Surfers to the rescue SURFERS from the Mornington Peninsula have long enjoyed riding waves in Papua New Guinea. Their feats on the warm water swells are being copied by PNG youngsters who venture out on almost anything that floats. Unfortunately, the available timbers are mostly full of splinters and rotting, often the remains of dugout canoes. Mornington man Marty Brown, left, was so impressed by the Papua New Guineans’ enthusiasm that he started collecting surfboards to send to our northern neighbours. Now he’s been joined on his rescue mission by two Mt Eliza men who run workshops for handmade wooden surfboards. See “Wave riders craft boards for PNG on Page 10. Picture: Yanni

Electorate short-changed By Mike Hast THE electorate of Mornington fared badly in Tuesday’s state budget. While there was money for Hastings and Nepean (southern peninsula) electorates, Mornington received just $450,000 for the bus interchange in Barkly St, but this was money rolled over from last year’s budget that had not been spent due to traders’ concerns about the location. The only other cash for the area was for South East Water to continue works

at Mt Martha sewage treatment plant. Overall, the region fared better than last year. Big ticket items for the peninsula included: ď Ž $110 million for the Port of Hastings (announced on 4 April). ď Ž $14.3 million for Somerville police station. ď Ž $2.8 million for Rosebud Primary School. ď Ž Money for South East Water to continue works at Boneo sewage treatment plant.

Last year the budget provided little for the region. The biggest item was $9.6 million for speed cameras on Peninsula Link. The cameras have been installed but are not yet on (see Page 9). In this year’s budget, neighbouring Frankston fared better than the peninsula with $100 million to upgrade the Frankston train line, $13.8 million to upgrade Frankston station, $8.1 million for Mt Erin Secondary College and $2.5 million to remove silt from Kananook Creek.

Hastings MP Neale Burgess said he was “delighted with the budget and that “the electorate of Hastings, including communities in the Western Port and Langwarrin areas, have been a big winner. He said money for Frankston train line and station would benefit the peninsula. “Improvements to the Frankston transit interchange will include new lighting, signs, safe taxi pick-up area, ‘kiss and ride’, public art, new foot-

paths, public seating and upgrades to the pedestrian underpass, bus shelters and covered ways to shield passengers from heat, wind and rain; and traffic light and signal upgrades to improve bus access. After the budget, the government made separate announcements about cash for schools including Mt Erin Secondary College and Rosebud Primary School. Mornington MP David Morris could not be contacted before deadline.
