The Virgin Islands Marine Advisory Service and St. Croix Environmental Association (SEA) join the challenge here on St. Croix with Coastweeks!

The Virgin Islands Marine Advisory Service (VIMAS), part of the University of Puerto Rico Sea Grant College Program, is located within the Center for Marine and Environmental Studies at the University of the Virgin Islands. They outreach with the Virgin Islands community to educate and raise awareness about #plasticpollution and #marinedebris and foster appreciation for our natural resources like corals and fish, endangered species, mangrove forests, and marine protected areas. In an effort to reduce the amount of marine debris in VI waters, the St. Croix VIMAS office coordinates local “Coastweeks,” International Coastal Cleanup activities for the The Ocean Conservancy. For the past 30 years, The Ocean Conservancy has inspired millions of people to assist with the cause for healthier seas around the world. Marine Debris is simply trash that has found its way into the marine environment (beaches, waters, mangrove areas or underwater reefs and seagrass beds). Marine debris can be found in all the world’s oceans, but the problem doesn’t necessarily start there. About 80% of the debris found on our beaches and in our waters is blown, washed or dumped from land-based sources. Common land-based sources include people hosting picnics at the beach, poorly-maintained garbage trucks, garbage bins and dumps, and litterbugs. Marine debris is a serious problem not only for animals, but for people too. Marine organisms and people can become entangled in or injured by marine debris. Boat propellers can tangle up in debris, requiring expensive repairs. And many marine animals actually eat marine debris by mistake.
S.E.A volunteers pick up debris from Southgate Coastal Reserve beach, on St. Crox’s Northshore, and collect data for for the Ocean Conservancy.
Not only do Coastal Cleanup programs raise awareness of our oceans, but gather valuable information about marine debris that is used by law and policy makers worldwide. Volunteers of all ages record/document data like what kinds of trash they pick up and how much. This data is then returned to The Ocean Conservancy who then analyze and generate a yearly report summarizing all the data collected from all participating countries. This data is great for teachers who want to promote healthy oceans in the classroom. Be part of the effort! Saturday, September, 16, 8 – 10 am, is the Coastweeks Clean Up Kick Off at Southgate Coastal Reserve. Join others worldwide to clean up and quantify coastal trash. St. Croix Environmental Association (SEA) provides trash bags, gloves, tally sheets, and drinking water (please bring a reusable bottle). Students receive community service hours.

Meet Cover Artist David A. Berg The founder of Blackwood Imaging, a photography collective, David Berg is dedicated to showcasing the culture and artists of the Caribbean Islands. He is a Caribbean native and lives, shoots, and edits just outside David A. Berg. Nicole Canegata. of Fredriksted, St. Croix on an old Danish plantation close to his family home. David’s philosophy is ‘keep it simple.’ He lives in a spartan studio without a definitive boundary from the lush grounds of the plantation surrounding it. He just got his first real computer; he’s been editing his photos on an old laptop for years now. He shoots underwater solely with a GoPro, and when land calls, he typically travels with two lenses, a flat lens and a fish-eye. His other equipment includes a mask, snorkel, and fins, all the easier to chase down the perfect underwater light, catch Moko Jumbies midstride, or island hop to the next Carnival. David never thought he would be a photographer. During his childhood on St. Croix, he danced as a Moko Jumbie, which early on solidified as his artistic identity. This creative outlet morphed into wrestling and mixed martial arts when he moved stateside in his teens. The beauty of the body, and all it was capable of, captivated him and easily translated to success in the ring. A misplaced kick left him on crutches, unable to express himself physically for six months. During this time, a teacher put a camera in his hands hoping to distract him and reignite his spirit. David quickly found that the view finder captured the beauty of the body and its surroundings in a whole new way. The camera could be used to add another dimension to the frozen moment: what was present, and what was missing. He vividly remembers his first picture of a bench, an empty bench, and how that emptiness brought out a feeling that the presence of a body could not have portrayed. The camera also offered him a chance to reconnect, with St. Croix, Page 36 • August / September 2017
Caribbean culture, and his past. From this new perspective behind the camera, David found a reflection, and expansion, of his early Moko Jumbie experiences. David currently uses his photography to capture not only the present but also the past—that which has been largely forgotten or ignored. The history, the hidden depths of each person, each family, each building, place, and culture fascinates him and he is constantly on a mission to illuminate it through his view finder. He describes himself as a “student of his camera,” discovering new lessons of composition, balance, and opposition in the very moment he is capturing the photo. He shoots for himself, to better himself, and is still pleasantly surprised when others find value in his work. He hopes he can use his newfound talent to preserve and document Caribbean culture, as well as express its rich depths to visitors and new arrivals. When David isn’t in the ocean or in the rainforest with his camera, you can find him working as a veterinary assistant, renovating the Danish plantation where he lives, or enjoying a famous West-end sunset on the beach with his dogs, Ray and Wolfie. “I showcased “Casa Las Americas” in Cuba this past May and with the traveling show, “Invisable Heritage,” in Denmark at the VI Cultural Embassy in June where I will return to showcase again in September at the Borreby Estate owned by the Castenschiold/van Holten family. Museum Vestsjaelland and the family are arranging the event together. “Invisable Heritage,” opened on St. Croix at the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts in Frederiksted prior to Transfer Day in March and continued through July. Next, I will have a photography exhibit of neverseen-before images, called “Memories of noname,” on St. Croix in August and September at the Peachcan Gallery on Strand Street, Christiansted. Her i det tidligere Dansk Vestindien er vi særlig glade for danske gæster. Til trods for de mange år siden salget af øerne til USA i 1917, bevarer vi en kulturarv fra næsten 200 år under Dannebrog. Derfor er det naturligt for besøgende danskere at ikke blot nyde det dejlige vejr og den smukke natur men også aflægge besøg på de historiske steder som denne ø har særlig mange af. Næsten alle ø-ture gør ophold på den både boanisk og historisk interessante botaniske have, romfabrikken og Whim plantagemuseum – alle af interesse for danskere. Seværdighder hvor danskere kan fornemme historiens pust omfatter Fort Christiansværn i Christiansted, (hvor en dansk oversættelse af vejledningsbrochuren findes ved indgangen)og de andre bygninger på Christiansteds nationalhistoriske område. Det restaurerede Guvernementshus med en dejlig baghave og imponerende balsal er et smukt minde fra Peter von Scholtens styre mellem 1827 og 1848. Det lillebitte apotekermuseum i Apotekergården på Dronningens Tværgade nær Kompagniets Gade viser de gamle krukker, vægte og møbler fra det oprindelige danske apotek der lå her mellem 1828 og 1970. Fort Frederik i Frederiksted har en udstilling med danske dokumenter om overdragelsen af øerne og en gribende udstilling om slavehandel og slaveri der omfatter fund fra det forliste slaveskib Fredensborg. Today’s Technology Advances Facilitate Danish Research by Nina York There was a time when being a researcher required many hours spent in libraries and museums, frequently requiring appointments made months in advance, travel costs and uncertain outcomes. In the case of research about the Danish West Indies, history buffs in the Virgin Islands knew of the rich lode of information sitting in the archives in Denmark, but accessing it from here was cumbersome and expensive. Yet the deep interest was there, especially in family records, and has now become far more accessible on the virgin-islands-history.org internet site of the Danish National Archives, holding over 5 million documents, many of which have been translated into English. What can we learn in these sources about the past of over a hundred years ago? The records can be studied randomly, but they are organized into five sections that cover Personal History, Ownership History, Slavery, Colonial Power, and Trade and Shipping. These categories cover not just official documents, some of which can be cumbersome and dull, but others such as manifests of what the ships brought here for general consumption. With the knowledge that many food products would spoil in the heat before refrigeration was invented, we note that salting and curing meats and seafood was a necessity, but we wonder why the diet of former days used so little of the produce readily available for growing here that did not require much preservative efforts. We note that so much wine was imported but learn it may have been used for medicinal purposes. So many hats were also purchased from abroad, but seldom useful for sun protection. A lot of machinery was needed and brought here for the sugar industry that was the basis of the local economy. We notice in the burial records of Christiansted detailed information about each deceased person, such as his or her age, occupation, birthplace, marital status, cause of death and gravesite number and cemetery location. These records reveal not only the high infant mortality rate but the existence of diseases that proved fatal in those days, some of which, like leprosy and elephantiasis, no longer pose a threat, nor do dropsy and tuberculosis. Cause of death for infants is listed as “teeth” which is puzzling. Living in a community with a high death rate must have caused a lot of distress, and we realize our good fortune in having a basically good health care system today. There are interesting court cases to read about, some offering testimony from enslaved persons, where we can gather a glimpse of the misery that filled their lives. The cruelty of punishments that prevailed in those days makes us shudder, yet such was the administration of justice in almost all of western society, and not any better in Asia and Africa. We leave the site with relief that those days are over, at least here.

As a Bridal Guide and photographer, many of the couples I work with have a fantasy that their wedding reception will last all night long and, in the end, they will exit through a crowd of cheering guests and sparklers into the night! But as with many things in life, great parties should be measured by how they are sustained, not how they end. Like a campfire, great parties often start slow, eventually build to a great height of fun and excitement but die down at some point. Destination weddings are great because ‘the party’ seems to go on for days. Yet, usually by 10 pm on the night of a wedding, when most venues in the USVI need to observe noise ordinances by 10 or 11 pm, most guests are still excited and willing to rally even though tired from days of travel, sun, and cocktails. Do not despair! The next day still has a lot to offer in the way of celebration but, if you are planning a **Dramatic Exit, I would recommend not waiting until the end of your reception. “Then what’s the point,” you ask? Hear me out. Parties are about flow and timing. Again, like a campfire, when the party flames begin to die the party needs to be stoked. To make this happen, consider opening the dessert bar, or perform the bouquet and garter tosses, etc. Also, instead of holding the **Dramatic Exit at the end, stage it with your photographer earlier in the reception while the kids and grandparents are still awake and everyone is still looking “fresh.” With photography, images can be placed in any order to tell a story; only you and your guests will know how it really happened! After this, everyone can continue to party like Rock Stars. You get an awesome photo op and your guests get to keep the party going...at least until 11 pm. **Dramatic Exit: when a couple leaves or exits their reception through a soul train-esque line of people waving sparklers, pom-poms or any other wavy, sparkly attention grabbing device.

I stress, you stress, we all stress! And it’s not just us. In fact, all living organisms stress, from the largest whale to the smallest plankton. In the case of corals, small marine animals, stress can cause severe impacts including death, increased cases of diseases, and the inability to sustain their symbiotic relationship with zooxanthellae—a microscopic, photosynthetic, dinoflagellate algae. Corals and zooxanthellae share a symbiotic relationship in that zooxanthellae live in the tissue of corals. In return, zooxanthellae provide food to corals. They also give corals a colored appearance, which is based on the pigment of the zooxanthellae. You may think of it as a landlord (coral) – tenant (zooxanthellae) relationship. Under normal conditions, this symbiotic relationship works well for both the coral and the zooxanthellae but when stressed, corals evict their zooxanthellae tenants to conserve energy. With the white calcium carbonate skeleton that the corals grow exposed, through the colorless coral tissue, coral colonies appear white or “bleached”. Coral bleaching typically occurs during extremely warm water events and is the result of a combination of elevated sea surface temperatures and light intensity. If conditions return to normal within a few short weeks, corals may recover but, if the sea surface temperature stays above normal for extended periods of time, the corals may die. In some instances, even if corals recover, the stress from the bleaching event may weaken corals so much that they become more susceptible to coral diseases. Some natural and man-made stressors that impact coral reefs include storms and high wave events, land-based sources of pollution, in-water discharge of waste and sewage, removal of herbivorous fishes, destructive fishing practices, ocean acidification, and invasive species. and widespread stressor in recent years has been climate change and its associated impacts. For reefs to survive, we must continue the serious global conversations about climate change and be innovative in our approach to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and the over-production of greenhouse gasses. We must also continue to protect and restore critical coral reef sites on national and local scales. Since the 1980s, The Nature Conservancy has worked with partner organizations to implement coral conservation programs throughout the Caribbean with the goal to eliminate or reduce man-made stressors that harm Caribbean coral reefs. By doing so, we can build resilience – making reefs stronger against the impacts that we cannot easily control, like mass bleaching events. Whether it is our coral reef restoration work, our support for Marine Protected Areas, our BleachWatch VI community-monitoring program, or the Reef Responsible Sustainable Seafood Initiative, TNC is committed to creating “hope” for reefs—that coral reefs and the many ecological, economic, and cultural benefits that they provide to Caribbean Islanders [and visitors] will continue to exist now and into the future. landing of Columbus at Salt River. Accessed by the road to the left of Salt River Marina. Minimal facilities. Managed by the Territorial State Historic Preservation Office (DPNR), and is within the boundaries of the National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve. Sandy Point - Located on St. Croix’s West End,
this spectacular beach is part of Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge and is one the longest in the Caribbean! Park your car in the lot and take a short hike to the beach area for swimming, more hiking, and wildlife/nature photo ops. The beach is also a popular nesting site for the leatherback, hawksbill, green, and loggerhead sea turtles between April 1 and September 1 and is closed 7-days a week. ARRIVAL. US citizens don’t need a passport; departing visitors need a photo ID. LOCATION. St. Croix lies 18 north latitude and 65 west longitude, about 700 miles from the equator. The Virgin Islands are part of the Antilles chain from the Bahamas down to Trinidad. St. Croix is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea. VIRGIN ISLANDERS. Virgin Islanders are a reserved but friendly people. “Good Morning,” “Good Afternoon,” and “Good Night” are welcome Crucian greetings. Everyone speaks English or a lilting version of it. CLIMATE. Year-round temperatures range in the 80s during the day, 70s most nights, with summer somewhat warmer. Easterly trade winds keep the humidity down. Most island showers are over in minutes. Residents collect rainwater from rooftops into household cisterns. Saltwater distillation plants help the supply. With water scarce, it is used sparingly. TIME. We are on Atlantic Standard in the winter, one hour ahead of Eastern Standard. During the summer, we are the same time as Eastern Daylight Savings. WHAT TO WEAR. Island dress is casual but bathing suits and men without shirts in town or grocery stores is frowned upon. Men don’t need ties or jackets; hats are great sun protectors for everyone. COMMUNICATIONS. St. Croix has several radio stations and three television stations; Cable TV carries the national news stations. Two newspapers are published daily; also an online daily. New York and Miami papers arrive each morning. TELEPHONE SERVICE. The local area code is 340 but you need not dial it for local numbers. Phone cards are sold at many shops throughout the island. We have local Sprint and ATT stores plus Radio Shack for any forgotten cell phone accessories. POSTAL RATES. As part of the US postal system, 1st class mail is .47 cents for the first ounce, postcards are .35 cents, international rates are $1.20 for cards and letters. See maps for post office locations. MARINE LIFE. All native plants, animals, fish (unless harvested for food), coral and shells are protected under the Indigenous Species Act. You will not be permitted to leave the territory with any plants or marine life in your possession. HOLIDAYS. We celebrate US Federal holidays and local ones as well. Always Remember To Drive Left! Whether renting a car or crossing the street, it is vital to remember that traffic in the USVI flows from the left side of the road. St. Croix is 28 miles in length and 7 miles at the widest point with two major towns—Christiansted at the center on the north shore and Frederiksted at the west end. The Caribbean Sea which surrounds the island is always there to guide you along the roads that wind around the coast. Car rental agencies have a variety of vehicles available from sporty jeeps to roomy air-conditioned sedans, vans, and SUVs. The average price usually includes unlimited mileage but you fill the tank upon return! Both US and other driver’s licenses are recognized. The driver and front seat passenger are required by law to use seat belts and cell phone talking or texting is not allowed. Parking in Christiansted is limited and 2-hour parking on parts of Company and Queen Cross Streets is enforced. Look for the signs. There is daytime parking in the National Park Service lot near Ft. Christiansvaern, until 4:30 pm, and a public lot with fees on Strand and King Cross Street. Major roads are asphalt and usually well maintained. The Melvin H. Evans Highway is the only 4-lane, divided highway running from mid-island west to within 1 mile of Frederiksted. The speed limit is 55. In other areas, the 35 mph limit applies; in town, 20 mph unless otherwise posted. Island Worship The history of our island is mirrored in its old church structures, many of which have recently been restored. The Moravian brethren, arriving here in the 1730s from Saxony in today’s Germany, founded their mission to bring Christianity to the enslaved part of the population. The historic Anglican (Episcopalian) churches built in Gothic style include St. John’s in Christiansted and, in Frederiksted, the beautifully restored St. Paul’s church. The large number of Irish settlers, along with Englishmen and Hispanics, have contributed to the presence of the Catholic church; Holy Cross in Christiansted is the oldest in the Virgin Islands. The Danish rule of the island from 1733 to 1917 brought the Lutheran church, which still plays a large role here. Lord God of Sabaoth in Christiansted occupies the former Dutch Reformed Church; Holy Trinity in Frederiksted was built shortly after the town was founded. The Dutch Reformed church (Presbyterian) now has a new mid-island home. These are just a few of the many (over 150) churches on St. Croix, from SeventhDay Adventist to Methodist, Baptist, Church of God, and many more. Church attendance and activities are important to a large part of our population; visitors are always welcome at services, often a high point in their island experience. Many other faiths offer places of worship—a Jewish synagogue, a Hindu temple, and a Moslem mosque, to name a few. Twin Palms — Part of the Cane Bay Wall; sloping shelf starting in 30 feet. Lots of sand chutes, coral heads, snappers, lobster, Green and Hawksbill turtles and Black Durgeons can be found. 14. Davis Bay Wall — Located at the Carambola Beach Resort, this is the closest wall to shore. Sand chutes take you to the wall. Great place for turtles, sharks and even a resident seahorse in the shallows! Dive center on property to assist with this site.

CHRISTIANSTED WALKING TOUR Let’s start a leisurely walking tour of CHRISTIANSTED at the site of the Old Scale House 1 on the harborfront, known as the Wharf. One section of the 1856 structure displays the scale used in former days to weigh barrels of rum and sugar. The other section holds a bookstore and gift shop as well as an information center about all things St. Croix. This is one of a complex of five buildings comprising the Christiansted National Historic Site, established in 1952, administered by the National Park Service.

Fort Christiansvaern 3 was the first public building to be started by the Danes after the island was purchased from France in 1733. It is built of Danish yellow brick and was completed in 1749 and later expanded. Its present appearance reflects the 1830’s period. The exhibit rooms have shifting exhibits of local relevance. See Events Calendar for current exhibits. Admission tickets are sold at the entrance ($3); Senior passes are accepted. Open every day from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm which also coincides with the hours of the adjacent Fort Parking Lot whose hours are strictly enforced. Brochures for all three parks available. The Steeple Building 4 across Hospital Street, formerly the Lutheran Church dates from 1753. This site, on the Walking Tour, is currently closed for renovation. Across Company Street lies the onetime Danish West India & Guinea Company Warehouse 5 , built in 1749. In its courtyard, slave auctions were formerly held. NPS 2nd Thursday Lectures held here.

Originally, Government House 6 on King Street, was built as a home for a Danish merchant. That section dates from 1749; another section, the previous town house of a wealthy Danish plantation owner, was joined to it in 1826, together becoming the seat of the Danish West Indies government. The grand staircase and portico were added in 1830, as was the impressive ballroom/reception hall on the second floor by Governor General Peter von Scholten, who had his office and official residence here. The former are open to the public (entrance at mid-building on King Street). The Lutheran Church 7 across Queen Cross Street on King Street, was originally the Dutch Reformed Church, built in the 1740’s and transferred to the Lutherans in 1831, who brought the furnishings here from the Steeple Building. Later, the steeple was added. Walking up Queen Cross Street to Company Street takes you to Apothecary Hall 8 on the left corner, which holds both the tiny Apothecary Museum on Queen Cross Street, open anytime, and in the courtyard the Archaeological Museum, open only Saturdays 10 am-2 pm. Nearby on Company Street is the Old Market 9 , laid out in the original town plan from 1735, and still being used. The well dates from 1863. On this square you will also find the downtown Post Office.
Christiansted National Historic Site Established in 1952, Christiansted National Historic Site was the first unit of the National Park Saystem in the US Virgin Islands. The park’s historic buidings and grounds commemorate the Danish heritage (1733-1917) of the town of Christiansted, St. Croix, which was named in honor of the reigning King of Denmark and Norway, Christian VI. In the 1700s, Christiansted was part of a mercantile system that linked Europe,West Africa, and the Caribbean in the infamous “Triangular Trade.” Christiansted was the first town in the Lesser Antilles to be built on the grid system and to have a building code. Its distinctive colonial architecture reflects the town’s status as capital of the Danish West Indies (1755-1871); the great wealth generated by the export of cane sugar, molasses, and rum; and the influence of government building inspectors. Tour an early Danish 63 homestead, the Lawaetz Family Museum 1 at Estate Little La Grange on Mahogany Road. Plantation ruins offer visitors a tranquil backdrop for peace and contemplation at the Mt. Washington Labyrinth 2, 2 miles North of Frederiksted. Open every day, year-round. The entrance gate is to the left when you reach the property and parking lot. The Whim Museum 3, on Centerline Road, is a fully-restored sugar cane plantation for self and guided tours and the St. George Village Botanical Garden 4, also on Centerline, showcases 1500 native & exotic species. Governor General Peter von Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the enslaved population in the Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848, from adjacent Buddhoe Park 2. The park contains a bronze bust of the renowned slave rebellion leader. The Oscar E. Henry Customs House 3 was built in the 1800s. The Freedom Fountain 4, facing the pier, was installed for the Emancipation 150th Anniversary Celebration. 63 After severe damage during a labor insurrection in 1878, the town was rebuilt in Victorian style. Victoria House 5, on Strand Street, and Apothecary Hall 6, on King Cross Street between King and Queen Streets, preserve the Frederksted architecture of that time. The Visitor’s Bureau 7, is located upstairs on Strand Street above the Frederiksted Mall and next door to the historic light blue building housing the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts 8. Frederiksted is home to a number of historic churches, including St. Paul’s Episcopal Church 9, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church 10, Friedensberg Moravian Church 11, and St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church 12. The newly restored Old Danish School 13, on Hospital Street and Market Street, is a handsome building. At Strand and Queen Cross Streets is the Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library 14, built in 1803. The Market Place 15, is still in use today, as it was in 1751 at the founding of Frederiksted.

o you find yourself taking hikes or long walks around the island in awe of its natural beauty? Do you marvel in the beauty of our hillsides, natural forests and pristine beaches? If so, then you are a natural ally to the conservation movement in the United States Virgin Islands. How can you join the conservation movement? Spend time outdoors and get involved in one of the organizations working to protect and preserve the island. This feature highlights one organization on island that is making a difference. The Trust for Virgin Islands Lands (TVIL) is a local land trust whose goal is protect scenic views, save wildlife habitats, identify and maintain rare plant species, as well as save culturally significant lands from development. Over the last ten (10) years TVIL has protected and preserved over 100 acres in the Virgin Islands. Contributions from individual donors and charitable foundations have made it possible for the Trust to acquire land and steward it responsibly. TVIL monitors its properties annually and operates in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Land Trust Alliance. The Trust for Virgin Islands Lands (TVIL) is now conducting its Annual Fundraising Appeal. “TVIL’s annual fund drive is vital for the continued preservation and protection of natural landscapes for generations to come,” explains Ms. Richards. There are other ways to support conservation in the territory. Property owners can give TVIL a conservation easement on undeveloped property. With the passage of legislation by Congress at the end of 2015, landowners who give conservation easements on their property to qualifying organizations can obtain federal tax incentives. Landowners can deduct up to fifty percent (50%) of their adjusted gross income on their federal income taxes. The Trust for Virgin Islands Lands (TVIL) is a private, nonprofit 501c(3) organization. On St. Croix, TVIL was granted a w w w.stcroix thisweek.com
perpetual easement on thirty (30) acres of privately held land near Annaly Bay in 2009, obtained title to fifteen (15) acres in Estate Marienhoj in 2013, and raised funds to acquire ten (10) acres in Estate Spring Garden in 2015. In cooperation with the Nature Conservancy and the Virgin Islands Department of Agriculture, TVIL acquired twenty-two (22) acres of pristine, mature forest in the Coral Bay watershed in St. John in 2012. In 2015, TVIL acquired ten (10) acres in Estate Spring Garden that will serve as the centerpiece of a park adjacent to Maroon Ridge. Over the past year, TVIL has made significant additions to its natural land holdings. It acquired forty (40) acres of historic agricultural land in Estate Lowry Hill from a generous donor. The property is significant because is it a part of the historic Castle Nugent area on island. This year, TVIL aims to continue to acquire land with the ultimate goal of establishing a territorial park system where locals and visitors will be able to learn about rich heritage while connecting with the land.
“The land that we have protected would otherwise have remained vulnerable to development,” states Mike Walsh, Board President of TVIL. “Its our belief that through preservation, TVIL will contribute to the economic vitality of St. Croix and the Virgin Islands. Our islands are rich in heritage, cultural diversity, community engagement, and natural beauty. This is what sets us apart and will allow us to move forward despite the challenging economic times.” Mike talked about the TVIL, as part of the Friends of the St. Croix National Parks Lecture Series, on June 8. ver these months the sky over the Virgin Islands will dazzle with planets, stars, meteors, and an eclipse of the Sun.
As the sky grows dark, high in the west is the very bright star-like object Jupiter. Just south of Jupiter is the bright star of Spica, a grain of wheat being held in the hand of Virgo, the goddess of the harvest. At the same time, high in the southern sky is a bright red star, Antares, the red heart of Scorpius, the scorpion. Antares is the heart of the scorpion; perhaps you can see the stars that form the scorpion’s long curved tail. Scorpius is one of the few constellations, or star groups, that looks something like you thing it should. North of Antares is a bright star-like object, not as bright as Jupiter, this is Saturn. Venus will dominate t early morning eastern sky. Venus is the third brightest natural object in the sky after the Sun and the Moon. You should be able to easily spot three bright stars which form a large triangle. Since the triangle is visible all night long during the Summer up north, it is called the Summer Triangle. Each bright star marks a different star group or constellation. Farthest West and lowest in the sky is Vega, part of Lyra the Harp. To the South is Altair, in Aquila the Eagle. The third bright star is Deneb, marking the tail of

Cygnus, the Swan. Perhaps you can see other stars which form the Swan’s body, neck and head and its wings which spread wide. Cygnus is flying South along the Milky Way. The Milky Way looks like a hazy band of light arcing across the sky. It is the light from billions and billions of stars so far away, that all we see is their light combined into this haze. From time-to-time the Earth passes through a cloud of dust left behind by a comet and you can see a meteor shower. The dark clear skies of the Virgin Islands make the islands a great place to see these “shooting stars”. About fifty miles above the Earth, walnut size pieces of dust and ice are passing through the air so quickly that they burn up and you see a flash of light, a shooting star. The flash happens so quickly that if you say to a friend “look over there”, by the time they look the flash will be gone. July, August, and October all bring meteor showers. The Delta Aquarids is an average shower that can produce up to 20 meteors per hour at its peak on the night of July 29th to the morning of July 30th. In the early morning hours of August 12th you will be able to see the Persid meteor shower, the best meteor shower of the year. The comet which left the dust behind which forms the Persids is comet Swift-Tuttle. Swift-
Tuttle was discovered in 1862. It was found again in 1992 and astronomers have since found records of it going back to 69 BC. The Orionids is an average shower producing up to 20 meteors per hour at its peak. It is produced by dust grains left behind by comet Halley, which has been known and observed since ancient times. The shower peaks this year on the morning of October 22nd. On August 21st there will be a solar eclipse as the Moon will come directly between the Earth and the Sun. From the northern Pacific Ocean, across much of the United States, and out into the Atlantic Ocean the Moon will completely block out the Sun and people will experience a Total Solar Eclipse. In USVI the Moon will only partially cover the Sun: the partial eclipse begins at 2:14 pm, the maximum of the eclipse is at 3:36 pm, and the partial eclipse ends at 4:47 pm. It is important to never look directly at the Sun without proper eye protection. Sunglasses are NOT proper eye protection. The Sun will shine directly overhead on the equator on September 22nd and there will be nearly equal amounts of day and night throughout the world. This is the first day of Fall (autumnal equinox) in the Northern Hemisphere and the first day of Spring (vernal equinox) in the Southern Hemisphere.
