While St. Croix is the must-see island for the history buff, we are not only about the days of old. We are also known for our gorgeous beaches, world-class activities, natural resources, fine dining and golf courses. Our arts, crafts, music, and cultural events will lead you to discover exactly why St. Croix is a vibe like no other.
Dear Visitor,
Welcome to St. Croix, a land of spectacular beauty, rich cultural diversity and intriguing history. The largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, with 84 square miles of rolling hillsides, pristine beaches and a tropical rainforest, St. Croix offers endless opportunities to pursue your heart’s desire and create a unique vacation experience.
Adventurers and nature lovers can spend time hiking, kayaking, horseback riding, sailing or golfing at one of our championship golf courses. Scuba diving enthusiasts can experience five different dives in one day. For a more relaxed approach, swim in the crystalline waters of Buck Island, the only naturally occurring underwater National Monument in the U.S.
History buffs can experience St. Croix’s vibrant history through its architecture, historic landmarks, food, music and traditions. Explore the Christiansted National Historic Site, Forts Christiansvaern and Frederik or tour the Botanical Garden of the Virgin Islands and the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts. Early risers can catch a picturesque sunrise at Point Udall, the easternmost point in the United States.
Christiansted and Frederiksted, our main seaside towns, are a shopper’s nirvana with charming boutiques offering everything from handcrafted jewelry and apparel to colorful local art. Visitors enjoy a generous $1,600 duty-free shopping allowance.
Our chic hotels, resorts and cozy bed-and-breakfast inns will pamper you with warm hospitality, while our world-class restaurants tempt your taste buds with local and international menus. St. Croix’s wide array of the entertainment choices, including fairs, festivals, live concerts and gaming venues ensure that the fun never ends.
On behalf of the Department of Tourism, I hope you have an amazing vacation experience in St. Croix. Thank you for choosing the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Sincerely,
Joseph Boschulte Commissioner
The Virgin Islands Of The United States OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR GOVERNMENT HOUSE

Welcome to our beautiful Virgin Islands of the United States. Our islands are unique in what they each offer and our communities are filled with people who are proud of our storied history. While visiting, I encourage you to immerse yourself in our culture and to explore the unique offerings of all four Islands that make up our paradise.
St. Croix, the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, sits to the south of our small island chain and is renowned for its pastoral landscapes, Danish architecture and historical landmarks. With its offshore wrecks and unbelievably beautiful underwater reefs, St. Croix is also a popular destination for diving enthusiasts. Be sure to visit the historic towns of Frederiksted and Christiansted and indulge in St. Croix’s renowned art and delicious culinary scenes.
St. John is one of the smaller U.S. Virgin Islands and conservation center of the territory. It is best known for its pristine beaches and the attractions within the Virgin Islands National Park, which occupies more than half the island. The lands in the Virgin Islands National Park shelter migrant birds and the mangroves support corals and anemones. As with all the Virgin islands, you will find that St. John provides a rich mix of our culture and history.
St. Thomas is our business and shopping center and the seat of government. Charlotte Amalie is the capital town of the U.S. Virgin Islands and is one of the busiest ports of call for cruise ships in the Caribbean. St. Thomas is among the most popular destinations in the Caribbean for sailing and yachting enthusiasts.
Water Island is the smallest of the U.S. Virgin Islands and rests just off the coast of St. Thomas. It is mostly residential but offers fun attractions like Honeymoon Beach and quaint accommodations. The island can be reached by ferry from the Crown Bay Marina or by other vessels.
As the Lieutenant Governor and Governor, both Treganza Roach and I wish you a warm, fun-filled stay and please accept our invitation to return often to our paradise.

“Mother of three beautiful children, a wife, entrepreneur, and native daughter of St. Croix, I come from a long line of musicians, singers, dancers, photographers, and artists. After graduating from St. Joseph High School and, upon joining the US Air Force, I found myself immersed in diverse cultures and experiences, many of which drove me to seek refuge in the arts. In time, I realized that the arts was my peace and I chose to share it with the world.
Upon completing my B.S. in Psychology at the University of Maryland Global College, I used art therapy tools, honing in on my ability to teach art to all age groups with compassion, patience, and dedication, allowing clients to express feelings on the canvas without judgement or constraints.
I learned that reduction of stress, lifting of depression, and strengthening of the immune system are benefits of artistic pursuits and it inspired me to create my own business, hosting private/public paint parties for my clients, maternity belly paintings/ castings for expecting mothers, as well as teaching art to students from preschool to high school.
Painting allows me to share a little piece of myself with the world and affords me the opportunity to touch people in ways words can’t. To see snippets of my thoughts and dreams materialized and appreciated is one of the most rewarding things about being an artist.
As a multi-faceted, creative and Visual Artist, with a passion for mixed media (fabrics, clays, and plasters), my art usually represents strong West Indian women and Caribbean cultural elements transmuting them into visual stories left up to the viewers’ imagination. The August cover image is my first digital work and is a self-portrait of me!
I have been creating bodies of work for clients since 2014, and working with up-and-coming local artists creating spaces for art appreciation in the community. My images have been shown at both the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts in Frederiksted and the Cane Roots Art Gallery on Company Street in Christiansted this year. I am currently adding a new gallery to my website.”
"Growing up, I learned many forms of art including dance, martial arts and painting, thinking that each form was beautiful in its own way but then learned that I had a disease that could one day steal my eyesight. It was a bleak diagnosis, especially for an artist but, for me, it just made my vision for success that much clearer.
Born and raised in Chicago, I graduated with a degree in Art Education from the University of Illinois, Chicago. Creativity has not been sparse in my family of painters, metal smiths, photographers, and digital multimedia developers.
I founded Unicoi Art Studio in 1999, teaching after school art classes out of my home while I was also a kindergarten assistant at Francis Parker School teaching special dance and art classes in their after school program. Having no idea the company would quickly take off, I found myself teaching hundreds of Chicago kids who shared my passion for art! And, as it turned out, my father, a metal sculptor, welded the lettering for the front of the school years before I taught there! From 1998-2018, I managed Unicoi and directed all the art classes, birthday parties and camps there while writing thousands of new and unique lesson plans used across the Unicoi curriculum and camps inspiring children to learn art! Even though I am currently legally blind, diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa at 21, which has slowly deteriorated my vision, I still create art today and encourage those with disabilities to never give up on their goals.
After moving to St. Croix with my family in 2018, my husband Zach and I opened a fun toy and souvenir store called Dodat in downtown Christiansted, first on King Street, and now in Pan Am Pavilion. Here you can see my custom art, St. Croix cultural crafts, and unique toys and games for the whole family. Visit our new online Wandat store for St. Croix where you can order home goods and our clothing designs and have them shipped directly to you!" Eliana B Artistry | 801-390-2225

The Scandinavian country of Denmark was among the European contenders for ownership of Caribbean islands and acquired St. Thomas in 1660, St. John in 1718, and St. Croix, purchased from France in 1733.
Denmark left its mark here in many ways that have contributed to a close relationship between Danes and the U.S. Virgin Islands following the 1917 Transfer, bringing thousands of Danish visitors. Examples of this closeness are:
• The handsome, still functioning 18th and 19th century architecture – official, commercial and private, built of Danish brick brought as ship ballast.
• Ruins of many plantation structures that once produced sugar and rum, particularly former windmills that ground sugar cane.
• The presence of four churches of the Danish Lutheran denomination, with special sections for Danish gravesites in two old cemeteries.
• Many African heritage and mixed blood families carrying Danish last names, even the use of historic Danish first names for Crucian children.
• A Friends of Denmark organization that enjoys exchange-visit festivals with its sister society in Denmark, the Danish West Indian Society.
• Access on the internet to over 5 million documents in the Danish archives relevant to the Danish West Indies, as our islands were called.
• A friendly Crucian population that welcomes and looks out for visiting Danes. If you happen to be a visiting Dane, we bid you Velkommen!
70 illustrated articles from the pages of this magazine, 2009-2019, documenting in English and Danish the legacy of Denmark’s imprint on our culture. Undercover Books and Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts, $20.
By Nina York
At a recent St. Croix Cultural Heritage Conference at UVI, that summarized a 5-year comprehensive project undertaken by a team headquartered at Denmark’s Aarhus University, we learned of their extensive research. Included was a dissertation on Caribbean migrations between islands, a history of Senepol cattle, an interactive app for finding historical sites on St. Croix, and the need for restoration and maintenance of important structures and cultural resources.
Another project discussed took place here during the Great Depression of the United States as part of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New Deal. Similar to the nation-wide initiative, the Civilian Conservation Corps activity in the Virgin Islands started in December 1934. It involved forestry projects for the planting of thousands of trees by 160 young men aged 16 to 25 years, and included training in carpentry taught in camps and exposing them to discipline and teamwork that would be useful as WW II approached. The program ended in1942 because of the war but many conservation initiatives were taken up by the National Park Service.
Concurrently, a separate program for young women was initiated here under the National Youth Administration. It involved training young women in sewing skills at what was later to become Manor School, enabling them to make a living as seamstresses. One recruiter for that program was Jennie Christensen, instrumental in conveying her excellent cooking skills to the young trainees, who later married former Senator Erik Lawaetz.
Fast forward 100 years to programs for youth today on St. Croix. The inspiration of a Danish woman architect, Ulla Lunn, over 20 years ago, is now coming to fruition in a public/private undertaking of a Christiansted training center in building restoration skills for island students known as VIAC (Virgin Islands Architecture Center). This covers the former military barracks on Hospital Street and will teach the importance of our built heritage and instill pride in rehabilitation.
In another echo of former initiatives, the cooking skills, that were developed for girls in the 1920’s, has in recent years become a popular unisex vocational class at the St. Croix Educational Complex under the leadership of chef and former restaurateur Tony Doos and a Culinary Arts Program is now offered at UVI with its first graduating class in April of this year. St. Croix student teams have participated in and won awards at national culinary contests, and numerous chefs who got their training here hold top jobs at nationally famous restaurants.

He and his father love to share their local knowledge with the guests aboard and give them a very personalized snorkeling tour of Buck Island Reef. We are recommended by Fromer’s Tour Guide and sail from Green Cay Marina.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30 with the peak occurring between mid-August and late October. Hurricanes are Massive Storm Systems that form over the water and move toward land. Threats from hurricanes include high winds, heavy rainfall, storm surge, coastal and inland flooding, rip currents, and tornadoes. Here a few basic things to think about.
Register for Emergency Alerts and Notifications of potential safety hazards.
Know the difference between the NWS “Watches” and “Warnings.” A watch lets you know that weather conditions are favorable for a hazard to occur. It means “be on guard!” A warning requires immediate action. This means a weather hazard is imminent.
Download a printable VI Hurricane Tracking Map on the VITEMA website below. Remember that St. Croix is at 17/64.
Know the local hurricane evacuation route(s) and plan where you can stay or supply your house for several days.
Put together a Disaster Supply Kit, take pictures of important docs and belongings.
Make a plan to keep your beloved pets safe and talk with family and friends about your plan if a hurricane strikes.
Trim or remove damaged trees or limbs in your yard. Secure loose rain gutters and downspouts. Secure and reinforce your roof, windows, and doors if necessary.
Purchase a portable or install a generator for use outdoors during power outages.

Let’s start a leisurely walking tour of Christiansted at the site of the Old Scale House on the harborfront, known as the Wharf. This is one of a complex of five buildings comprising the Christiansted National Historic Site, established in 1952, administered by the National Park Service. The Welcome Center and Park Store is newly reopened here from 10am to 4pm, 7 days a week (closed from Noon-1pm for lunch). Site brochures are available along with books, maps and souvenirs.
Nearby, The Old Customs House with its sweeping staircase, on the grassy area next to the Fort, was completed in 1830. It now holds National Park Service offices.
Fort Christiansvaern was the first public building to be started by the Danes after the island was purchased from France in 1733. It is built of Danish yellow brick and was completed in 1749 and later expanded. Its present appearance reflects the 1830’s period. It is open Monday through Friday from 8:30am – 4:30pm. The adjacent Fort Parking Lot is open from 8am – 5pm and hours are strictly enforced. Coming soon is a daily $10.00 parking lot usage fee collected by an automated cashless machine at the entrance, accepting only debit and credit cards.
The Steeple Building across Hospital Street, formerly the Lutheran Church, dates from 1753. This site, on the Walking Tour, is currently closed for renovation.
Across Company Street lies the onetime Danish West India & Guinea Company Warehouse, built in 1749 as a storage facility for hundreds of barrels of sugar and rum. In its courtyard, slave auctions were formerly held.
Originally, Government House on King Street, was built as a home for a Danish merchant. That section dates from 1749; another section, the previous town house of a wealthy Danish plantation owner, was joined to it in 1826, together becoming the seat of the Danish West Indies government. The grand staircase and portico were added in 1830, as was the impressive ballroom/reception hall on the second floor by Governor General Peter von Scholten, who had his office and official residence here. Due to COVID-19 restrictions tours of the site have temporarily been suspended.
The Lord God of Sabaoth Lutheran Church across Queen Cross Street on King Street was originally the Dutch Reformed Church, built in the 1740’s and transferred to the Lutherans in 1831, who brought the furnishings here from the Steeple Building. Later, the steeple was added.
Across on King Street is the historic Lutheran Parish Hall, and in the courtyard the former Pastor’s residence.
Walking up Queen Cross Street to Company Street takes you to Apothecary Hall on the left corner. Opened in 1828 by Danish pharmacist Peder Eggers Bentzon, the town’s first pharmacy remained here until 1970.
Nearby on Company Street is the Old Market , laid out in the original town plan from 1735 and still being used. The well dates from 1863. On this square you will also find the downtown Post Office.
Established in 1952, Christiansted National Historic Site was the first unit of the National Park System in the US Virgin Islands. The park’s historic buidings and grounds commemorate the Danish heritage (1733-1917) of the town of Christiansted, St. Croix, which was named in honor of the reigning King of Denmark and Norway, Christian VI. In the 1700s, Christiansted was part of a mercantile system that linked Europe,West Africa, and the Caribbean in the infamous “Triangular Trade.”
Christiansted was the first town in the Lesser Antilles to be built on the grid system and to have a building code. Its distinctive colonial architecture reflects the town’s status as capital of the Danish West Indies (1755-1871); the great wealth generated by the export of cane sugar, molasses, and rum; and the influence of government building inspectors.
Your tour of Frederiksted begins at Fort Frederik by the cruise ship pier and waterfront park. Construction on the Fort began in 1752 and was completed in 1760. Featuring a museum with several permanent exhibits, and an art gallery, it is open Monday – Friday, 8:30 am to 4 pm. Admission $5., children under 12 free.
A public beach with showers and bathrooms is next to Fort Frederik.
Governor General Peter von Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the enslaved population in the Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848, from adjacent Buddhoe Park named for the renowned slave rebellion leader, a bust of whom is displayed there.
The Oscar E. Henry Customs House was built in the 1800s. The Freedom Fountain , facing the pier, was installed for the Emancipation’s 150th Anniversary Celebration.
After severe damage during a labor insurrection in 1878, parts of the town were rebuilt in Victorian style. Victoria House , on Strand Street, preserves the Frederiksted architecture of that time.
The Visitor’s Bureau is located upstairs on Strand Street above the Frederiksted Mall and next door to the historic light blue building housing the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts Free admission to exhibits and gift shop.
Frederiksted is home to several historic churches, including St. Paul’s Episcopal Church , Holy Tr inity Lutheran Church , Friedensberg Moravian Church , and St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church .
The handsomely restored Arthur Abel Complex , formerly The Danish School (1799), is now the office of the Lieutenant Governor in Frederiksted at Hospital and Market Street. At Strand and Queen Cross Streets is the Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library , built in 1803. Just behind it lies the Dorsch Theater , an open-air stage and event site. The Market Place , is still in use today, as it was in 1751 at the founding of Frederiksted.
Tour an early Danish homestead, the Lawaetz Family Museum at Estate Little La Grange on Mahogany Road. Plantation ruins offer visitors a tranquil backdrop for peace and contemplation at the Mt. Washington Labyrinth , 2 miles north of Frederiksted. Open every day, year-round. The entrance gate is to the left when you reach the property and parking lot. The Whim Museum , on Centerline Road, is the site of a former sugar cane plantation and temporarily closed. The Botanical Garden of the Virgin Islands also on Centerline, showcases on 16 acres of ruins of a former sugar plantation 1500 native & exotic species. Award-winning Ridge2Reef Farm , on Creque Dam Road, is a USDA Certified Organic Farm with produce, tours, and workshops. The Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge is .5 mile beyond the west end of the Melvin H. Evans highway. See St. Croix Map, Pg 54 for location.

The Washington, D.C. based National Trust for Historic Preservation (NTHP) announced on May 1 that the U.S. Virgin Islands’ first museum, Estate Whim Museum, was chosen to be listed as one of 2024’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places in America. Although the nomination is an honor, it is a dubious designation in that it, as journalist Susan Ellis wrote in the May 29 St. Thomas Source, “Being on a national list of the “worst” doesn’t seem like a good thing.”
The Save Whim Museum Advocacy Group (SWM) is responsible for bringing the Whim Museum to NTHP’s attention, having researched, written, and submitted the NTHP application. The Advocacy Group believes NTHP’s nomination confirms Estate Whim Museum as a nationally, historically significant site and underlines the urgent need for action to preserve this extremely important landmark for future generations.
Over the past four years, Save Whim Museum Advocacy Group has tirelessly advocated for the need to restore the Whim Museum, its collections, and archives. Unfortunately, there has been a concerted effort by St. Croix Landmarks Society’s (SCLS) current leadership to create false narratives, ultimately detracting from the end goal of preserving the rich material culture of the museum. However, there is a glimmer of hope with the NTHP recognition—its national designation and awareness can serve as a catalyst for positive and constructive change.
There is a glimmer of hope with the NTHP recognition— its national designation and awareness can serve as a catalyst for positive and constructive change.
Since 1988, the NTHP has nominated and published an annual list of America’s Most Endangered Historic Places. Over the years, NTHP has identified and raised awareness about threats to more than 350 of America’s historical treasures, of which less than 5% of the chosen sites have been lost.
NTHP has an extraordinary track record, and Save Whim Museum Advocacy Group looks forward to working with the NTHP to guide the Group and other Virgin Island stakeholders in moving forward with rebuilding sustainable restoration and everlasting preservation.
By promoting and highlighting the critical need to preserve St. Croix’s material culture, NTHP is proactively supporting Save Whim Museum Advocacy Group’s resolute and focused efforts to address the challenges facing the St. Croix community.
The Group extends its heartfelt thanks to Virgin Islands Governor Albert Bryan, Jr. for taking the necessary initiative to renew the museum’s lease and announce the implementation of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This effectively takes the responsibility of restoration management away from SCLS present leadership and assigns it to the Director
of the Virgin Islands’ Office of Disaster Recovery, Adrienne L. Williams-Octalien. This is a big step forward and, as owner of the property, the Virgin Islands Government has the power to insist that appropriate stewardship of Whim Museum be qualified and competent to manage museum operations properly. This would include following the organization’s bylaws and allowing easier access to the invaluable genealogy research library. There remain the issues of re-establishing SCLS’s revoked non-profit status, making public an audited financial report, holding annual meetings, having nominations and elections for members to the SCLS Board of Trustees, and finally investigating and validating the inventories of the priceless Crucian-built mahogany furniture collection, the silver collection, archives, and other assets.
The passion and dedication of those who genuinely care about the preservation of St. Croix’s cultural heritage are undeniable. Despite concerted attempts to distract and undermine their efforts, Save Whim Museum Advocacy Group’s commitment remains steadfast and is pleased to work with NTHP in every way possible. By staying true to these collective positive goals, there is a real and timely opportunity to overcome the current obstacles and move into the future with resilience and determination.

My name is Marina Falcone. I am the owner and instructor at Paradise Pilates in Christiansted. I moved full time to St. Croix in January 2024 with my husband. I spent the last 6 years living in St. Petersburg, Florida working as an elementary PE teacher, swim coach and fitness professional.
I was born and raised in Bethesda, Maryland and fell in love with the sport of swimming at a young age. I swam Division 1 at the College of William and Mary all 4 years and graduated with a B.A in Kinesiology. I continue to swim and compete in open water races locally and in Florida. I love supporting the races here on St. Croix and in St. John.
I have been working in the Fitness Industry since 2010. I started as a water aerobics instructor while managing a pool at a private club and continued to pursue a personal training certification as well as many other group class certifications. I started taking certifications for mat Pilates in 2014 and reformer Pilates in 2016 and continued to work at private clubs and fitness studios to build clientele and experience.
I have been visiting St. Croix for the last 8 years and saw the opportunity to open a Pilates studio. I offer group mat and reformer classes as well as private and duet reformer, mat and TRX sessions. I am loving how the studio is growing and meeting so many wonderful people! It’s been a lot of fun so far!

2024 / SEPTEMBER 2024
Every year at this time the skies above the Virgin Islands are fun to explore with bright stars easy to find and a meteor shower. This year there are three planets to look for and an eclipse of the Moon. Once the sky grows dark, look almost directly overhead for three bright stars. Since the triangle is visible all night long during the Summer up north, it is called the Summer Triangle. Each bright star marks a different star group or constellation. Western most is Vega, part of Lyra the Harp. To the South is Altair, in Aquila the Eagle. The third bright star is Deneb, marking the tail of Cygnus, the Swan. Perhaps you can see other stars which form the Swan’s body, neck and head and its wings which spread wide. Cygnus is flying South along the Milky Way. The Milky Way looks like a hazy band of light arcing across the sky. It is the light from billions and billions of stars so far away, that all we see is their light combined into this haze.
If you follow the Milky Way to the South you will come to a bright red star low near the horizon, this is Antares, the heart of Scorpius, the Scorpion. If the name Scorpius is familiar to you, it is because it is one of the twelve constellations of the zodiac. The zodiac is a band of star groups or
constellations that encircle the sky and it is to the zodiac that we must look to see the planets. While you may be familiar with the names of these groups, Capricornus, Aquarius, Pisces, Aires and Taurus, they do not look like you might expect.
East of Scorpius in the zodiac is Sagittarius, the Archer. Don't worry if you cannot see stars in the shape of an Archer in the southern part of the sky, but some people think that the stars of Sagittarius form a teapot, with the pot, its top, a handle and a spout.
Continuing eastward along the zodiac we will come to four constellations with no bright stars. First is Capricornus, the Seagoat. What, you can't find some faint stars that form a creature half fish and half goat? Following Capricornus is Aquarius, more faint stars so don't bother looking for a man pouring water from a jar. Next are the stars of Pisces, the Fish. You may be able to see one or two circles of faint stars, those are the fish. And just rising in the east, Aries the Ram.
This year Aquarius, that man pouring water from a jar, is easy to find, a bright star-like object is seen against the background of the stars of Aquarius – the planet Saturn. If you wait until after midnight, two
more planets will rise in the east. Jupiter and Mars are both found against the background of stars of Taurus, the Bull. Taurus’ red right eye, the star Aldebaran leads the way, then the bright yellow-white Jupiter and finally farthest east, the red Mars. Below Aldebaran, Jupiter and Mars, you can easily spot Orion the Hunter, one of the best-known constellations.
Every year, in August, the Earth passes through a cloud of dust left behind by the comet Swift-Tuttle, which was discovered in 1862. When this dust burns up in the Earth’s atmosphere, we see a meteor or shooting stars. The Perseids can produce up to 60 meteors per hour. The meteor shower peaks on the night of August 11th to 12th. The best time to look is between midnight and dawn from a clear dark location. Meteors may appear anywhere in the sky.
There will be a partial eclipse of the Moon on the night of September 17th to 18th. Lunar eclipses are very slow events, the eclipse will start at 8:41 p.m., the maximum of the eclipse will be at 10:44 p.m., and the eclipse will end at 12:47 a.m. At the maximum almost all of the Moon will be in the Earth’s shadow and it will appear darker than normal.
