Good Day and welcome to the United States Virgin Islands! Our people welcome you. We are a unique place to visit with a variety of islands: St. Croix, St. Thomas, St. John, Water Island and dozens of small cays and islets. Each island is unique. Each offers distinct and memorable experiences. St. Croix is our largest island and we invite you to discover our historic towns; Christiansted and Frederiksted and discover the quaint shops and Danish Architecture. St Croix has wide open spaces, magnificent vistas and a unique culture. St. John is almost all National Park and perfectly preserved. It has sparkling turquoise bays and long, lazy beaches. Enjoy the relaxing atmosphere. St Thomas is the shopping center of the Caribbean with duty free shopping and a vibrant nightlife. Charlotte Amalie is the capital city of the United States Virgin Islands with its huge natural harbor, bustling port and vistas that will take your breath away. Try our underwater delights, bask on a beach, soak up some sunshine, sail into sunset or hike the trails. You can see why we call this "America’s Paradise." As the new Governor of the United States Virgin Islands, I assure you that we will do everything possible to make your stay enjoyable. Our people are warm and friendly. We will welcome you in conversation. Don’t hesitate to ask people for directions or shopping tips. Our people are eager to help you enjoy your visit. I extend to you my warmest greetings and hope you enjoy your vacation in the United States Virgin Islands! Sincerely, Kenneth Mapp Governor

Summer Sea Turtle Hatchling Watches Experience a Miracle of Nature! Sea turtles are among the largest living reptiles, spend almost their entire lives at sea but lay their eggs on land. The leatherback, hawksbill, green and loggerhead sea turtle are found nesting on the beaches and swimming in the waters of the U.S. Virgin Islands. The leatherback is the largest with females weighing in at 600 – 800 pounds! Crawling ashore to lay their eggs, they use their front flippers to excavate body pits and fling the upper layer of dry sand away. With their bodies in this pit, they use their rear flippers to dig an egg chamber. The female will deposit about 80 to 150 eggs, cover them with sand and return to the sea. The eggs incubate for about 2 months then the hatchlings crawl to the surface of the sand, wait for it to cool at sunset and then race to the sea. Here they spend several days swimming far off shore to drift lines where they can rest, eat, and grow. All four of these sea turtle species are designated as threatened or endangered and are protected by the Endangered Species Act. Join the St. Croix Environmental Association (SEA) and an interpretive guide in a members-only Leatherback Hatchling Watch with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service at Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge. Watches are scheduled for Wednesday, June 10, Thursday, June 25, and Tuesday, July 7, 5:15 pm – 8:30 pm. This is a perfect time and reason to join as a single, couple, or family. Reservations are required to participate. For a group reservation of 15 – 30, contact the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service directly. Contact info below. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has strict guidelines for this most memorable experience. Your safety and enjoyment of the experience is their priority. Meet at the entrance gate to Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge (0.5 mile beyond the west end of the Melvin H. Evans Highway) by 5:15pm. The group will gather here before driving into the refuge together. The gate is locked when we enter, and the group must stay together at all times. Thus, it is not possible for individuals to leave early except in case of emergency. The trip will end between 8 and 9pm.

TIPS FOR A SAFE AND COMFORTABLE VISIT  Wear long sleeves and long pants to discourage mosquito bites. Insect repellent may be helpful.  Do not apply repellent to hands since you may touch wildlife.  If it is thundering/lightning, programs will be canceled for safety. Please seek shelter in a building or vehicle, not under a tree! We may be able to reschedule a trip for your group.  Bring something to drink as we may be seated on the beach for several hours. Think about our island and environment; use reusable bottles. No food please!  Wear sturdy footwear that is appropriate for hiking on a sandy beach. No flip-flops! The St. Croix Environmental Association celebrates 29 years in 2015. Formed in 1986 by a small group of dedicated and conservation-minded folks, the organization has managed environmental education, advocacy and conservation programs since its inception. SEA’s directors, staff and members have worked on many controversial issues over the years such as land and water use planning, wastewater treatment and reclamation, industrial pollution, alternative energy and much more. The organization’s education programs serve youth and adults in schools, summer programs and at special events. A huge mangrove restoration project at Salt River Bay, after Hurricane Hugo, is one of SEA’s outstanding accomplishments. Through the V.I. ReLeaf Program, SEA also planted hundreds of trees at St. Croix schools, parks, roadsides, and public housing developments. But it is people who make SEA’s programs successful! Please consider becoming a member and help to keep St. Croix green and clean for many years to come.

THINGS TO REMEMBER  Programs begin promptly. Be on time to increase the possibility of seeing an emergence.  You must provide transportation for your group into the refuge. Consider a carpool or hire a taxi van. All drivers and cars must remain with the group during the trip.  US Fish and Wildlife Service does not provide transportation at any time.  Photography and videography of the hatchlings are prohibited - even with cameras and recorders that perform well in low-light situations. Late after noon in the refuge, however, is beautiful and you are allowed to use cameras to photograph as long as no flash is used.  Binoculars are welcome and useful on this visit to Sandy Point.  No cell phones, video games, or flashlights are allowed on the beach.  Beach chairs, beach umbrellas, and alcoholic beverages are prohibited on the beach.  Smoking is prohibited during the program.

Taking a breath.

AROUND THE ISLAND ARTfarm, LLC • 340-514-4873

Local farmer Luca Gasperi and family grow a great diversity of high quality salads, tomatoes, vegetables, herbs and fruits in small interplanted gardens on the South Shore. Now in their 4th season on the South Shore (14th year farming organically on St. Croix), ARTfarm is known for sweet local tomatoes in the winter months and pineapples in the summer, and local restaurant chefs prize their microgreens and edible flowers. Luca is always experimenting with new crops and the shady farmstand sits near several of the gardens and a tiny art gallery. Arrive early to the stand to greet your neighbors and for the best selection. The farm is available for weddings and farm-totable events. Current produce listings on their website: ARTfarmLLC.com

Sweet Lime Furnishings – 340-719-6360

At Sweet Lime Furnishings we believe two things— You should be as comfortable outdoors as you are indoors and your home furnishings should make your life easier, not harder. Our outdoor furniture collection—the largest on St. Croix—is elegant unfinished teak, manmade wicker over an aluminum frame or durable plastic lumber with a 20-year warranty. Our sofas and chairs are covered in washable or Sunbrella fabrics. Our woods are teak, mahogany and other durable hardwoods. And island life is also about fun, so you’ll also find exotic, oneof-a-kind pieces and the work of some of St. Croix’s best-known artists. We’re also happy to special order for you. Find us open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 until 4, on Facebook, and on the web at www.sweetlimefurnishings.com.

Uniform City — 340-778-9775 If you’re a professional and work in uniform, this store has the brand names and the selection you are looking for. Come in and browse not only uniforms, but footwear and professional equipment for men and women in the fields of Culinary, Medical, Police, Dental, Clergy, and Security. After opening a small store specializing in health care equipment and a few nurses uniforms thirty years ago, Winifred Schuck turned that thought into something that worked for many more industries. Today, she offers both traditional and trend-setting styles right off the rack to Chefs, Physicians, Nurses, Clergy, Choirs, and more. Special orders available for hotels and spas. Located at Bassin Triangle, next to the police station, open Mon – Fri, 11:00 – 5:30 pm and “most” Saturdays or by appointment.

The Courtyard is an open-air piece of art they do tell. The food is the most creative they say (voted “Most Creative Cuisine,” Daily News 2009 Readers’ Poll). From our kitchen comes fresh fish, grilled baby calamari, and our famous stuffed filet. The specials are over the top — you just won’t know what to order in this little spot. As hard as you try, you might never find as interesting a place as this to dine — from the food, to the wine, to the magic of this place and even to your waiter’s happy little face. People travel from one place to the next but always return and say Savant is the best. We could list all of our awards and all our grand fetes, but the best thing to do is just ask anybody on the streets! Dinner, Monday-Saturday, 6-10pm.

You Are Here Bar & Grille – 340-713-0246 You Are Here Bar & Grille is tucked away in Kings Alley, just off the Boardwalk. Owner, Andrew Havanchak, moved to St. Croix three years ago and fell in love with St. Croix and decided to build on it! The atmosphere at You Are Here is Unique, Fun, and Upbeat merging Local & Continental culture. We have free WiFi, a power strip for plugins, & the menu offers food that is both Quick and Savory. Open 11 am – 11 pm every day, it is home of the largest World Map on island so you’ll always know where You Are... when You Are Here! 1st Place Entrée at A Taste of St. Croix 2013 for Shrimp Corndogs; 3rd Place 2014 for Lobster Shrimp Rolls! “I love Indian food, maybe because I was born and raised in India, but even today, after living in America for over 30 years and traveling all over Europe, I can’t find a cuisine that satisfies me more. Eating tasty food to me is like meditation—it gives me a different kind of satisfaction.” So says Gary Udhwani who recently opened Thali Indian Grill along with his partner Sally Balkaran. “Sally was a good cook but I new Indian recipes. Together we brought the first Indian restaurant to the island. I am a good food critic and I know how I like my food to taste. I believed that, if I liked it, most of my customers would too. I’ve had several customers say, “If this is what vegetarian food tastes like, I could become a vegetarian!” The meats, although we don’t serve pork or beef, taste just as awesome. Indian food is automatically healthy— the Ayurvedic spices have medicinal values. Ayurveda drives Indian recipes and is followed in every Indian kitchen. It tells us that a meal is complete when you have all 6 tastes— Sweet, Sour, Salty, Astringent, Pungent and Bitter. We include them all by offering 2 sides or two apps of your choice with each meal. Murg Makhani (Butter Chicken) was our ‘best seller’ a few months ago but our customers are now being more brave and venturing into other dishes. If you have not tried Indian food, however, Butter Chicken would be a good way to start! We had an amazing response at A Taste of St. Croix and Sunset BBQ in April serving over 1500 samples. I didn’t think that so many people would just love our cooking. It was a very humbling experience. I have been self-employed all my life and had passed the stage of worrying about success or failure of any of my businesses years ago. This restaurant has given me a new high of customer satisfaction.” Thali Indian Grill • Tues – Fri, 11 am – 9:30 pm Sat & Sun, 5:30 – 9:30 pm • (340) 226-3349 www.thaliindiangrill.com • Facebook

“GROWTH” CONTEMPORARY ART EXHIBIT, JUNE 1 – 27, CMCA, FREDERIKSTED.

Meet Cover Photographer Tina Henle

Tina Henle.

work in the darkroom processing and printing my work for the first time, witnessing the magic of seeing my images appear on paper.

“Photography and art have always been a part of my life. I was raised on St. Croix and greatly influenced by my father Fritz Henle and his extraordinary photographic artistry. My mother Marguerite was his assistant and we were all his models at various times.

My passion for photography over the next three decades led me to Asia, Central and South America, Europe, the US and throughout the Caribbean. The lure of different cultures, exotic landscapes and the desire to wander inspires my art. Finding an odd or interesting angle, some abstraction of subject, an irony or ambiguity of a situation, or simply some beauty is what captivates me. I began shooting primarily in B&W film and later evolved to include color. Today I shoot with a digital camera, including my iPhone and I love the immediacy of the digital world. I also enjoy the freedom to shoot amply at no added expense but the words “Don’t overshoot” still override. Red Shadows.

Running Free.

Assisting him on assignments was routine and our home was a gallery for his work. There was a constant attention to the unending beauty of our tropical surroundings, the magnificent Caribbean light, and my father’s readiness to capture whatever imagery was presenting itself. We always joked that he “lived with the camera around his neck.” Our home was filled with classical music, libraries of interesting books and dinnertime was about sharing stories. My siblings and I were encouraged to explore and be creative. The beaches and sea were our playground. My childhood was filled with many wonderful teachers. Dance became my first love at age nine and I spent many years under the guidance of Atti Bermudez who founded the Theatre Dance Company. She constantly encouraged her students to find their own self expression in dance as well as in all the arts.

When I graduated from high school my dad gave me my first twin lens Rolleiflex camera. He taught me as much as he knew about the technical aspects of the camera as well as how to compose and understand light. “Don’t overshoot” were his guiding words, encouraging me to be discerning and trust in my ability to see and shoot decisively. I furthered my studies at the University of New Mexico where I received a BA in Art and Anthropology in 1982. There I learned to

For over 22 years in St. Croix I have had a successful career in wedding, event, portrait, and commercial photography. I try to create a sense of ease and spontaneity with my subjects, always working toward optimal compositions and lighting. I hope to see things in fresh ways, contrive little and I wait for the “decisive moments.” I have exhibited in numerous shows in the VI and abroad. My work is available at the Henle Studio, 55 Company Street in Christiansted, along with the work of my late father, Fritz and my late sister, Maria. The Gallery has been in existence for 23 years and includes other local and international artists.”

For many couples, their first experience with a professional photographer is their wedding day. Photography tends to be a prime piece of the wedding budget as well as the most important item on a couple’s list. As a professional photographer, I feel it’s important to prepare for this experience in advance. I have worked with all types of couples— some need very little direction and others need guidance every step of the way. Why is that? Wedding photography is a specific genre of photography that combines several photographic styles in one including fashion, editorial, journalism, and sports (believe it or not). Thus for the photographer, communication, technical as well as people skills, composition, creativity, and timing are paramount to mastering this genre. For the wedding couple, their wedding day is similar to a crash course in modeling 101. Like anything that looks easy, modeling is a skill. Some can do it naturally and some have to learn. The thought of this may feel uncomfortable. So how do you prepare? How do you ensure your photos turn out amazing? First step is selecting a qualified photographer. Second step, practice. Once your “Wedding Day” Pinterest board is filled to the brim with portraits of brides and grooms in action, some FaceTime is in order. Review all of those romantic, “natural” looking images, grab your partner, get in front of the mirror and act them out. Yes, it will feel silly and, yes, you may get some resistance, but do it anyway. See how you look together. See what angles work with your bodies. Hold poses to see how they feel. Be aware of how you position your hands, your eyes, and your face. Look at one another. Kiss. Kiss a lot! You will notice what works and what doesn’t. You will also notice how you naturally want to move verses how you have to move to recreate the poses you pinned. The difference can feel very awkward however the results look wonderful. Our Danish Connection

Danish Summer Tradition Adopted Locally — by Nina York

I

n Denmark at this time of year, the days are so long that many people forget about the need to get a full night’s sleep. If the weather is pleasant, with temperatures close to 20 Centigrades (approaching 70º F), there is a jubilant mood prevailing everywhere, The beaches will be crowded, and many inland residents place themselves on lounge chairs facing the sun for as long as they can spare the time. What a contrast to the manner in which we confront our almost constant tropical sun! Here we seek the shade, to avoid burns and overheating of our bodies, but we share with the Danes a love of beach-going and find ourselves far more comfortable with water temperatures in the 80º’s F (as do the Danes when they visit here).

his name and that custom prevails in many Catholic countries. But other traditions are linked to this time, the peak of summer, when herbs and flowers as well as fruit are most fragrant and flavorful, allowing the gathering of the healthy bounty of nature, another source of renewal. Sacred springs attracted many to sample their waters, again with purification as the original primary intent. In a more dramatic pursuit of this ritual cleansing, Denmark adopted bonfires for this time for chasing away evil spirits. It was believed that the witches of the world gathered that night at a certain mountaintop in Northern Germany, and for a time, burning a witch effigy was part of the ceremony in Denmark. Today, most Danes celebrate the day, to them known as St. Hans Aften (St. John’s Eve), with warming bonfires all over the country, where friends and neighbors gather for a enjoyable evening ritual.

Summer is for most a time of joy and renewal, and ancient traditions in connection with the Singing Danish Midsummer Song at St. Hans Aften. FREE REEF JAM SNORKEL CLINICS, JUNE 20, & JULY 18. CALL S.E.A, 773-1989.

Summer Sailing! Learn to sail or advance your skills at the St. Croix Yacht Club this summer! Beginner, intermediate, and advanced classes are available for Optimist, Sunfish, and 420s in three sessions starting June 22.

JULY 2015

Guiding Visitors & Locals for 44 Years

The Optimist is the largest sailboat class in the world and is the sailboat that nearly all of the greatest sailors in the world learn to sail. One person sails this 8-foot boat and learns the basics of sailing, tying knots, sail trim, steering, bailing water, rigging, derigging, teamwork, and safety. The self-bailing Sunfish is a natural progression from the Optimist Pram. Sailors will learn the ins and outs of rigging the Sunfish. With a larger sail area, and a boat conducive to 2, participants will be exposed to the positions of Captain and Crew. In the Sunfish Intermediate course, sailors will continue to work on executing, starts and understanding the race course strategy. After completing this course, SCYC has seen its sailors go as far as youth Olympics! The standard in High School and Collegiate Racing, the 2-person 420 boat is used as a highlevel racing boat with trapeze and spinnaker. The Club 420 course will focus on transitioning sailors into a faster, more technical sailing vessel. The focus will be on rigging, and boat-handling. Sailors will try out the position of “Skipper” and “Crew” and Spinnaker will be introduced based on class skill level, and weather conditions. Completion of this course allows for sailors to join the High School Sailing Team upon entering 8th grade. The Club 420 Racing session will focus on race strategy, starts, and the use of the trapeze and spinnaker. Summer offers the opportunity for High School sailors to gain more experience in “Trap & Chute” and possibly travel to state-side junior sailing events. Regatta attendance in the fall and spring will be encouraged.

St. Croix

ARRIVAL. US citizens don’t need a passport; departing visitors need a photo ID. LOCATION. St. Croix lies 18 north latitude and 65 west longitude, about 700 miles from the equator. The Virgin Islands are part of the Antilles chain from the Bahamas down to Trinidad. St. Croix is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea. VIRGIN ISLANDERS. Virgin Islanders are a reserved but friendly people. “Good Morning,” “Good Afternoon,” and “Good Night” are welcome Crucian greetings. Everyone speaks English or a lilting version of it. CLIMATE. Year-round temperatures range in the 80s during the day, 70s most nights, with summer somewhat warmer. Easterly trade winds keep the humidity down. Most island showers are over in minutes. Residents collect rainwater from rooftops into household cisterns. Saltwater distillation plants help the supply. With water scarce, it is used sparingly. TIME. We are on Atlantic Standard in the winter, one hour ahead of Eastern Standard. During the summer, we are the same time as Eastern Daylight Savings. WHAT TO WEAR. Island dress is casual but bathing suits and men without shirts in town or grocery stores is frowned upon. Men don’t need ties or jackets; hats are great sun protectors for everyone. No adaptors needed for personal plug-ins. WE ARE HERE TO HELP YOU. The Christiansted Visitors Bureau is located in Government House on Queen Cross Street; open weekdays. The Frederiksted Visitor’s Bureau is located in a Strand Street courtyard near the Pier; open week-

days & cruise-ship days. A Christiansted National Historic Site Visitor’s Orientation Center is located at Scale House on King Street at the Wharf. The seasoned traveler doesn’t take chances. Lock your car, don’t wear valuable jewelry wandering in town, keep to the main areas. CURRENCY & BANKING. We use the US dollar and credit cards are accepted everywhere. First Bank (all branches), M – Th, 8:30 am – 4 pm, F, 8:30 am – 5 pm, Sat, 9 am – 1 pm (SI and Fsted); Banco Popular Sunny Isle, M – F, 8:30 am – 4 pm, Sat, 9 am – 1 pm, Banco Popular Orange Grove, M – F, 8 am – 4 pm; Scotia Bank Sunny Isle, M – W, 8:30 – 3:30, Th – F, 8:30 am – 5:30 pm. See maps for bank and ATM locations.

Croton & Ruins, St. George Village Botanical Garden.

Always Remember To Drive Left! Whether renting a car or crossing the street, it is vital to remember that traffic in the USVI flows from the left side of the road.

TAXES. No sales tax but a 10% government tax is applied to hotel rooms. COMMUNICATIONS. St. Croix has several radio stations and three television stations; Cable TV carries the national news stations. Two newspapers are published daily; also an online daily. New York and Miami papers arrive each morning.

St. Croix is 28 miles in length and 7 miles at the widest point with two major towns—Christiansted at the center on the north shore and Frederiksted at the west end. The Caribbean Sea which surrounds the island is always there to guide you along the roads that wind around the coast.

TELEPHONE SERVICE. The local area code is 340 but you need not dial it for local numbers. Phone cards are sold at many shops throughout the island. We have local Sprint and ATT stores plus Radio Shack for any forgotten cell phone accessories.

Car rental agencies have a variety of vehicles available from sporty jeeps to roomy air-conditioned sedans, vans, and SUVs. The average price usually includes unlimited mileage but you fill the tank upon return! Both US and other driver’s licenses are recognized. The driver and front seat passenger are required by law to use seat belts and cell phone talking or texting is not allowed.

POSTAL RATES. As part of the US postal system, 1st class mail is .49 cents for the first ounce, postcards are .33 cents, international rates are $1.10 for cards and letters. See maps for post office locations.

Parking in Christiansted is limited and 2-hour parking on parts of Company and Queen Cross Streets is enforced. Look for the signs. There is daytime parking in the National Park Service lot near Fort Christiansvaern and a large public lot with fees just west of town on Strand and King Cross Streets.

MARINE LIFE. All native plants, animals, fish (unless harvested for food), coral and shells are protected under the Indigenous Species Act. You will not be permitted to leave the territory with any plants or marine life in your possession. HOLIDAYS. We celebrate US Federal holidays and local ones as well. The government closes for all holidays, banks close for most. Shops stay open except on major holidays.

Major roads are asphalt and usually well maintained. The Melvin H. Evans Highway is the only 4-lane, divided highway running from mid-island west to within 1 mile of Frederiksted. The speed limit is 55. In other areas, the 35 mph limit applies; in town, 20 mph unless otherwise posted.

Rejsemål St. Croix PRAKTISKE OPLYSNINGER OM US VIRGIN ISLANDS

Susan Wall

Island Worship The history of our island is mirrored in its old church structures, many of which have recently been restored. The Moravian brethren, arriving here in the 1730s from Saxony in today’s Germany, founded their mission to bring Christianity to the enslaved part of the population. The historic Anglican (Episcopalian) churches built in Gothic style include St. John’s in Christiansted and, in Frederiksted, the beautifully restored St. Paul’s church. The large number of Irish settlers, along with Englishmen and Hispanics, have contributed to the presence of the Catholic church; Holy Cross in Christiansted is the oldest in the Virgin Islands. The Danish rule of the island from 1733 to 1917 brought the Lutheran church, which still plays a large role here. Lord God of Sabaoth in Christiansted occupies the former Dutch Reformed Church; Holy Trinity in Frederiksted was built shortly after the town was founded. The Dutch Reformed church (Presbyterian) now has a new mid-island home. These are just a few of the many (over 150) churches on St. Croix, from SeventhDay Adventist to Methodist, Baptist, Church of God, and many more. Church attendance and activities are important to a large part of our population; visitors are always welcome at services, often a high point in their island experience. Many other faiths offer places of worship—a Jewish synagogue, a Hindu temple, and a Moslem mosque, to name a few. An easy-to-follow guide is actually the yellow pages of our local phone book beginning on Page 63. w w w.stcroix thisweek.com

Befolk-ningen. Virgin Islands befolkning er venlig men tilbageholdende. Man hilser gerne med “Good morning”, “Good Afternoon” og “Good Night.” Tider. Her som alle vegne, vær forsigtig. Kontaktnumre i Nødstilfælde. Telefon. Se by- og økortene for at finde postkontorerne. Helligdage. Her fejrer man amerikanske helligdage foruden en hel del lokale. This National Park Commemorates Our Danish Heritage (1733-1917).

CHRISTIANSTED WALKING TOUR

Let’s start a leisurely walking tour of CHRISTIANSTED at the site of the Old Scale House 1 on the harborfront, known as the Wharf. One section of the 1856 structure displays the scale used in former days to weigh barrel of rum and sugar. The other section holds a bookstore and gift shop as well as an information center about all things St. Croix. This is one of a complex of five buildings comprising the Christiansted National Historic Site, established in 1952, administered by the National Park Service.

Fort Christiansvaern 3 was the first public building to be started by the Danes after the island was purchased from France in 1733. It is built of Danish yellow brick and was completed in 1749 and later expanded. Its present appearance reflects the 1830’s period.

Open Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm, weekends 9 am to 5 pm. 2 hour parking available on site. The Steeple Building 4 across Hospital Street, formerly the Lutheran Church and dates from 1753. It houses a display documenting aspects of the religious history of St. Croix. Ask for opening hours at the Fort. Across Company Street lies the onetime Danish West India & Guinea Company Warehouse 5 , built in 1749. In its courtyard, slave auctions were formerly held.

Government House 6 on King Street was in part the former home of a Danish merchant. That section dates from 1749; another section, the previous town house of a wealthy Danish plantation owner, was joined to it in 1826, together becoming the seat of the Danish West Indies government. The grand staircase and portico were added in 1830, as was the impressive ballroom/reception hall on the second floor by Governor General Peter von Scholten, who had his office and official residence here. The former are open to the public (entrance at mid-building on King Street). The Virgin Islands Tourism office (open weekdays only) is downstairs fronting the Lutheran Church. The Lutheran Church 7 across Queen Cross Street on King Street, was originally the Dutch Reformed Church, built in the 1740’s and transferred to the Lutherans in 1831, who brought the furnishings here from the Steeple Building. Later, the steeple was added. Walking up Queen Cross Street to Company Street takes you to Apothecary Hall 8 on the left corner, which holds both the tiny Apothecary Museum on Queen Cross Street, open anytime, and in the courtyard the Archaeological Museum, open only Saturdays 10 am-2 pm. Nearby on Company Street is the Old Market 9 , laid out in the original town plan from 1735, and still being used. The well dates from 1863. On this square you will also find the downtown Post Office.

Christiansted National Historic Site Established in 1952, Christiansted National Historic Site was the first unit of the National Park Saystem in the US Virgin Islands. The park’s historic buidings and grounds commemorate the Danish heritage (1733-1917) of the town of Christiansted, St. Croix, which was named in honor of the reigning King of Denmark and Norway, Christian VI. In the 1700s, Christiansted was part of a mercantile system that linked Europe,West Africa, and the Caribbean in the infamous “Triangular Trade.” Christiansted was the first town in the Lesser Antilles to be built on the grid system and to have a building code. Its distinctive colonial architecture reflects the town’s status as capital of the Danish West Indies (1755-1871); the great wealth generated by the export of cane sugar, molasses, and rum; and the influence of government building inspectors.

Governor General Peter von Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the enslaved population in the Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848, from adjacent Buddhoe Park 2. The park contains a bronze bust of the renowned slave rebellion leader. The Oscar E. Henry Customs House 3 was built in the 1800s. The building is undergoing renovations. The Freedom Fountain 4, facing the pier, was installed for the Emancipation 150th Anniversary Celebration. 63 After severe damage during a labor insurrection in 1878, the town was rebuilt in Victorian style. Victoria House 5, on Strand Street, and Apothecary Hall 6, on King Cross Street between King and Queen Streets, preserve the Frederksted architecture of that time. The Visitor’s Bureau 7, is located upstairs on Strand Street above the Frederiksted Mall and next door to the historic light blue building housing the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts 8. Frederiksted is home to a number of historic churches, including St. Paul’s Episcopal Church 9, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church 10, Friedensberg Moravian Church 11, and St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church 12. The newly restored Old Danish School 13, on Hospital Street and Market Street, is a handsome building. At Strand and Queen Cross Streets is the Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library 14, built in 1803. The Market Place 15, is still in use today, as it was in 1751 at the founding of Frederiksted.

St. Croix’s National Parks

A Glimpse into the Past: Christiansted National Historic Site Joshua M. Torres, PhD—National Park Service, Cultural Resource Program Manager Part 5 in a series The Christiansted National Historic Site (CNHS) occupies seven acres on the waterfront of Christiansted Harbor. The historic structures, and the archaeological remains that lie hidden beneath its surface, tell the story of 18th and 19th century Danish colonial rule and life on St. Croix (Figure 1). The Danish colonial structures include Fort Christiansvaern, Danish West India & Guinea Company Warehouse, Danish Customs House, Scale House, and Steeple Building. Fort Christiansvaern, is a French-style Danish colonial fortification that commands the Christiansted harbor entrance to the north. The fort protected shipping from potential attacks by foreign invaders, privateers and enforced the collection of customs duties, housed prisoners, and quartered Danish troops responsible for internal security of the island. Enslaved Africans and conscripted Danish soldiers built the fort sited on the earthworks of an earlier French fortification. Construction started in 1738 and was largely completed by 1749, with the last major additions dating 1835–1841. The Steeple Building was the first Lutheran church in Christiansted (1753). Construction began in 1750 and the steeple tower added 1794–96. Multiple religious organizations—many that admitted Africans and African descendants used the building to hold their services. In 1831 the building was deconsecrated and the Lutheran congregation moved to its present location. Afterward the structure served a number of different uses including: a military bakery and warehouse, community hall, hospital, elementary school, and museum. The Danish Customs house (1840-1842) was built on the earlier administrative compound associated with the Danish Guinea Company Warehouse. The Danish colonial government collected customs revenues, or duties/taxes, at this location. The Customs House is prominently located, between the wharf, Scale House, and Danish Guinea Company Warehouse due to its critical role in Colonial operations. Until 1927 the Customs Service for St. Croix was located in this building. The building later served as the first public library in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The Scale House (1856) contained the facilities for inspecting and weighing imports and exports to and from St. Croix. The Scale House is constructed on the same footprint as earlier structures of similar use. The structure is on the wharf, allowing for the immediate tally and supervision of the movement of goods into Christiansted. The first floor contained the office for the weighmaster and scale, while the second floor quartered Danish soldiers, and later harbor staff. Currently, the first floor of the Scale House is open to the public and displays a19th century scale used during the late Danish period. w.stcroixthisweek.com thisweek.com wwwww.stcroix

The Danish Guinea Company Warehouse is a complex of masonry structures with a walled courtyard. Construction was completed in 1749 and the warehouse served as the offices and quarters of the Danish West India & Guinea Company. The original compound stretched across Hospital Street (then non-existent) and held the infrastructure of the Transatlantic Slave Trade and international sugar exchange. The complex was built for the company by enslaved Africans and a walled compound contained holding cells for the enslaved, a slave auction yard, and a storage area for imported goods. Portions of the compound were destroyed in 1772 by a hurricane. After 1833 the warehouse became a supply depot with outbuildings serving as additional housing, smithing area, and offices for the Danish military. The warehouse also served as the office for the Panama Cable and Telegraph Co. (1901), and was later repurposed as a post office (1939-2001). One of the most important resources within the park is the invisible buried remains of the Danish Guinea Company Warehouse complex. Sketch maps from 1779 and 1803 provide a picture of potential archaeological features and changes that occurred at the site through time (Figure 2). By the 1820s, following the cessation of the slave trade, the majority of the infrastructure was removed, including the dwellings of Royal, attached, Slaves, and eventually

Despite previous alterations to the landscape, archaeological deposits that tell the story of the site remain. On December 18, 2014 the National Park Service (NPS) completed excavations for the removal of a mahogany tree stump at CHNS. The tree was cut down in August 2014 to prevent encroachment of the tree and its roots into adjacent Danish Custom House, historic well structure, and modern public sidewalk. A 4-x-4 m area around the stump was hand excavated with the help of community volunteers to assist with stump removal. Thousands of historic artifacts, primarily dating between the late 18th through 19th century, were recovered (Figure 3). Upon removal of the stump, the remains of a historic wall and brick and slate floor (ca. 9.8’ x 2.6’) dating to the early 19th century was revealed (Figure 4). The wall appears to be the remnant of an old storage structure (stock house) associated with the 1803 era Danish Guinea Company Warehouse complex. The unseen archaeological resources at the site are varied, abundant, and contain information to address important research questions pertinent to the history of Christiansted, St. Croix and the Virgin Islands. Future archaeological work at the site will be used to enhance the historical narrative of the site and for the history of the people of St. Croix.

Savvy Buying by Amy Land-de Wilde We love what we do! Our business brings us people like you--people who have discovered our island, fallen in love with its beauty and our lifestyle and want to make it a part of their lives. All real estate searches begin with a detailed discussion of hopes, dreams, lifestyle, the future, and budget--how you’re going to pay for it. If you’re one of the fortunate ones who can pay cash for your dream, you‘ll probably see more flexibility with sellers. And speaking of financing, if that’s the way you’ll go, you must get your financing in the U.S. Virgin Islands, or you can take out equity on a property you own stateside and pay cash down here. Condos offer the most bang for the buck in terms of amenities for the price. It is still possible to buy a condo on the sand for less than $100,000, although that inventory is dwindling quickly! Any discussion of condominiums also includes a discussion of condo fees. Ours are higher than you might be used to, but include a lot. A large part of our fees include insurance on the property, which costs more here than in the States. They also include services like landscaping, pool maintenance, a property manager, exterminating, and sometimes cable and internet. Our property taxes are low! To get a sense of our costs here, you basically flip your tax and insurance costs from your own city. Do you want to use your property as a vacation rental when you’re not on island? You will likely not totally cover your costs, and the rental market is cyclical. To be an investor in a vacation property, you need to be relaxed with potential vacancies. Most who buy an island home on St. Croix also plan to enjoy the property themselves. That’s another benefit, in addition to the potential for increased equity and cash flow. Once you purchase an island property, you have all the more reason to come, visit and decompress!

We at Coldwell Banker St. Croix Realty would love to help you get settled more quickly and make the learning curve of our St. Croix seamless. Please call us or drop in while you are on island.

No real estate article would be complete without a discussion of the current market. Many of our customers at Coldwell Banker St. Croix Realty have considered this an ideal time to buy, and they are right. Inventory is firming up, unit sales are way up, and median prices are just starting to rise. The intersection of many positive elements for buyers--low interest rates, motivated sellers, and a wide range of choices--exists right now.
