Good Day and welcome to the United States Virgin Islands! Our people welcome you. We are a unique place to visit with a variety of islands: St. Croix, St. Thomas, St. John, Water Island and dozens of small cays and islets. Each island is unique. Each offers distinct and memorable experiences.

St. Croix is our largest island and we invite you to discover our historic towns; Christiansted and Frederiksted and discover the quaint shops and Danish Architecture. St Croix has wide open spaces, magnificent vistas and a unique culture. St. John is almost all National Park and perfectly preserved. It has sparkling turquoise bays and long, lazy beaches. Enjoy the relaxing atmosphere. St Thomas is the shopping center of the Caribbean with duty free shopping and a vibrant nightlife. Charlotte Amalie is the capital city of the United States Virgin Islands with its huge natural harbor, bustling port and vistas that will take your breath away. Try our underwater delights, bask on a beach, soak up some sunshine, sail into sunset or hike the trails. You can see why we call this "America’s Paradise."
Timothy
As the Governor of the United States Virgin Islands, I assure you that we will do everything possible to make your stay enjoyable. Our people are warm and friendly. I extend to you my warmest greetings and hope you enjoy your vacation in the United States Virgin Islands, this year celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Transfer Day!

The 66th
CRUCIAN CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL
Schedule of Events DECEMBER 9, 3PM Prince & Princess Pageant Location TBA
Crucian Christmas Festival Committee
The Crucian Christmas Festival on St. Croix., now celebrating 66 years, is our largest annual event and anticipated for months ahead. It became an annual event I 1952 with the revival of old holiday traditions transformed into a modern event. Tradition plays a large role in the Virgin Islands and, back in former days of slavery, Christmas and Easter were the only times the enslaved population were given time off. That called for celebration, which consisted of dressing up in costumes, masquerading, and making calls at other plantations, and parading through the streets of the towns, where dancing and merrymaking marked these gatherings. But Susan Wall with religious life playing a large role, churchgoing to celebrate the birth of Christ was and remains a major seasonal activity. The Crucian Christmas Festival has grown over the years and its now a month-long extravaganza. Highlighting St. Croix’s traditions, history, crafts, food, and drinks, it begins in December and ends with the Three Kings Parade in January. But preparations for the celebrations and elaborate parade costumes begin long before. The full Schedule of Events at right reveals the ambitious line-up starting with the pageants, Prince, Princess, and Queen! Then on to singing contests, early morning tramps, band competitions, and a colorful festival village and amusement park, and fireworks, drawing visitors for two weeks. But nothing equals the excitement of the parades at the end of the festivities—first the de-
lightful children’s parade, where steel pan orchestras from schools and churches and groups of majorette twirlers vie for being the favorite of the crowds along the King Street route in Frederiksted. The following Susan Wall day, the Three Kings Day adult parade is the grand finale, featuring over a hundred troupes, floats, and individual entries—an extravaganza to the beat of loud music, bodies swaying, fantastic costumes, pageantry and pulsating energy and merriment, starting before noon and continuing until after dark. The Village closes with Caribbean Night and fireSusan Wall works. 5 More Celebrations— Dec 7, “Meet Me Under the Mistletoe” Christmas Gala, Botanical Garden of the VI. Dec 8, Christmas Boat Parade & Fireworks. Dec 9, Christmas Spoken Here, Botanical Garden of the VI. Dec 12, Gallows Bay Holiday Festival. Dec 21-22, Olde-Time Crucian Christmas, Estate Whim Museum. Josephine’s Dessert & Wine – 340-473-6570 No sweet tooth required at Josephine’s, downtown Christiansted’s chilled-out destination for crushable treats of the sugar-dusted, caramel-slathered, and fruity-with-a-crisp-dry-finish kind. The house-made desserts reign supreme, but you can grab a chair, sip a glass of cellar-temp vino, and let the vintage soundtrack (and cranked A/C) wash over you while the sugar addicts in your crew do their thing. Namely: velvety cheesecake with prosecco-softened strawberries. Death-by-chocolatestyle pot de crème. Silky banana-chocolate panna cotta topped with ripe local fruit, then hit with the business end of a blowtorch. On the off-chance you get tempted, turns out smoky añejo tequila pairs magically with any chocolate-leaning dessert ($7 each; three for $19) getting spin-doctored around and around your table’s Lazy Susan. Just saying. Tuesday – Saturday, 5 pm – 11 pm. Luncheria — 340-773-4247 This restaurant is an institution on St. Croix - a taste of Mexico in Christiansted for 37 years! Located in Apothecary Hall, Luncheria shares a long property history with others in this historical spot. History tells us that there was an apothecary on the corner of Company and Queen Cross Street years ago; the St. Croix Landmarks Society has replicated it in their small, walk-up Apothecary Museum behind the restaurant with original bottles retrieved from storage at Whim Museum. Apothecary Courtyard, as it is today, goes back to the spring of 1978 when it was renovated from a private, in-town, walled estate into the public space we see today. The gates were opened, patio laid, brick walkways put in, the gallery shop space renovated, mahogany bars brought down from New York City, kitchens added upstairs and down, three dining spaces upstairs created, and tables set up on the front patio. First it was a 250-seat, over-ambitious project leased by a New York restauranteur for about six months, then reopened as a French restaurant for a couple years. And finally, for 37 years and counting, it has been our in-town casual dining spot for simple, well-loved Mexican dishes, establishing Lenny Richardson and Luncheria as a Christiansted institution! Lenny’s had lots of practice getting his Nachos, Quesadillas, Burritos, Enchiladas, Tacos, Salads, and Tostadas just right. In a casual atmosphere that invites a relaxing time with friends and family, simple, affordable meals around a picnic table on an open patio for lunch or dinner, make for great conversation and good times. Between Lenny and Louie, the bartender, a friendly welcome awaits. Head to the bar to place your order, pick out your table and wait for your # to be called, head back to the pick-up window and stop for condiments before heading back to indulge. The Famous ‘Two ‘fer Tuesday’ offers up 2 Tacos, 2 Burritos, and or 2 Beers for $5. Get 2 Tacos for $3. on Thursday nights, dine in only. Full bar serves up Margaritas in three flavors and sizes, Sangria, cocktails, beers, and wine by the glass. For the kids, Mini Beans-n-Rice, Tacos, Nachos, Burritos, and Quesadillas. Light Catering and Private Parties. Take Out.

SEE VIBRANT LOCAL ART!
Meet Photographer Stephanie Schoyer & Artist Dad, Toby Schoyer How long has your family lived on St. Croix? My Grandparents and my mother moved here in the 1940’s from Long Island, NY. My father Stephanie and Toby, 1989 moved here in the late 50’s after graduating from Trinity in CT. I, along with my two brothers were born and raised here. Tell us a little about your ‘famous’ father. Toby was such a unique individual! His mother was insanely creative, she used to have a radio show with Fred Rogers (of Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood). His love of art started early, I have pencil sketches he did as a small boy. Growing up with Toby was filled with unexpected adventures; we made strange home movies, I was always welcome in his art studio with my own easel & paints and one of my favorite memories was when he drove me to school in the morning and would point out the different ways the light changed the landscape. He loved to entertain and had a very large hat collection. At the end of dinner everyone had to pick a hat and become the character matching the hat (Fez, Top Hat, Pith Helmet, Cowboy - many others). My friends used to beg to spend the weekends at my house, not for me but because they loved hanging out with him. Sadly, he passed away suddenly in 1996 and I still miss him so very much! Did he always paint and why? Toby was a jack of many trades but first and foremost he was an artist. Gifted in both watercolor and acrylic he also created sculptures, movies, collages. We lived up the hill and as we were driving by he would often run outside and corral us into the house, put us into various costumes and the next thing we knew we were posing for his next painting. Any shows or exhibits?
Umbrella
Toby Schoyer, 1996
He had many, many exhibits over the years, created commission works for several people. I remember standing in line at Scotiabank in Christiansted once, his paintings were all over the walls. There was one I had never seen. It was of a West Indian woman holding a baby, she looked so familiar. As I made my way to the teller I remembered posing for that paining - it was me and my son! What was his artistic influence? He gave me everything. He taught me how to see as an artist. When I was little I would paint the hills green as children do. He pointed out that in the morning with the sun behind the hills they looked grey. He was always pointing out little things like that. I got so angry at him when I applied to the Art Student’s League in NYC and he refused to let me go because he said “they” would ruin me. We would “chase the light,” something I still do with my photography. Any other artistic family members? My older brother Sloan is an extremely talented photographer but chose the corporate world of oil refining as a career. My younger brother Tim used to paint with Dad too but he chose the oil business as well. My mother Lee was a gifted seamstress, she could make anything, clothes, costumes, toys and did so all the time. She shared the studio with Dad, her sewing on one side, his paints on the other. Have you always been a photographer? No. I wanted to paint like Toby and loved doing it and then one day I picked up a camera

and as soon as I heard the shutter release I felt something shift and knew I had found my niche. Over the years, I have worn many hats, hotel front desk clerk, legal secretary, speech writer for a very colorful local senator, got certified as an EMT and have had my real estate license since 1987. I am currently back working in real estate with David Fedeles at Coldwell Banker; he and I were a team for 10 years in the late 90’s. I love this island and introducing it to new buyers is a wonderful way to spend the day! What do you like best about St. Croix? I love the laid-back vibe of our community. It was a magical place to grow up and I couldn’t imagine having raised my own children anywhere else. I love running into people who knew my parents and grandparents and the “kids” I went to kindergarten with who are now grandparents themselves (like me!). Best of all you can be yourself here, no pretenses. We are a small diverse community that sticks together no matter what.
Stephanie Schoyer
Do you paint? I do but mostly for myself. I create floorcloths (canvas rugs) and do a lot of art journaling mixing mono prints and my photography. I’m currently working on creating a book of these journals that I’ve been making for about 15 years. What does taking pictures do for you?

Our Danish Connection VELKOMMEN!
“The Festival of Lights” Here and There
by Nina York
(340) 776-0656. Page 38 • December 2018 / Januar y 2019
At this time of year, the weather in Denmark is mostly gray and damp, and the short daytime hours between 10 am and 3:30 pm have a depressing effect on many residents in Scandinavia. The further north you go, the shorter the days. But a remedy for as long as Christmas has been celebrated in Denmark has been the comforting and illuminating presence of candles being lit, not just in celebration of the joys of the holiday, but as a ritual that persists throughout the year, even in the middle of summer when the bright daylight dominates for over 18 hours. The candle industry in Denmark enjoys extreme popularity. The Advent period prior to December 24, Christmas Eve, brings a candle marked in increments for each day to be lit daily for the allotted segment, and any excuse for lighting candles all over the house is fully endorsed by any respectable citizen. The light of candles spreads the feeling of hygge (say hee-ga), a Danish concept that entails coziness and comfort that has spread in popularity to the U.S. and many other countries. While candlelight in mankind’s distant past was the most common source of daily illumination, we realize that the risk of using this source has led to many tragedies. Not all that long ago, all lights on Christmas trees in Denmark were live candles in special holders; as a precaution, a pail of water was placed in the vicinity of the tree, just in case of its many paper decorations catching fire. Here in the tropics, the use of candles is perhaps more frequently associated with power failures, being pretty common, and every well-prepared household will have candles available for such occasions. Indeed, with last year’s prolonged absence of electric power due to two hurricanes wrecking our power provider, we found candles providing a modicum of hygge during long evenings without TV. Going outdoors, we actually were able to enjoy the spectacular natural source of lighting from a vast array of stars that were now visible. To be sure, not sufficient for reading lights but an example of the grandeur of nature that we often take for granted or ignore. On both sides of the Atlantic, Christmas is known as The Festival of Lights, and while holiday celebrations differ, in part because of the great climate difference between Denmark and the Virgin Islands, we share joyful music, church attendance, and delicious and plentiful food and drink, and of course the sharing of gifts. We Crucians consider ourselves lucky that we can celebrate the Holiday season outdoors in pleasant weather rather than having to bundle up and perhaps shovel snow as may be the case for many a Dane. Still, they consider it a magical time and relish it, especially under candlelight. Holiday Engagement
‘‘Tis the season for engagements! As the holidays approach, one half of many couples this season is busy planning an engagement surprise for their other half. The holidays are such a wonderful time to spread love and create a special memory with your partner. If you are planning to ask your partner to marry you this holiday season, here are a few tips to make your ‘ask’ extra special. PLAN AHEAD Timing is everything in life. This is one event you can actually plan for. When executing your proposal plan, take into account all of the variables and possible obstacles and plan for them. Make reservations, get others involved, check sunset times, have a contingency plan if delays occur, etc. LOCATION If possible, visit the location, at the time you plan to propose, on several occasions. If it’s a public space, check a community calendar to ensure there are no major events or festivals planned on the day you plan to propose. It would be wise to have a backup location. SET THE MOOD You know what your partner enjoys and, more importantly, what you both enjoy together. The mood of your proposal should be uniquely yours and characteristic of your personality as a couple. Stay true to your relationship. DOCUMENTATION Moments like these are intimate and special, but also worth capturing. With a well-thought-out plan, a photographer can work with you to stealthily capture your proposal discreetly. This moment doesn’t have to be stressful. The butterflies you feel will be more enjoyable if you take time to plan ahead. Happy Holidays! Watersports & Activities STEAL SOME TIME AND GET IN THE WATER!
Two Can Get You There—Teroro II & Dragon Fly Buck Island Charters, with Captain Heinz and his son Carl, is one of the oldest charter boat companies sailing to Buck Island Reef National Monument. Captain Heinz, born in Austria, a beautiful country of mountains and lakes but no ocean, decided to see more of the world and learned to sail while working in Bermuda racing sailboats during his free time. In 1964 Heinz saw his dreamboat sail into Bermuda – a trimaran design that sailed three times faster than the monohulls he had been racing. He met the owner/designer Arthur Piver and arranged to have one built in England, a 30-footer, and named her Teroro (Polynesian for Sun God). In 1966, he and his good friend Peter sailed her from England to Barbados in 21 days although, at that time, trimarans and catamarans were considered experimental boats and not widely accepted by the sailing world as safe ocean crossing vessels because of how much faster they went than monohulls.
After sailing from island to island he found the beautiful port of Christiansted in 1968 and raised his three children—Sarah, Melanie, and Carl – with his wife Mary. In 1985 Teroro was replaced by 42’ Teroro II, the first commercially built boat by Gold Coast Yachts at Salt River
Captain Heinz and his son Carl.
Navigation was accomplished via dead reckoning (no GPS or other technology like we have today). During their crossing, Heinz observed so much floating trash that it caused him to be concerned environmentally and has always relied on wind power to sail his boats since then. He was already thinking green in those days!
Carl followed his father’s passion after sailing and competing in his youth and after helping to captain Teroro II to Buck Island for 16 years and now has his own boat, Dragonfly, a 38’ trimaran. Carl loves nature, sailing, windsurfing, surfing, and kite boarding and is ready for any water sport when weather conditions permit. He and his father love to share their local knowledge with the guests aboard Teroro II and Dragonfly and give them a very personalized snorkeling tour of Buck Island Reef. The boats are located at Green Cay Marina.

DIVE EXPERIENCE — Diving St. Croix for 35 years Michelle Pugh, a 39-year resident of St Croix, learned to dive in Los Angeles while high school and hasn’t stopped since! In 1992, along with Jacques Cousteau, she was inducted into the platinum Pro 5000 through SSI. In 2004, she was inducted into the Women Divers Hall of Frame for being the first woman to dive with killer whales in the wilds of Canada, the first American woman to teach diving in Moscow, Russia and for establishing the mooring system on St Croix to protect the coral reefs. The Buccaneer Hotel – 340-712-2144 Roseway Welcome!
WOS
The familiar tanbark sails of the Schooner Roseway are back in St. Croix. For the 13th consecutive season, Roseway has returned to Christiansted, where the tall ship will harbor in Gallows Bay through March. World Ocean School has served thousands of US Virgin Island students, ranging from 5th grade to high school, aboard Roseway over the past 12 years. In this 2018-19 school year, World Ocean School aims to work as many St. Croix students as possible. Elementary School Students will sail aboard Roseway and dive into World Ocean School’s community values--teamwork, communication, trust, self-worth, and take part in introductory STEM and seamanship lessons. Junior High Students will participate in multi-week programming, where students are challenged to apply their academics in a relevant setting and take ownership over their learning. High School Students will gain professional marine experience working alongside Roseway crew in dedicated sail training and preservation of Roseway, and having the opportunity to crew the boat during pubic Sunset Sails. For many students, sailing aboard Roseway is their first time seeing their St. Croix from the ocean, or from afar. Students often remark upon seeing St. Croix from this new perspective, “I didn’t know my island was so beautiful.” World Ocean School will, once again, offer regular Sunset Sails out of Gallows Bay, just East of Christiansted. These sails serve two purposes: they are an opportunity for World Ocean School to open Roseway to the public, sharing her unique role as an active National Historic Landmark, and they serve as a source of revenue for the World Ocean School’s ongoing educational programs. We also offer private charters, events, weddings, and more. All proceeds support the programs of the World Ocean School, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Tickets are available for several special events this season, including the St. Croix Triathlon, St. Croix Christmas Boat Parade, special New Year’s and Valentine’s Day sails, and more. ARRIVAL. US citizens don’t need a passport; departing visitors need a photo ID. LOCATION. St. Croix lies 18 north latitude and 65 west longitude, about 700 miles from the equator. The Virgin Islands are part of the Antilles chain from the Bahamas down to Trinidad. St. Croix is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea. VIRGIN ISLANDERS. Virgin Islanders are a reserved but friendly people. “Good Morning,” “Good Afternoon,” and “Good Night” are welcome Crucian greetings. Everyone speaks English or a lilting version of it. CLIMATE. Year-round temperatures range in the 80s during the day, 70s most nights, with summer somewhat warmer. Easterly trade winds keep the humidity down. Most island showers are over in minutes. Residents collect rainwater from rooftops into household cisterns. Saltwater distillation plants help the supply. With water scarce, it is used sparingly. TIME. We are on Atlantic Standard in the winter, one hour ahead of Eastern Standard. During the summer, we are the same time as Eastern Daylight Savings. WHAT TO WEAR. Island dress is casual but bathing suits and men without shirts in town or grocery stores is frowned upon. Men don’t need ties or jackets; hats are great sun protectors for everyone. No adaptors needed for personal plug-ins. WE ARE HERE TO HELP YOU. The Visitors’ Bureau is located upstairs in the Frederiksted Mall and next to the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts on Strand Street; open weekdays Page 48 • December 2018 / Januar y 2019
COMMUNICATIONS. St. Croix has several radio stations and three television stations; Cable TV carries the national news stations. Two newspapers are published daily; also an online daily. New York and Miami papers arrive each morning. TELEPHONE SERVICE. The local area code is 340 but you need not dial it for local numbers. Phone cards are sold at many shops throughout the island. We have local Sprint and ATT stores for any forgotten cell phone accessories. POSTAL RATES. As part of the US postal system, 1st class mail is .50 cents for the first ounce, postcards are .35 cents, international rates are $1.20 for cards and letters. See maps for post office locations. MARINE LIFE. All native plants, animals, fish (unless harvested for food), coral and shells are protected under the Indigenous Species Act. You will not be permitted to leave the territory with any plants or marine life in your possession. HOLIDAYS. We celebrate US Federal holidays and local ones as well. The government closes for all holidays, banks close for most. Shops stay open except on major holidays. HELPFUL NUMBERS. Police, Fire, Ambulance ................ Christiansted Harbor.
DRIVE SAFE— STAY LEFT Whether renting a car or crossing the street, it is vital to remember that traffic in the USVI flows from the left side of the road. St. Croix is 28 miles in length and 7 miles at the widest point with two major towns—Christiansted at the center on the north shore and Frederiksted at the west end. The Caribbean Sea which surrounds the island is always there to guide you along the roads that wind around the coast. Car rental agencies have a variety of vehicles available from sporty jeeps to roomy air-conditioned sedans, vans, and SUVs. The average price usually includes unlimited mileage but you fill the tank upon return! Both US and other driver’s licenses are recognized. The driver and front seat passenger are required by law to use seat belts and cell phone talking or texting is not allowed. Parking in Christiansted is limited and 2-hour parking on parts of Company and Queen Cross Streets is enforced. Look for the signs. There is daytime parking in the National Park Service lot near Ft. Christiansvaern, until 4:30 pm, and a public lot with fees on Strand and King Cross Street. Major roads are asphalt and usually well maintained. The Melvin H. Evans Highway is the only 4-lane, divided highway running from mid-island west to within 1 mile of Frederiksted. The speed limit is 55. In other areas, the 35 mph limit applies; in town, 20 mph unless otherwise posted. Let our Attractions & Tours pages (7-9) and our St. Croix Road Map (54 & 55) and town maps (56-58) help you plan your island tour! w w w.stcroix thisweek.com

Island Worship The history of our island is mirrored in its old church structures, many of which have recently been restored. The Moravian brethren, arriving here in the 1730s from Saxony in today’s Germany, founded their mission to bring Christianity to the enslaved part of the population. The historic Anglican (Episcopalian) churches built in Gothic style include St. John’s in Christiansted and, in Frederiksted, the beautifully restored St. Paul’s church. The large number of Irish settlers, along with Englishmen and Hispanics, have contributed to the presence of the Catholic church; Holy Cross in Christiansted is the oldest in the Virgin Islands. The Danish rule of the island from 1733 to 1917 brought the Lutheran church, which still plays a large role here. Lord God of Sabaoth in Christiansted occupies the former Dutch Reformed Church; Holy Trinity in Frederiksted was built shortly after the town was founded. The Dutch Reformed church (Presbyterian) now has a new mid-island home. These are just a few of the many (over 150) churches on St. Croix, from SeventhDay Adventist to Methodist, Baptist, Church of God, and many more. Church attendance and activities are important to a large part of our population; visitors are always welcome at services, often a high point in their island experience. Many other faiths offer places of worship—a Jewish synagogue, a Hindu temple, and a Moslem mosque, to name a few. An easy-to-follow guide is actually the yellow pages of our local phone book beginning on Page 54. w w w.stcroix thisweek.com
Befolkningen. Virgin Islands befolkning er venlig men tilbageholdende. Man hilser gerne med “Good morning”, “Good Afternoon” og “Good Night.” Tider. Her som alle vegne, vær forsigtig.

Telefon. Se by- og økortene for at finde postkontorerne. Helligdage. Her fejrer man amerikanske helligdage foruden en hel del lokale. THIS NATIONAL PARK COMMEMORATES OUR DANISH HERITAGE (1733-1917).
CHRISTIANSTED WALKING TOUR Let’s start a leisurely walking tour of CHRISTIANSTED at the site of the Old Scale House 1 on the harborfront, known as the Wharf. One section of the 1856 structure displays the scale used in former days to weigh barrels of rum and sugar. The other section holds a bookstore and gift shop as well as an information center about all things St. Croix. This is one of a complex of five buildings comprising the Christiansted National Historic Site, established in 1952, administered by the National Park Service.

Originally, Government House 6 on King Street, was built as a home for a Danish merchant. That section dates from 1749; another section, the previous town house of a wealthy Danish plantation owner, was joined to it in 1826, together becoming the seat of the Danish West Indies government. The grand staircase and portico were added in 1830, as was the impressive ballroom/reception hall on the second floor by Governor General Peter von Scholten, who had his office and official residence here. The former are open to the public (entrance at mid-building on King Street). The Lutheran Church 7 across Queen Cross Street on King Street, was originally the Dutch Reformed Church, built in the 1740’s and transferred to the Lutherans in 1831, who brought the furnishings here from the Steeple Building. Later, the steeple was added. Walking up Queen Cross Street to Company Street takes you to Apothecary Hall 8 on the left corner, which holds both the tiny Apothecary Museum on Queen Cross Street, open anytime, and in the courtyard the Archaeological Museum, open only Saturdays 10 am-2 pm. Nearby on Company Street is the Old Market 9 , laid out in the original town plan from 1735, and still being used. The well dates from 1863. On this square you will also find the downtown Post Office.
Christiansted National Historic Site Established in 1952, Christiansted National Historic Site was the first unit of the National Park Saystem in the US Virgin Islands. The park’s historic buidings and grounds commemorate the Danish heritage (1733-1917) of the town of Christiansted, St. Croix, which was named in honor of the reigning King of Denmark and Norway, Christian VI. In the 1700s, Christiansted was part of a mercantile system that linked Europe,West Africa, and the Caribbean in the infamous “Triangular Trade.” Christiansted was the first town in the Lesser Antilles to be built on the grid system and to have a building code. Its distinctive colonial architecture reflects the town’s status as capital of the Danish West Indies (1755-1871); the great wealth generated by the export of cane sugar, molasses, and rum; and the influence of government building inspectors. Governor General Peter von Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the enslaved population in the Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848, from adjacent Buddhoe Park 2. The park contains a bronze bust of the renowned slave rebellion leader. The Oscar E. Henry Customs House 3 was built in the 1800s. The Freedom Fountain 4, facing the pier, was installed for the Emancipation 150th Anniversary Celebration. After severe damage during a labor insurrection in 1878, the town was rebuilt in63 Victorian style. Victoria House 5, on Strand Street, and Apothecary Hall 6, on King Cross Street between King and Queen Streets, preserve the Frederksted architecture of that time. Both received storm damage in September. The Visitor’s Bureau 7, is located upstairs on Strand Street above the Frederiksted Mall and next door to the historic light blue building housing the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts 8. Frederiksted is home to a number of historic churches, including St. Paul’s Episcopal Church 9, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church 10, Friedensberg Moravian Church 11, and St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church 12. The newly restored Old Danish School 13, on Hospital Street and Market Street, is a handsome building. At Strand and Queen Cross Streets is the Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library 14, built in 1803. The Market Place 15, is still in use today, as it was in 1751 at the founding of Frederiksted.

Meet Photographer TACKLE THE BEAST • SWIM WITH Stephanie Schoyer THE DOLPHINS • HONOR A HERO! & Artist Dad, Toby Schoyer DEC. 2 continued from page 36 When I capture a moment between two people saying their wedding vows to each other or a new mother holding her baby and I know I’ve caught something that no one else saw I feel that same excited shift I felt all those years ago. I know I got “it,” what some photographers like to call the “money shot” - it’s pure joy. What are your favorite subjects? I love kids because they are unpredictable and real. I first shot entertainment photography at a 3-day Phish concert in Maine and was hooked. I also was a photographer at Jazz Fest in New Orleans a couple of times and being so close to those amazing performers, Stevie Wonder, Robert Plant, Billy Joel, Jack White, Sheryl Crow, Alison Krauss, Steel Pulse, Michael Franti... what a dream job that is!!! I would do that again in a heartbeat. I’ve done a lot of weddings over the years and had some real fun capturing some memorable moments. My favorite kind of photography is when I’ve come up with a concept, sketched it out, gathered up props, costumes and friends to act as my models and then when it all comes together and my vision comes to life I’m in my happy place. Do you photograph for fun or profit? At this stage in my life I make photos for fun and someone comes along and wants to buy it yay! I will be exhibiting some new work at Cafe Christine Jan/Feb 2019 and am super excited for everyone to see what I am working on! I’m also taking photos for Caribbean Community Theater, cast photos and during their dress rehearsals - I love those theater people! For my upcoming show, I will be working with some great people at the Boys and Girls Club, talking to the kids about photography, my creative process, and having them help me make some great images! Where can people see your work? i have images on www.schoyer.com, www. schoyer.smugmug.com and www.society6. com. Locally, I have work for sale at Undercover Books in Gallows Bay. Is there a place to see Toby’s work? Undercover books in Gallows Bay has prints and postcards of some of Toby’s watercolors. At some point in the future my family plans on having a Toby Show on St. Croix where we will be offering some of his original paintings for sale - stay tuned! How can we contact you? My website is www.schoyer.com, my email is stephanie@schoyer.com, phone number 340-227-4481, I post on Instagram as @schoyerphoto and have a Schoyer Photography page on Facebook. w w w.stcroix thisweek.com
‘Beauty & the Beast’ Triathlon
Known globally as Beauty & the Beast, the St. Croix race course is legendary, one of the most beautiful and challenging in the world. This year’s race marks the 30th major triathlon hosted on the island. Sponsored by the USVI Department of Tourism and sanctioned by USA Triathlon, the event will be under the direction of Scott Fricks and Theresa Harper, both from St Croix. Home to previous races such as America’s Paradise Triathlon, Beauty and the Beast, and Ironman 70.3™ St. Croix, St. Croix’s Triathlon is a must-do event for triathletes worldwide. Three races will be offered this year: long-distance course, sprint and a sprint aquathlon. Relays are offered in the long-distance course and sprint
triathlon races. In addition, the long-distance course race is designated as the Caribbean Long Distance Triathlon Championship. This year’s “race to rebuild” will benefit three nonprofits—My Brother’s Table, the St. Croix Animal Welfare Center and Caribbean Centers for the Boys & Girls of the Virgin Islands, all of whom lost everything after Hurricane Maria devastated the island in September, 2017. VI TRI, along with the USVI Department of Tourism and the National Park Service, look forward to another successful triathlon in America’s Paradise! Whether you’re a racer, spectator, or volunteer, thanks for your support in helping to make this year’s race the most memorable yet!

When a mysterious Lionel Downer. stranger arrives with some surprising news, King is forced to confront his destiny and his legacy to his people. “Even before the first flash of lightning—and there will be plenty of that before evening’s end— an ominous electricity crackles through the opening moments of The Mountaintop.” —NY Times.

by Gail Bourdon, Broker-Owner Greetings from the big island of St. Croix! It’s the season to celebrate with family and friends and the best time of the year to be in the US Virgin Islands. Take time to breathe in the beauty that surrounds you. For many of us who live on the island year-round, we love this time of the year. The weather is fabulous, and we reconnect with the island’s “snow birds” and seasonal residents as they settle in for the next few months. As we look at 2018 and measure the many successes and accomplishments of St. Croix, the real estate market was no exception. Home owners and investors welcomed many rental opportunities by making their properties available for hurricane relief crews and, recently, the refinery employees. We’re excited they’re here and so grateful to them for being a part of our rebuilding for now and the future. Our low inventory of homes for sale and the scarcity of rentals are excellent opportunities for building and rehabbing existing structures. There are over 400 vacant lots listed on our Multiple Listing Service, (MSL), in every price range and lot size. The larger parcels of vacant land are ideal for sub-diving and development. Property owners, now is the time to get a Comparative Market Analysis, or CMA. This will give you an idea of what your property is valued in the current market by comparing the recently sold and presently listed properties to yours. The alterative to a CMA, would be an appraisal. Whether you intend to sell or not, knowing the current value of one of your major assets, your home, is always a good idea. We are ready for Buyers looking to explore our islands and experience our ‘Home’ through our eyes—a local RE/MAX Associate and REALTOR®. Contact one of our associates listed on Page 2. In December’s early evening sky Mars can be seen high in the southern sky in the early evening. Venus will dominate the eastern sky before dawn. The night of December 13th–14th is the maximum of the Geminid meteor shower. Perhaps the best of all meteor showers, the Geminids produce over 100 meteors per hour.
Sunrise and sunset times are based on the 15th of each month.
E
very year at this time people ask astronomers if they know what was the star of stars, the star which lead the Wise Men to Bethlehem at the time of the birth of Jesus? Long ago people thought of everything that they saw in the night sky as a “star”. Thus, the planets, the “fixed” stars, meteors, comets, etc. all were “stars”. So what might have been “The Star”? Meteors or shooting stars happen so quickly that if you see one, by the time you tell your friends to look, the flash will be gone. Certainly a meteor did not send the Wise Men to Bethlehem. Comets were well known, but were considered omens of bad tidings and thus a comet would not send the Wise Men in search of a great king. The fixed stars do not change from year to year, so they would not account for the search. For time to time a star may “explode” as a nova or supernova, and for a short time may even become visible in the daytime. But, our records show no “guest star” at the time of Christ’s birth. The Wise Men followed the motions of the planets as these “wandering stars” moved against the background of fixed stars, for they believed that the motions of these wandering stars could foretell the future. With their knowledge of the motions of the heavens they could calculate that Jupiter and Saturn would pass each other three times and then be joined by Mars. But, what of Herod Page 64 • December 2018 / Januar y 2019
SOUTH
CONSTELLATIONS: UPPER CASE • Stars: Lower Case
and his advisors, why did they not see this “star”? Most of the event would not be visible because it would happen during the day. But, the Wise Men knew that it was happening. They knew that this event would take place in Pisces, the Fish, a star group which for them was symbolic of the Hebrews. Thus some great event would take place in the land of the Hebrews and the Wise Men were off on their search. Was this meeting of the planets really “The Star”? Astronomers do not know; the final decision is yours. In January, Mars continues to dominate the western sky after sunset. In the early morning sky, Venus is still visible but now southeast of Venus you can find the largest of all the planets – Jupiter. The early hours of January 3rd-4th is the time to look for the Quadrantid meteor shower. This meteor shower produces up to 40 meteors per hour. Since the Earth’s orbit around the Sun is not a circle, but an ellipse, the distance from the Earth to the Sun changes. Perihelion, when the Earth is closest to the Sun is on January 2nd. The Sun will be “only” 91,403,557 miles away! On the night of January 20th-21st there will be a total eclipse of the Moon. Unlike eclipses of the Sun, eclipses of the Moon are rather slow events. The Moon will be completely in the Earth’s shadow, totality, at 12:40 a.m., the middle of the eclipse is
at 1:12 a.m., and totality ends at 1:43 a.m. High in the eastern sky are seven bright stars that form one of the best known constellations or star groups; Orion the Hunter. Two bright stars mark his shoulders, Betelgeuse and Bellatrix; two more bright stars his knees, Saiph and Rigel; and three mark his belt, Alnitak, Anilam and Mintala. To the south of Orion you will again come to the bright star Sirius, in Canis Major, the Great Hunting Dog. Canis Major is one of Orion’s two hunting dogs. North of Sirius and east of Orion is a bright star, of course fainter than Sirius, this is Procyon, marking Canis Minor, the Lesser Hunting Dog. To the north of Procyon are two bright stars of about the same brightness, Castor and Pollux. These stars mark the heads of twin brothers, the Gemini Twins. If it is clear and dark, look between the stars of Gemini and the stars of Orion and you will see a hazy band of whitish light arcing across the sky. This is the Milky Way our city of stars in the universe. The hazy band is caused by the combined light of millions of stars so far away that you cannot see them as individual points of light, but rather their light combines into this hazy band. West of the Gemini Twins and north of Orion is a bright red star, Aldebaran, the red right eye of Taurus, the Bull. w w w.stcroix thisweek.com
