Brooke’s life in the fast lane Brooke Hogan, 24, is one of Australia’s top models, she’s from Frankston and she has just been named the Female Ambassador for the 2017 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix (March 23-26). This ‘girl next door’ shot to prominence when she appeared on Australia’s Next Top Model 2013 and she now has more than half a million followers on social media. She spoke with Frankly Frankston about her meteoric rise, her new role and her love for Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula. Tell us where you grew up and what you love about the area. I am a Frankston girl born and bred and I love it. My parents still live there and I love going home to visit them. I went to Ballam Park Primary School and McClelland College in Frankston. I have always loved living on the Peninsula. They say home is where the heart is and I believe that 100 per cent. There are so many things I love and the list is continuing to grow. There are some great new little cafés and shops but my favourite thing about the area would have to be that it is where my family are. My boyfriend, Myles, lives in Portsea so I would say I spend 50 per cent of my time in Melbourne and the other 50 on the Peninsula. Name your favourite café, restaurant and beach on the Peninsula? I have two favourite cafés - 6 Nutrition in Frankston (they have the best acai bowls ever) and also Store Fifteen in Mornington (really healthy and organic foods with delicious www.franklyfrankston.com.au

smoothies). Favourite restaurants would be DOC in Mornington and Hotel Sorrento in Sorrento. Favourite beach would be Shelley Beach in Portsea - the water is super clean, there is a beautiful view on the walk down, a little pier to walk down as well and it isn’t too crowded … unless it’s peak summer time. Do you use Peninsula locations in your Instagram photos? Yes, all the time. What does it mean to be named the 2017 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix Female Ambassador? It is a role that I have had my eye on for quite a while now and I am over the moon that the opportunity has come around. The Grand Prix is such an iconic time for Australia and we are so lucky to host such a prestigious event here in Melbourne. It’s going to be an actionpacked exciting few days and I am thrilled to showcase Melbourne in all its glory. What is your message to young women, particularly local girls, who might wish to dream big and follow in your footsteps? I could write an essay on this. My advice would be, don’t doubt yourself. If you want something, you need to work as hard as you can to get there. You can’t just sit around waiting for something to happen. It doesn’t work like that. Figure out what it is you want to do, get up and go get it. For Grand Prix tickets, go to www.grandprix. com.au/tickets MARCH 2017

Women’s team to make its mark It would be fitting if the Frankston Dolphins Junior Football Club was able to field a senior women’s team in this its 50th year – and there is every indication it will do exactly that. With about a month to go before the launch of the AFL South East Women’s Football League, club spokesman Paul Wright is confident of getting the numbers to put a team on the park. Last year about 10 women answered the club’s call for expressions of interest, and women are turning up to weekly training sessions. It’s also likely the club will elevate a couple of players from last year’s under-18s. Given that other clubs have had last-minute player registrations to get them over the line, it’s looking very good for the Dolphins. Paul says the interest in and growth of women’s footy in the past few years has been “amazing”, and has obviously been boosted by the launch of the AFL women’s competition. “We used to have a couple of girls playing junior footy in our mixed teams and it went from that to a fully-fledged under-18 side and an under-13 side last year. Our under-13s won the Grand Final and our under-18s got pipped by a couple of points in their Grand Final. “This year we’ve got under-18s, under-15s www.franklyfrankston.com.au

and under-12s – so we’ll have girls across the whole spread of age groups, which is incredible going from three or four girls playing in mixed comp a few years back.” For the Dolphins, a stand-along junior club that formed in 1967 when Frankston entered the VFA, developing a senior women’s team – and potentially a senior men’s team down the track – is a natural progression. “We had two girls’ teams last year and we’ll have three this year across all age groups, so the natural extension is to develop a senior women’s team. It keeps the fabric within the club; otherwise the players splinter off and you lose that connectivity. “It’s the same for our boys - they get to the under-17s or under-18s and there’s nowhere for them to go. What we’re trying to do is build that pathway for them.” Age and lack of experience are no barriers – the Dolphins already have a 32-year-old who is returning to the game after a few years, and Paul expects other clubs will have players who are fairly new to footy. “So for anyone who hasn’t played before or hasn’t played for a long time, I think it’s open to all abilities.” If you’re interested in being a part of history, email dolphinsfc@optusnet. com.au or visit www.fdjfc.com.au for more details. Games on for Local Legends On your marks, get set, go nominate a Local Legend to carry the Queen’s Baton as it passes through Frankston on its way to the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. Frankston Council has launched a community nomination program to give residents of the city and the surrounding area the opportunity to carry the baton on the Frankston leg of its journey on Sunday, February 11, 2018. Baton-bearers are people of all abilities who inspire others to be great, showcasing their sporting achievements and community contribution to the world, and Mayor Brian Cunial said the Queen’s Baton Relay was “a rare opportunity to shine a

( 8

light on the people and places that help make our community truly great”. “We’re delighted for Frankston City to take part in this iconic sporting tradition and I encourage you to nominate a Local Legend you think deserves to be a baton-bearer, whether they’re an aspiring young person or someone who is already accomplished,” Cr Cunial said. The baton, which contains a message from The Queen, was scheduled to leave Buckingham Palace on March 13 on its 388-day, 230,000km journey through all 70 nations and territories of the

Commonwealth. After it arrives in Australia some 3800 people will carry the baton as it makes its way around the country, arriving in the Gold Coast on April 4 for the opening ceremony. The Games will be declared officially open when The Queen’s message is read aloud. The awards could not have come at a better time. On the eve of a 30-date UK/US tour and with his new album just released globally, Frankston bluesman Geoff Achison “pretty much scooped the pool” at the Chain Australian Blues Awards: Album of the Year for Another Mile, Another Minute; Song of the Year (I’m Gonna Ride); Producer of the Year (Geoff and father-and-son team Rob and Ben Harwood); Group of the Year (which his Souldiggers shared with the “fantastic” Justin Yap Band); and Artist of the Year. The awards justified Geoff’s attempt to take his music to the next level. “We were committed to making the best possible album, having learnt in the past that now and again because of budget constraints we would cut corners. We were trying as hard as we could to not do that and then found that it wasn’t getting completed because we were just running out of money.” So Geoff’s wife, Michelle, suggested crowdfunding to keep those corners intact. “When it was initially suggested I was a bit coy about it – I felt like it was asking people to give us a handout – but once we got into it I realised it’s not like that at all – you’re really appealing to your support network to get on board and be involved in the process.” Geoff would post regular updates on YouTube, playing demos of songs he and the band were working on. “I’ve never done that before; usually we keep all that stuff a secret as much as we possibly can because you really want people’s first hearing of a new song to be when it’s completed. So I had to drop some walls there and allow people to see into the inner workings of putting it together. But the response was fantastic. “Then I did about 20 different events around the place which were anything from house concerts to guitar lessons as people snapped up these little packages that Michelle offered, and it was actually really fun because I got to meet a lot of people and go to their houses and sit down and play a few tunes – it was great.

( 10

“For all the accolades we’ve got for the album, which is fantastic, the experience of the music for us is best when it’s live on stage and we’ve got an audience and we just have our own little party. I love it; it’s the greatest job in the world.” Everything we love about Frankston, fresh every month

High-rise development leads the way A landmark residential project proposed for Frankston could trigger a property boom. Peninsula Project Group says its Allure Bayside development, at 10-12 Davey St, will be first high-rise residential development in the Bayside/ Mornington Peninsula region, and with the area primed for growth it’s unlikely to be the last. The 14-storey development will include 77 one, two and threebedroom luxury apartments and penthouses above a single-level podium incorporating existing heritage buildings, with a four-level basement carpark below. One heritage façade will contain a gymnasium, golf and yoga room, the other incorporating café space with a garden terrace. “The hero of these apartments is the bay views from the Melbourne CBD to Sorrento,” a PPG spokesman said. “This sets Allure Bayside apart from other similar priced low-rise apartment buildings in the area. “Now is the time to invest in Frankston property, while property prices are still low, rental demand is high and property value is only just commencing its incline. The trick is to invest in areas that have not yet experienced their property ‘boom’. This is where property owners will make significant returns.” Forty-five per cent of the apartments have already been sold, mostly to owner-occupiers. Construction is forecast to start in May. Get your paddling arms in shape and get on board an event that’s about to redefine the concept of surfing for a good cause. On Saturday, April 1, the Mornington Peninsula surfing community will host a unique surf competition at Shoreham with a simple goal – to raise money for the Disabled Surfing Association’s Mornington Peninsula Branch (DSAMP). It doesn’t get much more community than this. Registrations are open and excitement is building, with the major prize a $2000 travel voucher from JetStar. All funds raised at the inaugural DSAMP Champs event will help fund DSAMP’s two annual events for surfers with disabilities, held at Pt Leo. The DSAMP Champs is no ordinary surfing competition. It’s designed to create the ultimate level playing field for all competitors. As organiser Rod Jones from The FirstReef Project team (essentially an organised group of local surfers with big hearts, looking for innovative ways to support surfers with disabilities) explains, all entrants will surf on identical boards – 10’ soft longboards - and wait ‘til you hear about how you can win! “There are some very good surfers down here who would dominate the competition so we were very keen right from the start to make sure it wasn’t a normal www.franklyfrankston.com.au

competition,” Rod explains. “We’ve come up with a fun concept where it’s a team competition, each team has four surfers, and so long as all team members paddle out, catch one wave and stand up, your team qualifies for the prize draw.” So yes, the winning team, plus second and third prizes, will ultimately be drawn from a hat. Maladiction Longboarders (a club of devoted local surfers - www.maladiction.org) came up with the prize draw idea and will run the event; Jetstar is on board as the major sponsor via its Community Grant Fund; Trigger Bros are donating the second prize (a Trigger Bros Surf Pack) and third prize is dinner for four at Stillwater at Crittenden, donated

by Peninsula Speech Pathology Services. There are also a bunch of fabulous and fun minor prizes:, for the highest team score, longest noseride, best wipeout, most outrageous manœuvre, best costumes, paddle race winner and beach volleyball winner. The minor prizes include an iPad from Telstra Frankston, wine packs, beer packs, a surf wear pack from Bass Surfboards, and a Gonadman pack from Mark Sutherland! Entry is $200 per team, register at www.firstreef. weebly.com or ring Rod on 0438 458 064, and for more on the DSAMP visit www.disabledsurfers. org/vic/morning-peninsula-branch MARCH 2017

Fusion brings hope and new life “I now have life - not life as in I get up in the morning and do my daily things and go to bed at night, but I now have a good life with hope and a future.”

Since being encouraged to improve her health and take up sports, she is also studying to become a PE teacher and is now giving back to the Fusion community as a mentor to other young girls.

Fusion resident Jane* is testament to the youth and community organisation’s success in strengthening the lives of young people through a community-based response of education, accommodation, supporting and sharing of life.

This is the heart of Fusion’s work - to bring life to its fullest. Fusion seeks to provide opportunities for young people to discover who they are and realise their true potential through reconciliation, transformation and restoration.

Located in the former Army Barracks in Mount Martha, Fusion’s programs seek to connect young people to networks in the community and engage them with a wider sense of belonging and achievement. By providing early interventions to youths within its program, Fusion seeks to address many issues that trigger long-term homelessness.

Fusion’s fundraising dinner, Feast for Life, will be held on Saturday, March 18, from 6.30pm at Toorak College. Tickets are $60 or $550 for a table of 10; email Steph.Byrne@fusion.org.au or phone 5974 1442. * Name changed to protect her identity

With the support of Fusion, Jane’s life was transformed. She learnt how to live with others harmoniously - a process that involved managing conflict, becoming aware of the impact of her own actions, and reconciling differences – and with mediation support this allowed her to ultimately restore the relationship with her mother.

Choir on song for first Asian tour Can you say “Llanfairpwyllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch” in one breath? No? Well, don’t worry, it’s not a requirement for joining the Australian Welsh Male Choir. In fact, only six of the Frankston-based choir’s 60 members can speak much Welsh at all, so it’s probably fortunate that most of its repertoire is in English. What is important, however, is a love of camaraderie and singing. And possibly travel – the choir is currently on its first tour of Asia, visiting Taiwan, China and Hong Kong for a series of performances including concerts on the Great Wall of China, in Shanghai and in Frankston’s Sister City of Wuxi. In Hong Kong the choir will take part in a joint concert with the Hong Kong Welsh Male Voice Choir. Since its formation in 1974 as the Frankston Welsh Male Choir it has toured overseas many times and chalked up several milestones along the way. In 1983 the choir was invited to join the Association of Welsh Choirs and became the first choir outside Wales to be accorded that honour. The following year it toured the UK, where it became the first choir outside Wales to sing at the 1000 Voice Festival at the Royal Albert Hall, and in 1988 it was invited back to the festival to perform solo - the only choir to have done so. In 2000, the choir travelled to Wales and England to yet again represent Australia at the massed choir concert in Cardiff. It toured Wales, Ireland and England in 2004, 2012 and 2015 and New Zealand’s North Island in 2008. Closer to home the choir has performed at the Sydney Opera House and

( 18

regularly performs in Melbourne and throughout Victoria as well as singing to assist various charitable appeals. In October it will join 14 other choirs performing in Wollongong as part of the Male Choir Association of Australia before heading off to Scotland, Wales and England in October next year. The choir includes members from Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula as well as Berwick, Cranbourne, Wheelers Hill, Noble Park and Dingley, and new members are always welcome. It rehearses at Baxter Village every Monday at 7pm, and the initial audition consists of simply singing Happy Birthday to determine which section of the choir new members would be suitable for: first tenor, second tenor, baritone or bass. About a quarter of the choir’s repertoire is in Welsh and the majority of members learn the words by phonetics; the Welshmen in the choir will assist new members with pronunciation, and there are tapes and CDs available to help as well. Anyone interested in joining is invited to come along to a rehearsal, or phone 0425 725 525 or email awmcsecretary@gmail.com for more information. And to get a taste of what the choir is all about, you can also get along to Kirks Hotel on the Esplanade in Mornington on the last Wednesday of each month for Singing In The Pub - an evening of fun, fellowship and of course singing in the traditional Welsh style at 8pm. Entry is free, no bookings are required, and meals and drinks are available at bar prices. All welcome. Oh, and that tongue-twister at the top? It means “Saint Mary’s Church in the hollow of the white hazel near a rapid whirlpool and the Church of St Tysilio of the red cave”. Kingston might seem an unlikely source for a blues and jazz sensation, but The Jackson Four are making plenty of waves around the world. What’s perhaps even more surprising is that it’s all being run from a tiny office in a family home in Chelsea. Kingston resident, music and events small business owner Peter Jackson and his blues jazz quartet The Jackson Four are enjoying success from Mozambique to Malaysia, Brisbane to New Orleans, The Netherlands to South America, with their CDs and online digital releases featuring regularly on radio shows and in music publications. A highpoint so far has been the band’s November 2015 UK blues and jazz radio success with their debut CD, Love the Life, reaching No.17 on

the British blues charts, followed by nominations for UK Blues CD 2015. That’s no mean feat when you’re up against some of the greatest names in international blues and jazz music. To follow up on this success especially in the UK, where radio presenters and fans of the band alike have repeatedly demanded a tour - Peter undertook a promotional visit to the UK last August to lay the groundwork for a possible future tour. This resulted in radio interviews and invitations to perform with top UK blues and jazz musicians at some of London’s iconic music venues in Soho and Covent Garden, including the legendary Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club.

With more people visiting the area, new customers are calling into the store because an outfit in the window has caught their eye or because they are pleasantly surprised to see a shop like Wendy and Annie’s in Seaford.

Wendy and Annie also stock ‘button jewellery’, which is always popular, and they are expecting a delivery of new colours and designs in the next week. So do come and visit them and have a look for yourself; their summer stock is still on sale for another few weeks, with new autumn and trans-seasonal stock arriving every few days. They look forward to seeing you and meeting you.

Although the weather is still delightfully warm, autumn is here, and with that comes new clothes, new colours, new footwear, scarves and jewellery. You’ll find cotton knits in rust, magenta, navy and royal blue, berry, oatmeal, khaki and black, popular Refuge Joggers in grey, fawn and khaki, lots of tops

Before you throw out those old ties, trying imagining them as a dress. Or that pile of rags as a handbag. That’s what recycled artist Tina Strafford is calling on people to do with It’s Our Rubbish – an exhibition of wearable art that opens in July.

Tina, who runs the not-for-profit business Revamped Jewellery, was chatting with another artist Mara Requiman from Frank, the Frankston Regional Artisans’ Network, when the concept was born. “She was eating her lunch and she said ‘Look at this; everything’s wrapped in plastic; what if we could challenge the community to create actually useable things that could be worn’.

Entry is $20 to cover the costs of staging the exhibition, and there are prizes up for grabs. Tina is also keen for sponsors to come on board so even more prizes can be offered. For more details and entry forms, or for sponsorship information, phone Tina on 0407 561 333, email artatak4wellnes@optusnet.com.au or visit www.facebook.com/itsourrubbish

“It was just a couple of artists sitting together thinking ‘What can we do to excite the community and challenge the community into stop putting that in the bin, and let’s turn it into something we can wear or we can sell’. And people embraced it – we had a launch a couple of Sundays ago and when people saw these dresses made out of ties they were ‘Oh my gosh, can we buy these?’ There were shoes, a handbag made out of rags – all sorts of things. Sometimes you just need someone to show you something outside the square and you go ‘Wow, that’s amazing – I can do that’.” It’s Our Rubbish Wearable Art Exhibition will be held at Cube 37 from July 10 to August 5, and the community is invited to create and exhibit their own wearable art. “We’re just trying to get the public – crafters, artists, anyone really – to put their thinking caps on and create something out of the rubbish that they find around themselves so it doesn’t end up in landfill … looking at it in a new light, revamping and making useful things out of it that you can sell so we don’t need to put in the rubbish bin.” Everything we love about Frankston, fresh every month

Little Studio provided the Booth Bus along with event photography, and owner Mel

Mornington Peninsula Weddings

The Mornington Peninsula has long been an ideal location for weddings and, now the word has spread, it has become one of the most popular destinations to tie the knot.

Every style of venue is here, spectacular gardens, picturesque wineries, scenic golf courses, country houses, beachside ceremonies, unique hotels, marquees for hire and more, catering for hundreds of guests or small intimate gatherings. Contributing to the day are an abundance of highly professional wedding suppliers, all located here, eager to arrange your ceremony, dress and pamper you, drive you, feed you, entertain you, make your day spectacular and then capture the memories as photos or video. Using local suppliers has great benefits with photographers who know the prime locations; hair and makeup at your fingertips; drivers who know the route; stylists and entertainers who know the venues; caterers, cake artists www.franklyfrankston.com.au

and florists who have delivered there before; bridal and menswear with elegant or casual styles. Everything required for a magical day is here – if you know where to find it, and so Mornington Peninsula Weddings was born. This group of local professional wedding suppliers was created a decade ago to help couples find everything they require. MPW is now supported by the shire and is recognised as the key association representing the local wedding industry. Since 2014 MPW has presented an annual Wedding Expo and seen it grow in popularity, with 2016 being spoken about as the best ever staged on the Peninsula. Mark the date in your calendar for this year’s MPW Expo on Sunday, June 4, 2017 at Mornington Racing Club. Obligatory registration for brides and grooms will open for this event on Monday, March 20, 2017. Check MPW’s peninsulaweddings.com.au and follow MPW on Facebook and Instagram.

Lucky and Nella are back Newsflash! Lucky and Nella Ferraro have returned to Lucky’s Deli + Café in Young St, Frankston.

THE ORIGINAL LUCKY IS BACK!

This much-loved husband and wife, who established the gourmet deli in the early 1980s and managed it together for 24 years, have taken over the reins again after a long break. For Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula, this is wonderful news. Lucky and Nella are passionate about Frankston, quality produce and excellent service. They are bursting with fresh ideas, new stock and a passion to return Lucky’s to its heyday. There’s a connection here that links back to Lucky and Nella’s history as immigrants in the 1970s. “We migrated to this country in the late 1970s from Italy and all we had was hand luggage made from cardboard,” Lucky explains. “Frankston adopted us. Frankston has been very good to us. We brought up two kids here and now we are back and hopefully Lucky’s Deli will prosper again.” The goal at Lucky’s Deli + Café is to www.franklyfrankston.com.au

Control of each blind is separate so you can enjoy your window views and soft diffused light during the day and have complete privacy and darkness at night - how handy is that! DCB’s roller blinds are custom manufactured in Melbourne and the decorator team can manufacture custom pelmets for you in matching fabrics to your blinds. The pelmets further increase your windows’ insulation and also conceal the blind hardware and componentry underneath, creating a complete finish.

Sound like the window covering solution you’ve been searching for? It’s easy to see why double roller blinds are becoming so popular as they meet the brief for so many homeowners. With a fairly mild summer and our gardens producing an abundance of beautifully ripe homegrown fruit and veggies, many of you may find you have more produce than you can use for your daily meals. This is where the real beauty of growing your own food begins to shine. Preserving. While there may be loads of meals you can prepare with your abundant crops of tomatoes, basil, zucchini, cucumbers, chillis, eggplant and capsicum, there are many preserving techniques to help you enjoy your plentiful supplies later in the year; pickling, freezing, dehydrating and bottling just to name a few. Tomatoes are easy. Making sauces, pastes and jams are on most homegrowers’ radars. But simply storing your whole or chopped tomatoes can allow much more flexibility for many months to come. And if you have planted a good crop (say 20-30 plants) you will likely have enough to take you close or

through to the next harvest in 2017. Abundant herbs can be quickly transformed into pestos, whacked in the freezer and thawed as required throughout the year for cooking or snacking. Zucchinis (and cucumbers) have well-earned reputations for overproducing with most people choosing to let them rot on the ground after getting sick of too many zucchini meals over summer. How often though have you wanted to use zucchini or cucumber when they are not in the garden though? Pickling both of these fruits in various ways is fantastic, as is making and freezing zucchini soups, slow cooking or dehydrating zucchini chips and juicing both if you still have too many. Eggplant and capsicum are always well enjoyed in many ways during the warm seasons, whether it’s cooked on the barbie, made into dips or just eaten raw. If enough is enough, then think about charring them and storing them in oil to be used all year as condiments and additions to a wide range of meals. And as for chillis, well if you have more than one good sized plant in this season you’ll likely be wondering what to do with the excess long after the plant has withered and died. Stringing chillis up to dry and hanging alongside your garlic in the kitchen will give you two very versatile and well-used meal additions. However, chilli pastes and sauces are a must have in the fridge and cupboard for any spicy food loving family. And, depending on the variety of chilli you have grown, will provide you with many spiced up meals through the year. Doing a bit of reading on preserving will surely give you limitless ideas on how to continue to enjoy your homegrown harvests over the coming year, and given a little time and creativity your pantry will be filled with many delicious alternatives for your already fabulous produce. Happy harvesting!
