On behalf of the people and Government of the United States Virgin Islands, I applaud St. Croix This Week magazine for highlighting the best in entertainment, siteseeing, dining, shopping, and a myriad of recreational activities available on St. Croix. Both residents and visitors will find on page after page of this helpful resource guide eyecatching attractions, on-island features, and other points of interest. Whether with family, friends, or on your own, this magazine has the inside track and advance view of all the upcoming events and activities on the “Big Island.” St. Croix’s relaxing beaches and rolling hillsides are the perfect complement for a weekend get-away, and the downtown shopping and restaurants in Christiansted and Frederiksted offer a variety of choices. There are hiking tours, snorkeling and scuba excursions, rainforest sights, and an abundance of other natural and cultural attractions throughout the island. The options for fun and entertainment are truly limitless, and St. Croix This Week provides immediate access to all of St. Croix’s major attractions, while highlighting those that are off-the-beaten path. As the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Croix has a natural beauty that is both charming and awe-inspiring. Its wondrous landscapes, hillside views, oceanfronts, and downtown areas tell the story of an island rich in culture and history. The influence from Denmark is readily visible in our architecture and windmills, offering a pleasant introduction to the experience of our people of strong Caribbean traditions. With a long history of providing the inside scoop on the latest and best in family fun and island excursion entertainment, St. Croix This Week truly captures the beat and pulse of our people. It is my pleasure to extend best wishes to all readers of St. Croix This Week for a safe and enjoyable experience in paradise. We hope you will enjoy our home as much as we enjoy hosting you.

Celebrating Black History

As the country tips its hat to the black men and women who have left their stamp, St. Croix celebrates its own, as well. We retell the stories of our legendary native sons. We hand down their history in our poetry and plays; we commemorate them in the classroom and in exhibits. Old Crucian storytellers cast back. We gather ‘round and listen. Each February, St. Croix this Week honors the achievements of eminent Virgin Islanders. To name but a few: Peter Bentzon: (c.1783 – after 1850) The first Black silversmith to add his maker’s mark to his work, Perter Bentzon was born free on St. Thomas to a Norwegian father and a mulatto mother of European ancestry. He left the Danish West Indies in 1791 to study in Philadelphia. There, Bentzon apprenticed as a silversmith between 1799 and 1806. For the next 40 years, he lived and worked as a jeweler and silversmith between Philadelphia and St. Croix. The St. Louis Art Museum and the Philadelphia Museum of Art display his work. William Alexander Leidesdorff: (1810-1848) The son of a Danish sugar planter and a mother of black and native Caribbean heritage, William Alexander Leidesdorff, Jr. was born on St. Croix. He left the island as a young man bound for the marine industry in New Orleans. He became a U.S. citizen and found his calling as a shipmaster. In 1841, Leidesdorff sailed to California and launched the first steamboat in San Francisco Bay. He built the city’s first shipping warehouse and first hotel. California recognizes Leidesdorff as the “African Founding Father of California.”

Hamilton Jackson

David Hamilton Jackson: (1894-1945) Born in Christiansted during the late Danish Colonial era, David Hamilton Jackson became an educator, newspaper editor and publisher, labor leader, judge and legislator. Having petitioned the King of Denmark to repeal a law requiring censorship of publications, Hamilton founded the first free newspaper in the Danish West Indies. In 1913, he organized the first local labor union. Virgin Islanders celebrate Liberty Day in his honor on November 1st.

Hubert Harrison

Hubert Henry Harrison: (1883-1927) Crucian born, Hubert Henry Harrison was regarded as the Black intellect of his time. In 1916-17, he founded the New Negro Movement in Harlem and created the movement’s Liberty League and its first newspaper, the Voice. The New Negro Movement called for political equality and an end to segregation and lynchings. A scholar, educator, orator, writer and publisher, Harrison became known as the “Father of Harlem Radicalism.”

When Shopping on St. Croix, US citizens can enjoy a Duty-Free Allowance of $1600.00 per person, including children, every 30 days whether buying to pack or mail. A small percentage is added on for purchases over that amount. When returning to the US you will be required to fill out a separate customs form for these items. You may be asked to show your receipts so it is important to keep a good record of what you buy. This Duty-Free Allowance is double the $800.00 limit from other islands, so make your important purchases on St. Croix. You may also take 5 cartons of cigarettes and 6 bottles of liquor back as long as one of the bottles is a product made in the Virgin Islands such as our rum. Outside this allowance you can mail gifts to friends and relatives (not including tobacco and alcohol)—one package a day to the same address up to $100.00 in value with no declaration. Shop Christiansted and Gallows Bay Marketplace plus Frederiksted and Mid-island for all that we have to offer! Check out the Easy Shopping Guide on page 10 to find what you’re looking for.

The history of our island is mirrored in its old church structures, many of which have recently been restored. The Moravian brethren, arriving here in the 1730s from Saxony in today’s Germany, founded their mission to bring Christianity to the enslaved part of the population. Their handsome yellow buildings at the entrance to Christiansted and red-roofed white wooden church mid-island, along with a contemporary church in Frederiksted, attest to their continued importance.

The historic Anglican (Episcopalian) churches built in Gothic style include St. John’s in Christiansted, and in Frederiksted the beautifully restored St. Paul’s church, which had been damaged by a fire in 1996. These and other Anglican churches bear witmess to the large English population which settled here (and also brought us our custom of left lane driving. The large number of Irish settlers, along with Englishmen and Hispanics, have contributed to the presece of the Catholic church; Holy Cross in Christiansted is the oldest in the Virgin Islands; also significant and historic are St. Ann’s (with an interesting shrine) mid-island, St. Joseph’s on Centerline, and St. Patrick’s in Frederiksted. The Danish rule of the island from 1733 to 1917 brought the Lutheran church, which still plays a large role here. Lord God of Sabaoth in Christiansted occupies the former Dutch Reformed Church; Holy Trinity in Frederiksted was built shortly after the town was founded. The Dutch Reformed church (Presbyterian) now has an new mid-island home. But these are just a few of the many (at last count over 150) churches on St. Croix, from Seventh-Day Adventist to Methodist, Baptist, Church of God, any many more. You will find that church attendance and activities are important to a large part of our population, and visitors are always welcome at services, often a high point in their experience of our island. Many other faiths offer places of worship: a Jewish synagoge, a Hindu temple, and a Moslem mosque, to name a few. Galangal – 340-773-0076 As one approaches the 1729 House, the tan one across from Fort Christiansvaern Park, the Galangal sign, made from wine corks by a patron, is hardly visible from the street. Opening the aubergine door is almost magical as one steps inside an elegant white-table dining room filled with original paintings, and Indo-Colonial architectural elements. Sitting down at the cool, dry granite bar, one just knows their Martini is going to be ice cold and the red wine will be at 65 degrees. Galangal specializes in authentic modern Thai cuisine, combining traditional ingredients with international flavors and techniques. Freshness is the key to Galangal’s bold flavors and consistent quality. Spices from Vietnam and Singapore, curry pastes from Bangkok and unusual Asian vegetables grown in our own gardens give Galangal’s dishes their unique and authentic flavors. Even the soup is made à la minute. St. Croix’s #1 dining destination- (tripadvisor.com). Dinner 5:30 - 9:30. Closed Sunday and Monday.

Savant – 340-713-8666 This little place is hard to describe. It has the ultimate food with a really cool vibe. Inside is cozy and sophisticated as well. The Courtyard is an open-air piece of art they do tell. The food is the most creative they say (voted “Most Creative Cuisine,” Daily News 2009 Readers’ Poll). From our kitchen comes fresh fish, grilled baby calamari, and our famous stuffed filet. The specials are over the top — you just won’t know what to order in this little spot. As hard as you try, you might never find as interesting a place as this to dine — from the food, to the wine, to the magic of this place and even to your waiter’s happy little face. People travel from one place to the next but always return and say Savant is the best. We could list all of our awards and all our grand fetes, but the best thing to do is just ask anybody on the streets! Dinner, Monday-Saturday, 6-10pm.

WINE: BEST PICK! Chiusa Grande Vino Follia Pinot Grigio & Vino Sophia Pecorino By Anne Salafia

Divi Carina Bay Resort & Casino — 4 Restaurants At Your Service!

In search of a good warm weather wine with nice value, I consulted Pietro Bartocci of Italian VI Trading. His choices: Vino Follia Pinot Grigio and Vino Sophia Pecorino from the organic Chiusa Grande vineyards in Abruzzo. “These wines go beautifully with all the vegetables and fish we eat here,” said Pietro. He imports them directly from the vineyard to the Territory and foregoes middle men and import taxes. “The owner of Chiusa Grande is an extravagant man, a farmer and a poet. When he wanted to grow organic grapes, friends called him crazy. They knew it would take years before his soil became organic,” Pietro said. The vintner pressed on and named his first wine for the foolery they had accused him of--Vino Follia. “This Pinot Grigio is dry but with a sense of the Mediterranean, spicy with fruit but not flowery,” said Pietro. “Its beauty is its rustic simplicity.” Vino Sophia, the only organic Pecorino in Italy, offers more citrus and a flowery flavor. Neither dry nor sweet, it has developed a cult following in Italy. “It’s hard to find but lovely to drink,” Pietro said. “The Pecorino grape, known by the Romans, may be Italy’s oldest grape.” “I enjoy Vino Sophia so much; I understand why my ancestors--the Romans-loved their Pecorino!” said Pietro. It pairs with fish, white meat, cheeses, and a good simple dish of spaghetti. Find Vino Follia and Vino Sophia at Quality Foods and Plaza Extra for about $13.00. www.stcroix thisweek .com

Island Weddings MARRY ME ON ST. CROIX!

Off the Beaten Path

hat could be more romantic than beginning your life together on a beautiful island? Whether you say your vows on a spectacular hilltop, a white-sandy beach, or floating on a boat, our reflective turquoise waters will surround you for the occasion. St. Croix has the accommodations, caterers, ceremony and reception sites, churches, clothing, consultants, flowers, invitations, jewelry, photographers, planners, restaurants, and transportation to make it happen.

The idea of a Virgin Islands destination wedding often conjures up visions of desolate sandy beaches, golden sunsets, and great weather. More often than not these three elements make beautiful weddings.

Although beach weddings are the cornerstone of the Virgin Islands wedding market, there is more the VI has to offer beyond its beautiful shores. Every so often I come across a couple who is interested in a tropical destination wedding but has no interest in beachside nuptials. Thankfully there are several options to consider that are just as beautiful, just as private, and most importantly just as tropical as getting married on a beach! The Virgin Islands has a wealth of privatelyowned villas in a wide rage of locations that show off the diversity of landscapes we have to offer— many with an ocean view. Ranging from elegant and modest to palatial, a private villa can serve not only as a wedding venue but as the primary accommodations for both you and your guests. A few things to keep in mind if you consider posting your wedding in a private villa are maximum capacity restrictions and vendor capabilities. For instance, some villa owners only allowed a certain amount of guests on their property at one time making your guest list limited. Also, most wedding services that would be readily available at a hotel, such as catering and party rentals, would have to be hired independently. However, if you are up to the task of customizing your wedding or if you are working with a wedding planner this is minor detail. The idea is to create the destination wedding experience you want. Knowing that there are choices beyond the beautiful beaches will help you make more informed decisions while planning your Virgin Islands destination wedding.

LADY JASMYN— PERFECT FOR DAY TRIPS, EXECUTIVE DIVES OR LONG CRUISES!

Lady Jasmyn Charters—Your Customized Cruising Experience The Lady Jasmyn is a 46’ power catamaran offering stability and comfort for day cruises around St Croix or exploration charters in St John and the BVI’s. Captain Norm Rouleau and First Mate Jamie Batson tailor each and every charter to meet the needs of their guests. They have been cruising in and around the US and British VI’s for almost 20 years and love sharing their favorite harbors, interesting sites, best beach bars and onshore dining spots with their guests. “One of the things that sets us apart from other charters is that Norm is an engineer and a Jack of All Trades. I know that everyone on board can count on him not only for expert navigation and competent seamanship (Captain Norm has a 100-ton USCG license)—but for any mechanical, electrical or plumbing happenstance. For longer cruises, I really appreciate that we have the ability to pretty much fix anything,” reports Jamie.

On deck in Christiansted Harbor.

Norm and Jamie have been living on St Croix since 1995, going back to Maine for summers, but call St Croix home and the many friends they have here “family”. The Lady Jasmyn is the fourth boat they have owned on island and it blends all the best features of their previous vessels. “I really wanted the stable platform and the space that the double hull gives us,” says Norm. “The 24’ beam, combined with the large cockpit and flybridge, give our guests loads of room to gather together—or

to get some time alone. It’s the perfect boat for day trips, executive dives or longer cruises.” Jamie has a graduate degree in counseling and life planning and is a professional nonprofit consultant with clients on island and in the states. An accomplished cook, she delights in preparing meals and making sure guests have an incredible experience. Jamie also helps couples create their ideal wedding experience as a registered St Croix wedding officiant performing weddings aboard and on land. The Lady Jasmyn is the charter on St Croix for getting off the “beaten path”. The crew has expanded to include an awardwinning snorkeling guide, eager to help guests explore some of the little-known and fabulously-populated reefs around St Croix. Put that together with great food, friendly and knowledgeable hosts and you are guaranteed an experience to remember!

He and his father love to share their local knowledge with the guests aboard and give them a very personalized snorkeling tour of Buck Island Reef. FEEMP Snorkel Outing.

Jenn Travis

The Friends of the St. Croix East End Marine Park (Friends) host fun events every month to raise awareness about the territory’s first marine park, offer sustainable recreational activities, and link the Park to the community. Every other month, Friends Coordinator Jenn Travis leads a snorkel outing at one of many beautiful bays in the EEMP. The snorkel outings are a great way to get to know the diversity of our local marine habitats. In March, the Friends will snorkel Boiler Bay on the northeastern corner of St. Croix. Boiler Bay is a beautiful ecosystem near the deep waters of the eastern Caribbean Sea. These cooler, nutrient-rich waters surge into the bay affording great habitat for healthy stands of federally threatened Elkhorn and Staghorn corals. Diverse, shallow patch reefs in the bay serve as spawning grounds for many herbivorous fish. All those fish attract the high-flying antics of avian predators like osprey, frigates, and terns. Boiler Bay’s beach is lined with a robust Seagrape and Manchineel forest. The trees trap sediment and buffer the bay’s waters from silty runoff so the water is clear and clean. The sandy beaches flanking the trees are commonly used by endangered hawksbill and green sea turtles during nesting seasons. These snorkel outings are for anyone with some snorkeling experience. Bring your own mask, snorkel, and fins, a reusable bottle for drinking water and join us! In March, we’ll meet at the entrance to Cramer’s Park at 9am. St. Croix

ARRIVAL. US citizens don’t need a passport; departing visitors need a photo ID. LOCATION. St. Croix lies 18 north latitude and 65 west longitude, about 700 miles from the equator. The Virgin Islands are part of the Antilles chain from the Bahamas down to Trinidad. St. Croix is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea. VIRGIN ISLANDERS. Virgin Islanders are a reserved but friendly people. “Good Morning,” “Good Afternoon,” and “Good Night” are welcome Crucian greetings. Everyone speaks English or a lilting version of it. CLIMATE. Year-round temperatures range in the 80s during the day, 70s most nights, with summer somewhat warmer. Easterly trade winds keep the humidity down. Most island showers are over in minutes. Residents collect rainwater from rooftops into household cisterns. Saltwater distillation plants help the supply. With water scarce, it is used sparingly. TIME. We are on Atlantic Standard in the winter, one hour ahead of Eastern Standard. During the summer, we are the same time as Eastern Daylight Savings. WHAT TO WEAR. Island dress is casual but bathing suits and men without shirts in town or grocery stores is frowned upon. Men don’t need ties or jackets; hats are great sun protectors for everyone. No adaptors needed for personal plug-ins.

is located in a Strand Street courtyard near the Pier; open weekdays & cruise-ship days. A Christiansted National Historic Site Visitor’s Orientation Center is located at Scale House on King Street at the Wharf. The seasoned traveler doesn’t take chances. Klima. Tider. Her som alle vegne, vær forsigtig.

Telefon. Se by- og økortene for at finde postkontorerne. Helligdage. Her fejrer man amerikanske helligdage foruden en hel del lokale. RENTAL CARS, TAXI & TOUR INFORMATION

Christiansted National Historic Site Established in 1952, Christiansted National Historic Site was the first unit of the National Park Saystem in the US Virgin Islands. The park’s historic buidings and grounds commemorate the Danish heritage (1733-1917) of the town of Christiansted,

St. Croix, which was named in honor of the reigning King of Denmark and Norway, Christian VI. In the 1700s, Christiansted was part of a mercantile system that linked Europe,West Africa, and the Caribbean in the infamous “Triangular Trade.” Christiansted was the first town in the Lesser Antilles to be built on the grid system and to have a building code. Its distinctive colonial architecture reflects the town’s status as capital of the Danish West Indies (1755-1871); the great wealth generated by the export of cane sugar, molasses, and rum; and the influence of government building inspectors. Take two tours—“Free Gut” is the freed black neighborhood of Christiansted established by the Danish in 1748 and “Gallows Bay” is the fishing community that sustained Christiansted’s fish market for more than two centuries. Free Gut, $35., Gallows Bay, $15. Make Reservations with Eastern National Bookstore at the Scale House. 340-719-4091

Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge

St. Croix Dive Sites

Sixth in a series of dive site descriptions. 11.6The Pavillions – Lots of coral and sponge, very colorful

dive. Sting Rays in sand on top of wall and occasional school of Spade Fish. Lobster and crabs, and tons of reef fish call this home. 12. The famous “Wall” at Cane Bay – Most popular beach dive on St. Croix, a bit of a swim north from the beach puts you in 3,000 feet of water. Great dive for beginners, lots of coral heads in shallow water and then the dramic drop for the certified divers.

Let’s start a leisurely walking tour of CHRISTIANSTED at the site of the Old Scale House 1 on the harborfront, known as the Wharf. One section of the 1856 structure displays the scale used in former days to weigh barrels of rum and sugar. The other section holds a bookstore and gift shop as well as an information center about all things St. Croix. This is one of a complex of five buildings comprising the Christiansted National Historic Site, established in 1952, administered by the National Park Service. Nearby, The Old Customs House 2 with its sweeping staircase, on the grassy area next to the Fort, was completed in 1830. It now holds National Park Service offices. Fort Christiansvaern 3 was the first public building to be started by the Danes after the island was purchased from France in 1733. It is built of Danish yellow brick and was completed in 1749 and later expanded. Its present appearance reflects the 1830’s period. Furnishings from that era are on display; also an exhibit on local military history. At the entrance admission tickets to the Fort and Steeple Building are sold ($3) and brochures available.

Anglican Church Catholic Church Lutheran Church Moravian Church Public Library Rest Rooms

Open Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm, weekends 9 am to 5 pm. 2 hour parking available on site. The Steeple Building 4 across Hospital Street, formerly the Lutheran Church and dates from 1753. It houses a display documenting aspects of the religious history of St. Croix. Ask for opening hours at the Fort. Across Company Street lies the onetime Danish West India & Guinea Company Warehouse 5 , built in 1749. In its courtyard, slave auctions were formerly held. Government House 6 on King Street was in part the former home of a Danish merchant. That section dates from 1749; another section, the previous town house of a wealthy Danish plantation owner, was joined to it in 1826, together becoming the seat of the Danish West Indies government. The grand staircase and portico were added in 1830, as was the impressive ballroom/reception hall on the second floor by Governor General Peter von Scholten, who had his office and official residence here. The former are open to the public (entrance at mid-building on King Street). The Virgin Islands Tourism office (open weekdays only) is downstairs fronting the Lutheran Church. The Lutheran Church 7 across Queen Cross Street on King Street, was originally the Dutch Reformed Church, built in the 1740’s and transferred to the Lutherans in 1831, who brought the furnishings here from the Steeple Building. Later, the steeple was added. Walking up Queen Cross Street to Company Street takes you to Apothecary Hall 8 on the left corner, which holds both the tiny Apothecary Museum on Queen Cross Street, open anytime, and in the courtyard the Archaeological Museum, open only Saturdays 10 am-2 pm. Nearby on Company Street is the Old Market 9 , laid out in the original town plan from 1735, and still being used. The well dates from 1863. On this square you will also find the downtown Post Office. February / March 2014 • Page 57

CATCH A FREE JAZZ CONCERT AT THE FREDERIKSTED BANDSTAND FEB 21 & MAR 21 Getting West St. Croix’ West End offers beautiful sandy, calm beaches, great snorkeling and wreck or pier diving, spectacular sunsets, and the lush subtropical forest. You can reach Frederiksted with its quaint, historic town architecture in several ways. The four-lane Melvin Evans Highway is your speediest route, if you are coming from the east. Most drivers take Queen Mary Highway (Centerline Road), which also takes you to the St. George Village Botanical Garden, the Cruzan Rum Factory, and Whim Plantation Museum, all just off the Queen Mary Highway.

King Cross St

Governor General Peter von Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the enslaved population in the Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848, from adjacent Buddhoe Park. The park contains a bronze bust of the renowned slave rebellion leader. The Oscar E. Henry Customs House was built in the 1800’s. The building is undergoing renovations. The Visitors’ Bureau, normally located here, has been temporarily moved to an upstairs location in the courtyard of a nearby building on Strand Street. The Freedom Fountain facing the pier was installed for the Emancipation 150th anniversary celebration. In a historic light blue building down a block is the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts. After severe damage during a labor insurrection in 1878, the town was rebuilt in Victorian style. Victoria House on Strand Street and Apothecary Hall on King Cross Street between King and Queen Streets preserve the Frederiksted architecture of that time. Frederiksted is home to a number of historic churches, including St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Holy Trinity Lutheran Chruch, Friedensberg Moravian Church, and St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. The newly restored Old Danish School on Hospital Street and Market Street is a handsome building. At Strand and Queen Cross Streets is the Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library, built in 1803. The Market Place is still in use today, as it was in 1751 at the founding of Frederiksted. There are ATMs at the Scotiabank and First Bank locations on Strand Street. After hours, swipe your card at the door to get inside. The Frederiksted waterfront is home to Sunset Jazz concerts, held the third Friday of the month from 5:30 to 8 p.m.. Admission is free to the public. A public beach with showers and bathrooms is next to Fort Frederik.

Take Creque Dam Road (Route 58) through scenic valleys and under towering trees. This road is passable by car, but narrow and a bit rough. The rainforest can be explored by car, 4 WD (unpaved West Scenic Road can be impassable after heavy rains) or on horseback. Among area attractions are the Lawaetz Family Museum and lovely gardens at Estate Little La Grange, the impressive Estate Mt. Washington ruins, the nearby giant baobab trees at Butler Bay, and the infamous beer-drinking pigs!

Hospital St

You can also travel west through the rainforest on Route 76, Mahogany Road (which farther east is Route 72, Midland Road). If you are a bit adventurous, turn off on 765 or 763 (see signs for Creque Dam Farm and Mt. Victory Camp, both worth a visit)

Hill St

Strand St

North of town are several wonderful beaches and eateries where you can toast the famous Green Flash at sunset. You can pick up Route 63 along the water north of the Fort, or if you want to bypass the town when coming from the Queen Mary Highway, take the La Grange Road, Route 63, by turning rights just after Whim Museum.

Turn left at the Post Office (this is Fisher Street). Frederiksted town is rebounding, thanks to a recent $14 million revitalization project. To get to Strand Street, Fort Frederik and the beautifully landscaped waterfront and the Pier, turn right just before the fishermen’s boat ramp and market shed at the end of Fisher Street. This is a great starting point for a walking tour of the town with its many historic buildings.

ARTS in the U. S. Virgin Islands Part 11 in a series Excerpts from “Arts in the U. S. Virgin Islands” by Ruth S. Moore and David M. Hough of the Caribbean Research Institute of the College of the Virgin Islands, 1967, for the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts. CREATING STYLE comes as an outgrowth of personal development in the total environment – a heritage in the making. In a sampling survey of Virgin Islands young people under twenty, every interest garnered votes. In descending popularity they were:

Finding form and in that form, order, is the artist’s delight. He may reflect disorder and ugliness in the world but his intuition leads him to find order in the universe.

Dancing Movies TV Records Radio Sports Singing Reading Making things Playing instruments Card playing Photography Performing Collecting Painting Carving Writing Composing If these early returns indicate a trend, they emphasize what has been borne out in every state where similar surveys have been made. The professional is too often faced with privation while practicing his art full time, or exhaustion from trying to practice it while supporting himself in some other occupation. If there is a common denominator for the individual artist it is his need to function to the fullest extent. He lacks two things – opportunity to work at his art and visibility so that others may react to his work. FINDING FORM and in that form, order, is the artist’s delight. He may reflect disorder and ugliness in the world but his intuition leads him to find order in the universe. The growing up generation needs to know not only his work but his vision. Who will help them find form? Should we support the arts and to what extent? It is easy to call to mind a variety of subsides in agriculture, industry and trade in the national economy. The latest comer, with the smallest purse, has been the National Council on the Arts created by Congress in 1965. It has been only a nickel in the pot but it has stimulated an endless chain of action and interaction. These national and local efforts are based www.stcroix thisweek .com

on the principle that the professional in the arts needs to exist so that art can be experienced and understood. Once he is a functioning part of the scene, education in the arts is possible and vocational activity and appreciation are on a firm footing. It is a list of interests. It is a list of environment. It is a list of opportunity. What style will they create? GETTING THE MESSAGE from the rest of the world depends upon opening up the receiving and sending channels of exchange. In celebration of UNESCO’s 20h anniversary, one of Latin America’s leading historians (German Arciniegas) wrote, “The messages no longer come from Europe alone; they come and go in all directions, intersecting, contradicting and complementing each other. Every year folk art groups from India, the Soviet Union, Mexico, Bali, Rumania or Japan appear on the Paris stage; festivals of Western music are organized in Tokyo; The Bolshoi Ballet travels to London, Buenos Aires and Botota; a travelling exhibition takes a matchless array of Japanese art to every part of the United States. Never before have we witnessed cultural exchange on so tremendous a scale.”

And while we say hurrah for cultural exchange an American writer and critic comes up with a pause for thought and the plea that in this international mix which influences art forms around the world, we do not forget our own folk arts which give the nation and the region its distinctness and its group satisfactions.

State arts councils are urged to do and be many things at one time: to remember the professional artist on whom all rests but at the same time to keep in mind art education and appreciation for all people; to avoid the trap of stodgy “safe” art but at the same time to be able to discern the truly creative experimental artist of the avant garde among the fakes. At the same time, the councils must raise money, substantial money, because government recognition in Federal funds is a tiny token. The United States Government spends barely more than one cent per person a year on the arts compared to seventy cents in the United Kingdom and $1.70 in Austria.

Our Caribbean Community Theatre is a performing arts non-profit organization established on St. Croix in 1985 presenting a full season of theatre from November through July. CCT will showcase its production of RENT beginning Friday, February 7, for three consecutive weekends. The rock musical by Jonathan Larson tells the story of a group of struggling young artists and musicians who create a life for themselves in New York City in the early 90’s, in the shadow of HIV/AIDS. One of the longest running musicals in Broadway history, RENT played for 12 years, closing in 2008. It was nominated for ten Tony Awards and won four, including Best Musical and Best Score; it also won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. “We are very proud to present our interpretation of this iconic modern rock musical,” says director Michael Armendariz, “and to address timely issues such as drug addiction, the threat of of HIV/AIDS, and discrimination towards the LGBT community.” The cast of RENT includes Ashley Bouzianis, Amaris Chew, Daniel Deane, Lionel Downer, Sasha Green, Rebecca Hurlbert, Cherise King, Tyler Olson, Isabella Sylvester, Kevin Swanston, Curtis Walters, Colin Wolfe, and Michael Wright with music direction by Patrick Baron. Armendariz states, “The amount of new local talent appearing in this production is great and inspiring. It is truly an ensemble piece. Not only the actors, but most of the technical team are certified RENTheads!” Performances are held at CCT’s theatre at #18 Estate Orange Grove, just minutes from downtown Christiansted. Show times for RENT are Friday and Saturday evenings at 8 PM, with a matinee Sunday, February 16 at 4 PM. CCT will also present Sunny Side Up!—a collection of songs, skits and dances by CCT entertainers and guest performers. This onenight-only revue, with delicious complimentary desserts, will be held on Saturday, March 8 at 8 PM. Tickets for musical productions are always popular, so call 340-778-1983 or email HYPERLINK “mailto:eileencct@gmail.com” eileencct@ gmail.com to purchase tickets in advance. MOVING HERE Dream – Build – Retire More vacationers every year find a way to move to “America’s Paradise.” They like that we are part of the US, have no state taxes, enjoy great year-round climate and are surrounded by beautiful beaches and turquoise water. Newcomers learn the traditions of culture and history on the island. Being home to dozens of community organizations, with volunteer opportunities, and annual events to attend, it’s easy to get involved quickly and form new friendships. St. Croix is an ideal second home for some and a wonderful year-round residence for others. Houses and condos are available for rent or purchase along with undeveloped land for those who want to build. Job openings exist in many fields and we have an Economic Development Commission (EDC) program that offers tax incentives for business owners who qualify. St. Croix retains a relaxing pace even though cosmopolitan in many ways. We say, “ Good Morning” before beginning a conversation, say “no problem” and mean it, and celebrate lots of holidays without commercializing them. A few challenges might be not being able to find your favorite brand all the time, finding water scarce during dry spells (although you can buy it by the truckload), and erratic electricity (making generators popular along with the use of solar panels). Come and stay for a short or long time. Most of us wouldn’t live anywhere else!
