Both residents and visitors will find on page after page of this helpful resource guide eyecatching attractions, on-island features, and other points of interest. Whether with family, friends, or on your own, this magazine has the inside track and advance view of all the upcoming events and activities on the “Big Island.” St. Croix’s relaxing beaches and rolling hillsides are the perfect complement for a weekend get-away, and the downtown shopping and restaurants in Christiansted and Frederiksted offer a variety of choices. There are hiking tours, snorkeling and scuba excursions, rainforest sights, and an abundance of other natural and cultural attractions throughout the island. Crucian Christmas Traditions A boat race, donkey races, and early morning tramp into town are other popular activities, but nothing equals the excitement of the parades at the end of the festivities – first the delightful children’s parade, where steel pan orchestras from schools and churches and groups of majorette twirlers vie for being the favorite of the crowds along the King Street route in Frederiksted. The following day, the Three Kings Day adult parade is the grand finale, featuring over a hundred troupes, floats, and individual entries – an extravaganza to the beat of loud music, bodies swaying, fantastic costumes, pageantry and pulsating energy and merriment, starting before noon and continuing until after dark. Large crowds line the parade route, and vendors of food and drink are interspersed. The village closes the following day with fireworks at the Frederiksted pier. Frederiksted is the main venue of the festival because of its wide streets for the parades, but Christiansted has a three-day mini-festival kick-off with a food fair, vendors, and rides for the children at Canegata Ball Park opening December 6. If you think Christmas is defined by a snowy landscape and warming yourself by a blazing fireplace, our tropical Christmas may surprise you! Admittedly, local traditions have had to yield Santa a place in our tropical celebration of Christianity’s major holiday. Tradition plays a large role in the Virgin Islands and, back in former days of slavery, Christmas and Easter were the only times the enslaved population were given time off. That called for celebration, which consisted of dressing up in costumes, masquerading, and making calls at other plantations, where dancing and merrymaking marked these gatherings. But with religious life playing a large role, churchgoing to celebrate the birth of Christ was and remains a major seasonal activity.

Additional activities, not part of the official program but equally anticipated every year are the Boxing Day horse races and, in Christiansted harbor, the lighted Boat Parade.

The official Christmas Festival today extends for a whole month, from early December to a Three Kings Day parade the first week in January. But preparations for the celebrations and elaborate parade costumes begin months ahead. Starting with a prince and princess contest, later a competition for the queen title, a calypso monarch singing contest for adults and youngsters, a band competition and musical theme selection all draw crowds to their venues, and the festival village and amusement park with booths offering traditional food and drink, cultural performances and trinkets for sale continue for two weeks.

The history of our island is mirrored in its old church structures, many of which have recently been restored. The Moravian brethren, arriving here in the 1730s from Saxony in today’s Germany, founded their mission to bring Christianity to the enslaved part of the population. Their handsome yellow buildings at the entrance to Christiansted and red-roofed white wooden church mid-island, along with a contemporary church in Frederiksted, attest to their continued importance.

This fascinating shop is found at the gateway to Gallows Bay — turn left after Tutto Bene on East End Road. Here you’ll discover an assortment of different, fun gifts and collectibles. The historic Anglican (Episcopalian) churches built in Gothic style include St. John’s in Christiansted, and in Frederiksted the beautifully restored St. Paul’s church, which had been damaged by a fire in 1996. These and other Anglican churches bear witmess to the large English population which settled here (and also brought us our custom of left lane driving. The large number of Irish settlers, along with Englishmen and Hispanics, have contributed to the presece of the Catholic church; Holy Cross in Christiansted is the oldest in the Virgin Islands; also significant and historic are St. Ann’s (with an interesting shrine) mid-island, St. Joseph’s on Centerline, and St. Patrick’s in Frederiksted.

The Danish rule of the island from 1733 to 1917 brought the Lutheran church, which still plays a large role here. Lord God of Sabaoth in Christiansted occupies the former Dutch Reformed Church; Holy Trinity in Frederiksted was built shortly after the town was founded.

The Dutch Reformed church (Presbyterian) now has an new mid-island home. But these are just a few of the many (at last count over 150) churches on St. Croix, from Seventh-Day Adventist to Methodist, Baptist, Church of God, any many more. You will find that church attendance and activities are important to a large part of our population, and visitors are always welcome at services,often a high point in their experience of our island.

With holiday season in full swing, many of us look for a special wine to accompany our festive meals. Fine restaurants have enhanced their wine lists and offer a host of wines ideal for a feast or a toast. Byron Gregory, General Manager and Wine Consultant at Prestige Wine Group, suggests Turley Juvenile Zinfandel. “This is a perfect wine for the varied holiday flavors---especially here in the Caribbean with our pumpkin and squash dishes, our turkey and macaroni,” he says. Like older vine Zinfandels, the Turley Juvenile Zinfandel hints of spice and pepper. The younger grape may not be as smooth as older ones but boasts a fresh style. “Turley is the California specialist in single vineyard Zinfandels. It makes 32 wines of which 29 are Zinfandels,” Gregory says. “Many of the vines are between 50 and 75 years old; juvenile vines are 6-25.” As older vines cease producing, Turley wants the next generation underway. Started by Larry Turley in St. Helena, CA in 1993, the boutique winery produces only 16,000 cases a year. Most are sold through Turley’s mailing lists. “This leaves about 5000 cases for distribution around the world,” says Gregory. “Sixteen states and the Virgin Islands get the wine.” St. Croix has been privileged. When Christina Turley, Director of Sales and Marketing, visited, she fell in love with the island. “I think that’s why we’re blessed to get so many types of Turley here,” says Gregory. Nikki Cicero and her sister, Pi Presto form the dynamic duo that owns and operates Freedom City Surf Board Shop & Beach Grill on Frederiksted Beach. “A dance of science and culture, nature and domesticity, technology and mythology, comfort and conflict: the smallest of particles and the size of the universe merge into one dream of beauty, color, tension, pattern, balance and surprise.” “I was born in Michigan to a young military family and spent my childhood traipsing around the country and the globe as my father’s career set a path for exploration. I was a daydreamy child, inventing my own fantastical inner worlds and constantly reading, drawing and creating. Each time my family moved, my mother would build up the excitement of seeing new places, meeting new friends, maybe even learning a new language. In the meantime, my engineer father would teach me mathematics by drawing calculus integrals on our car’s windshield during long road trips, and telling me I could achieve anything if I put my mind to it.

After graduation, I moved to Utah where I started a small graphic and web design studio and immersed myself in Salt Lake City’s rich and vibrant art scene. I studied painting, weaving and sculpture; built custom, modern wood furniture; owned a contemporary downtown art gallery hosting 12 shows a year; and served on the Board of Directors for the Utah Pride Center and the Executive Committee of the Utah Museum of Fine Art’s Young Benefactors.

Summers were spent at my maternal grandparents’ small golf course/motel in central Florida, swimming and catching lizards and watching great, silly TV shows: Looney Tunes, The Lil’ Rascals, I Dream of Jeannie, Bewitched, The Monkees. Holidays were spent with my paternal grandparents, watching my grandmother paint still-lifes, my grandfather make homemade sausage and meatballs, and playing with my nine aunts and uncles. Fast-forward to 1988, twelve schools later: my father was stationed at the American Embassy in Egypt. I spent a few very formative years in my late teens and early twenties in Cairo – most notably during the first Gulf War – working, making pen & ink drawings, travelling to the Sinai and talking world politics late into the night with my friends – who ranged in nationality from Tunisian to Palestinian, Greek, Egyptian, Kuwaiti, American, and everything in between. Higher education beckoned, so after a brief stint in New York City I rejoined my parents for their second tour in Germany and The Netherlands, working at a NATO storage facility and attending night classes. In 1993 I decided to follow in my father’s footsteps as an engineering student, leaving Europe for the remote and beautiful Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

In December 2008, I visited St. Croix and fell madly, swiftly in love with my future wife, Lisa, as well as the island and its people, history, critters and food. My imagination was taken with the world above and below the Caribbean Sea. St. Croix distills and reinvents various aspects of many of my past homes: the tropical lushness of my childhood summers in Florida; the deep history, cultural significance and diversity that I treasured in Egypt; the neighborly interconnectedness and extreme weather patterns of rural Upper Michigan; the multifaceted and vibrant art scene of Salt Lake City. It took me two years to wrap up various commitments in Utah in order to make St. Croix my home, and since moving here I’ve been inspired at every turn. I’ve been privileged to work closely with the St. Croix Landmarks Society and the newly-formed Christiansted Community Alliance – the optimism, forward-thinking and community focus of these organizations and the people behind them is uplifting and so incredibly important to positive change.

Farmland. My years at Michigan Technological University were an intense juxtaposition of mathematics, art, social causes and ska/ punk rock: both the right and left sides of my brain had one big party. In the end, the right side rose victorious – I switched from Chemical Engineering to Scientific and Technical Communications in the middle of my junior year, extremely excited about the brand-sparkly-new World Wide Web, the intersection of science and art, and the social, cultural and educational impacts of rhetoric and technology.

My original love is painting, although from 2004-10 I indulged my urge to reenvision spaces with site-specific, multimedia installations – my favorite was Hole No.3 of the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art’s Contemporary Masters: Artist Designed Miniature Golf exhibition. When I moved to St. Croix I returned to painting, and the experience has been akin to getting reacquainted with an old friend. Regardless of medium, my creative side distills a love for physics, nature, design, travel, culture, community and connection. I have great dreams of future projects and collaborations on St. Croix, and will continue to post my artistic adventures on my website at www.davinapallone.com.”

As a wedding photographer, I’m with the bride at the 5-minute call witnessing her range of emotions. That, and the fact that I have been a destination bride myself, qualify me to offer you some tips that will ease your nerves and make the short trip down the long aisle less stressful. Use the ladies room! So often with all the energy around the bride, this small detail is easily forgotten. With the bride anxious to get into her dress, this small detail could become a major issue if the wedding dress is tightly fitted, layered, or generally complicated. Since the dress, shoes, and jewelry are usually the last to go on before walking down the aisle, make sure to take a bathroom break. Drink Water! Many times when photographing brides getting ready, there is always a wealth of champagne flowing. However, remember to have a few bottles of water available as well. Save a bottle specifically for the 5-minute call. Its common to be nervous which may cause your mouth to become dry. The last thing you want is to feel and sound parched during the ceremony. A few sips of water will get you to the kiss! Take at least one minute to be alone. It’s an awesome feeling to be completely surrounded by people especially in the moments leading up to the ceremony and, for some brides, the crowd may feel smothering especially 5 minutes before the ceremony. On Christmas Eve you just might see the red sails of Roseway on the horizon as she sails towards her winter port of Gallows Bay. This year, World Ocean School’s National Historic Landmark ship, Roseway will continue the education programs at sea, begun six years ago, for the island’s schools and youth organizations. As World Ocean School wraps up another busy year that served over 2,200 students on board Roseway in Savannah, St. Croix, and Boston, they are excited to be back home in Christiansted for the start of a new year. Having just sailed from Savannah where Roseway spent six weeks working with local schools on the Savannah River, it’s time to get back out to the open ocean. On tap for this winter, World Ocean School is working on a partnership with the National Park Service to provide experiential learning opportunities for 7th grade classrooms around the maritime history of Columbus Landing. In an on-going effort to combat the growing school drop-out rates, Roseway will continue to welcome aboard students from both public and private schools in academically driven maritime programs that not only enhance classroom learning but motivate and inspire kids to want to learn. Along with the education programs, Roseway will also open her decks to locals and visitors for daily sunset sails, making this 88-year-old historic landmark ship open to the public. Sandy Point - Located on St. Croix’s West End,

this spectacular beach is part of Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge and is one the longest in the Caribbean! Park your car in the lot and take a short hike to the beach area for swimming, more hiking, and wildlife/nature photo ops. The beach is also a popular nesting site for the leatherback, hawksbill, green, and loggerhead sea turtles between April 1 and September 1 and is closed 7-days a week. Shoy Beach - A popular local’s beach located

inside the entrance to The Buccaneer. Just tell the attendant at the guard gate to your right, that you are heading down to the beach. Parking lot at the end of the road. No facilities; some shade trees. Deep, lush sand. Great swimming.

St. Croix East End Marine Park - The USVI’s

first marine park encompasses approximately 60 square miles of coastal and marine habitats on St. Croix’s East End providing a great opportunity to experience the natural wonders of the island. ARRIVAL. US citizens don’t need a passport; departing visitors need a photo ID. LOCATION. St. Croix lies 18 north latitude and 65 west longitude, about 700 miles from the equator. The Virgin Islands are part of the Antilles chain from the Bahamas down to Trinidad. St. Croix is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea. VIRGIN ISLANDERS. Virgin Islanders are a reserved but friendly people. “Good Morning,” “Good Afternoon,” and “Good Night” are welcome Crucian greetings. Everyone speaks English or a lilting version of it. CLIMATE. Year-round temperatures range in the 80s during the day, 70s most nights, with summer somewhat warmer. Easterly trade winds keep the humidity down. Most island showers are over in minutes. Residents collect rainwater from rooftops into household cisterns. Saltwater distillation plants help the supply. With water scarce, it is used sparingly. TIME. We are on Atlantic Standard in the winter, one hour ahead of Eastern Standard. During the summer, we are the same time as Eastern Daylight Savings. WHAT TO WEAR. Island dress is casual but bathing suits and men without shirts in town or grocery stores is frowned upon. Men don’t need ties or jackets; hats are great sun protectors for everyone. No adaptors needed for personal plug-ins. WE ARE HERE TO HELP YOU. The Christiansted Visitors Bureau is located in Government House on Queen Cross Street; open weekdays. TAXES. No sales tax but a 10% government tax is applied to hotel rooms. COMMUNICATIONS. St. Croix has several radio stations and three television stations; Cable TV carries the national news stations. Two newspapers are published daily; also an online daily. New York and Miami papers arrive each morning. TELEPHONE SERVICE. The local area code is 340 but you need not dial it for local numbers. Phone cards are sold at many shops throughout the island. We have local Sprint and ATT stores plus Radio Shack for any forgotten cell phone accessories. POSTAL RATES. As part of the US postal system, 1st class mail is .46 cents for the first ounce, postcards are .33 cents, international rates are $1.10 for cards and letters. See maps for post office locations. MARINE LIFE. All native plants, animals, fish (unless harvested for food), coral and shells are protected under the Indigenous Species Act. You will not be permitted to leave the territory with any plants or marine life in your possession. HOLIDAYS. We celebrate US Federal holidays and local ones as well. Christiansted National Historic Site Established in 1952, Christiansted National Historic Site was the first unit of the National Park Saystem in the US Virgin Islands. The park’s historic buidings and grounds commemorate the Danish heritage (1733-1917) of the town of Christiansted,

St. Croix, which was named in honor of the reigning King of Denmark and Norway, Christian VI. In the 1700s, Christiansted was part of a mercantile system that linked Europe,West Africa, and the Caribbean in the infamous “Triangular Trade.” Christiansted was the first town in the Lesser Antilles to be built on the grid system and to have a building code. Its distinctive colonial architecture reflects the town’s status as capital of the Danish West Indies (1755-1871); the great wealth generated by the export of cane sugar, molasses, and rum; and the influence of government building inspectors. Take two tours—“Free Gut” is the freed black neighborhood of Christiansted established by the Danish in 1748 and “Gallows Bay” is the fishing community that sustained Christiansted’s fish market for more than two centuries. This area has the deepest water close to shore in the USA! Lots of nice coral, tons of Black Durgans. Remains of upwelling pipes from a shrimp farm that Texas AM had in the 1970’s. 10. The Pennicle -- This is a small sea mount that starts in 90 feet of water. Many times Reef Sharks are seen here as well as larger fish such as Grouper and Snapper.

Let’s start a leisurely walking tour of CHRISTIANSTED at the site of the Old Scale House 1 on the harborfront, known as the Wharf. One section of the 1856 structure displays the scale used in former days to weigh barrels of rum and sugar. The other section holds a bookstore and gift shop as well as an information center about all things St. Croix. This is one of a complex of five buildings comprising the Christiansted National Historic Site, established in 1952, administered by the National Park Service.

Fort Christiansvaern 3 was the first public building to be started by the Danes after the island was purchased from France in 1733. It is built of Danish yellow brick and was completed in 1749 and later expanded. Its present appearance reflects the 1830’s period. Furnishings from that era are on display; also an exhibit on local military history. At the entrance admission tickets to the Fort and Steeple Building are sold ($3) and brochures available.

Open Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm, weekends 9 am to 5 pm. 2 hour parking available on site. The Steeple Building 4 across Hospital Street, formerly the Lutheran Church and dates from 1753. It houses a display documenting aspects of the religious history of St. Croix. Ask for opening hours at the Fort. Across Company Street lies the onetime Danish West India & Guinea Company Warehouse 5 , built in 1749. In its courtyard, slave auctions were formerly held. Government House 6 on King Street was in part the former home of a Danish merchant. That section dates from 1749; another section, the previous town house of a wealthy Danish plantation owner, was joined to it in 1826, together becoming the seat of the Danish West Indies government. The grand staircase and portico were added in 1830, as was the impressive ballroom/reception hall on the second floor by Governor General Peter von Scholten, who had his office and official residence here. The former are open to the public (entrance at mid-building on King Street). The Virgin Islands Tourism office (open weekdays only) is downstairs fronting the Lutheran Church. The Lutheran Church 7 across Queen Cross Street on King Street, was originally the Dutch Reformed Church, built in the 1740’s and transferred to the Lutherans in 1831, who brought the furnishings here from the Steeple Building. Later, the steeple was added. Walking up Queen Cross Street to Company Street takes you to Apothecary Hall 8 on the left corner, which holds both the tiny Apothecary Museum on Queen Cross Street, open anytime, and in the courtyard the Archaeological Museum, open only Saturdays 10 am-2 pm. Nearby on Company Street is the Old Market 9 , laid out in the original town plan from 1735, and still being used. The well dates from 1863. CATCH A FREE JAZZ CONCERT AT THE FREDERIKSTED BANDSTAND DEC 20 & JAN 17 Getting West St. Croix’ West End offers beautiful sandy, calm beaches, great snorkeling and wreck or pier diving, spectacular sunsets, and the lush subtropical forest. You can reach Frederiksted with its quaint, historic town architecture in several ways. The four-lane Melvin Evans Highway is your speediest route, if you are coming from the east. Most drivers take Queen Mary Highway (Centerline Road), which also takes you to the St. George Village Botanical Garden, the Cruzan Rum Factory, and Whim Plantation Museum, all just off the Queen Mary Highway.

Governor General Peter von Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the enslaved population in the Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848, from adjacent Buddhoe Park. The park contains a bronze bust of the renowned slave rebellion leader. The Oscar E. Henry Customs House was built in the 1800’s. The building is undergoing renovations. The Visitors’ Bureau, normally located here, has been temporarily moved to an upstairs location in the courtyard of a nearby building on Strand Street. The Freedom Fountain facing the pier was installed for the Emancipation 150th anniversary celebration. In a historic light blue building down a block is the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts. After severe damage during a labor insurrection in 1878, the town was rebuilt in Victorian style. Victoria House on Strand Street and Apothecary Hall on King Cross Street between King and Queen Streets preserve the Frederiksted architecture of that time. Frederiksted is home to a number of historic churches, including St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Holy Trinity Lutheran Chruch, Friedensberg Moravian Church, and St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. The newly restored Old Danish School on Hospital Street and Market Street is a handsome building. At Strand and Queen Cross Streets is the Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library, built in 1803. The Market Place is still in use today, as it was in 1751 at the founding of Frederiksted. There are ATMs at the Scotiabank and First Bank locations on Strand Street. After hours, swipe your card at the door to get inside. The Frederiksted waterfront is home to Sunset Jazz concerts, held the third Friday of the month from 5:30 to 8 p.m.. Admission is free to the public. A public beach with showers and bathrooms is next to Fort Frederik.

Queen Cross St

Touring Frederiksted Your tour of Frederiksted begins at Fort Frederik by the cruise ship pier and newly revitalized waterfront. Construction on the Fort began in 1752 and was completed in 1760. Featuring a museum with several permanent exhibits and an art gallery, it is open weekdays from 8:30 am to 4 p.m. There is a small admission charge.

Take Creque Dam Road (Route 58) through scenic valleys and under towering trees. This road is passable by car, but narrow and a bit rough. The rainforest can be explored by car, 4 WD (unpaved West Scenic Road can be impassable after heavy rains) or on horseback. Among area attractions are the Lawaetz Family Museum and lovely gardens at Estate Little La Grange, the impressive Estate Mt. Washington ruins, the nearby giant baobab trees at Butler Bay, and the infamous beer-drinking pigs!

You can also travel west through the rainforest on Route 76, Mahogany Road (which farther east is Route 72, Midland Road). If you are a bit adventurous, turn off on 765 or 763 (see signs for Creque Dam Farm and Mt. Victory Camp, both worth a visit)

North of town are several wonderful beaches and eateries where you can toast the famous Green Flash at sunset. You can pick up Route 63 along the water north of the Fort, or if you want to bypass the town when coming from the Queen Mary Highway, take the La Grange Road, Route 63, by turning rights just after Whim Museum.

From Queen Mary Highway, turn right at the traffic light at Hannah’s Rest. From the end of Melvin Evans Highway, turn right and continue north through the traffic light. Turn left at the Post Office (this is Fisher Street). Frederiksted town is rebounding, thanks to a recent $14 million revitalization project. To get to Strand Street, Fort Frederik and the beautifully landscaped waterfront and the Pier, turn right just before the fishermen’s boat ramp and market shed at the end of Fisher Street. This is a great starting point for a walking tour of the town with its many historic buildings.

Hough of the Caribbean Research Institute of the College of the Virgin Islands, 1967, for the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts. A HERITAGE IN THE MAKING Life can only be understood backward but it must be lived forward. Kierkegaard Today, a generation is growing up, living in space, finding form, creating style and getting messages from the rest of the world. How will that space look? Who will help them find form? What style will they create? Which messages will get through? The generations, already grown, are making that heritage for them every day. Sensitive or destructive, passive or active, the adult world is making the choices and creating the environment.

It is a time to test the limits of sensation, endurance, skill. It is a “no comment” time. Most of all – it is a time when there still is time.

--We need better opportunities for native entertainers to work on a full time professional basis… --There is no place to perform or rehearse… --we need a place...

“It seems to me,” said the Oldest Woman Around, “that there is altogether too much fuss made about Art.”

Certain threads of similarity ran through their comments, but each had his own emphasis. Let them speak for themselves and let the ones who have lived in the Islands the longest have the most to say. The statements that follow are excerpts from comments generously expressed on returned questionnaires ranging from lifetime residents down to those who have lived in the Virgin Islands more than ten years; there are two exceptions to allow shorter term residents a word. Remarks about councils refer to a question asked about local councils in each community.

--A council would give our group and other native groups the support and chance to broaden our musical talents on the Virgin Islands as well as an international basis…

The Council is pleased to report that they did. In its recent survey of arts resources in the Virgin Islands, more than a hundred painters, musicians, writers and specialists in other arts or crafts gave their cooperation.

“It is all fuss and rot,” she said firmly and went out into the yard where she began to model some clay, kneading and pommeling it with all her feelings. She formed it into a loaf of bread, colored it a golden brown and baked it.

--This island has an art potential…

--As an arranger I am definitely limited by the lack of musical organizations which read music professionally and are capable of performing a variety of musical forms…

In the fabric of living in the Virgin Islands today, what place do the arts have? That is the question the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts set out to answer. This means asking the artists living in the three islands. This means a questionnaire. Would they respond?

“Not at all,” said the Thin Man, his pale skin gleaming with pure thoughts. “Art is All. It brings people together. It elevates the masses. It teaches little children to reach for beauty. It—“

--If the arts council has a broad enough base and doesn’t become the exclusive pet of a few it could have immense effect…

--My interest in the arts council is not ‘what can it do for me’ but what can it do for other artists who have not had the opportunities I have had… --There has been quite a lot of progress made in the last few years in the cultural education of young people in the Virgin Islands… The Mongoose and the Dog were watching moving things. The Mongoose turned away. “Give me something more stable. More content, More form. I want something I can keep and look at every day.” The Dog chased the movement, the grass, the leaves and some little white papers that fluttered. “Let me go where the action is,” he said and executed a small chase around his tail. The Cat, who had been watching the Dog, stood up and stretched. “It’s all right for a beginning, but without discipline, without training, without development – it just isn’t ART.”
