Tel: (340) 772-1000 Fax: (340) 772-0333 Welcome to our beautiful Virgin Islands of the United States. Our islands are unique in what they each offer and our communities are filled with people who are proud of our storied history. While visiting, I encourage you to immerse yourself in our culture and to explore the unique offerings of all four Islands that make up our paradise.

St. Croix, the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, sits to the south of our small island chain and is renowned for its pastoral landscapes, Danish architecture and historical landmarks. With its offshore wrecks and unbelievably beautiful underwater reefs, St. Croix is also a popular destination for diving enthusiasts. Be sure to visit the historic towns of Frederiksted and Christiansted and indulge in St. Croix’s renowned art and delicious culinary scenes. St. John is one of the smaller U.S. Virgin Islands and conservation center of the territory. It is best known for its pristine beaches and the attractions within the Virgin Islands National Park, which occupies more than half the island. The lands in the Virgin Islands National Park shelter migrant birds and the mangroves support corals and anemones. As with all the Virgin islands, you will find that St. John provides a rich mix of our culture and history. St. Thomas is our business and shopping center and the seat of government. Charlotte Amalie is the capital town of the U.S. Virgin Islands and is one of the busiest ports of call for cruise ships in the Caribbean. St. Thomas is among the most popular destinations in the Caribbean for sailing and yachting enthusiasts. Water Island is the smallest of the U.S. Virgin Islands and rests just off the coast of St. Thomas. It is mostly residential but offers fun attractions like Honeymoon Beach and quaint accommodations. The island can be reached by ferry from the Crown Bay Marina or by other vessels. As the Lieutenant Governor and Governor, both Treganza Roach and I wish you a warm, fun-filled stay and please accept our invitation to return often to our paradise. Albert Bryan, Jr. Governor

Virgin Islands & Puerto Rico

55 Years of Unity, Culture & Friendship

by Domitila Vargas

Dating back to the early 20th century, a wave of Puerto Ricans here began the journey for a better tomorrow. From the beginning, Virgin Islanders welcomed the newcomers and developed an “All A’ We One Family.” But it wasn’t until 1964 that this relationship was cemented by Law 2019 designating the “Virgin Islands/Puerto Rico Friendship Day,” with an event to honor the outstanding contributions of Puerto Ricans to the islands.

Dear Visitor, Welcome to St. Croix, a land of spectacular beauty, rich cultural diversity and intriguing history. The largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, with 84 square miles of rolling hillsides, pristine beaches and a tropical rainforest, St. Croix offers endless opportunities to pursue your heart’s desire and create a unique vacation experience. Adventurers and nature lovers can spend time hiking, kayaking, horseback riding, sailing or golfing at one of our championship golf courses. Scuba diving enthusiasts can experience five different dives in one day. For a more relaxed approach, swim in the crystalline waters of Buck Island, the only naturally occurring underwater National Monument in the U.S. History buffs can experience St. Croix’s vibrant history through its architecture, historic landmarks, food, music and traditions. Explore the magnificent Estate Whim Museum, a restored 18th century greathouse and sugar plantation, Forts Christiansvaern and Frederik or tour the lush gardens of the St. George Village Botanical Garden. Early risers can catch a picturesque sunrise at Point Udall, the easternmost point in the United States. Christiansted and Frederiksted, our main seaside towns, are a shopper’s nirvana with charming boutiques offering everything from handcrafted jewelry and apparel to colorful local art. Visitors enjoy a generous $1,600 duty-free shopping allowance. Our chic hotels, resorts and cozy bed-and-breakfast inns will pamper you with warm hospitality, while our world-class restaurants tempt your taste buds with local and international menus. St. Croix’s wide array of the entertainment choices, including fairs, festivals, live concerts and gaming venues ensure that the fun never ends. On behalf of the Department of Tourism, I hope you have an amazing vacation experience in St. Croix. Thank you for choosing the U.S. Virgin Islands. Sincerely,

Joseph Boschulte Commissioner USVI Department of Tourism

For 55 years now, this celebration has been part of our holidays and, with the passing of time, it has only grown. Today, the entire National Hispanic Heritage Month has become a larger venue to celebrate not only Puerto Ricans, but all Hispanics who so much contribute in all aspects of island life.

Paseo de las Sombrillas, San Juan. Central High students class trip.

The celebrations began with a Church Service on September 21 at the Sunny Isle Amphitheater. Hispanics are deeply religious people and always start their affairs in this manner. Also, part of the traditional events, was the coronation of Miss VI-PR Friendship Queen on September 28, at the Company House Hotel and, this year, a Golf Tournament at the Buccaneer on September 29. Other events, like the Family Fun Day, the ceremony at Government House to honor Puerto Ricans and Crucians, and the Friendship Village, this year honoring Mirza Saldana-Lampe, continue as always. New this year, and in collaboration with AARP of the Virgin Islands, Rafael Ithier and El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico will be on the Caravelle Hotel Casino stage to help kick off the Opening Ceremonies! Recognized as the oldest and most important salsa orchestra in the Latin world, they won a Grammy for Best Tropical Album and were awarded the Billboard Latin Music Lifetime Achievement Award. “For the past nine winters, we have traveled to the island of St. Croix USVI. We love this island, the people, the animals, and the beauty of nature that abounds. As scuba divers, we are lucky to spend time exploring the reefs, observing wildlife, and experiencing the underwater magic of the island up close and personal. As musicians, we have felt so much love and support from the community on island, and we wanted to find a way to say thank you to everyone who has made us feel so welcomed. Since hurricanes Irma & Maria cut a path of destruction through the Caribbean in 2017, St. Croix has been through some hard times, but is gradually rebuilding and restoring homes, businesses, and the natural landscapes above and below the water. We’ve been trying to think of a way that we can help and express our gratitude. We decided that donating the proceeds from downloads of our new song “OCEAN” would be a way for us to contribute to this amazing place that has become our winter home. We’ve chosen some great non-profit organizations who are doing vitally important work for the people, creatures, and environment on island— St. Croix Animal Welfare Center, St. Croix Enviromental Association, Women’s Coalition of St. Croix, and World Ocean School. Learn more about each organization you’ll be helping by downloading the song. We hope to reach our goal of 3000 downloads ($15K) by Feb 29, 2020, which will be the final night of our 10th annual Winter Tour on island. Thank you so much for your support!”

A silver flash from the sinking sun, Then a shot of crimson across the sky That, bursting, lets a thousand colors fly And riot among the clouds; they run, Deepening in purple, flaming in gold, Changing, and opening fold after fold, Then fading through all of the tints of the rose into gray. Till, taking quick fright at the coming night, They rush out down the west, In hurried quest Of the fleeing day. Now above where the tardiest color flares a moment yet, One point of light, now two, now three are set To form the starry stairs,— And, in her firefly crown, Queen Night, on velvet slippered feet, comes softly down. Violet tries to identify as many V words on her beautiful island and while creating a story using as many V words as she can, discovers her island territories are rich in history and culture. Violet learns to appreciate her beloved islands even more as she learns that the United States Virgin Islands, once known as the Dansk Vestindien (Danish West indies) have been influenced by faraway places like Africa, Denmark, Spain, France, England, Vieques, Puerto Rico, the British Virgin Islands and many more. Throughout the day, Violet’s imagination takes her on an roller coaster of twists and turns and she gains a sense of pride in herself and her homeland: Virgin Islands Pride. Violet takes pride that she is from such a unique place surrounded by the blue waters of the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. As an illustrator, Stuart was a perfect fit for my first children’s book! Although a seasoned experienced artist, Stuart had never illustrated a children’s book, so this was a first for both of us. His challenge was to incorporate a certain combination of elements within each of the single illustrations required. We both had so much fun working together and loved the results! Ingrid Bough was born and raised on St. Croix, worked many years at the Library of Congress in Washington, D. C., and now has ventured into writing. The book has an “In Memorium” dedicated to her mother who retired from the USVI Department of Education. The storyline teaches history and culture in a very fun and engaging way. The customer reviews so far on both Barnes and Noble and Amazon are 5-star.

New York Times Best Selling Authors!

By the author of The Underground Railroad, Colson Whitehead brilliantly dramatizes another strand of American history in The Nickel Boys, through the story of two boys sentenced to a hellish reform school in Jim Crow-era Florida. Esi Edugyan’s Washington Black is an eleven-yearold field slave who knows no other life than the Barbados sugar plantation where he was born. When his master’s eccentric brother chooses him to be his manservant, Wash is terrified of the cruelties he is certain await him. But Christopher Wilde, or “Titch,” is a naturalist, explorer, scientist, inventor, and abolitionist. One of the NY Times 10 Best Books of the year. A superb and timely thriller, The Last Widow by NY Times bestselling author Karin Slaughter, is full of devious twists, disturbing secrets, and shocking surprises you won’t see coming. From the # 1 New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Gilbert, of Eat, Pray, Love and The Signature of All Things, a delicious novel of glamour, sex, and adventure. In City of Girls, a young woman discovers that you don’t have to be a good girl to be a good person. Claire Lombardo’s The Most Fun We Ever Had, is a dazzling, multigenerational novel in which the four adult daughters of a Chicago couple, still madly in love after forty years, recklessly ignite old rivalries until a long-buried secret threatens to shatter the lives they’ve built.

MEET COVER ARTIST PHYLLIS CHARLES Before moving to St. Croix, Phyllis lived for 30 years in upstate New York as a fiber artist and designer working in batik, soft sculpture and art quilting. She exhibited and sold her work at juried craft shows, including the American Craft Council show at Rheinbeck, the Market of American Crafts, and the Lincoln Center Craft Show. By 1989, she found herself volunteering for The Botanical Garden of the VI in St. George, St. Croix, and spent the next twelve years there. She served as Nursery Manager, Board President and Executive Director during the 1990’s and was also President of the St. Croix Hibiscus Society. All of these activities helped to develop an abiding interest and love of tropical plants, later reflected in her paintings. During her tenure, she developed and initiated Mango Melee, Art in the Garden, and the Christmas Gala. In 2002, she moved to Florida where she studied painting at the Vero Beach Art Museum, the Norton Art Museum, and with Kelly Arnold in Stuart, Florida. She exhibited with the Martin County Art Council, Palm City Art Associates, and at a variety of local juried art shows. During this time, she also exhibited in St. Croix at the annual Art in the Garden and the Caribbean Fine Arts Show at Good Hope School. Returning to St. Croix in 2011 she resumed painting her favorite tropical plants interspersed occasionally with local landscapes. Her work has appeared on the annual Caribbean Museum Center “Heartbreak Hotel Hibiscus.” of the Arts calendar, and she has shown her work there. In 2012, she was a founding member of the Artists Guild of St. Croix and helped develop and implement The Art Show at Canegata where she exhibited until 2018 when Hurricane Maria prevented the show. In 2014, her image Lower Love, Late Afternoon appeared on the cover of the August issue of St. Croix This Week, and St. George Rainforest was on the cover of the September issue that year. Phyllis exhibited at “New Blood 2,” at the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts in 2018, and did a solo show, “Caribbean Roots,” at Walsh Gallery. In February 2019, she showed work at a solo show, “Light Play,” at Art @ Top Hat Gallery, Christiansted. Phyllis’s work is currently shown at Sweet Lime Furnishings, Constitution Hill. In May this year, she moved to Cape Cod, Massachusetts to pursue new opportunities in art. Current and archived work may be seen and purchased on her website. www.phyllischarles.com. Our Danish Connection VELKOMMEN!

Christiansted National Historic Site.

Ted Davis

A Facelift for Christiansted National Historic Site Structures by Nina York The exposure of buildings to our tropical climate with heat, high humidity and strong winds, sometimes all too strong in connection with a hurricane, will inevitably result in damage and mold. That has been the case for our historic buildings, although in many cases they have fared better than those of more recent date. The numerous structures built of Danish brick once brought here as ballast on the ships collecting sugar and rum here have survived surprisingly well. We see stone and brick edifices holding up while wooden ones will rot, break, or be eaten by termites. We can be thankful that so many of these fine examples of Danish Caribbean architecture erected by enslaved Africans are still standing. But they take a lot of work to maintain. Since 1952, The National Park Service has been the steward of the finest examples of this architectural legacy in Christiansted National Historic Site. During the past year an abundance of repair and restoration projects have taken place. Among them, replacing damaged roof and exterior wall areas of the Old Scale House, whose cedar shingles suffered hurricane as well as major termite damage. The shingles are now of mahogany to resist termite attacks. The same holds true for the roof replacement of the bandstand, a popular venue for concerts. A replacement gate to Fort Christiansvaern will provide protection and historic accuracy to that entrance. The old red sentry box was restored last year, and while perhaps the most popular of new improvements at the National Historic Site has only marginal historic connection, the renovated bathrooms will now provide relief for visitors and residents. The Danish West Indies and Guinea Company warehouse got a handsome coat of paint, and that is also planned for the Fort and Old Custom House. The old cannon at Fort Christiansvaern were renovated. The Steeple Building, built as the first Lutheran Church in 1753, has suffered major structural damage, and an evaluation of repairs needed is under way. The town of Christiansted is approaching its 300th anniversary, and it would be a laudable achievement to repair or remove numerous sadly damaged buildings along the eastern town entrance to allow safe foot traffic to and from Gallows Bay, especially for passengers off the mini-cruise ships that are planned to call on its newly dredged port area. Hopefully we will not have to wait till 2035, the anniversary date, for that to happen. Nina York, born in Denmark but a St. Croix resident since 1976, has been a contributor for this publication since 2009 and was its Managing Editor from 1990 – 2003. She now offers tours for visitors from Denmark and the mainland, does translations, and volunteers for Rotary and the Friends of Denmark Society.

(340) 776-0656. Oc tober / November 2019 • 39

Buck Island Charters, with Captain Heinz and his son Carl, is one of the oldest charter boat companies sailing to Buck Island Reef National Monument. Teroro II, a 42’ trimaran, is the first commercially built boat by Gold Coast Yachts at Salt River and chartered by Captain Heinz. Carl followed his father’s passion, after sailing and competing in his youth and after helping to captain Teroro II to Buck Island for 16 years, and now has is own boat Dragonfly, a 38’ trimaran. He and his father love to share their local knowledge with the guests aboard and give them a very personalized snorkeling tour of Buck Island Reef. We are recommended by Fromer’s Tour Guide and sail from Green Cay Marina.

DIVE EXPERIENCE — Diving St. Croix for 37 Years Michelle Pugh, a 41-year resident of St Croix, learned to dive in Los Angeles while high school and hasn’t stopped since! In 1992, along with Jacques Cousteau, she was inducted into the platinum Pro 5000 through SSI. In 2004, she was inducted into the Women Divers Hall of Frame for being the first woman to dive with killer whales in the wilds of Canada, the first American woman to teach diving in Moscow, Russia and for establishing the mooring system on St Croix to protect the coral reefs. Michelle was also given the SBDC and Congressional Award for Entrepreneurial Success for Dive Experience. Sam Halvorson, Captain, Instructor, Dive Master, and Videographer, has been on board for 29 years. He knows the reefs like the back of his hand. His videos are a favorite souvenir! Michelle, who’s made over 10,000 dives on St. Croix, is the only dive center owner that actually dives most everyday—guiding lots of customers by request. While developing

the dive mooring sites, she has explored most St Croix reefs and walls. Michelle has also traveled the world just to dive—like the East coast of the US from Florida to Rhode Island, the West coast from Canada to Mexico, The Red Sea, Australia, Solomon Islands, Borneo, PhilipSusan Wall pines, the Antarctic, and most of the Caribbean Islands. And, I recently returned from the Galapagos Islands! Dive Experience is St Croix’s first dive operator and the first PADI 5-star IDC center. They teach diving from novice to professional instructors. St. Croix is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea, is 82.8 square miles, 28 miles long x 7 miles wide. GETTING HERE. There are direct flights on American Airlines from Miami and Delta Airlines from Atlanta. Inter-island airlines are operated by Cape Air, Seaborne, and Sea Flight VI. AE IV Ferry Service operates between St. Thomas and St. Croix. US citizens don’t need a passport; departing visitors need a photo ID. CLIMATE. Year-round temperatures range in the 80s during the day, 70s most nights, with summer somewhat warmer. Easterly trade winds keep the humidity down. Most island showers are over in minutes. Residents collect rainwater from rooftops into household cisterns. Saltwater distillation plants help the supply. With water scarce, it is used sparingly. VIRGIN ISLANDERS. Virgin Islanders are a reserved but friendly people. “Good Morning,” “Good Afternoon,” and “Good Night” are welcome Crucian greetings. Everyone speaks English or a lilting version of it. TIME. Cable and Dish TV carry the national news stations. Pick up the St. Croix Avis and the VI Daily News in print and go online to St. Croix Source for local news. TELEPHONE & CELL PHONE. The local area code is 340 but you don’t need to dial it for local numbers. We have a local AT&T Store at Sunny Isle Shopping Center, 340-778-6400 and Sprint Store in Peter’s Rest, 340-713-0055 for forgotten cell phone accessories or information. POSTAL RATES. DRIVE SAFE— STAY LEFT Whether renting a car or crossing the street, it is vital to remember that traffic in the USVI flows from the left side of the road. St. Croix is 28 miles in length and 7 miles at the widest point with two major towns— Christiansted at the center on the north shore and Frederiksted at the west end. The Caribbean Sea which surrounds the island is always there to guide you along the roads that wind around the coast. Car rental agencies have a variety of vehicles available from sporty jeeps to roomy air-conditioned sedans, vans, and SUVs. The average price usually includes unlimited mileage but you fill the tank upon return! Both US and other driver’s licenses are recognized. The driver and front seat passenger are required by law to use seat belts and cell phone talking or texting is not allowed. Parking in Christiansted is limited and 2-hour parking on parts of Company and Queen Cross Streets is enforced. Look for the signs. There is daytime parking in the National Park Service lot near Ft. Christiansvaern, until 4:30 pm, and a public lot with fees on Strand and King Cross Street. Major roads are asphalt and usually well maintained. The Melvin H. Evans Highway is the only 4-lane, divided highway running from mid-island west to within 1 mile of Frederiksted. The speed limit is 55. In other areas, the 35 mph limit applies; in town, 20 mph unless otherwise posted. Let our Attractions & Tours pages (7-9) and our St. Croix Road Map (54 & 55) and town maps (56-58) help you plan your island tour!

Island Worship The history of our island is mirrored in its old church structures, many of which have recently been restored. The Moravian brethren, arriving here in the 1730s from Saxony in today’s Germany, founded their mission to bring Christianity to the enslaved part of the population. The historic Anglican (Episcopalian) churches built in Gothic style include St. John’s in Christiansted and, in Frederiksted, the beautifully restored St. Paul’s church. The large number of Irish settlers, along with Englishmen and Hispanics, have contributed to the presence of the Catholic church; Holy Cross in Christiansted is the oldest in the Virgin Islands. The Danish rule of the island from 1733 to 1917 brought the Lutheran church, which still plays a large role here. Lord God of Sabaoth in Christiansted occupies the former Dutch Reformed Church; Holy Trinity in Frederiksted was built shortly after the town was founded. The Dutch Reformed church (Presbyterian) now has a new mid-island home. These are just a few of the many (over 150) churches on St. Croix, from Seventh-Day Adventist to Methodist, Baptist, Church of God, and many more. Church attendance and activities are important to a large part of our population; visitors are always welcome at services, often a high point in their island experience. Many other faiths offer places of worship—a Jewish synagogue, a Hindu temple, and a Moslem mosque, to name a few. An easy-tofollow guide is actually the yellow pages of our local phone book beginning on Page 54.

Befolkningen. Virgin Islands befolkning er venlig men tilbageholdende. Man hilser gerne med “Good Morning,” “Good Afternoon,” og “Good Night.” Tider. (340) 776-0656. Her som allevegne, vær forsigtig.

Helligdage. Her fejrer man amerikanske helligdage foruden en hel del lokale. CHRISTIANSTED WALKING TOUR Let’s start a leisurely walking tour of CHRISTIANSTED at the site of the Old Scale House 1 on the harborfront, known as the Wharf. One section of the 1856 structure displays the scale used in former days to weigh barrels of rum and sugar. The other section holds a bookstore and gift shop as well as an information center about all things St. Croix. This is one of a complex of five buildings comprising the Christiansted National Historic Site, established in 1952, administered by the National Park Service.

Fort Christiansvaern 3 was the first public building to be started by the Danes after the island was purchased from France in 1733. It is built of Danish yellow brick and was completed in 1749 and later expanded. Its present appearance reflects the 1830’s period.

Originally, Government House 6 on King Street, was built as a home for a Danish merchant. That section dates from 1749; another section, the previous town house of a wealthy Danish plantation owner, was joined to it in 1826, together becoming the seat of the Danish West Indies government. The grand staircase and portico were added in 1830, as was the impressive ballroom/reception hall on the second floor by Governor General Peter von Scholten, who had his office and official residence here. The former are open to the public (entrance at mid-building on King Street). The Lutheran Church 7 across Queen Cross Street on King Street, was originally the Dutch Reformed Church, built in the 1740’s and transferred to the Lutherans in 1831, who brought the furnishings here from the Steeple Building. Later, the steeple was added. Walking up Queen Cross Street to Company Street takes you to Apothecary Hall 8 on the left corner, which holds both the tiny Apothecary Museum on Queen Cross Street, open anytime, and in the courtyard the Archaeological Museum, open only Saturdays 10 am-2 pm. Nearby on Company Street is the Old Market 9 , laid out in the original town plan from 1735, and still being used. The well dates from 1863. On this square you will also find the downtown Post Office.

Christiansted National Historic Site Established in 1952, Christiansted National Historic Site was the first unit of the National Park Saystem in the US Virgin Islands. The park’s historic buidings and grounds commemorate the Danish heritage (1733-1917) of the town of Christiansted, St. Croix, which was named in honor of the reigning King of Denmark and Norway, Christian VI. In the 1700s, Christiansted was part of a mercantile system that linked Europe,West Africa, and the Caribbean in the infamous “Triangular Trade.” Christiansted was the first town in the Lesser Antilles to be built on the grid system and to have a building code. Its distinctive colonial architecture reflects the town’s status as capital of the Danish West Indies (1755-1871); the great wealth generated by the export of cane sugar, molasses, and rum; and the influence of government building inspectors. Governor General Peter von Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the enslaved population in the Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848, from adjacent Buddhoe Park 2. The park contains a bronze bust of the renowned slave rebellion leader. The Oscar E. Henry Customs House 3 was built in the 1800s. The Freedom Fountain 4, facing the pier, was installed for the Emancipation 150th Anniversary Celebration. After severe damage during a labor insurrection in 1878, the town was rebuilt in Victorian style. Victoria House 5, on Strand Street, and Apothecary Hall 6, 63 on King Cross Street between King and Queen Streets, preserve the Frederksted architecture of that time. Both received storm damage in September. The Visitor’s Bureau 7, is located upstairs on Strand Street above the Frederiksted Mall and next door to the historic light blue building housing the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts 8. Frederiksted is home to a number of historic churches, including St. Paul’s Episcopal Church 9, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church 10, Friedensberg Moravian Church 11, and St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church 12. The newly restored Old Danish School 13, on Hospital Street and Market Street, is a handsome building. At Strand and Queen Cross Streets is the Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library 14, built in 1803. The Market Place 15, is still in use today, as it was in 1751 at the founding of Frederiksted.

VISIT HISTORIC ONE NORTH STREET STARTING IN NOVEMBER! hat would it be like to step back in time and visit St. Croix in another era? Beginning in November, One North Street will be open to the public for private tours, luncheons, and meetings. The tour includes an animated history lesson, designed by Mrs. Tyler to be informal and entertaining. Sit in the large gazebo amid lush tropical gardens and learn how St. Croix became one of the most prolific sugar producing islands in less than thirty years through oppressive slave labor. These wild times brought adventures, scoundrels, missionaries, drunkards and enslaved and indentured servants from all over the world creating a Melting Pot of culture that still exists today. Historic One North Street was featured in the prestigious international magazine The Magazine Antiques in their May/June issue this year with a photo of the formal dining room on the cover. The article, describing the differences in VI mahogany furniture and other furniture from the Caribbean, was written by Michael Connors, one of the world’s leading scholars in the study and documentation of Colonial-era architecture and decorative arts of the Caribbean and author of more than a dozen books on Caribbean architecture and furniture. Local photographers Clemrick Bryan and Nicole Canegata supplied the images.

This beautifully restored townhouse built circa 1760 of yellow brick, has a twelvefoot coral and sandstone wall surrounding its lush tropical gardens, where Red Foot land tortoise roam freely. It has large

double yellow brick stairways and a tunnel under the main house once used to lead horses to the stables in the courtyard. The home was purchased by George and Cynthia Tyler after Hurricane Hugo in 1989, as a ruin; George passed away in 2004 after a ten-year restoration of the property.

“It was a labor of love” says owner Cynthia Tyler, “we lived for four years in a coral and stone out-building, which is now the kitchen, as we restored the main house.” The house contains one of the Territories best collections of West Indian mahogany furniture and artifacts including some now rare pieces from Government House and the only Crucian coffin stand known to exist. George began collecting Caribbean mahogany furniture, specializing in Danish West Indian pieces crafted on St Croix and St Thomas. Each piece of island-made furniture was chosen for a specific location in the house. Cynthia says, “This house and its collection of mahogany furniture should never be separated. Moving with Kids to St. Croix Some people may think that moving your life to an island is a bold move reserved only for those with no strings attached, but parents move with their kids to St. Croix all the time. Our team here at Coldwell Banker goes beyond the role of selling real estate; we are your point-of-contact for all things ‘island life,’ including tips for moving to St. Croix with kids! Activities Our weather lends itself to being outdoors and active year-round! If you are looking for your “why” to make the move with kids, take a moment to picture your family’s island life—beach walks, sailing, snorkeling, hiking to a secluded beach...oh, the list could go on! Be careful asking our agents “what is there to do with kids on island” because they will enthusiastically give you an earful! Parent Community The St. Croix community makes everyone feel so welcome! Our Managing Broker, Bry Locher, sums it up perfectly “We have a really close community where people are willing to help and support each other. There is always someone that is a phone call away.” There are social media groups on Facebook, such as Tamarind Parents, that you can join right now. Feel free to ask questions, you will feel an immediate welcome by their responses! Schools There are several public, private and Montessori schools on St. Croix, plus an established home school network. When you visit St. Croix before your move, schedule school visits to ensure you find the right environment for you and your child. Medical Beyond general medical services, our island is blessed with great pediatricians like the Pediatric Care Center and fantastic support services like Island Therapy Solutions, who can address a wide variety of needs. We look forward to welcoming you and your family to our Home Sweet Home—St. Croix!

igh in the western sky you will find that three bright stars are currently dominating the sky. Since these three form a large triangle which is visible during the Summer months, up North, they are called the Summer Triangle. Each bright star marks a different, star group or constellation. Brightest and highest in the sky is Vega, in Lyra the Harp. Fainter stars very close to Vega in the shape of a parallelogram form the harp. In mythology this is the harp invented by Hermes, which Mercury gave to Orpheus, the musician who joined Jason and the Argonauts. On another occasion Orpheus took his into the infernal regions and charmed Pluto, king of Hades, with the music of his harp to win back his lost bride Eurydice. To the South of Vega is Altair, in Aquila, the Eagle. Again, fainter stars nearby Altair form the Eagle and you will need a lot of imagination to find an eagle there. Aquila is the pet of Zeus and is often pictured carrying the young Ganymede into the heavens. Zeus wanted Ganymede as his cup bear and sent his eagle Aquila to bring him to Mount Olympus. Deneb is the third bright star and is to the to the East of Vega and Altair. Deneb

and marks the tail of Cygnus, the Swan. Perhaps you can see a Swan here. Faint stars form the Swan’s body and long neck and others the bird’s wings. There are many legends that might account for the presence of a Swan in the heavens. One myth states that the Swan represents Orpheus, who was slain by Bacchus. However Orpheus’ music was so wonderful that he was changed into a Swan and placed in the heavens near his beloved harp. Cygnus is flying South along a hazy band of light. This is the light from billions of stars so far away that you cannot see each one as a point of light. This is the Milky Way, our city of stars in the universe. High in the southern sky are four stars fainter than those of the Summer Triangle. These four somewhat bright stars form the body of Pegasus, the Flying Horse. Fainter stars to the West form the neck and head of the horse and others form the two front legs. This horse has no hind legs or tail. On October 20th Mercury will be at its highest point above the western horizon in the evening sky just after sunset. It is difficult to spot this planet in the twilight. Higher in the western sky are two bright planets: Jupiter and Saturn. Jupiter is the brighter and lower of the two. Jupiter

will set by 9:00 and Saturn by 10:30. The maximum of the Orionid Meteor Shower is the night of October 21st22nd. The Orionids produces up to 20 meteors (shooting stars) per hour at its peak. It is produced by dust grains left behind by Halley’s Comet. The last quarter Moon will block some of the fainter meteors this year. Best viewing will be from a dark location between midnight and dawn. While the meteors will seem to radiate from the constellation Orion they can appear anywhere in the sky. On November 11th there will be a rare Transit of Mercury across the Sun. The planet Mercury will move directly between the Earth and the Sun. To view this event you will need a telescope and an approved solar filter. The next transit of Mercury will not take place until 2039. There will be a conjunction of Venus and Jupiter on November 24th. As seen from Earth, the two bright planets will be very close together in the western sky just after sunset. On November 28th Mercury will be at its highest point above the eastern horizon just before sunrise. It is difficult to spot this planet in the twilight.
