Dear Visitor,
Welcome to St. Croix, a land of spectacular beauty, rich cultural diversity and intriguing history. The largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, with 84 square miles of rolling hillsides, pristine beaches and a tropical rainforest, St. Croix offers endless opportunities to pursue your heart’s desire and create a unique vacation experience.
Adventurers and nature lovers can spend time hiking, kayaking, horseback riding, sailing or golfing at one of our championship golf courses. Scuba diving enthusiasts can experience five different dives in one day. For a more relaxed approach, swim in the crystalline waters of Buck Island, the only naturally occurring underwater National Monument in the U.S.
History buffs can experience St. Croix’s vibrant history through its architecture, historic landmarks, food, music and traditions. Explore the Christiansted National Historic Site, Forts Christiansvaern and Frederik or tour the Botanical Garden of the Virgin Islands and the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts. Early risers can catch a picturesque sunrise at Point Udall, the easternmost point in the United States.
Christiansted and Frederiksted, our main seaside towns, are a shopper’s nirvana with charming boutiques offering everything from handcrafted jewelry and apparel to colorful local art. Visitors enjoy a generous $1,600 duty-free shopping allowance.
Our chic hotels, resorts and cozy bed-and-breakfast inns will pamper you with warm hospitality, while our world-class restaurants tempt your taste buds with local and international menus. St. Croix’s wide array of the entertainment choices, including fairs, festivals, live concerts and gaming venues ensure that the fun never ends.
On behalf of the Department of Tourism, I hope you have an amazing vacation experience in St. Croix. Thank you for choosing the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Sincerely,
Joseph Boschulte Commissioner
The Virgin Islands Of The United States OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR GOVERNMENT HOUSE

Welcome to our beautiful Virgin Islands of the United States. Our islands are unique in what they each offer and our communities are filled with people who are proud of our storied history. While visiting, I encourage you to immerse yourself in our culture and to explore the unique offerings of all four Islands that make up our paradise.
St. Croix, the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, sits to the south of our small island chain and is renowned for its pastoral landscapes, Danish architecture and historical landmarks. With its offshore wrecks and unbelievably beautiful underwater reefs, St. Croix is also a popular destination for diving enthusiasts. Be sure to visit the historic towns of Frederiksted and Christiansted and indulge in St. Croix’s renowned art and delicious culinary scenes.
St. John is one of the smaller U.S. Virgin Islands and conservation center of the territory. It is best known for its pristine beaches and the attractions within the Virgin Islands National Park, which occupies more than half the island. The lands in the Virgin Islands National Park shelter migrant birds and the mangroves support corals and anemones. As with all the Virgin islands, you will find that St. John provides a rich mix of our culture and history.
St. Thomas is our business and shopping center and the seat of government. Charlotte Amalie is the capital town of the U.S. Virgin Islands and is one of the busiest ports of call for cruise ships in the Caribbean. St. Thomas is among the most popular destinations in the Caribbean for sailing and yachting enthusiasts.
Water Island is the smallest of the U.S. Virgin Islands and rests just off the coast of St. Thomas. It is mostly residential but offers fun attractions like Honeymoon Beach and quaint accommodations. The island can be reached by ferry from the Crown Bay Marina or by other vessels.
As the Lieutenant Governor and Governor, both Treganza Roach and I wish you a warm, fun-filled stay and please accept our invitation to return often to our paradise.

Enso Indigo Home – 340-513-3195

They’ve found a way to bring back those incredible textiles, create new designs, and mix it all with new-found objects. guests for nearly two decades, they had long dreamed of putting their personal touches on the landmark hotel. When the opportunity arose to purchase Sand Castle in 2017, they jumped at the chance to make their dream come true.
Hailing from the Nashville area, the two come to the hospitality business from very different career histories –Chris in salon ownership and Ted as a labor leader and senior flight attendant at American Airlines. Over the past few years, they have assembled a team of talent with the focus being to welcome guests to the hotel as if it’s their second home. EASY DINING GUIDE
Celebrating Nature’s Gifts at the Ag Fair!
by Nina York
Since the mid-1700’s, this island derived nature’s bounty in the form of an abundant harvest of sugar cane that, at that time, was a precious crop. This little island, around 1815, produced 20 million tons of sugar harvested on the circa 150 plantations as a top producer, earning St. Croix the epithet “Breadbasket of the Caribbean.”
This came to an end around 1820 with the discovery in Europe that sugar beets would be a locally grown substitute at great savings and, while sugar cane continued to be grown here until 1965, it was not profitable. The 1930’s brought the Homestead Act allowing small-scale farmers plots for farming and construction of a modest dwelling.
Today, agriculture, in the form of cane fields, as it was then is almost gone except for Estate Prosperity just north of Frederiksted and, on a smaller scale, Mr. Smithen’s fields of cane and breadfruit adjoining Queen Mary Highway in Estate Lower Love. Instead we see numerous fields yielding crops of a varied nature, some fruit and vegetables that were grown in former days for food.
Typical harvests today contain cucumbers, tomatoes, bananas, plantains, squashes of several kinds, watermelon, onions, pumpkins, sweet potatoes and other root vegetables, eggplant, sweet and hot peppers, okra, salad greens, papayas, breadfruit, and many more.
Started in 1971, the St. Croix Agricultural & Food Fair was the idea of local farmer Rudy Shulterbrandt to be held over the 3-day Presidents’ Day weekend. It would feature not just local farm products
but also produce from other Caribbean islands. On the spacious grounds at the Virgin Islands Department of Agriculture, mid-island on Queen Mary Highway, the fair attracts thousands of visitors, for many reasons, at low entrance fees. Among the reasons for its success are:
• A food contest of typical native main course selections available for sale to eat in place and take home. Equally popular are desserts. The winning creative cook, usually a highly reputed matron, has the food pavilion named for her.
• The displays of fresh vegetables and fruit for sale provide a great opportunity to shop for local produce at reasonable cost. The fair always features stands with herbs and spices, also local honey and condiments.
• The kids love the live animals, most in cages, that are also judged in a livestock contest, from rabbits, goats, ducks, chickens and cows. We even have a special local cattle breed named Senepol.
• A large number of booths selling refreshments and snacks offer satisfying treats.
• Numerous booths feature trinkets for sale, including local crafts, clothing, jewelry, baskets, jams and jellies, as well as potted plants .
• The fair includes numerous creative exhibits by local schools, many documenting the interest in agriculture shown by students at various ages.
• Many local businesses know that their presence at the fair is great publicity, Some offer promotional items.
• The Department of health has a tented location that features health checkups, flu shots, and other services.
• To the delight of every local attendee, musical entertainment, by renowned bands like Stanley and the Sleepless Knights, is available for free.
• Important for the reputations of the island’s many farmers is the support from the government offered by the fair. A Farmer of the Year contest and a Livestock Farmer of the Year are coveted trophies.
• While the fair provides entertainment plus an enjoyable social time, the message it also conveys is encouragement of all efforts to promote a healthy diet. That is not easy for many of us. The Department of Agriculture provides brochures outlining a balanced way for healthy eating.
• University of the Virgin Islands has a display detailing its farming division that supports farming careers.
Now, if you are here at another time than the Ag Fair, as we who live here call the event, don’t despair! You will have the opportunity to sample a variety of stands on the island. Page 33 lists several vendors of local produce! Some have plants for sale, some local eggs, goat cheese, home-baked bread, and occasionally a special treat of chocolate pudding fruit or bacuba mini-bananas.
Our climate, terrain and soil have combined to create a hospitable environment for growing crops. With help from federal agencies, diligent farmers can minimize the impact of any extended weather afflictions. @viagrifest

Waldemar Brodhurst
WLocal Art Local Art COVER STORIES
aldemar Brodhurst is an artist born and raised on St. Croix whose artwork is made from found and recycled materials. His subjects, human, animal and folkloric, are infused with their own unique vitality and self-expression.
Waldemar is a fourth generation Brodhurst of Danish and Puerto Rican decent. His work is deeply rooted in and created from stories derived from his lived experience as a Crucian community member. Cultural and historical icons appear regularly in life sized forms and in small table-top iterations of Moko Jumbies and the Three Queens of St. Croix's historical Fire Burn.
Revered environmental favorites such as turtles, birds, and iguanas are celebrated through thoughtful wire forms with glimmering sea glass eyes. Fairies and mermaids appear in small glimpses of play or life-sized figures demanding respect and honor through their depictions of beauty and sensuality.
Waldemar first began expressing himself through art after his mother's death, which deeply affected him. He struggled for years until he found the ability to channel and release his feelings into sculptures. His work, and the man himself, are a testament to the transformative power of art.
The first sculptures were small, hand-held explorations but his popularity and artistic vision quickly grew. Today, his energized work can be seen all over the island and the world in public spaces and private collections with sculptures reaching 10 ft or more. But it is in his female figures that we see a deeply held respect and admiration for the strength of women. These expressions were formed by the courage he witnessed in his own mother.
The work of Waldemar Brodhurst is being celebrated at the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts (CMCArts) in the solo exhibition "Wire Art/Crucian Stories" on view from February 8 through March 29. An exhibition catalog capturing this exhibition is available at the CMCArts Museum Store and at cmcarts.org. Waldemr Brodhurst
I am a 5th-generation Crucian of Puerto Rican/Taino Indian, West African and European descent. I hold a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from Brooks Institute, a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from Duquesne University, and am an alumna of the Shipboard’s Education, Semester-at-Sea, study abroad program. My commercial work has been featured in Architectural Digest, Vogue.com, Travel + Leisure, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Sunday Times (UK) among others.
During 2017-18,, I taught photography at my alma mater, The Good Hope Country Day School. My first solo exhibit, The Traveling Lense, at MacheteMachete Gallery in Christiansted, was central to finding my voice as an artist. I was also the 2018 resident artist at Henle Fine Arts in Christiansted, where I exhibited the Sands of Time, a photo essay on my travels to Egypt and Jordan.
A traveler
at heart, I have visited 6 continents, 59 countries, and over 190 cities across the globe. I am a social/spiritual activist, avid reader and, when I’m not traveling or shooting on location, I am a level II salsa dancer, love being in nature, and find peace and tranquility on my yoga mat.
The untimely passing of my father, Lt. Colonel, David C. Canegata III, who was tragically killed in combat while serving in Iraq,
pushed
me to live more fully and embrace my passion, purchasing my first digital SLR camera shortly after.
My life also changed during my Semester-at -Sea experience, visiting 10 countries and being inspired to prioritize travel in my life. I am passionate about speaking through my lens and giving a voice to the people, places, and stories that I document.
I’m honored to be the March cover artist for ST. CROIX
WEEK, with one of my scenic photos of Buck Island. My next solo photography exhibit, Through Her Own Lens, at Cane Roots Art Gallery, Company Street, Christiansted, opens March 7 and runs through April 4.

Our Danish Connection
The Scandinavian country of Denmark was among the European contenders for ownership of Caribbean islands and acquired St. Thomas in 1660, St. John in 1718, and St. Croix, purchased from France in 1733.
Denmark left its mark here in many ways that have contributed to a close relationship between Danes and the U.S. Virgin Islands following the 1917 Transfer, bringing thousands of Danish visitors. Examples of this closeness are:
• The handsome, still functioning 18th and 19th century architecture – official, commercial and private, built of Danish brick brought as ship ballast.
• Ruins of many plantation structures that once produced sugar and rum, particularly former windmills that ground sugar cane.
• The presence of four churches of the Danish Lutheran denomination, with special sections for Danish gravesites in two old cemeteries.
• Many African heritage and mixed blood families carrying Danish last names, even the use of historic Danish first names for Crucian children.
• A Friends of Denmark organization that enjoys exchange-visit festivals with its sister society in Denmark, the Danish West Indian Society.
• Access on the internet to over 5 million documents in the Danish archives relevant to the Danish West Indies, as our islands were called.
• A friendly Crucian population that welcomes and looks out for visiting Danes. If you happen to be a visiting Dane, we bid you Velkommen!
70 illustrated articles from the pages of this magazine, 2009-2019, documenting in English and Danish the legacy of Denmark’s imprint on our culture. Undercover Books and Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts, $20.
After a Long Hiatus, a Special Group of Danes Return to the VI
By Nina York
Virgin Islanders and Danes alike are fond of traditions but, at times, we are forced to allow nature’s interference. Since 1969, four years after the founding of the friendship organization St. Croix Friends of Denmark, Virgin Islanders have enjoyed hospitality in an exchange festival with its sister society in Denmark, the Danish West Indian Society. Despite 107 years since the U.S. purchase of our three islands for $25 million in 1917, a mutual affection exists among the two cultures and society members. The biennial Festivals serve to augment and preserve that bond.
Who are these special Danes, and why are they coming to the VI? Since its founding in1917 right after Transfer, DWIS members had served the Danish miliary and administration in our islands, maintaining friendships reminiscing about the good old days here. Later, at the semi-centennial in 1967 a large group arrived with sentimental attachment to the former Danish colony and evoked such enthusiasm that two years later, the relatively new Friends of Denmark Societies on St. Croix and St. Thomas were invited for 8 days in Denmark, accepted by over 100 Virgin Islanders.
Membership in Denmark today includes few direct descendants of original DWIS individuals, a few of West Indian ancestry. Since 1969, with rare exceptions for hurricanes and a pandemic, the Friendship Festivals have alternated every two years. On St. Croix this year, our hospitality involves the Danes staying with us Crucians in our homes from March 29 to April 4 and, for them as a group, learning about the island’s culture and nature for a week, followed by a week in St. Thomas at a hotel.
What is the appeal of visiting a place once a part of Denmark so long ago? As mentioned, we love traditions, and many remain of the Danish era in St. Croix from 1733 to 1917. Not all happy times, but the impressive architecture in our towns is testimony to a once prosperous time. The historic Lutheran churches and services that retain old Danish features appeal to the otherwise not churchgoing Danes. Seeing the use of the Dannebrog flag is an emotional experience for many, as is the frequent encounter of Danish last names, even though the person is a Virgin Islander. Royalty is found in street names. And let us not forget that a tropical location, scenery and climate are not found in northerly Denmark!
Welcome to our friends of the Danish West Indian Society, some of them repeat visitors of many years, most recently 2019, some here for the first time. Velkommen!

Teddy Seymour
He Sailed Around the World Just To Do It!
Aboard his 35-foot Ericson, MK I, Alberg hull design, full keel, fiberglass boat, Love Song, Teddy Seymour circumnavigated the earth, making only 12 stops. On February 24, 1986, after years of preparation, Seymour began his sailing trip from his home port of Frederiked, St. Croix. He finished his trip exactly where he had started a year and a half later!
Born in Yonkers, New York, in 1941, Teddy was fascinated with the Hudson River from a young age, leading him to build a raft and drift down the river at the age of 13. Seymour received a track and field scholarship to Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio, where he became an All American Cross Country runner, but joined the Marines after graduation and served for seven years, including in Vietnam, before resigning honorably as a Captain. After a managerial position at American Can Company in California, he graduated with a Masters in Recreation Administra tion from California State University.
Seymour learned to sail in Newport Beach and lived aboard a small Columbia for almost five years before purchasing Love Song. After relocating to the Virgin Islands, where he took a job as a primary school teacher, Seymour began planning his journey. It took seven years of paying off $62,000 in bank loans for the purchase and preparation of his sailboat before Seymour left St. Croix, headed for the Panama Canal.
On June 19, 1987, 16 months after he began his world voyage, he dropped anchor back in his home harbor at Frederiksted, St. Croix, USVI, and became the first African American to complete a solo circumnavigation of the world.
The Virgin Islands Legislature enacted a resolution to preserve his contribution into Virgin Islands maritime history and, since then, has been honored each year with the Toast-To-The-Captain Race on St. Croix, this year on Saturday, February 8. Details in Events Calendar.

7 FLAG HISTORY HISTORIC & HELPFUL INFORMATION
HISTORY is what this island has an abundance of, going back several thousand years. Back then, the Amerindian population that had migrated here from South America called it Ay Ay. A tribe known as Caribs lent their name to the region and was encountered at Salt River in 1493 by the first Europeans, the 17ship fleet of Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to the new world. He claimed the island for Spain and called it Santa Cruz, the Spanish version of its present name.
Known as the Danish West India and Guinea Company, it excelled in sugar cultivation and export made possible by slave trade from West Africa, a necessity for developing a large-scale operation of sugar cane harvests, for which this island was ideally suited thanks to its terrain and rainfall.
Over the following centuries, many European nations started exploiting the Caribbean archipelago, with the British, Dutch, and French joining Spain in taking possession of the rich resources found in some of the islands, battling pirates that posed a dramatic challenge to the treasures derived from mineral resources. But agriculture, in the form of sugar cane cultivation, turned out to be a winning formula, as sugar, and its by-product rum, were incredibly valuable crops.
In no time, the island was transformed, with forests giving way to planted sugar cane fields by thousands of enslaved persons who, after being brought here under horrific conditions, toiled in the fields under the hot sun. The island’s cane fields and accompanying estate structures were owned by an assortment of nationalities, with the English, Scots and Irish dominating, but the military and administration was run by Danes, after the island ownership was conferred to the Danish king in 1771.
Soon, a lot of money was made here, but at a high cost of human life. The island posed health risks from tropical diseases and poor hygienic standards and opposition to the cruel treatment of the enslaved eventually brought about emancipation in 1848, several years after the British-owned islands had initiated it. But the fact that cane sugar was not so valuable since beet sugar now competed with it made conditions worse, and a revolt in 1878 led to further decline.
Whether renting a car or crossing the street, it is vital to remember that traffic in the USVI flows from the left side of the road. St. Croix has two towns—Christiansted at the center on the North Shore and Frederiksted at the West End. The Caribbean Sea, which surrounds the island, is always there to guide you along the roads that wind around the coast.
Car rental agencies have a variety of vehicles available from sporty jeeps to roomy air-conditioned sedans, vans, and SUVs. The average price usually includes unlimited mileage but you fill the tank upon return! Both US and other driver’s licenses are recognized. The driver and front seat passenger are required by law to use seat belts and cell phone talking or texting is not allowed.
Parking in Christiansted is limited. There is daytime parking in the National Park Service lot near Ft. Christiansvaern, until 4:30 pm, and a public lot with fees on Strand and King Cross Street. Running from mid-island west to within 1 mile of Frederiksted is the 4-lane, divided Melvin H. Evans Highway. The speed limit is 55. In other areas, the 35 mph limit applies; in town, 20 mph unless otherwise posted.
DRIVE LEFT WORSHIP
St. Croix’s history is mirrored in its old church structures. The Moravian brethren, arriving here in the 1730s from Saxony in today’s Germany, founded their mission to bring Christianity to the enslaved part of the population.
Under changing ownership by the Dutch, British and French, including a brief ownership by the Knights of Malta, this island did not prosper, and it was sparsely colonized. The French, that owned it from the mid-1600’s and gave it its present name, actually abandoned it around 1700 having failed at developing a viable plantation economy. For over 30 years St. Croix returned to its natural state, when a business enterprise of the little Scandinavian nation of Denmark, that since 1666 had taken possession of St. Thomas and later St. John to the north of St. Croix, in 1733 made the decision to expand and purchase this island from the French.
So the islands of the Danish West Indies, as the three were called, were a sad sight and, in the early 20th century when WW1 was underway, the United States took interest in us for our strategic location, particularly as the Panama Canal had just been completed, and Germany was threatening to take possession of us. At a price of $25 million in gold, the transfer of the islands, to be known as the United States Virgin Islands, took place on March 31, 1917. And, the rest is History, of a different kind.
The historic Anglican (Episcopalian) churches built in Gothic style include St. John’s in Christiansted and, in Frederiksted, St. Paul’s church. The large number of Irish settlers, along with Englishmen and Hispanics, have contributed to the presence of the Catholic church; Holy Cross in Christiansted is the oldest in the Virgin Islands. The Danish rule of the island from 1733 to 1917 brought the Lutheran church, which still plays a large role here. Lord God of Sabaoth in Christiansted occupies the former Dutch Reformed Church; Holy Trinity in Frederiksted was built shortly after the town was founded. The Dutch Reformed church (Presbyterian) now has a new mid-island home.
There are 150 churches on St. Croix, from Seventh-Day Adventist to Methodist, Baptist, Church of God, and many more. Church attendance and activities are important to a large part of our population; visitors are always welcome at services, often a high point in their island experience. Many other faiths offer places of worship—a Jewish synagogue, a Hindu temple, and a Muslim mosque, to name a few. A church listing can be found in the yellow pages of our local phone book beginning on Page 35.

CHRISTIANSTED WALKING TOUR
Let’s start a leisurely walking tour of Christiansted at the site of the Old Scale House on the harborfront, known as the Wharf. This is one of a complex of five buildings comprising the Christiansted National Historic Site, established in 1952, administered by the National Park Service. The Welcome Center and Park Store is newly reopened here from 10am to 4pm, 7 days a week (closed from Noon-1pm for lunch). Site brochures are available along with books, maps and souvenirs.
Nearby, The Old Customs House with its sweeping staircase, on the grassy area next to the Fort, was completed in 1830. It now holds National Park Service offices.
Fort Christiansvaern was the first public building to be started by the Danes after the island was purchased from France in 1733. It is built of Danish yellow brick and was completed in 1749 and later expanded. Its present appearance reflects the 1830’s period. It is open Monday through Friday from 8:30am – 4:30pm. The adjacent Fort Parking Lot is open from 8am – 5pm and hours are strictly enforced. Coming soon is a daily $10.00 parking lot usage fee collected by an automated cashless machine at the entrance, accepting only debit and credit cards.
The Steeple Building across Hospital Street, formerly the Lutheran Church, dates from 1753. This site, on the Walking Tour, is currently closed for renovation.
Across Company Street lies the onetime Danish West India & Guinea Company Warehouse, built in 1749 as a storage facility for hundreds of barrels of sugar and rum. In its courtyard, slave auctions were formerly held.
Originally, Government House on King Street, was built as a home for a Danish merchant. That section dates from 1749; another section, the previous town house of a wealthy Danish plantation owner, was joined to it in 1826, together becoming the seat of the Danish West Indies government. The grand staircase and portico were added in 1830, as was the impressive ballroom/reception hall on the second floor by Governor General Peter von Scholten, who had his office and official residence here. Due to COVID-19 restrictions tours of the site have temporarily been suspended.
The Lord God of Sabaoth Lutheran Church across Queen Cross Street on King Street was originally the Dutch Reformed Church, built in the 1740’s and transferred to the Lutherans in 1831, who brought the furnishings here from the Steeple Building. Later, the steeple was added.
Across on King Street is the historic Lutheran Parish Hall, and in the courtyard the former Pastor’s residence.
Walking up Queen Cross Street to Company Street takes you to Apothecary Hall on the left corner. Opened in 1828 by Danish pharmacist Peder Eggers Bentzon, the town’s first pharmacy remained here until 1970.
Nearby on Company Street is the Old Market , laid out in the original town plan from 1735 and still being used. The well dates from 1863. On this square you will also find the downtown Post Office.
Established in 1952, Christiansted National Historic Site was the first unit of the National Park System in the US Virgin Islands. The park’s historic buidings and grounds commemorate the Danish heritage (1733-1917) of the town of Christiansted, St. Croix, which was named in honor of the reigning King of Denmark and Norway, Christian VI. In the 1700s, Christiansted was part of a mercantile system that linked Europe,West Africa, and the Caribbean in the infamous “Triangular Trade.”
Christiansted was the first town in the Lesser Antilles to be built on the grid system and to have a building code. Its distinctive colonial architecture reflects the town’s status as capital of the Danish West Indies (1755-1871); the great wealth generated by the export of cane sugar, molasses, and rum; and the influence of government building inspectors.
Frederiksted Map Frederiksted Map
Your tour of Frederiksted begins at Fort Frederik by the cruise ship pier and waterfront park. Construction on the Fort began in 1752 and was completed in 1760. Featuring a museum with several permanent exhibits, and an art gallery, it is open Monday – Friday, 8:30 am to 4 pm. Admission $5., children under 12 free.
A public beach with showers and bathrooms is next to Fort Frederik.
Governor General Peter von Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the enslaved population in the Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848, from adjacent Buddhoe Park named for the renowned slave rebellion leader, a bust of whom is displayed there.
The Oscar E. Henry Customs House was built in the 1800s. The Freedom Fountain , facing the pier, was installed for the Emancipation’s 150th Anniversary Celebration.
After severe damage during a labor insurrection in 1878, parts of the town were rebuilt in Victorian style. Victoria House , on Strand Street, preserves the Frederiksted architecture of that time.
The Visitor’s Bureau is located upstairs on Strand Street above the Frederiksted Mall and next door to the historic light blue building housing the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts Free admission to exhibits and gift shop.
Frederiksted is home to several historic churches, including St. Paul’s Episcopal Church , Holy Tr inity Lutheran Church , Friedensberg Moravian Church , and St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church .
The handsomely restored Arthur Abel Complex , formerly The Danish School (1799), is now the office of the Lieutenant Governor in Frederiksted at Hospital and Market Street. At Strand and Queen Cross Streets is the Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library , built in 1803. Just behind it lies the Dorsch Theater , an open-air stage and event site. The Market Place , is still in use today, as it was in 1751 at the founding of Frederiksted.

SAVE WHIM MUSEUM
Cultural Heritage Preservation, Keeping the Discussion Going
By Michael Connors, PhD
On May 1, 2024, the Save Whim Museum
Advocacy Group (SWM) received a telephone call from National Trust for Historic Preservation (NTHP) Directors Tiffany Tolbert and Jennifer Sandy. They announced that Save Whim Museum Advocacy Group’s application for Whim Museum’s nomination to 2024’s List of the 11 Most Endangered Historic Places in America was successful. This meant Whim Museum, the U.S. Virgin Islands’ first museum, was placed on NTHP’s Most Endangered List for 2024. As we enter the new year, it is crucial to review what has and has not been accomplished to save our precious museum.
Many Crucians, island residents, and learned historians wrote NTHP with letters of support for the 2024 nomination, emphasizing the historical and cultural importance of Whim Museum. Although this nomination to 2024’s Endangered List was an honor, it’s a dubious distinction in that it tells the tale of a valuable historically significant site that is in grave danger of being destroyed and in desperate need of immediate attention. Most St. Croix residents know from watching the deterioration and disintegration of Whim’s buildings and structures that the museum’s demolition is due to what appears to be purposeful neglect.
University of the Virgin Islands Professor Olasee Davis, wrote, “It is disheartening to see the state of Estate Whim Museum today. As an American, we cannot allow such a rich cultural history of Estate Whim to deteriorate in the dust of the Earth. It is a sin not to do anything but save the Whim Estate Museum for future generations. It is the right thing to do for those that make great sacrifices for all of us.”
Donald Jones, Ph.D. a Washington D.C. based Cultural Heritage Consultant who since the 1970s has been involved with the archaeology of enslaved lifeways and plantations wrote, “After 40 years of involvement in the field of cultural heritage preservation, my main point is the simple fact that the ONLY reason these various approaches have been able to be developed, discussed, revised, etc. is because the physical remains have been preserved! Once these sites are demolished or allowed to fall into ruin beyond recognition, the discussion will end, and I strongly believe in looking to the past to help understand the present and inform the future.”
Archaeologist/anthropologist Annalisa Bolin wrote the following in the December 2024 issue of Anthropology Today entitled, Our Monuments:
Reclaiming St. Croix’s elite heritage for descendants of the enslaved. “Indeed, other interlocutors on St. Croix suggested that certain constituency of Crucians would support tearing all such structures down.” Bolin’s research focuses on the politics of heritage in the U.S. Virgin Islands and cites her August 2023 interview with Frandelle Gerard, Executive Director of Crucian Heritage and Nature Tourism, Inc., who said, “There are people who think that . . . we should not be concerned about maintaining the built heritage from the slave era because all it does is remind us about slavery.”
National Trust for Historic Preservation Director Tiffany Tolbert confirmed September 25, 2024, as the date Whim Museum’s director chose for a Zoom meeting with two members of Save Whim Museum Advocacy Group. The meeting took place at the appointed time, but Whim Museum’s director did not call in and offered no excuse for her absence. During the meeting Ms. Tolbert mentioned that she had been in regular communication with the director and had been told of “updates on progress at Whim.” Ms. Tolbert said she didn’t feel comfortable repeating what Whim’s director had told her but two bits of information she felt she could share was that a new tarpaulin was being procured to cover the great house roof, and plans were being discussed to organize a St. Croix Landmarks Society annual meeting. To date neither of these developments have happened.
U.S. Virgin Islands’ Governor Albert Bryant Jr. did take the positive step of removing the responsibility of restoration from Whim Museum’s Board of
Trustees and its director, and by signing a memorandum of understanding assigned the USVI Office of Disaster Recovery to expedite restoration repairs to the museum.
St. Croix was officially designated by Congress as a National Heritage Area, signed into law by President Biden, January 2023. This National Heritage Area designation is the first to be established in any U.S. Territory and formally acknowledges the unique importance of St. Croix’s cultural heritage. It also makes St. Croix eligible for benefits administered by the National Park Service.
The 13-acre Whim Museum complex is owned by the people of the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the V.I. Government is responsible for its upkeep, but ultimately it is Virgin Islanders who will determine whether to save Whim Museum or let it crumble to the ground and become another piece of the island’s forgotten history. For the past seven years the Save Whim Museum organization has advocated saving this unique complex of island history and has begun to apply to nominate Whim Museum for a National Historic Landmark Registration with the U.S. Department of the Interior’s National Park Service
In the interim, Save Whim Museum Advocacy Group continues to work constructively and cooperatively toward achieving the full restoration and preservation of the U.S. Virgin Islands’ first museum, protecting the artifacts and records that help illuminate St. Croix’s unique history of cultural heritage. savewhim@gmail.com

Bright stars and bright planets dominate the evening sky. The beginning of March is the best time to view Mercury as it will be at its highest point above the horizon. Even though it is at its highest point, look for the planet low in the western sky just after sunset.
Higher in the western sky you will easily spot the very bright, white Venus. The planet Venus is the third brightest natural object in the sky, after the Sun and the Moon. As it grows darker, slightly west of almost overhead is another bright plant, not as bright as Venus, but Jupiter is easy to spot. Look high in the eastern sky for the bright red planet, Mars.
Jupiter and Mars can help you find two of the constellations of the zodiac. Jupiter is seen against the background of stars of Taurus, the Bull. The bright reddish-orange star Aldebaran marks the red right eye of the bull. The bull’s head is formed by somewhat faint stars that look like a V laying on its side. Riding on the Bull’s shoulder is a group or cluster of stars, the Pleiades. The star group is also known as the Seven Sisters, since some people can see seven stars there. The sisters were the seven daughters of Atlas and the sea-nymph Pleione.
The hours of daylight and night will be about equal all over the Earth on March 20th. This is the Equinox, the beginning of Spring in the Northern Hemisphere and Autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. The Sun will be over the Earth’s equator. VIEW THE MAP SO THAT THE NORTH INDICATOR IS FACING NORTH
Modern observation has revealed that there are some 1,000 stars in this star cluster.
Mars is seen against the stars of Gemini, the Twins. Just east of Mars are two brights stars, Castor and Pollux which mark the heads of the twin brothers. According to mythology, the Twins accompanied Jason and the Argonauts on their famous voyage in search of the Golden Fleece.
East of Mars and Gemini is the constellation Leo, the Lion, with the bright star Regulus marking the Lion. A backwards question mark of fainter stars marks the head and the front of the lion. There are many stories relating to Leo, perhaps the best known of which is that this is the lion slain by Hercules as the first of his famous labors.
High in the southern sky are the seven bright stars that form Orion, the Hunter: two, Betelgeuse and Bellatrix mark the Hunter’s shoulders; two more, Saiph and Rigel his knees; and three fainter stars close together in a line form the Hunter’s belt. East of Orion and lower in the sky look for a very bright star, Sirius. Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky and marks Canis Major, the Large Hunting Dog. About halfway between Sirius and
Castor and Pollux is another somewhat bright star. This is Procyon and it marks Canis Minor, the Small Hunting Dog.
Low near the southern horizon is another bright star, Canopus, the second brightest star in the night sky.
As the night goes on, the spinning of the Earth causes the stars move across from east to west. By 10:30 p.m. or later, look toward the northern sky for the seven bright stars that form the Big Dipper. Three stars form its handle and four more it bowl.
On the night of March 13th to 14th there will be a total Lunar Eclipse, as the Moon passes through the Earth’s shadow. As seen from the Virgin Islands the eclipse will begin on March 13th at 11:57 p.m. The maximum of the eclipse on the 14th at 2:58 a.m. and the eclipse ends at 6:00 a.m. Unlike eclipses of the Sun, eclipses of the Moon are very slow events, the duration of the eclipse is six hours and three minutes.
