ST. CROIX A VIBE LIKE NO OTHER
While St. Croix is the must-see island for the history buff, we are not only about the days of old. We are also known for our gorgeous beaches, world-class activities, natural resources, fine dining and golf courses. Our arts, crafts, music, and cultural events will lead you to discover exactly why St. Croix is a vibe like no other.
CONTENTS
Dear Visitor,
Welcome to St. Croix, a land of spectacular beauty, rich cultural diversity and intriguing history. The largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, with 84 square miles of rolling hillsides, pristine beaches and a tropical rainforest, St. Croix offers endless opportunities to pursue your heart’s desire and create a unique vacation experience.
Adventurers and nature lovers can spend time hiking, kayaking, horseback riding, sailing or golfing at one of our championship golf courses. Scuba diving enthusiasts can experience five different dives in one day. For a more relaxed approach, swim in the crystalline waters of Buck Island, the only naturally occurring underwater National Monument in the U.S.
History buffs can experience St. Croix’s vibrant history through its architecture, historic landmarks, food, music and traditions. Explore the Christiansted National Historic Site, Forts Christiansvaern and Frederik or tour the Botanical Garden of the Virgin Islands and the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts. Early risers can catch a picturesque sunrise at Point Udall, the easternmost point in the United States.
Christiansted and Frederiksted, our main seaside towns, are a shopper’s nirvana with charming boutiques offering everything from handcrafted jewelry and apparel to colorful local art. Visitors enjoy a generous $1,600 duty-free shopping allowance.
Our chic hotels, resorts and cozy bed-and-breakfast inns will pamper you with warm hospitality, while our world-class restaurants tempt your taste buds with local and international menus. St. Croix’s wide array of the entertainment choices, including fairs, festivals, live concerts and gaming venues ensure that the fun never ends.
On behalf of the Department of Tourism, I hope you have an amazing vacation experience in St. Croix. Thank you for choosing the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Sincerely,
Joseph Boschulte Commissioner
The Virgin Islands Of The United States OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR GOVERNMENT HOUSE

Welcome to our beautiful Virgin Islands of the United States. Our islands are unique in what they each offer and our communities are filled with people who are proud of our storied history. While visiting, I encourage you to immerse yourself in our culture and to explore the unique offerings of all four Islands that make up our paradise.
St. Croix, the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, sits to the south of our small island chain and is renowned for its pastoral landscapes, Danish architecture and historical landmarks. With its offshore wrecks and unbelievably beautiful underwater reefs, St. Croix is also a popular destination for diving enthusiasts. Be sure to visit the historic towns of Frederiksted and Christiansted and indulge in St. Croix’s renowned art and delicious culinary scenes.
St. John is one of the smaller U.S. Virgin Islands and conservation center of the territory. It is best known for its pristine beaches and the attractions within the Virgin Islands National Park, which occupies more than half the island. The lands in the Virgin Islands National Park shelter migrant birds and the mangroves support corals and anemones. As with all the Virgin islands, you will find that St. John provides a rich mix of our culture and history.
St. Thomas is our business and shopping center and the seat of government. Charlotte Amalie is the capital town of the U.S. Virgin Islands and is one of the busiest ports of call for cruise ships in the Caribbean. St. Thomas is among the most popular destinations in the Caribbean for sailing and yachting enthusiasts.
Water Island is the smallest of the U.S. Virgin Islands and rests just off the coast of St. Thomas. It is mostly residential but offers fun attractions like Honeymoon Beach and quaint accommodations. The island can be reached by ferry from the Crown Bay Marina or by other vessels.
As the Lieutenant Governor and Governor, both Treganza Roach and I wish you a warm, fun-filled stay and please accept our invitation to return often to our paradise.

VI FLAVORS AND FRAGRANCES STIR THE SENSES
By Nina York
When you visit a tropical environment like this you are tickled by the variety and intensity of colors in nature –the intense aqua of the sea, the multi-hued Bougainvillea, the blooming yellow Sage tree, the intense crimson of the Flamboyant tree, all nicely distributed at various seasons.
The palette of nuances in the hues of local residential architecture reflects a love of color, sometimes beyond tasteful in their intensity. This love is also reflected in the clothing worn by many individuals calling this island their home. In fact, it is reflected in the official plaid design of the Virgin Islands that we know as madras used in school uniforms, a design that has a history of its own about each color.
So it should come as no surprise that flavors and fragrances of the Caribbean are intense. Many islanders are known to add Tabasco or other hot sauce to every meal they consume. Hot sauces are indeed so popular that dozens of brands are available, usually having jalapeño pepper as one of the hot ingredients.
Another strong and piquant flavor that enjoys great popularity here is the Tamarind fruit that grows in pods on shade trees found all over the island, originally from India. Tangy and spicy, it is made into juice, candy, and as an ingredient in Indian cuisine.
The sweet fragrance of the Frangipani tree’s lovely flowers in white or pink envelops you with its perfume. The caterpillar with its colorful coat is its enemy as it will gobble up leaves and blossoms, with messy footprints.
On a gentler note, a colorful yield of a small shrub known as the Lipstick tree.It can be seen at our Botanical Garden’s section of Medicinal herbs. The little red seeds in the blossom-fruit Annatto has wide use as a coloring agent used in cooking and was once used as war paint by the Amerindians that lived here long ago. It has no notable fragrance but great coloring ability..
Coconut is ubiquitous at any time of year and is so beneficial to mankind, contributing essential nutrition in the form of liquid nourishment, and as an oil, as a tasty, sweet candy and as an ingredient in cakes and tropical cuisine. Banana needs no introduction, other
than that it is grown here, but a local variety, half the size of the regular kind, yields twice the flavor. Ginger, grown as a tuber, adds its healthful and unique flavor to beverages and a variety of dishes typical of the Caribbean, not least baked goods.
Papaya is a melon- like fruit but with a chunky shape, delicious and easily grown from the little black seeds that are found at the core. Local Watermelon’s smooth and bulky round green shape disguises its bright red, juicy interior that is the most refreshing remedy on a hot day.
Lemon and Lime citrus fruit grown on small trees each yield an essential acidic flavor in cooking and beverages and provides vitamin C that in former days was used as the cure for scurvy. Guava trees supply a tasty fruit the size of an apple, delicious eaten raw and often used for preserves .
Pineapple is a fragrant fruit with a unique appearance. The yellow flesh behind the knobby shell is delicious and can be eaten raw and also be preserved and used in baking. Avocado is widely grown here on sturdy trees; it’s a late summer fruit and healthful and delicious on its own or in salads.
A great way to acquaint yourself with local fruits and vegetables is by visiting local farmstands, including the large group stands on Saturday mornings at our Department of Agriculture in mid-island. At these popular farm stands you can get answers from the farmers to your questions about the many special edibles you never saw before.
In recent years, thanks to government and UVI support, our agriculture has evolved. The Federal Government guarantees the safety of the edible fruit and vegetables sold here. This important arm of our economy has many struggles to overcome, but becoming less dependent on imported produce is an economic advantage for all of us, not to mention a better, more nutritious product if grown locally.

OCT 24
Victoria Rivera, M.D.
I was born in the beautiful state of Colorado and raised in a tiny rural town. At a young age I fell in love with reading and wanted to be a writer. However, the universe had other plans. During my 16th summer, a sudden and serious bout of kidney inflammation and 3 months bed rest sparked my fascination with the language of medicine. My dream shifted: become a physician and retire early enough to write.
The following summer, I moved to Brooklyn, New York to live with my aunt, completing high school, pre-med at the City College of NY and medical school at The Albert Einstein College of Medicine. After 25 years, I retired from my New York medical practice in 2014 (at the age of 55) and moved to St. Croix.
I joined a writer’s group and began drawing, then painting, for the first time. Not formally trained, I am free to explore and create without much self-judgment or mental boundaries. As a self-taught artist, it has been an unexpected blessing to be embraced by my community of artists, writers, friends and family here on St. Croix and abroad.
Actively participating in my community as a “Crucian by choice,” offers a visibility I never encountered, where exploring my Puerto Rican and Indigenous Mezo-American cultural heritage through my art is both safe and celebrated. My work often encompasses contemporary portraits and Afro/Indio/Caribbean diasporic themes using acrylic.
Since 2015, my work has been exhibited in St. Croix at Top Hat Gallery, Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts, town wall murals, Cane Roots Art Gallery, Ft. Fredrick, Crucian Heritage and Nature Tourism, St. Croix Agriculture Fairgrounds, Bethlehem Sugar Factory, World Ocean School, Women’s Coalition of St. Croix, and St. George Village Botanical Garden Fundraisers."

As a 60’s idealist I was in search of a new way of looking at life; to find out what was universal to mankind and what was specific to the United States. I also wanted to work on my own and find my voice as an artist. The Virgin Islands became my graduate school.
My journey over the next 50 years has been to create work that questions the meaning of what makes life in the Caribbean, specifically the Virgin Islands, so unique. Much of my work references the personal drama inherent in mythology as it tells the stories of the transforming power of love, life and death. Finally, how does this relate to the rest of the world and to each of us personally and collectively as we navigate the wide Sargasso Sea of life.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT - Current work involves collaborative and solo multi-media projects, which deal with migration and journeys in a personal and collective way acknowledging the impact of colonialism in the Virgin Islands and the Caribbean. My work has evolved over the last 50 years of art making, from painting, printmaking, assemblage to contemporary art methods utilizing new media. The physical environment, historical archives, the vernacular and personal island narratives are my resources. My process is random and instinctive, inspired by the sensation of the powerful landscape and the glory and power of the history and culture as I have internalized it. As an artist I feel no bounds other than those that I impose upon myself and yet I am driven by the need to get the work out and to document the rapid changes from the last century to the 21st. Some of the recurring themes in my work are: House of Dreams, The Past is Always Present, The Transfer.
My upcoming show at CMCA, opening Nov. 9 and sponsored by the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts, is a selection of works from the period 1978 to 2023 with an emphasis on the paintings made in the middle passage of my life."

Our Danish Connection
The Scandinavian country of Denmark was among the European contenders for ownership of Caribbean islands and acquired St. Thomas in 1660, St. John in 1718, and St. Croix, purchased from France in 1733.
Denmark left its mark here in many ways that have contributed to a close relationship between Danes and the U.S. Virgin Islands following the 1917 Transfer, bringing thousands of Danish visitors. Examples of this closeness are:
• The handsome, still functioning 18th and 19th century architecture – official, commercial and private, built of Danish brick brought as ship ballast.
• Ruins of many plantation structures that once produced sugar and rum, particularly former windmills that ground sugar cane.
• The presence of four churches of the Danish Lutheran denomination, with special sections for Danish gravesites in two old cemeteries.
• Many African heritage and mixed blood families carrying Danish last names, even the use of historic Danish first names for Crucian children.
• A Friends of Denmark organization that enjoys exchange-visit festivals with its sister society in Denmark, the Danish West Indian Society.
• Access on the internet to over 5 million documents in the Danish archives relevant to the Danish West Indies, as our islands were called.
• A friendly Crucian population that welcomes and looks out for visiting Danes. If you happen to be a visiting Dane, we bid you Velkommen!
70 illustrated articles from the pages of this magazine, 2009-2019, documenting in English and Danish the legacy of Denmark’s imprint on our culture. Undercover Books and Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts, $20.
VISABLE FROM FAR WAY, THIS DANISH LEGACY IS SO REMOTE
By Nina York
At almost the northwesternmost point of St. Croix stands an old lighthouse named for the site Hams Bluff. Could it be named for the famous former denizen named Hamilton? Hardly, but that question is one of several concerning a structure installed in a remote spot in 1915 by the Danish government and continued in service until 1990! Why was it built at a time when negotiations about the sale of this island and St. Thomas and St. John to the United States were underway? Maybe the anticipation of increased and sometimes suspicious maritime traffic due to the opening of the Panama Canal.
At any rate, after the Transfer in 1917, the lighthouse ownership was transferred from the Danish authorities to the U.S. Navy and was later taken over by the U.S. Coast Guard. It is hoped that it performed its service adequately, but no data is currently available. In addition to the lighthouse, two concrete buildings were provided as a residence for the lighthouse keeper. A great job for a hermit!
The lighthouse is not in great shape, and climbing its rusty metal structure warrants venturesome hikers to have had tetanus shots. Many appeals have gone out over the years to have the lighthouse restored. May we add our appeal, given the Hams Bluff lighthouse has been registered as a historic site.
But the view from its 362- foot elevation is spectacular and worth the effort that the steep but fortunately short path demands of hikers. Over the years, a Hams Bluff fan club of sorts has emerged celebrating this remote spot of St. Croix. Numerous online visuals may entice you to explore its views. Guided tours are very popular and can be booked
on the Facebook page of Fitness Integrated Tours. Check Gotostcroix.com Hams Bluff Lighthouse for a spectacular video and more information about this special place. What makes the area unique is the wilderness surrounding the lighthouse. This forest was once, in the long-ago days of slavery, a remote place of escape for runaway enslaved, Maroons as they were called. On old maps you can find it shown as Maroonberg (Maroon Hill.) A refuge offered by escaping to the dense growth on the steep, almost inaccessible hills was for many preferable to the hardship endured working the fields at the sugar cane plantations. Learning to live with nature and whatever nutrition it offered was not easy.
A tree commonly found in that area is Morinda, also known as Pain Killer for its leaves that soothe arthritis pain when rubbed on the sore spot. The tree also offers a strange-looking fruit known as Noni. It is extremely nutritious and is also known as “starvation apple” because of its bitter taste, making it the last choice for a hungry person. The juice is anti-oxidant and improves endurance and balance. Today you can find bottled Noni juice with all the bad taste removed for sale at places like our Botanical Garden!
Nina York, born in Denmark but a St. Croix resident since 1976, has been a contributor to this magazine since 2009 and was its editor from 1990-2003. She offers a wealth of information to visitors about island history and connects with Danish visitors in their own language. She offers translations, has published three books about this island and sells historic maps and prints. ninayork@gmail.com

DENIS SULLIVAN! Anticipating
As we prepare the Oct/Nov issue of the magazine, I can’t help but be reminded that the tall ship Denis Sullivan will surprise us all again by sailing into Christiansted Harbor around Thanksgiving to be here in time for another season of classroom sailing with the school children of St. Croix and offering multiple sunset sails to visitors and the general public.
Built in 2000, Denis Sullivan has spent the past two decades educating hundreds of students about Great Lakes schooners and maritime history. Now, as part of the World Ocean School fleet, the ship is on to new voyages in Boston and St. Croix.
Denis Sullivan hosts hundreds of St Croix children, as well as the St. Croix community, throughout the winter season, from December through March, before beginning her transit back to Boston. Last season, students learned more about the ocean, and basic maritime skills like how to tie knots, how to raise the sails, and how to navigate.
We are very lucky to have this opportunity come to our shores every winter and we look forward to seeing our old friend on the horizon! I am told to start looking around November 15. Follow the journey on their Ships Log online. World Ocean School www.worldoceanschool.org

DRIVE LEFT
Whether renting a car or crossing the street, it is vital to remember that traffic flows from the left side of the road!
St. Croix has two towns, Christiansted at the center on the Northshore and Frederiksted at the West End, connected by the Melvin H. Evans highway. The Caribbean Sea, surrounding the island, is always there guiding you along roads that wind the coast.
Car rental agencies offer Jeeps, SUVs, vans, sedans, and trucks. They come with a full tank of gas and should be returned full! The driver and front seat passenger are required by law to use seat belts.
There are two parking lots in Christiansted, both with fees. One is the NPS lot next to the Fort, open from 8am-5pm, M-F. The other, on the corner of Strand and King Cross Streets, has extended hours. Check our Maps for more details, Pages 54-58.

CHRISTIANSTED WALKING TOUR
Let’s start a leisurely walking tour of Christiansted at the site of the Old Scale House on the harborfront, known as the Wharf. This is one of a complex of five buildings comprising the Christiansted National Historic Site, established in 1952, administered by the National Park Service. The Welcome Center and Park Store is newly reopened here from 10am to 4pm, 7 days a week (closed from Noon-1pm for lunch). Site brochures are available along with books, maps and souvenirs.
Nearby, The Old Customs House with its sweeping staircase, on the grassy area next to the Fort, was completed in 1830. It now holds National Park Service offices.
Fort Christiansvaern was the first public building to be started by the Danes after the island was purchased from France in 1733. It is built of Danish yellow brick and was completed in 1749 and later expanded. Its present appearance reflects the 1830’s period. It is open Monday through Friday from 8:30am – 4:30pm. The adjacent Fort Parking Lot is open from 8am – 5pm and hours are strictly enforced. Coming soon is a daily $10.00 parking lot usage fee collected by an automated cashless machine at the entrance, accepting only debit and credit cards.
The Steeple Building across Hospital Street, formerly the Lutheran Church, dates from 1753. This site, on the Walking Tour, is currently closed for renovation.
Across Company Street lies the onetime Danish West India & Guinea Company Warehouse, built in 1749 as a storage facility for hundreds of barrels of sugar and rum. In its courtyard, slave auctions were formerly held.
Originally, Government House on King Street, was built as a home for a Danish merchant. That section dates from 1749; another section, the previous town house of a wealthy Danish plantation owner, was joined to it in 1826, together becoming the seat of the Danish West Indies government. The grand staircase and portico were added in 1830, as was the impressive ballroom/reception hall on the second floor by Governor General Peter von Scholten, who had his office and official residence here. Due to COVID-19 restrictions tours of the site have temporarily been suspended.
The Lord God of Sabaoth Lutheran Church across Queen Cross Street on King Street was originally the Dutch Reformed Church, built in the 1740’s and transferred to the Lutherans in 1831, who brought the furnishings here from the Steeple Building. Later, the steeple was added.
Across on King Street is the historic Lutheran Parish Hall, and in the courtyard the former Pastor’s residence.
Walking up Queen Cross Street to Company Street takes you to Apothecary Hall on the left corner. Opened in 1828 by Danish pharmacist Peder Eggers Bentzon, the town’s first pharmacy remained here until 1970.
Nearby on Company Street is the Old Market , laid out in the original town plan from 1735 and still being used. The well dates from 1863. On this square you will also find the downtown Post Office.
Christiansted
Established in 1952, Christiansted National Historic Site was the first unit of the National Park System in the US Virgin Islands. The park’s historic buidings and grounds commemorate the Danish heritage (1733-1917) of the town of Christiansted, St. Croix, which was named in honor of the reigning King of Denmark and Norway, Christian VI. In the 1700s, Christiansted was part of a mercantile system that linked Europe,West Africa, and the Caribbean in the infamous “Triangular Trade.”
Christiansted was the first town in the Lesser Antilles to be built on the grid system and to have a building code. Its distinctive colonial architecture reflects the town’s status as capital of the Danish West Indies (1755-1871); the great wealth generated by the export of cane sugar, molasses, and rum; and the influence of government building inspectors.
Frederiksted Map Frederiksted Map
Your tour of Frederiksted begins at Fort Frederik by the cruise ship pier and waterfront park. Construction on the Fort began in 1752 and was completed in 1760. Featuring a museum with several permanent exhibits, and an art gallery, it is open Monday – Friday, 8:30 am to 4 pm. Admission $5., children under 12 free.
A public beach with showers and bathrooms is next to Fort Frederik.
Governor General Peter von Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the enslaved population in the Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848, from adjacent Buddhoe Park named for the renowned slave rebellion leader, a bust of whom is displayed there.
The Oscar E. Henry Customs House was built in the 1800s. The Freedom Fountain , facing the pier, was installed for the Emancipation’s 150th Anniversary Celebration.
After severe damage during a labor insurrection in 1878, parts of the town were rebuilt in Victorian style. Victoria House , on Strand Street, preserves the Frederiksted architecture of that time.
The Visitor’s Bureau is located upstairs on Strand Street above the Frederiksted Mall and next door to the historic light blue building housing the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts Free admission to exhibits and gift shop.
Frederiksted is home to several historic churches, including St. Paul’s Episcopal Church , Holy Tr inity Lutheran Church , Friedensberg Moravian Church , and St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church .
The handsomely restored Arthur Abel Complex , formerly The Danish School (1799), is now the office of the Lieutenant Governor in Frederiksted at Hospital and Market Street. At Strand and Queen Cross Streets is the Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library , built in 1803. Just behind it lies the Dorsch Theater , an open-air stage and event site. The Market Place , is still in use today, as it was in 1751 at the founding of Frederiksted.

Major Elements of Our Island Cultural Mix Turn 60 in October!
By Nina York
The year 1964 seems long ago for most of us in St. Croix. It was a time of opening to the outside world but prosperity still eluded most of our citizens. It was a time when exploring exotic places thanks to jet travel and new resorts was becoming popular on the mainland.
A coincidence in our island development took place in two very different organizations being founded, happily both based on mutual friendship with Crucians. To coincide with the traditional Columbus Day, the Puerto Rico-Virgin Islands Friendship Day was established by Governor Ralph Paiewonsky, recognizing the contributions by the many Puerto Rican settlers in St. Croix, primarily from the nearby island of Vieques. The vibrant culture of Puerto Rico lent itself well to the smaller neighbor island only 40 miles away, with a major cultural element being its flavorful cuisine being welcomed all over St. Croix. A culture excelling in the arts, including colorful masks, cultural dance and music like Salsa and Merengue, have taken a solid foothold here. Spanish is the second language here, spoken by a large part of our population and taught in schools. In the island political world, we have had a Governor Juan Francisco Luis and several Hispanic members of our legislature and administration. Virgin Islands Friendship Day has expanded beyond the single day and features multiple entertaining events. See our Events pages for details.
The other organization celebrating its 60th anniversary is the St. Croix Friends of Denmark Society. The island has a long history as a Danish colony purchased from France in 1733. While St. Croix, along with St. Thomas and St. John, was sold to the United States in 1917, much remained here as a legacy of that period, such as the historic, handsome architecture using Danish bricks. The Lutheran church, the Danish state religion, also has a prominent presence. You can read more details in the column Our Danish Connection on page 39.
In 1964, St. Croix’s first Friends of Denmark president was Byron Case, who also founded St. Croix’s Island Center. A grand event in 1967 brought a group of over 100 Danes to St. Croix from the Danish West Indian Society for a splendid visit, some staying in hotels, others in the homes of members of the new organization. This gave birth to the idea of reciprocation of travelers from here being greeted in Denmark in 1969. From then on, alternating exchange festivals have continued, fostering friendships in the thousands.
But the organization is more than a travel club. Events through the year include Danish-related events like Transfer Day March 31 and a St. Hans Aften Midsummer bonfire celebration. They welcome Danish scholars, musicians, gymnasts and soccer athletes. and sponsor publication of books related to the island’s history and support scholarships for island students at Danish universities. Many Crucians have Danish roots, and genealogical research is offered online with assistance from members.
Already in 1917, a friendship organization in Denmark was started by former administration and military personnel previously stationed here. Known as the Danish West Indian Society, it arose from the interest voiced by Danes who wanted to keep contact with this tropical paradise. During meetings they shared stories about their time in in a place that was so different and in retrospect seemed so romantic. A few Danes had settled here and established a family, and a visit from old friends eventually led to the thought of an organization to satisfy travel-hungry Danes, encouraged by a promotion-savvy Danish official in New York, Axel Dessau.
This fall they will facilitate the recognition of Victor Cornelins, a native son of Frederiksted and born in1898 who, as a 7-year old along with a young girl Alberta, also from here, were taken to Denmark in connection with an unfortunate Copenhagen exhibit in Tivoli featuring the Danish colonial possessions. The treatment they suffered being put in a cage was reprehensible.
They remained to get an education to become teachers in St. Croix, but Alberta contracted TB and died. Victor adjusted to his new life and did well, eventually getting his teaching degree. However, in the meantime, the Danish West Indies were sold to the United States and no teaching position was available. But he was welcomed in the home of a couple in the town of Nakskov where he was hired as a teacher in the public school. His musical ability made him a popular teacher and he advanced to be assistant principal. He founded a choir of woman nurses that continues today and traveled throughout Denmark performing concerts. Former students have visited here in recognition of his importance in their lives. He died in Denmark in1985 but he is still celebrated with a large statue of him in Nakskov, and a bronze bust of Victor Cornelins is being donated to the town of Frederiksted where it will be placed appropriately in the old Danish school known as the Arthur Abel Complex, on the same street as Victor’s modest childhood home.

Who is Gary Jett, MD? Let me tell you why he is different from other physicians. Dr Jett is a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist with main emphasis on relieving your pain.
He has been providing pain relief on St. Croix since 1999 utilizing the powerful properties of ozone which are magical. Most patients feel the magic of it almost immediately and lasting pain-relief. It is accomplished without the use of steroids or the need to come to therapy for a prolonged period. Of the many types of regenerative procedures including PRP and stem cell therapy, ozone therapy responds much faster with better results. Dr. Jett has participated in many local triathlons and cycling events and personally has had most of the related injuries. “Who Feels It Knows It.” www.garyjettmd.com

ST. CROIX Sky Watch
OCTOBER
2024 / NOVEMBER 2024
Our clear skies are perfect for star gazing!
Tom Lesser, formerly Senior Lecturer at the American Museum-Hayden Planetarium and frequent island visitor.
and sunset times are based on the 15th of each month.
The end of another day brings yet another beautiful Virgin Island sunset. As the evening sky grows dark, look low in the southwest for a very bright starlike object. This is the planet Venus. If you watch Venus, you may see it change color from white to red to blue. Venus is not actually changing color. You can see the planets because they reflect sunlight. As the light from Venus passed through the air around the Earth, the air distorts the light, and you see Venus seem to change color from white to red to blue to white to red and so forth. Because Venus is so bright and because it appears to change colors, it is the most commonly reported UFO!
As the Sun moves lower below the horizon, and the night sky grows darker, another bright starlike object will appear, high in the eastern sky. Nowhere near as bright as Venus, this is the planet Saturn. Saturn will set in the west around 2:30 a.m.
At about 8:15 p.m. Jupiter will rise in the east. Brighter than Saturn, but not as bright as Venus, Jupiter is easily spotted. Jupiter is seen against the background of stars of the constellation of Taurus, the Bull. The Bull’s red right eye is marked by the bright star Aldebaran.
Still later, about 11:00 p.m., the red planet
Mars rises in the east.
Looking at the night sky in the evening, toward the West, you should be able to easily spot three bright stars which form a large triangle. Since the triangle is visible all night long during the Summer up north, it is called the Summer Triangle. Each bright star marks a different star group or constellation. Farthest West and lowest in the sky is Vega, part of Lyra the Harp. To the South is Altair, in Aquila the Eagle. The third bright star is Deneb, marking the tail of Cygnus, the Swan. Perhaps you can see other stars which form the Swan’s body, neck and head and its wings which spread wide.
High in the eastern sky you should be able to find four fairly bright stars forming a large square. These stars mark the body of Pegasus, the Flying Horse. Fainter stars to the West form the neck and head of the horse and others form the two front legs. This horse has no hind legs or tail. Since this star group is seen when it is Fall in the Northern Hemisphere during and just after the World Series, if we were forming a naming the star groups today this might be the baseball diamond. Each star of the square marks one of the bases; other stars mark the pitcher and catcher and there is even an umpire behind
home plate. If we did not have television, we might use this group to illustrate stories of past Series. If these stories were told from one generation to the next, one day people might really be looking for a baseball diamond in this part of the heaven. So, if you think you can see a baseball diamond here, look for the Flying Horse.
In October, on the night of the 21st to the 22nd, the Orionids meteor shower reaches its maximum. This shower of “falling stars” usually produces some 20 meteors per hour for an observer with a good clear dark sky. The light from the waning gibbous Moon will overpower the fainter meteors.
On the evening of November 17th to 18th the Leonid meteor shower reaches its peak. Unfortunately, the bright nearly Full Moon will block out all but the very brightest meteors.
Of course, falling stars are not really stars at all, but pebble sized bits of cosmic dust burning up as they race through the Earth’s atmosphere some 50 miles over your head. The best time to watch a meteor shower is between midnight and dawn. No special equipment is required, perhaps a blanket or a lounge chair – just lay back and scan the sky with your eyes for those brief flashes of light we call shooting stars.
