Good Day and welcome to the United States Virgin Islands! Our people welcome you. We are a unique place to visit with a variety of islands: St. Croix, St. Thomas, St. John, Water Island and dozens of small cays and islets. Each island is unique. Each offers distinct and memorable experiences. St. Croix is our largest island and we invite you to discover our historic towns; Christiansted and Frederiksted and discover the quaint shops and Danish Architecture. St Croix has wide open spaces, magnificent vistas and a unique culture. St. John is almost all National Park and perfectly preserved. It has sparkling turquoise bays and long, lazy beaches. Enjoy the relaxing atmosphere.

by Domitila Vargas, Friendship Committee It’s not by chance that the celebrations of the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico Friendship take place during the National Hispanic Heritage Month. Just like the rest of the nation’s Hispanics, Puerto Ricans in the territory have contributed greatly to society. And the recognition to those contributions is a debt of gratitude from the American people through the Presidential Proclamation to that effect since 1968. Even before that historic year, friendship between these two communities has been history in the making. Puerto Ricans are part of the fiber of these islands since the early past century and maybe from way before. They have contributed to forge the islands’ history and are proud of it. The 1964 change of the Columbus holiday to that of Virgin Islands-Puerto Rico Friendship Day, by the Legislature (Law 2019) was a most deserved recognition of those strong ties and longstanding contributions. The Virgin Islands-Puerto Rico Friendship Committee works diligently every year to make these celebrations especially happy and educational. With a high historic, educational, and cultural content. Everybody is invited to celebrate and enjoy the scheduled events in unity and love. This year the community will be as pleased as always, with the host of festivities and events planned for this important “fiesta” from September 15 to October 15. They will include, among others, the traditional Gospel Night, the Friendship Queen Coronation, a 5k Marathon, Softball/Football tournaments with local teams and from Puerto Rico, the Governor’s Awards Night. Also in the works is the Friendship Parade, the visit of representatives from government dignitaries from Puerto Rico, as well as several educational/artistic groups who will delight students in our local schools, and will also be part of other activities on calendar. The highlight, as always, will be the Friendship Village which will be named in memory of our 1st Hispanic Queen, NEREIDA SANTOS (1960), recently departed, and it promises to be an unforgettable one with the best of the popular music from Puerto Rico and local bands, to include the one and only Stanley and the Ten Sleepless Knights.

DISCOVER A NEW DIMENSION!
Cover Story: Artist El’Roy Simmonds
El’Roy Simmonds.
Born and raised in Christiansted, St. Croix, El’Roy A. Simmonds is a man with a creative soul who has worn many hats including teacher, entrepreneur, musician, and sculptor with the most valuable being that of Fine Artist.
I earned a Bachelor of Education from the College of the Virgin Islands (CVI), now the University of the Virgin Islands. From 19761977, I was an exchange student at the Kuntz Academy in Copenhagen, Denmark where I conducted research on the history of the relationship between Denmark and the US Virgin Islands, reflected in my work. By 1985, I earned my Masters in Fine Art from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York where I worked with live models for drawing, painting, and sculpting. Then I returned home to teach until I retired in 2008. Throughout my childhood years, I can remember being drawn to creating ‘things’ with cardboard and other raw materials while other kids played jump rope, marble, and cowboy and Indian games. I also recall when my grandmother bought me a Huckleberry Finn water coloring set which became my new pastime. During my high school years, I admired how my mentor, Harold Johnson, would sketch the images from Time magazine using color pencils; he gave me my own set adding another tool to my skill box. By my late teens, I began exploring more options like oil-based paint and it piqued my interest in pursuing a career in art but, since CVI only offered basic art classes at the time, I sought a college experience by enrolling in their Teacher’s Program (created by the Government offering free education to high school graduates in exchange for staying on to teach instead of bringing teachers in). This began my journey in education but my desire to pursue art still lingered. Though I had played with art growing up and had a career in education, it was not Page 36 • October / November 2017
until I was employed at the Pearl B. Larsen Elementary school that I was introduced to a fellow teacher by the name of Waldren ‘Wally’ Cluett who taught art at the Eulalie Rivera Elementary school in Grove place. His little family of three and my little family of three became good friends, spending much time together socially and sharing our interests including art. Through this friendship, Wally introduced me to acrylic paint, stretch canvas, and 20th century master artists. From that moment, I fell in love with Art and was committed to pursuing my career. By 1972, I had my first exhibition at the Buccaneer Hotel, hosted by Mrs. Armstrong ,though there were no sales. I had my Second Showing at the Beach Hotel, now Divi Carina Bay Resort, hosted by their manager, Patrick Sweeney. During that show, I made my first sale! In fact, I sold three pieces and knew that I had arrived at a turning point; I made a conscious decision to pursue Art as a career instead of a pastime.

El’Roy has been recognized internationally for his contributions to the Fine Arts in the US Virgin Islands, Denmark, New York, Haiti and beyond. These recognitions range from exhibits in renowned group showings at the Empire Art Gallery in New York to honors by the Virgin Islands Black History Month Committee for outstanding and dedicated contributions to the field of the Arts. He was also commissioned by the US Virgin Islands Department of Conservation and Cultural Affairs Bureau of Libraries, Museums and Archaeological Services, to illustrate the first Government endorsed, V.I. History textbook, known as Clear de Road. In this “new chapter” of his career, El’Roy is recharged, reinvigorated and reinspired by his return to his first love and main passion—Art. He offers many thanks to the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts in Frederiksted, and his friends and family who supported his journey in creating and sharing art through his exhibit “If Walls Could Talk” last year.

Our Danish Connection VELKOMMEN!
A Unique Danish Concept is Making its Way Here! by Nina York A recent announcement that a Danish word has made its way into the American Webster’s Dictionary is a remarkable feat. In a world where English (normally American English) words are making their way into foreign languages at a supersonic speed, we seldom hear of the opposite for foreign words. The word I am talking about is “hygge” (say “higga”) and describes a concept very essential to all Danes. Hygge is best described as a feeling of coziness that is found in a friendly get-together in a comfortable environment, often involving the intake of good food and drink and good conversation. It is accepted among Danes as a defining feature of the happiness that is said to be so prevalent among them. “Hyggelig”, meaning cozy (but so much more), is the compliment most often used when showing appreciation of a successful gathering to the host. But it can also be applied to describing a home, a restaurant, even a town or natural environment. Why is this concept foreign enough to merit special terminology when applied outside of Denmark? Are the Danes such experts at this social skill that it merits a special place in the English language? And what would it take for us in this country to learn such a skill, if it is at all adaptable outside Denmark? Is it confined to an environment of huddling in front of a warming fireplace, wearing woolen sweaters and socks, or can a beach outing also be described as hyggelig? It is my conviction that on this side of the Atlantic we are quite capable of feeling the joy of sharing a happy time with others even in this quite different climate, whether we call the experience hygge or not. We Crucians are known for being rather laid-back, which as I see it fits well within the hygge framework. This past summer provided an opportunity for many Virgin Islanders to experience Danish hygge as guests in the homes of members of the Danish West Indian Society in Denmark for a Festival on the occasion of the Society celebrating its 100th birthday. It illustrated the concept both in interaction with the hosts and in the numerous get-togethers and excursions arranged, providing happy times for all. The element of congeniality and mutual acceptance of each other should always be a priority among us all, and maybe our Tourism Department could promote us in Denmark as the hyggelig island; that description would most likely be a successful tool, and frankly not a misnomer. But we can certainly ask Danish visitors to our island how we can make their visit as hyggelig as possible and listen to their response. They all know what we are talking about!
A hyggelig family meal on a festive occasion will always include candlelight.

Island Weddings MARRY ME ON ST. CROIX!
The Contract Phase
Once you have chosen a wedding date and begin selecting vendors, you enter the contracting phase of wedding planning. Every vendor you work with should produce a contract with services, policies, terms, and payment schedule clearly spelled out. For most wedding vendors, standard procedure is signed contracts and deposits/payments due prior to the date services are rendered. Vendor contracts conclude on the day of the wedding, with the possible exception of your photographer and videographer. Once the wedding is over your photographer begins to process and edit the images taken. Once delivered, an experienced photographer will include a copyright release outlining how these images can be printed or reproduced. “Why do I need permission to print images of MY wedding,?!” you may ask. Simplest answer, copyright law. Although your photographer captured private, intimate, and special moments of you and your loved ones on your wedding day, according to copyright law, every pixel captured is the intellectual property of the artist (photographer). It stands to protect visual artists, performers, writers, and musicians from the threat of having their work stolen, mass produced, sold, or used in a way that was not intended. It also gives the artist the right to use their work however they choose as well. What does this mean for you? Before you contract with a photographer or videographer ask to see a copy of their copyright release form, informing you of your usage rights should you decide to use their service. Discuss your concerns about this or the contract openly. I have worked with clients who wanted to publish their wedding images in publications and clients who did not want their images used for my marketing purposes. Although I am legally within my rights to grant or prohibit usage of the images I shoot, I ultimately want my clients to feel safe with every aspect of my service. At times like this, I may offer a “gentleman’s” agreement to honor and respect a request and secure the integrity of my company.

only completely see through kayak tour, Sea-Thru Kayaks VI, run by longtime local Craig Scott. Come see why locals call us the “best thing on St. Croix to do after dark.” Our island’s most special attraction is the nighttime bioluminescence tour. DIVE EXPERIENCE — Diving St. Croix for 33 years Michelle Pugh, a 39-year resident of St Croix, learned to dive in Los Angeles while high school and hasn’t stopped since! In 1992, along with Jacques Cousteau, she was inducted into the platinum Pro 5000 through SSI. In 2004, she was inducted into the Women Divers Hall of Frame for being the first woman to dive with killer whales in the wilds of Canada, the first American woman to teach diving in Moscow, Russia and for establishing the mooring system on St Croix to protect the coral reefs. Michelle was also given the SBDC and Congressional Award for Entrepreneurial Success for Dive Experience. Sam Halvorson, Captain, Instructor, Dive Master, and Videographer, has been on board for 28 years. He knows the reefs like the back of his hand. His videos are a favorite souvenir! Skeeter, the dog, loves the dive boat and swimming with the divers. Michelle, who’s made over 10,000 dives on St. Croix, is the only dive center owner that actually dives most everyday—guiding lots of customers
by request. While developing the dive mooring sites, she has explored most St Croix reefs and walls. Michelle has also traveled the world just to dive—like the East coast of the US from Florida to Rhode Island, the West coast from Canada to Mexico, The Red Sea, Australia, Solomon IsSusan Wall lands, Borneo, Philippines, the Antarctic, and most of the Caribbean Islands. And, I recently returned from the Galapagos Islands! Dive Experience is St Croix’s first dive operator and the first PADI 5-star IDC center. They teach diving from novice to professional instructors. Located at Kings Alley on the boardwalk, their USCG-licensed dive boat is steps away on the dock. The full-service center features basic snorkel equipment to recreational and professional dive gear from Aqualung (US Divers) plus hats, towels, tees, Trudi Gilliam fish art and the largest Reef sandal selection on island. “With years in the business and my experience over time, I’d can say that Dive Experience is simply the best!” Advertisement

Christiansted Boardwalk.
Always Remember To Drive Left! Whether renting a car or crossing the street, it is vital to remember that traffic in the USVI flows from the left side of the road. St. Croix is 28 miles in length and 7 miles at the widest point with two major towns—Christiansted at the center on the north shore and Frederiksted at the west end. The Caribbean Sea which surrounds the island is always there to guide you along the roads that wind around the coast. Car rental agencies have a variety of vehicles available from sporty jeeps to roomy air-conditioned sedans, vans, and SUVs. The average price usually includes unlimited mileage but you fill the tank upon return! Both US and other driver’s licenses are recognized. The driver and front seat passenger are required by law to use seat belts and cell phone talking or texting is not allowed. Parking in Christiansted is limited and 2-hour parking on parts of Company and Queen Cross Streets is enforced. Look for the signs. There is daytime parking in the National Park Service lot near Ft. Christiansvaern, until 4:30 pm, and a public lot with fees on Strand and King Cross Street. Major roads are asphalt and usually well maintained. The Melvin H. Evans Highway is the only 4-lane, divided highway running from mid-island west to within 1 mile of Frederiksted. The speed limit is 55. In other areas, the 35 mph limit applies; in town, 20 mph unless otherwise posted. Let our Attractions & Tours pages (34 & 35) and our St. Croix Road Map (54 & 55) and town maps (56-58) help you plan your island tour!

Island Worship The history of our island is mirrored in its old church structures, many of which have recently been restored. The Moravian brethren, arriving here in the 1730s from Saxony in today’s Germany, founded their mission to bring Christianity to the enslaved part of the population. The historic Anglican (Episcopalian) churches built in Gothic style include St. John’s in Christiansted and, in Frederiksted, the beautifully restored St. Paul’s church. The large number of Irish settlers, along with Englishmen and Hispanics, have contributed to the presence of the Catholic church; Holy Cross in Christiansted is the oldest in the Virgin Islands. The Danish rule of the island from 1733 to 1917 brought the Lutheran church, which still plays a large role here. Lord God of Sabaoth in Christiansted occupies the former Dutch Reformed Church; Holy Trinity in Frederiksted was built shortly after the town was founded. The Dutch Reformed church (Presbyterian) now has a new mid-island home. These are just a few of the many (over 150) churches on St. Croix, from SeventhDay Adventist to Methodist, Baptist, Church of God, and many more. Church attendance and activities are important to a large part of our population; visitors are always welcome at services, often a high point in their island experience. Many other faiths offer places of worship—a Jewish synagogue, a Hindu temple, and a Moslem mosque, to name a few. An easy-to-follow guide is actually the yellow pages of our local phone book beginning on Page 54. w w w.stcroix thisweek.com
Befolkningen. Virgin Islands befolkning er venlig men tilbageholdende. Man hilser gerne med “Good morning”, “Good Afternoon” og “Good Night.” Tider. Her som alle vegne, vær forsigtig.

Telefon. Se by- og økortene for at finde postkontorerne. Helligdage. Her fejrer man amerikanske helligdage foruden en hel del lokale. Eighth in a series of dive site descriptions.
Hamm’s Bluff — Not a mooring sight but a great drift dive when conditions are right. Lots of caves in cliffs. Reef and Peligic fish abundant here. Occasionally Sperm Whales in October. 16. Butler Bay — A dive that can reached from the beach. Shallow water shelf just bursting with marine life. A great place to see juvenile tropicals to lobster and Nurse Sharks under the ledges. Out in deeper water you will find the area for wreck.

THIS NATIONAL PARK COMMEMORATES OUR DANISH HERITAGE (1733-1917).
CHRISTIANSTED WALKING TOUR Let’s start a leisurely walking tour of CHRISTIANSTED at the site of the Old Scale House 1 on the harborfront, known as the Wharf. One section of the 1856 structure displays the scale used in former days to weigh barrels of rum and sugar. The other section holds a bookstore and gift shop as well as an information center about all things St. Croix. This is one of a complex of five buildings comprising the Christiansted National Historic Site, established in 1952, administered by the National Park Service.

Fort Christiansvaern 3 was the first public building to be started by the Danes after the island was purchased from France in 1733. It is built of Danish yellow brick and was completed in 1749 and later expanded. Its present appearance reflects the 1830’s period. The exhibit rooms have shifting exhibits of local relevance. See Events Calendar for current exhibits. Admission tickets are sold at the entrance ($3); Senior passes are accepted. Open every day from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm which also coincides with the hours of the adjacent Fort Parking Lot whose hours are strictly enforced. Brochures for all three parks available. The Steeple Building 4 across Hospital Street, formerly the Lutheran Church dates from 1753. This site, on the Walking Tour, is currently closed for renovation. Across Company Street lies the onetime Danish West India & Guinea Company Warehouse 5 , built in 1749. In its courtyard, slave auctions were formerly held. NPS 2nd Thursday Lectures held here.

Originally, Government House 6 on King Street, was built as a home for a Danish merchant. That section dates from 1749; another section, the previous town house of a wealthy Danish plantation owner, was joined to it in 1826, together becoming the seat of the Danish West Indies government. The grand staircase and portico were added in 1830, as was the impressive ballroom/reception hall on the second floor by Governor General Peter von Scholten, who had his office and official residence here. The former are open to the public (entrance at mid-building on King Street). The Lutheran Church 7 across Queen Cross Street on King Street, was originally the Dutch Reformed Church, built in the 1740’s and transferred to the Lutherans in 1831, who brought the furnishings here from the Steeple Building. Later, the steeple was added. Walking up Queen Cross Street to Company Street takes you to Apothecary Hall 8 on the left corner, which holds both the tiny Apothecary Museum on Queen Cross Street, open anytime, and in the courtyard the Archaeological Museum, open only Saturdays 10 am-2 pm. Nearby on Company Street is the Old Market 9 , laid out in the original town plan from 1735, and still being used. The well dates from 1863. On this square you will also find the downtown Post Office.
Christiansted National Historic Site Established in 1952, Christiansted National Historic Site was the first unit of the National Park Saystem in the US Virgin Islands. The park’s historic buidings and grounds commemorate the Danish heritage (1733-1917) of the town of Christiansted, St. Croix, which was named in honor of the reigning King of Denmark and Norway, Christian VI. In the 1700s, Christiansted was part of a mercantile system that linked Europe,West Africa, and the Caribbean in the infamous “Triangular Trade.” Christiansted was the first town in the Lesser Antilles to be built on the grid system and to have a building code. Its distinctive colonial architecture reflects the town’s status as capital of the Danish West Indies (1755-1871); the great wealth generated by the export of cane sugar, molasses, and rum; and the influence of government building inspectors. Governor General Peter von Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the enslaved population in the Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848, from adjacent Buddhoe Park 2. The park contains a bronze bust of the renowned slave rebellion leader. The Oscar E. Henry Customs House 3 was built in the 1800s. The Freedom Fountain 4, facing the pier, was installed for the Emancipation 150th Anniversary Celebration. 63 After severe damage during a labor insurrection in 1878, the town was rebuilt in Victorian style. Victoria House 5, on Strand Street, and Apothecary Hall 6, on King Cross Street between King and Queen Streets, preserve the Frederksted architecture of that time. The Visitor’s Bureau 7, is located upstairs on Strand Street above the Frederiksted Mall and next door to the historic light blue building housing the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts 8. Frederiksted is home to a number of historic churches, including St. Paul’s Episcopal Church 9, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church 10, Friedensberg Moravian Church 11, and St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church 12. The newly restored Old Danish School 13, on Hospital Street and Market Street, is a handsome building. At Strand and Queen Cross Streets is the Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library 14, built in 1803. The Market Place 15, is still in use today, as it was in 1751 at the founding of Frederiksted.

fter St. Croix became a colony of Denmark in 1733, much of the island’s economy was dominated by industrial production of sugar cane to make sugar, molasses, and rum, until sugar production ended in the 1960s. For labor the planters relied on the slave trade and a brutal system that enslaved and oppressed the Africans who built the plantations and grew sugar cane. After Emancipation in 1848, free laborers received low wages to cultivate sugar, which continued after transfer to the United States in 1917. This agricultural past, shapes the Crucian landscape today, not only in the factories, windmills, and estate houses that remain but also the place names, road system, and property boundaries. Less visible are laborers’ homes and cemeteries, though some can still be found.
from the VISHPO returned to explore the area in 2002. Carefully scraping the ground with shovels and hand trowels they traced the outline of grave shafts without disturbing the interred individuals, revealing a “lost”cemetery with over 33 human burials. This is an enslaved African cemetery, based on the associated artifacts and a 1779 map showing it would have been located in the slave village. This is a significant find. Usually, slave cemeteries are discovered accidentally through damage by construction projects. In this case, individual burials are clearly visible and they are intact. Additionally, over 70 features associated with the village preserve evidence of the lives of enslaved Africans. Archaeologists recovered fragments of hand-made ceramic pots and imported ceramic vessels, spoons, knives, beads, clay smoking pipes, and other objects. As a result, the VING headquarters was built elsewhere, protecting the cemetery and village near the tamarind.
The sugar plantation at Estate Lower Bethlehem Old Works, located in the center of St. Croix north of Centerline Road, encapsulates Crucian history from the 1730s until it shut down in 1966. Later, the Government of the Virgin Islands took over the property. Ownership passed from the Crown to Danish families and American corporations, including the U.S. Government. By the mid-twentieth century the Bethlehem Central Factory employed over 2,000 people, many of whom lived with their families on site or nearby. Today the former factory is leased to Farmers In Action, Inc., with an adjacent parcel leased to the Virgin Islands National Guard (VING). When the VING began developing the site in the 1980s, it coordinated with the Virgin Islands State Historic Preservation Office (VISHPO) to comply with local and federal laws that protect archaeological resources.
Over the past fifteen years, it has remained a challenge to make this site accessible to Crucians and other visitors, with limited funding. Moreover, so much about life at Bethlehem can still be learned, as new archival records become available. Members of the last generation who lived and worked at Bethlehem preserve memories of St. Croix’s “third town,” and some oral histories had been published. In 2017, research resumed at the cemetery and village, with ten students from St. Mary’s College of Maryland directed by the author, who worked on the 2002 project, and Professor Iris Carter Ford, a cultural anthropologist, who did archive research, ethnographic interviews, and archaeology. Interviews recorded details of life at Bethlehem, documenting who had lived in houses, leisure time activities, foods people ate, and plants and trees they used. Excavations at the front of a stone and mortar labor house inhabited in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries reveal laborers’ use of social space. Archival records we found list enslaved persons who had died there. In the future, these findings will help the VING to interpret the site and make it available to visitors.
In 1997, National Park Service archaeologists had identified a few possible human burials near a large tamarind tree. As the VING planned to build a new headquarters, archaeologists

O
ver these months the sky over the Virgin Islands will dazzle with planets, stars, meteors, and an eclipse of the Sun.
As the sky grows dark, high in the west is the very bright star-like object Jupiter. Just south of Jupiter is the bright star of Spica, a grain of wheat being held in the hand of Virgo, the goddess of the harvest. At the same time, high in the southern sky is a bright red star, Antares, the red heart of Scorpius, the scorpion. Antares is the heart of the scorpion; perhaps you can see the stars that form the scorpion’s long curved tail. Scorpius is one of the few constellations, or star groups, that looks something like you thing it should. North of Antares is a bright star-like object, not as bright as Jupiter, this is Saturn. Venus will dominate t early morning eastern sky. Venus is the third brightest natural object in the sky after the Sun and the Moon. You should be able to easily spot three bright stars which form a large triangle. Since the triangle is visible all night long during the Summer up north, it is called the Summer Triangle. Each bright star marks a different star group or constellation. Farthest West and lowest in the sky is Vega, part of Lyra the Harp. To the South is Altair, in Aquila the Eagle. The third bright star is Deneb, marking the tail of

Cygnus, the Swan. Perhaps you can see other stars which form the Swan’s body, neck and head and its wings which spread wide. Cygnus is flying South along the Milky Way. The Milky Way looks like a hazy band of light arcing across the sky. It is the light from billions and billions of stars so far away, that all we see is their light combined into this haze. From time-to-time the Earth passes through a cloud of dust left behind by a comet and you can see a meteor shower. The dark clear skies of the Virgin Islands make the islands a great place to see these “shooting stars”. About fifty miles above the Earth, walnut size pieces of dust and ice are passing through the air so quickly that they burn up and you see a flash of light, a shooting star. The flash happens so quickly that if you say to a friend “look over there”, by the time they look the flash will be gone. July, August, and October all bring meteor showers. The Delta Aquarids is an average shower that can produce up to 20 meteors per hour at its peak on the night of July 29th to the morning of July 30th. In the early morning hours of August 12th you will be able to see the Persid meteor shower, the best meteor shower of the year. The comet which left the dust behind which forms the Persids is comet Swift-Tuttle. Swift-
Tuttle was discovered in 1862. It was found again in 1992 and astronomers have since found records of it going back to 69 BC. The Orionids is an average shower producing up to 20 meteors per hour at its peak. It is produced by dust grains left behind by comet Halley, which has been known and observed since ancient times. The shower peaks this year on the morning of October 22nd. On August 21st there will be a solar eclipse as the Moon will come directly between the Earth and the Sun. From the northern Pacific Ocean, across much of the United States, and out into the Atlantic Ocean the Moon will completely block out the Sun and people will experience a Total Solar Eclipse. In USVI the Moon will only partially cover the Sun: the partial eclipse begins at 2:14 pm, the maximum of the eclipse is at 3:36 pm, and the partial eclipse ends at 4:47 pm. It is important to never look directly at the Sun without proper eye protection. Sunglasses are NOT proper eye protection. The Sun will shine directly overhead on the equator on September 22nd and there will be nearly equal amounts of day and night throughout the world. This is the first day of Fall (autumnal equinox) in the Northern Hemisphere and the first day of Spring (vernal equinox) in the Southern Hemisphere.
