Tel: (340) 772-1000 Fax: (340) 772-0333 Welcome to our beautiful Virgin Islands of the United States. Our islands are unique in what they each offer and our communities are filled with people who are proud of our storied history. While visiting, I encourage you to immerse yourself in our culture and to explore the unique offerings of all four Islands that make up our paradise.

St. Croix, the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, sits to the south of our small island chain and is renowned for its pastoral landscapes, Danish architecture and historical landmarks. With its offshore wrecks and unbelievably beautiful underwater reefs, St. Croix is also a popular destination for diving enthusiasts. Be sure to visit the historic towns of Frederiksted and Christiansted and indulge in St. Croix’s renowned art and delicious culinary scenes. St. John is one of the smaller U.S. Virgin Islands and conservation center of the territory. It is best known for its pristine beaches and the attractions within the Virgin Islands National Park, which occupies more than half the island. The lands in the Virgin Islands National Park shelter migrant birds and the mangroves support corals and anemones. As with all the Virgin islands, you will find that St. John provides a rich mix of our culture and history. St. Thomas is our business and shopping center and the seat of government. Charlotte Amalie is the capital town of the U.S. Virgin Islands and is one of the busiest ports of call for cruise ships in the Caribbean. St. Thomas is among the most popular destinations in the Caribbean for sailing and yachting enthusiasts. Water Island is the smallest of the U.S. Virgin Islands and rests just off the coast of St. Thomas. It is mostly residential but offers fun attractions like Honeymoon Beach and quaint accommodations. The island can be reached by ferry from the Crown Bay Marina or by other vessels. As the Lieutenant Governor and Governor, both Treganza Roach and I wish you a warm, fun-filled stay and please accept our invitation to return often to our paradise. Albert Bryan, Jr. Governor

67TH ANNUAL CRUCIAN CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL 2019-2020 “What A Sight To See: Music, Culture, and Pageantry”

Dear Visitor, Welcome to St. Croix, a land of spectacular beauty, rich cultural diversity and intriguing history. The largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, with 84 square miles of rolling hillsides, pristine beaches and a tropical rainforest, St. Croix offers endless opportunities to pursue your heart’s desire and create a unique vacation experience. Adventurers and nature lovers can spend time hiking, kayaking, horseback riding, sailing or golfing at one of our championship golf courses. Scuba diving enthusiasts can experience five different dives in one day. For a more relaxed approach, swim in the crystalline waters of Buck Island, the only naturally occurring underwater National Monument in the U.S. History buffs can experience St. Croix’s vibrant history through its architecture, historic landmarks, food, music and traditions. Explore the magnificent Estate Whim Museum, a restored 18th century greathouse and sugar plantation, Forts Christiansvaern and Frederik or tour the lush gardens of the St. George Village Botanical Garden. Early risers can catch a picturesque sunrise at Point Udall, the easternmost point in the United States. Christiansted and Frederiksted, our main seaside towns, are a shopper’s nirvana with charming boutiques offering everything from handcrafted jewelry and apparel to colorful local art. Visitors enjoy a generous $1,600 duty-free shopping allowance. Our chic hotels, resorts and cozy bed-and-breakfast inns will pamper you with warm hospitality, while our world-class restaurants tempt your taste buds with local and international menus. St. Croix’s wide array of the entertainment choices, including fairs, festivals, live concerts and gaming venues ensure that the fun never ends. On behalf of the Department of Tourism, I hope you have an amazing vacation experience in St. Croix. Thank you for choosing the U.S. Virgin Islands.

St. Croix’s Crucian Christmas Festival is a 4-week extravaganza and our largest annual event anticipated and prepared for months ahead. Highlighting traditions, history, music, crafts, food, and drinks, it starts in December and ends with the Three Kings Day Parade in January. There is an ambitious and growing line-up of events starting with the Prince, Princess, and Queen pageants, to singing contests, early morning tramps, band competitions, and a colorful festival village and amusement park, called StanleyVille this year, and fireworks. But nothing equals the excitement of the parades at the end of the festivities—the Children’s Parade, where steel pan orchestras from schools and churches and groups of majorette twirlers vie for being the favorite of the crowd along the King Street route in Frederiksted. The following day, the Three Kings Day Adult Parade is the grand finale with over a hundred troupes, floats, and individual entries—all to the beat of loud music, bodies swaying, fantastic costumes, pageantry and pulsating energy and merriment, starting before noon and continuing until after dark. In 2013, after her daughter graduated from Le Cordon Bleu in Orlando, she came home to St. Croix and began receiving orders for cakes and cupcakes. “As I helped her prep orders, I had fond memories my childhood in the kitchen with my late maternal grandmother Florita Petersen (Mudda). Getting the recipes from my aunt and making my first batch of tarts took me back to my six-year-old self in the kitchen beside her.” Our goal— to make cakes and locals desserts, just like Mudda used to make! MEET OUR COVER ARTISTS JANE AKIN December

LUCIEN DOWNES January

Drawn to the Caribbean for its’ vivid colors, culture, sea life and flora, Jane Akin moved to St. Croix in 1998 to enjoy painting full time and living the island life. Jane received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the University of North Texas where she fine tuned her knowledge of the arts. Working both as an artist and Interior Designer has given her the insight and expertise in all mediums of art. Jane’s watercolors depict larger than life flora, fauna and sea life enabling you to appreciate their beauty up close and personal. Jane’s subjects are as varied as are her interests in life. Architecture, tropical flora, fauna, landscapes and sea life are among her favorite subjects. Jane lives a continual quest to explore and experiment with new methods & mediums. Adding to her already extensive arsenal of artistic techniques is her work with acrylics, resin, collage and mixed media. Jane has impressively mastered these mediums with her natural given talent. Jane is a founding member and former board member of the Artists Guild of St. Croix whose mission it is to promote the visual arts on St. Croix and the artists who live there. She strives to encourage new and seasoned artists alike to showcase their work. Her art work can be found in private collections in the Caribbean, Europe and in the United States mainland. You can view and purchase her original art at her home studio by appointment as well as at Sampson House, Many Hands, and Art @ Top Hat Gallery in Christiansted, Sweet Lime Furnishings, Constitution Hill, at the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts in Frederiksted, and at various local art shows. She will be participating in the “Showcase of Culture” at Art @ Top Hat Gallery, Company Street, in December. The opportunity to teach and inspire others naturally emerged. Jane offers instruction in watercolor, acrylic, oil and mixed media for all skill levels as well as color theory. Jane is the resident artist for The Buccaneer Hotel on St. Croix.

Born and raised in the USVI on St. Croix but currently residing between here and Atlanta, GA, Lucien is a contemporary, abstract, and figurative artist that demonstrates freedom of thought and expression through mixed media. His works are composed of spiritual and worldly elements that function independently or merge to encompass a whole. Lucian utilizes resin, acrylic, fibers, raw pigments, plexiglass and found objects to create his pieces. In 2015, Lucien’s piece “Phoenix Rising” was selected by the Textile Museum of Canada to represent the USVI in its “Water Colour” exhibit for the Pan Am Games. He was among 41 world-renowned artists to participate in this show featuring their digital images printed on sails. www. textilemuseum.com Among others, Lucien’s work has been exhibited at the Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson International Airport (2012), The Alliance Theater for the Arts in Atlanta (2011), The Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts, Frederiksted (2011), Art @ Top Hat Gallery and Marjorie Robbins Gallery, Christiansted (2013), The Caribbean Fine Arts Exhibit, St. Croix (2009-2014), and The Caribbean Colour Exhibit, St. Thomas (2013-2016). He has had several one-man shows as well—“Ascension,” Georgia Perimeter College, Atlanta (2011), “Visions,” Sam Flax Art & Design, Atlanta (2010), and “Fazes,” Atlanta Foundation for Public Space (2012). Lucien’s work is on display in the homes of Maya Angelou, Teddy Rielly, and other private collections around the world. His public projects include The Atlanta Belt Line Project (2013), The Frederiksted Mural Project, St. Croix (2015), and the Christiansted, St. Croix Culture Mural Project (2017). Our Danish Connection VELKOMMEN!

Peter and his sister eagerly await Christmas . Peters Jul pa Roskilde Museum.

Looking Back at an Old-Fashioned Danish Christmas by Nina York The holiday of Christmas is one that carries a lot of traditions with it, and the familiarity of activities linked to this holiday makes it more treasured and enjoyable. It is known as the holiday that children love, and while receiving gifts will be at the top of their preferences, the familiar food and activity of this season brings a happy closeness to the family. In former days, specifically the latter part of the 19th century, Christmas took on great importance as the time of year when generosity and spending on what was then considered luxuries was allowed. A book that was published in Denmark in 1866, titled Peters Jul (Peter’s Christmas), has survived as a romantic image of a family Christmas. We realize that, despite so many changes that society has undergone since then, we treasure the sentiments it represents. Peter is a schoolage boy living in a Danish city with his parents and sisters; they also have a cook, maid and a driver, which was customary even for families of modest income. Peter is eagerly awaiting Christmas, which in Denmark (and many other European countries) is celebrated Christmas Eve, with churchgoing for some, and for all a festive dinner. The music of the season is more religious in Denmark than here, a carry-over from the past. A traditional menu calls for rice porridge, nowadays replaced by a dessert rice pudding; one of the servings contains a secret hidden almond. The lucky almond finder wins a prize of a marzipan pig, the almond gift. At Peter’s home back then, the main course was a goose that would be stuffed with prunes and apples and served with caramelized potatoes and cooked red cabbage. Today’s Christmas menu would most likely feature duck instead of goose, or a turkey, but the other ingredients are the same now as then. Sweet-tasting baked goods are prepared in large quantities and are enjoyed with nuts and candy as the group gathers near the Christmas tree; a real one, of course, even today. The ornaments are not like the baubles seen in this part of the world. Danish ones are mostly made of paper, including garlands of Danish flags, braided red and white paper heart baskets and cones, angels, little straw animals and snowflake designs, and a star at the top. In former days, real candles were obligatory for lights on the tree; today the fire hazard posed thereby has led to electric bulbs being predominant. Now the family gathers in a circle around the tree and dance and sing a few of the more lively carols. In former days the ornaments held candy treats. Next, gifts are passed around, sometimes by a Julemand (Santa Claus) who may resemble a family member, and the evening continues with music and cozy socializing. In former days, the servants would get a Christmas bonus. Peter was very happy with his modest gifts. Nina York, born in Denmark but a St. Croix resident since 1976, has been a contributor for this publication since 2009 and was its Managing Editor from 1990-2003. She now offers tours for visitors from Denmark and the mainland, does translations, and volunteers for Rotary and the St. Croix Friends of Denmark Society.

(340) 776-0656. December 2019 / Januar y 2020 • 39

PangeaSeed Foundation’s public art program, Sea Walls: Artists for Oceans, brings the oceans into streets around the world. With the help from their growing community of 300+ supporting artists, they continue to bring attention to the global plight of our oceans through ARTivism. They are fostering a new breed of conservation through community engagement and empowerment through public art with its ability to revitalize and beautify once-decaying neighborhoods and districts. By harnessing this incredible medium, they are reconnecting and educating communities with the planet’s most important ecosystem: our ocean. Pairing up locally with Clean Sweep Frederiksted and The Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts in Frederiksted, the first Sea Walls: Artists for Oceans project is coming to St. Croix. In December 2019, a team of international and local artists will gather here, over a period of 10 days, to create a series of culturally sensitive public artworks, giving a voice to the oceans, raising environmental awareness, and adding vibrancy to the community at the same time. The public artworks will serve as educational tools and conversation-starters throughout the project and beyond. Addressing marine environmental issues relevant to the local community, the goal is to ignite ownership for the sustainability of natural resources. With 350 murals completed in 15 countries, PangeaSeed says that St. Croix’s status as a US territory, tourist destination, and its environmental richness make it an ideal host location for the next Sea Walls: Artists for Oceans project. They feel that St. Croix is home to a rich culture and a diverse marine ecosystem—its a nestingground for sea turtles, boasts two bioluminescent bays, and is consistently ranked as a top diving spot in the world by Scuba Diving magazine. St. Croix also takes responsibility for its wildlife and marine resources through Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge, Buck Island Reef National Monument, one of three St. Croix National Parks, and East End Marine Park.

LOCATION/SIZE. St. Croix coordinates are 17 45’N x 64 45’W. We are part of the US Virgin Islands, located 90 miles East of Puerto Rico, and part of the Antilles chain from the Bahamas down to Trinidad. St. Croix is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea, is 82.8 square miles, 28 miles long x 7 miles wide. GETTING HERE. There are direct flights on American Airlines from Miami and Delta Airlines from Atlanta. Inter-island airlines are operated by Cape Air, Seaborne, and Sea Flight VI. AE IV Ferry Service operates between St. Thomas and St. Croix. US citizens don’t need a passport; departing visitors need a photo ID. CLIMATE. Year-round temperatures range in the 80s during the day, 70s most nights, with summer somewhat warmer. Easterly trade winds keep the humidity down. Most island showers are over in minutes. Residents collect rainwater from rooftops into household cisterns. Saltwater distillation plants help the supply. With water scarce, it is used sparingly. VIRGIN ISLANDERS. Virgin Islanders are a reserved but friendly people. “Good Morning,” “Good Afternoon,” and “Good Night” are welcome Crucian greetings. Everyone speaks English or a lilting version of it. TIME. We are on Atlantic Standard Time (AST), one hour earlier than EST but the same as EST during Daylight Savings. CURRENCY & BANKING. We use the US dollar and credit cards are accepted everywhere. Cable and Dish TV carry the national news stations. Pick up the St. Croix Avis and the VI Daily News in print and go online to St. Croix Source for local news. TELEPHONE & CELL PHONE. The local area code is 340 but you don’t need to dial it for local numbers. We have a local AT&T Store at Sunny Isle Shopping Center, 340-778-6400 and Sprint Store in Peter’s Rest, 340-713-0055 for forgotten cell phone accessories or information. POSTAL RATES. As part of the US postal system, 1st class mail is .50 cents for the first ounce, postcards are .35 cents, international rates are $1.20 for cards and letters. See maps for post office locations. WHAT TO WEAR. Island dress is casual but bathing suits and men without shirts in town or grocery stores is frowned upon. Men don’t need ties or jackets; hats are great sun protectors for everyone. No adaptors needed for personal plug-ins. MARINE LIFE. All native plants, animals, fish (unless harvested for food), coral and shells are protected under the Indigenous Species Act. You will not be permitted to leave the territory with any plants or marine life in your possession. HOLIDAYS. We celebrate US Federal holidays and local ones as well. The government closes for all holidays, banks close for most. Shops stay open except on major holidays. VISITORS BUREAU. Department of Tourism offices are located upstairs in the Frederiksted Mall, next to the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts on Strand Street. Open weekdays and cruise ship days, 340-772-0357. DRIVE SAFE— STAY LEFT Whether renting a car or crossing the street, it is vital to remember that traffic in the USVI flows from the left side of the road. St. Croix is 28 miles in length and 7 miles at the widest point with two major towns— Christiansted at the center on the north shore and Frederiksted at the west end. The Caribbean Sea which surrounds the island is always there to guide you along the roads that wind around the coast. Car rental agencies have a variety of vehicles available from sporty jeeps to roomy air-conditioned sedans, vans, and SUVs. The average price usually includes unlimited mileage but you fill the tank upon return! Both US and other driver’s licenses are recognized. The driver and front seat passenger are required by law to use seat belts and cell phone talking or texting is not allowed. Parking in Christiansted is limited and 2-hour parking on parts of Company and Queen Cross Streets is enforced. Look for the signs. There is daytime parking in the National Park Service lot near Ft. Christiansvaern, until 4:30 pm, and a public lot with fees on Strand and King Cross Street. Major roads are asphalt and usually well maintained. The Melvin H. Evans Highway is the only 4-lane, divided highway running from mid-island west to within 1 mile of Frederiksted. The speed limit is 55. In other areas, the 35 mph limit applies; in town, 20 mph unless otherwise posted. Let our Attractions & Tours pages (7-9) and our St. Croix Road Map (54 & 55) and town maps (56-58) help you plan your island tour!

Rejsemål St. Croix Godt at Vide!

USVI Dept. of Tourism

Island Worship The history of our island is mirrored in its old church structures, many of which have recently been restored. The Moravian brethren, arriving here in the 1730s from Saxony in today’s Germany, founded their mission to bring Christianity to the enslaved part of the population. The historic Anglican (Episcopalian) churches built in Gothic style include St. John’s in Christiansted and, in Frederiksted, the beautifully restored St. Paul’s church. The large number of Irish settlers, along with Englishmen and Hispanics, have contributed to the presence of the Catholic church; Holy Cross in Christiansted is the oldest in the Virgin Islands. The Danish rule of the island from 1733 to 1917 brought the Lutheran church, which still plays a large role here. Lord God of Sabaoth in Christiansted occupies the former Dutch Reformed Church; Holy Trinity in Frederiksted was built shortly after the town was founded. The Dutch Reformed church (Presbyterian) now has a new mid-island home. These are just a few of the many (over 150) churches on St. Croix, from Seventh-Day Adventist to Methodist, Baptist, Church of God, and many more. Church attendance and activities are important to a large part of our population; visitors are always welcome at services, often a high point in their island experience. Many other faiths offer places of worship—a Jewish synagogue, a Hindu temple, and a Moslem mosque, to name a few. An easy-tofollow guide is actually the yellow pages of our local phone book beginning on Page 54.

Befolkningen. Virgin Islands befolkning er venlig men tilbageholdende. Man hilser gerne med “Good Morning,” “Good Afternoon,” og “Good Night.” Tider. (340) 776-0656. Her som allevegne, vær forsigtig.

Helligdage. Her fejrer man amerikanske helligdage foruden en hel del lokale. A series of dive site descriptions.

Frederiksted Pier – One of St Croix’s most favorite dive locations. Best “muck diving” in the Caribbean! Look for Frog fish, Seahorses, Bat fish, Eels and many schools of fish. This is a shallow dive so you can get an hour or more dive time in.

20.

Swirling Reef of Death – This is a shallow reef area with lots of juvenile reef fish. Just like diving in an aquarium! If you want to go deeper, there is a nice slope to go down.

CHRISTIANSTED WALKING TOUR Let’s start a leisurely walking tour of CHRISTIANSTED at the site of the Old Scale House 1 on the harborfront, known as the Wharf. One section of the 1856 structure displays the scale used in former days to weigh barrels of rum and sugar. The other section holds a bookstore and gift shop as well as an information center about all things St. Croix. This is one of a complex of five buildings comprising the Christiansted National Historic Site, established in 1952, administered by the National Park Service.

P

Fort Christiansvaern 3 was the first public building to be started by the Danes after the island was purchased from France in 1733. It is built of Danish yellow brick and was completed in 1749 and later expanded. Its present appearance reflects the 1830’s period.

Originally, Government House 6 on King Street, was built as a home for a Danish merchant. That section dates from 1749; another section, the previous town house of a wealthy Danish plantation owner, was joined to it in 1826, together becoming the seat of the Danish West Indies government. The grand staircase and portico were added in 1830, as was the impressive ballroom/reception hall on the second floor by Governor General Peter von Scholten, who had his office and official residence here. The former are open to the public (entrance at mid-building on King Street). The Lutheran Church 7 across Queen Cross Street on King Street, was originally the Dutch Reformed Church, built in the 1740’s and transferred to the Lutherans in 1831, who brought the furnishings here from the Steeple Building. Later, the steeple was added. Walking up Queen Cross Street to Company Street takes you to Apothecary Hall 8 on the left corner, which holds both the tiny Apothecary Museum on Queen Cross Street, open anytime, and in the courtyard the Archaeological Museum, open only Saturdays 10 am-2 pm. Nearby on Company Street is the Old Market 9 , laid out in the original town plan from 1735, and still being used. The well dates from 1863. On this square you will also find the downtown Post Office.

Christiansted National Historic Site Established in 1952, Christiansted National Historic Site was the first unit of the National Park Saystem in the US Virgin Islands. The park’s historic buidings and grounds commemorate the Danish heritage (1733-1917) of the town of Christiansted, St. Croix, which was named in honor of the reigning King of Denmark and Norway, Christian VI. In the 1700s, Christiansted was part of a mercantile system that linked Europe,West Africa, and the Caribbean in the infamous “Triangular Trade.” Christiansted was the first town in the Lesser Antilles to be built on the grid system and to have a building code. Its distinctive colonial architecture reflects the town’s status as capital of the Danish West Indies (1755-1871); the great wealth generated by the export of cane sugar, molasses, and rum; and the influence of government building inspectors. Governor General Peter von Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the enslaved population in the Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848, from adjacent Buddhoe Park 2. The park contains a bronze bust of the renowned slave rebellion leader. The Oscar E. Henry Customs House 3 was built in the 1800s. The Freedom Fountain 4, facing the pier, was installed for the Emancipation 150th Anniversary Celebration. After severe damage during a labor insurrection in 1878, the town was rebuilt in Victorian style. Victoria House 5, on Strand Street, and Apothecary Hall 6, 63 on King Cross Street between King and Queen Streets, preserve the Frederksted architecture of that time. Both received storm damage in September. The Visitor’s Bureau 7, is located upstairs on Strand Street above the Frederiksted Mall and next door to the historic light blue building housing the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts 8. Frederiksted is home to a number of historic churches, including St. Paul’s Episcopal Church 9, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church 10, Friedensberg Moravian Church 11, and St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church 12. The Arthur Able Complex 13, formerly The Danish School (1799), is now the office of the Governor in Fredersted at Hospital and Market Street. At Strand and Queen Cross Streets is the Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library 14, built in 1803. The Market Place 15, is still in use today, as it was in 1751 at the founding of Frederiksted.

Take a DEEP Breath In Breathe your sternum tall to instantly improve your posture!

When is the first time you take a deep breath? Do you ever intentionally do so? Give it a try right now… I’ll wait. How did that feel? Sit up as straight as you can, lightly roll your shoulders back, look straight ahead and try again. Was that easier and deeper? Many of us take breath for granted. Let’s examine how our breath is our best tool for healing! Breathing gets oxygen into our lungs, where it is transferred into our blood supply and then our heart pumps that blood all over. This oxygen is delivered to all muscles but more importantly to all major organs! Oxygen is VITAL for your organs to operate at 100%. Breathing plays a major role in helping to improve your posture. Our favorite cue: “breathe your sternum tall!” When you do this, you are helping to extend your mid-spine, ultimately balancing your head over your shoulders. In a more balanced and engaged posture you can instantly improve most movements (read: pains)! Chiropractic adjustments allow your body to easily “breathe your sternum tall!” Breath can help combat osteoarthritis!! If you breathe yourself tall, you activate many smaller “accessory” muscles that open your rib cage, stabilize your spine, and decompress your joints. You take the force of gravity (constantly compressing you) and the weight of your body and place it into muscles which get stronger from that stress. Great for all exercise! When we slouch into postures, we take all those stresses and place it into our bones which will degenerate from the stress. After years of shallow breathing, our bodies will become stiffer and unable to take in our deepest breath possible. Getting adjusted combats years of bad posture and shallow breathing and gives us the one tool we always have at our disposal to optimize healing! Quick Exercise: the 4 – 7 – 8 breath 1. Breathe in deeply for a count of 4 2. Hold for a count of 7 3. Exhale for a count of 8 4. Repeat for 10 breaths!

eminids Meteor Shower peaks on the night of December 13th–14th. Unfortunately the nearly Full Moon will block out all but the brightest meteors. Best viewing will be from a dark location between midnight and dawn. Meteors will seem to radiate from the constellation Gemini, but can appear anywhere in the sky. The December solstice occurs on the 21st. The Sun will have reached its southernmost position in the sky and will be directly over the Tropic of Capricorn. This is the first day of winter (Winter Solstice) in the Northern Hemisphere and the first day of summer (Summer Solstice) in the Southern Hemisphere. Every year, at this time, people ask astronomers if they know what was the star of stars, the star which lead the Wise Men to Bethlehem at the time of the birth of Jesus? Long ago people thought of everything that they saw in the night sky as a “star”. Thus, the planets, the “fixed” stars, meteors, comets, etc. all were “stars”. So what might have been “The Star”? Meteors or shooting stars happen so quickly that if you see one, by the time you tell your friends to look, the flash will be gone. Certainly a meteor did not send the Wise Men to Bethlehem. Comets were well known, but were considered omens of bad tidings and thus a comet would not send the Wise Men in search of a great king. The fixed stars do not change from year to year, so they would not account for the search. For time to time a star may “explode” as a nova or supernova, and for a short time may even become visible in the daytime. But, our records show no “guest star” at the time of Christ’s birth. The Wise Men followed the motions of the planets as these “wandering stars” moved against the background of fixed stars, for they believed that the motions of these wandering stars could foretell the future. With their knowledge of the motions of the heavens they could calculate that Jupiter and Saturn would pass each other three times and then be joined by Mars. But, what of Herod and his advisors, why did they not see this “star”? Most of the event

would not be visible because it would happen during the day. But, the Wise Men knew that it was happening. They knew that this event would take place in Pisces, the Fish, a star group which for them was symbolic of the Hebrews. Thus some great event would take place in the land of the Hebrews and the Wise Men were off on their search. Was this meeting of the planets really “The Star”? Astronomers do not know; the final decision is yours. The night of January 3th–4th is the maximum of the Quadrantids Meteor Shower. From a good dark location you may see up to 40 meteors (shooting stars) per hour Best viewing will be between midnight dawn. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Boötes, but can appear anywhere in the sky. On February 10th Mercury will be at Greatest Eastern Elongation. This is the best time to view Mercury since it will be at its highest point above the horizon. Look for the planet low in the western sky just after sunset. The very bright Venus will dominate the western sky after sunset. It is the third brightest natural object in the sky after the Sun and the Moon. Mars rises in the East around 3:00 a.m. and Jupiter follows at about 4:30. They will be easier to spot if you wait a few hours for the planets to climb higher in the sky. Just as dawn is approaching, Saturn will climb above the eastern horizon. Dominating the sky almost directly overhead are seven bright stars that form Orion, the Hunter. Two stars form his shoulders (bright red Betelgeuse and Bellatrix), two more his knees (Saiph and the very bright Rigel) and three his belt. According to legend Orion was such a mighty hunter that he boasted that he could defeat any animal on Earth in battle. Suddenly a scorpion appeared, stung Orion on the foot and Orion died. However, Orion was such a great hunter that he was given immortality and placed in the heavens. The scorpion was also placed in the night sky, but you never seen Orion and the scorpion at the same time.

Orion is not alone in his celestial hunt. By Orion’s feet are his two hunting dogs. Canis Major the Big Dog is easy to find. Look for the brightest star in the night sky, Sirius, and you have found the Big Dog. Between Sirius and Orion is a somewhat fainter star, this is Procyon and Canis Minor, the Little Dog. Higher in the sky than Betelgeuse is another bright red-orange star. This is Aldebaran, the red right eye of Taurus, the Bull. A “V” shape of fainter star, lying on its side, forms the Bull’s head. Perhaps because of the stars seen near Aldebaran that form a “V” shape, many cultures have thought of this part of the sky as a bull. Perhaps the V reminded people of a bull’s horns. To the Greeks, Taurus represented Jupiter when he transformed himself into a pure white bull. In this form Jupiter carried Europa across the sea to Crete. Riding on the Bull’s shoulder, to the northwest of Aldebaran is a group of stars very close together. This star cluster is the Pleiades or Seven Sisters. This is without a doubt the best known of all star clusters. On a clear dark night, they are so easily spotted that they have been noted in writing since at least 2357 B.C.E. The sisters were the seven daughters of Atlas and the sea-nymph Pleione. Modern observation has revealed that there are actually some 1,000 stars in this star cluster. Taurus is one of twelve constellations that form a band that encircles the sky, the Zodiac. It is to the zodiac, or zone of animals. Actually our modern zodiac has eleven real and mythological living creatures and one inanimate object, Libra the Scales. North of Procyon and East of Orion and Taurus are two stars, fairly close together and of about the same brightness. The two stars are Castor and Pollux, the heads of the Gemini twins. According to mythology, Castor and Pollux were and the sons of Jupiter. The twins accompanied Jason and the Argonauts in the quest for the Golden Fleece. Pollux was famous for his achievements in arms whereas Castor was a superior equestrian.
