St. Croix, the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, sits to the south of our small island chain and is renowned for its pastoral landscapes, Danish architecture and historical landmarks. With its offshore wrecks and unbelievably beautiful underwater reefs, St. Croix is also a popular destination for diving enthusiasts. Be sure to visit the historic towns of Frederiksted and Christiansted and indulge in St. Croix’s renowned art and delicious culinary scenes. St. John is one of the smaller U.S. Virgin Islands and conservation center of the territory. It is best known for its pristine beaches and the attractions within the Virgin Islands National Park, which occupies more than half the island. The lands in the Virgin Islands National Park shelter migrant birds and the mangroves support corals and anemones. As with all the Virgin islands, you will find that St. John provides a rich mix of our culture and history. St. Thomas is our business and shopping center and the seat of government. Charlotte Amalie is the capital town of the U.S. Virgin Islands and is one of the busiest ports of call for cruise ships in the Caribbean. St. Thomas is among the most popular destinations in the Caribbean for sailing and yachting enthusiasts. Water Island is the smallest of the U.S. Virgin Islands and rests just off the coast of St. Thomas. It is mostly residential but offers fun attractions like Honeymoon Beach and quaint accommodations. The island can be reached by ferry from the Crown Bay Marina or by other vessels. As the Lieutenant Governor and Governor, both Treganza Roach and I wish you a warm, fun-filled stay and please accept our invitation to return often to our paradise.

April 4 – 7 The St. Croix Foundation for Community Development is gearing up to celebrate the people, the land, and the culture of St. Croix as never before with their 2019 Food & Wine Experience! With four events and an exclusive reception for partners, sponsors, and local and national media, the Food & Wine Experience is promoting the uniqueness of the ‘Big Island’ far beyond St. Croix’s shores while emphasizing the impact of holistic community development and the power of active philanthropy. Participants, as well as sponsors of this event, make investments that are measurable and enable the Foundation to dedicate its resources toward building resiliency after the 2017 hurricanes. Currently, the Foundation’s work is focused on building capacity around food security through supporting local farmers, creating community-based models of green energy and self-sufficiency, and working with over 100 local nonprofits through its grants, fiscal sponsorship, and Nonprofit Consortium—a strong civic sector that allows for strategic partnerships, greater efficiency, impact, and sustainability. The St. Croix Food & Wine Experience is all about food, fun, and philanthropy – and impact. After two category 5 hurricanes, this event is back with all your favorites!
On a small Greek island, Sophie dreams of a perfect wedding — one which includes her father giving her away. The problem? Sophie doesn’t know who he is! Her mother Donna, the former lead singer of the 1970’s pop group Donna and the Dynamos, refuses to talk about the past, so Sophie decides to take matters into her own hands. Sneaking a peek in her mother’s old diaries, she discovers three possible fathers: Sam, Bill, and Harry. She secretly invites all three to the wedding, convinced that she’ll know her father when she sees him. But when all three turn up, it may not be as clear as she thought! Told through the legendary music of ABBA, Mamma Mia! has become a worldwide sensation that has audiences everywhere dancing. – stageagent.com

The highly-anticipated production of Mamma Mia!, by the Performing Arts program at Good Hope Country Day School (GHCDS), has created a buzz since the school’s announcement of obtaining the rights. Their application was submitted within hours of the announcement of release and the school may have been the first or one of the first high schools in the country to get it. The cast and crew has over 30 students from grades 7-12 working and rehearsing for 8 weeks to bring you these 100% student-led-and-run performances! GHCDS production team consists of Michael Armendariz as Director, Kiomie Pedrini as Producer, and Joseph Barnwell, Technical Director, responsible for noteworthy set design and lighting. Donna and the Dynamos are being portrayed by Avery White, Mayah Russell and Carolyn Grimm. Sophie and Sky are portrayed by Jasmin Nieves and Angelo Capriola, and the three potential fathers are Ethan Stamper, David Conhoff, and Wylie Crowther. Our costume maidens, Cathy Mares, Mary Ann Mahoney, and Lea Wilson, have been busy researching, acquiring the right looks, and stitching some of the iconic style costumes associated with Mamma Mia. The Performing Arts program at GHCDS cultivates and develops students’ creativity, theatrical skills, self-expression and sense-of-self while helping them to have a rich understanding of other cultures, social issues, and themes and is committed to giving every student an opportunity to be involved in the creative process of performing in a safe, supportive, and dynamic environment. Thank you for supporting the arts at GHCDS, as every dollar raised covers the cost of this production!

Salt - Great Pond was founded by Chris and Kelly Booth. They met at Baltimore International College for Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management; Chris going for Culinary and Kelly going for Hospitality. They both wanted to own their own business but wanted to learn everything they could first. So, they kept going with their lives, school, and work. Then they moved to St. Croix and a few years later, married. They knew once it was their time to open their own business, they would know and here they stand... Freshness and creativity are their favorite ingredients. The menu is varied and the service is unmatched. Located on the South Shore, SALT - Great Pond is a perfect location to enjoy the beauty of St. Croix. Tucked inside the old, historic Petronella dairy farm on Route 62. Its cozy seating near the bar, open-air dining on the porch, a marvelous breeze, and breath-taking sea view, make the food that much better! Working close with the farmers and utilizing the freshest bounty on St. Croix is their top priority. Their love of food allows them to bring those local ingredients and passion alive on the plate and in the glass. Offering fresh-squeezed cocktails, locally-crafted beer, and a fantastic wine selection plus local Virgin Islands coffee, loose-leaf hot teas, and plenty of non-alcoholic choices. Locally-inspired cuisine with a new twist and the freshest ingredients allows the food to speak for itself in Breakfast Options, Lunch Share Plates, ‘Selfish’ Plates, Cheese Boards and much more! Dine in or Take Away. Whether you are Vegan, Vegetarian, Pescatarian, a Carnivore, a Cheese Lover, or Gluten Free, check them out and find new favorites! The Artist Is In
MEET COVER ARTIST LYN VOYTERSHARK
Lyn Voytershark
“My first canvas was a purple sunset with calypso musicians and dancers in silhouette. It was done in oils, I was seven, and it hung for a while over the ironing board. The prime wall space in my house was reserved for my mother’s portraits and paintings
of islanders. Betsy Voytershark was an active artist on St. Croix from the late ‘50s until she passed away at 61 in 1991. As Mother’s Day approaches I am reminded of her creative influence on me and of how fleeting time and life really is. My mom had many distractions from her art but she still put her energy and artistry into daily life. Here at Work & Rest there was a house to build, three kids to raise, schools to start up, animals to rescue, and centipedes to wrangle. No phone, no TV, no microwave, sometimes no power at all.
Growing up with Quadrille.
places. Often I am pulled aside by friends or strangers who treasure a painting or a memory. Now that I have resumed an artistic path, I can dedicate my own images to her. My early art education on St. Croix started inauspiciously in Kindergarten where I got ruler slaps for drawing on the inside of the coloring box lid. There was pottery with Conrad Knowles, sketching with Susie Brown, and watercolor lessons with Charles “Bud” Hawes who advised practice “every single day”. Mrs. Pihlcrantz at St. Dunstan’s entered me in a contest that netted, to my surprise, a trip to St. Thomas. My classmates were inspiring and accomplished VI artists such as Paul Youngblood, Lisa Etre and the late Maria Henle. Growing up here on St Croix was truly magical.
Lutheran Church in the Pink.
In the ‘60s, organic brown rice came snail mail to the Post Office and the Sears catalog really was the wish book. Betsy raised Siamese cats, mastered Yoga, and taught kids art at Country Day and Tamarind Schools. She painted scenery for Community Theater. My mom wasn’t too keen on cooking, sewing, or housework, and although I get clever with food and fabric, dishes and cobwebs are worthless rituals. It is astonishing to me that my mother somehow carved out time to paint and sketch people. She did portraits of Governor Evans and Judge Young among many others. Her artwork has travelled with Cruzan expats to far-flung Page 36 • April / May 2019
Rooster Surveying the Yard.
Scholarships from VI Council on the Arts helped me study Sculpture, Photography, and Fine Arts. After spending a year in Florence, Italy for Etching and Lithography, I sold my first piece to the Frederiksted artist Jean Merwin who sadly has also passed on.
Right: Mother and Child. Betsy Voytershark Below: A Slow Saturday Market.
That old sunset painting of mine is long gone, likely it was a frugal recycling of the stretchers, or maybe a termite snack, or a Hugo casualty. I don’t paint in oils now, but favor acrylics because I am way too impatient and will muddy work if it can’t dry fast enough. Brilliant saturated tropical colors are a hallmark. My favorite medium is playing with pixels on a computer. My primary toolbox is an iPad with various Apps. Using my photographic images, I creatively manipulate color, texture, and composition until I have that eureka moment. Random snippets and glimpses of daily life inspire me more than large encompassing views. Currently my work is in the Humane Learning Center Benefit show for animals at the Henle Gallery, The Quelbe & Quadrille exhibit in the Steeple Building, and is ongoing at Sweet Lime Furnishings in Constitution Hill.” Websites: Twenty20.com/SharkCrossing Lyn-Voytershark.FineArtAmerica.com FanPage: facebook.com/SharkXing Email: SharkCrossing@gmail.com w w w.stcroix thisweek.com

Our Danish Connection VELKOMMEN!
Music & Dance—A Happy Link from the Past with Denmark
We Deh Yah Cultiural Dancers.
(340) 776-0656. Page 38 • April / May 2019
by Nina York A local musical tradition, that enjoys great popularity among dance groups, carries the name Quelbe and can best be described as a combination of traditional polka music with a calypso touch. Musicians performing this very much local tradition enjoy iconic stature, and a performing group, known by the amusing pun title Stanley and the Ten Sleepless Knights, is the best known and enjoys a fan club with members in the thousands. But in recent times, a Danish band, who call themselves Polcalypso Band, has earned many kudos for having acquired the true Quelbe sound and has performed here numerous times to an enthusiastic audience. In the past, they have joined beloved Quelbe musicians like the late Jamesie, both in Denmark and here, and accompanied the local quadrille dance group We De Yah for a Denmark tour in 2017. Sadly, their leader Kazio Kierpaul passed away last year, but the band will continue, probably under the leadership of Hans Leonardo Pedersen on alto sax. But the Danish connection does not end there. The folk dance known here as quadrille has very much European origins, where it is known as Lanciers. Originally performed by dancers wearing helmets, holding banners and lances (hence its name), it soon became a more social and gracious routine, consisting of five rounds. The term quadrille is used in Denmark to designate the formation of four couples in a square facing each other at the start, led in the various steps by a caller. One of the numbers featured by local dancers carries the music known to all Danes as Bornholmer Ganglåt, so there is no doubt of the link. While the bourgeoisie danced the Lanciers in the island’s great houses back in the 1820’s, the enslaved house servants were watching and learning the steps, to perform later at holiday celebrations. While the Lanciers originated in Great Britain, where it was known as The Lancers’ Quadrilles, it was developed by a John Duval in 1817 and became very popular in England, thanks to Joseph Hart, and spread to France, where an unknown composer under the name J. Mikel composed new tunes for the dances. In the 1860’s, Les Lanciers came to Denmark and enjoyed great popularity among the elite. Dance schools adopted this dance routine with enthusiasm, and to this day, Lanciers is danced all over Denmark, with a bow to tradition, for festive occasions in many educational institutions and even at the Royal Court. Folk dance enjoys great popularity in Denmark, and our island has, on several occasions, welcomed Danish folk dance groups. The shared legacy of music and dance between our island and Denmark merits our interest and support. Nina York, born in Denmark but a St. Croix resident since 1976, has been a contributor for this publication since 2009 and was its Managing Editor from 1990 – 2003. She now offers tours for visitors from Denmark and the mainland, does translations, and volunteers for Rotary and the Friends of Denmark Society. w w w.stcroix thisweek.com
Island Weddings MARRY ME ON ST. CROIX!
Free Advice
I spoke to a new entrepreneur in the wedding industry recently that gave me pause. A prospective client asked about his service and wanted to meet to discuss the details. Eager for the business, he thoroughly presented his business model. The client was ready to book but, to ensure they would be getting “their money’s worth,” asked the vendor to comp them on part of the service and he obliged. I fell out of my seat when I heard this! I have been a new business owner and understand the desire to close the deal and make your dream a success. I have also been a client who wanted to ensure that the product/service to value ratio is equal. The client/vendor relationship is so delicate—when its good, its great, when it’s bad, it’s miserable for everyone. So how do you find the balance? As a seasoned professional, I would encourage new wedding vendors to create policies that support their business and build the market. Giving your services away for free may land the client, but depletes your morale, diminishes your reputation, and hurts your bottom line. Learn to say “No” with a smile; its ok to stand up for your business. If the client chooses another vendor, you have dodged a major bullet; there is more in the pipeline. If they decide to continue with your service policies, congratulations, you have overcome a big hurdle! As a client, who understands good service and what it takes to provide it, I never ‘sign on the dotted line’ if I have doubts about anything. I love getting a deal but also believe, in some situations, quality may prevail over price. Its hard to walk away from a service because they were already booked or out of your budget. Take a breath. Before you ask a vendor to do something outrageous, research alternatives; St. Croix has a wealth of talented wedding professionals to choose from. I leave you with two old adages—to the vendors, ‘no good deed goes unpunished’ and to the clients, ‘you get what you pay for.’ Apply these where needed. Dive Experience – At 36 Years, the Name Says It All!
Dive Experience turns 36 this year! Owner Michelle Pugh, a 41-year resident of St. Croix, learned to dive in LA in 1970. It all started with a high school class in tide pool biology followed by swimming lessons and an open water dive class at North Hollywood YMCA.
dive center owner on St Croix that actually dives every day—guiding lots of customers by request,” she says. Michelle’s diving adventures include the West coast (Mexico to Canada), the East coast (Virginia to Rhode Island), the Red Sea, Australia, Antarctica, Solomon Islands, lots of Caribbean islands plus Borneo and the Philippines and has dived every continent!
Michelle dived weekends and holidays and worked part time with Fish & Wildlife in the summers while attending school in San Diego. In the fall of 1977, she had a chance to go to St. Croix to teach diving. She fell in love with St. Croix and its diving and decided to start her own business. One of her most incredible dives was in 1979 as a photographer in Canada shooting killer whales for the book, A Whale Called Killer, by Erich Hoyt— an experience that would serve her well later on. Sam Halvorson, Captain, Instructor, Dive Master, and Videographer, has been on board for 30 years. He knows all the reefs and secret locations of many fish. His videos are a favorite souvenir! In 1993, along with Jacques Cousteau, Michelle was inducted into the Platinum Pro 5000, through SSI, and in March of 2004 into the Women Divers Hall of Fame for being the first woman to dive with killer whales in the wild, the first American

Toting a 100-ton Captain’s License, she has been on the St. Croix Fisheries Advisory Committee and on the Caribbean Council for Fisheries Management here since 1989. Michelle, who’s made over 10,000 dives on St. Croix, loves diving and it shows! “I am the only

We need to do what we can, right here in our own back yard to keep our reefs healthy.” “With Dive Experience reaching 36 years and me with over 41 years of only being in the dive business, I’d like to think we’re simply the best at what we do.” Truly, the name says it all!

Starting in St Croix, The Nature Conservancy and Partners Launch Revolutionary Aerial Mapping of Coral Reefs in the Caribbean
A revolutionary new effort to create the first ever high-resolution maps of the shallow waters of the Caribbean launched in St Croix. This groundbreaking initiative by The Nature Conservancy, Carnegie Institution for Science and Planet aims to understand coral reef ecosystems in a truly comprehensive way in order to effectively plan for coral reef restoration and protection. This advanced technology offers hope for vulnerable reefs, the marine wildlife that inhabits them, and the people whose livelihoods depend on them. The specialized aircraft collecting aerial images, called the Carnegie Airborne Observatory, launched missions in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, and began mapping critical reef habitats. The plane flew two subsequent missions a day for 16 straight days, flying transects across the East End Marine Park to gather data about the status of the coral reefs in the area. Following its mission over St Croix, the aircraft moved on to the Dominican Republic to map areas around Punta Cana. The plan is to expand this aerial imaging and mapping throughout the Caribbean. A vast majority of Caribbean countries and territories lack accurate and up-to-date maps of their own coral reefs, and this work aims to bridge these data gaps in the region. Without these baselines it is difficult to track and monitor changes, or to advise management of the most threatened areas that need immediate protection. This initiative will provide a consistent baseline at a level of accuracy that has never before been attained, acquiring data at multiple scales using state-of-the-art remote sensing technologies from drones, planes, and satellites. The results, once collected, will be shared with key government and conservation organizations to inform policy and protections. In addition to mapping coral reefs now from the sky, part of this mission includes analyzing pre- and post-hurricane satellite imagery on St. Croix. By comparing image mosaics from Planet, a company that collects daily satellite imagery at a global scale, scientists will be able to analyze visuals that were taken before and after the hurricanes to detect impacts to coral reefs from catastrophic hurricanes. In addition, they will be able to demonstrate the critical role that healthy reefs play in protecting vulnerable coastlines from storm events.

DRIVE SAFE— STAY LEFT Whether renting a car or crossing the street, it is vital to remember that traffic in the USVI flows from the left side of the road. St. Croix is 28 miles in length and 7 miles at the widest point with two major towns— Christiansted at the center on the north shore and Frederiksted at the west end. The Caribbean Sea which surrounds the island is always there to guide you along the roads that wind around the coast. Car rental agencies have a variety of vehicles available from sporty jeeps to roomy air-conditioned sedans, vans, and SUVs. The average price usually includes unlimited mileage but you fill the tank upon return! Both US and other driver’s licenses are recognized. The driver and front seat passenger are required by law to use seat belts and cell phone talking or texting is not allowed. Parking in Christiansted is limited and 2-hour parking on parts of Company and Queen Cross Streets is enforced. Look for the signs. There is daytime parking in the National Park Service lot near Ft. Christiansvaern, until 4:30 pm, and a public lot with fees on Strand and King Cross Street. Major roads are asphalt and usually well maintained. The Melvin H. Evans Highway is the only 4-lane, divided highway running from mid-island west to within 1 mile of Frederiksted. The speed limit is 55. In other areas, the 35 mph limit applies; in town, 20 mph unless otherwise posted. Let our Attractions & Tours pages (7-9) and our St. Croix Road Map (54 & 55) and town maps (56-58) help you plan your island tour!

Island Worship The history of our island is mirrored in its old church structures, many of which have recently been restored. The Moravian brethren, arriving here in the 1730s from Saxony in today’s Germany, founded their mission to bring Christianity to the enslaved part of the population. The historic Anglican (Episcopalian) churches built in Gothic style include St. John’s in Christiansted and, in Frederiksted, the beautifully restored St. Paul’s church. The large number of Irish settlers, along with Englishmen and Hispanics, have contributed to the presence of the Catholic church; Holy Cross in Christiansted is the oldest in the Virgin Islands. The Danish rule of the island from 1733 to 1917 brought the Lutheran church, which still plays a large role here. Lord God of Sabaoth in Christiansted occupies the former Dutch Reformed Church; Holy Trinity in Frederiksted was built shortly after the town was founded. The Dutch Reformed church (Presbyterian) now has a new mid-island home. These are just a few of the many (over 150) churches on St. Croix, from Seventh-Day Adventist to Methodist, Baptist, Church of God, and many more. Church attendance and activities are important to a large part of our population; visitors are always welcome at services, often a high point in their island experience. Many other faiths offer places of worship—a Jewish synagogue, a Hindu temple, and a Moslem mosque, to name a few. An easy-tofollow guide is actually the yellow pages of our local phone book beginning on Page 54.

Befolkningen. Virgin Islands befolkning er venlig men tilbageholdende. Man hilser gerne med “Good morning”, “Good Afternoon” og “Good Night.” Tider. Her som alle vegne, vær forsigtig. Lås bilen, gå ikke med værdifulde smykker i byen, og hold dig til de befolkede områder.

St. Croix Dive Sites 11.
A series of dive site descriptions.
The Pavillions – Lots of coral and sponge, very colorful dive. Sting Rays in sand on top of wall and occasional school of Spade Fish. Lobster and crabs, and tons of reef fish call this home. 12. The famous “Wall” at Cane Bay – Most popular beach dive on St. Croix, a bit of a swim north from the beach puts you in 3,000 feet of water. Great dive for beginners, lots of coral heads in shallow water and then the dramatic drop for the certified divers.

THIS NATIONAL PARK COMMEMORATES OUR DANISH HERITAGE (1733-1917).
CHRISTIANSTED WALKING TOUR Let’s start a leisurely walking tour of CHRISTIANSTED at the site of the Old Scale House 1 on the harborfront, known as the Wharf. One section of the 1856 structure displays the scale used in former days to weigh barrels of rum and sugar. The other section holds a bookstore and gift shop as well as an information center about all things St. Croix. This is one of a complex of five buildings comprising the Christiansted National Historic Site, established in 1952, administered by the National Park Service.

Originally, Government House 6 on King Street, was built as a home for a Danish merchant. That section dates from 1749; another section, the previous town house of a wealthy Danish plantation owner, was joined to it in 1826, together becoming the seat of the Danish West Indies government. The grand staircase and portico were added in 1830, as was the impressive ballroom/reception hall on the second floor by Governor General Peter von Scholten, who had his office and official residence here. The former are open to the public (entrance at mid-building on King Street). The Lutheran Church 7 across Queen Cross Street on King Street, was originally the Dutch Reformed Church, built in the 1740’s and transferred to the Lutherans in 1831, who brought the furnishings here from the Steeple Building. Later, the steeple was added. Walking up Queen Cross Street to Company Street takes you to Apothecary Hall 8 on the left corner, which holds both the tiny Apothecary Museum on Queen Cross Street, open anytime, and in the courtyard the Archaeological Museum, open only Saturdays 10 am-2 pm. Nearby on Company Street is the Old Market 9 , laid out in the original town plan from 1735, and still being used. The well dates from 1863. On this square you will also find the downtown Post Office.
Christiansted National Historic Site Established in 1952, Christiansted National Historic Site was the first unit of the National Park Saystem in the US Virgin Islands. The park’s historic buidings and grounds commemorate the Danish heritage (1733-1917) of the town of Christiansted, St. Croix, which was named in honor of the reigning King of Denmark and Norway, Christian VI. In the 1700s, Christiansted was part of a mercantile system that linked Europe,West Africa, and the Caribbean in the infamous “Triangular Trade.” Christiansted was the first town in the Lesser Antilles to be built on the grid system and to have a building code. Its distinctive colonial architecture reflects the town’s status as capital of the Danish West Indies (1755-1871); the great wealth generated by the export of cane sugar, molasses, and rum; and the influence of government building inspectors. Governor General Peter von Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the enslaved population in the Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848, from adjacent Buddhoe Park 2. The park contains a bronze bust of the renowned slave rebellion leader. The Oscar E. Henry Customs House 3 was built in the 1800s. The Freedom Fountain 4, facing the pier, was installed for the Emancipation 150th Anniversary Celebration. After severe damage during a labor insurrection in 1878, the town was rebuilt in Victorian style. Victoria House 5, on Strand Street, and Apothecary Hall 6, 63 on King Cross Street between King and Queen Streets, preserve the Frederksted architecture of that time. Both received storm damage in September. The Visitor’s Bureau 7, is located upstairs on Strand Street above the Frederiksted Mall and next door to the historic light blue building housing the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts 8. Frederiksted is home to a number of historic churches, including St. Paul’s Episcopal Church 9, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church 10, Friedensberg Moravian Church 11, and St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church 12. The newly restored Old Danish School 13, on Hospital Street and Market Street, is a handsome building. At Strand and Queen Cross Streets is the Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library 14, built in 1803. The Market Place 15, is still in use today, as it was in 1751 at the founding of Frederiksted.

Musings and Metaphors: Revolution, Evolution and Devolution
APRIL 10-13
by Alscess Lewis-Brown, Chair
T
ransfer traces the lives of those on Anna’s Fancy, the Clausen estate on Saint Croix in the Danish West Indies handed down through three generations. An historical novel and the sequel to Fireburn (OC Publishing 2017), Transfer sees Niels Clausen, the illegitimate child of a Danish landowner and his black mistress who both died as a result of the 1878 worker revolt, leave his adoptive mother’s sugar plantation and sail to England to continue his education. With the help of Toby, a British aristocrat, Ivy, a lady’s maid turned lady and her botanist husband, Timothy, Niels challenges the perceptions on the streets of London of a black man at the turn of the 20th century. His development as a writer and political protagonist continues as he travels to Denmark and France where he meets up with childhood friends, Javier and Fabiana Gomez, before returning to Saint Croix. The Danish West Indies face an uncertain future as the declining sugar industry lessens Denmark’s interest in their colonial outpost. Niels becomes increasingly involved in the future of the islands as war looms and concerns grow that Germany might covet a presence in the Caribbean. Will the islands’ security be guaranteed by the transfer of power to America? The highs and lows of Niels’ life are punctuated by the crossing of oceans and cultures as well as political manoeuvrings of a turbulent time in Europe, the United States and the Caribbean. Released on March 31st, 2019 to coincide with Transfer Day, Transfer will be available at Undercover Books, Eden South, St George Estate Botanical Garden and CMCA in Frederiksted. Join the author for a book signing at Undercover Books on Thursday 11th April at 4:30pm. w w w.stcroix thisweek.com
We live in an age that encourages deep contemplation, especially for those of us who muse about these unsettling times; there is much metaphor that we can draw on as we seek answers. The Caribbean region changes, along with the rest of the world, and demand for such is always somewhere on the horizon. Time does not wait for any of this to cycle out, so we continue to evolve. As we become what we are becoming, it often appears to be a devolution. For this reason, reading and writing matters. These precious acts help us to articulate and situate circumstances, ideas, and issues, especially when we open ourselves to readers, and writers from outside of our own little nest. The works of our guest authors reflect those ideas expressed in this year’s event. Meet and talk with authors from the VI, the wider Caribbean, the US, Australia, South Africa, and Norway. The Festival will toast ideas and celebrate the imagination through literature, panel discussions, and workshops on writing and publishing. The Children’s Corner will be operated by the Children’s Museum of St. Croix and named now after Janice Tutein, folkloric storyteller and Culture Bearer. Main events will be held at UVI, but other venues are included. The idea for an annual Literary Festival and Book Fair is credited to Dr. Simon Jones- Hendrickson, former Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and

Bill and Kim Littell are the new owners of Tropical Therapy in Gallows Bay, having moved to St. Croix 7 months ago from Florida. “My husband Bill and I have been visiting St. Croix for eight years and fell in love with the island after our first visit in 2010, liking the small-town feel and the camaraderie of the people. We also love being on the water— beachin’, boating, snorkeling or cooking out with friends; we also love live music so St Croix is heaven for us! After first meeting Maggie Luce five years ago, I knew I wanted to be a part of Tropical Therapy. Maggie and Debbie Aronstein have done an amazing job over the last 28 years, establishing a successful business and a wonderful experience for their clients. I am a graduate of the Florida School of Massage in Gainseville, Florida. I left a practice in Ocala and, even though I continue to see clients there several times a year, I am excited to take on Tropical Therapy, along with my wonderful staff that includes Julie Edwards, Sandra Sanford, Maggie Luce, Debra Aronstein, Tina Henle, and Joann Jackett. Our current services include Swedish Massage, Deep Tissue Massage, Hot Stone Massage, Couples Massage, Rolfing, and Reflexology with more new ones to come such as our Spa parties (girls’ night in) offering mini-massage sessions, detox foot soaks, facials, scrubs, and mud wraps. Each party is customized to what each group of girls wants, including tapas & drinks! We use doTERRA Essential Oils and dermalogica Skin Care Products exclusively. Distilled from plants and with relaxing and renewing benefits, doTERRA oils are used by themselves and in homemade natural scrubs, candles, and body butters. Dermalogica products are the No. 1 choice of skin care professionals. At Tropical Therapy, we take the time to get to know each of our clients and strive to help them feel welcome and comfortable. It’s important to me to have a team of therapist that listen to their clients and pay attention to their specific needs. Each of our therapists are phenomenal and unique in their own way, specializing in multiple modalities, and we all continue to grow through continuing education each year.”

In April Mars is still high in the sky, but now seen north of the bright star Aldebaran, in Taurus, the Bull. By May, Mars is low in the western sky. In April Jupiter rises earlier, around 11:20 p.m., and then in May at 9:15 p.m. Saturn, is seen against the background of stars of Sagittarius, rises in April around 1:00 a.m., in May about 11:10 p.m.
A
If you are up early in the morning, before the Sun overpowers the night, the very, very Bright Venus will dominate the northeastern sky.
t night, all the stars you can see are placed in groups called constellations. The first thing you need to do is to forget trying to see the figures suggested by the constellation names. Most of constellations look nothing at all like they should. Perhaps one of the easiest sign posts to find is the Big Dipper. Face North and look for seven fairly bright stars which form a dipper or a cooking pot -- three stars mark the handle and four more the bowl. Some people know that if you draw a line through the two stars at the end of the bowl and extend the line away from the bowl, you come to the North Star. Now, remember, the North Star is NOT the brightest star in the sky. In fact, it really isn’t bright at all. It happens to be at a point in the heavens almost directly over the North Pole of the Earth. So having Page 64 • April / May 2019
found the North Star, if you did not know which way was North, you would now know. But, go back to the Big Dipper. Draw the line through the same two stars at the end of the bowl, but in the opposite direction. You will come to the bright star Regulus, the heart of Leo, the Lion. Leo is made of a backwards question mark, with Regulus as the dot at the base of the question mark, which form the lion’s head and the front part of its body and a small triangle of faint stars which form his hind quarters and tail. Go back to the Big Dipper once more. This time use the Dipper’s handle. Follow the arc of the handle away from the Dipper to the bright star Arcturus and then speed on to Spica. Arcturus is the brightest star in Bootes, the Herdsman. Spica is a grain of wheat being held in the hand of Virgo, the Goddess of the
Harvest. Once you have found Spica, look even lower near the southern horizon and you may find the Southern Cross. It is rather small, but is it does look like a cross and it is one of the star groups people like to see. From the island you can see the Southern Cross and the Big Dipper in the sky at the same time. As the Earth goes around the Sun it passes though clouds of dust left behind by comets. This causes a meteor shower. The best chance of seeing the meteors (shooting stars) from such a shower is from a dark location after midnight. The maximum of the Lyrid meteor shower is the night of April 22nd-23rd, unfortunately this year the Moon will overpower all but the brightest meteors. The Eta Aquarid meteor shower peaks the night of May 6th7th. Away from bright lights you might see 60 meteors per hour. w w w.stcroix thisweek.com
