula Strikers on Thursday 14 February, Banyule on Saturday 16 February, Berwick City on Saturday 23 February and Clifton Hill on Saturday 16 March. Mornington will try to win the Steve Wallace Memorial Cup for a sixth straight year on Saturday 2 February and will open its 2019 FFA Cup campaign on Saturday 9 March.
Jamieson and Peel will start pre-season training on Tuesday 27 November and the last session for 2018 will be on Tuesday 18 December. Training resumes on Tuesday 15 January and a pre-season camp at Barwon Heads has been scheduled for the first weekend in March. The main pitch at Dallas Brooks Park is now floodlit and Mornington may play a couple of night games next season. In NPLW news American import Michaela Dooley has left Southern United after arriving last July from Swedish club Skövde KIK. The 23-year-old was on a two-year contract with Southern with a oneyear option and chose the Monterey Reserve outfit after turning down a short-term offer of $2500 a month, a job and free accommodation from a Queensland-based club. Although Dooley has agreed terms with a Brisbane-based side competing in Queensland’s NPLW competition it is not the club which tried to snatch her from Southern’s grasp last season. Dooley will play with Souths United in 2019. The club finished fourth last season
and is expected to recruit aggressively with a view to challenging for the title next year. “I know a couple of girls there and they have a strong competitive environment and they work on bringing in a couple of internationals each year,” Dooley said. “I really enjoyed my time at Southern and the girls there went above and beyond to make sure I integrated. “The sense of community and their youth program are a big plus and even though we struggled we improved a ton by the end of the season. “Hopefully they’ll have a good year and I’ll certainly be following them from afar.” In State 3 South-East news Skye United senior coach Phil McGuinness is trying to hold on to the core group of players who took the club to a thirdplaced finish in State 3 South-East last season. Star striker Caleb Nicholes retired before the last match of the 2018 season and McGuinness is acutely aware of the impact that could have. “The absence of his goals and experience has left a huge hole to fill but Daniel Attard and Mitch Blake are
looking forward to the challenge of filling the big man’s boots and we’re also looking at bringing in a third striker to keep the competition healthy up front,” McGuinness said. “We don’t have the spending power of some of the clubs in our area so it’s important to keep hold of the players we have.” Midfielders Mark O’Connor (calf) and Marcus Collier (ACL) are recovering from injuries and McGuinness hopes to have Collier available midway through the 2019 season. Baxter and Frankston Pines are among a group of clubs circling around young midfielder Jack Gallagher. “Yeah I’ve heard he’s creating a lot of interest from other clubs but I had a chat with him and he seems pretty happy to stay and fight for his spot,” McGuinness said. “I’ve been in contact with a few of my old players from my Langy days (as reserves coach) and hopefully I’ve done enough to convince them to try out at Skye during preseason.” In State 4 South news Seaford United announced last week that brothers Matt and Jeremy Schwellinger and Dion Stallbaum had been re-signed for next season. In State 5 South news former Berwick City reserves coach Lee Barber is the new senior coach of Aspendale Stingrays. Barber has 40 years’ experience as a player, referee and coach and has been in charge of the Berwick reserves for the past four seasons. Young Stingrays defender Alex Griffiths did his ACL while playing for the seniors last season and missed out on the under-18A finals. He put surgery on hold while concentrating on his VCE exams and will miss the 2019 season. The Stingrays’ attacking options have been bolstered with leading scorer Domenic Paul signing on for next season and Alex Taylor-Hirst returning from working in the UK. Taylor-Hirst scored 11 goals in the 10 games he played this year. Under-18 strikers Quinn Carter and Ben Garside Weinert are expected to be involved with the senior squad alongside key defender Noah Berends and goalkeeper Matthew Self who played in the reserves this season as well as the title-winning under-18 side. Under-18s midfielders James Macnab and Justin Lampert both had a taste of senior soccer last season and have re-signed for 2019.

Steelers open up mental health chat THE WESTERN Port Steelers will lead the way when it comes to mental health and wellbeing for basketballers in Victoria as they commence their new resilience project on Tuesday 11 December. Becoming the first basketball association in Victoria to implement this initiative, the Steelers will hold a “resilience project” information session that looks at building resilience within sporting clubs, schools and work places as well as opening up conversations about mental health and positive health habits. The program is targeted towards the junior basketballers, in particular the representative players due to the perceived extra pressure of competing at that level, to help teach them ways to handle the stress and continue to enjoy a sport they love competing in. Western Port Steelers head of Health and Well-being, Carina Spencer, said she was looking forward to seeing the program kick off at the club. “Westernport basketball association has recently invested time and money supported by a grant in creating a health and well-being program including youth mental health first aid trained officers as well as counsellor strategies
and advice for our referees,” Spencer said. “It is a much welcomed program and the benefits have been evident to date as it opens up conversations about mental health as well as positive health habits including mindfulness. “We are the first basketball association in Victoria to implement this initiative and we are hoping we can continue to bring our basketball community with ongoing training and support throughout all levels of the association.” On top of the “resilience project”, the program also entails a “positive coaching” course which will be used to assist the Steelers’ representative coaches. Western Port Steelers basketball operations manager, Tyler Molloy, was also keen to see the program take off at the club. “I think it’s awesome,” he said. “I coach some junior teams and I think it’s very important these days to focus on these issues. It’s a huge learning tool and it’s reasonably new so hopefully we can be an innovator for this project and hopefully more clubs will follow suit.” The information session is free for Western Port Steelers players and while it isn’t compulsory, it’s a highly recommended event to attend.

Peninsula’s best face off in bowling finals SOME of the best bowlers from the Mornington Peninsula will battle it out in the Regional Triples Final on Wednesday 21 November at the Mount Eliza Bowling Club. Having made their way through the semifinals in convincing fashion, Mt Eliza will play off against Frankston in the Men’s division while Dromana and Karingal will face off in the Women’s division. A packed crowd is anticipated to attend the final which will be played under-lights and is set to kick off at 6:00pm. Mount Eliza Bowling Club chairman, Dale Verhagen, said he was very much looking forward to seeing how Mt Eliza go against Frankston. “We didn’t have a team in this last year,”
Verhagen said. “It’s quite a strong competition on the Peninsula but I think we’re going into this year with a good chance. They had a comfortable semi-final win and hopefully they can do it again, but I’m confident they’ll go well in a fairly even competition.” The Peninsula Bowling Division invited Mt Eliza to host the Regional Triple Finals this year and Verhagen said it was an offer that the club was “obviously quite happy to take up”. “There’s usually a lot of food and drink for everyone and it always seems to be quite a good night,” he said. The winners of the Regional Triples Finals will then head towards the State Triples Finals at the Brighton Bowling Club.

Carrum Stars live out their “bag of dreams” By Ben Triandafillou FROM suffering defeat in a lowly rated maiden to finding success at the elite level, a group of former Carrum footballers have enjoyed living out a piece of their “bag of dreams” over the recent spring racing carnival. The Robbie Laing-trained and aptly named colt, Stars of Carrum, surged his way into the $2 million Group One Victoria Derby field on Saturday 3 November where he finished runners-up and took his winning prize money to $526,355 from nine starts. Despite looking unlikely to have enough earnings to make the Derby field, the 20-strong ownership group along with trainer, Robbie Laing, believed their colt still had the ability to match it with the best three-yearold stayers in the country. Their faith certainly wasn’t misplaced as the son of Melbourne Cup victor, Fiorente, went from being defeated by a lip in a Bairnsdale maiden at the start of October to notching his first victory two starts later in the $200,000 Group Two Moonee Valley Vase at the odds of $51. That victory provided Stars of Carrum with enough prize money to make the final field for the Flemington feature. Majority owner and avid racing fan, Peter Cox, said it was incredible to even get to the Derby considering where Stars of Carrum finished at his previous starts. “It’s our eight-day claim to fame,” Cox said. “[Stars of Carrum] went from winning $29,000 and being lucky to actually make that Moonee Valley Vase field to then winning the race and running second in the Derby. He went from $29,000 (after seven starts) to now $526,000 and making nearly half a million dollars in eight days. “If we were told when we were in a Bairnsdale maiden and we lost by a lip that we would go onto run second in the Derby I think we would have taken that beautifully.” “It’s quite incredible because most of the owners in this horse, it’s their first horse that they’ve ever owned. I’m sure some of the first-time own-

ers would be thinking ‘how easy is this, we should have been in this years ago’.” Despite having minimal luck with his other 15 horses he’s been involved in, Cox has always held belief that the Stars of Carrum would go onto win big things. “I really wanted to be involved with a Fiorente colt and when I found out last year that Robbie hadn’t sold any shares in this one I told him ‘I’d take 50 per cent right now’ and would find others to come in as well,” Cox said. “I crashed a barbeque with some of the former Carrum footballers there and said ‘I know you lot know close to nothing about racehorses but I know you like one week of the carnival, the Melbourne Cup’. I said to them ‘I have the 2020 Melbourne Cup winner right here’ and I handed out sheets to them all. “I said I was prepared to have up to 20 owners that way everyone gets their name in the race book. Within a few weeks I had all the slots filled and Robbie even wanted to stay in the horse.” The ownership group in the Stars of
Carrum, who races in navy blue with red starred silks in support of Cox’s favourite AFL team, Melbourne, has ticked off one dream and will be out to check off another next year. “We got the dream of the Derby and now maybe the next dream can be bought a year ahead from 2020 and maybe we can try and get into the Melbourne Cup with a lightweight,” Cox said. “You’ve got to qualify but why not have the bag of dreams. Every horse owner has a bag of dreams and I reckon that’d be ours.” That dream may have become slightly closer to a reality with the Victoria Racing Club’s decision to introduce a fifth ballot exempt race for the Melbourne Cup next year - The Andrew Ramsden, which will be held in May for three, four and five-yearold horses. Whether or not they reach the dream of a start in the Melbourne Cup, Cox said to just be able to have fun chatting with co-owners and celebrating a success story like this is what horse ownership is all about.
Juniors have a ball at Frankston Cup, Hewitt cheers By Ben Triandafillou BETTER Tennis’ fourth and final bronze tournament for the year, the 2018 Frankston Cup, had some exceptional talent on and off the court. The three day event which kicked off on Saturday 3 November had more than 180 talented juniors competing across the Frankston and Overport Park venues. There was also the rare sighting of Australian tennis star and former world number one, Lleyton Hewitt, on the sidelines cheering on his son, Cruz, who competed in the under-12s competition. Cruz made the quarter-finals in the 64 player draw. Retired professional tennis player Peter Luczak also attended the tournament. Better Tennis coach David Laird said it was great to have the tennis stars on the sidelines as the junior tennis players loved the excitement built up around them. “The first day [Lleyton] was a little bit undercover and watching his son Cruz play but by the end of the day he was taking pictures with everyone and really interacting with the kids which was great to see,” Laird said. For the tournament itself, Laird said it just continues to get more popular each time. “It keeps growing in numbers every time we have one of these competitions,” he said. “We had to hire 10 courts from Overport Park on the first two days, with Brad [Grose]
overseeing everything there, and then we used another 15 courts down at Frankston as well for the entire time.” “It all went really smooth which was probably helped by Steven [Foot]’s scheduling as everything was planned perfectly to time. “Sometimes people try to cram in too many matches for a tournament but Steve nailed it and everything ran perfectly.” The winners from the 2018 Frankston Cup were: under-11 Boys Singles - Nicholas Huang; under-11 Girls Singles - Kylah Schuwalow; under-12 Boys Singles - Josh Ascar; under-12 Boys Doubles - Nick Fraser & Sebastian Tring; under-12 Girls Singles - Kimiko Cooper; under-12 Girls Doubles - Kimiko Cooper & Lily Koleski; under-14 Boys Singles - Joshua Mercuri; under-14 Boys Doubles - Joshua Mercuri & Nicholas Miloi; under-14 Girls Singles - Madi Howell; under-14 Girls Doubles - Isabella Chessler & Jasmine Harding; under-16 Boys Singles - John McDonald; under-16 Boys Doubles - Harrison Flack & Cooper Gibbs; under-16 Girls Singles - Jasmyn Heriot; and under-16 Girls Doubles - Jasmyn Heriot & Phillipa Speldewinde.
