Frankston students have given a collective thumbs-down to illegal graffiti as part of a program to tackle vandalism on our streets. The Grade 6 students condemned unsightly graffiti in a writing competition run by Frankston City Council as part of its Responsible Street Art initiative, with five youngsters being named the winners for their responses. Duke, from Frankston Primary School, wrote: “Graffiti can be beautiful. It can be a masterpiece. Yet mindless, illegal graffiti makes our streets look like we don’t care, it makes them look ugly. Illegal tagging is meaningless. Pointless.

Graffitiing is breaking more than one law. Firstly, sometimes the graffiti is making the environment look unpleasant and not presentable to the public. Secondly, you litter by leaving your used cans on the footpath and they eventually end up inside sea life. architecture and gorgeous streets. We must stop it before tourists go away and the citizens are in dismay. I don’t like graffiti and we must stop it. It ruins Frankston.” Abul, from Seaford Park Primary School, wrote: “Ban graffiti now!!! Graffiti is horrible. Nobody likes our beautiful city getting wrecked by people tagging our city. The only works that should be done by everyone is street art which I love. Tagging is not cool. I honestly think people do it to look tough. Well, they’re not.” Jemma, from Seaford Primary School, wrote: “I dislike the fact that people vandalize other people’s property. I also think that it’s a horrendous way to express yourself. Graffiti makes me feel less secure, because it takes away the friendly environment. To me, street art can be beautiful, but they must first have permission from the owner.” The second part of the initiative invited students in grades 6-8 to produce creative street art. The winning pieces, which are on display in Wells Lane, were created by Mikayla Bailey and Montana Veness, from Rowellyn Park Primary School; Olivia Cornwall and Caitlin Ridgway (Ballam Park Primary School); Elizabeth Carvosso and Lily-Rose Frank (Kananook Primary School); Mya Ellingsen and Matthew Hodson (Monterey Secondary College); Liam www.franklyfrankston.com.au

important step in the fight against the scourge.

“It is great to see that these students are taking illegal graffiti seriously.” The Department of Justice and Regulation put up $25,000 for the art competition, while Melissa and Bridgette, from Melbourne Murals, shared their artistic talents with the students. JULY 2016

Woodleigh wins prestigious learning environment award Woodleigh School’s new Homesteads development has won the 2016 Learning Environments Australasia Award for best new construction/major facility. Principal Jonathan Walter said the award was an “outstanding result” for the school, especially considering the standard of competition within Australia and beyond. “Our Homesteads provide a home away from home for students at school,” Mr Walter said. “They blend social learning spaces with open-planned, flexible teaching spaces, and connect beautifully with our natural

environment. “This is an exceptional project, chiefly because the design team’s deep understanding of the school’s educational philosophy is manifest in every aspect of the Woodleigh Homesteads design. Woodleigh’s commitment to environmental education is visibly embedded in the environmental function of the buildings.” Mr Walter said the Woodleigh Homesteads were now part of a major research collaboration called Innovative Learning Environments and Teacher

Change, an Australian Research Council Linkage project valued at more than $1 million that will run over the next four years and will investigate the impact of new learning spaces within schools. “We believe that great education is more than just an excellent academic preparation for the future. A great education equips a student with life skills – resilience and independence. It provides an understanding of service, the building of a strong moral and ethical base, and the desire to make a contribution to the broader community. It’s the ability to work hard and give your best effort to everything that you do.”

A new transport venture has Frankston residents seeing red – in the best possible way. SkyBus, Melbourne’s CBD-to-airport express bus service, has taken over the Frankston and Peninsula Airport Shuttle route and will ferry customers between Frankston and the airport at a fraction of the cost of a taxi. SkyBus director Adam Begg was born and raised in Frankston and understands the importance of an easy, convenient and value-for-money airport shuttle service. As well as the free Wi-Fi, customer support and corporate rates SkyBus is known for, Mr Begg said the company would be continuously improving the service for its customers by introducing more benefits, including a

“kids travel free” policy, online ticket purchasing, smartphone ticket access, and a “significant increase” in reliability and services. A SkyBus journey from Frankston to the airport will cost $38 one-way, about a quarter of the cost of a taxi. Frankston state Labor MP Paul Edbrooke welcomed the announcement. “Improved and cost-effective transport services, particularly to the airport, are incredibly important to Frankston residents and those of the outer southeastern suburbs. SkyBus has an excellent reputation for providing outstanding services to its passengers, and we look forward to seeing what it has in store for the Frankston route over the coming months.” You can follow this announcement on social media with #SkyBusFrankston. Help Ahmed

reach Rio

Anglers should find it much easier to get among the snapper this year when a $1.7 million upgrade of the Olivers Hill Boat Ramp is completed. The Kelly family is holding a fundraiser to help send Ahmed to the Rio Paralympics. Iraqi-born Ahmed is representing Australia in swimming, and the family would like to join him. So they’re holding a Brazilian Fiesta at Baxter Barn on Saturday, July 30, from 7-11.30pm, at 85 Sages Rd, Baxter, to raise money for tickets and accommodation. Tickets are $70 and include food, entertainment, wine and beer. Email info@ baxterbarn.com.au for all ticketing information.

( 12

The work will include construction of a 50m jetty between new boat ramps, improving boat access to the bay. “The upgrade will take some of the demand off the main waterfront boat ramp and will allow 10-12 vessels to be tied to the jetty at any one time,” says Frankston Mayor James Dooley. Work has started and is expected to be completed in October ahead of the snapper season. The upgrade is one of several major developments taking place to cement Frankston Waterfront’s place as one

of the city’s prime attractions. Construction of the Frankston Yacht Club has been completed, and a permanent home for Sand Sculpting Australia has moved a step closer with a planning application about to be lodged with Frankston City Council. Over the next few months the yacht club and the new restaurant and café operators will complete their fit-outs before opening to the public. “The club not only includes a public café and significant decking overlooking the beach, it hosts a first-floor restaurant with enviable views over Port Phillip Bay, 80 carparking spaces and facilities for the yacht club and rescue boats,” Cr Dooley says. Sand Sculpting Australia has become synonymous with the Frankston

Waterfront and has been a huge driver of tourism, with more than a million visitors since the first annual exhibition in 2007. It has injected more than $100 million into the region’s economy and provides more than 50 casual summer jobs each year, so a year-round operation would bring increased benefits to Frankston and the Peninsula. “While there is still due process to follow, we have been happy to work collaboratively with its operators, Sandstorm Events, to discuss opportunities for the event’s continued success,” Cr Dooley says. “Frankston City is in demand. These works will ensure that the waterfront remains viable for everyone to enjoy, now and into the future.”

If anyone doubts there’s a world of difference between illegal graffiti and street art, they need only check out some of Sheldon Headspeath’s stunning work. Sheldon is an artist in the purist sense of the word; it’s just his pieces are more likely to be on concrete than canvas. Commissioned by councils, schools and business owners, they are about as far from unsightly tags as it’s possible to get. “From fish and chip shops to gyms, boats to trucks, anything with a surface is a good canvas,” he says. “We always have new commission work on the go. At the moment we have a Mexican-themed wall on the Mornington Peninsula, a few cafes with different themes - one a Buddha and the other a grey tone mixed cityscape/street scene - and another gym with a basketball scene to be done, just to mention a few. We’re always up for more.” Sheldon runs State of the Art 3199 with his wife, Karlie, and their children Lucas and Miker. It’s a specialised art supply business focusing on legal street art for muralists working on commissions, and it opened last December. “Karlie and I have thought about starting an art supply business for 10 years or so and thought the time was right. We are selling everything ‘street art’, from paints, pens, inks and canvas to books, magazines,

( 16

clothing and music. We also run a home and garden business that definitely helps us get through.” Born, raised and living in Frankston, Sheldon says he’s always had a keen interest in all forms of art, whether on paper, canvas or concrete. “I have been an artist for 20-plus years, starting as a kid that loved to draw. I was infatuated with painting of any sort. At the moment I’m on a slight hiatus from an airbrush course.” Sheldon and Karlie have also just taken on a workshop for a select few kids at Westpark in Hastings through the Good Shepherd Wallaroo Community Centre, teaching them the responsible use of aerosols and creating a positive environment through art, painting fences with murals and cleaning up part of the community. The state of street art is very healthy indeed. BIG HELP FOR SMALL BUSINESS

Frankston’s shifting perceptions Frankston’s electorate of Dunkley had the fastest growing economy of any Victorian federal electorate in the 2014-15 financial year, and a rapid improvement in unemployment figures has followed.

A report by SGS Economics & Planning shows Dunkley topped the state with economic growth of 3.6 per cent, followed closely by the neighbouring electorate of Isaacs, with 3.1 per cent growth. The Carrum Downs-Seaford Industrial Precinct bridges those two electorates and has driven growth against the national trend of manufacturing precincts being in decline. According to Frankston Mayor James Dooley, the precinct currently generates $2.8 billion a year - up 40 per cent since 2011. “As a result, manufacturing now accounts for around 4000 jobs in our municipality, making it our third largest employer after health and retail.” Frankston City Council’s work in attracting new businesses has been built around four pillars: shifting perceptions, identifying new investment markets, boosting awareness of business opportunities and positioning for the future. The result of this work can be seen in unemployment figures, with Frankston’s rate dropping from 8.3 per cent in the March 2015 quarter to just 6.1 per cent in the corresponding quarter in 2016.

( 18

“Recent major projects like Peninsula by the Bay, Frankston Hospital, PARC, Frankston Yacht Club, Frankston Park Function Centre and South East Water are already providing tens of millions of dollars per year in economic output. Once you factor in current and pipeline projects such as the Frankston station precinct redevelopment, Frankston Private Hospital, Peninsula Private Hospital, Chisholm Institute redevelopment and multiple retail and apartment developments in the Frankston city centre, we have more than $550 million of major projects completed, under way or in preparation.” There has been another “incredibly important” factor in Frankston’s improved economic fortunes - the city’s emergence as a desired place to live, bringing new people to the region and providing a significant economic boost. “We have sought to change the conversation about Frankston. There is now hope and enthusiasm. In terms of real estate, Frankston was the second most searched suburb in Victoria last year, and we have recorded the lowest proportion of empty rental houses in Melbourne at just 1.1 per cent. That is clear proof that perceptions of Frankston are changing, people are choosing to live and work here and the growth and job figures show we are experiencing the eco-nomic benefits of that.”

Anyone who has ever considered starting their own small business will be able to find answers to all their questions during next month’s Small Business Festival. The state-wide festival runs from August 1-31, and in Frankston the focus will be very much on start-ups, with Frankston City Council planning a series of workshops covering all aspects of getting a small business off the ground. Start-Up Super Session (August 2) is the first workshop and will be split over two sessions (6-7pm and 7-9pm). Victoria’s Small Business Commissioner will provide tips on turning a great idea into a successful business, as well as avoiding the traps of commercial disputes. Marketing For Start-Ups (August 4) will include practical marketing applications, from brand selection and getting the basics right to first-time marketing as an investment and online strategies that work. Commercialising Your New Idea (August 9, 6-9pm; August 11, 6-8.30pm) examines why many great ideas and inventions never graduate to a fully-fledged business. Over the two sessions, participants will be given tips on developing a strategy to take their idea to market. Ten Free Things You Can Do Online For Start-Ups (August 23, 6-8pm) will teach you how to use 10 free online tools designed to make growing your business easier and more cost-effective. Chris Farmer had been making his own beer for several years when he and a mate had the discussion that every home brewer eventually has: “What if we put some money together and gave this an actual crack.” Two years later, Chris’s Seaford-based Mr.Banks Brewing Co. has just produced and distributed its first batch, opting for cans and kegs rather than glass. Why? For a start it’s better for the beer, says Chris, because no light or oxygen – “The two killers of beer”- can enter a can. Canned beer also has a better shelf life, chills more quickly, is easier to ship … “and we think cans are way cooler”. Chris, 30, was working 60 hours a week in a job he “didn’t have the slightest interest in” when he decided to have “an actual crack” at brewing. “I had a partner early on but things changed. Now I do pretty much the lot. My wife, Penny, is an

“We’ve had a lot of help along the way, especially from other local breweries who were happy to share information and insights. All in all I would say we are joining what would have to be the most supportive and helpful community - the craft beer family - and we couldn’t be more excited about it.

That should be easier when a canning machine arrives from Canada this month. The initial batch of beer was distributed in kegs, but by early to mid-August Chris hopes to have the first cans on the shelves.

“Everyone seems to be enjoying our first beer (Pier

Addicted? Maybe it’s time to get help.

Overcoming your addiction The depiction of a “hooded ice addict hiding in a dark corner” is a stereotype that addictions coach Simon Williams says is very unhelpful in recognising when someone is in the grip of addiction.

“If we wanted to paint a picture of the most prolific form of addiction, we could highlight a person drinking at home, or constantly with a screen in front of them, or even the classic workaholic who is hooked on the adrenalin rush of success,” says Simon. “Addiction occurs when a person is hooked on some activity or interest that they feel compelled to indulge in. Most addicts are already saying ‘no’ (but) their best intentions mostly dissipate in the cravings they www.franklyfrankston.com.au

constantly battle.” Simon, a qualified alcohol and drugs counsellor, certified life coach and minister, helps people from all walks of life overcome their addictions – from drugs and alcohol to gambling, work, sexual behaviour and risk-taking – with a range of courses and workshops tailored to the individual. STUDENTS ON AN OBSTACLE COURSE

Two Flinders Christian College students have lent their design skills to a new parkour area at Ballam Park.

Isaac James and Levi Gould had direct input in the design consultation process as Frankston City Council prepares for a $1 million upgrade of the Cranbourne Rd playground. “We’re super excited to have this new facility to be able to do what we love,” Isaac said. “All the new equipment will be great in getting more kids and teenagers outside and being more active and social.” When work is completed in October, parkour enthusiasts will be able to run, jump and climb in an obstacle approach throughout an urban environment, including low intersecting concrete walls of varying heights, monkey bars and climbing frames The park’s upgrade will also include the removal of ageing equipment and the installation of new

features, the refurbishment of the existing fort, the installation of a larger flying fox (the existing one will be moved to another playground) and the creation of a scooter track to allow young children to learn to scoot and cycle in a safe environment. Frankston Mayor James Dooley said the work was part of the council’s $4.6 million investment in Frankston’s playgrounds, parks and recreation areas. Seaford’s Keast Park is getting a $300,000 upgrade, including a natural space with sandpits, giant boulders, rolling timber walkways and a mega-swing, and designs are being finalised for work on the Frankston Waterfront playground, with new picnic facilities, shelters and play equipment. “By investing in high-quality playgrounds we are providing a great location for families to come together and for children of all ages to make new friends as they explore, learn and develop in a fun environment,” Cr Dooley said.

BY TERRI LEE FATOUROS

Frankston blues man Geoff Achison has returned with Another Mile, Another Minute, his first studio album in almost a decade. Recorded in Melbourne with co-producers Rob and Ben Harwood, this project features Achison with his band The Souldiggers - Gerry Pantazis on drums and Little River Band ex-members Roger McLachlan on bass and Mal Logan on keyboards - and with help from some heavy-hitting musical friends, including Chris Wilson, Lloyd Spiegel, Shannon Bourne, Susie Ahern and Steve Romig. You can expect plenty of blues, country, rock, funk, folk and even classical flavours on this latest offering. Achison and his Souldiggers have been producing outstanding yet uniquely blues/roots tunes for well over 20 years. However, it’s Acho’s rich, husky vocals and diverse original compositions that morph the likes of blues, jazz, funk, rock and reggae, transporting punters into an exhilarating alternative parallel that transcends into that mystical place only brilliant musicians traverse. Achison tours the US, England and Europe regularly but currently we have our boy back in Frankston, so now is probably a good time to catch him and his band before he heads back overseas in a couple of months. Meanwhile, Achison’s wife, Michelle, has written a children’s book called Bruno’s Blues, which will be launched at the same time as the new album. It www.franklyfrankston.com.au

Photo by Angelfoto tells the story of a guitar-picking blues hound and follows his adventures as he learns to play in the style of the old blues masters - a story not unlike Achison’s own journey. Another Mile, Another Minute will be launched at

the Spotted Mallard, 314 Sydney Rd, Brunswick, on Friday, July 22, at 9pm. Tickets: $25 via www.moshtix For more info on Geoff Achison visit: www. geoffachison.com JULY 2016

St Augustine’s is a welcoming, safe environment where students’ well rounded education is paramount. Half of our students top 30% of the state - a learning culture money cannot buy.

WHY I AM SO PROUD TO BE A STUDENT OF FRANKSTON HIGH SCHOOL I am extremely proud to be a Frankston High School student and grateful for the opportunities provided. In my opinion, Frankston High School is without doubt one of the most outstanding state schools. We achieve remarkable success in a multitude of areas, including academic results, music, sport, the arts and language. It is a school where teachers care for us whilst inspiring students to be the best they can be. I have been privileged to be involved in varied activities that have challenged me physically, emotionally and academically. I have grown as an individual and developed valuable skills and understandings that I believe will serve me well in the future. I encourage all students from year 7 to 12 to embrace the broad and varied extra-curricular programs. The school has a wonderful, strong, positive learning culture established by past students, teachers and www.franklyfrankston.com.au

parents through the celebration of group and individual success. As my educational journey continues next year where I hope to study Medicine at the University of Melbourne, I will reflect on my time at Frankston High School with pride and fond memories. I will miss everything about the school, particularly the strong friendships and my teachers. Monique Burt Frankston High School

YOUNG

PASSION

for paws

When work begins this month on upgrading Young St, it will signal the beginning of a massive project designed to transform the heart of Frankston. The $63 million revitalisation of the Frankston station precinct will unfold over the next three years and will, the State Government says, “transform the precinct into a safer, more modern place of business and activity and grow investment towards the long-term vision of a revitalised Frankston city centre”. It will include rebuilding the station itself, consolidating buses on Young St and upgrading the subway.

Pawsome Paws is much more than just a business for owner Tara Bashford. “My passion is all about animals,” Tara says. “I am the biggest animal lover.”

Pawsome Paws offers a range of friendly dog grooming services anywhere from a tidy up to a full groom at great and affordable prices. *Pensioner discounts apply!

( 28

At Pawsome Paws you can be sure your dog is in the best possible hands. As well as a full range of services - grooming, nail trimming, flea rinse, maintenance grooming, ear plucking, clipping, and a warm hydro bath – Tara also offers a pensioners’ discount. Pawsome Paws is also launching a mobile service within the next few weeks so she’ll be able to come to you. PAWSOME PAWS M: 0433 719 445 E: groomingbytaraj@gmail.com

Stage one of the project is the $13 million Young St upgrade, which is expected to be completed by next March and will include a high-quality pedestrian streetscape, better carparking access and management, new plazas and improved safety measures. Frankston Mayor James Dooley said the “positive long-term economic, environmental and social benefits” of the precinct transformation went “right to the core” of the council’s Frankston Metropolitan Activity Centre Structure Plan. “This key project has been at the top of the Frankston community’s priority list for many years, with the development of Young St being an exciting first step towards changing the face of Frankston,” Cr Dooley said. “Young St is a very important gateway in our city centre, and we look forward to it being transformed

AT HEART into a hub for our community members and visitors to meet, shop and enjoy spending leisure time in.” As part of a broad plan to realise the long-known potential of Frankston, the Young St upgrade will support other imminent private sector developments, including the expansion of Chisholm TAFE and the station rebuild. These major projects will boost the local economy and increase the liveability of the city centre through more housing, education and employment options. “Residential apartments will bring benefits to the city, including an increase in safety in the Frankston centre with the space activated 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”

It was quite an achievement for owner Yvens de Camargo and his team, and a café that began life as a coffee cart before graduating to a shipping container in White St Mall. “I had to wheel the cart out every morning at 5.30am and wheel it back in at 6pm every night, which was tough when it was cold and wet,” Yvens says. “The container was a progression from the cart.” Yvens opened Fresh St@rt Organic Café on July 19, 2014, to educate people about coffee and pursue the Fair Trade ethic – “I saw what was happening overseas and wanted to do the right thing,” he says. It quickly became a magnet for artists, who would exhibit there for no charge, as well as coffee aficionados drawn to as many as seven varieties on offer. Not content with just the one café, however, Yvens also runs www.franklyfrankston.com.au

It didn’t take long for Fresh St@rt Organic Café to make an impact – within six months of opening it had been named the Australian-New Zealand Fair Trade Café of the Year.

Charlwood’s Café at Frankston Library as well as his own not-forprofit record label, Fresh St@rt Sounds. Music plays a major role in Yvens’s life – he has played in bands in his native Brazil and in Australia after arriving here in 1978 - and he encourages musicians to perform in the mall during the Wells St markets every Thursday. He also puts on monthly concerts outside the library, having spent almost $10,000 on instruments performers can use, and is hoping to arrange a concert at the end of the year that he will record on a CD that the musicians involved can use to promote themselves. “I’d like to see more entertainment to liven up the city, to bring more people out and create more foot traffic, and I’d like to see people less fortunate given the chance to show their talents.” FRESH ST@RT ORGANIC CAFÉ A: White St Mall, Frankston CHARLWOOD’S CAFÉ A: 60 Playne St, Frankston M: 0437 480 253 FB: www.facebook.com/ freshstartorganicafe/

First choice for 41 years! Wells St, the hub of Frankston The $4.239 million upgrade of Wells St has been all but wrapped up, with major construction work complete and planting and the installation of street furniture to continue after hours to avoid inconvenience to traders and shoppers. The project, which was jointly funded by Frankston City Council and the State Government, was designed to improve pedestrian access and safety within Frankston’s premier retail and entertainment area and pave the way for future economic opportunities. Footpaths were widened and new paving placed to provide more space for kerbside trading and for people to shop, eat, relax and socialise. Additions include high-quality sculptural seating and feature lighting, more trees and new planter beds. Over the following pages we showcase some of the fabulous places in the Wells St precinct.

arts events leisure Sandy Eliadis is a firm believer in the therapeutic value of art. She was so amazed at how it helped her that she decided to invite others to experience it. Sandy began by offering resin painting workshops from her Om Creative Cave in Carrum Downs, an “amazing” space where anyone can come and enjoy the non-judgemental company of likeminded people in a safe, relaxed and nurturing environment. “I have had a lot of wonderful teachers who have been an absolute inspiration and blessing to me, and I want to inspire others to have a go. If I can do it, anyone can do it.” Sandy’s resin workshops are intimate affairs. She works with only one or two people at a time, or a maximum of six if smaller pieces are involved, so each person is assured of individual attention. Occasionally a guest artist will be on hand to demonstrate his or her techniques. “They are lessons but I want them to be fun. I want it to be about the journey rather than the destination.”

( 44

The “destination” is not just your own piece of stunning art but the feeling of accomplishment, of emotions released and purpose found. There are more wonderful classes on the way, including airbrushing, mixed media, intuitive painting, spirit guide drawing, vision boards, beginners’ workshops and monthly craft classes. Sandy is also keen to offer workshops for children and is looking at setting up meditation classes, where people can come along and enjoy a meditation session before they paint. And she wants to devote one day a week to a “fun day, where you can paint with other people, crank up the music and just have fun”.

Everything, even morning tea and lunch, is supplied at the workshops – “just bring your inspiration and an apron” – and Sandy’s daughter, Zoe – “my right-hand woman” – takes bookings, organises the workshops, and helps set up and clean up. So take a break from life’s pressures, enter the Om Creative Cave and nurture your creative soul. You’ll be glad you did. OM CREATIVE CAVE A: Factory 3/40 Access Way, Carrum Downs M: 0409 776 948

The Tuscan-inspired castle was a great setting for the gallery, but directors David and Sharyn Wemyss-Smith are keen to create a brighter, fresher space that’s inviting to both artists and visitors. The Manyung Gallery Group has built a reputation as one of Melbourne’s largest and longest running contemporary art organisations with galleries in Mt Eliza, Sorrento, and Malvern. The new boutique gallery will stock the same artists and artwork Manyung is known for, as well as introducing new contemporary painters and sculptors. To support the new gallery, Manyung has developed an art warehouse in Progress St, Mornington, where larger artworks will be housed and displayed. “We’ve found more and more that people want a hero piece in their home accompanied by smaller complementary artworks. This space allows us to showcase artwork across a range of scales,” Sharyn says. Manyung has experienced significant growth in the past 12 months, with the Sorrento and Malvern galleries both increasing in size. The group also has a mobile art service that delivers artwork for onsite assessment at clients’ homes and offices throughout Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula. “For us it’s about creating an experience for our visitors,” Sharyn says. “We aren’t selling a piece of artwork; we are providing joy and emotion through art. It’s really important that our clients are confident knowing that they can source the perfect artwork through us.” Everything we love about Frankston, fresh every month

THE BFG

Showing Hoyts Wells St Frankston First published in 1982, Roald Dahl’s classic novel is brought to the big screen for the first time after 25 years in development. The BFG tells the story of Sophie (newcomer Ruby Barnhill), who is plucked from her bed in an orphanage by a 24-foot giant and whisked away to Giant Country. This giant, however, is strictly vegetarian, more in need of a friend than a feed, although the same can’t be said of the other nine 50-foot anthropophagus giants residing in this mysterious land. Weta Digital’s four-time Oscar-winning senior visual effects supervisor Joe Letteri, with the talents of Jermaine Clement, Bill Hader and Academy Awardwinner Mark Rylance (as the titular BFG), beautifully utilises performance capture technology across both practical and virtual sets. Director Steven Spielberg, shooting his first live-action 3D feature, has crafted a film that retains the heart of Dahl’s original story while delivering an authentic cinema experience to newcomers. Out of the shadows

The US dance company Pilobolus is bringing its acclaimed production Shadowland to Frankston next month. Fantastic shapes created by the dancers’ silhouettes are projected on to screens to tell the story of a teenage girl who is transported to a surreal world by the shadows lurking behind her bedroom wall. With a script by Steven Banks (CatDog, SpongeBob SquarePants) and an original score by musician and film composer David Poe, Shadowland has been performed around the world to more than a million people. Pilobolus was formed in New Hampshire in 1971 by a group of Dartmouth College students and has appeared on Broadway, at the 2007 Academy Awards, on the TV shows Oprah and Ellen and in more than 65 countries. Coming to Frankston Arts Centre for one night only on Tuesday, August 16, at 7.30pm, Shadowland is one show you simply must see. INDIE MUSOS CONNECT TO GRID Efforts to build a supportive, non-competitive community of independent musicians could set the Peninsula’s indie music scene alight.

that many of the artists he was working with were eager to get as much information as possible on how to manage and grow their careers.

GRID (Grass Roots Indie Development) is inviting emerging artists and bands from the outer southeastern, Frankston and Peninsula region to take part in its 2016 series of mentoring workshops, live performances and recording sessions. Melbourne-based producer Ariel Blum established GRID with Ayesha Mehta, the co-founder of Taiwan’s Red Room, after it became apparent

“I’d found that these artists were super hungry for new opportunities and I wanted to create a space where they had access to this information in a personalised fashion,” Ariel says. “Ayesha and I wanted to create a non-competitive space where artists are encouraged to build a community among themselves and grow together. “When you look at the way music scenes have come to be, it has so often been numerous bands coming up together. We want to see GRID do the

same thing. We want to enable artists to have the confidence and knowledge to go into the world with their record and give themselves the best shot at making an impact locally.” Artists who live in the region and perform their own material are invited to apply before July 24, after which eight will receive one fully produced track from El Perro Productions, two paid gigs at Frankston’s Pelly Bar and The Village Green in Mulgrave, and a weekend of one-on-one mentoring with music industry professionals from Music Victoria.

“We’d like to see the eight selected artists who join the series to flourish and build new and exciting opportunities for themselves, and we encourage all the artists who apply to be involved to come to the shows, make new connections and build on the scene within their region. The shows are all happening locally and this gives the artists the best chance to involve their own community. “There is amazing talent in this region. We want to give these artists the same opportunity and access that their peers in the inner city have. “We’d like to also invite musicians whose first language may not be English to be involved. We’ve just launched a broad poster campaign in the region in English, Chinese, Hindi, Sudanese Arabic and Dari. Provided an artist writes and performs their

own material, we’d love them to be involved in the series by applying to be a performer.” Success stories have already emerged from previous GRID series. The Fabric, a nine-piece band “doing really amazing things in Melbourne”, had a song from GRID 2014 picked up by Qantas inflight radio and went on to play the St Kilda Festival. Natalia Hayden (AKA Straythread) had one of her songs nominated for the Independent Music Awards. “Outside of these more public outcomes, the response from all the artists involved was really positive,” Ariel says. “The environment gave them a chance to really focus on the particulars of their project with mentors who were totally committed to helping them get to where they wanted to go.” For details and GRID 2016 applications: www.gridseries.com.au GRID 2016 W: www.gridseries.com.au FB: facebook.com/ gridseriesmelbourne/ instagram: grid_series twitter: @gridseries

Boe Sapun Abstract Artist One of Boe Sapun’s favourite quotes comes from Picasso: “I paint objects as I think them, not as I see them.”

“This is precisely how I paint,” says the owner and director of Aspendale’s Écume Gallery. “I create tranquil paintings that evoke a feeling of floating or drifting into the realms of deep inner peace with an element of escapism.” Boe is an abstract expression artist with a background in visual merchandising. She began painting only a few years ago after being encouraged by an artist friend; when he took her painting to a gallery and it quickly sold, she knew she could pursue an art career. She held her first successful exhibition, Hydromancy, in 2014 and followed that with Pareidolia last year. Écume itself is a small, intimate gallery that was created from the studio of Bruce Earles, the artist widely acknowledged as having made a significant contribution to the contemporary Australian art movement. www.franklyfrankston.com.au

“It proudly retains the bespoke nature in its well-worn floors and subtle evidence of inspiration and creativity from paintsplattered walls,” Boe says. Its location on the beach side of the Nepean Highway gives it “incredible exposure to continuous traffic”, making it ideal to showcase the work of new and emerging artists as well as established contemporary art. Two of those emerging artists, Clare Rab Lynch and DB White, are collaborating for the first time for the exhibition Imperfect Harmony, from July 23-August 6. Lynch evokes whimsical and visual storytelling through anthropomorphic dancers, while White draws her inspiration from her environment, emulating shrouded skies, seascapes and lucid dreams. “The artists represent their art in their own unique way,” Boe says. Connecting with MatchWorks Frankston has given jobseeker Tom McGann a chance to showcase his passion for computers. Tom, 22, was born with a neuromuscular disorder and uses a wheelchair. He joined MatchWorks as a jobseeker in 2014 after completing his secondary schooling and TAFE Diplomas in web development and network engineering. MatchWorks worked with Tom to identify opportunities to follow his passion for Information Technology, and he secured a work trial at Dandenong’s Wooranna Park Primary School. Tom was more than happy to travel by taxi to and from the school, and enjoyed helping gifted students develop their computer skills and learning. The work trial soon turned into ongoing employment, and Tom has become a valued member of staff at Wooranna Park. Branding

your business Priscilla Cutter’s introduction to the Frankston area came as a result of her many bike rides up Olivers Hill and around Humphries Rd, where she fell in love with the views and the semi-rural lifestyle that reminded her of her childhood in the Dandenong Ranges. A qualified graphic designer now living in Frankston, Priscilla’s background in advertising and retail marketing has given LogoLogix the unique edge of creating an identity that is both visually appealing and has a marketing strategy combined.

EXPERTS IN ASSET FINANCE “It is imperative you seek the right Asset Finance advice. Your future depends on getting it right. Finance solutions to build your business.”

LogoLogix’s strategy is what Priscilla calls the “logo reno”. “It’s like the House Rules and Backyard Blitz of graphics whereby tired identities aren’t thrown out; the basis of the logo concept still exists, but it’s given a graphic makeover to refresh and revitalise your brand,” she says. “LogoLogix provides a cost-effective health check for your identity to bring all your graphic elements in line so your brand is remembered and your purpose is clear. There’s nothing more confusing to your market than the business card having one look, the ads another, the website another and the storefront yet another.” LogoLogix is situated in Sandringham Village, just opposite Sandringham station.
