Welcome to our beautiful Virgin Islands of the United States. Our islands are unique in what they each offer and our communities are filled with people who are proud of our storied history. While visiting, I encourage you to immerse yourself in our culture and to explore the unique offerings of all four Islands that make up our paradise. St. Croix, the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, sits to the south of our small island chain and is renowned for its pastoral landscapes, Danish architecture and historical landmarks. With its offshore wrecks and unbelievably beautiful underwater reefs, St. Croix is also a popular destination for diving enthusiasts. Be sure to visit the historic towns of Frederiksted and Christiansted and indulge in St. Croix’s renowned art and delicious culinary scenes. St. John is one of the smaller U.S. Virgin Islands and conservation center of the territory. It is best known for its pristine beaches and the attractions within the Virgin Islands National Park, which occupies more than half the island. The lands in the Virgin Islands National Park shelter migrant birds and the mangroves support corals and anemones. As with all the Virgin islands, you will find that St. John provides a rich mix of our culture and history. St. Thomas is our business and shopping center and the seat of government. Charlotte Amalie is the capital town of the U.S. Virgin Islands and is one of the busiest ports of call for cruise ships in the Caribbean. St. Thomas is among the most popular destinations in the Caribbean for sailing and yachting enthusiasts. Water Island is the smallest of the U.S. Virgin Islands and rests just off the coast of St. Thomas. It is mostly residential but offers fun attractions like Honeymoon Beach and quaint accommodations. The island can be reached by ferry from the Crown Bay Marina or by other vessels. As the Lieutenant Governor and Governor, both Treganza Roach and I wish you a warm, fun-filled stay and please accept our invitation to return often to our paradise.

For a more relaxed approach, swim in the crystalline waters of Buck Island, the only naturally occurring underwater National Monument in the U.S. History buffs can experience St. Croix’s vibrant history through its architecture, historic landmarks, food, music and traditions. Explore the magnificent Estate Whim Museum, a restored 18th century greathouse and sugar plantation, Forts Christiansvaern and Frederik or tour the lush gardens of the St. George Village Botanical Garden. Early risers can catch a picturesque sunrise at Point Udall, the easternmost point in the United States. Christiansted and Frederiksted, our main seaside towns, are a shopper’s nirvana with charming boutiques offering everything from handcrafted jewelry and apparel to colorful local art. 23rd Annual Mango Melee! Mango Melee, handed down now for 23 years, makes it a relatively ‘new’ but fun tradition on St. Croix! Tropical fruits themselves, are one of the defining ingredients of the Caribbean and, one could say that, mangoes are the national pastime! They have melted into the cuisines and culture and become the comfort food of the region nourishing both body and soul. Mangoes have been grown for more than 6000 years, native to South Asia and introduced to the Caribbean in the 1700s. Today over 1000 plus varieties are grown all over the world. A 10-20-year old tree can produce up to 300 mangoes! What’s the best mango? What is the sweetest mango? How do I care for my mango tree? Come to the festival and find out answers to these questions and more. Develop a greater appreciation of tropical fruit, especially mangoes, and learn about the many ways they can be used. Also come for the food competition and sale, “Mango Dis, Mango Dat,” demonstrations and tastings, a Fruit ID contest, and the popular kids’ and adults’ Mango Eating contest. There’ll be cultural dance performances, moko jumbies, live music, a tropical rum drinks bar, and a tropical fruits silent auction. Entry fee, $10; children under 12, free. Dear Visitor,

Its time to hone your paddling skills, push your stamina, and play to win at the 19th Annual Kayak for Kids benefit for the Queen Louise Home for Children in Frederiksted. You can do 5 miles alone or with a partner starting at 9:30am from Fort Frederik Beach, finish by 3pm. $50. Entry fee; $20. Kayak rental. Get friends and family to participate, be a sponsor, or simply donate to the cause. If you raise the most sponsorship donations, you will win a prize! All donations are tax-deductible and donors will receive a tax receipt from LSSVI. Founded in 1904 as the West Indian Committee for Child Care by Crown Princess Louise of Denmark, it is now Lutheran Social Services of the VI, the largest social service agency in the Virgin Islands still committed, in its second century, and guided by its motto “by love, serve one another.” See related story, Pg 59, “Healthy Living—A Challenge of Former Days in Our Islands.”

Sincerely,

Joseph Boschulte Commissioner USVI Department of Tourism w w w.stcroix thisweek.com

Duggan’s Reef In May,1983, Frank Duggan was writing menus, purchasing used restaurant equipment, praying a little, and putting together a business plan to fulfill his dream of opening a beachside restaurant on St. Croix. Fast forward 36 years, Duggan’s brown hair is now white, his walk is a little slower, but the dream lives—Duggan’s Reef gets better every day. Frank is a Massachusetts native who arrived on St. Croix in 1975. He is a Vietnam veteran who was awarded the Army Commendation Medal, the Bronze Star, and the Purple Heart for valor. A graduate of the University of Massachusetts, he began working as a bartender as a student. During his summers, he worked at the Black Pearl in Newport, Rhode Island and later at the Bull and Finch Pub made famous by the TV show, Cheers. Over the years, Frank has hosted many famous people; early on, Maureen O’Hara was a regular. The late senator Ted Kennedy and family always dined at Duggan’s their first and last night on the island. Ex New York Knick, Walt Frazier, Olympic hockey legend, Mike Eruzione, retired Red Sox pitcher Jim Lonborg and wife Rosie drop by. Vice President and Mrs. Joe Biden dined last Christmas. But, Frank’s favorite customer over the years is Rachel Robinson, widow of baseball pioneer, Jackie Robinson. Duggan’s Reef has a varied menu specializing in local seafood and island-grown herbs and vegetables. Their motto is “Fresh fish or No Fish.” Their goal is for everyone to leave happy. Chef Joe Stedman and his seasoned kitchen staff do a great job. Try any of the lobster or fish preparations that local customers continue to order time and time again. When asked why the restaurant has been successful for so long Frank says, “A friendly, knowledgeable staff, and generous portions of food and drink. Over all, we like what we do and we hope it shows.” It does!

The Artist Is In

MEET COVER ARTIST MARILYN PHILLIPS MAY “Celebration: 50 years on St. Croix!!! I am so very thankful to have enjoyed the greatest part of my life here on this beautiful, colorful, friendly, WARM island of St. Croix, VI, surrounded by the everchanging turquoise Marilyn Phillips May Caribbean Sea under a canopy of cobalt blue skies. What could ever beat that as a natural art studio? Add the wonderful Caribbean people and a landscape full of flowers, stone sugar mills, and the Roseway ~ the possibilities are endless for a painter. Life is a love affair. Loving putting paint to paper and canvas (always a jolly experiment); loving the natural beauty all around me, loving catching people with my pencil and sketchbook in airports, doctor’s offices, etc. I love recording the unique features of each person I sketch. I also work in water colors and acrylics. I try to have at least a little red in most of my paintings; sometimes a LOT of red, and I paint with pure strong colors. My love affair with art began as a child. My father was my hero and had a love of the arts which worked out in his writing many short stories and three historical novels.

Waitin for Lunch.

I was blessed to have the privilege of art education at the Rochester Institute of Technology, the Vesper George School of Art, Boston, and The Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando de Madrid (Spain). My work has been enhanced locally by Life Drawing Workshops with Cindy Male and Mike Walsh, and Water Color Workshops with Alexis Lavine. I worked as a Christian missionary volunteer (1999 – 2010) in Nairobi, Kenya, Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico, and Honduras, where I was able to contribute my skills to designing brochures, illustrating materials, teaching art, and contributing both art work and articles to World Gospel Mission’s international magazine. One of my jobs was to produce thick line drawings for illustration of Spanish Sunday School materials which the children could color and cut out to take home. All my daughters are Crucians - the Francis girls. Susy is a Doctor of Psychology in Chicago, married to Attorney Roger Best and mom to Gabriel Luke, 20 months. Mickey is a Public Relations and Marketing Consultant (also Chicago) and Mom to Ari, 8 and Rafi, 5. Liza lives in College Station, TX and is mom to Mayah, 12 and Micah, 9. Her husband, Terry Gentry, is a research professor at Texas A & M University. They are my best friends. Page 36 • June / July 2019

I occasionally paint with the Palletteers, and I am a founding member of the St. Croix Artist Guild. My paintings were included in the Guild’s art show “Spring Forward” at the Top Hat Gallery, May 16 - 18. We are beginning preparations for “The Art Show” at the Canegata Multipurpose Building in January of 2020. Put it on your calendar!

Top Hat Gallery. I also hold a painting class there on Saturdays, 10 am to noon. I assist those with a desire to paint in developing their skills. Currently some of my paintings of marine creatures are on display at Franklin’s on the Waterfront, Frederiksted,

I actually have not seen many changes in the island over the years but the boardwalk is my favorite addition, and I LOVE the by-pass. (A piece of history - the Antilles Air Boats used to land in the harbor and park at the end of the Pan Am Pavilion. They were one-man crewed and I had the fun of riding up with the pilot.)” My Caribbean-flavored landscape paintings, portraits and figure paintings are on display at

I have also exhibited at Good Hope School’s Caribbean Fine Arts Show, the Art Show at Canegata, the The Botanical Garden of the Virgin Islands, Danica and Maufe Galleries, on St. Croix, and venues in Cape Cod, MA, Chicago, IL, San Diego, CA, and Roatan, Honduras.” Marilyn P. Our Danish Connection VELKOMMEN!

Healthy Living – A Challenge of Former Days in our Islands

Early days at the Queen Louise Home in Frederiksted; Danish deaconesses look over the care and feeding of young children.

(340) 776-0656. Page 38 • June / July 2019

by Nina York The universally significant field of human nutrition has undergone immense developmental changes in the last hundred years, to pick a time span that is measurable by normal standards. It is almost impossible to summarize the many discoveries that have taken place to help us eat healthy foods, yet countered by the huge impact of processed foods creating unhealthy diets. Since this is not a nutrition column, I will try to place us back in Danish times in the islands for a minute, allowing us to realize the many differences from today’s diets. First off, not having refrigeration was a fundamental barrier to preserving most edibles. The only solutions were curing and salting of the food items that lent themselves to that process. Excessive sodium does not contribute to good health and makes you very thirsty. It seems as if the many nutritional advantages offered by vegetables and fruit available here in abundance were not utilized to any great extent. Prior to Emancipation, the enslaved population relied on using the provision grounds at the plantations to grow tubers and shrubs like pigeon peas, cassava, sweet potato, kallaloo bush, and bananas. Breadfruit was introduced thanks to Captain Bligh’s initiative of spreading to the Caribbean this starchy crop originally found in Tahiti. Because the daily life of a great majority of the population was strenuous, with a long workday in the hot sun, starchy foods providing high energy made up most diets. When we look at statistics from the 19th century we learn that most lives were far shorter than they are today. Since the Danes were expert record-keepers, we have access to so many documents illustrating that sad statistic. Infants and toddlers were among the hardest hit, and an early death would hit children of both rich and poor. Lack of knowledge about hygiene and the ingestion of contaminated water contributed to the high mortality rate. In the early 1900’s the Crown Princess, later Queen, Louise of Denmark took a great interest in the Danish West Indies, as our Virgin Islands were called. The Pastor of the Lutheran Church in Frederiksted conveyed to her the serious infant mortality rate on St. Croix, which prompted her majesty to dispatch a group of deaconesses to not only open a children’s home in Frederiksted and later also in Christiansted, but to have these brave women travel to the many plantations and instruct the young women working there about hygiene and care and feeding of infants. That children’s home is still active today under the name Queen Louise Home for Children, administered by the Lutheran Social Services. Today, the children at risk admitted there may be malnourished from parental neglect but will soon thrive under loving care at the Home. Nina York, born in Denmark but a St. Croix resident since 1976, has been a contributor for this publication since 2009 and was its Managing Editor from 1990 – 2003. She now offers tours for visitors from Denmark and the mainland, does translations, and volunteers for Rotary and the Friends of Denmark Society. w w w.stcroix thisweek.com

Island Weddings MARRY ME ON ST. CROIX!

Wearing Both Hats

In a conversation recently with a solopreneur in the service industry that gave me pause, a new client had inquired about his service and wanted to meet to discuss pricing and packages. Eager to land this prestigious client, he was excited to present his business model. During the meeting the client was ready to book, but wanted to make sure they would be getting “their money’s worth” and asked the service provider to perform part of the service for free. As a growing business, he obliged this request and landed the client. This is tough subject to broach as I have been a new business owner, and know the feeling of wanting to be a success, and have also been a client who wanted to ensure that the service to value ratio is equal. So how do you handle this? Now as a seasoned professional, I would encourage new business owners in the Wedding industry to create a policy that not only supports your business but builds the market as well. Giving services away for free depletes your morale, your bottom line, and you still must complete the same if not more work. Learn to say ‘no’ with a smile; its ok to stand up for your business. If the client chooses another vendor, you have dodged a bullet—there is usually more in the pipeline. If they decide to continue with your service and policy, congratulations you have overcome one of the hurdles of being a business owner. Savor it and get to work! As a client who understands good service and what it takes to provide it, I personally never “sign on the dotted line” if I have any concerns. I love getting a deal, but in sometimes quality should prevail over price. Its easy to become fixated on someone or something especially when it comes to planning a wedding and difficult to walk away from a service you really wanted because the vendor was already booked or out of your budget. If your dream vendor doesn’t work out, breathe and move on knowing it was probably for the best. For more info, planning tips, and resources visit www.vibridalguide.com Quiana L. Sail With the “Legend” Aboard Charis+

Sail with local sailing legend and calypso recording artist Llewellyn Westerman aboard his 6-passenger, 37’ locally-designed-and-built performance trimaran Charis+. Llewellyn is a sailor with over 50 years of experience sailing to Buck Island. His understanding of the wind, weather and currents, and awareness of aquatic life, flora, and fauna of Buck Island is sure to enrich your sailing experience. You’ll enter the St. Croix Yacht Club and meet him at a small dock taking a seat in a dinghy boat with a hand-rowed trip out to Charis+. As you stow your things and get settled in the spacious cockpit, Llewellyn, and his first mate, will prepare to set sail for Buck Island and, within minutes, you’ll be silently underway. It’s a great day to enjoy a brown bag lunch or something from your favorite deli. Llewellyn provides fresh water and snorkeling equipment. It is in Nevis that Llewellyn first spent time on boats as a child, sailing and fishing with his brother Inglore and their father, Aurthur. Aurthur was a boat captain and fisherman in Nevis and

by George Silver and built by George, Llewellyn, Inglore, and friends after Charis was destroyed during Hurricane Lenny in 1999. Construction began in 2000 and she was launched in 2002. Listen to online reviews: “Llewellyn was so personable, like we were family or old friends. So much fun and so informative! A definite must do!”

Lewellyn Westerman

Llewellyn’s grandfather, Richard Westerman, was also a boat captain and sailed cargo vessels between St. Kitts and Nevis. Llewellyn came to St. Croix in 1960 and lived and worked at Grapetree Bay Hotel for 20 years performing music at night and taking guests to Buck Island by day. He sailed three boats before buying a 36’ trimaran named Charis, in 1979, and starting Llewellyn’s Charter. Charis+ was designed

In 2004, she was inducted into the Women Divers Hall of Frame for being the first woman to dive with killer whales in the wilds of Canada, the first American woman to teach diving in Moscow, Russia and for establishing the mooring system on St Croix to protect the coral reefs. Attendees will be treated to three presentations on topics that impact St. Croix’s coral reef ecosystems. The Visitor’s Center at the Park will also be open to explore. Saturday’s Coralpalooza, the main World Oceans Day event, is an international celebration of coral reefs and reef restoration originally started in Key Largo, Florida by the Coral Restoration Foundation. Triton’s Realm is bringing the event to St. Croix for the second year in a row and is excited to connect environmental groups with island residents and visitors. Attendees will learn about local coral restoration efforts and dive or snorkel the coral farm with The Nature Conservancy and Sweet Bottom Dive Center. Coral trees, out-planting and future restoration plans will be covered during sessions offered at the event. Local environmental organizations will be in attendance with informational booths to educate the public about their outreach programs and volunteer opportunities. Pre-registration will be required for the dive and snorkel portion of the festival for a fee at Sweet Bottom Dive Center; the outreach area is free and all are welcome. ARRIVAL. US citizens don’t need a passport; departing visitors need a photo ID. LOCATION. St. Croix lies at 17 North latitude and 64 West longitude, about 700 miles from the equator. The Virgin Islands are part of the Antilles chain from the Bahamas down to Trinidad. St. Croix is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea. VIRGIN ISLANDERS. Virgin Islanders are a reserved but friendly people. “Good Morning,” “Good Afternoon,” and “Good Night” are welcome Crucian greetings. Everyone speaks English or a lilting version of it. CLIMATE. Year-round temperatures range in the 80s during the day, 70s most nights, with summer somewhat warmer. Easterly trade winds keep the humidity down. Most island showers are over in minutes. Residents collect rainwater from rooftops into household cisterns. Saltwater distillation plants help the supply. With water scarce, it is used sparingly. TIME. We are on Atlantic Standard Time (AST), one hour earlier than EST but the same as EST during Daylight Savings. WHAT TO WEAR. Island dress is casual but bathing suits and men without shirts in town or grocery stores is frowned upon. Men don’t need ties or jackets; hats are great sun protectors for everyone. No adaptors needed for personal plug-ins. WE ARE HERE TO HELP YOU. The Visitors’ Bureau is located upstairs in the Frederiksted Mall and next to the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts on Strand Street; open weekdays and cruise ship days. The seasoned traveler doesn’t take chances. Lock your car, don’t wear valuPage 48 • June / July 2019

COMMUNICATIONS. St. Croix has several radio stations and three television stations; Cable TV carries the national news stations. Two newspapers are published daily; also an online daily. New York and Miami papers arrive each morning. TELEPHONE SERVICE. The local area code is 340 but you need not dial it for local numbers. Phone cards are sold at many shops throughout the island. We have local Sprint and ATT stores for any forgotten cell phone accessories. POSTAL RATES. As part of the US postal system, 1st class mail is .50 cents for the first ounce, postcards are .35 cents, international rates are $1.20 for cards and letters. See maps for post office locations. MARINE LIFE. All native plants, animals, fish (unless harvested for food), coral and shells are protected under the Indigenous Species Act. You will not be permitted to leave the territory with any plants or marine life in your possession. HOLIDAYS. We celebrate US Federal holidays and local ones as well. DRIVE SAFE— STAY LEFT Whether renting a car or crossing the street, it is vital to remember that traffic in the USVI flows from the left side of the road. St. Croix is 28 miles in length and 7 miles at the widest point with two major towns— Christiansted at the center on the north shore and Frederiksted at the west end. The Caribbean Sea which surrounds the island is always there to guide you along the roads that wind around the coast. Car rental agencies have a variety of vehicles available from sporty jeeps to roomy air-conditioned sedans, vans, and SUVs. The average price usually includes unlimited mileage but you fill the tank upon return! Both US and other driver’s licenses are recognized. The driver and front seat passenger are required by law to use seat belts and cell phone talking or texting is not allowed. Parking in Christiansted is limited and 2-hour parking on parts of Company and Queen Cross Streets is enforced. Look for the signs. There is daytime parking in the National Park Service lot near Ft. Christiansvaern, until 4:30 pm, and a public lot with fees on Strand and King Cross Street. Major roads are asphalt and usually well maintained. The Melvin H. Evans Highway is the only 4-lane, divided highway running from mid-island west to within 1 mile of Frederiksted. The speed limit is 55. In other areas, the 35 mph limit applies; in town, 20 mph unless otherwise posted. Let our Attractions & Tours pages (7-9) and our St. Croix Road Map (54 & 55) and town maps (56-58) help you plan your island tour!

Island Worship The history of our island is mirrored in its old church structures, many of which have recently been restored. The Moravian brethren, arriving here in the 1730s from Saxony in today’s Germany, founded their mission to bring Christianity to the enslaved part of the population. The historic Anglican (Episcopalian) churches built in Gothic style include St. John’s in Christiansted and, in Frederiksted, the beautifully restored St. Paul’s church. The large number of Irish settlers, along with Englishmen and Hispanics, have contributed to the presence of the Catholic church; Holy Cross in Christiansted is the oldest in the Virgin Islands. The Danish rule of the island from 1733 to 1917 brought the Lutheran church, which still plays a large role here. Lord God of Sabaoth in Christiansted occupies the former Dutch Reformed Church; Holy Trinity in Frederiksted was built shortly after the town was founded. The Dutch Reformed church (Presbyterian) now has a new mid-island home. These are just a few of the many (over 150) churches on St. Croix, from Seventh-Day Adventist to Methodist, Baptist, Church of God, and many more. Church attendance and activities are important to a large part of our population; visitors are always welcome at services, often a high point in their island experience. Many other faiths offer places of worship—a Jewish synagogue, a Hindu temple, and a Moslem mosque, to name a few. An easy-tofollow guide is actually the yellow pages of our local phone book beginning on Page 54.

Befolkningen. Virgin Islands befolkning er venlig men tilbageholdende. Man hilser gerne med “Good morning”, “Good Afternoon” og “Good Night.” Tider. Her som alle vegne, vær forsigtig. Lås bilen, gå ikke med værdifulde smykker i byen, og hold dig til de befolkede områder.

THIS NATIONAL PARK COMMEMORATES OUR DANISH HERITAGE (1733-1917).

CHRISTIANSTED WALKING TOUR Let’s start a leisurely walking tour of CHRISTIANSTED at the site of the Old Scale House 1 on the harborfront, known as the Wharf. One section of the 1856 structure displays the scale used in former days to weigh barrels of rum and sugar. The other section holds a bookstore and gift shop as well as an information center about all things St. Croix. This is one of a complex of five buildings comprising the Christiansted National Historic Site, established in 1952, administered by the National Park Service.

Originally, Government House 6 on King Street, was built as a home for a Danish merchant. That section dates from 1749; another section, the previous town house of a wealthy Danish plantation owner, was joined to it in 1826, together becoming the seat of the Danish West Indies government. The grand staircase and portico were added in 1830, as was the impressive ballroom/reception hall on the second floor by Governor General Peter von Scholten, who had his office and official residence here. The former are open to the public (entrance at mid-building on King Street). The Lutheran Church 7 across Queen Cross Street on King Street, was originally the Dutch Reformed Church, built in the 1740’s and transferred to the Lutherans in 1831, who brought the furnishings here from the Steeple Building. Later, the steeple was added. Walking up Queen Cross Street to Company Street takes you to Apothecary Hall 8 on the left corner, which holds both the tiny Apothecary Museum on Queen Cross Street, open anytime, and in the courtyard the Archaeological Museum, open only Saturdays 10 am-2 pm. Nearby on Company Street is the Old Market 9 , laid out in the original town plan from 1735, and still being used. The well dates from 1863. On this square you will also find the downtown Post Office.

Christiansted National Historic Site Established in 1952, Christiansted National Historic Site was the first unit of the National Park Saystem in the US Virgin Islands. The park’s historic buidings and grounds commemorate the Danish heritage (1733-1917) of the town of Christiansted, St. Croix, which was named in honor of the reigning King of Denmark and Norway, Christian VI. In the 1700s, Christiansted was part of a mercantile system that linked Europe,West Africa, and the Caribbean in the infamous “Triangular Trade.” Christiansted was the first town in the Lesser Antilles to be built on the grid system and to have a building code. Its distinctive colonial architecture reflects the town’s status as capital of the Danish West Indies (1755-1871); the great wealth generated by the export of cane sugar, molasses, and rum; and the influence of government building inspectors. Governor General Peter von Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the enslaved population in the Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848, from adjacent Buddhoe Park 2. The park contains a bronze bust of the renowned slave rebellion leader. The Oscar E. Henry Customs House 3 was built in the 1800s. The Freedom Fountain 4, facing the pier, was installed for the Emancipation 150th Anniversary Celebration. After severe damage during a labor insurrection in 1878, the town was rebuilt in Victorian style. Victoria House 5, on Strand Street, and Apothecary Hall 6, 63 on King Cross Street between King and Queen Streets, preserve the Frederksted architecture of that time. Both received storm damage in September. The Visitor’s Bureau 7, is located upstairs on Strand Street above the Frederiksted Mall and next door to the historic light blue building housing the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts 8. Frederiksted is home to a number of historic churches, including St. Paul’s Episcopal Church 9, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church 10, Friedensberg Moravian Church 11, and St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church 12. The newly restored Old Danish School 13, on Hospital Street and Market Street, is a handsome building. At Strand and Queen Cross Streets is the Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library 14, built in 1803. The Market Place 15, is still in use today, as it was in 1751 at the founding of Frederiksted.

his historical novel tells the story of Alexander Hamilton’s mother Rachael. Born on the tropical island of Nevis, in the British West Indies in 1729, with an ideal childhood of flowers, warm seas, and clear blue skies, she was destined for a life of much heartache. We know of the rocket ship Alexander Hamilton, but we do not know about his launch pad, his mother. HIS-tory tells about him, but here is HER-story about her. It can be said that ‘A MOTHER NEVER LET’S GO OF HER SON’S HAND.’ Even after her death. Rachael stayed with Alexander throughout his life. On St. Croix she died at 39, in bed with him beside her when he was only 13; they had both come down with “the fever” and shared her bed so the doctor could bleed them both at the same time. Her life was complicated, more complicated than most women because she was so determined — determined to do ‘her’ thing, no matter the consequences, not ordinary in the 1700’s. In all the men she passed through and all the men she was accused of ‘passing through,’ the one she birthed that was worth all the pain was to recreate our nation. She devoted her life to Alexander and, after her life ended, she remained on his shoulder to love him and advise him. She was a good mother, none were better. In the book, we imagine her introducing Alexander to George Washington— “General Washington you need a son, my son needs a father, please take Alexander, he will follow you.” A mother’s understanding of her child’s needs, even after she is gone, remain a constant whisper in her son’s ear and he can feel her in his heart. A son raised by a strong mother will always accept a strong woman as his wife, for a strong man never puts a ceiling over a woman’s head only a floor under her feet. Please read the whole story of this dynamic woman and the influence she had on her son as he went about creating the America we now enjoy. – R.W. Available at Undercover Books & Gifts and on Amazon.

#KeepCrucianVICaribbeanCultureAlive Annually, June is designated as National Caribbean American Heritage Month (NCAHM) in respectful recognition of the interdisciplinary, exceptional and transcultural contributions made to the United States of America by persons of Caribbean Heritage. There are annual proclamations crafted and distributed in local, national and international media networks to shed light on the important role of the Caribbean and its people in the USA and beyond.

As VI Freedom Week extends from June 26th to July 3rd annually, July is designated for observances, celebrations and commemorations honoring Virgin Islands Emancipation, Family Genealogy & Reunions, Bamboula cultural heritage traditions, and freedom with resilience. The Bamboula is an art and science that manifests as more than music, dance and song while including ancestral spiritual legacies in contemporary times honoring Crucian and inclusive VI Caribbean culture.

The Virgin Islands Caribbean Cultural Center at the University of the Virgin Islands (VICCC@UVI) continues to collaboratively organize, facilitate and educate our communities on Culture, Heritage and Education (CHE) on historical narratives worthy of inclusion in commemorations, carnivals, celebrations, festivals and observances. Recognition and appreciation extended to founder and president of the Institute of Caribbean Studies, Dr. Claire Nelson, instrumental to the campaign for NCAHM designations in June annually via Congressional Act.

“Bamboula as presented, ritualized and performed is reflective of the international and Caribbean crossroad of communication, cultural heritage, healing sciences, traditional folklore and linguistic shifts within Crucian (Virgin Islands Caribbean) culture that have influenced and been influenced by the social milieu of St. Croix, the Eastern Caribbean isle nations and AfRaKa. Bamboula as a sacred art and traditional form of communication amongst AfRaKan and Indigenous people’s culture has remained misunderstood for centuries. It has been associated with dance and musical rhythms used by free and enslaved AfRaKans in St. Croix and abroad for communications for uprisings, initiations, celebrations and secret society gatherings. In many instances, the term used to describe a sacred meeting place for spiritual activities among freedom fighters is referred to as a Bamboula as was the case before the VI Emancipation movement of the people especially on St. Croix on July 2nd, 1848.” (DavisKahina:2009)

In the Virgin Islands of the United States (VIUS), the observances of VI Freedom Week “in accordance with SECTION 1. Title 1 Virgin Islands Code, Chapter 1, is amended by adding section 197a that reads as follows: §197a. Virgin Islands Freedom Week. The dates of June 26th through July 3rd of each year shall he observed as ‘Freedom Week’ in the Virgin Islands to commemorate the emancipation of the enslaved persons in the Danish West Indies, now the Virgin Islands of the United States, and any other freedom struggles of oppressed people that are ideologically consistent therewith. Public ceremonies and programs recognizing and honoring Virgin Islands heroes shall be held throughout the Territory…” (VI Code) VICCC@UVI embraces June as a time of commemorative and celebratory events leading up to VI Freedom Week that complement earlier celebrations for graduates from schools, colleges, universities and more alongside Below: Chenzira Davis Kahina, St. Croix Island Center. Cristian Simescu Right: VI Emancipation Day, St. Croix, 2003.

As the wider Caribbean prepares for massive celebrations for Emancipation Day (August 1st in former British/UK colonies), annual VI Emancipation Day observances on July 3rd are marginal in comparison to US Independence Day on July 4th which is another theme worthy of research, study, reflection and corrective transformation in the immediate future. Embrace Crucian Legacies and do your part to #KeepCrucianVICaribbeanCultureAlive. See associated events for June and July in the Events Calendar. Spa, meaning fountain and derived from the name of the town of Spa in Belgium, is a popular destination all over the world and St. Croix is no exception. Let’s dive into some of the specialty treatments that you can take advantage of right here on island. Deep Tissue Massage Therapy is beneficial in releasing chronic muscle tension and reducing stress hormone levels and heart rate while boosting mood and relaxation and improving posture. This type of massage reaches the deepest layer of muscles and tendons, breaking down tense areas that may cause pain and inflammation, limiting motion of the muscles and joints. Aromatherapy uses natural oils extracted from flowers and plants to enhance psychological and physical well-being. Benefits include its ability to reduce anxiety, ease depression, boost energy levels, speed up the healing process, eliminate headaches, boost cognitive performance, induce sleep, strengthen the immune system, reduce pain, improve digestion and increase circulation. Reflexology uses pressure to the feet and hands with thumb, finger, and hand techniques and without the use of oil or lotion, to help organs and glands via the body’s energetic pathways. In use for thousands of years, benefits include stimulating nerve function, increasing energy, boosting circulation, inducing a deep relaxation, and eliminating toxins from the body. Body Wraps are a pampering experience to improve the texture and appearance of the skin by helping to rid the body of excess fluids and toxins. Benefits include detoxification, boosting of the lymphatic system and metabolism, body contouring, skin tightening and softening, and balance depending on the type of wrap chosen—aroma, seaweed, sea salt, and others. Facials are a skin care treatment for the face using steam, exfoliation, extraction, creams, lotions, facial masks, peels, and massage. They deeply cleanse and help fight certain skin problems, such as mild acne or dryness. Treatments leave faces glowing and are typically very relaxing, as they include a massage component. A sauna is a room designed as a place to experience dry or wet heat sessions andhas a strong impact on your health and well-being. The heat relieves stress, relaxes muscles, soothes aches and pains, cleanses the skin, induces a deeper sleep, improves cardiovascular performance, burns calories, and helps fight illness by boosting the immune system; emerge relaxed and revived! w w w.stcroix thisweek.com

Moving FAQs by Amy Land-de Wilde We field questions every day from stateside folks wondering what it’s like to live on St. Croix and how to make the move. There are big questions like, “Do we need a passport to travel back and forth?” – No you don’t...you can come with your driver’s license, to “Is it possible to get my hair done there?”—Yes!! We have so many talented stylists, colorists and haircutters! One woman told me that she had actually stopped coloring her hair in preparation to move because she didn’t think she’d be able to do that here! Here are some other questions we get frequently. “Should I ship my furniture from the states”? No… Many people say that after they’ve done that they are sorry because what worked in their home up North does not work here. We have wonderful furniture stores and decorators and, in addition, most of our properties are sold furnished so you can take your time making it your own. We even have a Home Depot for those do-it-yourselfers and other local hardware stores too! “Should I ship my car”? If you have a car you love that’s easy to work on and is durable, by all means ship it! Although you don’t need a four-wheel- drive, you will want to explore and many beautiful sites are up unpaved roads. We also have many dealerships here and used cars are sold both commercially and privately, so you can purchase a car when you get here. “What about our pets”? Bring them! We love our furry friends on St. Croix. We have a number of good vets and there is no quarantining but you must get a certificate of good health from your pet’s vet, however. A number of condos are pet-free, but dogs and cats are no problem in all residential neighborhoods here. We also have volunteer organizations that need your help and a very robust shelter pet program getting them to loving homes here and on the mainland. More questions? Get in touch! We have answers for you and will help make your move as seamless as possible!

ace North and look for seven fairly bright stars which form a dipper or a cooking pot -- three stars mark the handle and four more the bowl. Some people know that if you draw a line through the two stars at the end of the bowl and extend the line away from the bowl, you come to the North Star. Now, remember, the North Star is NOT the brightest star in the sky. In fact, it really isn’t bright at all. It happens to be at a point in the heavens almost directly over the North Pole of the Earth. So having found the North Star, if you did not know which way was North, you would now know. But, go back to the Big Dipper. Draw the line through the same two stars at the end of the bowl, but in the opposite direction. You will come to the bright star Regulus, the heart of Leo, the Lion. Leo is made of a backwards question mark, with Regulus as the dot at the base of the question mark, which form the lion’s head and the front part of its body and a small triangle of faint stars which form his hind quarters and tail. This month the planet Mars can be seen against the background of stars of Leo, look for a bright red star-like object. Go back to the Big Dipper once more. This time use the Dipper’s handle. Follow the arc of the handle away from the Dipper to the bright star Arcturus and then speed on to Spica. Arcturus is the brightest star in Boötes, the Herdsman. Spica is a grain of wheat being held in the hand of Virgo, the Goddess of the Harvest.

Page 64 • June / July 2019

SOUTH

CONSTELLATIONS: UPPER CASE • Stars: Lower Case

On June 10th Jupiter will be at Opposition (opposite the Sun as seen from Earth). Jupiter will be at its closest approach to Earth, brighter than any other time of the year, and will be visible all night long. In July Jupiter will be high in the southern sky once the sky grows dark. Jupiter can be found just east of the bright red star Antares, the heart of Scorpius, the Scorpion. Once you have found Antares, look for fainter stars that form the Scorpion’s long, curved tail. The seven bright stars of Orion dominate a winter’s night. But, there is a connection to the stars of summer. According to legend Orion was such a mighty hunter that he boasted that he could defeat any animal on Earth in battle. Suddenly a scorpion appeared, stung Orion on the foot and Orion died. However, Orion was such a great hunter that he was given immortality and placed in the heavens. The scorpion was also placed in the night sky, but you never seen Orion and the scorpion at the same time. On June 21st the Sun will have reached its northern most position in the sky, directly over the Tropic of Cancer. This is the first day of Summer in the Northern Hemisphere and the first day of Winter in the Southern Hemisphere. Mercury is at Greatest Eastern Elongation on June 23rd. (As seen from above and with Earth as the reference point, Mercury is east of the Sun.) This is the best time to view Mercury since it will be at its highest point above the horizon. Look for Mercury low in the western sky just after sunset.

In June, Saturn will rise in the east at about 9:00 p.m. Saturn is at Opposition on July 9th. Saturn will be at its closest approach to Earth, brighter than any other time of the year, and will be visible all night long. Saturn is seen against the background of stars of Sagittarius. Sagittarius is a centaur, a creature that is half man and half horse. Sagittarius is a friend of Orion and he is firing an arrow at the Scorpion. You will probably have a great deal of trouble trying to see Sagittarius. Some people use the brightest stars of Sagittarius to form a teapot. Perhaps you can see the handle, the top of the pot and the spout. And, it’s pouring hot tea all over the Scorpion! On July 4th the Earth will be at aphelion, its farthest distance from the Sun for the year. The distance from the Sun’s center to Earth’s center will be 94,513,221 miles (152,104,285 km). Now it might seem that if the Earth is at its farthest distance from the Sun that might explain winter; but, of course, it is only winter in the southern hemisphere, it is summer in the northern hemisphere. How close or far we are from the Sun is not what causes the seasons. The night of July 28th-29th is the maximum of the Delta Aquarid Meteor Shower. The Delta Aquarids is an average shower that can produce up to 20 meteors (shooting stars) per hour at its peak. The best time to look will be between midnight and dawn from a good dark location. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Aquarius, but can appear anywhere in the sky. w w w.stcroix thisweek.com
