St. Croix, the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, sits to the south of our small island chain and is renowned for its pastoral landscapes, Danish architecture and historical landmarks. With its offshore wrecks and unbelievably beautiful underwater reefs, St. Croix is also a popular destination for diving enthusiasts. Be sure to visit the historic towns of Frederiksted and Christiansted and indulge in St. Croix’s renowned art and delicious culinary scenes.
St. John is one of the smaller U.S. Virgin Islands and conservation center of the territory. It is best known for its pristine beaches and the attractions within the Virgin Islands National Park, which occupies more than half the island. The lands in the Virgin Islands National Park shelter migrant birds and the mangroves support corals and anemones. As with all the Virgin islands, you will find that St. John provides a rich mix of our culture and history.
St. Thomas is our business and shopping center and the seat of government. Charlotte Amalie is the capital town of the U.S. Virgin Islands and is one of the busiest ports of call for cruise ships in the Caribbean. St. Thomas is among the most popular destinations in the Caribbean for sailing and yachting enthusiasts.
Water Island is the smallest of the U.S. Virgin Islands and rests just off the coast of St. Thomas. It is mostly residential but offers fun attractions like Honeymoon Beach and quaint accommodations. The island can be reached by ferry from the Crown Bay Marina or by other vessels.

Mr. Patrick Smith, aka “Panto,” has brought a fresh new style to the art world of St. Croix and I am proud to host his first solo art show, says Sonia Deane, gallery owner. He paints vividly from memories of his birth island, Tortola, and St. Thomas, where he was a musician; he currently resides on St. Croix. He draws the viewer in with his play on colors. There is certain emotion that is conveyed when an artist paints from memory without boundaries. Panto does that. Over the years, we’ve remained a small group of artisans dedicated to creating feel-good jewelry that resonates with joy and meaning. CCT Celebrates its 40th Season! CCT Celebrates its 40th Season!
Who doesn't love live entertainment?
Whether you get excited just thinking about a lively musical to sing along with, a side-splitting farce to lift you up with laughter or a poignant dramatic story to stir your thoughts and emotions, Caribbean Community Theatre (fondly called “CCT”) has delivered these gems to audiences on St. Croix for a whopping 40 years! We can't believe it's been that long! It seems like just the other day (1985) that we were painting and cleaning the building on Strand Street (now an empty parking lot behind Crucian Gold) and getting ready for CCT’s production of A Christmas Carol.
Since then, CCT has continued to produce thought-provoking material such as The Agitators, Blues for an Alabama Sky, Fences, The Mountaintop, and A Raisin in the Sun, along with knee-slapping comedies like The Odd Couple, Boeing Boeing, Rumors, to name a few, and intriguing mysteries like The Uninvited and The Game’s Afoot. CCT has also proudly produced many plays by local playwrights and authors including Liberated, Sarah & Addie, and Sundays at Eleven. Musicals such as Ain’t Misbehavin’, Cabaret, Chicago, The Color Purple, Dreamgirls, Evita, Into the Woods, Once Upon a Mattress, RENT, and Smokey Joe’s Café invite participation by local singers,
musicians, directors, dancers and choreographers, as well as collaboration with off-island creatives.
Surviving setbacks such as hurricanes, the Covid pandemic, and more “drama” over the last 39 years, CCT has changed venues numerous times during its first 20 years. Since 2003, CCT has been
ensconced at #18 Estate Orange Grove in Christiansted. and its members and volunteers happily continue to present live theatrical performances for children and adults from November to June each season. CCT has operated through the hard work, passion, and creative vision of hundreds of volunteers through our many decades and various locations. Some of our volunteers have been with us for over three decades. Second and third generations have been involved with CCT lending their talent, skills, and curiosity for live theatre on stage or behind the scenes “trodding the boards.” We always welcome new volunteers who are excited about crafting wonderful live theatrical entertainment on St. Croix.
By last count, CCT has produced over 200 different adult shows, and at least 30 shows performed by the students of The Calico Cat Company, CCT’s after-school theatre program for children ages seven to twelve. Instructors Heather McRae and Kaila Francis teach acting, improv, movement, stagecraft, teamwork and more to the developing drama students, who learn creativity, confidence, communication, problem solving, collaboration, dedication, perseverance, and conclude each
semester with a matinee performance on the CCT stage. Each new season allows us to inspire artistic creation, discover new works, and rediscover familiar favorites.

I was born and raised in Tortola, BVI, the second of nine children born to Gerald and Ursula Smith. I had two brothers and six sisters. The arts have been present in my life from the time of my early youth and I engaged in drawing and illustration as a boy along with many other creative interests.
I had a special interest in the musical arts, which is a trait gotten from my father and his side of the family, who were very talented singers, even having a well-known local band. I would compose and sing my own songs while also learning musical instruments, as I came of age, listening to greats such as Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer.
I played the bass guitar, the organ, and the electric guitar while periodically painting and exploring the world of art. After relocating to St. Thomas from Tortola and losing my apartment to Hurricane Maria, I moved again to St. Croix and now live in the Herbert Grigg Home for the Aged.
After an injury left me unable to use my right arm and a stroke affecting my speech, I turned my attention to art. I have been painting various art pieces and get the inspiration from my memories of life’s experiences. Art gives me relief and I get lost on the canvas; each stroke of the paint brush is like that of a meditation.
Each new painting to me now is my greatest form of communication, created from a place of generosity and using each one as my voice; I love how it helps me “speak.”

I’m very excited to be showing my work in the annual Artists Guild of St. Croix show. This is held at the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts with a free opening reception held on January 11, 2025 after which the show runs until February 1st.

I have studied sculpture, photography, and printmaking in New York, Florida, and Florence, Italy. I received an Imaging Science degree from Rochester Institute of Technology and had a career in computerized digital prepress.
My media is primarily Digital Photo Editing which is printed as an archival Giclée to canvas. I love capturing and enhancing everyday scenes using ultra vibrant Caribbean colors, rich texturing, and an impressionistic style.

Our Danish Connection
The Scandinavian country of Denmark was among the European contenders for ownership of Caribbean islands and acquired St. Thomas in 1660, St. John in 1718, and St. Croix, purchased from France in 1733.
Denmark left its mark here in many ways that have contributed to a close relationship between Danes and the U.S. Virgin Islands following the 1917 Transfer, bringing thousands of Danish visitors. Examples of this closeness are:
• The handsome, still functioning 18th and 19th century architecture – official, commercial and private, built of Danish brick brought as ship ballast.
• Ruins of many plantation structures that once produced sugar and rum, particularly former windmills that ground sugar cane.
• The presence of four churches of the Danish Lutheran denomination, with special sections for Danish gravesites in two old cemeteries.
• Many African heritage and mixed blood families carrying Danish last names, even the use of historic Danish first names for Crucian children.
• A Friends of Denmark organization that enjoys exchange-visit festivals with its sister society in Denmark, the Danish West Indian Society.
• Access on the internet to over 5 million documents in the Danish archives relevant to the Danish West Indies, as our islands were called.
• A friendly Crucian population that welcomes and looks out for visiting Danes. If you happen to be a visiting Dane, we bid you Velkommen!

A Lot of History on a 4-acre Little Island

Almost every visitor to St. Croix will have observed a charming little island in Christiansted harbor and the little ferry from the Boardwalk underway on a 2-minute ride there. This is a convenient spot with downtown residents and hotel guests for an enjoyable beach trip. A small hotel there, originally built in 1965, recently refurbished by the owners of King Christian Hotel, may elicit visions of Don’t Stop the Carnival, Herman Wouk’s classic novel portraying the comedy of running a resort on a little tropical island. During Holiday season, the traditional Lighted Boat Parade and festive fireworks are focused on this scenic area. Check our events calendar for details.
Known as Protestant Cay, the name tells a story going back several hundred years when France
owned St. Croix. The Catholic government interred deceased residents of other denominations there. and traces of gravesites can still be found. But the main use of the island then was for careening boats for cleaning hulls and repairs, and the island was
called La Carenage. The harbor was already busy then and was the site of conflicts between pirates although they never took over St. Croix. The narrow channel bordered by the corals of Long Reef made navigation risky and, when France sold St. Croix in 1733 to a Danish trading company, the greatly increased traffic led to a harbor pilot being appointed and a residence for him constructed on the Cay (the word means small island). The traffic included ships bringing loads of enslaved Africans to be auctioned to the highest bidder, also bricks from Denmark as ballast, and loads of merchandise and provisions, and passengers from nearby St. Thomas on the Vigilant, the famed sailing ship ferry that sank in the harbor in a 1928 hurricane. All cargo arriving and leaving had to be weighed at the .Scale House and duty paid. The Danes called the Cay Lodskaien, lods meaning pilot in Danish.
As a defense against enemy attack, a battery equipped with cannon was installed and given a noblewoman’s name Sofia Frederika. Another noblewoman’s name Louise Augusta was given to a battery on the opposite point of the harbor entrance that later held a lighthouse and in modern times, after the Transfer to the United States, became home to the island’s first radio station in 1930. Altogether, the protection of St. Croix is centered on this important area of the coral reef that is so vital and so much at risk.

DDive Experience has been doing dive trips and teaching all kinds of dive courses for the last 41 years. We have worked with the local and federal government on many projects and have received many awards. Lately, we have been working with two different coral preservation groups helping to restore or repair corals in the waters of St. Croix.
Sam Halvorson, employed by Dive Experience for over 36 years, has been the eyes into our daily dives. As an accomplished cameraman, he has filmed hundreds of our dive tours for the website and as personal videos, but a little known secret is, he is a phenomenal watercolor artist! He has a wide assortment of water color paintings, most of fish and corals, but also the land life such as birds, lizards, and moko jumbies for purchase. One
of his most famous paintings is a dive location scene called “turtle ridge,” now available on a SPF l/s shirt!
Another artist on board is Justin Benson, who has designed towels, hats, and SPF shirts and leggings full of colorful underwater scenes. A long time art teacher on St Croix, Trudi Gilliam, has a collection of metal sculpture on display, from small ornamental fish to complete ocean scenes. David Duneley is famous, in the states, for doing wall murals of underwater scenes and we carry his popular fish design shirts! All of this is available at the dive center!

Christopher Columbus landed here in 1493 at the site of Salt River Bay. Take the road to the left of Salt River Marina. Minimal facilities. Right next to Ft. Frederik, it is a favorite of cruise ship passengers. Convenient parking and changing facilities.
Rainbow Beach
North of Frederiksted, this is a lively beach with bar and restaurant. West End Watersports offers Jet Ski, Sea Scooter, Kayak, and Paddle Board rentals. Live music on Sunday afternoons. A local favorite!
Reef Beach
Right next to Duggan’s Reef Restaurant on the East End is a nice slip-of-a-beach. With a very gradual decline, the beach is perfect for windsurfing or for swimming with small children. The Reef Golf Course is across the street.
Sandy Point
Located on St. Croix’s West End, this spectacular beach is part of Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge and is one the longest in the Caribbean! Leatherback Turtle nesting is underway now and the beach is closed to the public until the first week in September. Follow on Facebook.

Deep and lush, this beach is located inside the entrance to The Buccaneer Hotel; the guard gate attendant to the right will let you through. Park at the end of the road. No facilities; some shade trees. A local favorite.

7 FLAG HISTORY HISTORIC & HELPFUL INFORMATION
HISTORY is what this island has an abundance of, going back several thousand years. Back then, the Amerindian population that had migrated here from South America called it Ay Ay. A tribe known as Caribs lent their name to the region and was encountered at Salt River in 1493 by the first Europeans, the 17ship fleet of Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to the new world. He claimed the island for Spain and called it Santa Cruz, the Spanish version of its present name.
Known as the Danish West India and Guinea Company, it excelled in sugar cultivation and export made possible by slave trade from West Africa, a necessity for developing a large-scale operation of sugar cane harvests, for which this island was ideally suited thanks to its terrain and rainfall.
Over the following centuries, many European nations started exploiting the Caribbean archipelago, with the British, Dutch, and French joining Spain in taking possession of the rich resources found in some of the islands, battling pirates that posed a dramatic challenge to the treasures derived from mineral resources. But agriculture, in the form of sugar cane cultivation, turned out to be a winning formula, as sugar, and its by-product rum, were incredibly valuable crops.
In no time, the island was transformed, with forests giving way to planted sugar cane fields by thousands of enslaved persons who, after being brought here under horrific conditions, toiled in the fields under the hot sun. The island’s cane fields and accompanying estate structures were owned by an assortment of nationalities, with the English, Scots and Irish dominating, but the military and administration was run by Danes, after the island ownership was conferred to the Danish king in 1771.
Soon, a lot of money was made here, but at a high cost of human life. The island posed health risks from tropical diseases and poor hygienic standards and opposition to the cruel treatment of the enslaved eventually brought about emancipation in 1848, several years after the British-owned islands had initiated it. But the fact that cane sugar was not so valuable since beet sugar now competed with it made conditions worse, and a revolt in 1878 led to further decline.
Whether renting a car or crossing the street, it is vital to remember that traffic in the USVI flows from the left side of the road. St. Croix has two towns—Christiansted at the center on the North Shore and Frederiksted at the West End. The Caribbean Sea, which surrounds the island, is always there to guide you along the roads that wind around the coast.
Car rental agencies have a variety of vehicles available from sporty jeeps to roomy air-conditioned sedans, vans, and SUVs. The average price usually includes unlimited mileage but you fill the tank upon return! Both US and other driver’s licenses are recognized. The driver and front seat passenger are required by law to use seat belts and cell phone talking or texting is not allowed.
Parking in Christiansted is limited. There is daytime parking in the National Park Service lot near Ft. Christiansvaern, until 4:30 pm, and a public lot with fees on Strand and King Cross Street. Running from mid-island west to within 1 mile of Frederiksted is the 4-lane, divided Melvin H. Evans Highway. The speed limit is 55. In other areas, the 35 mph limit applies; in town, 20 mph unless otherwise posted.

St. Croix’s history is mirrored in its old church structures. The Moravian brethren, arriving here in the 1730s from Saxony in today’s Germany, founded their mission to bring Christianity to the enslaved part of the population.
Under changing ownership by the Dutch, British and French, including a brief ownership by the Knights of Malta, this island did not prosper, and it was sparsely colonized. The French, that owned it from the mid-1600’s and gave it its present name, actually abandoned it around 1700 having failed at developing a viable plantation economy. For over 30 years St. Croix returned to its natural state, when a business enterprise of the little Scandinavian nation of Denmark, that since 1666 had taken possession of St. Thomas and later St. John to the north of St. Croix, in 1733 made the decision to expand and purchase this island from the French.
So the islands of the Danish West Indies, as the three were called, were a sad sight and, in the early 20th century when WW1 was underway, the United States took interest in us for our strategic location, particularly as the Panama Canal had just been completed, and Germany was threatening to take possession of us. At a price of $25 million in gold, the transfer of the islands, to be known as the United States Virgin Islands, took place on March 31, 1917. And, the rest is History, of a different kind.
The historic Anglican (Episcopalian) churches built in Gothic style include St. John’s in Christiansted and, in Frederiksted, St. Paul’s church. The large number of Irish settlers, along with Englishmen and Hispanics, have contributed to the presence of the Catholic church; Holy Cross in Christiansted is the oldest in the Virgin Islands. The Danish rule of the island from 1733 to 1917 brought the Lutheran church, which still plays a large role here. Lord God of Sabaoth in Christiansted occupies the former Dutch Reformed Church; Holy Trinity in Frederiksted was built shortly after the town was founded. The Dutch Reformed church (Presbyterian) now has a new mid-island home.
There are 150 churches on St. Croix, from Seventh-Day Adventist to Methodist, Baptist, Church of God, and many more. Church attendance and activities are important to a large part of our population; visitors are always welcome at services, often a high point in their island experience. Many other faiths offer places of worship—a Jewish synagogue, a Hindu temple, and a Muslim mosque, to name a few. CLIMATE. Year-round temps are in the 80s during the day, 70s at night, with summer somewhat warmer. Easterly trade winds keep the humidity down. Most showers are over in minutes. Residents collect rainwater from their roof into household cisterns; saltwater distillation plants help the supply. With water scarce, it is used sparingly.
COMMUNICATIONS. We have several radio stations and three television stations. Cable and Dish TV carry the national news. There are the Virgin Islands Daily News (also online) and the online St. Croix Source for local news.

We are part of the US Virgin Islands, located 90 miles East of Puerto Rico, and part of the Antilles chain from the Bahamas down to Trinidad. St. Croix is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea, is 82.8 square miles, 28 miles long x 7 miles wide.
MARINE LIFE. All native plants, animals, fish (unless harvested for food), coral and shells are protected under the Indigenous Species Act. You will not be permitted to leave the territory with any plants or marine life in your possession.

19. Frederiksted Pier – One of St. Croix’s favorite dive locations! Best “muck diving” in the Caribbean! Look for Frog Fish, Seahorses, Bat Fish, Eels, and many schools of fish. This is a shallow dive so you can get an hour or more dive time in.
20. Swirling Reef of Death – This is also a shallow reef area with lots of juvenile reef fish. Just like diving in an aquarium! If you want to go deeper, there is a nice slope to go down.

CHRISTIANSTED WALKING TOUR
Let’s start a leisurely walking tour of Christiansted at the site of the Old Scale House on the harborfront, known as the Wharf. This is one of a complex of five buildings comprising the Christiansted National Historic Site, established in 1952, administered by the National Park Service. The Welcome Center and Park Store is newly reopened here from 10am to 4pm, 7 days a week (closed from Noon-1pm for lunch). Site brochures are available along with books, maps and souvenirs.
Nearby, The Old Customs House with its sweeping staircase, on the grassy area next to the Fort, was completed in 1830. It now holds National Park Service offices.
Fort Christiansvaern was the first public building to be started by the Danes after the island was purchased from France in 1733. It is built of Danish yellow brick and was completed in 1749 and later expanded. Its present appearance reflects the 1830’s period. It is open Monday through Friday from 8:30am – 4:30pm. The adjacent Fort Parking Lot is open from 8am – 5pm and hours are strictly enforced. Coming soon is a daily $10.00 parking lot usage fee collected by an automated cashless machine at the entrance, accepting only debit and credit cards.
The Steeple Building across Hospital Street, formerly the Lutheran Church, dates from 1753. This site, on the Walking Tour, is currently closed for renovation.
Across Company Street lies the onetime Danish West India & Guinea Company Warehouse, built in 1749 as a storage facility for hundreds of barrels of sugar and rum. In its courtyard, slave auctions were formerly held.
Originally, Government House on King Street, was built as a home for a Danish merchant. That section dates from 1749; another section, the previous town house of a wealthy Danish plantation owner, was joined to it in 1826, together becoming the seat of the Danish West Indies government. The grand staircase and portico were added in 1830, as was the impressive ballroom/reception hall on the second floor by Governor General Peter von Scholten, who had his office and official residence here. Due to COVID-19 restrictions tours of the site have temporarily been suspended.
The Lord God of Sabaoth Lutheran Church across Queen Cross Street on King Street was originally the Dutch Reformed Church, built in the 1740’s and transferred to the Lutherans in 1831, who brought the furnishings here from the Steeple Building. Later, the steeple was added.
Across on King Street is the historic Lutheran Parish Hall, and in the courtyard the former Pastor’s residence.
Walking up Queen Cross Street to Company Street takes you to Apothecary Hall on the left corner. Opened in 1828 by Danish pharmacist Peder Eggers Bentzon, the town’s first pharmacy remained here until 1970.
Nearby on Company Street is the Old Market , laid out in the original town plan from 1735 and still being used. The well dates from 1863. On this square you will also find the downtown Post Office.
Established in 1952, Christiansted National Historic Site was the first unit of the National Park System in the US Virgin Islands. The park’s historic buidings and grounds commemorate the Danish heritage (1733-1917) of the town of Christiansted, St. Croix, which was named in honor of the reigning King of Denmark and Norway, Christian VI. In the 1700s, Christiansted was part of a mercantile system that linked Europe,West Africa, and the Caribbean in the infamous “Triangular Trade.” Christiansted was the first town in the Lesser Antilles to be built on the grid system and to have a building code. Its distinctive colonial architecture reflects the town’s status as capital of the Danish West Indies (1755-1871); the great wealth generated by the export of cane sugar, molasses, and rum; and the influence of government building inspectors.

Your tour of Frederiksted begins at Fort Frederik by the cruise ship pier and waterfront park. Construction on the Fort began in 1752 and was completed in 1760. Featuring a museum with several permanent exhibits, and an art gallery, it is open Monday – Friday, 8:30 am to 4 pm. Admission $5., children under 12 free.
A public beach with showers and bathrooms is next to Fort Frederik.
Governor General Peter von Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the enslaved population in the Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848, from adjacent Buddhoe Park named for the renowned slave rebellion leader, a bust of whom is displayed there.
The Oscar E. Henry Customs House was built in the 1800s. The Freedom Fountain , facing the pier, was installed for the Emancipation’s 150th Anniversary Celebration.
After severe damage during a labor insurrection in 1878, parts of the town were rebuilt in Victorian style. Victoria House , on Strand Street, preserves the Frederiksted architecture of that time.
The Visitor’s Bureau is located upstairs on Strand Street above the Frederiksted Mall and next door to the historic light blue building housing the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts Free admission to exhibits and gift shop.
Frederiksted is home to several historic churches, including St. Paul’s Episcopal Church , Holy Tr inity Lutheran Church , Friedensberg Moravian Church , and St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church .
The handsomely restored Arthur Abel Complex , formerly The Danish School (1799), is now the office of the Lieutenant Governor in Frederiksted at Hospital and Market Street. At Strand and Queen Cross Streets is the Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library , built in 1803. Just behind it lies the Dorsch Theater , an open-air stage and event site. The Market Place , is still in use today, as it was in 1751 at the founding of Frederiksted.
WEST END ATTRACTIONS
Tour an early Danish homestead, the Lawaetz Family Museum at Estate Little La Grange on Mahogany Road. Plantation ruins offer visitors a tranquil backdrop for peace and contemplation at the Mt. Washington Labyrinth , 2 miles north of Frederiksted. Open every day, year-round. The entrance gate is to the left when you reach the property and parking lot. The Whim Museum , on Centerline Road, is the site of a former sugar cane plantation and temporarily closed. St. George Village Botanical Garden also on Centerline, showcases on 16 acres of ruins of a former sugar plantation 1500 native & exotic species. Award-winning Ridge2Reef Farm , on Creque Dam Road, is a USDA Certified Organic Farm with produce, tours, and workshops. The Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge is .5 mile beyond the west end of the Melvin H. Evans highway. See St. Croix Map, Pg 54 for location.
HOLIDAYS AND HORTICULTURE - A GREAT MIX

he great joy of celebrating the holiday season in the tropics is the balmy climate offered to us at this time of the year. But it is also a treat to switch from the gray scenery of many leafless trees, and most flowering plants hibernating till spring. Need I mention not having to shovel snow? A few residents may miss the change of seasons, but most of us welcome our so-called winters. In fact, the only snow you can find on the island is a lovely seasonal “Snow on the Mountain” shrub that showers the landscape with an abundance of lovely white blossoms.
In many parts of the U.S. and elsewhere in the world, especially in its country of origin, Mexico, one plant signifies Christmas--the Poinsettia, displaying its scarlet splendor in public and private locations. Its unusual name stems from a U.S. diplomat to Mexico Joel Roberts Poinsett who in 1828 sent samples of this beautiful plant back to his home town Greenville, South Carolina and to Philadelphia’s Botanical Garden who named the plant for him.

In the Great Hall, an array of decorated Christmas trees are auctioned to support the Garden, and in another section, we find a jolly Santa Claus sitting in his sleigh ready to greet the many youngsters who love this magical element of Christmas.
But that is just the beginning. The Gentlemen of Jones have already treated us to colorful street lights in Christiansted. Add to that the colorful splendor of the Tree Lighting in Limpricht Park sponsored by the Crucian Cultural Group who also offer a Lantern Parade into town.
The ”eternal summer” that we enjoy is incorrectly named, as each plant species has its active and dormant periods and, while it never gets cold here, the scenery changes according to which plants are in bloom or bearing fruit, alleviating the possible monotony.
We are so fortunate to have a site where you can indulge your appreciation of tropical nature. St. George Village Botanical Garden, founded in 1962, was once.an Amerindian village linked to the sea by a stream that the inhabitants could travel in their canoes. Later, the site became a sugar cane plantation, and many structures remain from that time, making this unique among botanical gardens.
It’s open every day, except Christmas, from 9 am to 3 pm, offering a reasonable admission charge, guided tours, or a self-guided tour with a map. You can easily spend two or three hours exploring the-15-acre grounds that include thousands of tropical plants like palms and cacti, an orchid sanctuary, a rainforest, a museum of the long history of the site, a nursery, a medical herb garden, a herbarium of dried plants, a library of plant literature, a Great Hall for accommodating events, plus offices and a kitchen, and of course a well-stocked gift shop The non-profit organization is supported by donations and grants and has received numerous awards

A spectacular annual Lighted Boat Parade in Christiansted harbor is a treat for the eyes and brings several thousand cheering viewers to town.
The calendar is brimming with fun activities throughout the island, and many attract crowds. Everybody takes off from work to partake. In another horticulture-sponsored activity, the Farmers in Action’s Coconut Festival at Estate Bethlehem also features vendors of coconut crafts, drinks, and an art show.
But the big celebration belongs to the Crucian Christmas Festival that stretches into January and is centered in Frederiksted where a village and amusement park attracts crowds. Contests for Festival Queen and Princess, Calypso contests, and a Food Fair are among the many attractions leading up to the climax of The Three Kings Day Parades along King Street. Hundreds of dancers in spectacular costumes gyrate to the music and youth steel bands ably perform a varied repertoire. At any local parade, favorites are the Moko Jumbie stilt dancers, local idols. After the parades, fireworks bring the holiday festivities to an end.
But in between, you don’t want to miss a lively event involving a contest with free samplings of a favorite Holiday beverage known as Coquito: Cruzan Rum blended with condensed milk and coconut cream. Pick a winner before having tried all! Treat yourself to La Reine Chicken Shack’s great food right there.

DECEMBER
Several planets are now visible in the evening sky. High in the west just after sunset, the very bright Venus will be the first starlike object to appear. As it gets darker Jupiter will be found high in the eastern sky. Jupiter is at Opposition on December 7th, which means it is directly opposite the Sun as seen from Earth. As such, Jupiter rises in the east when the Sun sets in the West and sets in the West when the Sun is rising in the East. Jupiter is seen against the background of stars of the constellation of Taurus, the Bull. Nearby Jupiter is the bright red star Aldebaran, the red right eye of the bull. Looking back at Venus and then slightly higher in the sky is Saturn. Fainter than Venus and Jupiter but still a bright starlike object. Around 8:00 p.m. Mars will rise in the East. Wait a few hours to see the red planet.
December 13th to 14th is the maximum of the Geminids Meteor Shower. This meteor shower can produce up to 120 meteors, or shooting stars, per hour at its peak. Light from the almost Full Moon will overpower all but the brightest meteors this year. The best time to look is between midnight and dawn.
The December solstice takes place on the 21st. The Sun will be as far south in the sky as it gets. This marks the beginning of winter in the Northern Hemisphere and the beginning of summer in the Southern Hemisphere.
Every year at this time people ask astronomers if they know what was the star of stars, the star which led the Wise Men to Bethlehem at the time of the birth of Jesus? Long ago people thought of everything that they saw in the night sky as a "star". Thus, the planets, the "fixed" stars, meteors, comets, etc. all were "stars". So, what might have been "The Star"? Meteors or shooting stars happen so quickly that if you see one, by the time
you tell your friends to look, the flash will be gone. Certainly, a meteor did not send the Wise Men to Bethlehem. Comets were well known but were considered omens of bad tidings and thus a comet would not send the Wise Men in search of a great king. The fixed stars do not change from year to year, so they would not account for the search. For time to time a star may "explode" as a nova or supernova, and for a short time may even become visible in the daytime. But our records show no "guest star" at the time of Christ's birth.
The Wise Men followed the motions of the planets as these "wandering stars" moved against the background of fixed stars, for they believed that the motions of these wandering stars could foretell the future. With their knowledge of the motions of the heavens they could calculate that Jupiter and Saturn would pass each other three times and then be joined by Mars. But, what of Herod and his advisors, why did they not see this "star"? Most of the event would not be visible because it would happen during the day. But the Wise Men knew that it was happening. They knew that this event would take place in Pisces, the Fish, a star group which for them was symbolic of the Hebrews. Thus, some great event would take place in the land of the Hebrews and the Wise Men were off on their search. Was this meeting of the planets really "The Star"? Astronomers do not know; the final decision is yours.

On January 4th, the Earth will be the closest to the Sun for the entire year. The Sun will be only 91,405,993 miles away (147,103,686 km).
On January 10th Venus is at its Greatest Eastern Elongation. This means that Venus will be the highest it gets in the western sky and easily found after sunset. Venus is the third brightest natural object in the sky, after the Sun and the Moon. Saturn is seen nearby. Both are seen against the background of stars of Aquarius, a man pouring water from a jar. Aquarius has no bright stars and the stars form a shape that looks nothing like a man! Jupiter is a bright yellow-whitish starlike object almost overhead.
On January 16th Mars is at Opposition, opposite the Sun as seen from the Earth. Mars will be at its closest approach to Earth for the year and will be fully illuminated by the Sun and thus it will be brighter than any other time of the year. Mars will rise in the East as the Sun sets in the West and will be visible all night long. Mars is seen just below the bright star Pollux the head of one of the Gemini Twins. His twin brother is Castor, and the bright star Castor is found just north of Pollux.
If you draw a line from Venus to Jupiter and on to Mars, you will be marking the zodiac. The zodiac is a band of constellations which encircles the sky and it is to the zodiac that we must look to find the planets. Starting at Venus and moving East the constellations of the zodiac are: Aquarius, that man pouring water from a jar; Pisces, two fish with their tails tied together by string, formed by no bright stars; Aries, the Ram, a small constellation with no bright stars; Taurus, the Bull where you can easily spot Jupiter and Aldebaran; Gemini with Mars, Castor and Pollux. The night of January 3rd to 4th is the maximum of the Quadrantids Meteor Shower which can produce up to 40 meteors per hour at its peak. Look from a dark location between midnight and dawn.
