On behalf of the people and Government of the United States Virgin Islands, I applaud St. Croix This Week magazine for highlighting the best in entertainment, siteseeing, dining, shopping, and a myriad of recreational activities available on St. Croix. Both residents and visitors will find on page after page of this helpful resource guide eyecatching attractions, on-island features, and other points of interest. Whether with family, friends, or on your own, this magazine has the inside track and advance view of all the upcoming events and activities on the “Big Island.” St. Croix’s relaxing beaches and rolling hillsides are the perfect complement for a weekend get-away, and the downtown shopping and restaurants in Christiansted and Frederiksted offer a variety of choices. There are hiking tours, snorkeling and scuba excursions, rainforest sights, and an abundance of other natural and cultural attractions throughout the island. The options for fun and entertainment are truly limitless, and St. Croix This Week provides immediate access to all of St. Croix’s major attractions, while highlighting those that are off-the-beaten path. As the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Croix has a natural beauty that is both charming and awe-inspiring. Its wondrous landscapes, hillside views, oceanfronts, and downtown areas tell the story of an island rich in culture and history. The influence from Denmark is readily visible in our architecture and windmills, offering a pleasant introduction to the experience of our people of strong Caribbean traditions. With a long history of providing the inside scoop on the latest and best in family fun and island excursion entertainment, St. Croix This Week truly captures the beat and pulse of our people. It is my pleasure to extend best wishes to all readers of St. Croix This Week for a safe and enjoyable experience in paradise. We hope you will enjoy our home as much as we enjoy hosting you.

When Shopping on St. Croix, US citizens can enjoy a Duty-Free Allowance of $1600.00 per person, including children, every 30 days whether buying to pack or mail. A small percentage is added on for purchases over that amount. When returning to the US you will be required to fill out a separate customs form for these items. This Duty-Free Allowance is double the $800.00 limit from other islands, so make your important purchases on St. Croix. You may also take 5 cartons of cigarettes and 6 bottles of liquor back as long as one of the bottles is a product made in the Virgin Islands such as our rum. Outside this allowance you can mail gifts to friends and relatives (not including tobacco and alcohol)—one package a day to the same address up to $100.00 in value with no declaration. Shop Christiansted and Gallows Bay Marketplace plus Frederiksted and Mid-island for all that we have to offer! Check out the Easy Shopping Guide on page 10 to find what you’re looking for.

GALLOWS BAY

ISLAND WORSHIP

Rare Finds – 340-713-9254

The history of our island is mirrored in its old church structures, many of which have recently been restored. The Moravian brethren, arriving here in the 1730s from Saxony in today’s Germany, founded their mission to bring Christianity to the enslaved part of the population. Their handsome yellow buildings at the entrance to Christiansted and red-roofed white wooden church mid-island, along with a contemporary church in Frederiksted, attest to their continued importance.

This fascinating shop is found at the gateway to Gallows Bay — turn left after Tutto Bene on East End Road. Here you’ll discover an assortment of different, fun gifts and collectibles. Open Wednesday thru Saturday, they offer something old, something new, something for every taste and budget. Browse here for a memento of St. Croix. 713-9254.

Undercover Books – 340-719-1567

Rare Finds Antiques & Collectibles.

Susan Wall

If you are looking for an independent bookstore in St. Croix, Undercover Books & Gifts in Gallows Bay is it. The Bistro is located right next door, so you can enjoy a cup of coffee after browsing the shelves. Undercover has everything you need in a bookstore. You will find the latest in fiction, and non-fiction as well as a fantastic children’s section. Don’t be surprised if you run into one or two local writers while you’re there; they have a great local interest selection and provide a comprehensive representation of the local talent.

The historic Anglican (Episcopalian) churches built in Gothic style include St. John’s in Christiansted, and in Frederiksted the beautifully restored St. Paul’s church, which had been damaged by a fire in 1996. These and other Anglican churches bear witmess to the large English population which settled here (and also brought us our custom of left lane driving. The large number of Irish settlers, along with Englishmen and Hispanics, have contributed to the presece of the Catholic church; Holy Cross in Christiansted is the oldest in the Virgin Islands; also significant and historic are St. Ann’s (with an interesting shrine) mid-island, and St. Patrick’s in Frederiksted.

Antiques, Unique Gifts and Collectibles

The Danish rule of the island from 1733 to 1917 brought the Lutheran church, which still plays a large role here. Lord God of Sabaoth in Christiansted occupies the former Dutch Reformed Church; Holy Trinity in Frederiksted was built shortly after the town was founded.

340-713-9254

The Dutch Reformed church (Presbyterian) now has an new mid-island home. But these are just a few of the many (at last count over 150) churches on St. Croix, from Seventh-Day Adventist to Methodist, Baptist, Church of God, any many more. You will find that church attendance and activities are important to a large part of our population, and visitors are always welcome at services, often a high point in their experience of our island.

WINE: BEST PICK! Jean-Luc Colombo Cape Bleue Rosé

Good Spirits—“Great Food Is At the Heart of What We Do!”

by Anne Salafia

On warm Caribbean days, nothing hits the mark like a glass of crisp, chilled French rosé. A delightful summertime wine anywhere, rosé suits our tropical climate year around. Bertrand Overbeek, Director of Wine at Bellows International, favors the Jean-Luc Colombo Cape Bleue Rosé. “It’s a fun warm weather wine, a great porch-drinking wine,” he says. The vineyard sits high up on the hilly terrain and rocky limestone soils that overlook the Mediterranean Sea near Marseille. Here in Provence, Jean-Luc Colombo produces a delicate, expressive rosé. Made of 67% Syrah and 33% Mourvédre grapes, his wine is salmon pink and offers aromas of peach and rose petal, perhaps pepper. Colombo derives his color from the skins of red grapes. Employing the saignée method (French for “bleeding”), he crushes and soaks the grapes until he achieves his desired color. He then ferments the juice in stainless steel, stabilizes and clarifies it. “Wine writer Robert Parker considers Columbo to be a revolutionary enologist,” says Overbeek. “Enologist being a fancy title for winemaker.” “Rosés never bog you down; this one has only 12% alcohol. You can have it with lunch!” says Overbeek. Pair this round, full rosé with fish, poultry, or vegetarian dishes. Sip it on the veranda with brunch and note raspberry, cherry, and black olive flavors. Fine restaurants such as Salud , eat @ cane bay and those at the Buccaneer Hotel and Carambola Beach Resort offer Jean-Luc Colombo Cape Bleue Rosé. www.stcroix thisweek .com

Good Spirits, on the East End, is owned by Jason Bronis and his fiancé Bennett Ritvo. Jason and Bennett relocated to St Croix in 2011 from Atlanta. He’s originally from Miami, she from Denver. Jason was a journalist for 15 years, most recently with the Associated Press. Bennett has worked in finance, political and non-profit fundraising and the hospitality industry. Good Spirits has been located at The Reef Golf Course since 2009. Jason and Bennett realized their dream of owing a restaurant in the Caribbean when they took over ownership in 2011. “We’re known for great food with great friends at great prices,” says Jason. “All of our food is made to order with the freshest ingredients. Our brisket, ribs, turkey and pulled pork are all slow smoked, tender and juicy. Our burgers are hand crafted from fresh beef. Our fresh salads feature local produce whenever possible. We have great nightly specials in season including our very popular Pasta night and Turkey dinners, Happy Hour daily and the best live music on the East End! We rock the lot with the best local acts. Call for our latest schedule. Look for game night coming soon! We take pride in making sure every dish is made to order. Friendly service and great prices keep our regulars coming back. We have a full bar with a great selection of frosty cold domestic and imported beer. We also have a small market on site with snacks, cold drinks,

ice cream and more! This season, we are unveiling our redesigned market with an emphasis on local products and souvenirs! Whether dinner for two or a party for 20, we do takeout right! Dine in or takeout, we make sure your food is fresh and hot when you’re ready. We do recommend that customers call ahead for take out and ask for 48 hours notice for large events or special requests. We offer special holiday meals and sell our pork, turkey and brisket by the pound when available. We are also proud to offer villa and yacht provisioning, a very popular service on the East End. Vacation rental owners trust us to insure their clients have everything they need to enjoy the comfort of their accommodations as soon as they arrive on island! We offer one menu for lunch and dinner. We do have a breakfast menu on the weekends in season available until 2pm. When not working, we enjoy all the wonderful activities the island has to offer. Bennett took up golf this year and loves playing at The Reef Golf Course several times a week. I keep busy taking photographs around the island for editorial and commercial clients. We also love relaxing at home with our rescue dog Haley!” Good Spirits 340-692-4663 Facebook.com/goodspiritsvi Oc tober / November 2013 • Page 31

every-day subjects an abstract feeling. In Paintograpy, I delete everything in the photograph except for the outline of the subject and add my own interpretive colors, shading, and effects.

When I came to St Croix in 1969, St Croix was truly a paradise island. Puerto Rico had then a very large artist community and the arts had always been big there. St. Croix had no galleries—only Many Hands in Pan Am Pavilion showing local art work. We used the Old Library by the Christiansted Fort as a gallery for shows in those days. St. Croix had a wonderful quality of life and the Crucian people have become very special to me. I began painting from young but didn’t take it seriously until I was in my first year of high school. The late Roberto “El Boquio” Alberty was my greatest influence when it comes to painting. He won a Guggenheim Scholarship and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York bought pieces from him. I learned color theory and the importance of good composition plus he introduced me to the ‘big gun’ artists like the late Rafael Tufino, Carlos Raquel Rivera, and Domingo Garcia.

When I’m not painting or taking pictures, I go around the island looking with my heart not my eyes for both color and light. The important thing is to find the picture within the picture. I also like to study the Bible and, if I wasn’t an artist, I probably would be a preacher. I find a lot of knowledge, wisdom and joy in the word of God and it gives sense and meaning to my life.

architect, about the book and he said the author lived here so I looked him up in the phone book and called him.

Thanks to Alberty I was accepted as a student at “Galleria Campeche” in Old San Juan. Many of today’s best Puerto Rican artists studied there under Domingo Garcia. We had many shows both at the Campeche Gallery and at the Institute of Culture. After I graduated from high school, I went to the University of Puerto Rico, where my father was a professor, to study art and humanities. His hobby was to work with wood. As a true craftsman, he made every piece of furniture in our house all out of mahogany trees people gave him. When I came to St Croix in 1969, it was difficult to find all the supplies I needed to paint. There were only two small suppliers and when they had one thing did not have the other. One day I walked into Many Hands in Christiansted and saw a black and white photo book by the late Fritz Henle and it blew my mind how this man was able to create the illusion of color in duo tones. I told my friend Bill Taylor, the

I participated in many collective art shows in my native Puerto Rico, St. Croix, New York and Vermont. I always have work available in my studio at home, the Caribbean Museum Center in Frederiksted, and I participate in the annual Good Hope School Fine Art Show. This year I decided to celebrate my fifty years in the art world by making a book, “Diego Conde, SANTA CRUZ.” Friends Roy Lawaetz and Richard Schrader wrote the introduction and biography. I dedicated the book to my son, my pride and joy, for his 18th birthday. When my friends Freddy and Manuela Morales saw it, they called the Caribbean Museum Center and the result of that call is an upcoming art show, book signing, and a lecture!” Show opens October 11 from 6 – 8 pm. Books can be reserved in advance by calling 340-772-2622.

Christiansted Fort.

We met that night at Tivoli Gardens, above Pan Am Pavilion, and the rest is history. Fritz became my mentor and my best friend giving me a Rollei camera for my birthday. This left me speechless and filled my heart with overflowing joy. He was very special; I will miss him forever. After that, I was a black and white photographer for many years always approaching my subject from an abstract perspective—abstractions being my first love. It was also the catalyst that brought me to Paintography allowing me to give

For as long as I’ve been photographing weddings one would think I would be the most knowledgeable person on the subject of all things traditional. However, as I have learned over the years, wedding traditions vary from state to state, city to city, and even family to family. The beauty of being a Destination Wedding Photographer on St. Croix is that I have had the opportunity to receive a diverse education in a wide array of traditions. One modern tradition I have come to enjoy is the “First Look.” This is where the Bride and Groom meet privately prior to the ceremony to spend a few precious moments together. Having done a first look at my own wedding I can say it does alleviate some of the jitters. Plus it’s exciting to be the first to see each other all “dolled up” before anyone else does. My husband and I took the opportunity to complete our Bride and Groom photos during our First Look. For the more traditional we-can’t-see-eachother-before-the-wedding bride, there is a First Look trend that is becoming more and more popular. Instead of actually seeing each other before the ceremony, the bride and groom get as close as they can to speak to one another, share a few moments, and maybe even hold hands before they walk down the isle. In this instance, the couple is usually separated by a door, a partition, or even just around the corner from each other. The point is to be able to be close—as close as you can—while maintaining some of the mystery. However you decide to do a “First Look,” this is a very fun and exciting modern trend that not only allows you to connect with your partner and calm the nerves, but also make a great photo opportunity as well.

Explore Buck Island with Caribbean Sea Adventures! “My family moved from New York in the late 60s and we started Caribbean Sea Adventures in 1984, says owner Miles Sperber. “Located on the Christiansted boardwalk, we are a family oriented water sports company with the largest variety of vessels available for charter—from private charters for 2 people to groups of over 100! With over 30 years of experience, safety is always our first concern. We understand that people have a choice so we work hard to make you feel like part of our family. Once you experience Buck Island Reef National Monument, you will understand why it is St Croix’s number one attraction! The most satisfying part of my job is teaching snorkeling to beginners—it really opens up a whole new world for them. With the expansion of the

monument, we are experiencing a huge growth in our fish and turtle populations and a tremendous re-growth of fragile corals which gives hope for all the reefs around the world.

I have greatly enjoyed growing up here but my greatest joy is watching my kids making their childhood memories here as well. St Croix is a great place to live so of course it makes for a great place to visit! When we are not out on the water we have a unique restaurant in Christiansted, The Court Yard on Company Street, where we serve lunch and dinner 5 days a week with a fresh local menu and amazing deserts and smoothies both made by my beautiful wife Emily. I enjoy creating new and exciting dishes and, just like the water sports, we keep our restaurant very family oriented. We look forward to the future and hope to share it with you.” Caribbean Sea Adventures 340-773-2628 www.caribbeanseaadventures.com

St. Croix Yacht Club International Regatta November 15 – 17

Rob Jones

by Jens Hookanson, SCYC Manager This year’s Regatta, founded by Nick Castruccio, promises to be even better than last year! The 21st Annual Schedule of Races has changed, so read the NOR on our website www.stcroixyc.com. The regatta committee had tons of feedback from last year’s event in regards to how many days to race. We had sailors who could only commit to 2 days of racing and those who wanted all 3 days of racing. We have changed our format to accommodate all! There will be 3 days of Racing. Friday November 15th will be a One Day Event – lots of racing and great awards. Saturday and Sunday, November 16th and 17th, will be our 2nd Regatta – also with great racing and prizes. Any Class with 7 or more boats racing Saturday and Sunday will compete for the ultimate prize of the winning Skipper’s weight in rum! All awards will be given out on Sunday afternoon. If you plan on watching the races, get a front row seat and head to Buck Island for the day. For those watching on land, the beach at the end of Miss Bea Road, Cotton Valley shores, or lunch at Duggan’s Reef or Blue Water Terrace all provide good views of the regatta. On shore, there will be live bands, good food and drink and, of course, Crucian Hospitality. Cheap accommodations are available if you register early. Registration is only $150.

Residents collect rainwater from rooftops into household cisterns. Saltwater distillation plants help the supply. With water scarce, it is used sparingly. TIME. We are on Atlantic Standard in the winter, one hour ahead of Eastern Standard. During the summer, we are the same time as Eastern Daylight Savings. WHAT TO WEAR. Island dress is casual but bathing suits and men without shirts in town or grocery stores is frowned upon. Men don’t need ties or jackets; hats are great sun protectors for everyone. No adaptors needed for personal plug-ins. WE ARE HERE TO HELP YOU. The Christiansted Visitors Bureau is located in Government House on Queen Cross Street; open weekdays. The Frederiksted Visitor’s Bureau

is located in a Strand Street courtyard near the Pier; open weekdays & cruise-ship days. A Christiansted National Historic Site Visitor’s Orientation Center is located at Scale House on King Street at the Wharf. The seasoned traveler doesn’t take chances. Lock your car, don’t wear valuable jewelry wandering in town, keep to the main areas. CURRENCY & BANKING. We use the US dollar and credit cards are accepted everywhere. First Bank (all branches), M – Th, 8:30 am – 4 pm, F, 8:30 am – 5 pm, Sat, 9 am – 1 pm (SI and Fsted); Banco Popular Sunny Isle, M – F, 8:30 am – 4 pm, Sat, 9 am – 1 pm, Banco Popular Orange Grove, M – F, 8 am – 4 pm; Scotia Bank Sunny Isle, M – W, 8:30 – 3:30, Th – F, 8:30 am – 5:30 pm. See maps for bank and ATM locations.

TAXES. No sales tax but a 10% government tax is applied to hotel rooms. COMMUNICATIONS. St. Croix has several radio stations and three television stations; Cable TV carries the national news stations. Two newspapers are published daily; also an online daily. New York and Miami papers arrive each morning. TELEPHONE SERVICE. The local area code is 340 but you need not dial it for local numbers. Phone cards are sold at many shops throughout the island. We have local Sprint and ATT stores plus Radio Shack for any forgotten cell phone accessories. POSTAL RATES. As part of the US postal system, 1st class mail is .46 cents for the first ounce, postcards are .33 cents, international rates are $1.10 for cards and letters. See maps for post office locations. MARINE LIFE. All native plants, animals, fish (unless harvested for food), coral and shells are protected under the Indigenous Species Act. You will not be permitted to leave the territory with any plants or marine life in your possession. HOLIDAYS. We celebrate US Federal holidays and local ones as well. Klima. Tider. Her som alle vegne, vær forsigtig.

Telefon. Se by- og økortene for at finde postkontorerne. Helligdage. Her fejrer man amerikanske helligdage foruden en hel del lokale. Christiansted National Historic Site Established in 1952, Christiansted National Historic Site was the first unit of the National Park Saystem in the US Virgin Islands. The park’s historic buidings and grounds commemorate the Danish heritage (1733-1917) of the town of Christiansted,

St. Croix, which was named in honor of the reigning King of Denmark and Norway, Christian VI. In the 1700s, Christiansted was part of a mercantile system that linked Europe,West Africa, and the Caribbean in the infamous “Triangular Trade.” Christiansted was the first town in the Lesser Antilles to be built on the grid system and to have a building code. Its distinctive colonial architecture reflects the town’s status as capital of the Danish West Indies (1755-1871); the great wealth generated by the export of cane sugar, molasses, and rum; and the influence of government building inspectors. Take two tours—“Free Gut” is the freed black neighborhood of Christiansted established by the Danish in 1748 and “Gallows Bay” is the fishing community that sustained Christiansted’s fish market for more than two centuries. Free Gut, $35., Gallows Bay, $15. Make Reservations with Eastern National Bookstore at the Scale House. 340-719-4091

Let’s start a leisurely walking tour of CHRISTIANSTED at the site of the Old Scale House 1 on the harborfront, known as the Wharf. One section of the 1856 structure displays the scale used in former days to weigh barrels of rum and sugar. The other section holds a bookstore and gift shop as well as an information center about all things St. Croix. This is one of a complex of five buildings comprising the Christiansted National Historic Site, established in 1952, administered by the National Park Service.

Fort Christiansvaern 3 was the first public building to be started by the Danes after the island was purchased from France in 1733. It is built of Danish yellow brick and was completed in 1749 and later expanded. Its present appearance reflects the 1830’s period. Furnishings from that era are on display; also an exhibit on local military history. At the entrance admission tickets to the Fort and Steeple Building are sold ($3) and brochures available.

Open Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm, weekends 9 am to 5 pm. 2 hour parking available on site. The Steeple Building 4 across Hospital Street, formerly the Lutheran Church and dates from 1753. It houses a display documenting aspects of the religious history of St. Croix. Ask for opening hours at the Fort. Across Company Street lies the onetime Danish West India & Guinea Company Warehouse 5 , built in 1749. In its courtyard, slave auctions were formerly held. Government House 6 on King Street was in part the former home of a Danish merchant. That section dates from 1749; another section, the previous town house of a wealthy Danish plantation owner, was joined to it in 1826, together becoming the seat of the Danish West Indies government. The grand staircase and portico were added in 1830, as was the impressive ballroom/reception hall on the second floor by Governor General Peter von Scholten, who had his office and official residence here. The former are open to the public (entrance at mid-building on King Street). The Virgin Islands Tourism office (open weekdays only) is downstairs fronting the Lutheran Church. The Lutheran Church 7 across Queen Cross Street on King Street, was originally the Dutch Reformed Church, built in the 1740’s and transferred to the Lutherans in 1831, who brought the furnishings here from the Steeple Building. Later, the steeple was added. Walking up Queen Cross Street to Company Street takes you to Apothecary Hall 8 on the left corner, which holds both the tiny Apothecary Museum on Queen Cross Street, open anytime, and in the courtyard the Archaeological Museum, open only Saturdays 10 am-2 pm. Nearby on Company Street is the Old Market 9 , laid out in the original town plan from 1735, and still being used. The well dates from 1863. On this square you will also find the downtown Post Office. October / November 2013 • Page 57

CATCH A FREE JAZZ CONCERT AT THE FREDERIKSTED BANDSTAND AUG 16 & SEPT 20! Getting West St. Croix’ West End offers beautiful sandy, calm beaches, great snorkeling and wreck or pier diving, spectacular sunsets, and the lush subtropical forest. You can reach Frederiksted with its quaint, historic town architecture in several ways. The four-lane Melvin Evans Highway is your speediest route, if you are coming from the east. Most drivers take Queen Mary Highway (Centerline Road), which also takes you to the St. George Village Botanical Garden, the Cruzan Rum Factory, and Whim Plantation Museum, all just off the Queen Mary Highway.

Governor General Peter von Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the enslaved population in the Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848, from adjacent Buddhoe Park. The park contains a bronze bust of the renowned slave rebellion leader. The Oscar E. Henry Customs House was built in the 1800’s. The building is undergoing renovations. The Visitors’ Bureau, normally located here, has been temporarily moved to an upstairs location in the courtyard of a nearby building on Strand Street. The Freedom Fountain facing the pier was installed for the Emancipation 150th anniversary celebration. In a historic light blue building down a block is the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts. After severe damage during a labor insurrection in 1878, the town was rebuilt in Victorian style. Victoria House on Strand Street and Apothecary Hall on King Cross Street between King and Queen Streets preserve the Frederiksted architecture of that time. Frederiksted is home to a number of historic churches, including St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Holy Trinity Lutheran Chruch, Friedensberg Moravian Church, and St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. The newly restored Old Danish School on Hospital Street and Market Street is a handsome building. At Strand and Queen Cross Streets is the Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library, built in 1803. The Market Place is still in use today, as it was in 1751 at the founding of Frederiksted. There are ATMs at the Scotiabank and First Bank locations on Strand Street. After hours, swipe your card at the door to get inside. The Frederiksted waterfront is home to Sunset Jazz concerts, held the third Friday of the month from 5:30 to 8 p.m.. Admission is free to the public. A public beach with showers and bathrooms is next to Fort Frederik.

Among area attractions are the Lawaetz Family Museum and lovely gardens at Estate Little La Grange, the impressive Estate Mt. ARTS in the U. S. Virgin Islands Part 9 in a series Excerpts from “Arts in the U. S. Virgin Islands” by Ruth S. Moore and David M. Hough of the Caribbean Research Institute of the College of the Virgin Islands, 1967, for the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts. VIRGIN ISLANDERS’ CELEBRATIONS reflect their way of life. Carnivals, masquerades, rituals, crop dances, ring dances and festivals were brought to the Islands by the various cultures. The French brought Bastille Day as a time to celebrate with festivals, boat races and games. The population of Frenchtown particularly enjoys Saint Anne’s Day when statues of the saint are carried through the streets in traditional processions. French weddings are an impor-

tant occasion when a sail is often stretched over the yard, a banquet set underneath, and friends and neighbors are invited. The festivals and carnivals of today have had a long evolution. The organized parades and processions of troupes and “floupes” have developed out of the strolling groups of earlier days. Groups of musicians still lead “tramps” through the streets, collecting hundreds of dancers behind them.

www.stcroix thisweek .com

Moco Jumbie, on stilts and colorfully dressed, perhaps with a three-cornered Napoleon hat, always impresses the children. Magnus, the greatest Moco Jumbie of them all who could dance through a whole parade, will never be forgotten.

plenty of young potential pirates, the Pirates may never be reproduced unless some leadership again takes over the chore of decking out a sloop, raising the skull and crossbones and charging the beach to act out the time honored drama.

The Wild Indians, with their own eerie music, feathered headdresses, aprons and mirror-decorated trim are always a big favorite. The Donkey, a man in half barrel with false head and tail, is traditional; so is the Wild Bull, whose costume is of dried banana leaves and horns.

THE VISUAL ARTS in earlier years were experienced by the largest number of people through their churches. It was here that they had lifelong contact with paintings and murals, with hand carved altars and pews. They could appreciate the grave stones, statues and the architecture so unique to each congregation.

EACH FESTIVAL has had its own particular tradition. Some have African roots, some Irish, Scottish, English or French. Some traditions have evolved by watching the gendarmes parade and mocking them; some are adaptations of events. An example of an imaginative evolution of events was the Pirates: It was a generation ago when Laurence Dunbar came to the Virgin Islands, found a great deal of talent, and introduced the comic opera, The Pirates of Penzance. The production was performed locally but not forgotten. Mr. Monroe Clendenen, more than six feet of powerful performer, took charge of the concept and for years it became a Virgin Islands traditional festival performance. A number of songs were retained but it often turned into The Pirates of Panama and the story depicted the invasion of the Islands by pirates in 1881 or 1889. When performed in St. Thomas, the pirates actually pointed to Bluebeard Castle as their home. The plot was somewhat as follows: The pirates attacked and claimed that two of their members had hidden booty and disappeared on the Island. They would proceed to capture the deserters, bind their hands, and with song and ritual give them their just desserts. Treasure chests were found and coins – foil covered chocolates – were distributed among the children. Costumes would take weeks to prepare and a great deal of realism was achieved. Sometimes as many as 250 pirates would participate in the performance. Mr. Clendenen led the festival parade on St. Croix in 1965. He no longer dressed as a pirate but in top hat and trails. Although there are

The estate greathouses were an architectural display, too, of elegant houses with castle-like walls built to protect the inhabitants from hurricane and rebellion. The townhouses followed North European models in neo-classical style, were practical in design and often had a first floor of shops. They still exist today minus the tiled roofs with dormered cukloft vents which long since have blown off.

CAMILLE PISSARRO (1830-1903) was born and reared on St. Thomas. The oldest of the Impressionists, he arrived in Paris in 1855. He was the theorist of the group and the only painter to exhibit in every Impressionist show. It has been said that his life and character were a catalogue of virtues. He was a painter’s painter and a great teacher: as a tribute Cezanne signed one of his paintings “Pupil of Pissarro.” Only now is his art beginning to get the recognition to which it is entitled.
