Tel: (340) 772-1000 Fax: (340) 772-0333 Welcome to our beautiful Virgin Islands of the United States. Our islands are unique in what they each offer and our communities are filled with people who are proud of our storied history. While visiting, I encourage you to immerse yourself in our culture and to explore the unique offerings of all four Islands that make up our paradise.

St. Croix, the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, sits to the south of our small island chain and is renowned for its pastoral landscapes, Danish architecture and historical landmarks. With its offshore wrecks and unbelievably beautiful underwater reefs, St. Croix is also a popular destination for diving enthusiasts. Be sure to visit the historic towns of Frederiksted and Christiansted and indulge in St. Croix’s renowned art and delicious culinary scenes. St. John is one of the smaller U.S. Virgin Islands and conservation center of the territory. It is best known for its pristine beaches and the attractions within the Virgin Islands National Park, which occupies more than half the island. The lands in the Virgin Islands National Park shelter migrant birds and the mangroves support corals and anemones. As with all the Virgin islands, you will find that St. John provides a rich mix of our culture and history. St. Thomas is our business and shopping center and the seat of government. Charlotte Amalie is the capital town of the U.S. Virgin Islands and is one of the busiest ports of call for cruise ships in the Caribbean. St. Thomas is among the most popular destinations in the Caribbean for sailing and yachting enthusiasts. Water Island is the smallest of the U.S. Virgin Islands and rests just off the coast of St. Thomas. It is mostly residential but offers fun attractions like Honeymoon Beach and quaint accommodations. The island can be reached by ferry from the Crown Bay Marina or by other vessels. As the Lieutenant Governor and Governor, both Treganza Roach and I wish you a warm, fun-filled stay and please accept our invitation to return often to our paradise. Albert Bryan, Jr. Governor

MUTINY Island Vodka Launches Sion Farm Distillery Opens

he first vodka produced on St. Croix from breadfruit is revolutionizing the vodka category and is set to shake up the cocktail culture with its natural citrus, melon and green banana flavor notes! It is also the world’s first and only vodka distilled and bottled on St. Croix at the newly-opened Sion Farm Distillery, the previous home of the nostalgic Island Dairies dating back to 1950. Award-winning chef, Todd Manley, originally from Virginia where he was chef/owner of multiple restaurants, owns four popular restaurants on St. Croix—40 Strand Eatery, The Mill Boardwalk Bar & Brick Oven Pizza, Rum And Wine Bar Seafood & Restaurant, and TOAST Diner.

Dear Visitor, Welcome to St. Croix, a land of spectacular beauty, rich cultural diversity and intriguing history. The largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, with 84 square miles of rolling hillsides, pristine beaches and a tropical rainforest, St. Croix offers endless opportunities to pursue your heart’s desire and create a unique vacation experience. Adventurers and nature lovers can spend time hiking, kayaking, horseback riding, sailing or golfing at one of our championship golf courses. Scuba diving enthusiasts can experience five different dives in one day. For a more relaxed approach, swim in the crystalline waters of Buck Island, the only naturally occurring underwater National Monument in the U.S. History buffs can experience St. Croix’s vibrant history through its architecture, historic landmarks, food, music and traditions. Explore the magnificent Estate Whim Museum, a restored 18th century greathouse and sugar plantation, Forts Christiansvaern and Frederik or tour the lush gardens of the St. George Village Botanical Garden. Early risers can catch a picturesque sunrise at Point Udall, the easternmost point in the United States. Christiansted and Frederiksted, our main seaside towns, are a shopper’s nirvana with charming boutiques offering everything from handcrafted jewelry and apparel to colorful local art. Visitors enjoy a generous $1,600 duty-free shopping allowance. Our chic hotels, resorts and cozy bed-and-breakfast inns will pamper you with warm hospitality, while our world-class restaurants tempt your taste buds with local and international menus. St. Croix’s wide array of the entertainment choices, including fairs, festivals, live concerts and gaming venues ensure that the fun never ends. On behalf of the Department of Tourism, I hope you have an amazing vacation experience in St. Croix. Thank you for choosing the U.S. Virgin Islands. Sincerely,

Joseph Boschulte Commissioner USVI Department of Tourism

He has called the Virgin Islands home since 2010. His passion for the VI and his commitment to the finest, most authentic ingredients drove his vision for MUTINY Island Vodka, created in collaboration with gold-medal-winning distiller Chris Richeson. “St. Croix is a magical place where history, culture and incredible people come together to create a rich experience,” said Manley. “This was a way for us to give back to this amazing island and its people.” Hand-crafted MUTINY Island Vodka retains the character of the island breadfruit from which it is distilled. Touted by many as an untapped superfood, it is a versatile tropical fruit known and loved throughout the Caribbean and “it provided us with a type of vodka we knew would be true to the island,” said Manley. “A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Trees That Feed Foundation to support their efforts to alleviate hunger in tropical countries,” said Manley. Grateful, Mary McLaughlin, TTFF chair and founder, “welcomes their support of our efforts to build self-sustaining communities and entrepreneurs based on agroforestry.” With the creation of MUTINY Island Vodka and the opening of Sion Farm Distillery, Manley is “committed to supporting the growth of St. Croix, and all of the USVI, by way of employment, agriculture, environmental initiatives and the vibrant tourist trade of the islands,” he says. The name was inspired by the famous tale of the mutiny on the Royal Navy vessel HMS Bounty in 1789, known to most as “The Mutiny on The Bounty.”

Quite possibly one of the oldest gift shops on St. Croix, they opened 44 years ago in 1975. The Abdallah family, originally from Jerusalem, has owned it all these years, first at Sunny Isle and now on Company Street. Not to be caught without something you need, this shop has it all from gold and silver jewelry (rings, necklaces, earrings, hook bracelets, novelty pins, pendants) plus Larimar and costume jewelry, to ladies and men’s watches (Elgin, Helbros, Activa, Bulova, Casio, Loris) and St. Croix and VI souvenirs like plates, clocks, shot glasses, pot holders, baseball caps, tees, flags and banners. Also check out their magnets, key chains, umbrellas, model ships, knives, and sunglasses. Open Monday – Sat, 9am – 5:30pm. Watch and jewelry repair! Find them next to the Post Office.

August cover “The Windmill” Under Danish rule, St. Croix was a top sugar-producing island. The plantation sugar mills now remind us of an economic boom that never trickled down to the enslaved laborers. Local activists, in agriculture and education, are working like windmills to produce bright Virgin Islanders. As a child, I remember being excited about Christmas tramps and Jouvert! Participants wore silly and satirical costumes but not anymore. During the St. Thomas Carnival this year, my goal was to showcase the dance movements and the characters that people brought to the event. ‘The Captain’ and I locked eyes, as she ran up asking to have her picture taken saying ‘I’m kind of famous.’

“Harlan Coben is a master at taking what seems to be an ordinary family and exposing the facade and secrets that are buried just below the surface. With Run Away, the narrative navigates a twisty mountainous road until the shocking conclusion.”—Associated Press. In Sunset Beach by Mary Kay Andrews, Drue has her life flipped upside down and must start over in a new city, with new friends, and an old beloved house. Her heart grows fond for a young client whose mother was killed and she, despite everyone telling her to leave it alone, wants to solve the case. Don’t just fracture the fairy tale. Shatter it. Jennifer Donnelly’s The Step Sister evokes the original version of the Cinderella story and she uses her trademark wit and wisdom to send an overlooked character on a journey toward empowerment, redemption and, a new definition of beauty. The Guest Book is a novel about past mistakes and betrayals that ripple throughout generations examining a privileged American family and a privileged America. Sarah Blake’s book looks at the racism and power that has been systemically embedded in the U.S. for generations. A resilient young woman must outwit a sadistic psychopath in Cari Mora, a pulse-pounding thriller from the author of The Silence of the Lambs, Thomas Harris, a “master still at the top of his strange and chilling form”—Wall Street Journal.

Cast Iron Pot

Having the opportunity and filling the need for a local, cultural style of preparing meals, Burton Peterson, and his wife Deborah opened Cast Iron Pot, on Northside Road in La Grande Princesse on June 26th, 2015. Born and raised on St. Croix and married 35 years, they got the whole family involved! Because of the way and style of their grandparents cooking and to preserve that tradition, they chose the name, Cast Iron Pot. Offering eat in or take out, the menu glorifies local foods with a modern twist—the Best Sellers being Local Lobster dinners, Pot Fish and Fungi, Conch in Butter Sauce, Salt Fish and Dumpling, Stew Oxtail and Pork Chops. Mouth-watering Coconut Bread Pudding is a favorite for dessert! They still operate Top Class Catering and do a variety of events working with government agencies, Hovensa, Limetree, Caravelle Hotel Casino, WAPA, UVI, St. Croix Friends of Denmark, and many private parties, here at the restaurant or on location, for 2 to 500 people. Burton and Deborah have attended many different catering and restaurant workshops and seminars and have taught cooking and hospitality classes for many years. Hear former clients praise Top Class Catering on their website—“an enormous success, largely due to the exceptional delicacies and service provided by your staff,” “he and his staff did a marvelous job in both food preparation and presentation,” “Burton Peterson definitely runs a top class catering business and I would highly recommend him for his excellence in preparing traditional Crucian fare,” “thank you both personally and professionally for your excellent service! No one could have done it better,” “We have traveled all over the world and have rarely found such delicious native cuisine.” Open Tuesday and Wednesday, 11 am – 4 pm, and Thursday - Saturday, where reservations at Cast Iron Pot are advised, the hours are 11 am to 9 pm. The Artist Is In

MEET STEPHANIE CHALANA BROWN Were you born on St. Croix and where did you live? I was born on St. Croix and spent most of my childhood in Christiansted town. Tell me about your ancestors and how long they have lived on the island. Both my maternal and paternal family members have long legacies from the Christiansted town neighborhoods. My ancestors are some of the first free-colored persons that are documented in Christiansted; the community is called “Hillsiders.” Where did you go to school and what were your favorite subjects? I attended the St. Croix Educational Complex high school as a freshman, but transferred to Central High School to participate in the then auspicious Modern Dance program. Yes, Dance was my favorite subject! Are any family members artistic in any way? My family is very centered around culture. My grandparents on both sides were born before, on, and a little after the 1917 Transfer and they lived Virgin Islands culture through cooking, storytelling, fishing, and community engagement. Did you have an artistic bent in school? I took Dance very seriously. I wasn’t allowed to have very much opinions as a child because my mother always stressed that children should be ‘seen and not heard’ so, I expressed myself a lot through Dance. Who were the teachers who most influenced you? How did they do that? Ms. Lisa Lenhardt, a talented and prolific dancer from the Virgin Islands, influenced me the most. I knew HER as a child, when I began my dance training. Lisa incorporates technical and Afro-Caribbean dance styles together, the combination intrigued me What did your parents teach you? My parents were really devoted to being professionals. My mom worked at the telephone company for close to 30 years and my dad is a respected retired detective in the police department for over 40 years. Why did you choose Communications, Dance and Theater to study at college? I really wanted to go to film school, but it was sort of unheard of at the time I was graduating. I don’t think I got enough guidance to make that happen, so I just chose a 36 • August / September 2019

Left: “Rhythm of the Beat.” Above: “Visiting Smiles.”

degree that was closely aligned to Film. I am now a journalist. Why Bennett College for Women? I never travelled much out of the Caribbean when I was younger. I got accepted to larger institutions, but I felt overwhelmed with the big campuses. So, I chose a smaller institution. Tell me about your teaching experience with the Dept. of Education in Dancing and English languages. My former high school dance teacher decided to retire and she reached out to me to see if I was interested in taking over her dance program. I was elated. The first year was extremely hard. Unlike the years that I was a student in the dance program, many of the students were not interested in technical training and had a fear of performing. It took a long time to get some of my revolving students on stage and prepared. 2012 was the worst year for me. The Virgin Islands budget was scaled back and many teachers and government employees received the 8% cut. The dance program was cut all together. How did the change from teaching to the broadcast industry change your life? After being unemployed for a while and having another teaching opportunity fall

through, I bought a camera with my last paycheck and began taking photographs as a form of stress relief. I got pretty good and people started paying me. Then I began providing media coverage Privately for nonprofits and gained a rapport with a local news station, TV2, that hired me and is still my current employer. They have given me a great platform and the opportunity to produce several television programs including “Griot” and “Foodie Insider” that have become big hits in the community and continue to be well-received. When did you have the insight to see yourself as a visual artist photographing women? I enjoy photographing women because the matriarchs in my family are who kept both sides of my family together. I could be slightly bias because I am a woman, but I see women as the propellers of families and community engagement in the Virgin Islands. I always saw myself as a photographer but while working on a television production featuring VI Artist LaVaugh Belle, I learned that I can use the medium of photography to make art—a great discovery for me! Where can we see your work on island? Some of my works from the collection, “The Madras That Binds All Ahwe,” inspired by the poem by Richard Schrader, Sr., is at Art @ Top Hat. I also had a piece in the St. Croix Pride Art Show at the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts in May. Stephanie Chalana Brown stephaniebrownvi@icloud.com 340-244-1768

Denmark & St. Croix—Daylight Seasonal Discrepancies

Our Danish Connection VELKOMMEN!

Dahlias at Humlemagasinet -a museum botanical garden community center on the island of Funen

by Nina York There is a marked contrast between winter and summer daylight hours between northerly Denmark and here, where their shortest daylight period is a mere 6 hours in late December, bringing with it a longing for warm, sunny weather in tropical areas like ours. But as summer approaches, the situation is reversed, with daylight hours rising to around 18, yet seldom approaching the tropics in temperature. Here in St. Croix, the contrast between seasonal daylight duration is far less; due to our southern location, the shortest day has over 10 hours, and the temperature difference between winter and summer not significant. Remarkably, at spring and fall solstice March 21 and September 21, both our locations share the same equal day and night length. How does this great contrast between winter and summer affect lifestyles? During the long, dark and chilly winter months, most Danes seek indoor activities, such as sharing a meal with family and friends at a candlelit table, enjoying this hygge experience of coziness that Denmark exemplifies. But it also is a time when escape to warmer, sunnier locations is high on the Danish calendar, and our islands are among the popular spots for a vacation that in addition to sea and sun offer a relevant history. Danes happen to enjoy an annual six-week vacation from work. Conversely, in the islands with minor temperature changes between summer and winter, preferred getaways for residents over a limited vacation period are in the spring and fall, and often to cities or exotic locations. The Danish summer is brief, and sometimes disappointing, maybe bringing rain and relatively low temperatures. But every ray of sunshine is appreciated. The Danish enthusiasm felt in the early spring to view the first blooms, signaling that warmer and brighter days are on their way, is pervasive. Our summer here is close to perennial, with no chance of ever needing heating beyond what nature offers. Is this condition monotonous and boring? Hardly, not only because our plant life has its own seasons, allowing each time of year to feature its displays, fruit from trees and bushes, and spectacular occasional displays such as the rare blooming of the silk-cotton (kapok) tree and the red summer coat of the flamboyant tree. Of course, occasional heavy winds can play tricks on our foliage, but the revival rate is impressive, and can even result in the bonus of an unexpected blooming and fruit of trees beyond their normal season. We are lucky to enjoy so many days of outdoor enjoyment here. Many Danes may only have a few times a year to enjoy an outdoor dinner with friends even at the height of summer. Our lifestyle is anchored in the outdoors. Obviously, weather is on everyone’s minds; we hope good, warm weather will bring joy to our visitors. Nina York, born in Denmark but a St. Croix resident since 1976, has been a contributor for this publication since 2009 and was its Managing Editor from 1990 – 2003. She now offers tours for visitors from Denmark and the mainland, does translations, and volunteers for Rotary and the Friends of Denmark Society.

(340) 776-0656. August / September 2019 • 39

Teroro II, a 42’ trimaran, is the first commercially built boat by Gold Coast Yachts at Salt River and chartered by Captain Heinz. Carl followed his father’s passion, after sailing and competing in his youth and after helping to captain Teroro II to Buck Island for 16 years, and now has is own boat Dragonfly, a 38’ trimaran. He and his father love to share their local knowledge with the guests aboard and give them a very personalized snorkeling tour of Buck Island Reef. We are recommended by Fromer’s Tour Guide and sail from Green Cay Marina.

Sea Thru Kayaks VI —The Difference Is Clear! For the past decade, visitors and locals alike have continued to experience the incredible bioluminescent bay of St. Croix by utilizing the completely transparent “sea thru” kayak tour; the only way to become fully immersed in the bioluminescent wonder, operated by Sea Thru Kayaks VI LLC.

used for windscreens of jet aircraft and the construction of bullet proof glass. By constructing the entire kayak hull of this clear material, guest are able to have a completely unobstructed view of the waters below and around them. Ryan is a tireless adventurer with a passion for the environment. “It does not matter how many times that I am lucky enough to experience the St. Croix bio bay, I still catch myself in awe as the dark waters turn to light beneath my paddles night after night. It is such a privilege to be able to share this amazing natural beauty with guest from around the world.”

Sea Thru Kayaks VI has been locally owned and operated for the last decade, and owner/ operator Ryan Wadkins looks forward to continuing the successful business operation for years to come. Our island is an incredible place, with truly unmatched natural beauty. The flora and fauna are vast and unique, but it is the incredible bioluminescent bay that is the literal light of STX. As the completely transparent kayaks skim over the waters of the bio bay, billions of microscopic marine plankton illuminate in the waters below, creating a glowing effect that immerses the entirely clear kayak hull. Countless guest and visitors agree that there is no way to truly describe the phenomenon that

can be experienced in a sea-thru kayak, and that words cannot give justice to the beauty that is witnessed. Although there is one message that is clearly conveyed by countless guest, that seathru kayaks are the only way to fully experience the bioluminescence wonder. The unique sea thru kayaks are a monohulled construction, created from a single sheet of transparent polycarbonate. This is the same material

Come visit the bioluminescent wonder at Salt River Bay, one of the only handful of year-round bioluminescent bays in the world, and see for yourself what makes this part of STX so special. At the Salt River bio bay, you will truly see St. Croix in a different light. Visit our website for more information and to schedule your tour today. The difference is CLEAR! Sea-Thru Kayaks VI, LLC

DIVE EXPERIENCE — Diving St. Croix for 37 Years Michelle Pugh, a 41-year resident of St Croix, learned to dive in Los Angeles while high school and hasn’t stopped since! In 1992, along with Jacques Cousteau, she was inducted into the platinum Pro 5000 through SSI. In 2004, she was inducted into the Women Divers Hall of Frame for being the first woman to dive with killer whales in the wilds of Canada, the first American woman to teach diving in Moscow, Russia and for establishing the mooring system on St Croix to protect the coral reefs. Michelle was also given the SBDC and Congressional Award for Entrepreneurial Success for Dive Experience. the dive mooring sites, she has explored most St Croix reefs and walls. Michelle has also traveled the world just to dive—like the East coast of the US from Florida to Rhode Island, the West coast from Canada to Mexico, The Red Sea, Australia, Solomon Islands, Borneo, PhilipSusan Wall pines, the Antarctic, and most of the Caribbean Islands. And, I recently returned from the Galapagos Islands! Dive Experience is St Croix’s first dive operator and the first PADI 5-star IDC center. They teach diving from novice to professional instructors. Another year, another hurricane season! Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. Climate researchers are predicting a ‘near normal’ cycle of storms this year with 9-15 named storms, 4-8 hurricanes, and 2-4 major hurricanes. Are you ready? As Virgin Islanders know all too well, it only takes one storm to do tremendous damage. The Virgin Islands Territorial Emergency Management Agency (VITEMA) has lots of great resources to inform and enable our community in hurricane preparation. Visit www.vitema.vi.gov/plan-prepare/hurricanes and sign up for Alert VI to receive emergency alerts to your landline, cell phone, or email! To prepare yourself, your family and your property for hurricane season, it’s best to plan for two types of emergency responses—timely evacuation and remaining in your home. • Plan an evacuation route. Evacuation decisions should be made based on storm surge conditions, not wind conditions. • Keep at least a three-day supply of food and water. Stow one gallon of water per day per person and food that won’t spoil. • Prepare a kit to include a manual can opener, fire extinguisher, battery-operated radio, flashlight, batteries, and cash. • Keep an accessible stash of blankets, pillows, clothing, toiletries, and pet care. • Store important documents in a fire and waterproof container like medical records, birth certificates, social security cards, wills, insurance papers, bank details, mortgages, etc. Bolster your property’s hurricane resistance. • Inspect the vegetation and foliage surrounding your home; remove overhanging or dead tree limbs. • Keep your gutters clean and clear to allow heavy water flow. • In the event of a storm, pick up or secure things outside that can blow around (chairs, tables, tools, etc.). • If you have a boat, invest in new lines! In anticipation of serious weather, double up on your lines and lay a second anchor to better secure your vessel. Don’t underestimate the power of a good plan. Stay informed, alert, and prepared! St. Croix from Buck Island.

DRIVE SAFE— STAY LEFT Whether renting a car or crossing the street, it is vital to remember that traffic in the USVI flows from the left side of the road. St. Croix is 28 miles in length and 7 miles at the widest point with two major towns— Christiansted at the center on the north shore and Frederiksted at the west end. The Caribbean Sea which surrounds the island is always there to guide you along the roads that wind around the coast. Car rental agencies have a variety of vehicles available from sporty jeeps to roomy air-conditioned sedans, vans, and SUVs. The average price usually includes unlimited mileage but you fill the tank upon return! Both US and other driver’s licenses are recognized. The driver and front seat passenger are required by law to use seat belts and cell phone talking or texting is not allowed. Parking in Christiansted is limited and 2-hour parking on parts of Company and Queen Cross Streets is enforced. Look for the signs. There is daytime parking in the National Park Service lot near Ft. Christiansvaern, until 4:30 pm, and a public lot with fees on Strand and King Cross Street. Major roads are asphalt and usually well maintained. The Melvin H. Evans Highway is the only 4-lane, divided highway running from mid-island west to within 1 mile of Frederiksted. The speed limit is 55. In other areas, the 35 mph limit applies; in town, 20 mph unless otherwise posted. Let our Attractions & Tours pages (7-9) and our St. Croix Road Map (54 & 55) and town maps (56-58) help you plan your island tour!

Rejsemål St. Croix Godt at Vide!

Island Worship The history of our island is mirrored in its old church structures, many of which have recently been restored. The Moravian brethren, arriving here in the 1730s from Saxony in today’s Germany, founded their mission to bring Christianity to the enslaved part of the population. The historic Anglican (Episcopalian) churches built in Gothic style include St. John’s in Christiansted and, in Frederiksted, the beautifully restored St. Paul’s church. The large number of Irish settlers, along with Englishmen and Hispanics, have contributed to the presence of the Catholic church; Holy Cross in Christiansted is the oldest in the Virgin Islands. The Danish rule of the island from 1733 to 1917 brought the Lutheran church, which still plays a large role here. Lord God of Sabaoth in Christiansted occupies the former Dutch Reformed Church; Holy Trinity in Frederiksted was built shortly after the town was founded. The Dutch Reformed church (Presbyterian) now has a new mid-island home. These are just a few of the many (over 150) churches on St. Croix, from Seventh-Day Adventist to Methodist, Baptist, Church of God, and many more. Church attendance and activities are important to a large part of our population; visitors are always welcome at services, often a high point in their island experience. Many other faiths offer places of worship—a Jewish synagogue, a Hindu temple, and a Moslem mosque, to name a few. An easy-tofollow guide is actually the yellow pages of our local phone book beginning on Page 54.

Befolkningen. Virgin Islands befolkning er venlig men tilbageholdende. Man hilser gerne med “Good morning”, “Good Afternoon” og “Good Night.” Tider. Her som alle vegne, vær forsigtig. Lås bilen, gå ikke med værdifulde smykker i byen, og hold dig til de befolkede områder.

Butler Bay – A dive that can reached from the beach. Shallow water shelf just bursting with marine life. A great place to see juvenile tropicals to lobster and Nurse Sharks under the ledges. Out in deeper water you will find the area for wreck.

CHRISTIANSTED WALKING TOUR Let’s start a leisurely walking tour of CHRISTIANSTED at the site of the Old Scale House 1 on the harborfront, known as the Wharf. One section of the 1856 structure displays the scale used in former days to weigh barrels of rum and sugar. The other section holds a bookstore and gift shop as well as an information center about all things St. Croix. This is one of a complex of five buildings comprising the Christiansted National Historic Site, established in 1952, administered by the National Park Service.

Originally, Government House 6 on King Street, was built as a home for a Danish merchant. That section dates from 1749; another section, the previous town house of a wealthy Danish plantation owner, was joined to it in 1826, together becoming the seat of the Danish West Indies government. The grand staircase and portico were added in 1830, as was the impressive ballroom/reception hall on the second floor by Governor General Peter von Scholten, who had his office and official residence here. The former are open to the public (entrance at mid-building on King Street). The Lutheran Church 7 across Queen Cross Street on King Street, was originally the Dutch Reformed Church, built in the 1740’s and transferred to the Lutherans in 1831, who brought the furnishings here from the Steeple Building. Later, the steeple was added. Walking up Queen Cross Street to Company Street takes you to Apothecary Hall 8 on the left corner, which holds both the tiny Apothecary Museum on Queen Cross Street, open anytime, and in the courtyard the Archaeological Museum, open only Saturdays 10 am-2 pm. Nearby on Company Street is the Old Market 9 , laid out in the original town plan from 1735, and still being used. The well dates from 1863. On this square you will also find the downtown Post Office.

Christiansted National Historic Site Established in 1952, Christiansted National Historic Site was the first unit of the National Park Saystem in the US Virgin Islands. The park’s historic buidings and grounds commemorate the Danish heritage (1733-1917) of the town of Christiansted, St. Croix, which was named in honor of the reigning King of Denmark and Norway, Christian VI. In the 1700s, Christiansted was part of a mercantile system that linked Europe,West Africa, and the Caribbean in the infamous “Triangular Trade.” Christiansted was the first town in the Lesser Antilles to be built on the grid system and to have a building code. Its distinctive colonial architecture reflects the town’s status as capital of the Danish West Indies (1755-1871); the great wealth generated by the export of cane sugar, molasses, and rum; and the influence of government building inspectors. Governor General Peter von Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the enslaved population in the Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848, from adjacent Buddhoe Park 2. The park contains a bronze bust of the renowned slave rebellion leader. The Oscar E. Henry Customs House 3 was built in the 1800s. The Freedom Fountain 4, facing the pier, was installed for the Emancipation 150th Anniversary Celebration. After severe damage during a labor insurrection in 1878, the town was rebuilt in Victorian style. Victoria House 5, on Strand Street, and Apothecary Hall 6, 63 on King Cross Street between King and Queen Streets, preserve the Frederksted architecture of that time. Both received storm damage in September. The Visitor’s Bureau 7, is located upstairs on Strand Street above the Frederiksted Mall and next door to the historic light blue building housing the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts 8. Frederiksted is home to a number of historic churches, including St. Paul’s Episcopal Church 9, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church 10, Friedensberg Moravian Church 11, and St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church 12. The newly restored Old Danish School 13, on Hospital Street and Market Street, is a handsome building. At Strand and Queen Cross Streets is the Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library 14, built in 1803. The Market Place 15, is still in use today, as it was in 1751 at the founding of Frederiksted.

Project Promise’s

SERVICE TRIP Across America In January 2016 Project Promise, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of at-risk youth on St. Croix, launched its groundbreaking Caterpillar Project. This comprehensive program offers eight years of holistic support services—including life coaching, mentoring, academic intervention, career exploration, personal Founder & President wellness, creative expression, Resa O’Reilly cultural awareness, community service and family support services—to a small pilot group of youths, referred to as the “Caterpillars.” “We started this project three and a half years ago,” explains Resa O’Reilly, Project Promise’s energetic founder and president, “when our Caterpillars were just in fifth grade. Now, they are about to graduate from eighth grade. I always knew when they graduated from eighth grade, I’d start traveling with them so they could experience the world. That’s why this summer we’re going on a mind-expanding 20-day cross-country road trip from New York to California!” The group will include the Caterpillars and four adults. Plans call for the group to visit New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and California. They’ll see big cities and rural areas, visit museums, historic sites, college campuses and much more. And they’ll get a first-hand understanding of the vastness and diversity of America. However, this is not just a sight-seeing trip. The trip is meant to be fun, educational, and meaningful to the participants and the people they impact. In keeping with Project Promise’s emphasis on community service, the group will be completing service projects in many of the places at which they stop. This will also give them an opportunity to work alongside some of the organizations they have had connections with over the past few

years. “We will be partnering with old friends and making new ones along the way,” states Resa. The many service projects planned for this cross-country road trip include volunteering at Harlem Grown, an urban farm in New York; painting a mural in Ohio as part of a community beautification project; and much more. A major focus of the Caterpillar Project is community service. “The community service component is one of my favorite components because it provides an opportunity for our Caterpillars to give of themselves to help others. It teaches them that, despite whatever challenges they are facing in their lives, they can still positively impact the lives of others,” Resa stated. Fundraising for the service trip began in earnest in September 2018. From making and selling beaded bracelets to water sales, bake sales, to gift wrapping, sponsorships and much more. The group has been very busy trying to achieve their fundraising goals and is truly grateful for the community’s support in making this trip possible. “This will be the trip of a lifetime for our Caterpillars,” Resa shares. “I can’t wait to see The Caterpillars how the experiBack: J’Neelah Daniel, Jahmani Kinaya Davis, Middle: Vianca ence expands their Graham, Medina, Resa O’Reilly, Ricardo Caleb, Layla O’Reilly, Front: Zeeken Mark horizons!” Project Promise 10 ABC Queen Street, Christiansted 340-513-0446 www.projectpromisevi.com August / September 2019 • 59

Originally from Jamaica, Ramone Reid is the founder and CEO of Cultured Naturals Body Care, formulating and manufacturing Face, Hair, Body and Home Scent products, using locally-sourced ingredients, for the past five years. All products are plant based, featuring botanicals and essential oils gentle and functional enough for the entire family. There’s a baby line, featuring the faces of Ramone’s daughters Juliett and Gracie, with a Men’s line and Makeup line coming soon. A hummingbird, called the Jamaican Doctor Bird, is part of the company logo and on all packaging—a symbol of healing love, positive energy, and homage to Jamaica. Ramone grew up working side by side with her Grandmother Zoe Adeana Cooks, a nurse for 40 years, a healer and Jamaican Maroon. With a wealth of information about natural remedies, Ramone learned about natural alternatives and their effectiveness. Fruit trees, vegetables, and herbs were abundant on her grandparent’s property and all were put to good use for eating and medicinal purposes, and remedies were passed down through the generations to Ramone creating the Cultured Naturals Body Care’s slogan, “Marrying Nature with Science.” Ramone started her business in her kitchen but it has evolved from 6 to 60 products that are sold in stores island wide, off island, online, and in her store in Christiansted. The business has gained momentum and brand recognition evident by a recent feature on www.Travel Noire. com, a platform for travelers looking for “the most amazing individuals from the African diaspora, who reside all over the globe!” Ramone received a full scholarship to the University of Havana to Study Medicine. She left with a diploma in Spanish Language and continued her studies in Jamaica earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and becoming a Registered Nurse. After a few years, with grad studies at Nova Southeastern University, Nassau, and Fort Lauderdale, she received her MBA. Service and community were always taught to be of great importance, and that has been Ramone’s focus to present day. She strives to create opportunities, foster collaborations, offer mentorship, and support for the local economy. T

hree bright stars dominate the sky in August and September. The western most of these is Vega, in Lyra, the Harp. In mythology this is the harp invented by Hermes, which Mercury gave to Orpheus, the musician who joins Jason and the Argonauts. On another occasion Orpheus took his into the infernal regions and charmed Pluto, king of Hades, with the music of his harp to win back his lost bride Eurydice. South of Vega is Altair, in Aquila, the Eagle. The eagle was the bird of Zeus and is often represented carrying aloft the young boy Ganymede. Aquila was also known as the bird of Jove and the bearer of his thunder. Whatever the legend, it is impossible to take the fainter stars that join with Altair and really make an Eagle out of this part of the heavens. The third star of the triangle is Deneb, the tail of Cygnus the Swan. There are many legends that might account for the presence of a Swan in the heavens. One myth states that the Swan represents Orpheus, who was slain by Bacchus. However Orpheus’ music was so wonderful that he was changed into a Swan and placed in the heavens near his beloved harp. Cygnus is flying south along a hazy band of light. This is the Milky Way, our city of stars in the universe. Galileo was the first person to point a telescope at the Milky Way (by the way, he did not invent the telescope). When he looked through his telescope he discovered that the band of light was really an uncountable number of stars. Today we know that the band you see is light from millions and millions of stars so far away that you cannot see them as individual stars, just as a hazy band of light. Jupiter and Saturn can be found high in the southwestern sky. Jupiter is seen just east of the bright red star Antares,

the heart of Scorpius, the Scorpion. Once you have found Antares, look for fainter stars that form the Scorpion’s long, curved tail. Unlike most constellations, the stars that form the Scorpion’s tail at least look a curved tail. Jupiter will set around 10:30 p.m. The dimmer Saturn is east of the bright Jupiter and Antares. Saturn is seen against the background of stars of Sagittarius. Sagittarius is a centaur, a creature that is half man and half horse. Sagittarius is a friend of Orion and he is firing an arrow at the Scorpion. You will probably have a great deal of trouble trying to see Sagittarius. Some people use the brightest stars of Sagittarius to form a teapot. Perhaps you can see the handle, the top of the pot and the spout. And, it’s pouring hot tea all over the Scorpion! Saturn sets at about 12:30 a.m. Between Sagittarius and Scorpius you can again find the Milky Way. When you look at the Milky Way in the direction of Sagittarius, you are looking toward the center of our galaxy. Sagittarius is one of the twelve constellations that form the zodiac. It is to the zodiac that you must look to see the planets. Eastward along the zodiac from Sagittarius is Capricornus, the Seagoat. What, you can’t find some faint stars that form a creature half fish and half goat? Again, the stars that form most of the constellations look nothing like the figures. Following Capricornus is Aquarius, more faint stars so don’t bother looking for a man pouring water from a jar. Look for Jupiter and you will have found Aquarius. Eastward from Aquarius and low in the northeastern sky in the early night, are the stars of Pisces, the Fish. You may be able to see one or two circles of faint stars, those are the fish. Between Pisces and Cygnus look for four somewhat bright stars which form a square. These stars mark the body of Pegasus, the Flying

Horse. Fainter stars to the West form the neck and head of the horse and others form the two front legs. This horse has no hind legs or tail. Since this star group is seen when it is Fall in the Northern Hemisphere during and just after the World Series, if we were forming a naming the star groups today this might be the baseball diamond. Each star of the square marks one of the bases; other stars mark the pitcher and catcher and there is even an umpire behind home plate. If we did not have television we might use this group to illustrate stories of past Series. If these stories were told from one generation to the next, one day people might really be looking for a baseball diamond in this part of the heaven. Mercury is at Greatest Western Elongation on August 9th. (As seen from above and with Earth as the reference point, Mercury is west of the Sun.) This is the best time to view Mercury since it will be at its highest point above the horizon. Look for Mercury low in the eastern sky just before sunrise. Perseid Meteor Shower reaches its maximum on the night of August 12th-13th. The Perseids is one of the best meteor showers to view, producing up to 60 meteors (shooting stars) per hour at its peak. Unfortunately, this year the bright light of the nearly Full Moon will block out most of the fainter meteors Best viewing will be from a dark location between midnight and dawn. Meteors will seem to radiate from the constellation Perseus, but can appear anywhere in the sky. The September equinox occurs at 3:50 a.m. The Sun will shine directly over the equator and there will be nearly equal amounts of day and night throughout the world. This is the first day of Fall (Autumnal Equinox) in the Northern Hemisphere and the first day of Spring (Vernal Equinox) in the Southern Hemisphere.
