eptember is National Honey Month and here on St. Croix we celebrate Nature’s Original Sweetner with this wonderful, annual event! The Buzzaar showcases honey products and promotes awareness of the beekeeping sector of the agricultural industry in the VI, its importance to our food supply, and its connection to the general well-being of our community. The yearly Beekeepers’ Buzzaar also provides an outlet for producers, processors, and consumers to interact. This year beekeepers will have a wide variety of products for sale, including honey, honey based salad dressings, mead or honey wine, honey vinegar, lotions, lip balms, candies, candles, bees wax, bee pollen, and soaps. In addition, the event will feature educational presentations on safety, a question and answer station for children and prizes. “The Department of Agriculture and its partners are proud to host events such as the annual Beekeepers Buzzaar” said Commissioner of Agriculture Louis E. Petersen, Jr. Ph.D. “These activities promote the marketing of local agricultural products – both raw and value-added while increasing awareness of the agricultural industry. Local Beekeepers Celebrate with 4th Annual Buzzaar! The Honey Story The honeybee is the most amazing creature in the insect world. The bee’s body is delicate, her life is short and enemies are many. Yet these daunting drawbacks are shrugged off as the bee goes daily about her task of collecting nectar and pollen to take back to the hive so that future generations of bees can thrive. And the bee is willing to die to defend the hive. Even though, throughout history, man and animals have plundered beehives for a taste of honey, the honeybee has survived and adapted to climates and conditions far removed from that where bees were first recorded. If we journey back 4000 years to ancient Egypt, hieroglyphics show the story of the bee’s life. So primitive man had discovered the delight of honey by then—for centuries it was the only sweetener available. In the 4th century B.C., Aristotle wrote of the bee. Three hundred years later, Virgil the poet and Pliny the naturalist, carried the

story further. In England under Saxon rule, honey was accepted by some landlords as part-payment for rent from tenants. The bee had truly earned a valuable place in society. In 1792 a blind naturalist, Huber, published a book in Geneva on bees and honey. The honey industry that we know today began to grow. Sixty years later in Philadelphia, Lorenzo Lorraine Langstroth, a minister and teacher, invented a new kind of beehive. It was a rectangular wooden box in which he stood a row of frames. Each frame provided a place for bees to build the wax cells that form the honeycomb. The frames could be taken out separately so that one honeycomb could be removed without hurting the others. Bees are inspired engineers. Each wax cell in the comb has six sides and all cells have a slight backward tilt so that the honey will not spill out. Wax cells average 140 to the one centimeter in thickness and each cell fits snugly against its neighbor on all sides— a very strong and clever construction plan!

How Honey Is Made Honey gets its start as flower nectar, collected by bees and naturally broken down into simple sugars and stored in honeycombs. The unique design of the honeycomb, coupled with constant fanning by the bees’ wings, causes evaporation to take place, creating the thick, sweet liquid we know as honey. The color and flavor varies from hive to hive based on the type of flower nectar collected. Beekeepers harvest honey by collecting the honeycomb frames and scraping off the wax cap that bees make to seal off honey in each cell. Once the caps are removed, the frames are placed in an extractor—a centrifuge that spins the frames, forcing honey out of the comb. The honey is spun to the sides of the extractor, where gravity pulls it to the bottom and it can be collected. It is then strained to remove any remaining pieces of wax or other particles before bottling, labeling, and distributing the honey to retail outlets. Whether purchased in glass or plastic, or from a store or farmer’s market, if the label says pure honey—it is just that! August / September 2014 • Page 3

When Shopping on St. Croix, US citizens can enjoy a Duty-Free Allowance of $1600.00 per person, including children, every 30 days whether buying to pack or mail. This could add up to a $6400.00 joint declaration for a family of four residing in one household and traveling together! St. George Village Botanical Garden Museum Store specializes in botanically themed gifts, books and local art. Offering tasteful home decor and dazzling jewelry designs matched only by the Garden itself! There’s great stuff for kids as well, with a focus on toys and books that are both fun and educational. Remember your trip to the Botanical Garden and St. Croix with a memento from The Museum Store.

The history of our island is mirrored in its old church structures, many of which have recently been restored. The Moravian brethren, arriving here in the 1730s from Saxony in today’s Germany, founded their mission to bring Christianity to the enslaved part of the population. Their handsome yellow buildings at the entrance to Christiansted and red-roofed white wooden church mid-island, along with a contemporary church in Frederiksted, attest to their continued importance. The historic Anglican (Episcopalian) churches built in Gothic style include St. John’s in Christiansted, and in Frederiksted the beautifully restored St. Paul’s church, which had been damaged by a fire in 1996. These and other Anglican churches bear witmess to the large English population which settled here (and also brought us our custom of left lane driving. The large number of Irish settlers, along with Englishmen and Hispanics, have contributed to the presece of the Catholic church; Holy Cross in Christiansted is the oldest in the Virgin Islands; also significant and historic are St. Ann’s (with an interesting shrine) mid-island, St. Joseph’s on Centerline, and St. Patrick’s in Frederiksted. The Danish rule of the island from 1733 to 1917 brought the Lutheran church, which still plays a large role here. Lord God of Sabaoth in Christiansted occupies the former Dutch Reformed Church; Holy Trinity in Frederiksted was built shortly after the town was founded. The Dutch Reformed church (Presbyterian) now has an new mid-island home. But these are just a few of the many (at last count over 150) churches on St. Croix, from Seventh-Day Adventist to Methodist, Baptist, Church of God, any many more. You will find that church attendance and activities are important to a large part of our population, and visitors are always welcome at services,often a high point in their experience of our island. Many other faiths offer places of worship: a Jewish synagoge, a Hindu temple, and a Moslem mosque, to name a few. An easy-to-follow guide is actually the yellow pages of our local phone book beginning on Page 63.

Meet Cover Artist Phyllis Charles Her work has been exhibited in Florida and in St. Croix, and is in private collections in the States, Europe and on island. Her paintings have been on the Art and Soul Calendar of the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts, and were featured on posters for the St. Croix Orchid Society and Art in the Garden.

Although born in California, Phyllis Charles has lived in a variety of places including Peru and Holland, but grew up in Puerto Rico and considers Fajardo her ‘home town.’ During her peripatetic life, Phyllis evinced an interest in art and studied art at Wayne E. Petersen. Colegio Universitario del Sagrado Corazon in San Juan, PR., Notre Dame of Maryland, San Marcos in Lima Peru, and Colgate University in Hamilton New York from which she finally graduated with a degree in political philosophy and English in 1973. Since the 1970’s and 80’s, Phyllis was involved in many of the fabric arts including batik, soft sculpture, quilting and serigraphy and was a founder of Village Artists and Craftsmen of Central New York, and co-produced a number of juried art and craft shows in the region. Phyllis founded and owned Purple Thumb Plants, Inc. a company producing soft sculptured and silk-screened plants and animals and designed and marketed the products “until St. Croix beckoned in the late 80’s,” she says. After moving to St. Croix in 1990 with her husband Jim, Phyllis became involved at St. George Village Botanical Garden, and served as Nursery Manager, President and Executive Director during the 1990’s. During her tenure she developed and initiated Mango Melee, Art in the Garden, and the Christmas Gala. Her involvement at the Garden strengthened her interest and love of tropical botanicals.

“After all my wanderings, I now know that I am an’ island person,’ and I am happy to call St. Croix my full-time home. I continue to be captivated by bold and sensuous shapes and colors, and by the brilliant sunlight and dramatic shadows on the plants, landscapes and buildings of the island, and these are the focus of my work.” Phyllis works exclusively in acrylics, liking the spontaneity as well as the brilliance of color that matches her subject matter. She works plein aire occasionally, but because of the quick drying nature of acrylic paints, she prefers to photograph her subject matter and paint in the studio.

Phyllis moved to Florida in 2002, after her husband died, where she set up a quilt store, The Tropical Quilter and ran it as a brick and mortar and online shop. She also studied painting with Kelly Arnold in Stuart and at the Armory Art Center in West Palm Beach, and developed an intense desire to paint full time but soon realized that her heart was back on St. Croix. “It was only after my retirement in 2009 that I was able to devote myself full time to painting. I happily moved back to St. Croix in 2011 and immediately set up my studio and immersed myself in the abundance of tropical subjects.” In 2013 Phyllis co-founded the Artists Guild of St. Croix, and is its current president.

It seems the moment you mention the word wedding, the prices for items and services seem to double. It’s fun to plan all the details for your wedding but it’s the paying for the details (no matter the budget) that is less glamorous. When thinking of ways to make your wedding cost effective yet chic, fun, and memorable, you need to get creative. Even if you are not the DIY type, creatively navigating your way to wedding day savings is for you as well. Smaller destination weddings naturally require less time for wedding day photography coverage. That being said, I have met with clients who believe they only needed a few hours of photography only to discover they needed an additional hour or two on the day of the wedding. Was it more time they needed or more coverage? While meeting with a client of mine recently to discuss timelines and coverage vs. budget and packages, they thought more time was necessary. Looking at all the details I realized it wasn’t an issue of time, but of coverage. The solution was adding additional shooters. By adding a 2nd shooter or multiple shooters, the additional cameras are able to cover events and locations I can’t be at without a clone. Multiple shooters also offer a variety of perspectives and angles so every detail is captured. The second shooter option is usually a more affordable upgrade than adding additional time or purchasing a larger package and watching your solo photographer run around like a crazy person! As you go through your wedding planning and budgeting process think about your coverage needs. Ask yourself if adding more time to your photography package would really benefit your experience or if having more coverage in less time would more successfully address your budget and timeline.

The Indo-Pacific Lionfish, popular with aquarium hobbyists, is a dramatically-striped fish, named for the mane-like spread of feathery fins that fan out from its body. Although lionfish were occasionally seen in South Florida, possibly released by their owners when they got too big, in the past 10 years their population has exploded in the Caribbean. The Lionfish is often found stationary, resting against rocks or under coral ledges allowing you to get a close look. Unfortunately, they are invasive and harmful to the environment and have been documented eating an average of 85% of the juvenile fish on reef in a 5-week period. They are also prolific breeders—Lionfish have been observed breeding every month of the year; a single adult female can release over 30,000 eggs as often as every 4 days! “Dive operators, and our customers, are killing them, making a big dent in the population in places where we dive a lot,” says Michelle Pugh of Dive Experience. “We bring the fish back to the dock and fillet them—they’re actually delicious! The spines are cut off right away and we fillet them for ourselves or customers who may want to take them to their condos to cook or to a local restaurant and ask if they will do the cooking. this is a long, sandy beach with shade and great snorkeling off the reefs near shore; relatively shallow and nice for swimming. Dive shop, kayaking, hotels, beach bars, and restaurants nearby.

Columbus Landing - The site of the 1493

landing of Columbus at Salt River. Accessed by the road to the left of Salt River Marina. Minimal facilities. Managed by the Territorial State Historic Preservation Office (DPNR), and is within the boundaries of the National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve. Great view of Salt River from the Visitor’s Center. Call for hours, 340-773-1460.

Cramer Park - Just before Pt. Udall, on

St. Croix’s East End, is a beautiful long, deep public beach with bathrooms, changing rooms, and picnic tables.

Dorsch Beach - South of Frederiksted is this deep, white-sand beach with hotels, beach bars, and restaurants nearby; great swimming and snorkeling.

We love tennis on St. Croix! Some courts are equipped for night play.

Rainbow Beach - North of Frederiksted is this lively beach with bar and restaurant plus watersports and volleyball. Live music on Sunday afternoons. Great for swimming!

Reef Beach – A nice slip-of-a-beach across the

street from the Reef Condos on the East End. With a very gradual decline, the beach is perfect for getting on and off your windsurfer or for swimming with small children. Restaurants and golf nearby.

Sandy Point - Located on St. Croix’s West End,

this spectacular beach is part of Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge and is one the longest in the Caribbean! Park your car in the lot and take a short hike to the beach area for swimming, more hiking, and wildlife/nature photo ops. The beach is also a popular nesting site for the leatherback, hawksbill, green, and loggerhead sea turtles between April 1 and September 1 and is closed 7-days a week. Beach access is however open the rest of the year on weekends only, Saturday and Sunday, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. For info call the US Fish & Wildlife Service at 340-773-4554.

Shoy Beach - A popular local’s beach located

inside the entrance to The Buccaneer. Just tell the attendant at the guard gate to your right, that you are heading down to the beach. Parking lot at the end of the road. No facilities; some shade trees. Deep, lush sand. Great swimming.

St. Croix East End Marine Park - The USVI’s

first marine park encompasses approximately 60 square miles of coastal and marine habitats on St. Croix’s East End providing a great opportunity to experience the natural wonders of the island. Managed buy the Virgin Islands Department of Planning and Natural Resources (DPNR), a division of Coastal Zone Management. Beaches, watersports, hotels, restaurants, and the St. Croix Yacht Club within the parameters.

ARRIVAL. US citizens don’t need a passport; departing visitors need a photo ID. LOCATION. St. Croix lies 18 north latitude and 65 west longitude, about 700 miles from the equator. The Virgin Islands are part of the Antilles chain from the Bahamas down to Trinidad. St. Croix is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea. VIRGIN ISLANDERS. Virgin Islanders are a reserved but friendly people. “Good Morning,” “Good Afternoon,” and “Good Night” are welcome Crucian greetings. Everyone speaks English or a lilting version of it. CLIMATE. Year-round temperatures range in the 80s during the day, 70s most nights, with summer somewhat warmer. Easterly trade winds keep the humidity down. Most island showers are over in minutes. Residents collect rainwater from rooftops into household cisterns. Saltwater distillation plants help the supply. With water scarce, it is used sparingly. TIME. We are on Atlantic Standard in the winter, one hour ahead of Eastern Standard. During the summer, we are the same time as Eastern Daylight Savings. WHAT TO WEAR. Island dress is casual but bathing suits and men without shirts in town or grocery stores is frowned upon. Men don’t need ties or jackets; hats are great sun protectors for everyone. No adaptors needed for personal plug-ins. WE ARE HERE TO HELP YOU. The Christiansted Visitors Bureau is located in Government House on Queen Cross Street; open weekdays. The Frederiksted Visitor’s Bureau

is located in a Strand Street courtyard near the Pier; open weekdays & cruise-ship days. TAXES. No sales tax but a 10% government tax is applied to hotel rooms. COMMUNICATIONS. St. Croix has several radio stations and three television stations; Cable TV carries the national news stations. Two newspapers are published daily; also an online daily. New York and Miami papers arrive each morning. TELEPHONE SERVICE. The local area code is 340 but you need not dial it for local numbers. Phone cards are sold at many shops throughout the island. We have local Sprint and ATT stores plus Radio Shack for any forgotten cell phone accessories. POSTAL RATES. As part of the US postal system, 1st class mail is .49 cents for the first ounce, postcards are .33 cents, international rates are $1.10 for cards and letters. See maps for post office locations. MARINE LIFE. All native plants, animals, fish (unless harvested for food), coral and shells are protected under the Indigenous Species Act. You will not be permitted to leave the territory with any plants or marine life in your possession. HOLIDAYS. We celebrate US Federal holidays and local ones as well. ALWAYS REMEMBER TO DRIVE LEFT! Whether renting a car or crossing the street, it is vital to remember that traffic in the USVI flows from the left side of the road. St. Croix is 28 miles in length and 7 miles at the widest point with two major towns—Christiansted at the center on the north shore and Frederiksted at the west end. The Caribbean Sea which surrounds the island is always there to guide you along the roads that wind around the coast.

Parking in Christiansted is limited and 2-hour parking on parts of Company and Queen Cross Streets is enforced. Look for the signs. There is daytime parking in the National Park Service lot near Fort Christiansvaern and a large public lot with fees just west of town on Strand and King Cross Streets. Major roads are asphalt and usually well maintained. The Melvin H. Evans Highway is the only 4-lane, divided highway running from mid-island west to within 1 mile of Frederiksted. The speed limit is 55. In other areas, the 35 mph limit applies; in town, 20 mph unless otherwise posted.

Car rental agencies have a variety of vehicles available from sporty jeeps to roomy air-conditioned sedans, vans, and SUVs. The average price usually includes unlimited mileage but you fill the tank upon return! Both US and other driver’s licenses are recognized. The driver and front seat passenger are required by law to use seat belts and cell phone talking or texting is not allowed.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: VITRAN Buses serve the island with numerous routes, starting service at 5:30 am on weekdays, ending at 9:00 pm, starting later on weekends. Armageddon — This is a deep dive that is the wreckage of the original Frederiksted pier that was dismantled in 1990 to build the present day pier. Tons of fish can be seen here along with an occasional Seahorse. 18. Rainbow Reef — A shallow reef filled with all the Tropicals in the book! Great place for Eels, Arrow Crabs and Cleaner Shrimp. CHRISTIANSTED WALKING TOUR

Let’s start a leisurely walking tour of CHRISTIANSTED at the site of the Old Scale House 1 on the harborfront, known as the Wharf. One section of the 1856 structure displays the scale used in former days to weigh barrel of rum and sugar. The other section holds a bookstore and gift shop as well as an information center about all things St. Croix. This is one of a complex of five buildings comprising the Christiansted National Historic Site, established in 1952, administered by the National Park Service.

Fort Christiansvaern 3 was the first public building to be started by the Danes after the island was purchased from France in 1733. It is built of Danish yellow brick and was completed in 1749 and later expanded. Its present appearance reflects the 1830’s period. Furnishings from that era are on display; also an exhibit on local military history. At the entrance admission tickets to the Fort and Steeple Building are sold ($3) and brochures available. Open Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm, weekends 9 am to 5 pm. 2 hour parking available on site. The Steeple Building 4 across Hospital Street, formerly the Lutheran Church and dates from 1753. It houses a display documenting aspects of the religious history of St. Croix. Ask for opening hours at the Fort. Across Company Street lies the onetime Danish West India & Guinea Company Warehouse 5 , built in 1749. In its courtyard, slave auctions were formerly held.

Government House 6 on King Street was in part the former home of a Danish merchant. That section dates from 1749; another section, the previous town house of a wealthy Danish plantation owner, was joined to it in 1826, together becoming the seat of the Danish West Indies government. The grand staircase and portico were added in 1830, as was the impressive ballroom/reception hall on the second floor by Governor General Peter von Scholten, who had his office and official residence here. The former are open to the public (entrance at mid-building on King Street). The Virgin Islands Tourism office (open weekdays only) is downstairs fronting the Lutheran Church. The Lutheran Church 7 across Queen Cross Street on King Street, was originally the Dutch Reformed Church, built in the 1740’s and transferred to the Lutherans in 1831, who brought the furnishings here from the Steeple Building. Later, the steeple was added. Walking up Queen Cross Street to Company Street takes you to Apothecary Hall 8 on the left corner, which holds both the tiny Apothecary Museum on Queen Cross Street, open anytime, and in the courtyard the Archaeological Museum, open only Saturdays 10 am-2 pm. Nearby on Company Street is the Old Market 9 , laid out in the original town plan from 1735, and still being used. The well dates from 1863. On this square you will also find the downtown Post Office.

Christiansted National Historic Site Established in 1952, Christiansted National Historic Site was the first unit of the National Park Saystem in the US Virgin Islands. The park’s historic buidings and grounds commemorate the Danish heritage (1733-1917) of the town of Christiansted, St. Croix, which was named in honor of the reigning King of Denmark and Norway, Christian VI. In the 1700s, Christiansted was part of a mercantile system that linked Europe,West Africa, and the Caribbean

in the infamous “Triangular Trade.” Christiansted was the first town in the Lesser Antilles to be built on the grid system and to have a building code. Its distinctive colonial architecture reflects the town’s status as capital of the Danish West Indies (17551871); the great wealth generated by the export of cane sugar, molasses, and rum; and the influence of government building inspectors. Take two tours—“Free Gut” is the freed black neighborhood of Christiansted established by the Danish in 1748 and “Gallows Bay” is the fishing community that sustained Christiansted’s fish market for more than two centuries. SUNSET JAZZ, AUGUST 15 & SEPTEMBER 19, FREDERIKSTED Getting West St. Croix’ West End offers beautiful sandy, calm beaches, great snorkeling and wreck or pier diving, spectacular sunsets, and the lush subtropical forest. You can reach Frederiksted with its quaint, historic town architecture in several ways. The four-lane Melvin Evans Highway is your speediest route, if you are coming from the east. Most drivers take Queen Mary Highway (Centerline Road), which also takes you to the St. George Village Botanical Garden, the Cruzan Rum Factory, and Whim Plantation Museum, all just off the Queen Mary Highway.

Governor General Peter von Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the enslaved population in the Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848, from adjacent Buddhoe Park. The park contains a bronze bust of the renowned slave rebellion leader. The Oscar E. Henry Customs House was built in the 1800’s. The building is undergoing renovations. The Visitors’ Bureau, normally located here, has been temporarily moved to an upstairs location in the courtyard of a nearby building on Strand Street. The Freedom Fountain facing the pier was installed for the Emancipation 150th anniversary celebration. In a historic light blue building down a block is the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts. After severe damage during a labor insurrection in 1878, the town was rebuilt in Victorian style. Victoria House on Strand Street and Apothecary Hall on King Cross Street between King and Queen Streets preserve the Frederiksted architecture of that time. Frederiksted is home to a number of historic churches, including St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Holy Trinity Lutheran Chruch, Friedensberg Moravian Church, and St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. The newly restored Old Danish School on Hospital Street and Market Street is a handsome building. At Strand and Queen Cross Streets is the Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library, built in 1803. The Market Place is still in use today, as it was in 1751 at the founding of Frederiksted. There are ATMs at the Scotiabank and First Bank locations on Strand Street. After hours, swipe your card at the door to get inside. The Frederiksted waterfront is home to Sunset Jazz concerts, held the third Friday of the month from 5:30 to 8 p.m.. Admission is free to the public. A public beach with showers and bathrooms is next to Fort Frederik.

Touring Frederiksted Your tour of Frederiksted begins at Fort Frederik by the cruise ship pier and newly revitalized waterfront. Construction on the Fort began in 1752 and was completed in 1760. Featuring a museum with several permanent exhibits and an art gallery, it is open weekdays from 8:30 am to 4 p.m. There is a small admission charge.

Take Creque Dam Road (Route 58) through scenic valleys and under towering trees. This road is passable by car, but narrow and a bit rough. The rainforest can be explored by car, 4 WD (unpaved West Scenic Road can be impassable after heavy rains) or on horseback. Among area attractions are the Lawaetz Family Museum and lovely gardens at Estate Little La Grange, the impressive Estate Mt. Washington ruins, the nearby giant baobab trees at Butler Bay, and the infamous beer-drinking pigs!

You can also travel west through the rainforest on Route 76, Mahogany Road (which farther east is Route 72, Midland Road). If you are a bit adventurous, turn off on 765 or 763 (see signs for Creque Dam Farm and Mt. Victory Camp, both worth a visit)

You can pick up Route 63 along the water north of the Fort, or if you want to bypass the town when coming from the Queen Mary Highway, take the La Grange Road, Route 63, by turning rights just after Whim Museum.

From Queen Mary Highway, turn right at the traffic light at Hannah’s Rest. From the end of Melvin Evans Highway, turn right and continue north through the traffic light. Turn left at the Post Office (this is Fisher Street). Frederiksted town is rebounding, thanks to a recent $14 million revitalization project. To get to Strand Street, Fort Frederik and the beautifully landscaped waterfront and the Pier, turn right just before the fishermen’s boat ramp and market shed at the end of Fisher Street. This is a great starting point for a walking tour of the town with its many historic buildings.

ARTS in the U. S. Virgin Islands Part 14 in a series This is the final installment and update on the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts today, by the current Executive Director, Betty L. Mahoney, after many months of excerpts from “Arts in the U. S. Virgin Islands” by Ruth S. Moore and David M. Hough of the Caribbean Research Institute of the then College of the Virgin Islands, written in 1967 for VICA.

PRESENT AND FUTURE When the name Virgin Islands Council on the Arts (VICA) is mentioned most people think very fondly of a kind and gentle Virgin Islander, John Jowers who, three years after the Council was created, returned to the Territory to head the agency and for thirty three years spent his life living and teaching the appreciation and preservation of the arts and culture. From its inception in 1966, VICA has been the primary source of funding and support for the arts and culture in the Virgin Islands. The Council continues its quest for the preservation and proliferation of the arts and have increased its grantee base to include a wide variety of artistic endeavors such as CD and video production, arts and cultural education, creative wood design, folk life and music festivals, concerts, support and collaborations with art based and community groups, schools and government agencies. Over the years VICA functioned as an artistic ambassador of the Virgin Islands coordinating and executing cultural and presentations and exchanges throughout the Caribbean, Venice, Italy, Ghana, West Africa, and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., to name a few.

St. Croix Waterfront Living—Check! by Amy Land-de Wilde When you think of living in a tropical paradise, what is the first picture that pops into your head? Golfing on a verdant course? Check! Scuba diving or snorkeling with brightly-colored corals and fish? Check! Sailing, fishing, or kayaking in a bioluminescent bay? Check, check, check! Tennis with friends or hiking among historic ruins? Once more, check and check! If you’re like so many, you are probably mostly visualizing a morning walk or stroll at dusk on a sandy beach along a beautiful coastline with the sparkling Caribbean lapping at your toes; or maybe snoozing while you read under the shade of a palm tree listening to the gentle waves in the background. You will get so much value for your dollar when you compare our costs to purchase waterfront property here compared to other locations in the U.S., especially resort locations! You can buy a home here for the cost of an unimproved lot in some places in the States and generally for a lot less—and on crystal-clear blue water where you can see your feet! This is the lure of St. Croix and the call of many to our beautiful island. It has never been more affordable to own your own slice of paradise on the water. Prices for homes, condos and vacant land (even waterfront guesthouses!) have come down since their pre-2008 highs. You can now settle into your own beachfront condo for less than $100,000 in some cases, although more luxury will cost over $400,000. There are currently 80 waterfront condos on the market ranging from $50,000 to $1.4 million, with the greatest number between $100,000$200,000. Although our condo fees might be higher than you’re accustomed to, they mostly include windstorm and flood insurance, which costs more here. Waterfront homes are a much more rarified breed….at this writing there are only 28 on the market. I often hear people say they’d rather have a home than a condo because of condo fees, but unless you’re going to self-insure and do all the work yourself, those costs are a wash and generally your dollars will buy more amenities in a condo. But condos aren’t for everyone—for instance, not all condo developments will allow your beloved pets. Waterfront homes range from $400,000-$13 million depending on size, need for renovation, amenities and whether you’re on a dramatic rocky cliff or can step out onto the sand. It is definitely the dream of many to own on the water. There are currently 26 waterfront lots available with prices ranging from $90,000-$475,000 and located throughout St. Croix. We are lucky to have an excellent choice of architects and builders to design a custom-built home for you. Building costs run from about $250 per square foot and up once again depending on the level of finishings you desire, the slope of the property and other amenities. Developers also have a choice of waterfront locations to consider for their concepts of a condo development, hotel or mixed-use community. Owning a property on soft sand and being able to walk into the sea from your back yard is definitely very rare. And although most of the beaches are very quiet, all Virgin Islands’ beaches are public, but access is restricted to specified areas, so this doesn’t become intrusive. On any clear night you can see shooting stars. But, from time-to-time the Earth passes through clouds of dust left behind by comets. Then we experience a meteor shower. Want to try to see a meteor shower? Try one of these nights, between midnight and dawn: July 28-29 the Delta Aquarids Meteor Shower should produce up to 20 meteors per hour at its peak; August 12-13 the Perseids Meteor Shower, which is one of the best of the year, may show up to 60 meteors per hour at its peak, however, the waning gibbous moon will block out some of the meteors this year; October 8-9 a minor meteor shower, the Draconids takes place but the Full Moon will overpower most of the shooting stars; and, on October 22-23 another minor shower the Orionids should produce some 20 meteors per hour at its peak. It is produced by dust grains left behind by Halley’s Comet Early in the morning of October 8th there will be a total eclipse of the Moon, as

the Moon passes through the Earth’s shadow. In the Virgin Islands the Moon will set before totality begins. The Moon will enter the lighter part of the Earth’s shadow Moon at about 4:14 a.m., then enters the darker part of the shadow about an hour later, before setting at 6:12 a.m. as the Sun rises. On August 18th there will be a conjunction of Venus and Jupiter. Look in the eastern sky just before dawn. The two planets will appear only about a 1/5 of a degree apart at their closest (the Moon is about 1/2 degree). In the evening, low in the western sky once the sky grows dark after sunset, you can find Saturn and Mars. They are seen against the background of stars of the constellation of Libra, the Scales, a constellation which has no bright stars. Libra is the only non-animal in the Zodiac. The zodiac is a band of constellations which encircles the sky and it is to the zodiac that we must look to see the planets. If you look to the east of Saturn and Mars, you will find the bright red star Antares, often called the rival of Mars due to the stars red color. Since Mars is also visible right now, you can compare the two and see who wins. Antares is the heart of Scorpius, the Scorpion, another zodiacal

constellation. The Scorpion’s long curved tail, made of fainter stars, looks something like you might expect. According to legend, Orion was such a mighty hunter that he boasted that he could defeat any animal on Earth in battle. Suddenly a scorpion appeared, stung Orion on the foot and Orion died. However, Orion was such a great hunter that he was given immortality and placed in the heavens. The scorpion was also placed in the night sky, but you never seen Orion and the scorpion at the same time. Vacationing is a time to relax, but here is a quick quiz: How far away is the closest star from the Earth and what is the star’s name? If you know the name you probably have a good idea of the distance. Our star the Sun is closest and it is now about 91 million miles away. Okay, it was a trick question, most people do not think of the Sun as a star. But, you thought the Sun was 93 million miles away. The Earth is closest to the Sun in July and farthest away in January. On July 3rd, at about 8:00 p.m. AST (00 GMT) the Earth will be farthest from the Sun for the entire year, about 94.5 million miles (152 million kilometers). That is about 3.1 million miles (4.9 million km) farther than the Earth's closest distance to the Sun.
