Good Day and welcome to the United States Virgin Islands! Our people welcome you. We are a unique place to visit with a variety of islands: St. Croix, St. Thomas, St. John, Water Island and dozens of small cays and islets. Each island is unique. Each offers distinct and memorable experiences. St. Croix is our largest island and we invite you to discover our historic towns; Christiansted and Frederiksted and discover the quaint shops and Danish Architecture. St Croix has wide open spaces, magnificent vistas and a unique culture. St. John is almost all National Park and perfectly preserved. It has sparkling turquoise bays and long, lazy beaches. Enjoy the relaxing atmosphere. St Thomas is the shopping center of the Caribbean with duty free shopping and a vibrant nightlife. Charlotte Amalie is the capital city of the United States Virgin Islands with its huge natural harbor, bustling port and vistas that will take your breath away. Try our underwater delights, bask on a beach, soak up some sunshine, sail into sunset or hike the trails. You can see why we call this "America’s Paradise." As the Governor of the United States Virgin Islands, I assure you that we will do everything possible to make your stay enjoyable. Our people are warm and friendly. We will welcome you in conversation. Don’t hesitate to ask people for directions or shopping tips. Our people are eager to help you enjoy your visit. I extend to you my warmest greetings and hope you enjoy your vacation in the United States Virgin Islands, this year celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Transfer Day! Sincerely, Kenneth Mapp Governor

Centennial Transfer Day Re-Cap by Apple Gidley

American for 100 Years!

Each year, on Transfer Day, the proceedings are interspersed with a naturalization ceremony when new citizens swear allegiance to their new country. This year 20 men and women from eight countries became Americans to the sound of children’s laughter as they rolled down the slope from the fort – their frivolity lending an air of joyful abandon to the occasion. Further proof the US is founded on the willingness of foreigners to renounce their birth countries and apply their skills to enriching their new country.

It was a good day. An easterly breeze ruffled whitecaps offshore and flowery hats onshore as men, women and a smattering of children watched marching bands and majorettes parade past the bedecked dais filled with local and international worthies. Apple Gidley. Expectation hovered. Said dignitaries made their way to a large marquee under which islanders, long-time residents, newbies like me, tourists and a contingent of Danish visitors wafted programs back and forth moving air along the rows. Would Denmark apologize for past indignities? For the human tragedy of the transatlantic slave trade? Would the mainland listen to entreaties by islanders for full US citizenship allowed a vote in presidential elections?

Parade flags.

Then came the speech of the day – spoken eloquently in a language not his own – by the Danish Prime Minister, The Honorable Lars Løkke Rasmussen. He began by saying a special bond of friendship existed between the Virgin Islands and Denmark, “a touch of common destiny that time cannot erase.”

Chatter along the lines was hopeful. Cheerful. Who doesn’t like a parade, the promise of promises – even if they are later unfulfilled, the anticipation of revelry, jazz and fireworks? Meanwhile steel pans from a local elementary school and the Copenhagen Brass Ensemble took turns in keeping the masses entertained. A wreath was floated off the Boardwalk in memory of ancestors and, in particular, Alberta Viola Roberts, a girl taken from her family and transported to Copenhagen at the age of four to be displayed in the Tivoli Gardens – an oddity to be ogled. As fate would have it, she was buried in that cold and distant land on 31st March, 1917 – the day Denmark sold the Danish West Indies to the United States of America for 25 million dollars in gold.

ics, All Hail the Virgin Islands, Em’ralds of the Sea, filtering around the tent in a swirl of pride, and hope.

The brass band struck up Der er et Yndigtland and voices from the Danish contingent proudly sang their national anthem as the dannebrog slid down Fort Christiansvaern’s flagpole to be replaced by the fluttering Stars and Stripes. Then came the Star Spangled Banner, followed by the Virgin Islands March, written by Alton Adams in 1920. The lyr-

An invocation, then opening remarks by Sonia Jacobs Dow who commented that islanders were citizens of nowhere from 1917 – 1927 when the newly-acquired islands were under naval administration. We were exhorted to remember “blood, sweat and tears are inextricably mixed in this soil” and that, “this celebration is more than a moment”.

After the temporary court was adjourned, politicians returned to the lectern. The Honorable Stacey E. Plaskett carried on the theme of disenfranchisement, commenting that whilst the purchase of the Danish West Indies was the most costly land purchase in US history, no providence was made for the islanders in the document – ensuring they became essentially “a marooned people.”

While not apologizing for bygone atrocities, Prime Minister Rasmussen did acknowledge them saying, “There is no justification for the exploitation of men, women and children under the Danish flag.” He said the term ‘dreamer,’ as David Hamilton Jackson was called by a Danish governor, was in all likelihood meant as an insult, but that in today’s world it would considered an honor. We were reminded, “We must acknowledge what happened in the past but we can’t undo the past – what we can do is look to the future.” It was a smooth transition to the announcement of a 5-year scholarship program to be given at the University of the Virgin Islands. It is students who “must take destiny into their own hands,” Rasmussen said. Continued on page 59. June / July 2017 • Page 3

Some of you may remember the chosen property, on Hospital Street, as the old “Captain Weeks” Seafood Restaurant, a ruin now located across the street from Ft. Christiansvaern and its parking lot. “This undertaking is SEDI’s primary initiative in the roll-out and implementation of its major JumpStart Tourism Economic Development Initiative,” says Managing Director Anthony Weeks. “Captain Weeks” just happens to be my grandfather and I’m honored to be working with the same historic building that he had.” SEDI is a macroeconomic and public policy thinktank group, created by the 2007 St. Croix Economic Summit. This project was introduced at a Press Conference at the site on March 30, 2017.

The specials are over the top — you just won’t know what to order in this little spot. As hard as you try, you might never find as interesting a place as this to dine — from the food, to the wine, to the magic of this place and even to your waiter’s happy little face. People travel from one place to the next but always return and say Savant is the best. Living within walking distance of it now, I want to continue to do what I can to enhance the nightlife in Frederiksted,” Greg says. “Being involved in business management for the last 17 years and previously owning Mahogany by the Sea restaurant, I feel like I am ready to take on this new venture.” A native son born on St. Croix, Chef and part owner Lamar Bough studied and worked in the restaurant industry in the Maryland area, gaining great exposure from top chefs. He was a head sous chef at Renaissance Carambola Resort before coming to Ciboné. Greg describes his menu as “eclectic, French, Mediterranean, and ‘Crucian Fusion.’ It changes daily, based on what the market has in fresh produce, meats or seafood. Farm-to-table, and fresh, wild-caught fish-to-table! We are also “Reef Responsible.” (see story Pg 46). Located in the old Limetree Courtyard on King Street, Ciboné is open Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday for Dinner, 6 – 10 pm; Friday and Saturday, Tapas and live jazz, 10 pm - midnight. Closed Tuesday and Thursday. Like us on Facebook and keep up with schedule changes (Lunch coming soon) and daily offerings. Greg, who is an Environmental Planner at the Department of Planning and Natural Resources during the day, plans future Ciboné Wine Pairings, Craft Cocktail Guest Artists (like the one coming up in June for Rotary East), catering, take out, parties, and exclusive events.

Island Art

CHECK EVENTS CALENDAR FOR ALL ART SHOWS IN JUNE & JULY!

Meet Cover Artist Laurie Ingersoll “Creating art is a passion for me whether it be acrylic on canvas, plein air water colors or pencil illustrations for my children’s books. I have doodled and drawn as long as I can remember and I am happiest while creating. A keen Laurie Ingersoll. observer of the world around me, I have always been fascinated with and delighted by the wonders of nature. My art is a celebration of that wonder, utilizing form, color and rhythm to reflect my enthusiasm and joy. I learn something new from each painting as it evolves. I am on a creative journey of endless possibilities. I like to experiment with a variety of styles from carefully constructed geometrics to loose, organic shapes depending on my mood and subject matter. The color is the most important element for me. I prefer rich, pure, exuberant pigments which visually vibrate and come to life when placed strategically in proximity of one another. My background is in the sciences rather than the arts, I was a bio-chemistry major with a love of art. There is surprising synergy between the two disciplines and I am often reminded of their harmony. I am a colorist in that I am viscerally affected by colors and hues and scientifically can relate to their energy levels and vibrations. I take Color Theory and play with it, experimenting with various painting techniques to see how the pure, vibrant colors interact and evolve. Being drawn to rich, pure, exuberant pigments, I have long been intrigued by the Fauve movement of the early 1900s when painters like Matisse, Seurat and Cezanne turned Modern Art on its head with bold experiments in color. After raising three daughters, I taught at a wonderful Montessori school outside of Boston for many years and began to give art classes after school. I love the unself-conscious way children create art. It inspired me to become more experimental with my own art. I also have used art to help troubled students for whom words were elusive. I was trained in Expressive Art Therapy and have used it with many types of groups from teens at risk to breast cancer Page 36 • June / July 2017

survivors. It is a lovely reminder of the healing power of art and the neuroscience which shows creativity improves brain function.

Book covers.

I have lived many places, including Asia, but I moved down to St. Croix in 2013 to realize the dream of an island life while working on my paintings and books. I saw the need for well-illustrated, fun, engaging books to encourage early readers. I completed that series about a mouse named Moose and a cat named Mouse and have now added an autistic bird named Otis to the newest book. I also have a series of fairy books which are a big hit, especially in England. The books come to me almost fully formed and rhyming. It is delightful to be able to spend my days surrounded by whimsical animals and fairies and to bring them to life. They seem to appeal to the child in all of us! I find inspiration everywhere I look and am delighted by the many artists on St. Croix. I was a founding member, then president, of the Artists Guild of St. Croix and have had the opportunity to paint with and learn from many terrifically talented people. The STX community is so welcoming and encouraging to new artists. It is a special creative community, growing every day. My newest endeavor is making inroads in the Florida art community having just relocated to the Orlando area. This will enable me to grow my art business as well as get involved with local schools to share my books and encourage youngsters to read, write, and create. I will never truly give up my St. Croix roots; this special island is now an integral part of me and my art.

People often remark that my paintings make them happy. I hope that my vibrant, full-of-life art invites the viewer to look at subjects in a new light and to share my enthusiasm for the wonders around us all. My art is presently available at the Blue Mutt and Top Hat Gallery and L’Etoile Bar above the gallery. It is in collections in Houston, NYC, Chicago, LA, and Boston and will be available online on my new website: Laurieingersollart. com. Recent works are featured on Instagram: #laurie.ingersoll.art, Facebook and Twitter. My books are available on Amazon and at laurieingersollbooks.com.”

I

Summer Carries Different Significance in Denmark — by Nina York n all parts of the Northern Hemisphere, the summer months of June and July bring joy, not least in Denmark, where the long and dark winter months are temporarily forgotten and a passionate sun-worship is displayed by almost everyone. When Danes visit our islands they are startled by the intensity of our sun rays; those not prepared with sunscreen will pay a price of nasty burns to the exposed body parts. In Denmark, summers are brief and often marred by rainy weather, so especially if the sunlight plays a hiding game, Nordic Sunbather. many Danes, despite often having access to a summer cottage near a beach (albeit with a water temperature of max 65º Fahrenheit), opt for a trip to warmer and sunnier areas. The travel industry in Denmark is extensive and offers many escapes to all corners of the world. One major reason for this travel fever is the enviable vacation time of up to six weeks given to the majority of working Danes. This often results in many taking as many as three vacations a year, or even more mini-vacations. But don’t start packing your suitcase to move to Denmark. As foreigners, Americans are welcome as visitors, but not as residents. Even a foreigner married to a Dane meets numerous obstacles, particularly when it comes to finding work. A heavy bureaucracy is at work to protect jobs for Danes, which has resulted in a high employment ra-

tio and an active, healthy business and industry sector. Recent refugee migrations have created serious tensions there as in many northern European countries, with no easy solution at hand. Consider what our residents have here. No dark and cold winters. We are in a travel destination of choice for over a million visitors, thanks to our beautiful scenery, clear seas and spectacular diving sites, impressive historical architecture and balmy climate and pleasant breezes, available to us all year round. Culture and entertainment abound, and people are friendly. For those of us who live here, if we added up weekends and our numerous local and national holidays, the count might approach the six weeks of vacation, and we would have saved the travel cost and trouble. This year, Denmark hosts a different Centennial from the one being commemorated here recognizing 100 years since the Transfer of the Danish West Indies to the United States to become the U.S. Virgin Islands. An organization called the Danish West Indian Society was founded by soldiers and officials formerly stationed here; its membership now comprises hundreds with friendship links to our islands. Their counterpart here, the Friends of Denmark, have been invited to join in the celebration, in mid-June; everyone is hoping that the tropical visitors will bring the best possible weather along with them.

Island Weddings MARRY ME ON ST. CROIX!

Budgets

The very word strikes fear in the hearts of every bride ever known. Budgets are not something you think about before you begin planning a wedding yet, words like ‘budget’ and ‘reality’ become prevalent themes in many conversations, once “she said yes!!!” Let’s face it, planning a wedding is like planning an un-planned medical expense without insurance. Like surprising medical news, with engagements—everyone suspected it might happen, but were not sure when it would, and now that it has are asking “how are we going to pay for it?” Never fear! You can pull off a successful wedding with even the smallest of budgets! No matter the size, a budget must be created. Grooms, despite the pressures you may feel to propose, think about where you and your future bride are financially before you pop the question because, weddings can be expensive. Also, when you ask your brides’ parents for her hand (hint, hint), you can broach this conversation with them at that time. Ok, now that you have all your finances together, make a list of what you want your day to look like; circle the ‘must haves’ and list them in order of importance. For me it was, Autumn, photography, lighting, food, family attendance. Your top five will dictate where your budget will go, who your vendors are, how many guests you can afford, etc. You will re-chart your course several times so be open and have patience; this is part of the fun! If you realize early on that it is impossible to make everyone happy, tough decisions become easier. Finally, if you cannot afford to outfit your wedding with a crew of professional vendors, utilize your resources. Who do you know with skills necessary to your wedding’s success? You will be surprised by what you find! Make room in your budget for ‘friendly helpers’ and pay them fairly, even if they insist it’s not necessary. It’s not only a kind gesture, but the right thing to do.

St. Croix! The food capital of the Caribbean is also home to the “fresh and local” movement. And, The Nature Conservancy and partners are working to insure that the seafood that we enjoy today will be as much a part of our culture tomorrow. I’d like to introduce you to the Reef Responsible Sustainable Seafood Initiative. The Reef Responsible Initiative was designed to help create a sustainable seafood industry in the US Virgin Islands. TNC and partner organizations developed outreach materials and have provided trainings to local restaurants on St. Croix. These restaurants received information on seasonal closures, size restrictions, and the “Good Choice, Go Slow, and Don’t Eat” seafood list, which were all developed based on current fishery regulations and the best available science. Restaurants that have participated in Reef Responsible training are then invited to become members of the Reef Responsible Initiative, are branded as a Reef Responsible Participating Restaurant, and are celebrated for their commitment towards supporting and helping to improve our local fishery. Not only important for our fishery, this initiative will also help to improve the health of our coral reefs. Reefs across the Caribbean have been impacted by a number of natural and man-made stressors. Climate change has been the biggest global issue over the last few decades. However, more local threats like run-off and the excessive harvest of herbivorous fishes (parrotfishes, doctorfish, etc.) have caused many Caribbean reefs to disappear and/or lose their function. Herbivorous fishes are similar to long-spined urchins in that they remove algae from reefs—providing space for corals to inhabit. Many of our reefs today are dominated by algae, not corals. We can make a difference! We believe that we can improve our reefs ability to persist through climate change if we can reduce or eliminate local, man-made stressors to our reefs, while actively restoring them. Coral reefs are an important, biodiverse, marine habitat that benefit people in more ways than one. Reefs defend our coastlines and they are a big part of the cultural heritage of many islanders. They are also the main reason many tourists visit our beautiful islands (next to our warm personalities, gorgeous smiles, and amazing food scene).

By making conscious decisions about the seafood that we catch, purchase, prepare, and serve we can all become “reefsponsible” and can, together, improve the health of our coral reefs and ensure that the seafood that we enjoy today may also be enjoyed for generations to come. How can you help? Support our local commercial fishers, purchase seafood when in season or within the correct size restrictions, and support our Reef Responsible Participating Restaurants— Savant, Dashi, Café Christine, Twin City Coffee House, The Mermaid at Buccaneer, The Terrace at Buccaneer, balter, Baked Café, Above the Cliff, Empress Fresh Foods, The Galleon, Rhythms at Rainbow, Ital in Paradise, Galangal, La Reine Chicken Shack, Zion Modern Kitchen, Un Amore, J & V Diner, Kaza House, eat @ Cane Bay, BES Craft Cocktail Lounge, Waves at Cane Bay, Misfit Island Munchies, Mathayom/St. John Catering, Cast Iron Pot, and Ciboné. The Reef Responsible Initiative was developed through a cooperative agreement between The Nature Conservancy’s US Virgin Islands Program and NOAA’s Coral Reef Conservation Program with local partners (DPNR Division of Fish and Wildlife, NOAA Fisheries, UVI Virgin Islands Marine Advisory Service, and St. Croix Reef Jam). For more information about the Reef Responsible Sustainable Seafood Initiative, visit www.reefconnect.org or like us on facebook (www.facebook.com/ reefsponsible). Restaurants interested in joining the initiative can contact Kemit-Amon Lewis at The Nature Conservancy (340) 718-5575 or klewis@tnc.org.

All beaches in the U.S. Virgin Islands are open to the public, although access through private property and hotels may have restrictions. Buck Island Reef National Monument -

See the first designated underwater National Park; the first National Park whose primary designation was to protect a coral reef system. Celebrating 51 years! Two beaches, two picnic areas. Great snorkeling, shade, hiking trail, limited facilities. Located 7 miles East of Christiansted and reached by authorized National Park concessionaires. See Watersports section for more information on getting there.

Cane Bay - On St. Croix’s Northshore,

this is a long, sandy beach with shade and great snorkeling off the reefs near shore; relatively shallow and nice for swimming. Dive shop, kayaking, hotels, beach bars, and restaurants nearby.

Columbus Landing - The site of the 1493

landing of Columbus at Salt River. Accessed by the road to the left of Salt River Marina. Minimal facilities. Managed by the Territorial State Historic Preservation Office (DPNR), and is within the boundaries of the National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve. Great view of Salt River from the Visitor’s Center. Call for hours, 340-773-1460.

Cramer Park - Just before Pt. Udall, on St. Croix’s East End, is a beautiful long, deep public beach with bathrooms, changing rooms, and picnic tables. TENNIS

We love tennis on St. Croix! Some courts are equipped for night play.

Rainbow Beach - North of Frederiksted is

this lively beach with bar and restaurant plus watersports and volleyball. Live music on Sunday afternoons. Great for swimming!

Reef Beach – A nice slip-of-a-beach across the

street from the Reef Condos on the East End. With a very gradual decline, the beach is perfect for getting on and off your windsurfer or for swimming with small children. Restaurants and golf nearby.

Sandy Point - Located on St. Croix’s West End, this spectacular beach is part of Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge and is one the longest in the Caribbean! Park your car in the lot and take a short hike to the beach area for swimming, more hiking, and wildlife/nature photo ops. The beach is also a popular nesting site for the leatherback, hawksbill, green, and loggerhead sea turtles between April 1 and September 1 and is closed 7-days a week. Beach access is however open the rest of the year on weekends only, Saturday and Sunday, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. For info call the US Fish & Wildlife Service at 340-773-4554. Parking lot at the end of the road. No facilities; some shade trees. Deep, lush sand. Great swimming. St. Croix East End Marine Park - The USVI’s first marine park encompasses approximately 60 square miles of coastal and marine habitats on St. Croix’s East End, providing a great opportunity to experience the natural wonders of the island. Managed by the Virgin Islands’ Division of Coastal Zone Management, under the Department of Planning and Natural Resources (DPNR). The Virgin Islands are part of the Antilles chain from the Bahamas down to Trinidad. St. Croix is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea. VIRGIN ISLANDERS. Virgin Islanders are a reserved but friendly people. “Good Morning,” “Good Afternoon,” and “Good Night” are welcome Crucian greetings. Everyone speaks English or a lilting version of it. CLIMATE. Year-round temperatures range in the 80s during the day, 70s most nights, with summer somewhat warmer. Easterly trade winds keep the humidity down. Most island showers are over in minutes. Residents collect rainwater from rooftops into household cisterns. Saltwater distillation plants help the supply. With water scarce, it is used sparingly. TIME. We are on Atlantic Standard in the winter, one hour ahead of Eastern Standard. During the summer, we are the same time as Eastern Daylight Savings. WHAT TO WEAR. Island dress is casual but bathing suits and men without shirts in town or grocery stores is frowned upon. Men don’t need ties or jackets; hats are great sun protectors for everyone. MARINE LIFE. All native plants, animals, fish (unless harvested for food), coral and shells are protected under the Indigenous Species Act. You will not be permitted to leave the territory with any plants or marine life in your possession. HOLIDAYS. We celebrate US Federal holidays and local ones as well. Always Remember To Drive Left! Whether renting a car or crossing the street, it is vital to remember that traffic in the USVI flows from the left side of the road. St. Croix is 28 miles in length and 7 miles at the widest point with two major towns—Christiansted at the center on the north shore and Frederiksted at the west end. The Caribbean Sea which surrounds the island is always there to guide you along the roads that wind around the coast. Car rental agencies have a variety of vehicles available from sporty jeeps to roomy air-conditioned sedans, vans, and SUVs. The average price usually includes unlimited mileage but you fill the tank upon return! Both US and other driver’s licenses are recognized. The driver and front seat passenger are required by law to use seat belts and cell phone talking or texting is not allowed. Parking in Christiansted is limited and 2-hour parking on parts of Company and Queen Cross Streets is enforced. Look for the signs. There is daytime parking in the National Park Service lot near Ft. Christiansvaern, until 4:30 pm, and a public lot with fees on Strand and King Cross Street. Major roads are asphalt and usually well maintained. The Melvin H. Evans Highway is the only 4-lane, divided highway running from mid-island west to within 1 mile of Frederiksted. The speed limit is 55. In other areas, the 35 mph limit applies; in town, 20 mph unless otherwise posted. Let our Attractions & Tours pages (34 & 35) and our St. Croix Road Map (54 & 55) and town maps (56-58) help you plan your island tour!

Rejsemål St. Croix PRAKTISKE OPLYSNINGER OM US VIRGIN ISLANDS

Island Worship The history of our island is mirrored in its old church structures, many of which have recently been restored. The Moravian brethren, arriving here in the 1730s from Saxony in today’s Germany, founded their mission to bring Christianity to the enslaved part of the population. The historic Anglican (Episcopalian) churches built in Gothic style include St. John’s in Christiansted and, in Frederiksted, the beautifully restored St. Paul’s church. The large number of Irish settlers, along with Englishmen and Hispanics, have contributed to the presence of the Catholic church; Holy Cross in Christiansted is the oldest in the Virgin Islands. The Danish rule of the island from 1733 to 1917 brought the Lutheran church, which still plays a large role here. Lord God of Sabaoth in Christiansted occupies the former Dutch Reformed Church; Holy Trinity in Frederiksted was built shortly after the town was founded. The Dutch Reformed church (Presbyterian) now has a new mid-island home. These are just a few of the many (over 150) churches on St. Croix, from SeventhDay Adventist to Methodist, Baptist, Church of God, and many more. Church attendance and activities are important to a large part of our population; visitors are always welcome at services, often a high point in their island experience. Many other faiths offer places of worship—a Jewish synagogue, a Hindu temple, and a Moslem mosque, to name a few. An easy-to-follow guide is actually the yellow pages of our local phone book beginning on Page 54. w w w.stcroix thisweek.com

Befolkningen. Virgin Islands befolkning er venlig men tilbageholdende. Man hilser gerne med “Good morning”, “Good Afternoon” og “Good Night.” Tider. Her som alle vegne, vær forsigtig.

Telefon. Se by- og økortene for at finde postkontorerne. Helligdage. Her fejrer man amerikanske helligdage foruden en hel del lokale. St. Croix Dive Sites 11.

Sixth in a series of dive site descriptions.

The Pavillions – Lots of coral and sponge, very colorful dive. Sting Rays in sand on top of wall and occasional school of Spade Fish. Lobster and crabs, and tons of reef fish call this home. 12. The famous “Wall” at Cane Bay – Most popular beach dive on St. Croix, a bit of a swim north from the beach puts you in 3,000 feet of water. Great dive for beginners, lots of coral heads in shallow water and then the dramic drop for the certified divers.

This National Park Commemorates Our Danish Heritage (1733-1917).

CHRISTIANSTED WALKING TOUR Let’s start a leisurely walking tour of CHRISTIANSTED at the site of the Old Scale House 1 on the harborfront, known as the Wharf. One section of the 1856 structure displays the scale used in former days to weigh barrels of rum and sugar. The other section holds a bookstore and gift shop as well as an information center about all things St. Croix. This is one of a complex of five buildings comprising the Christiansted National Historic Site, established in 1952, administered by the National Park Service.

Fort Christiansvaern 3 was the first public building to be started by the Danes after the island was purchased from France in 1733. It is built of Danish yellow brick and was completed in 1749 and later expanded. Its present appearance reflects the 1830’s period. The exhibit rooms have shifting exhibits of local relevance. See Page 14 for current exhibits. Admission tickets are sold at the entrance ($3); Senior passes are accepted. Open every day from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm which also coincides with the hours of the adjacent Fort Parking Lot whose hours are strictly enforced. Brochures for all three parks available. The Steeple Building 4 across Hospital Street, formerly the Lutheran Church dates from 1753. This site, on the Walking Tour, is currently closed for renovation. Across Company Street lies the onetime Danish West India & Guinea Company Warehouse 5 , built in 1749. In its courtyard, slave auctions were formerly held. NPS 2nd Thursday Lectures held here.

Originally, Government House 6 on King Street, was built as a home for a Danish merchant. That section dates from 1749; another section, the previous town house of a wealthy Danish plantation owner, was joined to it in 1826, together becoming the seat of the Danish West Indies government. The grand staircase and portico were added in 1830, as was the impressive ballroom/reception hall on the second floor by Governor General Peter von Scholten, who had his office and official residence here. The former are open to the public (entrance at mid-building on King Street). The Lutheran Church 7 across Queen Cross Street on King Street, was originally the Dutch Reformed Church, built in the 1740’s and transferred to the Lutherans in 1831, who brought the furnishings here from the Steeple Building. Later, the steeple was added. Walking up Queen Cross Street to Company Street takes you to Apothecary Hall 8 on the left corner, which holds both the tiny Apothecary Museum on Queen Cross Street, open anytime, and in the courtyard the Archaeological Museum, open only Saturdays 10 am-2 pm. Nearby on Company Street is the Old Market 9 , laid out in the original town plan from 1735, and still being used. The well dates from 1863. On this square you will also find the downtown Post Office.

Christiansted National Historic Site Established in 1952, Christiansted National Historic Site was the first unit of the National Park Saystem in the US Virgin Islands. The park’s historic buidings and grounds commemorate the Danish heritage (1733-1917) of the town of Christiansted, St. Croix, which was named in honor of the reigning King of Denmark and Norway, Christian VI. In the 1700s, Christiansted was part of a mercantile system that linked Europe,West Africa, and the Caribbean in the infamous “Triangular Trade.” Christiansted was the first town in the Lesser Antilles to be built on the grid system and to have a building code. Its distinctive colonial architecture reflects the town’s status as capital of the Danish West Indies (1755-1871); the great wealth generated by the export of cane sugar, molasses, and rum; and the influence of government building inspectors. Governor General Peter von Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the enslaved population in the Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848, from adjacent Buddhoe Park 2. The park contains a bronze bust of the renowned slave rebellion leader. The Oscar E. Henry Customs House 3 was built in the 1800s. The Freedom Fountain 4, facing the pier, was installed for the Emancipation 150th Anniversary Celebration. 63 After severe damage during a labor insurrection in 1878, the town was rebuilt in Victorian style. Victoria House 5, on Strand Street, and Apothecary Hall 6, on King Cross Street between King and Queen Streets, preserve the Frederksted architecture of that time. The Visitor’s Bureau 7, is located upstairs on Strand Street above the Frederiksted Mall and next door to the historic light blue building housing the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts 8. Frederiksted is home to a number of historic churches, including St. Paul’s Episcopal Church 9, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church 10, Friedensberg Moravian Church 11, and St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church 12. The newly restored Old Danish School 13, on Hospital Street and Market Street, is a handsome building. At Strand and Queen Cross Streets is the Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library 14, built in 1803. The Market Place 15, is still in use today, as it was in 1751 at the founding of Frederiksted.

Centennial Transfer Day Re-Cap

American for 100 Years!

T

Continued from page 3. he Prime Minister’s words were in stark contrast, both in content and delivery, to those uttered by the senior US representative, Secretary of The Interior Ryan Zinke. His speech was brief and uninformative as was the letter he read from President Trump, which gave little credence to the concerns of Virgin Islanders - that of full-voting rights for citizens, amongst other things. The USVI, America’s Caribbean, was offered little of hope for improvement.

Kenneth E Mapp, Governor of the Virgin Islands, rounded out the official celebrations by commenting that, “Living in the past has little value on our future. But knowing our past is important to our future.” Black limousines drove dignitaries away – the program to be repeated on St Thomas at 2pm. Meanwhile on St Croix the crowds dispersed along the Boardwalk, back to cars parked haphazardly on our street, or to local watering holes. To reconvene as the sun set in a tickle of pink

Fireworks.

and mauve over masts bobbing in Christiansted Harbor, and the sounds of Eddie Russell and his jazz band. And then the boom, the hiss, the thrill of the sky dissolving in a shower of sparkling colors as fireworks saluted 100 years of being American!

A transient life has seen Apple Gidley live in countries as diverse as Papua New Guinea and Thailand, or Equatorial Guinea and the USA, and another eight in between. Her memoir, Expat Life Slice by Slice, tells of the highs and lows of that nomadic life. She currently divides her time between Houston, Texas and St Croix, USVI. Her travel articles are filled with color, and spiced with subtleties that take the arm-chairtraveller to that country, or make the experienced traveller add it to their list. She draws on her experiences for her pieces on expatriate living, which offer down-to-earth observations and encouragement to those about to embark on the trail, or who already live the life.

Mango Melee & Tropical Fruit Festival Sunday, July 9, 12 noon – 6 pm Mango. Juicy, edible stone fruit belonging to the cashew family. Cultivated in South Asia for thousands of years, it began in East Africa by the 10th century CE. Cultivation came later to Brazil, Bermuda, Mexico, and the West Indies where the right climate allows its growth. Melee. Rumpus, commotion, rukus, jumble, free-for-all, encounter, grouping, jumble. Its mango season, and the St. George Village Botanical Garden moves into its 21st year celebrating with over 80 varieties of Mango and over 30 other types of fruit, all grown here on island! This is St. Mango. Croix’s more popular Michael Boym, summer festival and Flora Sinensis, 1656 teaches us about the agricultural and horticultural potential for this very popular fruit. Often described as “the Queen of Tropical Fruit,” the mango reigns over our summer season here. With a supremely distinctive shape, smell, color and taste, no other fruit evokes the warmth, flavors, fragrances, and exotic beauty of the Tropics. Widely used in cuisine, mangoes are used in chutneys, pickles, side dishes, jelly, curries, fruit preserves, juices, nectar, smoothies, ice cream, fruit salads, ice cream and ice cream topping, mango wine and beer, mango butter, mango sushi, and so much more! Come out and discover all the ways! A visit to this event is a fun and educational experience! Bring the family out! Find Food and Craft Vendors selling products made from mango and other tropical fruits, the very funny Mango Eating Contest, Music and Entertainment, Mango Dis, Mango Dat (a popular food contest featuring drinks, deserts, and sauces), Fun and Creative Kids Activities, Dunk Tank, Educational Opportunities, and more! The Nursery and Museum Store will also be open.

Vendor apps accepted at the Museum Store Tuesday – Saturday, 10 am – 3:30 pm. $10. Early Bird Discount through June 13. St. George Village Botanical Garden 340-692-2876 • www.sgvbg.org June / July 2017 • Page 59

Look toward the North, to find seven bright stars that form the best known of all the star groups, the Big Dipper. The Big Dipper is part of a larger group of stars, the constellation of Ursa Major, the Great Bear.

Return once more to the Big Dipper. This time follow the arc of the handle to the bright star Arcturus and speed on to Spica. Arcturus is the brightest star in Boötes, the Herdsman. Spica is a piece of wheat being held in the hand of Virgo, the Goddess of the Harvest.

Seven bright stars that form the dipper; three stars form the curved handle and four more the bowl. You can use the Big Dipper to find your way around the sky. If you draw a line through the two stars at the end of the bowl and extend the line toward the horizon, you will come to a fainter star, this is Polaris, the North Star.

Shooting stars or meteors are the flash of light we see as pebble sized rocks burn up speeding through the air some 50 miles about the Earth. When the Earth passes through a cloud of this debris left behind by a comet, we experience a meteor shower. On the night of May 6-7 we will experience the maximum of the

Polaris is called the North Star because it is almost exactly directly over the North Pole of the Earth. Thus, while all the other stars circle the night sky from east to west, Polaris stays in the same spot. Go back to the Big Dipper. Draw a line through the same two stars, but this time in the opposite direction. You will come to a bright reddish colored star. This is Regulus, the heart of Leo the Lion. Regulus is also the dot at the base of a backwards question mark. The top of the question mark forms the lion’s head.

hree planets make sky watching fun right now. Once darkness falls, look high overhead for the largest of all the planets, Jupiter. Rising in the east as the Sun sets is Saturn. It will be easier to see by waiting a few hours so Saturn can climb higher in the eastern sky. If you are up before dawn the very bright Venus will dominate the eastern sky until overpowered by the sunrise.

Constellation names are in upper case. Star and planet names in lower case. The sun, moon, planets and stars all rise in the east and set in the west.

BIG DIPPER

Eta Aquarid meteor shower. These “shooting stars” are dust left behind by Halley’s Comet. The best time to observe this shower is between about 3:00 a.m. and dawn. Moonlight will block out many of the fainter meteors but you should be able to see a few of the brighter ones. Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall, anytime is a good time to visit the Virgin Islands. In fact, there really is not much change in the seasons here in the tropics. The lack of dramatic seasons is due to the fact that in the Islands, as the Sun makes its daily trek across the sky, it is always high in the sky. In the temperate zones the Sun is high in the sky during the Summer, but much lower in the sky during the Winter. On June 21st, the Sun will reach its northernmost point in the sky directly over the Tropic of Cancer. This is the first day of summer in the Northern Hemisphere and the first day of winter in the Southern Hemisphere.
