St. Croix, the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, sits to the south of our small island chain and is renowned for its pastoral landscapes, Danish architecture and historical landmarks. With its offshore wrecks and unbelievably beautiful underwater reefs, St. Croix is also a popular destination for diving enthusiasts. Be sure to visit the historic towns of Frederiksted and Christiansted and indulge in St. Croix’s renowned art and delicious culinary scenes. St. John is one of the smaller U.S. Virgin Islands and conservation center of the territory. It is best known for its pristine beaches and the attractions within the Virgin Islands National Park, which occupies more than half the island. The lands in the Virgin Islands National Park shelter migrant birds and the mangroves support corals and anemones. As with all the Virgin islands, you will find that St. John provides a rich mix of our culture and history. St. Thomas is our business and shopping center and the seat of government. Charlotte Amalie is the capital town of the U.S. Virgin Islands and is one of the busiest ports of call for cruise ships in the Caribbean. St. Thomas is among the most popular destinations in the Caribbean for sailing and yachting enthusiasts. Water Island is the smallest of the U.S. Virgin Islands and rests just off the coast of St. Thomas. It is mostly residential but offers fun attractions like Honeymoon Beach and quaint accommodations. The island can be reached by ferry from the Crown Bay Marina or by other vessels. As the Lieutenant Governor and Governor, both Treganza Roach and I wish you a warm, fun-filled stay and please accept our invitation to return often to our paradise.

2019 THE CARIBBEAN WRITER, VOLUME 32 “Rough Tides, Tough Times: Reflections and Transitions”
Derek Walcott
Sir Wilson Harris
Sir Vidiadhar Surajprasad Naipaul
Hot off the press, The Caribbean Writer, Volume 32 boasts insightful and exciting poetry, short-stories, personal essays, interviews and book reviews by established as well as emerging writers from the Caribbean and its diaspora; an annual refereed literary journal published by the University of the Virgin Islands each year. “The Caribbean Writer is a gem of the University that has garnered the support of each President since its existence, and I am honored to follow in that grand tradition,” said UVI President David Hall. “That support has been consistent because of the obvious and inherent worth and value of this publication, and its centrality to the mission of the University of the Virgin Islands.” Interim Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Kimarie Engerman, had high praises for Volume 32, stating that she is “proud of The Caribbean Writer which continues to provide a forum for a wealth of varied literary expressions in a high quality publication that is now known, read, and respected around the globe.” Volume 32 is, once again, edited by Alscess Lewis Brown, an award-winning author of young adult books and a member of the University’s adjunct faculty since 1990, teaching courses in literature, writing and the humanities. “Again, I am delighted to have the distinct privilege and honor of editing this prestigious literary journal. We are now the oldest continuously published journal in the Caribbean region. The Caribbean Writer - the living testimony of Caribbean people – is showing signs that we cannot escape the changes taking place globally and environmentally for we have literally weathered some of the toughest storms in the region and, since our inception in 1987, have never missed a publication year, ” Brown said. “Volume 32 is an imaginative and expressive review of the power, prescience and resilience of the Caribbean experience.” The editor went on to note that, as the journal went to press in 2018, the Caribbean region and, by extension, the world, was “once again pressed by the passing of giant scholars, thinkers, writers—literati of the stature that the Caribbean will not soon w w w.stcroix thisweek.com
forget. Last year (2017) in March, we lost an esteemed member of our editorial advisory board, Nobel Laureate Derek Walcott. This year in March (2018), Wilson Harris, regarded as one of the most influential writers over the last fifty years, departed this literary thoroughfare. His unconventional mystical style explored deeply the psychological journeys of his characters – and ours, the best example being lodged in his seminal novel Palace of the Peacock (1960). Paget Henry, Caribbean scholar and Brown University Chair, a personal friend of Harris, celebrates his work in this volume. Then, in August (2018), Nobel Laureate Sir Vidiadhar Surajprasad Naipaul, informally known as V.S. Naipaul, who published thirty books, both of fiction and nonfiction over some fifty years, slipped into the annals of history and, as he long envied, into Death’s release, having done his work, finished [his writing], and gone away (V.S. Naipaul, Between Father and Son: Family Letters, Charlie Rose, 01/25/2000, https://charlierose. com/ videos/26083). H. Adlai Murdoch, Tuft University professor of Francophone Studies and Director of Africana Studies, writes in this volume an insightful overview on Sir V.S. Naipaul. A number of emerging Virgin Islands authors are featured in this edition, including Semaj Johnson, Elaine Jacobs, Daisy Holder Lafond, Patricia Nelthrop-Fagan, and Clement White. We also recognize the winners of the 2018 literary prizes. Brenda Flanagan, a Trinidadian author won The Canute A. Brodhurst Prize for her short fiction “To Dance With My Brother”; Shani Isaac, a St. Croix resident and university student won The Daily News Prize for her story entitled, “Homecoming”; Mezan Ayoka of Jamaica won The David Hough Literary Prize for her poem entitled “Under the House”; Mary Duggan, a St. Croix resident won The Marvin E. Williams Literary Prize for her poem “Honey Bee”; and Kacy West, a Jamaican poet won The Cecile de Jongh Literary Prize for her work entitled “The Colour of Politics.” To maintain its high standard, Brown explains that “the local editorial board is comprised of Dr. Lomarsh Roopnarine, a professor at the Jackson State University, and professors from both UVI campuses, Dr. Vincent O. Cooper, Dr. Patricia Harkins-Pierre and Dr. Vanda Espinosa. The important work Administrative Specialist Charlene Spencer strengthens the work of The Caribbean Writer team.” The cover design features art work by the versatile and skillful Trinidadian artist Daniele Boodoo-Fortune, a longtime supporter of TCW. Josephine’s Dessert & Wine – 340-473-6570 No sweet tooth required at Josephine’s, downtown Christiansted’s chilled-out destination for crushable treats of the sugar-dusted, caramel-slathered, and fruity-with-a-crisp-dry-finish kind. The house-made desserts reign supreme, but you can grab a chair, sip a glass of cellar-temp vino, and let the vintage soundtrack (and cranked A/C) wash over you while the sugar addicts in your crew do their thing. Namely: velvety cheesecake with prosecco-softened strawberries. Death-by-chocolatestyle pot de crème. Silky banana-chocolate panna cotta topped with ripe local fruit, then hit with the business end of a blowtorch. On the off-chance you get tempted, turns out smoky añejo tequila pairs magically with any chocolate-leaning dessert ($9 each; three for $21) getting spin-doctored around and around your table’s Lazy Susan. Just saying. Tuesday – Saturday, 5 pm – 11 pm.

LOCAL ART SAYS, “TAKE ME HOME!”
Meet Cover Artist Toni Lance
bird illustration away for a while. For the first 20 years that I lived on St. Croix, I painted local scenes — fishing boats, open markets, palm trees, banana plants, the old Danish architecture and colorful parades. My painting medium of choice has always been watercolor. I like that it is quick to work with and leans more toward my illustration background. Using photographs that I have taken, I am well known as a realistic painter. A few months after I came to St. Croix, I was at a beach where a boy had found an injured Redtailed Hawk. I convinced him to give the bird to me. With help building a large flight cage, I then cared for the bird and released it. And so began my bird rehab on St. Croix. Licensed by the Department of Natural Resources, I started a nonprofit, The St. Croix Avian Sanctuary, Inc. So, you can imagine, with the dream of pho-
“When I was 25 years old, I came to St Croix to visit my sister, who had, two years before, moved here. I loved it immediately and it has been my home for the past 39 years. My name is Toni Lance and I grew up in Southern California. I am the youngest of four girls. My parents and my older sisters all had an interest in art and nature. My father collected decoy ducks and was an avid bird watcher. I was hooked, spending my weekends riding my bike to wetlands to study and watch birds. My mother was into photography and that became my passion in high school. My older sisters were all very creative and I just followed what they were doing. In college, I studied photography, wildlife management and biomedical illustration. My dream was to be another John James Audubon or photograph birds for National Geographic. I

would check out bird study skins from the Los Angeles Natural History Museum and paint them. I loved the colorful paintings of Gauguin and hoped that one day I might live on a tropical island. So here I was, in 1980, on a two week visit to St. Croix. I not only fell in love with the island, but also a man. I packed up my life in California and moved here. Life in the Caribbean was so different from California and it was just what I had dreamed of as an artist and photographer. It was and continues to be a visual paradise for an artist where everything is so bright with deep greens, purple bougainvillea, cerulean water, and orange sunsets. The light is amazing in the early morning and late afternoons, where fabulous shadows cast on the charming West Indian buildings. It was all so inviting as a painter, that I put the

tographing and painting birds, working with them up close has been amazing. With such close contact, I have been able to appreciate their every detail — how their feathers lay, how their skin folds under their beak, how their intense eyes close, and how their feet still look like dinosaurs. Of course, it has been a thrill to photograph and paint these birds, but most of all to release them back to the wild. For the past 39 years, I have had a number of art and photography exhibits on St Croix, many at the Walsh Metal Works Gallery. This year, from February 8 through April 13, I am honored to be showing at The Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts in Frederiksted. The show is called “It’s a Matter of Birds” and will be watercolors and photography. St. Croix has been a dream come true for me and a magical place to live. My early hope of working with birds, both photographing and painting them, has been completely fulfilled living on this unique and treasured island.” www.tonilance.com lance.antonia@gmail.com

Our Danish Connection VELKOMMEN!
A Special Group of Danish Friends Descends on St. Croix
Members of the Danish West Indian Society on tour with Nina York in Christiansted. Susan Wall
(340) 776-0656. Page 38 • Februar y / March 2019
by Nina York Every four years since 1967, the Virgin Islands receives a contingent of Danish members of an organization founded in 1917 known as the Danish West Indian Society for week-long visits to both St. Croix and St. Thomas, staying in private homes. The original members had been stationed here before Denmark sold their island possessions to the United States and celebrated their sentimental attachment to their time here with others having shared those experiences. In later years, the membership has grown to include many other individuals with an interest in island history and ancestral connections. At this end, its sister societies in St. Croix and St. Thomas originated considerably later, but a signature event for St. Croix and St. Thomas Friends of Denmark, as they are called, is the Festival, alternating every two years between Denmark and the Virgin Islands. St. Croix receives the group of 30+ visitors on March 25, but preparations started several months ago. Finding persons among members willing to house and feed in some cases total strangers is not easy, but the majority knows it is a requirement to reciprocate when you have enjoyed hospitality in Denmark at a previous Festival. What differentiates a Festival visit from the average tourist visit? Not just the savings on the usual hotel and meal expenses – all covered by Friends of Denmark and each of the hosts, but also tour access to special sites not open to the general public as well as parties in local residences of Friends of Denmark members. No wonder there is an interest in joining this organization! The impressive welcome given to the Virgin Islanders in 2017 for the double centennial of the Transfer of the Danish West Indies (as our islands were called) and that of the Danish West Indian Society, illustrated the warm relations between the Danes and Virgin Islanders, a unique phenomenon between a foreign colonial power and its former possession. After a week of educational and entertaining tours, beach picnics, parties, and renewing friendships, the early evening before the group’s departure for St. Thomas, a farewell dinner is held at St. George Botanical Garden on March 31, which normally in the recent past was celebrated as Transfer Day. After over 100 years since being a Danish possession, it seems appropriate for us to cherish our Danish heritage but also feel pride in being part of the United States of America that has come to our aid in so many ways after the serious storms that hit us in the fall of 2017. It bears mention that considerable support came from Denmark as well. We hope our Danish friends will receive a hearty island welcome wherever they go while in our islands. Velkommen! Nina York, born in Denmark but a St. Croix resident since 1976, has been a contributor for this publication since 2009 and was its Managing Editor from 1990 – 2003. She now offers tours for visitors from Denmark and the mainland, does translations, and volunteers for Rotary and the Friends of Denmark Society.

Island Weddings MARRY ME ON ST. CROIX!
Bridal Psychosis?!
While scrolling through one of my social media feeds, I came across an interesting wedding related video from BuzzFeed. The video begins with the contributor (Sarah) laying across her bed, in her wedding dress, distraught because she purchased the dress in the wrong size and was now unable to zip up her wedding gown. Determined to fit into her dress, she began to explore various options to try to fit into her dress before the big day. After attempting crash diets and intense exercise regimens without success, her desire to fit into her gown became an obsession. At the height of her frustration, Sarah decided to visit a psycho therapist to see if there was an actual diagnosis for the obsessive/manic behavior she was demonstrating. It turns out, there is! It is called Bridal Psychosis. In a nutshell, Bridal or Wedding Psychosis can be defined as, feeling a loss of control due to an overwhelming need for perfection. This need results in emotional breakdowns and the subjection of oneself or others to obsessive, manic behaviors, as a means to control situations in an attempt to achieve said perfection and/or desired wedding outcomes. When your happiness is based on an external outcome, this, unfortunately, is not how sustainable happiness works. Happiness comes from within and it begins with gratitude for all things. The wedding is only one day. Yes, for many it may be the biggest and most expensive party you have ever planned. However, if you get so lost in the planning that you literally lose your mind, you have missed the point. In addition to looking your best and creating a memorable day, remember your ‘why.’ For most brides, myself included, your wedding day is a blur. The jitters and excitement you feel should be your main focus, not a mundane wedding detail that won’t matter in 24 hours. As long as you are married and happy about that fact, when all is said and done, consider the day a success. For more info, planning tips, and resources visit www.vibridalguide.com Quiana L. St. Croix has so much to offer when you are looking in the right place.” Buck Island Reef National Monument is ranked one of the top 10 places to snorkel in the world by Travel & Leisure Magazine. “Ever since the park expanded the no take boundaries to the surrounding 19,000 acres, we have seen a resurgence in marine life. There is a very special feeling you get when you dive down into a school of fish so thick you can’t see your snorkel buddy on the other side. We are very lucky to be out here every day and we take great pride in protecting the reef.” We offer public and private charters, sunset sails, snorkeling, scuba diving, and wedding ceremonies at beautiful Buck Island Reef National Monument, one of St. Croix’s three National Parks. DIVE EXPERIENCE — Diving St. Croix for 35 years Michelle Pugh, a 39-year resident of St Croix, learned to dive in Los Angeles while high school and hasn’t stopped since! In 1992, along with Jacques Cousteau, she was inducted into the platinum Pro 5000 through SSI. In 2004, she was inducted into the Women Divers Hall of Frame for being the first woman to dive with killer whales in the wilds of Canada, the first American woman to teach diving in Moscow, Russia and for establishing the mooring system on St Croix to protect the coral reefs. Michelle was also given the SBDC and Congressional Award for Entrepreneurial Success for Dive Experience. Sam Halvorson, Captain, Instructor, Dive Master, and Videographer, has been on board for 29 years. He knows the reefs like the back of his hand. His videos are a favorite souvenir! Skeeter, the dog, loves the dive boat and swimming with the divers. Michelle, who’s made over 10,000 dives on St. Croix, is the only dive center owner that actually dives most everyday—guiding lots of customers by request. While developing the dive mooring
sites, she has explored most St Croix reefs and walls. Michelle has also traveled the world just to dive—like the East coast of the US from Florida to Rhode Island, the West coast from Canada to Mexico, The Red Sea, Australia, Solomon Islands, Borneo, Philippines, the Antarctic, and most of Susan Wall the Caribbean Islands. And, I recently returned from the Galapagos Islands! Dive Experience is St Croix’s first dive operator and the first PADI 5-star IDC center. They teach diving from novice to professional instructors. Roseway—Get On Board!
Roseway.
Ted Davis
Built in 1925 in Massachusetts, Roseway has led a long and distinguished career, serving as a racing yacht, fishing vessel, and a pilot boat guiding Allied vessels through minefields and antisubmarine nets during World War II. When she was retired in 1972, Roseway was the last sailing pilot boat in the United States. She then began serving passengers as a charter vessel off the Main coast. In 1977, Roseway and her sister ship Adventure, starred in the television remake of Rudyard Kipling’s Captions Courageous, filmed in Camden, Maine. After falling into disrepair and eventually being condemned for service by the US Coast Guard, she was repossessed by the Bank that owned her. In 2002, the First National Bank of Damariscotta donated the ship to the World Ocean School where she underwent an 18-month restoration. Today, after more than 90 years of service, Roseway is again proudly sailing the Atlantic, one of only three still working Grand Banks schooners and a registered US National Historic Landmark. And don’t we feel proud and lucky, here on St. Croix, that she chose this island to spend her winters, not only educating and empowering our students to reach their potential as responsible, productive, and engaged community members, but offering locals and visitors the amazing experience of going aboard on sunset charters during the months of December – March. Viewing St. Croix from offshore is special enough, but aboard Roseway, there’s an extra thrill in feeling her weight and thrust through the water as the winds fills her sails! Its particularly fun to share the experience with others, enjoying life on board this legendary schooner, even for just two hours. You have two months—February and March—to catch a sunset sail on Roseway before she sails back to Glouster, MA. Get tickets for a magical and exciting Valentine’s Day sail, February 14, and a St. Croix Chamber of Commerce sunset sail on February 21! LOCATION. St. Croix lies 18 north latitude and 65 west longitude, about 700 miles from the equator. The Virgin Islands are part of the Antilles chain from the Bahamas down to Trinidad. St. Croix is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea.
COMMUNICATIONS. St. Croix has several radio stations and three television stations; Cable TV carries the national news stations. Two newspapers are published daily; also an online daily. New York and Miami papers arrive each morning.
VIRGIN ISLANDERS. Virgin Islanders are a reserved but friendly people. “Good Morning,” “Good Afternoon,” and “Good Night” are welcome Crucian greetings. Everyone speaks English or a lilting version of it.
TELEPHONE SERVICE. The local area code is 340 but you need not dial it for local numbers. Phone cards are sold at many shops throughout the island. We have local Sprint and ATT stores for any forgotten cell phone accessories.
CLIMATE. Year-round temperatures range in the 80s during the day, 70s most nights, with summer somewhat warmer. Easterly trade winds keep the humidity down. Most island showers are over in minutes. Residents collect rainwater from rooftops into household cisterns. Saltwater distillation plants help the supply. With water scarce, it is used sparingly.
POSTAL RATES. As part of the US postal system, 1st class mail is .50 cents for the first ounce, postcards are .35 cents, international rates are $1.20 for cards and letters. See maps for post office locations.
TIME. We are on Atlantic Standard in the winter, one hour ahead of Eastern Standard. During the summer, we are the same time as Eastern Daylight Savings. WHAT TO WEAR. Island dress is casual but bathing suits and men without shirts in town or grocery stores is frowned upon. Men don’t need ties or jackets; hats are great sun protectors for everyone. No adaptors needed for personal plug-ins. WE ARE HERE TO HELP YOU. The Visitors’ Bureau is located upstairs in the Frederiksted Mall and next to the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts on Strand Street; open weekdays and cruise ship days. The seasoned traveler doesn’t Page 48 • Februar y / March 2019

DRIVE SAFE— STAY LEFT Whether renting a car or crossing the street, it is vital to remember that traffic in the USVI flows from the left side of the road. St. Croix is 28 miles in length and 7 miles at the widest point with two major towns— Christiansted at the center on the north shore and Frederiksted at the west end. The Caribbean Sea which surrounds the island is always there to guide you along the roads that wind around the coast. Car rental agencies have a variety of vehicles available from sporty jeeps to roomy air-conditioned sedans, vans, and SUVs. The average price usually includes unlimited mileage but you fill the tank upon return! Both US and other driver’s licenses are recognized. The driver and front seat passenger are required by law to use seat belts and cell phone talking or texting is not allowed. Parking in Christiansted is limited and 2-hour parking on parts of Company and Queen Cross Streets is enforced. Look for the signs. There is daytime parking in the National Park Service lot near Ft. Christiansvaern, until 4:30 pm, and a public lot with fees on Strand and King Cross Street. Major roads are asphalt and usually well maintained. The Melvin H. Evans Highway is the only 4-lane, divided highway running from mid-island west to within 1 mile of Frederiksted. The speed limit is 55. In other areas, the 35 mph limit applies; in town, 20 mph unless otherwise posted. Let our Attractions & Tours pages (7-9) and our St. Croix Road Map (54 & 55) and town maps (56-58) help you plan your island tour!

Island Worship The history of our island is mirrored in its old church structures, many of which have recently been restored. The Moravian brethren, arriving here in the 1730s from Saxony in today’s Germany, founded their mission to bring Christianity to the enslaved part of the population. The historic Anglican (Episcopalian) churches built in Gothic style include St. John’s in Christiansted and, in Frederiksted, the beautifully restored St. Paul’s church. The large number of Irish settlers, along with Englishmen and Hispanics, have contributed to the presence of the Catholic church; Holy Cross in Christiansted is the oldest in the Virgin Islands. The Danish rule of the island from 1733 to 1917 brought the Lutheran church, which still plays a large role here. Lord God of Sabaoth in Christiansted occupies the former Dutch Reformed Church; Holy Trinity in Frederiksted was built shortly after the town was founded. The Dutch Reformed church (Presbyterian) now has a new mid-island home. These are just a few of the many (over 150) churches on St. Croix, from Seventh-Day Adventist to Methodist, Baptist, Church of God, and many more. Church attendance and activities are important to a large part of our population; visitors are always welcome at services, often a high point in their island experience. Many other faiths offer places of worship—a Jewish synagogue, a Hindu temple, and a Moslem mosque, to name a few. An easy-tofollow guide is actually the yellow pages of our local phone book beginning on Page 54.

Befolkningen. Virgin Islands befolkning er venlig men tilbageholdende. Man hilser gerne med “Good morning”, “Good Afternoon” og “Good Night.” Tider. Her som alle vegne, vær forsigtig. Lås bilen, gå ikke med værdifulde smykker i byen, og hold dig til de befolkede områder.

THIS NATIONAL PARK COMMEMORATES OUR DANISH HERITAGE (1733-1917).
CHRISTIANSTED WALKING TOUR Let’s start a leisurely walking tour of CHRISTIANSTED at the site of the Old Scale House 1 on the harborfront, known as the Wharf. One section of the 1856 structure displays the scale used in former days to weigh barrels of rum and sugar. The other section holds a bookstore and gift shop as well as an information center about all things St. Croix. This is one of a complex of five buildings comprising the Christiansted National Historic Site, established in 1952, administered by the National Park Service.

Fort Christiansvaern 3 was the first public building to be started by the Danes after the island was purchased from France in 1733. It is built of Danish yellow brick and was completed in 1749 and later expanded. Its present appearance reflects the 1830’s period.

Originally, Government House 6 on King Street, was built as a home for a Danish merchant. That section dates from 1749; another section, the previous town house of a wealthy Danish plantation owner, was joined to it in 1826, together becoming the seat of the Danish West Indies government. The grand staircase and portico were added in 1830, as was the impressive ballroom/reception hall on the second floor by Governor General Peter von Scholten, who had his office and official residence here. The former are open to the public (entrance at mid-building on King Street). The Lutheran Church 7 across Queen Cross Street on King Street, was originally the Dutch Reformed Church, built in the 1740’s and transferred to the Lutherans in 1831, who brought the furnishings here from the Steeple Building. Later, the steeple was added. Walking up Queen Cross Street to Company Street takes you to Apothecary Hall 8 on the left corner, which holds both the tiny Apothecary Museum on Queen Cross Street, open anytime, and in the courtyard the Archaeological Museum, open only Saturdays 10 am-2 pm. Nearby on Company Street is the Old Market 9 , laid out in the original town plan from 1735, and still being used. The well dates from 1863. On this square you will also find the downtown Post Office.
Christiansted National Historic Site Established in 1952, Christiansted National Historic Site was the first unit of the National Park Saystem in the US Virgin Islands. The park’s historic buidings and grounds commemorate the Danish heritage (1733-1917) of the town of Christiansted, St. Croix, which was named in honor of the reigning King of Denmark and Norway, Christian VI. In the 1700s, Christiansted was part of a mercantile system that linked Europe,West Africa, and the Caribbean in the infamous “Triangular Trade.” Christiansted was the first town in the Lesser Antilles to be built on the grid system and to have a building code. Its distinctive colonial architecture reflects the town’s status as capital of the Danish West Indies (1755-1871); the great wealth generated by the export of cane sugar, molasses, and rum; and the influence of government building inspectors. Governor General Peter von Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the enslaved population in the Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848, from adjacent Buddhoe Park 2. The park contains a bronze bust of the renowned slave rebellion leader. The Oscar E. Henry Customs House 3 was built in the 1800s. The Freedom Fountain 4, facing the pier, was installed for the Emancipation 150th Anniversary Celebration. After severe damage during a labor insurrection in 1878, the town was rebuilt in Victorian style. Victoria House 5, on Strand Street, and Apothecary Hall 6, 63 on King Cross Street between King and Queen Streets, preserve the Frederksted architecture of that time. Both received storm damage in September. The Visitor’s Bureau 7, is located upstairs on Strand Street above the Frederiksted Mall and next door to the historic light blue building housing the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts 8. Frederiksted is home to a number of historic churches, including St. Paul’s Episcopal Church 9, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church 10, Friedensberg Moravian Church 11, and St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church 12. The newly restored Old Danish School 13, on Hospital Street and Market Street, is a handsome building. The Discovery and Resurrection of a Lost Plantation Tony and Nancy Ayer's Estate Mount Washington
by Nina York It is hard to believe that on this tiny island, 84 square miles in all, there are areas unexplored that can yield ruins of a former sugar plantation with its many structures. To be sure, when driving around St. Croix you spot many mementos of the past, the remnants of the numerous windmills that were prominently situated for optimum efficiency. But since sugar plantations covered 80% of the island around the early 1800’s, and over 150 of them were active as generators of huge profits, we realize that the tropical forest, known as “bush” has overtaken many other important plantation structures today. With all these parts, each plantation was a town unto itself, some with several hundred enslaved inhabitants. We actually know that there are named former plantations that are still hidden in the bush, presenting an interesting challenge to explorers. Such was the experience that ensued for Anthony (known as Tony) Ayer and his wife Nancy back in 1982. Tony’s mother and stepfather, along with his 2 brothers, had moved here in the 1940’s when Tony was eight. He grew up at Estate Northside north of Frederiksted in a historic residence, attending school stateside and later college at Cornell University. But the island and its history intrigued him and he returned after graduation. Meanwhile his stepfather and mother had
Greathouse Livingroom Parlor.
developed St. Croix’s Hotel Carlton and golf course in 1952; Tony and stepfather Dick Richards started Richards and Ayer Real Estate office, the first real estate office in Frederiksted in 1960. Over the years, a large tract of land that included Estate Mt. Washington had had many owners but it had not been more than marginally developed. A Danish immigrant Lauritz Tranberg, who married locally and had 7 children, decided to sell part of his holdings in that area, and this was bought by an investor group assembled by Tony to acquire not only Mt. Washington but two other estates totaling over 200 acres and an attractive beach. The lush rainforest growth in the area inw w w.stcroix thisweek.com

trigued Tony and his wife Nancy, and on a hike through the jungle they stumbled on impressive ruins they had never known about. It was the dawn of a dream to make the restoration of this great estate their life’s mission. Tony’s deep involvement with the St. Croix Landmarks Society prompted a lot of his commitment to historic restoration. This was the start of the restoration of Estate Mt. Washington, an incredible drama described in great detail in a new full-color book featuring a spectacular array of photographs. From the clearing of the site, including relocating a pig farm that occupied and did not enhance the property, to getting the drawings of the original structures from the archives in Denmark, hiring an architect, Tony’s nephew Peter Ayer, and hiring capable local crews for clearing and later reconstructing the vast complex, are all described in colorful detail. The many obstacles they were faced with did not deter them because their vision of the completion was so clear to both. But decisions had to be made how to create a home for the family with comforts of the present day without compromising the historic authenticity of the structures. The idea was not to recreate a sugar plantation or rum factory, since instead of cane fields the dense forest was still part of the property. But the ruins could be stabilized and help tell a story about their former function, and so it turned out. The former stables became a lovely antique shop run by Nancy, who furnished their home with exquisite taste, primarily with an important, notable collection of antique West Indian
mahogany furnishings. Much of the property became a citrus farm and in more recent years Nancy created a Labyrinth that is open at no cost to the public, as are the 18 century ruins. The residence itself remains private. The Ayers have offered the property for sale, furnished, and are confident that a new buyer will preserve its historic significance. This book is a love story detailing a long and challenging undertaking by two people of great vision and great generosity. We think it will find a place on many island coffee tables and on those of visitors enchanted by the history and beauty of St. Croix. Deep Tissue Massage Therapy is beneficial in releasing chronic muscle tension and reducing stress hormone levels and heart rate while boosting mood and relaxation and improving posture. This type of massage reaches the deepest layer of muscles and tendons, breaking down tense areas that may cause pain and inflammation, limiting motion of the muscles and joints. Aromatherapy uses natural oils extracted from flowers and plants to enhance psychological and physical well-being. Benefits include its ability to reduce anxiety, ease depression, boost energy levels, speed up the healing process, eliminate headaches, boost cognitive performance, induce sleep, strengthen the immune system, reduce pain, improve digestion and increase circulation. Reflexology uses pressure to the feet and hands with thumb, finger, and hand techniques and without the use of oil or lotion, to help organs and glands via the body’s energetic pathways. In use for thousands of years, benefits include stimulating nerve function, increasing energy, boosting circulation, inducing a deep relaxation, and eliminating toxins from the body. Body Wraps are a pampering experience to improve the texture and appearance of the skin by helping to rid the body of excess fluids and toxins. Benefits include detoxification, boosting of the lymphatic system and metabolism, body contouring, skin tightening and softening, and balance depending on the type of wrap chosen—aroma, seaweed, sea salt, and others. Facials are a skin care treatment for the face using steam, exfoliation, extraction, creams, lotions, facial masks, peels, and massage. They deeply cleanse and help fight certain skin problems, such as mild acne or dryness. Treatments leave faces glowing and are typically very relaxing, as they include a massage component. A sauna is a room designed as a place to experience dry or wet heat sessions andhas a strong impact on your health and wellbeing. The heat relieves stress, relaxes muscles, soothes aches and pains, cleanses the skin, induces a deeper sleep, improves cardiovascular performance, burns calories, and helps fight illness by boosting the immune system; emerge relaxed and revived! w w w.stcroix thisweek.com

by Amy Land-de-Wilde After helping thousands of people move to St. Croix in over more than 30 years, I’ve compiled a list of their favorite reasons to make the move and what keeps them on St. Croix.
1. Starting with the most obvious, St. Croix is so beautiful – the clear skies, the sparkling clear, blue waters, the near-constant cooling trade winds, the night sky filled with stars. 2. We are a food lover’s paradise. From the locavore movement to four-hour slow-down dinners on a farm in the rainforest. From Caribbean street vendors and food trucks to the popular St. Croix Food and Wine experience with visiting celebrity chefs. 3. The 45-minute commute with bumper-tobumper traffic that you may be used to, you won’t find here! The closest thing to a traffic jam may be waiting for a heard of goats to cross the road. Less commute means more time to do the things you love - time with family and friends, sports, exercise, reading. 4. A beautiful sandy beach is never far away. Choose one for a quiet morning walk or a colorful snorkel. You’ll never have to jostle for towel space!

We island women have ditched our pantyhose, makeup and blow dryers! Natural is the order of the day here. 7. Small Community, Big Love! We hear repeatedly about how inclusive, friendly, and loving our island community is. 8. Lifestyle! We live outdoors; we’re active and social. You can be as calm and quiet or as active as you desire! 9. And, last but not least… Our island real estate is a value proposition! FEBRUARY AND MARCH ARE STAR SHOWS. In February, the bright stars of Orion are almost overhead, Sirius is high in the southeast, Procyon is northeast of Sirius, high in the northeast are Castor and Pollux, Capella is high in the northern sky, and Canopus is low in the south. In March they have all moved toward the western part of the sky
H
igh in the sky are seven bright stars that form one of the best known constellations or star groups; Orion the Hunter. Two bright stars mark his shoulders, Betelgeuse and Bellatrix; two more bright stars his knees, Saiph and Rigel; and three mark his belt, Alnitak, Anilam and Mintala. To the south of Orion you will again come to the bright star Sirius, in Canis Major, the Great Hunting Dog. Canis Major is one of Orion’s two hunting dogs. North of Sirius and West of Orion is a bright star, of course fainter than Sirius, this is Procyon, marking Canis Minor, the Lesser Hunting Dog. To the north of Procyon are two bright stars of about the same brightness, Castor and Pollux. These stars mark the heads of twin brothers, the Gemini Twins. These two sons of Jupiter traveled with Jason and the Argonauts in the quest for the Golden Fleece. Pollux
Page 64 • Februar y / March 2019
was renowned for his accomplishments with arms and as a fighter. His brother Castor was famous for his mastery of horses. If it is clear and dark, look between the stars of Gemini and the stars of Orion and you will see a hazy band of whitish light arcing across the sky. This is the Milky Way our city of stars in the universe. The hazy band is caused by the combined light of millions of stars so far away that you cannot see them as individual points of light, but rather their light combines into this hazy band. East of the Gemini Twins and north of Orion is a bright red star, Aldebaran, the red right eye of Taurus, the Bull. Taurus may be one of the oldest constellations created by humans. Some four thousand years ago it marked the location of the Sun at the beginning of Spring and the Bull was known as the “Bull of light”. In Egypt, Assyria
and elsewhere people worshipped the Bull. February finds Mars high in the western sky after sunset, Jupiter high and Venus lower in the eastern sky before dawn. In the early evening in March, Mars is high in the western sky and is seen against the background of stars of Aries, the Ram. Jupiter rises in the southeast around 1:15 a.m. and is seen east of Antares, in Scorpius and Saturn rises around 3:00 a.m. in Sagittarius. If you are up early in the morning, before the Sun overpowers the night, the very, very Bright Venus will dominate the northeastern sky. On March 20th the Sun will shine directly over the equator and this will be the first day of Spring in the Northern Hemisphere and the first day of Autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. w w w.stcroix thisweek.com
